A Walk to Remember, by Nicholas Sparks

There was a time when the world was sweeter....when the women in Beaufort, North Carolina, wore dresses, and the men donned hats.... Every April, when the wind smells of both the sea and lilacs, Landon Carter remembers 1958, his last year at Beaufort High. Landon had dated a girl or two, and even once sworn that he'd been in love. Certainly the last person he thought he'd fall for was Jamie, the shy, almost ethereal daughter of the town's Baptist minister....Jamie, who was destined to show him the depths of the human heart-and the joy and pain of living. The inspiration for this novel came from Nicholas Sparks's sister: her life and her courage. From the internationally bestselling author Nicholas Sparks, comes his most moving story yet....

Amazon.com Review
In the prologue to his latest novel, Nicholas Sparks makes the rather presumptuous pledge "first you will smile, and then you will cry," but sure enough, he delivers the goods. With his calculated ability to throw your heart around like a yo-yo (try out his earlier Message in the Bottle or The Notebook if you really want to stick it to yourself), Sparks pulls us back to the perfect innocence of a first love.

In 1958 Landon Carter is a shallow but well-meaning teenager who spends most of his time hanging out with his friends and trying hard to ignore the impending responsibilities of adulthood. Then Landon gets roped into acting the lead in the Christmas play opposite the most renowned goody two-shoes in town: Jamie Sullivan. Against his best intentions and the taunts of his buddies, Landon finds himself falling for Jamie and learning some central lessons in life.

Like John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany, Sparks maintains a delicate and rarely seen balance of humor and sentiment. While the plot may not be the most original, this boy-makes-good tearjerker will certainly reel in the fans. Look for a movie starring beautiful people or, better yet, snuggle under the covers with your tissues nearby and let your inner sap run wild. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

From Publishers Weekly
Sure to wring yet more tears from willing readers' eyes, the latest novel by the bestselling Sparks is a forced coming-of-age story concerning a pair of unlikely young lovers. In a corny flashback device that mimics The Notebook, 57-year-old Landon Carter spirits himself back to his fateful senior year in high school in Beaufort, N.C., when he was an archetypal troublemaking teenager of the 1950s, changed forever by an unexpected first love. Jamie Sullivan, the Bible-toting minister's daughter, with her drab brown sweaters, spinster hairstyle and sincere, beatific advice, is the obvious target of high school ridicule. Despite conspiring in Jamie's derision, class president Landon, desperate for a date for the homecoming dance, finds himself asking Jamie. Afterwards, Jamie asks him to participate with her in the metaphor-laden school Christmas play (Jamie plays the angel). Landon endures the taunting of his friends and forms an uneasy friendship with Jamie, which is carefully supervised by her father. The teens visit needy orphans, give Oscar-worthy performances in the school play and share dreams watching the sunset. Landon realizes he's in love with Jamie, but, of course, she is hiding a devastating secret that could wring her from Landon's arms forever. Now tortured by his knowledge of what will be her terrible fate, he must make the ultimate decision that catapults him into adulthood. Readers may be frustrated with the invariable formula that Sparks seems to regurgitate with regularity. Although the narrator declares, "My story can't be summed up in two or three sentences; it can't be packaged into something neat and simple that people would immediately understand," this is the author's most simple, formulaic, and blatantly melodramatic package to date. Agent, Theresa Park, Sanford Greenburger Associates. Doubleday Book Club and Literary Guild main selections; 20-city author tour; movie rights optioned by Denise DiNovi at Warner Bros.. (Oct.)

In Sparks's latest sentimental tale, a 17-year-old boy in 1950s North Carolina finds all his expectations overthrown by the Baptist minister's daughter. Film rights were purchased by the producer of Message in a Bottle.

Beautiful, uplifting, tender and romantic
By Judith E. Pavluvcik
This is a beautiful, romantic, heartwarming story that will sure to leave you crying at the end. But as the author states in his preface - "you have been forewarned". I don't read many fiction books, yet when I do, I tend to stick to favorite authors and Nicholas Sparks is one of my favorites. I was hooked after reading Message In A Bottle - another tearjerker.
I am a hopeless romantic and I usually don't read romance books, but this book is superb for all of you other hopeless romantics. This book will tear at your heartstrings and will linger with you for days. I could not put this book down and read it in two days. I was immediately captivated and transported into Landon Carter's world in the late 1950's. Landon does an incredible amount of "growing up" during his seventeenth year of life. The minister's daughter, Jamie Sullivan, helps him to transform from a selfish, self-absorbed "kid", to a young adult on the verge of manhood. Landon conveys traits of tenderness, and compassion, and learns about love and faith and how to forgive, while his love blossoms for Jamie. Jamie is able to bring out all that is pure and good from Landon. It is this innocent love that is all consuming that helps to foster Landon's growth and wisdom.
Jamie may be portrayed in the book as a "goodie two-shoes", but her innocence, her unnerving faith and trying to live her life as God wanted us all to live, endears her to the reader.
The book may be predictable in parts, but that does not deter from the beauty of this story. In the conclusion, Landon realizes what love is and what it really means to love another by helping your love's dream become a reality. Landon's heart softens when he lets his true nature come through and shine - and shine it does. Epitome of true love - most definitely! With Landon's transformation complete, the reader is completely absorbed with these two main characters. You can't help but fall in love with them.
Nicholas Sparks - I congratulate you on another most tender and endearing story.
I absolutely love this book and recommend it heartily. This is a must read kind of book that can't help but uplift you as well. Just keep your kleenex handy!

A memorable book
By Steve Marson
Nicholas Sparks has a rare talent. His mastery of the written word is best described as artful, clever, crafty, insightful and filled with emotion. There is an uncommon vividness one reads within the pages of his novels. He is an artist who paints a picture with words. Good writers can create pictures in one's mind; thus, giving the reader a feeling of watching a film rather than reading a book. I see this quality within the pages of A WALK TO REMEMBER.
Another rare quality within the pages of A WALK TO REMEMBER is much more difficult to articulate. This novel brings forth an intense emotional reaction. As I read it, my mind returned to a time in which I felt less jaded. The feelings of "first love" experiences emerged. For a time, I felt younger and later yearned for a past where I embraced optimism in a loving relationship. "What could have been?" I privately asked in self-reflection.
As I ponder on the plot within A WALK TO REMEMBER, I am pulled back to reality. My critical analysis suggests that this novel is nothing special. There are no big surprises in the story line. However, the profound elegance of this novel is not in the plot, but the grandeur of the author's ability to write and seduce the reader to unconsciously digging deep for emotions rarely felt. There is a quiet intensity within these pages. I have read all of Sparks' novels. None of his other books possess such an emotional reaction.

Should be in everyone's collection of fiction.
By mzglorybe
I read the library's version - then went out and bought this for my own library. I even bought a copy for my grandson, a teen, for his book report this year. It is a clean book with a lot of good messages about life, love and death. Vintage Sparks. It's in a class by itself. Don't judge the book by the movie, which I felt was an injustice to the writing of the book.

The story is told by a 57 yr old man about the year he was a senior in high school in 1958, and about his little town in North Carolina where he grew up. Nicholas Sparks is hilarious in his dialogue of the kids and how they tease, sit around the cemetery and tell jokes, etc. You will laugh along with them, but it has a lot of insight as you see the main character, Landon, grow from a boy into a man as he befriends the preachers daughter, who his buddies all make fun of. He feels sorry for her at first, then comes to care for her a great deal. I can see my grandson in this role, as he has a big heart and always sees the goodness in someone, even if others don't. It is a very fast read and one to discuss with your kids when you are done with it...lessons learned about friendships and loyalties, written in an interesting and insightful Sparks way.

From Publishers Weekly
Ex-pro-football player Green, author of the nonfiction NFL expos? The Dark Side of Paradise, sets his fifth novel in the high-stakes world of NFL football. The cast of characters in this fast-paced thriller says it all: Angel Cassidy, a Hollywood playgirl out for kicks up until her grisly end; Conrad Dobbins, a shady pro sports agent; African-American Trane Jones, Dobbins's one big client, the key figure in a lucrative campaign for a new athletic shoe; Kurt Lunden, the scheming shoe manufacturer; Clark Cromwell, a born-again NFL journeyman; and a couple of stoned killers who like nothing better than racking up a large body count. When Trane is accused of Angel's murder, Madison McCallAace trial lawyer, athletics agent and familiar from her appearance in previous Green novelsAtakes on his defense, though she disapproves of his brutal treatment of women. Meanwhile, Trane is capitalizing on his notoriety in TV ads ("Zeus Shoes... they're killer") and sales go through the roof. The sudden appearance of a videotape clears Trane, and suspicion falls on his teammate, Clark Cromwell, who once had a relationship with Angel, too. Readers will probably not be surprised that good-hearted (to the point of goofiness) Clark is being framed. But NFL commentator and USA Today columnist Green knows the territory and he leads us briskly right through the bloody, satisfying climax.

From Library Journal
Football pros Clark Cromwell and Trane Jones have nothing in common. Clark's a religious goody-goody, while Trane grew up tough in the inner city and has a criminal record. But when the starlet who seduced them both turns up dead, they must join forces.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Brainy trial lawyer and sports agent Madison McCall (Marauders, 1997, etc.) returns, this time to defend a football player accused in the murder of a Hollywood beauty. Best-known for his nonfictional The Dark Side of the Game (1996), former All-American football star Green, an NPR analyst during the NFL season, has yet to gain respectable yardage as a novelist. Here, foulmouthed, sadistic running back Trane Jones has a chrome ball through his tongue, likes to share opium with prostitutes, beat them before having sex, then beat them some more afterward before another go at it. One morning he wakes up next to a stone- dead hooker, apparently an OD; his agent, Conrad Dobbins, has that whore from Chechnya or somewhere buried in cement at a new building site, along with her pimp and his bitch. Meanwhile, born-again Christian athlete Clark Cromwell gets cut from his team because of a neck injury. Madison handles him and gets a respectable reinstatement of salary. Then glamorous actress Annie Cassidy, who has bedded both Trane and Cromwell, is clubbed to death with Trane's golf club. Although Madison agrees to defend Trane, both ballplayers find themselves wrapped in a haze of guilt. Which of them did it? Or did neither? As ever, Green shines in depicting strategies of the playing field while his stereotypical characters have only enough life to generate a plot of mild entertainment value. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. Entertaining--but flawed
By A Customer
Double Reverse is better plotted than Green's last novel (Red Zone) which was totally contrived. This one develops better and more believably. However, I still think that Green has trouble inventing characters in general-and African American and female characters in particular. Most of his black characters are very violent and engage in stereotypical behavior. He dwells excessively on the details of how his characters look (as though that tells us about their personalities and motivations) especially the women. As others have said, the plot is predictable--as the title gives it away. Nevertheless, I give him credit for trying, and the insider's look at the NFL is fun.

A former lineman's novel digs into the NFL's underbelly
By A Customer
God, race & football
Tim Green is something of a renaissance man. A former Atlanta Falcon, he's now a New York lawyer, a commentator on NPR, an analyst for Fox football telecasts and the author of four novels. Such a pedigree makes us expect a lot from Green. He delivers with "Double Reverse" - if you're seeking guilty pleasures. Trane Jones is the vilest of pro athletes. He's egocentric, beating women sexually arouses him, and he has a rap sheet that rivals Mike Tyson's. He's also the best halfback in the NFL. Clark Cromwell, his fullback, is just the opposite. He's a born again Christian so straight he seems to have arrived via time warp from the 1950s. The two men share nothing in common - except the same girlfriend. Clark knows her as the beautiful young woman who's accepted Christ. Trane knows her as the temptress daughter of a Hollywood producer whose greatest pleasure in life is torturing men with her sexual appeal. When she winds up dead, the arm of the law ends up pointing at both men. Rare is the sports book - novel or nonfiction - that explores two of professional sports' dirtiest secrets: race and religion. After all, the playing field is supposed to make all men equal. "Double Reverse" tells us just the opposite - that players are prone to self-segregation, that money can't buy equality, and that the rise of fundamentalist athletes is as much a curse as it is a blessing. Green isn't the greatest of writers. His characters have a made-for-Lifetime quality. There's the master barrister who happens to be a stunning beauty. The detestable agent who kills wayward clients. The shoe magnate who exploits violence to sell sneakers. Despite these bigger-than-life characters, Green delivers an ingratiating, compelling story. "Double Reverse" may not be high literature, but it's good, guilty fun.

Really 4 1/2 stars -- Lively, Well-Written Regency Romance with an Appealing Hero and Heroine
By ellejir
"Beauty and the Spy" is Julie Anne Long's third Regency-set historical romance and I am happy to report that her writing seems to be getting more polished with each book. I was one who *liked* but did not *love* her debut effort, "The Runaway Duke", so I was expecting to be slightly underwhelmed with "Beauty and the Spy" as well. I was vastly pleased to discover that "Beauty and the Spy" lives up to all the positive buzz that it has been generating. Although there has been no shortage of Regency nobleman/spy heroes in recent historical romances, "Beauty and the Spy" has a very fresh feel to its characters and prose that transcends its well-traveled storyline.

This book is the first in a series of stories about the three young daughters of Richard Lockwood, a respected Member of Parliament (and spy!), and Anna Holt, his mistress. When Richard is murdered while trying to expose a government traitor, Anna is framed for the crime and must flee the country. She leaves her three little girls (Susannah, Sylvie and Sabrina) in the care of Richard's friend, James Makepeace. Seventeen years later, Susannah Makepeace, is a lovely, pampered young lady, having been raised by James, a wealthy importer (and spy!), as his own child. When James himself is mysteriously murdered, Susannah's well-ordered existence is shattered when it is discovered that James was deeply in debt. Penniless and jilted by her handsome, titled fiance, Susannah accepts an offer to go live in the country with James's relation, Aunt Frances.

Almost immediately upon arrival in the country, Susannah stumbles over the hero of the story, Kit Whitelaw, a viscount (and former spy!) and heir to the local earldom. Kit has been forced to rusticate by his father who has become concerned by his son's increasingly wild behavior while in London. Kit has been assigned by his father the task of creating a folio of the local flora and fauna, and as Susannah happens to be a talented artist, he engages her help for the illustrations. It soon becomes apparent that someone is trying to kill the unsuspecting Susannah, and Kit is forced to solve the mystery of her birth and expose the traitor who killed Richard Lockwood in order to protect her.

Kit and Susannah are both very engaging characters--attractive but charmingly imperfect. Susannah is unabashedly materialistic and a bit spoiled, but she has a restless, slightly reckless heart that is a perfect match for Kit's own. Kit has the requisite history of an unhappy love affair in his youth that led him to harden his heart to all women, but amazingly he never seems like a cliche. The story is very well-written and moves along well with only minimal dragging in the second half. There are still too many plot coincidences for my taste, that is only a minor quibble. The villain (and villainess!) are pleasantly nuanced for evil-doers in a historical romance.

In summary, "Beauty and the Spy" is a well-written historical romance with a very engaging hero and heroine. Julie Anne Long's prose is a pleasure to read and refreshingly free of the usual romance cliches. The next book in the series ("Ways to Be Wicked") is the story of Susannah's wilder sister, Sylvie, who has been raised by a French opera dancer. The preview at the end of BATS looked delightfully original and I look forward to that story as well.

Highly recommended.

Ok but not as heartwarming as previous
By JenKoko
I first read Long's TO LOVE A THIEF and was enchanted with her pygmalion story. But somehow Kit and Susannah just never caught my fancy as well as Gideon and Lily. Susannah is a bit too spoiled (reminding my of Jane Austen's Emma) and Kit behaves like an adolescent despite being a mature man of 37 (drinking, carousing with married ladies, and being set down by his daddy).

Their relationship does proceed at a unique and nice pace for a Regency becoming employee/employer and friends first. But I don't buy the "spy" characterizations in the story. None of the spies seem particularly clever but instead driven by their own personal cravings. There's very little honor and duty among them.

A vast improvement
By M. DETWILER
I acutally couldn't finish Long's first book, The Runaway Duke. The "hero", Connor, grated on my nerves so badly, I finally gave up. But, this book is wonderful. I absolutely loved Kit. He is all that a hero should be. Long has totally improved her writing with each book. This one had me riveted. Her dialogue was intelligent and so quirky that I was totally engrossed. Her master of the little ironic statement was priceless. I love authors who are good writers and Long is. To me, she is in a class (with this book) of Karen Marie Moning, who can positively transport me to her faery world with her words. I am anxiously awaiting the next effort by Ms. Long.

From Publishers Weekly
This sixth novel by Graham (Dog Days, Glenn Miller Nights; etc.) gets off to a slow start, but once it picks up its pace, it delivers a true, funny and wry portrait of six women friends from WWII to the 1990s, as well as of America's changing social mores and attitudes. Peggy Dewey, wife of Air Force pilot Vern, meets Audrey, Gayle, Lois, Betty and Kath, all Air Force wives, while Vern is on assignment in England during WWII. Though these women would most likely never have been friends under other circumstances, friends they become, and over the years Peggy is their linchpin, keeping in contact with everyone through good times and bad. The lives of the women take turns they never would have imagined as traditional military wives. Audrey's upwardly mobile officer husband dies; Gayle, the nervous young bride with the alcohol problem, becomes a famous faith healer; Betty, the "pie crust queen," has problems with her children; Lois bears a child outside of her marriage, passing it off as her husband's, though the girls suspect the truth; Kath, their English friend, and Peggy, start their own businesses. Through it all, they stay in touch, supporting, counseling and wisecracking all the way. By the end, readers will feel so close to the girls they'll be shedding tears of sheer recognition. Graham has truly captured women's friendships through thick and thin, and Peggy is a gem-matter-of-fact, grounded, funny and fresh. If readers can get past the stodgy beginning, this novel should sell itself by word of mouth.

From Library Journal
In 1952, five women bond when their husbands are stationed on the same U.S. Air Force base in England. Peggy Dewey, a no-nonsense Texan, narrates the saga of their friendship, which expands to include Kath Pharaoh, an Englishwoman they meet at King George's funeral procession. The six women go through 47 years of births, divorces, illnesses, deaths, and amazing career changes. The fast-forward ending, more of an epilog, is a bit of a disappointment, not because it's poorly written but because you're reluctant to say good-bye to Peg and her friends so abruptly. Fans of such novels as Rebecca Wells's Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Maeve Binchy's Circle of Friends, Terry McMillan's Waiting To Exhale, and other female friendship titles will relish the humor and pathos, as well as the well-defined characters, who maintain their connection to one another for almost half a century. Graham, the author of 15 books, both fiction (The Man for the Job) and nonfiction (The Parent's Survival Guide), has also written radio plays for the BBC. A welcome addition to most popular fiction collections.

From Booklist
Inspired by an old photograph of fresh-faced schoolgirls, the type you'd find at Future Homemakers of America meetings, Graham imagines the women they'd grow up to become in a rollicking, roller-coaster ride that follows the lives of five wives of U.S. airmen stationed in England during the cold war paranoia of the 1950s. When loudmouthed Lois, social climber Audrey, shrinking violet Gayle, domestic goddess Betty, and true-blue Peggy meet local lass Kate, the six women form the unlikeliest of friendships, ones that will travel from the U.K. to the U.S and, over the course of 40 years, endure relocations and separations, marriages and divorces, births and, ultimately, deaths. Graham has been compared to Nick Hornsby and Helen Fielding in her native England; American readers will swear she's second cousin to Fannie Flagg and Rebecca Wells, for in the Texas twang of narrator Peggy, Graham demonstrates an unerring ear for authentic slang in this fast-paced and funny, timely and tender tribute to the mysteries and magic of true friendship. Languished, then laughed and cried.
By A Customer
This book truly did have a slow start - had to force myself through the first 40-50 pages. After that, the characters began to come to life and grow. As American military wives during the early 1950's in rural England, the five women are left to fend for themselves while their macho husbands train. As a working mother in 2002, their narrow minded devotion to and acceptance of their situation within the military seemed almost overblown. They were known as "DW's", dependent wives, and they lived up to their acronym. It was fun to watch as they grew up and out of the military cradle, learned to function without the safety net and deal with the turmoil around them. The setting of current (for that time) events in the US grounds the story in a more realistic vein as the book progresses. It was also interesting to see that as flyers, friends and co-workers, the men had brought the women into the situation where they became friends, yet after they left the military, the men drifted completely apart and the women stayed in touch. As I got to know the women, I laughed at Betty, worried about Gayle, wanted to thump Lois, and figured that Audrey would get what was coming to her. This book is a great read once it gets going.

Funny, Well written, Fast read
By Lis
I really liked this book. It was a great, quick paced read.

While reading over the other's reviews of the book I noticed one or two reviews that mention "Anti-American" and stereotyping of the British. (Which the latter is funny because I think that back of the book mentions that the author IS British.) I think people too often forget that the novels are a lot of the time written in character. So if the character makes a stupid comment about the Britsh it's because that is who that character is! And let's not forget that an American character or an English character are not representative of American/English people as a whole. So if a character might be stupid and coincidentally American, it does not mean that the book is Anti-American.

I found this book funny, well written, and very likeable. You grow to love the characters. I didn't find the beginning slow. As others have mentioned it's hard in the beginning to keep track of everyone, but it's like that in a lot of books.

I too found that the back of the book mentions something that doesn't actually happen in the book. (It's such a glaring mistake I am surprised no one noticed!)

Friendships over all
By dikybabe
This is the story of five American Air force wives stationed at a US airbase in the Norfolk Fens in 1953, the year of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Their common thread is having husbands flying for the 68th bomber wing, and that they are military wives in a foreign land. Their social life brings them together, even though life will force them apart in distance and social rank as the story moves over the next 40 years.
I was confused about the Future Homemakers of America title, but by novel's end, the meaning rang true as the five women's lives tied back to Peggy and Betty's lives in Texas, near San Antonio where they grew up.
This is the second novel I have read in recent months that has revolved around the genetic horror of an inherited disease, Huntington's Chorea. And I was fascinated at Laurie Graham's plot links from unfaithful Lois's affair with odd John Pharoah, the English odd-ball brother of Kath, who becomes Peggy's dearest of friends.
The devotion of these women over the years through widowhood, remarriage, divorce, cancer, ambition and true friendship is worth the read.
I especially enjoyed the humorous episodes of Peggy's in her wedding and then party planning business. And her association with her dear business partner, a younger man, who is gay, is delightful.
Apparently incorporating a gay character is a trait of Laurie Graham's novels. And the reality of that incorporation is that many women find their best friendships to be with gay men.
There is a feel of a Maeve Binchy read in this Laurie Graham book.

In the dark, wintry highlands of Lochdubh, Scotland, where the local Calvinist element resists the secular trimmings of Christmas, the spirit of Old St. Nick is about as welcome as a flat tire on a deserted road. Now the lanky lawman must use all his Highland charm and detective skills to make things right. From Publishers Weekly
From the always sunny Beaton comes this Christmas special of a book featuring policeman Hamish Macbeth (Death of an Addict, etc.) and two minor Yuletide mysteries. In the fishing village of Lochdubh, Christmas looms, but there are no decorations or Christmas trees as the conservative Calvinist population declines to decorate. The lanky and amiable Hamish is told to cover the beat of a neighboring town, Cnothan, as well, where someone has made off with not only the village Christmas lights but also the huge tree. Back in Lochdubh, crusty loner Mrs. Gallagher reports that her beloved cat, Smoky, has been stolen. While investigating, Hamish meets the attractive new schoolteacher, Maisie Pease, who quickly decides she'd like to help Hamish forget his previous love interest, Priscilla Halburton-Smythe. As Hamish works on the two cases, he also makes the acquaintance of the Andersons, a strict and reserved couple whose daughter, Morag, longs for a traditional Christmas. In this mystery without a murder, Beaton reintroduces familiar characters like the spinster Curry sisters and local seer Angus Macdonald, while working in newcomers such as Maisie. It's light fun throughout, though all but Beaton's die-hard readers will find this Christmas carol too cozy by half. (Nov.)

From School Library Journal
YA-With Christmas fast approaching, Police Constable Hamish Macbeth finds the community of Lochdubh, Scotland, facing another holiday under the dreary influence of Calvinism. He manages to schedule a carol sing and party at the local retirement home, puts up a tree, and sets about solving a long-open case of petty thievery in the area. He also begins dating the new teacher at the local school. Along the way, Macbeth finds a missing cat for Mrs. Gallagher and convinces Mr. and Mrs. Anderson to let their young daughter find enjoyment in the holiday and friends. The constable's own Christmas centers on his new puppy. Although a tremendous amount of joy and goodness stems from the officer's actions, he never seems to realize any of the positive results. Macbeth appears to be just what this community needs: a logical voice when one is called for, help in times of need, and a balance between older ways of thinking and the changes being brought by the outside world. The story leaves a warm glow of contentment and has several humorous moments. A perfect selection for the holiday season and a solid tale for sharing year-round.

Surprisingly Enjoyable
By Laura
This wasn't a proper entry into the series, so there's no murder. In some ways I actually liked that better than a lot of Beaton's more recent books because it was just a cute story about the residents of the town. Morag's story was especially enjoyable.

A Charming Christmas Tale
By A Customer
I was enchanted by this charming Christmas tale. As always in the Hamish McBeth series, the primary focus of this novella was not the mystery, but a visit to the Scottish Highlands. After following the series since the first book, I felt that I was vising old friends-- this time at Christmas. Although the focus was not on the mystery, this aspect was still credible, with Hamish using his Highland intuition to recover a town's stolen Christmas lights. The book's short length made it a quick read for the busy holiday season. Highland Christmas had a fairy tale feeling and happy ending. Hamish plays Santa to a lonely little girl and an old folks home, foils Blair's attempt to get him in trouble, and gets a new friend. There are laugh-out-loud moments in this touching, feel-good story for the holidays.

This is another good mystery by M. C. Beaton...she (I guess she is a she) writes under several different names and must write a book a week from the volume of her work. This series is tied to a policeman in the Scottish Highlands....he just wants to live in this little town and live the good life....promotion doesn't even cross his mind. But, he seems to have a murder every week and he has to solve the case to protect the villagers. Then he is recommended to the Top Brass for a promotion and he is all upset and doesn't want to leave his dog, cat, and sheep. It settles down and he is allowed to continue as the Highland Police Force...and has a cup of coffee waiting for the next murder. You will get caught up in these series...be aware...very aware...

From Publishers Weekly
The adventure is marginally higher than the suspense in Preston and Child's sturdy new tale of scientific derring-do, concerning a search for Quivira, the legendary Anasazi Indian City of Gold. With four high-concept thrillers behind them, from 1995's Relic to last year's Riptide, the authors know what buttons to push and levers to yankAperhaps too well. The novel has a clockwork feel, from its first tickAthe spooky stalking of archeologist Nora Kelly on an isolated New Mexican ranchAto its last tock. Playing it safe, Preston and Child take no missteps as Nora finds an old letter from her long-missing father with clues to Quivira's location; leads an expedition of central-casting types (a leathery old cowboy, a beautiful female photographer, the jokey journalist who figured in Relic and Reliquary, etc.); after much difficulty, discovers Quivira, which is revealed as a repository of ancient evil; and encounters death by way of the Native American witches who threatened her at the novel's start. It's all predictable but rarely dull. The authors display deep affection for the pulp they're recycling, talent for exciting set piecesAa hazardous ascent along a ridge toward Quivira and the flash-flooding of the canyon harboring the city are showcases of action writingAand, always their ace, the ability to infuse every aspect of their story with authentic techno-scientific lore. This is a novel in which the archeological niceties of ancient black-on-yellow micaceous pottery are as important to plot as the caliber of the gun the heroine wields. Fans of the authors' similarly inspired, and similarly metronomic, scientific textbooks-cum-thrillers should find this one much to their taste. Simultaneous audio. (July)

YA-Checking on disturbing noises at her family's abandoned ranch house, Nora Kelly experiences a frightening encounter with two entities that resemble extremely large and ferocious wolves (in reality men disguised as skinwalkers), barely escaping with her life. On her frantic flight toward safety, she accidentally stumbles across the last letter her father wrote, describing the route he had taken in finding the lost legendary Anasazi city of gold, Quivivra. Nora finds a financial backer and puts together an expedition staffed with experts to help her find the site once more. The group encounters monumental natural obstacles and deep personality conflicts. And once the skinwalkers reappear, the eerie power of evil seems to take over. Members of the team begin to die mysteriously, and when a flash flood hits the canyon, the body count rises. The delicate balance of good and evil in the world serves as the major theme. The adventure occurs amid the beauty and spectacular dangers of the harsh environment, inspiring and frightening to behold. The constant challenge of staying alive keeps the excitement sharp. The strong emotion of greed and the interaction of opposing interests insures continual strife within the group. High-tech communications and the latest knowledge about diseases contrast with the ancient culture, and also provide answers to many of the mysteries associated with the Quivivra. This is a story filled with excitement, a sense of place, and personable characters, delivered in a quick-paced race against evil, humankind, and the tremendous forces of nature.

No loose ends!
By Fortunate Son
This was one of those few books that I couldn't put down. These guys have worked really hard to tie up any loose ends. With most books, I inevitably find myself saying, "couldn't happen" or "wouldn't happen". I found that the "couldn’t" was just not present in this novel. The authors made sure that they had their ducks in a row so far as the lay reader was concerned. A professional archeologist might have some misgivings. The improbable was answered sufficiently every time a question would arise in my mind. For example, when the team approaches the narrow switchback trail that threatens the safety of the expedition, my first thought was “why not turn back and return via helicopter”. The authors answer this with a reminder of how the updrafts in the canyon country prevented this. While this may or may not be true, it was a sufficient explanation for a novel of this type.

Use of the “super-geek”, came into play in the character of Holroyd. I’ve found that many authors make use of a character that, through his technical proficiency, can gather any information necessary to move the plot along when needed. This is usually quite implausible, but in the case of Holroyd, was not overdone. I expected a plot twist, as the authors seemed to indicate that one or more of the characters might be hiding sinister intentions. To my disappointment, this never materialized. But, I must admit, this would have been hard to pull off while still remaining plausible. Many authors implement a plot twist by simply lying to the reader. They will point all evidence towards a character’s innocence, offer little or no foreshadowing, and then reveal the character as the antagonist. This comes as a surprise only because the reader has been lied to about the character’s true intent. The authors avoided this mistake.

Other than that, this book was pure fun, and a real page-turner.

Fantastic
By Amazon Customer
"Thunderhead" is perhaps my favorite Preston/Child novel to date, as it is definitely head and shoulders above the competition in the "techno-thriller" genre. Where Preston and Child have separated themselves from the pack is in their writing and characterizations. Any writer can string together high tech jargon and cool gadgets and produce a story. However, it takes writers of rare talent to combine that science with tight plotting, characters with real depth and beautifully written settings.
In "Thunderhead" the reader follows an expedition in pursuit of Quivera, the lost city of gold. Of course, nothing is ever easy, and there are mysterious forces at work trying to block the expedition. While that may sound somewhat hokey, I can assure you that the authors have done their research well. They bring a tremendous amount of historical fact, as well as cutting edge speculation into their story. In fact, I was so intrigued by the history they injected into the story, I went out and bought several books on the ancient cultures of the American Southwest.
In the end, "Thunderhead" is a great read; it has enough of a foundation in reality that you don't find yourself grimacing at the clichés of a typical thriller. At the same time, the writing is superb, and the reader is inevitably sucked in as the authors ratchet up the tension to the point where one literally can't put the book down. Once again, these authors have proven that a book doesn't have to be mindless to be entertaining.
Enjoy!

Fun, but peculiarly reminiscent of previous work
By Ananda Gupta
I like Preston and Child's work so far -- their research is good (if heavy-handed) and their plots are fun. Most of their popular novels involve the same main plot device... some primitive legend that has a modern scientific explanation. This one is no different, although the suspense somehow doesn't match that of RIPTIDE or THE RELIC.

What is more disturbing about this book is that it's clear the two authors have only a few character types. There is the enthusiastic and driven hero (RIPTIDE's Hatch was an exception), doggedly pursuing a long shot theory or familial dream. There is the ethnic minority or specialist who gravely prescribes respect for the mysteries of the past (and who, of course, was right all along -- the aura of superiority ascribed to ancient ways in all of P & C's books borders on the insufferable). There is the obsessive and unstable ubermensch-type, who eventually goes nuts and threatens everyone. And then there is the smartass for comic relief.

P & C's best books (RELIC and RIPTIDE) include characters who deviate from these stereotypes, and which don't include a lot of unpunished moralizing. This one, disappointingly, has both stereotypes and moralizing, and while I was entertained, I doubt I would read it again or recommend it over their past successes.

More than just the basics
By J. Griffith
Reading the other reviews I felt it was important to offer another perspective. While I haven't given public speeches, when it comes to my own body I'm an expert. I've spent more time with it than anyone else and over the years have learned quite a few things that I'm sorry to say I don't have techical terms for. Just what I know.

This book and "The ESO Ecstasy Program" (the first book I read when it first came out), might give certain impressions to a casual reader. But the working beauty of this program is when it is put into practice.

And I don't mean towel exercises. To limit these books that way is like saying diet pills work or don't work. Only a comprehensive diet and exercise program with monitoring by a health professional (like your Doctor) can do that. This is the same thing to me. The book (a professional on paper) is nothing without practicing the art itself.

I found the book focused more on communication techniques (lacking in most relationships - talking about our inner thoughts and understanding them doesn't come naturally for everyone) than exercises but putting those into practice with communication and time produces results.

Not fanciful results either. The descriptions of what is possible in the books comes from years of practice between the two authors. While it's possible to follow the program and see outstanding results in 30 days (the new editions timeframe, the original book it was 90) as well.

I always recommend this book along with "The Lover Within" by Julie Henderson, for anyone in a long term relationship that wants everything possible from it - not just what you see and hear about on TV.

As a tool for taking that next step in intimacy I've not found a better resource. It's not for the casual reader, nor have I found much success sharing with short term partners.

Good stuff. Just because it sounds amazing doesn't mean it's not. :)

Good ideas for the family
By tpaw
Doris has taken ideas from her own household and others to fill this book with ideas of bringing the family together around the table. This is her mission and a very valid one in today's world of two income families and rush, rush, rush. Although there are some good ideas, I found it to have a little too much fluff to up the page count of this small book. But I still believe in the book's intent and will be giving copies to my brother and friend for them to get ideas for raising my nephew and godson.

A heartwarming and beautifully written celebration
By A Customer
This is a wonderful celebration of family relationships and friendships----The writer, with poignancy and humor, helped me remember the traditions and experiences that have enriched my life and my connections with loved people. And I enjoyed reading about ways in which others have creatively brought people together "around the table". I intend to incorporate some of these ideas into my own "celebrations" with family and friends.

There's something about your childhood home that never leaves you, and this book brings it all back, and helps you re-create a sense of love and generousity in your own home. I ordered this book for my sister, who just called to say she's already read it, loved it, and ordered a copy for our mom.

Brings much-needed common sense to kids & dogs subject.
By A Customer
Kilcommons does new families a great favor with this book. "Child-proofing Your Dog" is a common sense approach to introducing your new child to your dog, preventing problems, and ensuring a long, close relationship. He dispels myths and gives new parents an idea of what to expect both from their dog and from themselves. He identifies often-missed (or exused) signs of dominance in dogs, explaining the natural progression from dominance to aggression if left unchecked. In cases where there is a specific problem involving advanced aggression toward a child he advises going to a professional, as would any responsible dog trainer in print. Kilcommons and Wilson have years of experience and wisdom in dog behavior and training; they've written a trustworthy, important 'preventative manual.'

Very good book!
By Dog lover
We bought this to help us train our two newly rescued rat terriers to accept our grandchildren. They had some very good advice on introducing dogs to children, etc. that we have already used. Hopefully, by the time they visit, they will be more socialized to children.

The reason I rated it 4 instead of 5 stars is just that it's very short and concise. I still had some unanswered questions after reading it, but so far, it has the most information in one book on this issue that I've seen.
