I listened to the videos on Mr. Simen's webfilmschool site and was amazed at the volume of information, and more importantly, the level of detail he offers in his course (and that was just the online video portion).

You will not get everything you need to go out and make a film from any one book. Every situation will have unexpected twists and turns that will require you to research a little more, change something in the script (more than once) etc. Don't expect to make your first film start to finish based on one instructor's guidance. Be open to multiple books and instruction until you get your film the way you want it.

Start with a project you can handle to get used to film formatting as Mr. Simen's suggests. I have a completed script and now am going to work on just a trailer for it to see if it looks like what I am working towards.

The part about PPM is true and always has been it's just that many people don't know about it so they don't do it and it catches up with them later...Be sure to include a PPM. The SEC used to mail them out to people. These days you can probably get it off their website. It is a very common private placement investment document. If you already have your product ready to present to investors get an attorney to handle this part so you can focus on the movie (its marketability) with your investors.

Our Independent Movie "How the Game Is Played" Is a Success Thanks to From Reel to Deal

"From Reel to Deal" was recommended to us by another film maker, in our journey of creating our first Independent film. We only wish we would of had this book from the start of the project, we found out about the book by the time we were almost finished with the editing of the film! We had a Director that has been in the business for over 20 years and has won a few Crystal Reel Awards for his drug awareness movie "Trouble In Oz". We had a film but had no idea what to do with it at that point. This book helped us to enter film festivals, how to distribute and promote this film. The fact that this book gives you references to other books at the end of each chapter, was extremely helpful to learn even more about the different subjects. We were able to involve as filmmakers after reading this book. We are so happy we found "From Reel to Deal", we just received a nomination for an award at the New York International & Independent Film and Video Festival. We owe a lot of our success to Dov S-S Simens and From Reel to Deal! They will present the awards at the next festival in New York on March, 20th 2009. One, if not the most useful book I've read on filmmaking!

I will try to make this review as succinct as possible. This is to urge you to read this book and act on it.

I have read many many books on film (and the craft). I am a film producer/director who has won several festival awards and countless official selections. I was in utter awe at how much information was in this modestly sized cheap book. I base most of my book collections on Amazon reviews and peer suggestions. In that aspect alone this book refers to books on every single subject of filmmaking!

That alone makes this book solid gold. It took me about 2 years to compile my current film-oriented library. If I had this book before hand, I am undoubtedly sure it would not take me 2 years to build my collection.

So, what else will you find in this technical masterpiece? "Everything you need to create a successful Independent Film". Literally.

Every chapter flows swiftly (at the end of every chapter is a reference to what seems an endless list of contacts/books/sources). And before you know it, you're done. And boy will you want more. ;)

Simens packs so much information in a tiny amount of space, it makes other books i've read seem redundant. Read it once and you'll be a better filmmaker 10 fold. Read it twice, and you should have no reason to hold you back (aside from the lazy).

Zweig is more enthusiastic about the intricacies of his "technical" stock market approach than he can expect the average investor-reader to be. Nevertheless, he has produced here a clear and detailed analysis of market trends, interest rates, Federal Reserve policy, debt volume, market "momentum," etc., that seems to carry the technical side of stock-market theory as far as it can go. The result is a sure-fire system for beating the marketprovided you make no mistakes.

Zweig's "proven methods for market forecasting and stock selection" are presented in a simplified version of the approach he uses in his Zweig Forecast newsletter calculations. Tables show how well an investor would have done by following the buy or sell signals for his Super Model, which is constructed of various "monetary" and "momentum" indicators. He also subjects his decisions to "sentiment" and "seasonal" indicators. Scan earnings reports, he advises, be flexible, have patience and discipline, set stop orders, and "don't fight the tape." The drawback, common to all such systems, is that transaction costs and taxes are ignored. Nor does Zweig's claim that his model can be accomplished on one transaction per year square with his admonition to diversify into several stocks. Excellent book with some good methods of taking the market temperature that were totally new to me. And that's after having read at least 100 books out there on methods to succeed in trading. This one is of a different breed. Worth the read.

I am an aspiring daytrader. The book doesn't go much into daytrading, but does give excellent insight on the basic strategies that made Zweig a legend on Wall Street. Basically, he states something that I have always wanted to hear from one the the established greats; that buying and holding is not always the best answer. That the trend is your friend. He backs up his theories with a proven track record over 3 decades. One criticism is that most of his comparisons are bases on his method of buying and selling on signals compared with buying once and holding, and I had wished he had made a comparison based on dollar cost averaging also.

If you follow him, the average guy can't loose

This is by far the best investing book I have read. I just gave Jim Cramer's book, Real Money, a 3 star rating for lack of usable info on top of his 400 pages of egoistical ramble.

First of all, Dr.Zweig has the financial education and extensive research of the market since 1929 behind him. After all he has earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree in Finance. He has the track records that are particularly amazing in BAD markets. As Zweig says, "anybody can be a hero in a bull market".

The entire book is an introduction of his "Super Model", what he calls it. It is a series of monetary and momentum indicators combined into a one powerful model, which is a perfect fit for the "weekend investor".

Do not get me wrong. His extensive research model is simplified in this book to fit the "weekend investor" complexity, but it is not as simple as it may sound. If you are serious about his approach, then you will have to read his book at least 2 times to get the overall concept and then it will require to actually work out the model in current numbers on a separate Excel worksheet.

If you "get" the book, you will understand that developing the so called "Zweig Screen" is just half the battle. Stock picking is very important to Zweig, of course; however, knowing the direction of the market based on his models is the other 50%. It may just mean your being invested 100% in stocks and sleeping soundly or being invested only 25% in stocks and sleeping soundly again, knowing you are not missing anything.

To sum it up in one sentence, Zweig's approach is a combination of economics and finance. I suggest constructing his models and following the final Super Model. Then create a simulated portfolio on any financial site. Follow some Zweig Screen, for example AAII.com's, and measure the performance of your portfolio for a quarter. You will see results. Remember, there are no shortcuts in Zweig's models!

I wish there were more books from Zweig, but in all, this book is really sufficient.

After I read this book, I forgot all about how "Stella" got her groove back! Lolita Files' characters, Misty and Reesy don't "wait to exhale" but draw us into their lives - in full force, with great detail. As a young black woman, I could really identify with this book, especially the 90's dating scene. I wanted a friend from TX to read it so much that I bought if for her, including the sequel "Getting to the Good Part," which I'm reading right now. Now that I've discovered Lolita Files, I don't know who Terry M. is anymore; Lolita Files is 'da bomb !

READING SATIFACTION GUARANTEED

Scenes From A Sistah most definitely ranks up there with the greats. It is a story about a friendship that is everything a friendship should be. We all should be so lucky to find a friend that together we balance each other out. I love Misty's career mind and Reesy's ability to speak what's on her mind. They compliment each other because, one's weakness is the others strong points. This book was so good that I could not put it down. I basically finished reading it in one day. Whenever I'm in the bookstore, I make sure that I recommend it to at least one person before I leave. Even the guys will enjoy this one. So, if you don't already own a copy make sure and obtain one. I guarantee you will enjoy it.

Lolita Files is truly a very gifted writer and a very inspiring person. I've had the pleasure of being in her presence on a couple of occasions and if she's anywhere near YOU, make sure you attend and get a chance to hear her read because she brings the characters to life with her voice, expressions, and attitudes so well that if you haven't read it you will and if you have, you'll read it again. She is most definitely one to watch.

And if you read this Lolita, thanks for being yourself. You have most definitely inspired me. You are definitely a great asset to African American Readers and Inspiring Writers. I, along with many others, look forward to the next book

Finally a novel of TRUE SISTAHSHIP

"Scenes from a Sistah" is something that is known tobe fiction but in return it's nonfiction. In other words, this novelis true & demostrates everything that actually happens in a "Sistah's" life. Reesy is someone I believe we all know, if it's not ourselves. I loved her, she was full of SPUNK!! Now, Misty (career wise) is where I would love to be. But the sista was totally clueless when it came to men. She reminds me of the saying, " She got book sense, but no common sense". Now, that was MISTY!!! But over all I admired the friendship... the bonding between two sistahs!! This relationship really exist, it's true to the heart. Great Novel... a must read!!!

I found this book to be "uncommonly" good!

Continuing my love affair with the works of Margaret Maron, I returned to her Deborah Knott series and really enjoyed "Uncommon Clay", which is a quick read with an ending that surprised me.
Deb is again on the road, visiting Asheboro this time, and the reader gets the treat of learning more about NC folk crafts...(prior novels have featured furniture), this time with the work of Carolina's folk pottery industry. Some interesting and colorful new characters and friends are added to the story line. The book also continues the saga of Deb's romances, and how badly they go sometimes. In this tale, Deb has two embarrassing scrapes with the down side of relationships. Maron also takes the time to insert a small tidbit about Oscar Nauman, a character from her Sigrid Harald series, in a way that makes the reference seem real and natural.
With its interesting plots, spunky heroine, delightful descriptions of large southern families and friends, and its ability to educate the reader on the life and times of beautiful NC, the Knott series is a fast, entertaining, and well written group of books. Uncommon Clay still leaves me hungry for more!

Uncommon Clay

Uncommon Clay is not one of Margaret Maron's best Judge Deborah Knott books. That said, it is still very much worth reading. The ending was a little too easy to figure out for my tastes. However, Maron (in the Knott series) has a great ability to describe people and places so that you truly feel that not only can you imagine what it would be like - but you can feel like you are there. Uncommon Clay taught me a lot about pottery making in the area. Also, we learn more about Deborah's friendships. I was glad to see the end of her relationship; although, I do think it would be nice to see her get revenge. "Living well is the best revenge" and by the end of the book, I'm not sure I was satisfied that she was living well. I highly recommend all of the Judge Deborah Knott books.

Creepy, horrifying villain, great suspense and nice romance

4.5 Stars! Another great book in the Romantic Suspense Series. This book started off a little slow for me and I didn't really connect with the relationship between Reed and Mia although I liked both characters. The villain in this book was once again creepy and terrifying and utterly believable. Nobody writes villains better than Karen Rose. I think the suspense is stronger than the romance in this one and it isn't until more than 70% of the way through the book before Reed really "wakes up" and starts to let go of his past. Both Mia and Reed are strong, likable characters although Reed annoyed me occasionally. They both have a lot of past issues to deal with and so this romance is a very slow burn. I loved the suspense part of this book and couldn't put it down. It also packed much more of an emotional punch then I thought it would and from unusual places. The poem Reed's daughter wrote made me cry and the little boy in this story was just heartbreaking. I cried and then I laughed and I walked away feeling good and wishing it wasn't over and there isn't much more you can wish for from a book then that. I only took a 1/2 star off because it started slow for me and the romance really didn't happen until the end. This is a fabulous series and I'm looking forward to the next one!

Not my favorite author

Karen Rose has WAY TOO MANY characters in her stories. I like to keep up with each and every character (writing notes on them on paper). Many of the characters are mentioned only once and have nothing to do with the developing story and I end up with a list with many names that don't even matter. The sex part is more explicit than I care to read about, although it doesn't go on and on - but the buildup is there throughout.

Westlake, who has made his mark both with witty capers and with gritty noir thrillers, has more than a million copies of his Mysterious Press books in print, as well as more than a million copies of his many titles in print around the world. And I'd like to go on record as saying that he deserves every bit of that success. This is a case of an immensely talented author getting his due, with the vast (and, alas, sometimes taste-impaired) reading public revealing a great discernment.

Westlake has been well and truly acknowledged by his peers over the more than four decades of his career, having, among other honors, been named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America, been the recipient of the Bouchercon Lifetime Achievement Award, and been nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay of The Grifters.

His latest book, Put a Lid on It, is a far cry from his recent throat-grippers (The Hook, The Ax) and also different from his recent revivals of his earlier cold-blooded/hard-boiled Parker series (Firebreak , Flashfire) written under his Richard Stark pseudonym. It is closest in tone to his Dortmunder titles (most recently, Bad News), but it introduces a different sort of thief than the protagonist who is featured in The Hot Rock, Bank Shot, and others. Meehan, the hero of Put a Lid on It, like any other Westlake lead character, is a one-name kind of guy and is as recognizably a Westlake creation as if he were branded with a giant "W."

Smart as he is, though, Meehan wouldn't be a Westlake hero if bad luck were unknown to him. When we first encounter him, he's sitting in jail in the Manhattan Correctional Center, denied parole and stoically awaiting sentencing. Out of the blue, a chance to alter his fate presents itself when a clandestinely dispatched representative of the president's reelection campaign presents himself as Meehan's potential savior.

All Meehan has to do is come up with a workable plan to steal a hideously incriminating videotape from the upstate-New York estate of a wacko millionaire. He must find the appropriate accomplices to help him and so forth... while the clock is furiously ticking.

Fans of such sophisticated political farce as Larry Beinhart's American Hero (transferred to the screen as Wag the Dog) or Joe Klein's (a.k.a. Anonymous) Primary Colors will enjoy the twisted application of Westlake's merry cynicism to the idea of the bungled high-level cover-up. They will admire, as well, his long-perfected ability to blend incredible smartness with an ever entertaining degree of smart-aleck impudence. More Meehan, please. Every Westlake book surprises in a different way, from the hilarious Dortmunder series (Bad News, etc.) to the dark, ominous novels of suspense (The Ax, etc.), and this latest comic caper is no exception. Francis Xavier Meehan, one of Westlake's luckless crooks, is in federal prison for hijacking a mail truck he thought contained computer chips. A presidential reelection official offers him a pardon with a Watergate-type scheme: Meehan must steal a video that, if made public, may prevent the president's reelection. Meehan's court-appointed lawyer cuts the best deal she can for him, and we're off on the caper as Meehan assembles his heist crew, figures the logistics and cases the estate of the elderly, right-wing gun collector who has the video. Egyptian and Israeli spies, plus a plethora of presidential aides ("A hundred thousand big mouths," says Meehan about Washington insiders), provide intermittent interference. By the time Meehan learns the video involves national security and he's superfluous, we've also learned that he's a lot smarter and more savvy than the better-educated president's men. The novel ends with a typical Westlake twist funny and perfectly appropriate. Westlake hooks the reader from the first sentence, maintaining the suspense with unpredictable turnabouts and dead-on descriptions: a presidential aide has "a store of meaningless smiles like Halloween masks." Adult/High School-A presidential reelection committee needs to retrieve an incriminating videotape from the Other Side, and, having learned something from history, they "outsource" the job to a professional thief. Francis Xavier Meehan, a career burglar, is just hunkering down to his first federal sentence when he is offered his freedom if he will pull off the heist. Soon this political innocent who has never heard of contributors' planes or October Surprises is playing power politics with the best of them. He brings in his own lawyer to protect his interests, enlists the aid of some fellow thieves, and calmly turns every unexpected development to his own advantage. This might sound fairly predictable, but in Westlake's masterful hands every page delights readers with satirical observations, unexpected twists, and an endless supply of laugh-out-loud zingers. All of this fast-paced fun is laced with sharp observations of contemporary life; light reading just isn't crafted any better than this. Readers who enjoy humorous fiction, satire, or crime-caper stories should be delighted with this book.

Master of the Caper

Somewhere between Parker and Dortmunder is Francis Meehan, a streetwise thief facing a long term in federal prison. Not quite as violent as Parker, not quite as comic as Dortmunder, Meehan is recruited by some true low-lifes: politicians.
Having learned from the mistakes of Watergate, the President's men have hired a competent crook who they can tantalize into work with the possibility of freedom. Both sides are in over their heads: Meehan is used to a more honest breed of crook, and the politicos have little idea what the world of crime is like.
Like other Westlake caper novels, half the fun is in the preparation of the eventual crime. Most of this book deals with the preparations, with the actual crime not taking place till late in the book. Westlake is a master in this field, and he doesn't disappoint here. If the book rates four stars, it is only because, good as it is, it is not quite the level of some of his other works. Nonetheless, neither Westlake veterans nor first-time readers should be anything less than pleasantly entertained.

Wow, talk about a poorly written book, this is it.Dismal plot,sentences structure like a 10 year old,honest.I could only read 40 pages or so before quitting, and I love this genre. Sounded more like a punk little kid trying to talk tough and failing.There are lots of better mysteries out there.

Written with the typical matter-of-fact prose endemic to the genre, Westlake infuses his crime story with a wit that keeps you chuckling from beginning to end. Our hero is, of course, a thief--a criminal quite cognizant of his social shortcomings but trustworthy in his own fashion and making his way through the world as best he can.

Where Westlake absolutely excels is in his wry exposition of the absurdities with which "straight" society seems to have no problem. In this book the criminals have to teach the politicians their own business. There is a running theme in Westlake's story that has one set of characters engaged in what they rationalize as mere dirty tricks, which the criminals recognize as simple felony conduct. As the protagonist helpfully points out--housebreaking, however noble the intent, is still burglary. And therein lies the humor--the all-powerful political operatives simply fail to see that they are engaged in a criminal enterprise. It is to be regretted, I suppose, that the typical reader will have no problem believing that political operatives think this way.

The line between acceptable (or "legal") and unacceptable (or "criminal") conduct is being redrawn. Obviously, nobody should get too exercised about a good caper story--Westlake is careful to make his bad guys not too bad and his "good" guys horribly flawed. I think that Westlake's point is that our world is trading morality for legality and losing in the bargain. What is worse? A thief who honors his promises and exercises his or her own brand of income redistribution with self-restraint or a politician who, within the law, has no problem enriching themselves with the widow's mite.

But forget the philosophy--the author's gentle tweaking of values makes the book both hilarious and thought-provoking.

Sentimental and Suspenseful

With a sentimental start, Nicholas Sparks crafts a heartfelt, suspenseful story. Julie Barenson is a young widowed woman. Her beloved husband, Jim, left her a note in which he made a promise to her that he would always be watching out for her. She continued on with her life and time passed. Four years later she is still residing in the same town with Singer, her exceptional dog that Jim had bought for her before he died. Julie is now seeking a new relationship. But, as in life, love is confusing. Enter Mike Harris, a great guy who’s solid, but, also her late husband’s best friend. Then there’s Richard Franklin, a man who’s sophisticated, intelligent and wants to give her the world. She finds a connection with one of the men and not so much with the other.

As the pages turn, we find out that something may be amiss and so the suspense begins. In true Spark’s fashion, there is a twist and a mystery. Although, not my favorite from this author, he does a good job bringing this story to life.

Great Read

This book is different from other books by Nicholas Sparks that I have read in that it is more of a "thriller". The book begins with the same feel as most of Sparks' books, but by midway he has you captivated by the story line, and I couldn't put the book down. He said in this book he wanted to foremost have the love story and the thriller as the secondary part of the story. It seems it would be very hard to not make the thriller story line the main theme, but he did a beautiful job of accomplishing what he set out to do. I don't give many books a 5 star, but I though this one deserved it.

Predictable, yet a good read

Although this story definitely kept me interested and reading, if you have ever read another book by Nicholas Sparks or seen a movie adaptation of his books, you will probably see where this book is going about 1/3 of the way through. Also, the characters seemed under-developed and boring and they made impulsive decisions too often (things that would make you say "who would ever do/say/think that?"). Despite this, the story is interesting and has some surprising elements. Also, it is a quick read and definitely won't leave you dry-eyed in the end.

His search to find the missing woman-prompted by his insatiable curiosity and by memories of his tragic, long-ago hunt for his sister, also a prostitute-draws Pierce into mortal danger. It also pushes him into conflict with the law, for when the cops cotton to Lilly's disappearance, Pierce becomes the number one suspect-serious bad news for this scientist whose company is being visited by a major investor in just a few days. Connelly's plotting is shrink-wrap tight, his characters-particularly Pierce, whose impulsiveness is balanced by his measured applications of the scientific method to analyze his plight-are smartly drawn. It's the rare reader who will be able to finger the villain behind all the mayhem. While very entertaining, however-this is the perfect book for a long airplane ride-the novel lacks the moral resonance and weight of Connelly's most impressive works, such as City of Bones.

Once again, Connelly (Blood Work) keeps the reader's heart racing and the pages turning. After a messy breakup, Henry Pierce is just settling into his new apartment and new life. However, any peace he might find ends as soon as he checks his phone messages for the first time. There are several, all left for a woman named Lilly. She apparently had the number before Henry, and the messages seem to indicate that she's in some sort of trouble. Because of an incident deep in his past, Henry decides to locate Lilly and attempt to help her. Needless to say, he quickly finds himself in over his head, dealing with web pornographers, gangsters, and thugs, trusting nobody while trying to save both Lilly and himself. Connelly takes what could have been a typical suspense thriller and turns it into something exceptional through nonstop action and surprising twists. This one will move quickly off the shelves in public libraries.

I give up...

I give up...

I've made it to chapter 14 or 15 and just can't bring myself to read any more of this book. These few chapters have been a fumbling, bumbling mess of following a protagonist who is just too unbelievable to get behind.

I've read all of the Bosch novels (to date) which, although being formulaic, I found immensely enjoyable and readable.

One thing I've noticed about the Bosch series is that, from first to latest, Mr. Connelly is present in great, if not perfect, form in character development, plot structure and story telling. This book seems as if it was possibly his first manuscript which was shelved until Mr. Connelly made his name, much the same as Battlefield Earth was shelved until Travolta was enough of a market draw to support the film.

If this is your first Connelly read, please don't judge his other books by this one. He really is capable of telling a fantastic story. He simply, for whatever reason, missed the mark on this one.

I am a huge Michaei Connelly fan but somehow I missed this science fiction/fact thriller. As always the plot moves with twists and turns and the character development is above average, but the central character, a certified genius, acts like such a moron in the first 2/3 of the book that I found it hard to care about him as a person. Having an idiot for a protagonist worked well for Dostoevsky but not so well here. The best part was the 1992 state of the art science.

As always Michael manages to keep his mystery one page ahead of the reader. I truly enjoy how he can make the reader try to establish the true plot yet somehow save it until the very end.

Immediately, readers will notice the absence of modern masters like Stephen King and Peter Straub, and past masters like E.T.A. Hoffmann and Charles Beaumont. A more accurate title for this volume would be Thirteen of the Best Horror Stories Published in English Between 1843 and 1948. Its selections are sometimes uneven, but usually excellent, and are often of tremendous importance.

The anthology presents some masterpieces that have appeared in innumerable other collections: Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart," Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," W.W. Jacobs's "The Monkey's Paw," H.P. Lovecraft's "The Call of Cthulhu," and Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." However, The 13 Best Horror Stories of All Time avoids some obvious choices (instead of "Carmilla," the selection from J. Sheridan Le Fanu is "Green Tea"), and it includes a genre-stretching work (H.G. Whether these are the best baker's dozen of their kind (since none are translations--of Hoffman, Gautier, and Gogol, for starters--how could they be?) is beside the point because they are, with one exception, stories all horror connoisseurs should know. Poe's "Tell-Tale Heart," LeFanu's "Green Tea," Machen's "Great God Pan," Blackwood's "Willows," M. R. James' "Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad" are shoo-ins, as are those two eminent treatments of the three-wishes theme, Stevenson's "Bottle Imp" and Jacobs' "Monkey's Paw." No less worthy are two representations of psychological horror, Gilman's "Yellow Wallpaper" and Onions' "Beckoning Fair One" (the story of the world's worst writer's block), and two parables of social conformity, Wells' "Country of the Blind" and Jackson's "Lottery." There are more chilling Lovecraft tales than "The Call of Cthulhu," but the flagship of the Cthulhu mythos deserves its berth here. The ultimate unhinged collection, the force before which the soul of man blackens and withers

You won't find a better line-up in any other book of short tales. Here are the Masters, the true "Old Ones", who paved the horror-ridden walkways that deranged souls love to walk upon. If someone says, "I don't like horror", or rejects the newer splatter horror, this book is the perfect gift to introduce them to what horror is really about.

It's not about blood; it's about dread. That sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, that feeling that forces your from your chair at night to turn on all the houselights and peek cautiously out into the night through curtains that flutter in unseen winds. You lock the door and you lock the windows, but the feeling will not leave.

From the languid, flowing prose from 'The Willows' by Algernon Blackwood, the terror of insanity in 'The Yellow Wallpaper' by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, houses haunted by madness in 'The Beckoning Fair One' by Oliver Onions, and classic tales by Poe, Stevenson, Machen, Stoker, H.G. Wells, Lovecraft, and Jackson, this truly is the best of the best of horror. It's nice to have this classic pieces available in one book. Any horror fan of course has read and/or owns these works, but the convenience of perusing your midnight pleasures in a single collection is more than worth the price of the book. I would give it 10 stars if I could, this is a "must have" book for horror fans. Enjoy!

Highly atmospheric and creepy tales

"The 13 Best Horror Stories of All Time" compiles true classics of the horror genre, though I would have preferred a larger compendium with more works. The tales included here are atmospheric, dark, and macabre. It makes a great introduction to the classic horror genre (note: not the gore-fest that is so characteristic of latter day works of horror) especially for those beginning to explore the genre, and also for adolescent readers. I have used many of these stories in my Language Arts classes and received favorable responses.

Amongst my favorites in this collection are M.R. James' Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad (MR James also happens to be one of my all-time favorite horror writers, who has the ability to chill my soul through his descriptive, fluid prose), "The Willows", "Dracula's Guest" (which interestingly had been cut out of the original manuscript of "Dracula" because of the length of the novel and only published in 1914, two years after Bram Stoker's death), and "The Lottery" (one of those pieces of writing that starts off on a languid note, and builds up tension slowly but surely towards a horrifying and chilling climax).

For those whose appetite for the genre has increased after reading these tales of the macabre, I'd suggest exploring the following:
