Useful and inspirational guide
By Emily J. Morris
While I've skimmed other books pertaining to alternative/complimentary therapies as well as the nature of women, this has to be the first book that has provided a solid look at specifically female health. With a mainly Traditional Chinese Medicine approach, the book looks at the whole of the woman in regardes to the stages of a woman's life.

I love the organization of this book, with its background on feminine healing and the affinities before tackling health of each life stage. The writing is clear, the material easy to understand.

Though the book targets a few specific ailments, I do wish more was covered. There's also a little too much detail on acupuncture that didn't seem to fit with an introductory text. But the appendixes are wonderful and provide plenty of further information. One of my favorite aspects was the inclusion of traditional stories used to back up ideas.

All in all, I believe this is a great book for women with its approach to health.

Amazon.com Review
"A purr at the right time can do wonders," says Rhiow, the furry, black heroine of To Visit the Queen,. Diane Duane's mettlesome cats can work wonders with more than their purring: they're wizards, capable of casting spells, walking on air, traveling through space and time, and speaking to humans--if they choose to. In this sequel to the bestselling The Book of Night with Moon, Rhiow and her team are called in to troubleshoot a malfunctioning magical portal in the London underground. Gradually, they unravel a conspiracy that threatens to twist their reality into a nightmarish alternate history--one in which Victorian England gets a boost from future science and uses nuclear technology to terrorize the world. This perfidious design rests upon the assassination of Queen Victoria, and it's up to Rhiow, Arhu, Urruah, and the London cats to save the queen.

Duane has earned an enormous following with her stories of the unending battle between the evil Lone Power and the forces of life, here championed by Rhiow and the other wizard cats. Although her stories are usually lively reads, in To Visit the Queen, Duane takes a long time to build up to the action and burdens the narrative with large lumps of magic terminology that's more than reminiscent of computer programs or mathematical theorems. But there's a lot of fun to be had from the wheels-within-wheels universes going awry, in spotting tidbits of history, and in following the chain of events as the traitor in the pride reveals its claws. --Blaise Selby

From Publishers Weekly
Duane returns to the engaging world of The Book of Night with Moon, where wizardly cats guard the magical Gates between worlds and protect Earth from those who would upset the delicate balance of space and time. Based in Manhattan's Grand Central Station, the cultured feline Rhiow and her colleagues, the street-wise Urruah and precocious young Arhu, are ordered to London to investigate a malfunctioning Gate. It turns out someone has sabotaged the portal, turning it into a dangerous "timeslide" that snatches folks from their own time and pushes them randomly into the future or the past. But this is merely the symptom of a bigger problem: the evil Lone One is overwriting history by creating a world set on an alternate timeline, one in which nuclear weapons introduced long before their true era are being used systematically to destroy civilization. The crux of events?the break where the alternate timeline begins?is the assassination of Queen Victoria. In order to save the universe, Rhiow and her compatriots must save the monarch and recreate a long-lost spell to stop the expanding disturbance in the timelines; a youthful Arthur Conan Doyle lends a hand. Duane presents her usual felicitous mix of magical high adventure and humor, avoiding much of the preciousness that can infect anthropomorphic fantasy. Even those who don't fancy felines should enjoy this purr of a tale.

From Library Journal
When the evil power known as the Lone One opens a timeslide between centuries and worlds, the task of closing the gateway and preventing global disaster falls to a trio of feline wizards charged with guarding the Gates between the worlds. Duane's sequel to The Book of Night with Moon (Warner, 1997) continues the whimsical adventures of Rhiow and her teammates, Urruah and Arhu, who take their magical talents as seriously as they take all nine of their lives. Set in the same alternate earth as Deep Wizardry (Harcourt, 1996), this title belongs in most fantasy or YA collections.

Not "Boooring"!
By A Customer
Another reader has stated that they found both books in the series `boooring' in comparison to the books for younger reader based in the same world. I disagree with this statement. The 'Nita and Kit' books were mostly children's books and were written for children and young adults, though I agree they are some of the most amazing books I have ever read, and the fact they were written for children does not in any way hamper my love of them. "To Visit the Queen", (or as it is titled in the UK "On Her Majesty's Wizardly Service"), and the earlier book in this series ' The Book of Night with Moon' are most certainly NOT children's books, they being deeper and on a different level than the series for younger readers. I would heartily recommend both the beautifully written books in this series as well as the 'Nita and Kit' books'. None of them are in any way boring, but I would recommend being sure to read `Book of Night with Moon' before this one: for though it is possible to understand and enjoy it without the history of the pervious book, in may leave the reader somewhat confused in several places.

ailurophiles will love it!
By H. Lowe
I just finished reading the book about 10 minutes ago! What a great sequel to "Night With Moon"... it carries forward some of the unresolved feelings and events from the first book, and leaves you feeling a bit easier about them. I do disagree with some of the other reviews that found this book too drawn-out or some of the plot points contrived. The book built up slowly but steadily, not with as much action as "Night With Moon" but with more detective work on the part of Rhiow, her team, and their new allies -- more the literary equivalent of a good suspense movie than an action-hero one. And also unlike some other reviews, I didn't think the battle with the Lone One was "tacked on" or unnecessary. In fact, it was almost inevitable after the cats foil Her plans for Queen Victoria. Think about it -- if you were a selfish, vindictive Power who was absolutely sure you were going to win, and suddenly your scheme was stopped in its tracks, wouldn't you be furious and decide to rid yourself of the "obstacles" once and for all? The book even leaves room for another sequel (maybe the further adventures of Arhu and Siffha'h?) and more bliss for cat lovers. I'll be keeping my figurative whiskers attuned for it!

Cats and magic--who can ask for more?
By A Customer
I'm puzzled by the comment left by the Reader from Kentucky--this book is not about a powerful girl at all, but about cat-wizards whose job it is to guard our world from evil. In this story they travel back to the time of Queen Victoria in order to save her from assassination (and save our own world at the same time). If you love cats, you'll love the way the author presents them here!

True Believer, by Nicholas Sparks

Jeremy Marsh is a born skeptic and a science journalist who specializes in debunking the supernatural. When he hears about ghostly apparitions in a cemetery in Boone Creek, North Carolina, he leaves his beloved New York City for this small, rural town-and what his instincts tell him could make a great story. What he doesn't plan on is meeting and falling hopelessly in love with Lexie Darnell, who is sure of one thing: her future is here in Boone Creek, close to the people she loves. Now, if the young lovers are to be together, Jeremy must make a difficult choice: return to the life he knows in New York, or do something he could never do before... take a giant leap of faith.

From Publishers Weekly
Charming, divorced Jeremy Marsh is a rising star. As a dashing, successful 37-year-old Manhattan science journalist, his skeptical scrutiny of ineffective antidepressants, cults and television clairvoyants has caught the eye of North Carolina restaurant owner Doris McClellan, who invites Jeremy to bucolic Boone Creek to scoop the story of eerie mystery lights appearing in an ancient cemetery. A diviner who can predict the sex of unborn babies, Doris suspects the lights are a ghostly curse. Her beautiful librarian granddaughter, Lexie Darnell, makes a lovely, if guarded, tour guide as Jeremy revs up his electromagnetic equipment for the ghost hunt. After witnessing the ethereal graveside lights, both grow closer, much to the chagrin of local deputy Rodney Hopper, who wants Lexie for himself. Guided by sage Doris and manipulated by meddling mayor Tom Gherkin, big-city Jeremy and smalltown Lexie find that trepidation about their differences somehow manages to bloom into love. Jeremy eventually uncovers the hidden truth behind the glowing graveyard fog and departs the lush gothic environs for New York. Can love bridge the gap? Sparks (The Wedding) delivers another shrink-wrapped, reliably uncomplicated romantic confection that's light as air, smooth as silk and gloriously sweet. Agent, Theresa Park. From Booklist
New York skeptic Jeremy Marsh makes his living exposing frauds in the articles he writes for Scientific American. His latest target is a famous psychic who claims to speak to the dead. The acclaim he receives for his expose places Jeremy in the public eye with an appearance on national television. Jeremy then travels to Boone Creek, North Carolina, to search for the truth behind the mysterious lights that appear in the local cemetery. The legend is that an old curse causes the spirits to wander, and now the town wants to capitalize on the phenomena to bring in badly needed tourist dollars. But Doris McClellan, the local psychic, wants the lights debunked, and asks Jeremy to investigate. What Jeremy doesn't count on is falling for Doris' granddaughter, Lexie, the town librarian. Lexie has had enough of smooth-talking city men, and shields her heart, but Jeremy keeps trying to penetrate her tough shell. Lexie never wants to leave Boone Creek, and she believes that Jeremy will never want to stay. Although Sparks' latest starts with great potential, the main characters feel cool and distant; it is the secondary characters who embody the warmth and verve that usually mark Sparks' best-sellers. Not my favorite Sparks books but worth reading for fans
By Ratmammy
TRUE BELIEVER by Nicholas Sparks

March 25, 2005

In Nicholas Sparks' latest novel, TRUE BELIEVER, Jeremy Marsh is a science journalist whose forte is debunking supernatural phenomenon using science and technology. His latest challenge is to solve the mystery behind the rumors of ghosts living in a cemetery in the small town of Boone Creek, North Carolina. When he starts to fall in love with the local psychic's granddaughter, she does her best to dissuade him, knowing they come from different worlds and that nothing would come of this romance.

TRUE BELIEVER is a departure for Sparks, in that this is not a tragedy. It is a straightforward story of a man who is trying to solve the mystery of the ghosts in Cedar Creek Cemetery, and in the midst of working, he meets Lexie Darnell, a woman who has been hurt in the past and is afraid to love again. The two are worlds apart in terms of background, but he feels that they have a chance to make a go at it.

Lexie believes in the ghosts, as do many of the town's people. If Jeremy finds the solution to this puzzle, it would change life in Boone Creek and possibly ruin any chances Jeremy has with Lexie. But he continues on, wanting to prove that yet again he can solve any mystery that involves the supernatural.

I enjoyed this book, but it's not going to be a favorite. I have always enjoyed Sparks' tragedies (in particular MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE). TRUE BELIEVER was a well-written novel, but it lacks the "oomph" that is characteristic of his stories. The most enjoyable part of this story was the mystery behind the ghosts, but I in particular enjoyed the characters that filled the pages. Sparks always does a good job with the characters that grace the pages of his novels, and while the plot itself may lack something, TRUE BELIEVER is worth the read for any Sparks fan.

Generally liked it, but I was a little underwhelmed...
By Angela Dalecki
I became a fan of Nicholas Sparks about three years ago, when I read A Walk to Remember a few months before the movie debuted. I cried for a week. The Notebook reduced me to a sobbing wreck as well. So when I sat down to read his newest novel, True Believer, I made sure I was well-stocked with plenty of Kleenex. I was surprised to find I didn't need them.

The story is typical of Sparks' tried-and-true style of star-crossed lovers: Jeremy Marsh is a hotshot New York journalist whose life revolves around his career. His current stories involve researching (and debunking) the supernatural-when we first meet Jeremy, he's working on uncovering the sly tricks of Timothy Clausen, a John Edward-type "spirit guide." His next big story brings him to Boone Creek, North Carolina, to investigate a legend of ghostly lights in the town's cemetery. The small town of Boone Creek is pretty much the polar opposite of New York City, and Jeremy plans to get the heck out of there as soon as his research is complete.

Of course, things aren't always as easy as all that. While researching, Jeremy ends up meeting a young girl named Lexie, who runs the town library. Over the course of the week or so that Jeremy is in Boone Creek, they become friends and Jeremy quickly falls head over heels in love with her. Of course, their relationship is ultimately doomed-their homes and lifestyles are completely different, and Lexie doesn't want to give up her small, quiet life in Boone Creek any more than Jeremy wants to give up his career and fast-paced life in New York. It would take a miracle for their relationship to work-the type of miracle Jeremy doesn't believe in.

I generally like Nicholas Sparks' work, and I generally liked this book. It's not a cry-fest like some of his other novels have been, and it probably won't be one of his best-remembered books, but it's a sweet story. Despite its tendency to get a tad predictable (you can tell from the beginning that a schmaltzy ending is in store), it still works and leaves you with an overall good feeling. It's a quick read, and it's fast-paced enough to stay interesting. Overall, True Believer is a little something like an after-dinner mint-not much substance, but it's light and sweet and, in the end, leaves you generally satisfied.

Do you Believe?
By vtown
True Believer is about a guy named Jeremy and a girl named Lexie. Jeremy is a journalist for New York. Jeremy is called down to Lexis's little town because the cemetery is suppose to have ghost in it and Jeremy is suppose to investigate it. While trying to figure out the mystery Jeremy falls for a girl, Lexie. But now after all this time the question is does Lexie love him?

Lexie is the pride of the town and she runs the small library. Lexie has lived with her grandmother since she was a child. Her grandmother, Doris, is the owner of the restaurant called "Herbs" and is very popular along the town's people as well. Doris is the one who called Jeremy down to have a look at the cemetery and Doris doesn't believe that there are any ghosts. Jeremy has a feeling she is not the only one but would like the rest of the people to know there are no ghosts.

As Jeremy researches more and more he finds out that Doris is not the only one that knows there are no ghosts but she was just the only one that let on that she knew. Now the question is who all knows? Was this just one big scam or was it his imagination?

I like this book because it is like a mystery-romance type of book. It is like no other book I've ever read and it is really good. This book can not fit into any other category like the rest of the books can because it is like it s own thing. I would recommend this book to any girl no matter what type of book you like. I would have to say that anybody from teenagers to grandmas would have to say this is a good book and would enjoy reading it.

Revised, Updated...and Better
By Robert Morris
NOTE: The review which follows is of the revised and updated (i.e. most recently published) edition co-authored by Robert B. Miller and Stephen E. Heiman with Tad Tuleja.

I read the first edition of this book when it was published 18 years ago. Hence my curiosity about this edition. What's new? In fact, a great deal. Miller and Heiman have thoroughly revised the original material, "page by page, to tighten the prose, clarify explanations, and provide up-to-date examples from [current and recent] Miller Heiman clients." For example, they have refined their explication of Concept and product (as indicated in Chapter 4) and expanded their discussions of Question Types while providing clarifications of two concepts which, apparently, often prove puzzling: Action Commitment and Valid Business Reason.

They have also included discussion of Single Sales Objective in Chapter 5. (This concept was originally developed within the Strategic Selling program and is now a component of Conceptual Selling.) "Most dramatically, we have revised the entire sequence of the Conceptual Selling `modules'...Another new element is a question-and-answer epilogue where we address some of the interesting challenges which our clients have posed to us."

Miller and Heiman respond to 15 questions generated by their "continuing dialogue" with those who enroll in various Conceptual Selling workshops. For example:

#1. Isn't Conceptual Selling just another name for consultative selling?

A: "There are similarities, to be sure, but they're not the same." Miller and Heiman pay due respect to Mark Hanan (author of another business bestseller, Consultative Selling) while explaining how his ideas -- which they greatly admire -- and theirs differ. See the complete response to this question pages 348-349.

#6. Having a Valid Business Reason implies that you know something about the customer before you go in. How do you do that when you're making a cold call?

A: "You're still making cold calls? The whole point of a Valid Business Reason is to render them unnecessary." How so? See the complete response to this question on page 349.

#14. Is Unique Strength another name for "competitive advantage"? And should I compare my company's Unique Strengths to those of the competition?

A: "Not exactly." Miller and Heiman briefly explain that, in economic theory, a "competitive advantage is a point of superiority that one company has over its competitors" whereas a "Unique Strength is much more specific than that: It's the contribution [italics] one company's solution can make make to [italics] one customer in [one] area that the customer perceives as better than any competing solution." See the complete response to this question on pages 361-362.

NOTE: In Buyer-Approved Selling: Sales Secrets from the Buyer's Side of the Desk, Michael Schell also suggests all manner of strategies and tactics by which to formulate and then present what Miller and Heiman identify as a Unique Strength. Presumably they and Schell agree with Warren Buffett, however, who once suggested that cost is what we charge but value is what someone else thinks it's worth. Nothing is a Unique Strength (or whatever else you call it) unless so perceived by customers and, equally important, by prospective customers.

Everyone in sales should have her or his own "toolkit." Some of its contents are provided by the given employee, others are provided by formal training and/or a supervisor, and still others from a book such as this. Long ago, I realized that strategies are "hammers" and tactics are "nails." The former drive the latter. That said, I presume to offer a caveat. Keep in mind this bromide: a camel is a horse designed by a committee.

Obviously, it would be foolish to stuff a "toolkit" with everything offered by Miller and Heiman in combination with everything offered in other excellent books such the aforementioned Consultative Selling and Buyer-Approved Selling as well as Neil Rackham's SPIN Selling, Anthony Parinello's Selling To VITO (The Very Important Top Officer), Michael Bosworth's Solution Selling: Creating Buyers in Difficult Selling Markets and CustomerCentric Selling, and Keith M Eades's The New Solution Selling: The Revolutionary Sales Process That is Changing the Way People Sell.

Presumably Miller and Heiman agree that readers of books such as theirs must be aware of everything available in what could be called "The Salesperson's Super Hardware Store." The challenge is to select and then use effectively those tools which are most appropriate to the given marketplace.

Given how attractively priced the most recently published paperback editions of The New Strategic Selling and The New Conceptual Selling are, I highly recommend both. My guess (only a guess) is that The New Conceptual Selling will be most valuable to those who have sales management and/or sales training responsibilities as well as to those whose career ambitions include obtaining such responsibilities.

Combine it with "Strategic Selling" and start selling!
By Laurens Bonnema
I read this book to prepare myself for a salescourse at the company where I work. As it turns out I am no salesman, but the trainer did note that I had a very good insight into the salesprocess. So good, in fact, that he advised me to become a selling consultant for my company instead of a salesman. All that, thanks to having read this book in combination with "The New Strategic Selling" (also by Heiman). If you really want to start selling, you must read this book!

same old sales ideas
By Bob M. Lansburg
After reading enthusiastic reviews I bought this and the Conceptual Selling book. A basic premise is the salesperson's ability to ask questions, and not just talk. Maybe this is a revelation for someone new to sales, but as I kept reading I found this book just restating the obvious. I've been in sales for 25 years, and this book is nothing new. Catchy title, they obviously have a lot of big name clients. Good book for a rookie though, but an insult to veteran salespeople.

Amazon.com Review
Lalita Tademy's riveting family saga chronicles four generations of women born into slavery along the Cane River in Louisiana. It is also a tale about the blurring of racial boundaries: great-grandmother Elisabeth notices an unmistakable "bleaching of the line" as first her daughter Suzette, then her granddaughter Philomene, and finally her great-granddaughter Emily choose (or are forcibly persuaded) to bear the illegitimate offspring of the area's white French planters. In many cases these children are loved by their fathers, and their paternity is widely acknowledged. However, neither state law nor local custom allows them to inherit wealth or property, a fact that gives Cane River much of its narrative drive.

The author makes it clear exactly where these prohibitions came from. Plantation society was rigidly hierarchical, after all, particularly on the heels of the Civil War and the economic hardships that came with Reconstruction. The only permissible path upward for hard-working, ambitious African Americans was indirect. A meteoric rise, or too obvious an appearance of prosperity, would be swiftly punished. To enable the slow but steady advance of their clan, the black women of Cane River plot, plead, deceive, and manipulate their way through history, extracting crucial gifts of money and property along the way. In the wake of a visit from the 1880 census taker, the aged Elisabeth reflects on how far they had come. When the census taker looked at them, he saw colored first, asking questions like single or married, trying to introduce shame where there was none. He took what he saw and foolishly put those things down on a list for others to study. Could he even understand the pride in being able to say that Emily could read and write? They could ask whatever they wanted, but what he should have been marking in the book was family, and landholder, and educated, each generation gathering momentum, adding something special to the brew. In her introduction, Tademy explains that as a young woman, she failed to appreciate the love and reverence with which her mother and her four uncles spoke of their lively Grandma 'Tite (short for "Mademoiselle Petite"). She resented her great-grandmother's skin-color biases, which were as much a part of Tademy's memory as were her great-grandmother's trademark dance moves. But the old stories haunted the author, and armed with a couple of pages of history compiled by a distant Louisiana cousin, she began to piece together a genealogy. The result? Tademy eventually left her position as vice president of a Fortune 500 company and set to work on Cane River, in which she has deftly and movingly reconstructed the world of her ancestors. --Regina Marler

From Publishers Weekly
Five generations and a hundred years in the life of a matriarchal black Louisiana family are encapsulated in this ambitious debut novel that is based in part upon the lives, as preserved in both historical record and oral tradition, of the author's ancestors. In 1834, nine-year-old Suzette, the "cocoa-colored" house servant of a Creole planter family, has aspirations to read, to live always in a "big house" and maybe even to marry into the relatively privileged world of the gens de couleur libre. Her plans are dashed, however, when at age 13 a French ‚migr‚ takes her as his mistress. Her "high yellow" daughter Philomene, in turn, is maneuvered into becoming the mother of Creole planter Narcisse Fredieu's "side family." After the Civil War, Philomene pins her hopes for a better future on her light-skinned daughter, Emily Fredieu, who is given a year of convent schooling in New Orleans. But Emily must struggle constantly to protect her children by her father's French cousin from terrorist "Night Riders" and racist laws. Tademy is candid about her ancestors' temptations to "pass," as their complexions lighten from the color of "coffee, to cocoa, to cream to milk, to lily." While she fully imagines their lives, she doesn't pander to the reader by introducing melodrama or sex. Her frank observations about black racism add depth to the tale, and she demonstrates that although the practice of slavery fell most harshly upon blacks, and especially women, it also constricted the lives and choices of white men. Photos of and documents relating to Tademy's ancestors add authenticity to a fascinating story. (Apr.)Forecasts: The success in recent years of similarly conceived nonfiction, like Edward Ball's Slaves in the Family, proves readers can't get enough of racially themed family history. Tademy, who left a high-level corporate job to research her family's story, should draw larger-than-average audiences for readings in 11 cities.

Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Tademy halted a career as a high-powered technology executive to research her family's history. Her findings--four generations of strong-willed black women who survived slavery and racial injustices, maintained strong family ties, and left a legacy of faith and accomplishment--are transformed here into a powerful historical novel. The tale is told from the perspectives of Suzette, Philomene, and Emily, all born and raised in a small farming community in Louisiana. Suzette was raped by one of her master's relatives, and this set a pattern of race-mixing for her descendants. Philomene, Suzette's daughter, is desired by a powerful white man, Narcisse, and, after her slave husband is sold away and she loses her children, succumbs to his attentions. But she uses her sexual allure and a gift for premonition to secure protection and, after slavery ends, land and education for her family. Philomene's fierce determination reconstitutes the family on land she has secured from Narcisse. She is also determined that her daughter, Emily, will have every possible advantage, including, eventually, a wealthy white protector. Throughout three generations, however, none of the women escapes the social conventions forbidding interracial marriages; each is abandoned or driven away when her white protector wants to produce legal progeny. The incidental, progressive whitening of the family ends when Emily's son, T. O., marries a dark-skinned woman and reclaims his racial identity, inaugurating the line from which Tademy comes. Including old photographs and documents verifying the reality that underlies it, this fascinating account of American slavery and race-mixing should enthrall readers who love historical fiction. Unforgettable
By Ladyslott
I do not generally like Oprah Books. So when Cane River was chosen as a group read for my reading group, I was very reluctant to read it. I could not have been more wrong. A beautifully written family saga, Cane River was one of the best books I have read in recent years. Putting one strongly in mind of the book Roots by Alex Haley, this book is a novelization of the family history of Lalita Tademy. Told through the eyes of four women, all born into slavery, it shows the strength and courage of people who survive through the frequent upheavals thrust upon them.
We are introduced to the matriarch of the family Elisabeth, a slave from Virginia sold into a new plantation and taken from her husband and children. Here begins the story of the Cane River women, Suzette, Philomene and Emily. I was compelled to read every detail of their lives from slavery to freedom. I shared their heartbreak, joy, suffering and triumph, on the journey to freedom. The book paints a long lasting impression of the power of love and family. A book I will think of for a long time to come. I highly recommend you read this unforgettable book.

Wow!
By Marilyn C. Smith
I don't know if anyone could read this book and NOT feel somehow changed by it.
Although written as fiction, the documents, family histories and pictures give not-so-silent tribute to this REAL family, and their very real experiences. I found myself pouring over the pictures, flipping back frequently to put a face with a name, and thinking the whole time "It's like Lalita Tademy sat down and talked with her ancestors!"
I would love to see this book hit the "required reading" lists of high schools. It's a lesson in so many things, not the least of which is the author's tenacious search for details, documentation and something else...something hard to define...but it's almost like she slipped into a time machine and brought back the past for us. I can't wait for her next book! I feel like I've learned a more valuable lesson than any text book could have taught. I learned instead from Elisabeth, Philomene, and Emily.

Touching Work of Historical Fiction
By Sandra Mitchell
Cane River is a novel that will give the reader so many different reasons to appreciate it. As with several of Oprah's picks, this is not one I probably would have pulled off the shelf on my own, but I'm so glad that I read it. Part of what makes this novel so special is that Lalita Tademy, who was a successful career woman at Sun Microsystems, gave up her high paying salary to research her geneaology. After tracing her family's history, and gathering as many photos and facts as she could, she wove the pieces together into this historical work of fiction creating Cane River. Similar to so many previous stories of slavery, reading this will make you ashamed at the history of our country and saddened at how these lives were torn apart and abused through slave trading & treatment. But what is most powerful in the story is the strength of these three generations of women-Suzette, Philomene & Emily; how they overcame adversity and pain and kept fighting for each new generation to live a better life, despite their own sadness. This novel explores each of these inspiring ladies lives, the men in their lives & their families. It explores issues such as racism, both white vs. black as well as racism within the black community (light coloring vs. dark coloring). It examines the consequences of inter-racial relationship as well as how slaves were handled and treated. How can a person own a slave, but in some way feel the slave is part of the family? One can't help but feel how simple our lives are today compared with all of the hardships these women faced. The sacrifices that family will make for one another is truly remarkable. Tademy did a fantastic job in recreating her family's history and sewing it into an incredible story.

Amazon.com Review
When America aspired to break free from Britain, the real-life David-and-Goliath situation required that a full-blown cadre of dynamic leaders arise immediately from the revolutionary populace. As history shows, it did. Now, Donald T. Phillips--writer, speaker, and mayor of Fairview, Texas--uses those events to suggest ways that today's businesspeople can likewise overcome tough odds and achieve success. Goal-setting, communication, and risk-taking, Phillips writes in The Founding Fathers on Leadership: Classic Teamwork in Changing Times, are just a few of the traits to be learned by studying Washington, Jefferson, and their colleagues.

From Library Journal
Plumbing the depths of history for insight and inspiration is a common practice in management and leadership books, with varying success, as these two titles illustrate. Dunnigan, the author of over a dozen war-related books (e.g., Digital Soldiers, LJ 10/1/96), and software executive Masterson review the business practices and techniques of 12 famous military leaders?Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Charlemagne, Genghis Khan, Edward III, Gustavus Adolphus, Frederick the Great, Napoleon, Ulysses Grant, Douglas MacArthur, George Patton, and Norman Schwarzkopf. Chapters, arranged by leader, include a brief, all-too-casual biography of each, followed by the challenges they faced and the solutions they enacted. Opening and closing chapters try to put the techniques described into a modern perspective, but many of the solutions offered, such as the ruthlessness of Genghis Khan, should have no place in today's corporate culture. Phillips (Lincoln on Leadership, Warner, 1992) uses such Revolutionary War figures as Washington, Jefferson, Paine, Franklin, and John Adams to illuminate concepts of management. Unlike Dunnigan and Masterson, he organizes his chapters by theme, e.g., "Inspire the Masses," "Build Strong Alliances"?using these historical figures and their words where appropriate to illustrate a point. Phillips also provides a bibliography for further reading. While Dunnigan and Masterson's work is not recommended, academic and large public libraries should consider Phillips.?Michael R. Leach, Harvard Univ.

Not One Of Phillip's Better Books....
By JR
This book started out good, but ran out of gas in the last few chapters. Not much more insights than just recounting history. Phillips other book on Martin Luther King is so outstanding that it makes this book look weak.

Do Not Waste YOur Time or Money
By Along Red River of the North
Knowing a little bit of history can be very dangerous. This book is crammed full of errors, mistakes and inaccuracies. You can't learn history by just reading the executive summary. Worst of all, you can't write history by stringing together fifteen chapters of "to do" lists. If you want to learn about leadership, read D.H. Fischer's Washington's Crossing.

A Legacy of "Unselfish, Genuine Leadership"
By Robert Morris
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book while learning a great deal from it as Phillips examines the lives and recorded thoughts of those who, "individually and collectively, stepped forward to lead the way" to creating an entirely new nation. "They did so, in part, because they realized from profound change spring new opportunities -- and this was a time when there would be a chance for them to make something happen." Why did their leadership prevail? "Because they understood human nature, they knew that major change is more evolution than revolution; that tyranny and dictatorship are contradictory to the rights of the individual; and that leadership, in and of itself, is actually in harmony with human nature."

After an especially well-written Introduction, Phillips organizes his material within four Parts: Preparing for the Revolution, Mobilizing and Motivating, Winning the War, and finally, After the Revolution. At the beginning of each of the book's 15 chapters, he identifies "team leaders" who personify the qualities of leadership examined in that chapter; then at the end of each chapter, he provides a summary of key points, "The Founding Fathers on Leadership." Phillips is perhaps most eloquent when, in the Epilogue, he observes: "Clearly the founding fathers cleverly and shrewdly designed democracy to foster the art and process of leadership. And in the final analysis, the principles of leadership are nothing less than the principles of humanity: treating people with respect and dignity; raising awareness; creating a vision and involving others; bonding together through alliances and teamwork; risking all; learning from mistakes; refusing to lose; inspiring rather than coercing; listening; compromising; caring; ever changing and ever achieving."

Throughout his book, Phillips includes hundreds of specific examples of these qualities of leadership as they are revealed in the recorded thoughts, feelings, and (especially) the actions of the various founding fathers. He recalls many memorable moments such as when (in 1796) Washington stopped at Valley Forge one last time en route to Mount Vernon and encountered a farmer named Woodman, a veteran of the Continental Army who had also endured the harsh winter at Valley Forge. According to Phillips' account, the farmer greeted his former commander. Of course, no one knows what was said but it can be assumed that each had special significance for the other when meeting at what has since become a national shrine.

There are hundreds (thousands?) of books about "leadership" now available and countless more yet to be written. The best of them, by assertion or by implication, focus on many of the same values which Phillips reveals in such abundance among the founding fathers. To his credit, Phillips suggests rather than imposes the correlations he sees between leaders of the American Revolution and those who most effectively lead organizations in the 21st century. Obviously, their respective circumstances are substantially different in many respects but all of them share certain basic values previously indicated. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to consult the remarkably eclectic "Bibliography" which Phillips provides. To those works I presume add the separate biographies of John Adams by Ellis and McCullough as well as Ferling's Setting the World Ablaze and O'Toole's The Executive Compass.

Amazon.com Review
The transformation from a manufacturing-based economy to one that's all about service has been well documented. Today it's estimated that nearly 75 percent of Americans work in the service sector. Instead of producing tangibles--automobiles, clothes, and tools--more and more of us are in the business of providing intangibles--health care, entertainment, tourism, legal services, and so on. However, according to Harry Beckwith, most of these intangibles are still being marketed like products were 20 years ago.

In Selling the Invisible, Beckwith argues that what consumers are primarily interested in today are not features, but relationships. Even companies who think that they sell only tangible products should rethink their approach to product development and marketing and sales. For example, when a customer buys a Saturn automobile, what they're really buying is not the car, but the way that Saturn does business. Beckwith provides an excellent forum for thinking differently about the nature of services and how they can be effectively marketed. If you're at all involved in marketing or sales, then Selling the Invisible is definitely worth a look.

From Library Journal
"Don't sell the steak. Sell the sizzle." In today's service business, author Beckwith suggests this old marketing adage is likely to guarantee failure. In this timely addition to the management genre, Beckwith summarizes key points about selling services learned from experience with his own advertising and marketing firm and when he worked with Fortune 500 companies. The focus here is on the core of service marketing: improving the service, which no amount of clever marketing can make up for if not accomplished. Other key concepts emphasize listening to the customer, selling the long-term relationship, identifying what a business is really selling, recognizing clues about a business that may be conveyed to customers, focusing on the single most important message about the business, and other practical strategies relevant to any service business. Actor Jeffrey Jones's narration professionally conveys these excellent ideas appropriate for public libraries.?Dale Farris, Groves, Tex.

From Booklist
Advertising professional Beckwith startles and disarms all potential doubting Thomases with one fact--that by the year 2005, 8 out of 10 Americans will be working in a service business. Chapters here are remarkably short; they are intended to convey one point (summarized in one sentence in boldface italics) and are blessedly free of jargon. Hints and tips cover the conventional four Ps of marketing--product, promotion, place, and price--in an irreverent and iconoclastic manner; nothing is sacrosanct. Stories from every corner of life illustrate and drive home messages. In a quandary about pricing? Read the Picasso story to remember, "Don't charge by the hour; charge by the years." About the value of research? Forget questionnaires and focus groups; instead, ask individuals what improvements are needed--not the dreaded "What don't you like?" A very human, much-needed book to savor and be refreshed by. Barbara Jacobs

Stunningly Useful and On Point--Vital to Gold Collar Workers
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
I bought this book because I thought it might be relevant to "gold collar workers", those who manufacture and sell knowledge that is quite "invisible" or intangible. What a great book this is! Every person that relys on their brain for a living, whether as an employee or consultant or teacher, can double their *perceived* value by reading and applying the lessons of this book.
A few of the author's well-discussed and well-illustrated ideas are offered here to complement the many other favorable reviews:
1) Simplify access to your work! [Learn how to create executive summaries, tables of contents, hyper-links, etc.--don't assume that everyone knows your value and is willing to spend time digging into your work.]
2) Quality, speed, and price are *not* in competition, they must be offered simulaneously and at full value.
3) What is your promise or value proposition? Are you just showing up, or does every day offer a chance for you to show your value in a specific way?
4) Don't just be the best in your given vocation, *change it* for the better and redefine what "best" means!
5) Sell your relationship (and your understanding of the other person's needs), not just your expertise in isolation. Your boss or client has three choices and you are the last: to do nothing, to do it themselves, or to use you. Focus on being the first choice every time.
6) Execute with passion--and if you are a super-geek or nerd that does not have a high social IQ, form a partnership with a super-popular person and put them in front.
There are many other useful thoughts in this book. If you want to know how to sell the invisible, the intagible, the value propositions that revolve around knowledge and insight instead of bending metal and assembling things, this is absolutely the best book one could ask for. Really nicely presented.

Become Visibile with a not so Visible Service
By M. Bennett
There are several hundred books available on the market about selling. Most of these books are based on tangible products, something the consumer can see, feel and recieve an almost immediate satisfaction after the purchase.
This books is one of the few available about selling services. When a consumer purchases a service from you or your company, they are paying for your promise to deliver someting in the future. This is especially true in the world of finance and insurance industry. A financial advisor sells a fund and the buyer expects to recieve x amount of interest on his in vestment at a later date. In the insurance industry, a client buys an automobile insurance policy but will probably never see the benefits of the sinsurance policy until he or she has an accident. How do you sell something that has no immediate benefit to the client? Read "Selling the Invisible".
There are twelve very easy to read chapters with many short examples (lacking a little bit on the proof side). I do believe it is an excellent book but it is too North American oriented to be carried over one to one for european, asian or middle-eastern markets. There will have to be a few cosmetic adjsutments made to be able to adapt to other makets but it is still a catalyst to start doing things differently.
The chapters and some of the main messages of those I recieved from the author Harry Beckwith:
Planning - 1.) Accept the limititations of planning 2.) Don't value planning for its result;the plan 3.)Don't plan your future plan your people. 4.)Do it now. The business obituary pages are filled with planners who waited. 5.)Beware of focus groups; they focus on today and planning is about tomorrow. 6.)Don't let the perfect ruin good. 7.)Don't look to experts for all your answers. Ther are no answers, only informed opinions.
How Prospects Think - 1.) Appeal only to a prospects reason, and you may have no appeal at all 2.) Familiarity breeds business; spread your word however you can. 3.)Take advantage of the recovery effect. Follow-up brilliantly.
Pointing and Focus - 1.)Stand for one distinctive thing that will give you a competative edge. 2.)To broaden your appeal, narrow your position. 3.)No company can position itself as anything, your prospects and customers put you there. Positioning is something the market does to you. You can only try and influence your position. 4.) Your position is all in the peoples minds. Find out what that position is. 5.)Focus. In everything from campaign for peanuts to campaign for presidents, focus wins.
Pricing - 1.)Don't assume that logical pricing is smart pricing. Maybe your price which makes you look like a good value, actually makes you look second rate. 2.)Setting your price is like setting a screw. A little resistance is a good sign. The reason 10% of the population are chronic complainers of price. 3.)Beware of the deadly middle in pricing. You communicate that as well... We are average. 4.)Beware of the rock bottom in pricing...you communicate we are substandard. 5.)Value is not a position.
Naming and Branding - 1.)Give your service a name, not an abbreviation 2.)Generic names encourage generic business. 3.)In service marketing almost nothing beats a brand. 4.)Building a brand doesn't take millions. It takes imagination.
Communicating and Selling - 1.)Make the service and the prospect feel compfortable 2.)Saying many things usually communicats nothing. 3.)Good basic communicating is good basic marketing. 4.)If you think your promotional idea might seem silly or unprofessional, it is. 5.)Prospects do not buy how good you are at what you do. They buy how good you are at who you are. 6.)Far better to say to little than too much. 7.)People hear what they see. Watch what you show. 8.)Give your marketing a human face.
Nurturing and Keeping Clients - 1.) Watch your relationship balance sheet, assume it is worse than it appears and fix it. 2.)Don't raise expectations you cannot meet. 3.)To manage satisfaction, you manage your customers expectations. 4.)Out of sight is out of mind. If you are not meeting regularly, you are not in their mind.
Overall an excellent book that contains a lot of reasons as to why service marketing is different and how to keep yourself visible amongst the competition.

Digestible Insights
By Michael L. Perla
As others have written, this book is not about creating a complex marketing design or plan. What it does offer is quick, a page or so, USA today-like snippets of insightful observations about marketing in general, and service marketing in particular.
As the title indicates, selling and/or marketing an intangible service is a different process than tangible product marketing. As the author writes, most people cannot evaluate the skills of an accountant, or lawyer, or any number of professional services. We often look for tangible proxies that indicate the professional's level of expertise and success (e.g., fancy offices, degrees on the wall, presentation, etc.).
If you read this book in its entirety in one session, you are bound to remember nothing in the sea of facts and tidbits (click on the table of contents link to get a feel for the topic areas). I've found the best way to read the book is to ponder on a few points every night and/or week, while attempting to apply them to a salient situation in your life. Overall, this book has some interesting and useful insights, and is a good read when you have a few minutes to spare.
