From Publishers Weekly
This breast health handbook, written by talk-show host O'Donnell (whose mother died of breast cancer), Axelrod (a New York City breast surgeon) and health writer Semler, attempts to offer a humorous alternative to other cancer guides. Using a Q&A format, the authors begin with a detailed description of breast anatomy as well as breast-cancer screening and risk factors, and then move into diagnosis, treatment and "aftercare," closing with a quick look at promising new therapies. Axelrod's explanations are comprehensive and accessible; she carefully explains such complex issues as various biopsy techniques and the exact goal of radiation therapy. Without subheads, however, readers may have to scout around to find all the valuable information about, for example, lymphedema, a common side effect of breast surgery dispersed throughout the book. The laughs are intended to come from O'Donnell's mock answers to the real questions. Unfortunately, some may make readers wince: to the question "I have a sore on my nipple. Can it be cancer?" O'Donnell posits, "Don't worry, it's probably just leprosy." Most baffling are the word-searches puzzles that contain terms such as "scar" and "nausea." Unfortunately, the humor and games will be likely to turn off readers well before they can take advantage of Axelrod's information. (Nov.)

From Library Journal
Daughter of a breast cancer victim, talk show host O'Donnell lends her considerable popularity to this book by Axelrod, chief of the Breast Center, St. Vincent's Comprehensive Cancer Center, New York, and journalist Semler (All About Eve: The Complete Guide to Women's Health and Well-Being). Their idea is to open women's eyes to information that could save their lives while providing a bit of a laugh in the process. And that information, presented here in the form of questions and answers, is excellent. Axelrod covers all aspects of breast health: what is normal, conditions that may require attention but are not cancerous, breast-feeding, etc. She then moves on to cancer risk, diagnosis, treatment options, aftercare, and, finally, "Breast Cancer: The Future." All proceeds go to four leading breast cancer organizations. So what could be bad? Plenty, and it's spelled R-O-S-I-E. O'Donnell contributes jokes, limericks, and songs and responds to each question before Axelrod proceeds. Unfortunately, O'Donnell's sense of humor fails here. Her texts are asinine and embarrassing, e.g., "I have a sore on my nipple. Can it be cancer?" O'Donnell: "Don't worry, it's probably just leprosy." There are a number of books that deal with cancer humorously (e.g., Julia Sweeney's God Said, "Ha!" LJ 6/15/97), but O'Donnell's attempts are more likely to turn off women who would benefit from this book. Recommendation: Buy several copies for your patient health collection and tell patrons to pass over those little caricatures of O'Donnell's head, which indicate her input. They'll feel better in the morning.ABette-Lee Fox, "Library Journal"

Breast Cancer 101 with some time out for laughter
By Linda Bily
This is an easy-to-digest book of general facts about breast cancer. It is easily understood by the lay person with no prior knowledge of this disease and is made palpable by Rosie's outrageous sense of humor. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to get a beginner's education on the subject of breast cancer.

a gift
By Christine
I got this book as a gift for my mother when she was diagnosed with it, and she loves it! We don't have anyone else in our family who's had breast cancer so it was pretty scary when she was diagnosed because we have hardly any knowledge of the facts of the disease. She loves it though because as she said, the internet is a great source of information but it is too broad. This book is very specific and is written in plain english which is why I like it for her. She likes it because of the practical advice such as wearing a sports bra after surgery for better support. She also found the Dr. Susan Love's Breast book very helpful with the technical information.

Factual and funny on such a serious subject!
By A Customer
This book focuses on the seriousness of breast cancer but does add some humor to help decrease anxiety in women facing this horrible disease. The book also offers search and find puzzles, jokes, and words to some of Rosie's songs you may have heard on her show. Numerous questions are answered in easy to understand format. There are a couple of illustrations scetched in black and white. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about breast cancer, prevention, and treatment. There are breast cancer organizations, along with other helpful resource information, found in the back of the book, many with telephone numbers and email addresses. I find this book to be a very good resource for anyone wanting to learn more.

Amazon.com Review
Casey Jordan is a successful Texas criminal defense attorney who likes to take on the kinds of cases that grab headlines and CNN interviews. Her ambition is stoked when she gets an opportunity to represent her former law professor in a capital murder case. Eric Lipton has been accused of the mutilation death of a young law student with whom he was sexually involved. Although the evidence points to his guilt, Casey is confident that she can get him off and certain that he is innocent. It's a promising setup for a legal thriller, but a seemingly unrelated murder in the novel's opening pages will nag at readers. By the time the relationship between the two crimes is teased out, the solution to the first crime seems like an anticlimax.

Lipton is a truly evil man. Casey is not particularly likable either: her hardscrabble background has propelled her into a sterile, loveless marriage to a wealthy man, and her childhood dream of defending indigent clients now seems like a remnant of youthful idealism. The novel's more interesting figures are Donald Sales, the law student's father, a traumatized Vietnam veteran whose grief and rage fuels the narrative, and Bob Bolinger, an Austin cop who believes that Lipton is a serial killer responsible for other, similar crimes across the country. Like Lipton's pathology, which is unveiled long after his guilt is proven to the reader's (if not the jury's) satisfaction, Casey's change of heart--about her client, her husband, and her ideals--is late and lukewarm. Before it occurs, Tim Green has a chance to showcase his heroine's courtroom skills and illustrate why she's among the fastest legal guns in the Lone Star state. A workmanlike addition to a popular genre, Letter of the Law won't keep you up at night, but it's a satisfying hammock read on an Indian summer afternoon. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Former NFL star and current attorney Green takes his fiction (Double Reverse, etc.) in a new direction with this rough-but-ready read, offering not his first legal thriller but his first novel to be set apart from the gridiron and the pigskin. Green's plotAhotshot female attorney gets accused killer off the hook, then learns he did it and is menaced in turnAfeels as dated and clapped-together as a jalopy, but it runs fast, powered by crude narrative energy and carrying within its rickety frame a host of comfortably familiar characters. When Casey Jordan defends her smarmy former law professor, Eric Lipton, against charges that he slay-mutilated law student Marcia Sales (Lipton was seen fleeing the crime scene), she attacks the case with the same ambition that has swept her from a dusty Texas farm to the pinnacle of Austin legal and fine society; Casey even insinuates in court that the victim's father, Donald, killed his daughter out of jealousy. But seconds before the jury foreman announces, "Not Guilty," Lipton whispers to Casey that he did the deed. Is he joking? Apparently not, as evidence surfaces that he's a crazed serial killer. Character motivation isn't Green's forte: Casey is persuaded that Lipton is evil and that she should help the vengeful Sales p?re (and the cops) track him down only after Sales kidnaps, binds and terrifies her to show her what his daughter went through. Casey's change of heart after such treatment defies credibility, as do the novel's over-the-top climax, which sounds loud echoes of Night of the Hunter, and the killer's persona, which is so cartoonish you expect his dialogue to appear in balloons. Other charactersAparticularly an aging cop and an over-the-hill FBI agentAare handled with more nuance. This novel wilts next to any Grisham or Baldacci, but for brisk airplane entertainment, it'll do fine. Agent, Esther Newberg. 150,000 first printing; major ad/promo; author tour; simultaneous Time Warner Audio. (Sept.)

From Library Journal
Green (Double Reverse) scores big with a thriller that takes place in Texas and is peopled by well-developed characters. Casey Jordan, a rising star in the legal profession, discovers in traumatic ways the difference between justice as practiced in the courts and right and wrong in real life. Jordan helps clear Eric Lipton, a law professor at the University of Texas, of the charge of disemboweling and murdering Marcia Sales. An instant before the jury foreman reads the verdict, Lipton whispers his guilt to Jordan. After the trial, suspicion rests on Donald Sales, the victim's father. Distraught with grief, hating Lipton, and humiliated by Jordan's trial accusation of incest, Sales abducts Jordan to teach her some of the pain his daughter suffered. Guessing that Lipton is a serial killer, Police Sergeant Bob Bolinger enlists the help of the FBI. Humanizing Lipton's monstrousness would have given him more depth, but this is still highly recommended for general collections.DMichelle Foyt, Russell Lib., Middletown, CT

Great Ride!
By Jacque McConnaghy
Unlike his previous novels that are set in the NFL arena, Tim Green takes you into the inter workings of the legal system. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire ride.
Eric Lipton a famous law professor is accused of a bizarre murder, the evidence is stacked against him. Enter Casey Jordan, his former student whose beauty is only surpassed by her brains. Lipton picks Casey to defend him knowing that she has the ability to create reasonable doubt in the minds of the twelve jurors selected to judge him. Casey takes the case thinking is will launch her into the national spotlight and give her the recognition she desires. She gets more than she bargined for, not only is she fighting for justice, she is fighting for her life.
The roller coaster ride begins and you are left trying to figure out who the guilty and innocent are. This is an non-stop thriller that is the best work from the author to date.
Loved the book, couldn't put it down.

A thriilling chiller
By A Customer
In Austin, the police have a witness who swears seeing law professor Eric Lipton running from the murder-mutilation of law student Marcia Sales. Eric hires a former student Casey Jordan to defend him. Believing in the innocence of her former mentor, Casey pulls out all the stops to prove a shadow of doubt, turning the spotlight on the victim's violent father Donald as the possible killer. As the chief juror reads the verdict, the pompous Eric informs his attorney that he in deed did the crime.

Stunned by Eric's confession just as he is acquitted, a distraught Casey is abducted by an irate Donald. He plans to teach the lawyer first hand what happened to his daughter before she was killed. Already convinced her former instructor is a psychopathic serial killer, Casey joins with Donald to try to bring down Eric before someone else dies.

Tim Green known for his NFL days and his sports mysteries turns to a serial killer legal thriller with his current novel, THE LETTER OF THE LAW. The story line is filled with raw action that never eases up until the final page. However, the characters and their motives never fully develop and some of their actions require leaps across the Grand Canyon. Mr. Green shows the energy of a blitzing linebacker targeting the hit, but the quarterback suffers a concussion before the game is over. This tale filled with action and excitement is for those readers who enjoy hard hitting from the blind side.

Good Legal Thriller
By Roz Levine
Casey Jordan is the best defense lawyer in Texas and is looking to stretch that claim to best defense attorney nationwide. To that end she likes big, headline making, provocative cases, those with the biggest clients and the biggest risks. When Eric Lipton, nationally known criminal law professor, is accused of brutally murdering a former student, he hires Casey to defend him and she's thrilled. Though a tough case, Lipton was arrested leaving the country with the victim's bloody underwear in his luggage, it's just the kind of headline grabbing, career advancing trial she likes. And Casey does an admirable job, tearing apart defense witnesses and even laying suspicion on the victim's father. Just before the jury foreman reads the not guilty verdict, Lipton leans over and whispers into Casey's ear..."I really killed her". Now as other bodies begin to pile up, Casey is caught in a real bind, her duty to her client as an attorney and her need to see justice done. Tim Green has written a fast paced, page turner with well developed, interesting characters, powerful, riveting scenes and enough twists and turns to keep you off balance and guessing to the very end of the book. As a practicing attorney, his knowledge of the ins and outs of our criminal justice system, lend real credibility to the story. The Letter of the Law has it all, great characters, an action packed tight plot and a very satisfying ending with a few surprises thrown in.

I was just out of college when my friend's mother gave me this book. My friend and I rolled our eyes - we were *definitely* not self-help-book readers. I still am not. But many times over the past ten years I have referenced this book in conversations with friends. I have found myself applying many of the tips that Ms. White provides. You don't have to be a hyper-ambitious, ladder-climbing corporate professional to get something out of this book. Among the tenets that have stood out to me over the years are:

-Don't always need to be liked

-Don't smile too easily

-Don't apologize too quickly

-Don't clean up after other colleagues (especially men)

-Don't be a perfectionist at the expense of innovative thinking or getting things done

Simply the notion that men and women (in broad strokes, at least) behave differently and are treated differently in the workplace was a novel idea to me, coming out of a liberal arts college during the mid-1990s. Reading this book gave me an awareness that everyone needs. Obviously, no one book will apply perfectly to each of us, so you can't go looking for that. But do look to this book for many useful ways of seeing the professional world and your own role in it.

Smart girls can be both good and gutsy!

Hated it! The piece on Julia Roberts was opportunistic and simply proved this woman may well be short on ethics and long on selling hype. Those who chose to overlook what is awful about this book are the very people the author is seeking.
Not my cup of tea! Hope my review was gutsy enough!

The New Victorians: A Young Woman's Challenge to the Old Feminist Order, by Rene Denfeld

The author shows that feminism in the 1990s is anti-men and obsessed with date rape, pornography, and goddess religions, and today's young women have rejected it by the thousands. The author, a working woman and an amateur boxer, pulls no punches about who's at fault and why. The author after dozens of interviews shows how the feminist leaders of the 90s - with their victim-mentality and anti-male stance - are the new Victorians, sexually repressive and self-righteous while insisting they are morally superior to men. The gauntlet has been thrown before the women's movement.

Arguing that contemporary feminism has bogged down in an often repressive extremism, Denfeld contends that her generation needs to reframe the movement along more tolerant lines.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Books in which young women bash the feminism of their mothers' generation have become something of a growth industry of late: Katie Roiphe's The Morning After: Sex, Fear, and Feminism on Campus (LJ 9/15/93) and Christina Hoff Summers's Who Stole Feminism: How Women Have Betrayed Women (LJ 6/15/94) come immediately to mind. This latest contribution to the genre, by a freelance writer and amateur boxer, argues that while many under-30s women believe in (and desperately need) feminist causes, they have been alienated by the radical goddess-worshipping wierdos who (she maintains) now dominate the women's movement. The thesis that feminism is in danger of dissipating its once-vital energies in a neosocial purity campaign has been much elaborated on elsewhere, but here it is undermined by a host of contradictions, a reliance on pop-culture sources such as Glamour magazine, and an unfortunate tendency to generalize from carefully selected tidbits of evidence. There is a place for this sort of thing, but it is only in large popular collections, where there is certain to be some demand.

From Booklist
Just how is feminism currently defined and what is its meaning to the women--especially younger women--of today? Denfeld challenges the often disturbing and generally extremist nature of contemporary feminism by examining many issues being batted about by leading theorists. Key themes are debated; these include the antipornography activists' attacks on feminists who are against censorship in any form, the relevance of goddess worship, the trend in current dogma to condemn women's strides toward sexual liberation, and the tendency to inflate statistics that perpetrate a view of nearly all women as being victimized by men. Denfeld is neither conservative nor reactionary. Her observations are clear-sighted appraisals of how the movement alienates the great majority of women. She concludes with a treatise on reclaiming feminism, setting forth ideas on working toward meaningful change in such areas as child care, abortion rights, and sexual violence. Alice Joyce

DOES THE MAINSTREAM WOMEN’S MOVEMENT POSE A “DANGER TO WOMEN’S RIGHTS”?
By Steven H Propp
Rene Denfeld is a journalist and death penalty investigator, who has also written Kill the Body, the Head Will Fall: A Closer Look at Women, Violence, and Aggression, All God's Children, and The Enchanted: A Novel.

She wrote in the Introduction to this 1995 book, “For women of my generation, feminism is our birthright… We are the first generation to grow up expecting equal opportunity and equal education, as well as the freedom to express our sexuality. We are the first to assume what feminists had to force society to accept against its deeply ingrained prejudice: that we are the equals of any man. This belief may translate into the pursuit of a career or it may mean demanding respect for raising children—women of my generation believe in the right to choose. Given, then, this huge debt we owe feminism, who do so many women my age refuse to join the women’s movement? Why do we adamantly reject the feminist label?” (Pg. 2) She continues, “The fact is that feminism has changed---dramatically… the movement for the most past has taken a radical change in direction. It has become bogged down in an extremist moral and spiritual crusade that has little to do with women’s lives… It has lost contact with the ideas that sparked the second wave---individual empowerment and political activism---and has substituted a worldview that speaks to the very few, while alienating the many. For women of my generation, feminism has become as confining as what it pretends to combat.” (Pg. 5)

She adds, “There are, in essence, two different women’s movements alive today. One is a cultural movement… expressed in the independent actions of thousands of feminist-thinking women who fight for equality in their lives… But this movement… isn’t organized, and most of its members do not call themselves feminists. That’s because that word refers to the OTHER women’s movement---the organized, ideological form of feminism represented by groups such as NOW, women’s studies courses, and feminist leaders. It is this organized women’s movement---which defines the feminist label---that is the focus of this book.” (Pg. 6)

She goes on, “It is said that Victorians placed women on a pedestal… As the moral saviors of humanity, women were held to a much higher standard than men---and punished when they could not achieve it. In pushing their varied causes, today’s feminists promote a similar vision of womanhood… Today’s feminists are remarkably similar to Victorians in significant ways, and not only in their vision of sexuality. This is clear through an examination of several different causes and trends in today’s movement that, if anything, are a complete reversal of the movement’s progress during the seventies. This is the New Victorianism. And this is why women of my generation are abandoning the women’s movement.” (Pg. 10-11)

She asserts, “If the New Victorianism continues to flourish… [it] will mirror the sad history of … the suffragist movement… [that] not only represented social policies that served conservatives… [and] had alienated an entire generation of young women… Unless we can reclaim feminism, this women’s movement will die too… We must toss New Victorianism in the rubbish can and return to a movement that addresses women’s concerns while respecting their personal lives and empowering their choices; a movement that prioritizes issues as women themselves prioritize them: child care, political parity, economic opportunity, abortion rights, and birth control; a movement that espouses the feminist ideal… that women can and should be equal in full partnership with men, working together, both free from restraining sex roles… We must return to a movement that, quite simply, represents the majority of women.” (Pg. 20-21)

She states, “the truth is that man hating and antiheterosexuality are firmly entrenched and loudly espoused in in today’s movement. Young women encountering feminism are confronted with male bashing and made to feel they have to justify their sexual choices. This can even apply to lesbians if they don’t toe the line by restricting themselves to proper feminist ‘egalitarian’ sex. The women’s movement seems preoccupied with what women do in the bedroom and with whom they do it.” (Pg. 26)

She notes, “Women of my generation, thanks to earlier feminists, have choices… But do current feminists really think that it’s feasible for poor and working-class women to ‘avoid close relationships and working relationships’ with men (in other words, divorce their husbands and quit their jobs) in order to chase after some separatist ideal? Where will they find jobs without male coworkers? How will they put food on the table without work? What if they like their husbands and have male friends? Maybe some well-off feminists can afford to practice separatism, but for the majority of women, the suggestion is not only a joke but an insult to the economic and personal realities of their lives.” (Pg. 36-37)

She argues, “If feminism is the struggle for ALL women’s rights, then lesbian issues would have to come after efforts for such things as political parity, child care, and an end to job discrimination. In a movement for gender equality, whatever affects the most women MUST come first… Headway on these issues will improve life for nearly everyone, including lesbians. But today’s women’s movement seems to ignore this reality. And the reason is simple. Many current leaders have moved… into… the promotion of lesbianism as a political stand. In a nutshell, they believe that what women do in bed is of major concern to the movement---and… only lesbian sex is considered acceptable. Young women hear this time and time again, from women’s studies classes to women’s organizations, and it is a major reason behind their alienation from feminism.” (Pg. 46-44)

She contends, “We have been told that feminism … stands for things that once were considered the antithesis of feminism: helplessness, hysteria, paralyzing fear, sexual repression, and finally, retreat.” (Pg. 88) She adds, “It doesn’t seem to disturb or surprise feminist activists to find themselves agreeing with the same ultraconservatives who have tried to censor feminist literature. And it shouldn’t. They’ve been working together.” (Pg. 94) She continues, “Today’s feminists are friendly with groups that worked against the ERA, fight hard to outlaw abortion, want to restrict birth control, and try to censor feminist literature. Yet leading activists---under the banner of women’s rights---are giving these antifeminists the most explicit kind of approval: political alliance.” (Pg. 99) She summarizes, “current feminists… want to make sex a secret again. They want us to believe that exposure of our bodies degrades us, defiles us, and incites male lust… They want us to… ‘veil’ ourselves once more---in silence and shame.” (Pg. 123)

She observes, “The question of whether a Stone Age goddess religion existed is not easily resolved… But for many in the women’s movement, the subject is closed. Not only are feminist spiritual leaders quite certain that for thousands of years Europe worshipped a goddess, they are adamant that their cultures were virtual paradises, nurturing, nonviolent, nature-loving, and reverent toward ALL women… This vision of a golden age is crucial to the promotion of goddess worship by feminists: Put women in charge and the world will exist in peaceful harmony. But credible archaeologists beg to differ with this idealized past…” (Pg. 139-140)

She suggests, “Many young women encountering feminism today can’t be blamed if they feel they’ve encountered a den of conspiracy nuts. Attend women’s organization meetings or pass by a rally, take a women’s studies course, or pick up a feminist book and it is nearly impossible to avoid the ‘patriarchy.’ … this all-encompassing system is blamed for all of the world’s troubles; it is the amorphous force that works behind the scenes to oppress women and to undermine feminism… Our language, government, entertainment, education, you name it---everything is patriarchal; and for that reason, the enemy of women… By claiming that nearly every aspect of culture is controlled exclusively by men, current feminists implicitly portray our world as one great spiderweb of interconnected plots, all threads held by a faceless enemy whose sole goal is to oppress women.” (Pg. 155-156)

She says, “in The Beauty Myth… Yale graduate Naomi Wolf likens the beauty methods of upper-middle-class women to the medieval torture instrument known as the iron maiden… When women who exemplify the American dream and the fruits of feminism---educated in the finest universities, getting paid for the careers of their choice… write books comparing their lives to medieval torture, it’s not surprising that many lower-income women don’t find much in common with the movement.” (Pg. 161)

She summarizes, “We still need a women’s movement: a movement to achieve complete equality between the sexes… What we don’t need is what feminism stands for today.” (Pg. 211) She concludes, “these feminist trends form New Victorianism. They have changed the feminist agenda from fighting for equality and choice to promoting socially, sexually, and politically repressive ideals. They have created… another version of ‘true womanhood,’ a static, confining, sexist ideal of femininity… And like the descent into repression by the first wave of feminism, this New Victorianism poses a profound danger to women’s rights.” (Pg. 239)

She continues, “It seems that the chasm between the movement and young women… strikes a feminist sore spot… Feminist leaders would say that the problem is us: our supposed apathy, ingratitude, and some lurking antifeminist beliefs yet to be uncovered. Young women might say it’s the movement itself.” (Pg. 248) She states, “None of the issues expounded by the New Victorians… promise to improve society concretely for future generations. They are diversions. And younger people… understand this. We don’t have the time or energy to waste or moral crusades or flights of fancy. We don’t have time for New Victorianism.” (Pg. 252-253)

Obviously a book intended to be controversial, Denfeld’s book is obviously rejected by the “traditional” women’s movement. And it is at least questionable whether Denfeld is qualified to speak on behalf of her entire generation. Nevertheless, this is a stimulating and thought-provoking book, that will be of great interest to anyone interested in feminist theory---particularly those of Denfeld’s “my generation.”

A Credible Challenge to What Has Become an Orthodoxy
By Brian Curtis
Rene Denfeld's is one of those books that make you say, "I knew it! It's not just me! I've been waiting for someone to say this!" She presents an excellent post-boomer perspective (rare enough these days, outside of computers and technology) on what has happened to the once-proud and purposeful feminist movement, and an insightful and well-documented description of how it has changed over the past two decades.
As Denfeld illustrates with quotes from today's generation of young women, the official "feminist" movement has, in their eyes, lost its way. It is no longer about fighting for equal treatment under the law, equal pay in the workplace, or equal respect as individual human beings--all worthy goals which some Gen X and Y'ers have admittedly almost taken for granted in these more enlightened times. Instead, it has come to stand for Woman as Victim. The current focus of the core feminist movement in the past few years has been on protecting women, portraying them as helpless (yet noble and virtuous!) little hothouse flowers who need shielding and special treatment to survive against the onslaught of the big bad world and mean ol' men (all of whom are cast as violent, misogynistic predators, of course). Is it any wonder that so many young women who believe in equality nevertheless are reluctant to call themselves "feminists?"
The movement has been hijacked, as Denfeld amply demonstrates with an array of studies, statistics, and--most tellingly--quotes from the most prominent current leaders of the feminist movement today. What was once considered extremist has become mainstream as the cause has rigidified and polarized itself.
In addition, the book's writing style was a pleasant surprise. Too many books on political issues, particularly gender and family themes, are awkwardly and poorly written, mainly consisting of half-formed thoughts strung together with no regard for logic, organization, or thoughtful presentation. Denfeld is no ranter; she has methodically presented a number of well-researched and carefully organized points and concepts, and followed them up with discussion that is clear and thought-provoking. I found myself engrossed with every chapter.
Two minor quibbles:
1. As another reviewer has commented, I'm not sure that the Victorian analogy is consistent throughout the book. I recognize that in our society, "Victorian" represents backward and repressive thinking, and certainly this is an accurate description of what mainstream feminism has become. However, some elements of the current state of the movement are too new to fit the mold, and the analogy (but not the validity of the critique itself) becomes strained at points.
2. In addition to what feminism currently stands for, I would have liked to see some discussion of exactly how and why the feminist movement was transformed--although that could well have doubled the length of the book. The results of the change are clear, and clearly deplorable--but some more attention to the nature and origin of the change might provide some added insights into how to get feminism "back on track" for the future.
But all told, this is an excellent book that cogently presents and discusses some important ideas for modern equality-minded women who don't want the baggage and restrictions (Restrictions! In a movement purportedly concerned with women's freedom to choose!) that accompany modern mainstream feminism. The fact that many mainstream "old movement" feminists would probably hate it, despite its firm stance in favor of independence and equality for all women, illustrates just how far astray the movement has gone.

Reminding Us All of the Real Feminism
By Rick
Denfeld is dead on target in her scathing but articulate attack on the new feminism. Contrary to what some reviewers have claimed, her writing is lucid and direct--so much so that my EFL graduate students here in Beijing have found it easy to digest and highly compelling reading. Now they have begun to understand what prompted the patronizing antics of so many so-called feminist leaders who spoke at the women's conference here five years ago.
I applaud Denfeld's daring, although as an amateur boxer, she'd probably shrug her shoulders and say, "aw, it was no big deal to write this stuff." Still, it is bold to put your publishing career on the PC chopping block.
As for the book's arguments, she documents her sources well and manages to deftly demystify the often jargon- laden writings of many of the new feminists she so roundly criticizes. I was especially glad to see the even-handed manner with which she treated Gloria Watkins, aka bell hooks. Earlier in the book she credits this feminist critic but takes the latter to task in subsequent references. In contrast, Denfeld's regard for Friedan is sensitive, even poignant.
The book maintains a motif: that a kind of neo-Victorian disposition dominates the new feminists. Although the motif is indeed at times strained, it holds up well overall.
This book should be required reading in womens studies courses which purport to offer divergent feminist points of view but, in fact, assign mostly the radical fringe while conveniently and hypocritically ignoring the emerging mainstream thought (or was it always there beneath the turgid surface?) The sad irony, communicated well in this work, is that the new feminists have marginalized the very women they claim to defend.
I look forward to reading her new, co-authored work on related issues.

From Publishers Weekly
The most impressive thing about this gripping legal thriller is what it doesn't do. Dugoni, a lawyer who coauthored a nonfiction book about an Idaho worker brain-damaged in 1996 by cyanide fumes, opens his debut novel with a wrongful death attorney in San Francisco, David Sloane, about to make his closing remarks defending a corporation in a similar case. Sloane, who has won 14 cases in a row, hates his arrogant client and must face an obviously hostile jury. But instead of devoting many chapters to the case, Dugoni quickly moves into some unexpected and very interesting territory: a recurring childhood nightmare Sloane shares with former CIA agent Charles Jenkins, apparently a complete stranger. Meanwhile, unstoppable West Virginia police detective Tom Molia investigates the suicide of a top adviser to the president, and what he finds draws Sloane and Jenkins closer to the truth behind their shared terror: an international conspiracy 30 years in the making. All of Dugoni's characters have a fresh and believable edge, and there is plenty of action in far-flung settings. One looks forward to Sloane's return. (Mar.)

From Booklist
In this rapid-fire fictional debut, a personal friend of the president has turned up as the victim of a not-so-apparent suicide--but not before mailing a package to David Sloane, a golden-tongued corporate lawyer with a mysterious past. It doesn't take long for unknown baddies to kill (a) a kindly old woman, (b) an eager rookie cop, and (c) two beloved dogs, thus making matters personal for Sloane, rumpled police detective Tom "Mole" Molia, and ex-CIA operative Charles Jenkins. Neither plotting nor prose can be accused of subtlety or originality, and readers looking for legal action or psychological depth best look elsewhere. Still, the action keeps coming, so omnivorous thrill seekers who favor Martini and Grisham may want to give Dugoni a look. The jury's still out, though, on whether he has the potential to play in their league. David Wright

Review
In this debut thriller, bitter men chase the single sweet thing life has to offer them: revenge. David Sloane, however, is not among the vengeful. Though a decorated ex-marine, he's on the mild-mannered side, an ordinary citizen, a hard-working lawyer-brilliant, successful, but lonely, too, more so than he's prepared to acknowledge even to himself. Practicing in San Francisco, he's had 14 noteworthy wins in a row, and no one who's seen him sway a jury predicts a snapped string in the foreseeable future. And yet someone out there doesn't like him. Or, to put a slightly different spin on it, someone has singled him out for negative attention. His apartment has been ransacked, but nothing is missing. Clearly, an error has been made, David tells himself at first-mistaken identity. Wrong. And soon enough, mysteriously, he comes into possession of something ruthless people will unhesitatingly kill for-a file. It contains a 30-year-old secret, so wicked, so blood-drenched and so explosive that the nation's corridors of power would be cluttered with trashed careers if it were to be revealed. It also contains information important to David for highly personal reasons. In search of dangerous truths, David begins a perilous journey. During it, he finds friends and allies, a woman to love and a whole series of implacable enemies. Dugoni's well out in front until the last 50 pages or so when an unfortunate fusion of over-cooked plotting and overwrought prose results in a tumble. Still, a writer to watch. (Kirkus Reviews)

I have a few of Dugoni's other books so when this one was offered for 99cents,I thought why not try it? It is the best money I have ever spent! David Sloane is a remarkable man. I love the way Dugoni takes different threads and weaves them into a masterful story.

Amazon.com Review
From the author of Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy comes a guided excavation for women who suspect that there's something more to life than the top layer pursuits of money, sex, and love. In service to these restless souls who want to scratch beneath the surface, Ban Breathnach offers tidbit-sized essays that help women unearth pay dirt--their reason for being. Using archaeology as her frame of reference, Ban Breathnach suggests imaginative exercises at the end of each chapter, which she refers to as "Field Work." Although it occasionally feels overdone, the archaeology metaphor works well--helping readers unearth their past choices and circumstances to better understand the soul's current mission. Early in the book, Ban Breathnach offers this enticing invitation to go on a spiritual dig: "Besides the fact that your soul is one of the last unlooted sources of the miraculous, with discoveries as spectacular as any found in the Delta of Venus or Egypt's Valley of the Kings, you can embark on a soul trip and be back before anyone even notices you're missing. They might be curious about that gleam in your eye and that flush on your cheek, but I'll never tell if you won't. Are you game? We're heading to the sacred site of your soul." --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
"Passion is truth's soul mate," writes Ban Breathnach in this follow-up to her stupendously successful Simple Abundance (1995). The author who helped millions discover the overlooked richness of everyday life by practicing gratitude now appends that message by urging us to heed our yearning for "something more." Understanding that most women are better at sacrificing themselves than at discovering and honoring their own passions, Ban Breathnach urges them to see the spiritual wisdom of "reembodiment," excavating from under layers of fear and disappointment their own moments of connection with a deeper, more authentic self. Offering a collection of teaching stories drawn from her own honestly rendered experience, as well as stories and pithy quotes from her friends and a host of notables (Rumi, Virginia Woolf, Madonna et al.), Ban Breathnach nudges readers beyond "settling and stumbling and surviving." Although she aims to help readers explore the depths of their own hearts by using an "illustrated discovery journal" (a collage of images and text meant to express the tastes and strivings of readers' authentic selves), the real power of this work, despite some workaday writing and concepts, lies in the unpretentious sincerity and raw immediacy of Ban Breathnach's many variations on the assertion that "At the end of the day, or at the end of a life, all we have is ourselves and love. And if we love ourselves, truly, madly, deeply, all we have is all we need." Writing not as a guru but as a friend who has learned to cherish her past, Ban Breathnach will galvanize her wide readership to believe we were all put on earth for something more than indifferent marriages and discarded dreams. Serving up self-worth and "repose of the soul" as the most priceless of attainments, she is a friend indeed. 750,000 first printing; One Spirit Book Club main selection; first serial to Good Housekeeping; Time Warner audio; author tour.

From Library Journal
Drawing a potent metaphor for self-discovery from the process of excavation, Ban Breathnach (Simple Abundance, Warner, 1995) addresses care of the soul in archaeological terms, showing women how the ability to learn from past experience leads to deeper self-knowledge that allows them to recast lives of authentic joy. She discusses such painful aspects of experience as surviving, settling, stumbling, sensing, and searching for "something more," which every woman undergoes as she dismantles her past. The author devotes a good portion of the book to the difficulties of marriage and love relationships, and although her own experiences in this realm are painful, she remains positive and hopeful. This practical book of inspiration for women who habitually place others' needs before their own is sure to be a popular addition to most public libraries.

A rich, rich read
By A Customer
This is one of a handful of books I've read that changed the way I look at myself -- and another on that short list is Simple Abundance which I'm working through for the 3rd time as I write "morning pages" daily. This is NOT a sequel to SA -- in lots of ways it doesn't seem to be written by the same Sarah -- but by a more mature, more worldly wise, more "evolved" one. Repeatedly in my reading of SM, Sarah brought me to tears--because she knows me--and made me see myself much more clearly, made me face some issues I've ignored for 50+ years--and helped me see a path ahead. The margins are crammed with my notes to Sarah, to myself, to my past. A person who thinks this is only a book about how bad most men are couldn't have read with a woman's heart. Is there bitterness? Yes--life has its bitter spots, too. But is there hope? Darned right. And if a reader doesn't see the "gratitude" and "joy" in the message of this one, I'm sad for that reader. It's not a "ruffles and lace" book at all. It's a no holds barred look at life--with lots of real-life examples, many of which aren't pretty. On page 59, she writes, "Could there be anything more important than living without regrets?" I think the whole book is about HOW to live without regrets.

Compelling...
By A Customer
Unlike many of the more recent reviewers here, I did not read "Simple Abundance" before I started the sequel. Also unlike many of the recent reviewers, I found "Something More" to be incredibly insightful, wonderfully written and a true gift FROM as well as TO the Soul.
I found the life stories within this book to be beautifully encouraging and inspiring, rather than depressing and anger-filled as several have noted. Life is an adventure, fraught with disappointment and sadness, as well as all the other "cozy" feelings we seek and need. And I, for one, am glad she didn't pull any punches and told things just as they are.
Excavating, searching, looking and definitely *finding* your Authentic Self takes a lot of courage. We all have it. THAT's what this book is all about and it gives us some concrete tools with which to do this. Thank you, Sarah, for daring to speak your Truth and helping so many of us along the way.
Read it. You won't regret it if you listen to your heart along the way.

More appropriately: Breaking Up 101
By Stacey
I am a nineteen-year-old college student. I have never been married, and currently have no prospects of doing so. I struggle through mid-terms. I live in a dormitory with a group of amazing friends, my second family. My life is hopelessly and joyously flawed.
When I finished reading Simple Abundance and returned it to my bookshelf with a satisfied sigh, I left it with a newly-found contentment and an insatiable hunger to be myself--whoever that ended up being. A family woman? A career gal? A chemist? A teacher? Suddenly, prestige (as it is defined by the world)did not matter, as long as I knew that I was doing what my true self was begging me to do.
When I came across Something More by accident, I bought it without hesitation, hoping for yet another shot of self-esteem booster. While the writing style is artful and refreshing, the content was a complete departure from what I had come to love in Simple Abundance. Since I have never known the pain of divorce, I felt that most of the book did not apply to me since break-ups, rather than authenticity, were the theme. I also felt that the book as a whole did not have the cohesiveness of the original; at some points, it just wandered.
If you are a woman who is trying to overcome a painful divorce, Something More may be just what you have been looking, but for those of you who are searching for more self-discovery, re-read Simple Abundance instead.

From Library Journal
Liu is a Chinese physician and Qi Gong master who believes that he was chosen to bring Eastern and Western systems of medicine together into a complementary whole. Now practicing traditional therapies in California, Liu tells his story with the help of Perry, who coauthored the best-selling Saved by the Light (Wheeler, 1991; Random, 1994. reprint) with Dannion Brinkley. Partly biological, partly philosophical, and partly prescriptive, the book is written in the first person, which gives it a casual feel. The somewhat overly long first half describes Liu's quest to become a Qi Gong master. The second half is a more clinical description of the Qi Gong process, which uses a patient's own energy fields to achieve a state of "radiant health," or wellness, with a regimen of diet, exercise, and herbal remedies assisting in the process. Liu illustrates his method with case studies and includes recipes for healing foods. Qi Gong may seem odd to Western sensibilities, but Liu is careful to point out that it should be undertaken in conjunction with standard medical treatments and with the knowledge of a physician. Recommended for libraries with a large alternative medicine collection or where demand is high.?Betty Braaksma, Thunder Bay P.L., Ontario

From Booklist
In the first third of this book, Liu tells how he was instructed in one type of Chinese healing by Master Kwan, who lived in a three-room mountaintop cave and looked on the difficult climb to it as a test of motivation for patients, students, and apprentices. Kwan's striking diagnoses--achieved apparently by using only his eyes--Liu shows to be neither paranormal nor miraculous but the result of intense study and long experience. Once Liu learned the lesson of humility, Kwan became teacher rather than taskmaster. Later, when Liu, having taken his M.D., worked in a Western-style Shanghai hospital, he gradually brought his bosses around to believing Chinese medicine had much to offer. In the book's remaining two-thirds, Liu reports on several cases to show how he thinks and works; relays many herbal recipes; and describes, with illustrations, helpful exercises for both patients and those desirous of keeping good health. Liu seems to understand himself and other people, and he urges a close relationship between Chinese and Western medicines. William Beatty

An in-depth look at Master Hong's journey in becoming a Qi Gong Master. I have purchased and given away many copies of this book to friends as an introduction of what Qi Gong can do in the hands of a true master and how Qi Gong is so important in maintaining and keeping our health in harmony.
