From Publishers Weekly
In St. John's sexy contemporary, staid size 10 Clarise Robinson, top salesperson at Eubanks Elegant Apparel, is determined to use the company retreat to go after her secret love, best friend and boss, Ethan Eubanks. Self-consciousness has kept her from pursuing him in earnest, but as Clarise turns 30, she decides it's "high time she at least tried to locate her wild side," and the office trip is the perfect opportunity: Tampa, Fla.'s Gasparilla Pirate Festival (think Mardi Gras on peg legs). With a new, body-hugging wardrobe and a sexual to-do list, Clarise decamps to Tampa, and while she drunkenly flashes her "Robinson Treasures" for trinkets, Ethan discovers his feelings for her are quite different outside the office. Amid plentiful and inventive sex, though, those old inhibitions take hold of Clarise and Ethan, who can't quite come clean about their sticky feelings. The hot fun is occasionally dampened by some distracting purple dialogue, and hobbled by a too-long ending. Still, this is steamy reading that should appeal to those in the Sex and the City crowd who aren't getting their fill from standard chick lit. (Sept.)

From Booklist
Pleasingly plump sales clerk Clarise Robinson is turning 30, and she's decided that it's time to set her wild side free. This includes doing something about her secret crush on Ethan Eubanks, co-owner of Eubanks Elegant apparel, the upscale clothing store where she works. Ethan is Clarise's best friend and shows no inclination to move their relationship to a romantic level. Clarise also intends to go to the raucous, rowdy Gasparilla Pirate Festival, Tampa's version of the Mardi Gras, for the first time, where she's promised herself she'll let her inhibitions go, maybe earning a few strings of beads by flashing her finest assets. St. John (Good Girls Don't, 2005) continues to show her flair for comedic timing and dialogue in her latest chick-lit romp. Readers who enjoyed Meg Cabot's curvy, spunky heroine, Heather Wells, in Size 12 Is Not Fat (2006) will also cheer for St. John's plus-sized, spirited, newly confident femme fatale. Shelley Mosley

Starts slow-- smolders-- ends with an "aww"
By Mintheshoe
I found this book at our local thrift store where I often go to find used books. I thought it looked like a cute, motivational book for females who aren't tiny and since I am a high school teacher, I thought it would be great for my female students.

I finished reading a different series and decided to read this before I put it on my shelf for students to pick from. I am sure glad I read it before putting it out there!! It has some very heated and sexy sexual encounters described in full detail. While I enjoyed it (thoroughly), I thought it would be a little too much for my 9th graders. Needless to say, I will be passing it on to my adult friends.

The book starts out rather slowly. We learn about the background of the main character and her boss/best friend. It drags on and we have entirely too much of the inner dialogue going on. I feel as if the author was a bit repetitive in telling us how Clarise thought she was too overweight but thought her boss was gorgeous. Furthermore, we have too many pointless conversations between Clarise and her granny, sister, friends, coworkers, etc. LET'S GET TO THE GOOD STUFF ALREADY!! We finally do in chapter 10, I just hate that it took me 138 pages to get there. From that point forward, I couldn't put the book down and found myself giggling and salivating continuously. This is what every woman dreams of-- no matter what she may say.

It ends with a big "AWWWW, HOW SWEET!" I have to say that the reader might want more steam in the end, but you will be left with a sweet taste in your mouth (no pun intended-- see page 228 and 285).

The sexiness and sweetness of chapter 10 and beyond make up for the flaws I have listed. I will look for another book by this author!

Great book
By Leanna Hiner
I enjoyed this book, although as a size 2 I guess I'm not a real woman. I think that most women can appriciate how the main character in this book has always felt that no man would find her curves sexy.

ok but not the best
By LeavesFall
Story was really slow.... I rarely don't finish a book fully but I skipped chapters in this books. Too much expository writing...not enough dialogue. GREAT sex scenes.

From Publishers Weekly
From the start, Patterson's Women's Murder Club series (1st to Die; Second Chance) has felt like high-concept TV with a smart edge, featuring an appealing and reliable cast of four female crime busters (a cop, a prosecutor, a medical examiner, a reporter) who race along byzantine plot lines humming with blood and sex, romance and heartbreak. But Patterson is an author who will detonate readers' presumptions for the sake of story, and in the series' third installment, the prolific author, working with frequent collaborator Gross (The Jester, etc.), defies expectations in a shocking way. Readers will love him for it. San Francisco Homicide lieutenant Lindsay Boxer, who narrates most of the action, is jogging with assistant DA Jill Barnhardt when Lindsay notices two things: first, bruises on Jill's shoulder; then the explosion of a nearby townhouse, into which Lindsay rushes to save a child. With the juxtaposition of these two plotlines, Patterson jumpstarts this enjoyably convoluted tale. The townhouse, home to a greedy CEO and his family, was destroyed by members of a terrorist group calling itself "August Spies"; Lindsay's chase after the group, which commits further killings, brings her into close proximity to what promises to be a new series regular, Joe Molinari, deputy director of the Office of Homeland Security. Love blooms for Lindsay but, meanwhile, love has curdled at Jill's house, where Jill's husband is abusing her. Then comes the big surprise, and the story's remainder plays out at high emotion and warp speed. There's a calculated feel to all that happens, but clever manipulation of an audience serves Patterson as well as it served Hitchcock: his fans will only clamor for more.

One of James Patterson's best loved heroines is about to die
By Briana
The #1 bestselling new mystery series of the past decade comes roaring back with 3rd Degree, a shockingly suspenseful thriller featuring the Women's Murder Club.

One of James Patterson's best loved heroines is about to die. Detective Lindsay Boxer is jogging along a beautiful San Francisco street when a fiery explosion rips through the neighborhood. A town house owned by an Internet millionaire is immediately engulfed in flames, and when Lindsay plunges inside to search for survivors, she finds three people dead. An infant who lived in the house cannot be found - and a mysterious message at the scene leaves Lindsay and the San Francisco Police Department completely baffled.

Then a prominent businessman is found murdered under bizarre circumstances, with another mysterious message left behind by the killer. Lindsay asks her friends Claire Washburn of the medical examiner's office, Assistant D.A. Jill Bernhardt, and Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas to help her figure out who is committing these murders-and why they are intent on killing someone every three days.

Even more terrifying, the killer has targeted one of the four friends who call themselves the Women's Murder Club.

Which one will it be?

While the investigation rages furiously, Lindsay works very closely with a federal officer assigned to the case. At the same time, she learns that one member of the Women's Murder Club is hiding a secret so dangerous and unbelievable that it could destroy them all.

TOO REAL FOR COMFORT
By Melody Lee
It doesn't matter if it's people from foreign countries or people right here on American soil, we have to be so cautious these days and that's not how we were raised.

I know this is a fiction book, but every writer researches the subject matter before beginning a new book. San Fransisco was lucky to have Boxer, with her never giving up attitude and for bringing in Joe Molinari from Homeland Security. This was a very real problem and anything could and did happen to innocent people.

Well worth reading.

Deja Vu Anybody?
By Tara Chevrestt
This series is still good and I am still enjoying it for the second time, but I did get a little deja vu where Lindsay Boxer is concerned. Seems she has a fondness for greeting her male co workers at the door in only a towel. Anybody else make that connection? Nevertheless, the novel, the third in the Women's Murder Club series is still entertaining and this time there is a shocking twist. Somebody dies. What I love about this series is that not everything is bright and dandy for these very realistic women and bad things happen to good people like in real life. This particular twist in the series follows terroism. An extreme environmentalist group or some such is terrorizing the citizens of San Francisco and Lindsay, Jill, Claire, and Cindy have to get to the bottom of it before one of them dies. While all the terrorism is going on, Lindsay has a romance and Jill has some issues in her personal life that a lot of women readers out there will relate to. This one has a little less Lindsay, more Jill, but is as usual, told from Lindsay's point of view.

Amazon.com Review
Before Simple Abundance was a bestselling book, it was a highly successful workshop taught by author Sarah Ban Breathnach. Returning to the workshop format, Ban Breathnach has written this workbook-style companion guide. Devised as a month-by-month course, this 12-chapter book offers reflective lessons on topics such as "Choice As a Spiritual Gift," "The Love of Play," and "Sacred Connections." At the end of each chapter Ban Breathnach lists "Soul Assignments," which include penetrating questions alongside lighthearted assignments: going on "creativity excursions" or learning to "color outside the lines" of life.

Ban Breathnach possesses a contagious playfulness that permeates the book's workshop structure. Critics call her frivolous, but fans call her inspirational. Even her resources promise a good time, including her amusing appendix on "Cinematherapy," which lists suitable movies for every chapter. (For example, chapter 3, "Romancing the Soul," could be enhanced by watching Love in the Afternoon or A Man and a Woman.)

"Consider this workbook a personal tutorial," she writes. "Just you and me.... But please let's think girls' night out instead of study group as we sift and sort. Gratefully, I've finally learned to choose fun over earnestness any day of the week, and I'm not going back. How about you?" Not a chance, Sarah. Not a chance. --Gail Hudson

From the Back Cover
"In the beginning, Simple Abundance was the workshop, not the word. In this new book, I've culled a year's worth of lessons for us to ponder, mull over, meditate upon, work through, and hopefully process...so we can enjoy the life that's waiting for us."

Before Simple Abundance and Something More became New York Times bestsellers helping millions of women discover their authentic selves, author Sarah Ban Breathnach was running workshops that actively guided and inspired others onto the Simple Abundance path. Now Sarah re-creates the heart of these workshops on the page, bringing their essence to women everywhere.

"Some of these spiritual lessons are ones I've embraced, embodied, and swear by. Others are the ones that try my soul during the day and haunt me during dark nights. I consider them spiritual secrets meant to be shared."

In twelve chapters, one for every month, here is a whole year of soulcraft. From gratitude to play, from connecting to the sacred to facing your fears, Sarah provides thoughtful exercises, explorations, excursions, and other creative, pragmatic, hands-on ways to probe your deepest feelings to reveal your authentic self.

"Consider this workbook a personal tutorial. Just you and me. Maybe add a few of your closest pals. But please, let's think girls-night-out instead of study group as we sift and sort. Gratefully I've finally learned to choose fun over earnestness any day of the week and I'm not going back. How about you?"

Deliciously self-nurturing
By Stephanie Kreiner
As in her other books, Sarah lovingly encourages the reader to spend some well-deserved time finding out about herself, her world and available resources to enrich and enlighten. Plenty of room in the margins to take notes and record ideas which are very likely to surface in this well thought out and exquisitely written book.

An At-Home Workshop to Find Your Authentic Self
By Donna
Ever since starting on the SIMPLE ABUNDANCE journey with Sarah Ban Breathnach's first book, I have longed for an opportunity to learn one-on-one from the Queen of simplicity and authenticity. We may not be able to meet Sarah face-to-face, but now anyone can enjoy a workshop atmosphere in the comfort of her own home. Women caught up in the day-to-day deluge of deadlines, appointments, and commitments can now curl up with a pillow and excavate their authentic self. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to savor their life instead of living in a blur.

Another winner!
By A Customer
Guess I'll make it a unanimous (so far) 5 star rating for Sarah's latest. Like her other stand-alone books, it's filled with pithy humor, undeniable wisdom and gentle guidance--like having a "big sister" to guide you through the journey of self-discovery, sharing equal parts of joy and sorrow, pain and growth. Designed with the idea that each of the 12 chapters takes one month, to be completed in one year, I'd say that's about right. It isn't a workbook to rifle through, but one to relish, savor, ponder and ultimately digest. Thank you, Sarah, for yet another book to help in the excavation process of our Authentic Selves. The sharing of your talents has made us ALL the more richer.

Stone Cold (Camel Club Series), by David Baldacci

The #1 bestselling author of The Collectors and Simple Genius returns with STONE COLD...an unforgetable novel of revenge, conspiracy, and murder that brings a band of unlikely heroes face-to-face with their greatest threat.

Oliver Stone, the leader of the mysterious group that calls itself the Camel Club, is both feared and respected by those who've crossed his path. Keeping a vigilant watch over our leaders in Washington D.C., the Camel Club has won over some allies,
but it has also earned formidable enemies-including those in power who will do
anything to prevent Stone and his friends from uncovering the hidden, secret
work of the government.

Annabelle Conroy, an honorary member of the Camel Club, is also the greatest con artist of her generation. She has swindled forty million dollars from casino king Jerry Bagger, the man who murdered her mother. Now he's hot on her trail with only one goal in mind: Annabelle's death. But as Stone and the Camel Club circle the wagons to protect Annabelle, a new opponent, who makes Bagger's menace pale by comparison, suddenly arises.

One by one, men from Stone's shadowy past are turning up dead. Behind this slaughter stands one man: Harry Finn. To almost all who know him, Finn is a doting father and loving husband who uses his skills behind the scenes to keep our nation safe. But the other face of Harry Finn is that of an unstoppable killer who inevitably sets his lethal bull's-eye on Oliver Stone. And with Finn, Stone may well have met his match.

As Annabelle and the Camel Club fight for their lives, the twists and turns whipsaw, leading to a finale that is as explosive as it is shattering. And when buried secrets
are at last violently resurrected, the members of the Camel Club left standing
will be changed forever.

With unrelenting pacing, stunning reversals, and two of the most compelling characters in modern fiction, STONE COLD is David Baldacci writing at his breathtaking best.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The modern-day paladins of the Camel Club are back in their third exciting adventure (after 2006's The Collectors). Justice-seekers Milton, Caleb, Reuben and honorary member Alex Ford, a Secret Service agent, are led by feisty Oliver Stone, aka former CIA assassin John Carr. Their associate, Annabelle Conroy, is a slick con artist on the run after stealing $40 million from lunatic casino owner Jerry Bagger, who killed her mother. Oliver's CIA past distracts him from Annabelle's cause: his old unit, Triple 6, was responsible for the death of Raymond Solomon, branded a traitor during the Cold War, and now Solomon's son, DHS security expert Harry Finn, is picking off Triple 6 members. Oliver could be next if Carter Gray, his former boss, reveals that John Carr isn't really dead. Gripping, chilling and full of surprises, Baldacci's latest reveals the anarchy that lurks under the slick facade of corrupted governments. (Nov.)

Almost perfect addition to the Camel Club series
By J. Adams
I love this series about a group of hard luck misfits (named the Camel Club) in the nations capital who somehow came together to explore Washingtonian conspiracies. Mr Baldacci apparently has a wandering mind and let the group age for a time while he pursued another line of writing. Fans clamored for more of the august adventures of the Camel Club, the wait proved to be very worthwhile.
This one takes up where the last adventure left off and quickly slips into a higher gear. I couldn't put it down. Truly menacing bad guys, one of which turns out to be different than you had thought. A riveting roller coaster ride of high adventure and suspense.
I was going to say a lot more then realized that it might serve to spoil the book. I have read most of David Baldacci's books, this one rates as possibly the best.

This book Works!
By Q
I bought this book for myself because it's so funny, and my then-girlfriend took it and read it, and sure enough, we never got married! It has hilarious tips for staying single including: "get along GREAT with his mother." Another good one is "have an image problem" which includes this sample dialogue:
Her: Do you think my thighs are fat?
Him: No, I think your thighs are beautiful.
Her: Then you think fat is beautiful.
Him: Well, if you don't like your body, why don't you start working out?
Her: So you do think my thighs are fat!
Him: No, I think your thighs are beautiful.
Keep repeating this conversation until your relationship is over. (It won't take long.)

Funny, insightful behaviors that turn men off
By A Customer
Jenny takes us on an insightful journey with 101 female behaviors that "turn men off." Men can review these actions in terms of their current partner or check out future relationships before they become a problem.
For those romance, e-mail hopefuls, here is a way of checking out your correspondents in terms of misguided behaviors. For women, this guide is invaluable to the kinds of behaviors that men find disturbing. Men may be unaware that you wearing a bathing suit with a shirt makes them feel old, or feel too insecure to tell you that your intellect is scaring them away.
Easily read in about an hour, and this is where the fun begins. Now you have a handy reference to an important check list. It's time to share some of the insights and use the book as a catalyst for your own list and insights concerning relationships. The natural sequel to the book is what men do to stay alone or lose their women. Can we only think of 101?

A Mixture of Real Advice Disguised in Female Humor!
By Steve Nakamoto - Author of Talk Like A Winner - Men Are Like Fish - Dating Rocks - Wall Street Craps
Amongst men, they will say, "Chicks aren't funny." Well, here's a book that a lot of women will buy for the humor, but a good portion of the advice could be very helpful. This is one of the books that I used as a resource for my book. I believe that the biggest problem that most women have in dating is "spooking" men away early. And here's a book that tells women in a woman's voice what might trigger this. I particularly find things like #19 "Use baby talk in bed, #41 "Have a prejudice, #55 Talk about therapy, #69 "Overdress", and #89 "Don't laugh at his jokes," to be very good examples of "spooking." I think it's a fun read that would make for a good woman-to-woman joke, but there's real good relationship advice in here, but not properly contextualized. Bottom line: men get spooked easily....you only get a few chances at the big one.

Hilarious and helpful
By Amazonbombshell
Okay, I'm not a parent, let alone parent of a teenager...but I will be someday, and I'm interested, so I'm thinking about it and reading up. Here's what I'm thinking about this book:
I love it. It's wryly funny -- even occasionally hysterical -- and much of it rings true from watching my relatives bring up teenagers, being one not too long ago myself (though I didn't have some of the more extreme issues I notice in others), watching my own mom cope with me, and seeing the daily struggles between my peers and their moms when we were teens. There's a lot of "common sense" here, but don't let that statement fool you into thinking the book's useless; the best of us sometimes forget to exercise our "common" sense.
I particularly appreciate the ("common sense?") idea that moms should not fall into the trap of being "clueless" or the opposite trap of being your daughter's "cool" best friend. The best way to be both parent and friend is to be what Mrs. Borowitz calls "the uncool mom:" setting good boundaries, remaining in control, being yourself, picking your battles, and butting out when your daughter needs to manage on her own (which is more often than you think.) My own mother did a generally great job of this, and we are now what one might call "best friends" as adults -- still very much mother-daughter, but with mutual respect, friendship, and tolerance built out of (usually, and usually this was Mom's doing) handling our conflicts in a healthy way when I was a minor. This book is written by a mom who sounds a lot like mine...but even my mom could have learned something from her.

99% of this book is GREAT!
By Joanna Becker
I have a 13 year old daughter, and this book really resonated with me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I already fit in the "Uncool Mom" category, but I still learned a lot from the common sense tips. I also really enjoyed the way that this book is written, with humor and anecdotes that keep you in stitches while helping you understand your daughter just a little better.

My one problem with the book was when the author recommended not teaching abstinance. I do think that it's naive to ONLY teach abstinance, but I think teaching kids that abstinance is an option is very important. By not teaching abstinance at all, but teaching kids about safe sex, what they will hear is that they are expected to have pre-marital sex. When you teach abstinance AND safe sex in conjunction, you are telling them that if they don't want to, it's a valid choice and they should feel confident in it, and if they do choose to have sex, here's how to stay safe.

It's good, but...
By A Customer
Susan Borowitz offers practical wisdom and humorous tales regarding her and her own friends experiences with their adolescent girls. It's witty and very inciteful. I didn't agree with some of the advice from "parenting expert" Ava L. Siegler, in particular when she states "Forget teaching abstinence. It's wishful thinking and a waste of time!". I don't agree! It's never a waste of time to try to instill morals in your child's upbringing! The book does have value regarding how mothers should be (uncool) rather than "clueless" or "bestbuds" and offers good tips and strategies in dealing with adolence.

From Publishers Weekly
Larger-than-life characters and a scenic setting add color to Welfonder's 14th-century romance, but the story's lack of historical detail will ultimately frustrate readers. Since her husband's death, Lady Caterine Keith has been forced to stand by as greedy Englishmen threaten her Scottish stronghold. To protect the castle from a royal edict, Caterine's sister, Linnet (the heroine of Welfonder's first novel, Devil in a Kilt), sends Caterine a prospective husband of the highest virtue-Sir Marmaduke Strongbow. Caterine grudgingly marries the scarred, English-born knight but refuses to offer him her heart because she was once raped by English soldiers and now hates any man with English blood. Marmaduke, however, fears Caterine really resists because of his appearance. Although Caterine's opposition to Marmaduke feels contrived, Welfonder pens some steamy scenes in which the two first use sex to bridge their differences and then continue giving into desire while the differences remain. In the end... readers will be left wondering how love finally prevailed and why it took so long.

The Knight wants it all
By Fantasy Hunter
Lady Keith needs a STRONG MAN to hold back a threat. The Knight wants a woman to love him as he is: scarred, English, and passionate. In her sister's vision, the answer is for Strongbow to assist Lady Keith by a make believe wedding. However, Strongbow will settle only for a real marriage and the enemy forces Lady Keith into a real marriage. Both character are worldly. There are no childish games. The beast persues the bride by necessity while securing down the lands and guardianship of the lands. Strongbow is honorable, knightly, worldly, intelligent, honest, and loyal. I wanted him to find happiness. But, is this the woman worthy to be his?
I enjoyed the story. Ive read other Wellfonder books with the Strongbow character. Because I like the character, I wanted to know him better and wanted him to find happiness. This book achieved both.

Finally! The sequel to "Devil In A Kilt!" Sir Marmaduke Strongbow's story....
By Sassafras
This is by far my favorite Welfonder novel. I fell in love with Sir Marmaduke Strongbow in "Devil in a Kilt." Sir Marmaduke is a horribly scarred, disfigured warrior with a beautiful heart longing to love again. Lady Caterine Keith, Linnet's sister btw, is a twice-widowed lady in need of a champion. Linnet and Duncan put her plight before Sir Marmaduke, and he cannot refuse to ride to her aid. Unknown to him, Lady Caterine hates Englishmen...and he is an Englishman...a dastardly Sassenach. Though English by birth, his heart beats for Scotland, and he determines he will slay the "dragons" in his lady's heart one by one and win her for himself. This is a beautiful story for a true hero with a beautiful heart. This is one that I couldn't put down after beginning to read it.

Medieval romance at its best!
By Faith V. Smith
Lady Caterine Keith is sick and tired of husbands who die on her. She vows to never wed again--tis too hard on her heart. She just wants to be left alone but her wishes are for naught when Sir Hugh de la Hogue courts her. His threats to go to the king if she refuses his suit are of no consequence to her. She will not share her bed with him or anyone else. The suggestion that she ask her sister for a champion reaches her ears; but she will not yield to the pleas to take a third husband even in name only.
Lord Marmaduke Strongbow has spent most of his warrior life fighting battles for Scotland and fighting off women. He has loved and lost but is not willing to give up on his dream of lasting love until an accident mars his face. He is disfigured but the mutilation of his flesh takes second place to the scarring of his soul. How can he ask a woman to become his wife when he has nothing to offer her? His future is a bleak hole of uncertainty until the wife of his best friend requests a favor of him to become her sister's champion.
Ms. Welfonder excels in her third medieval romance. The battle lines are set and then crossed as both Caterine and Sir Marmaduke fight enemies as well as their hearts. The addition of previous characters from Devil In A Kilt, a wee dog with a heart of a lion and secondary characters that have a story of their own, kept me entertained. As a book reviewer for two romance magazines, I am anxiously awaiting Sue-Ellen's fourth book. With three compelling reads, including Knight In My Bed, under her belt, I am holding my breath to see how she mesmerizes her readers next.

Shelly Browning returns to college at age 26 after a disastrous divorce. Grant, a former high school teacher whom she had a crush on, is her professor. Torn between her recent divorce and resulting mistrust of men, Shelly sends mixed signals to Grant. Male and female voice changes are excellent, particularly the charac-terization of Shelly as a high school student. Soft romantic music provides musical breaks and story emphasis. Narrator Karen Ziemba depicts this classic love story in clear bell-like tones, changing to a hot, throaty contralto to enhance explicit sex scenes. Building passion fast-forwards the tension to the final detailed lovemaking scene. G.D.W. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Another one that should have stayed in the archives
By Tracy Vest
Shelley is a divorcee who has recently returned to college to finish the degree she abandoned just before getting married. Her professor is none other than Grant Chapman, the high school teacher with whom she shared a tantalizing kiss 10 years earlier when he taught civics.

Grant left school immediately following that illicit afternoon kiss, and took a job as a congressional aide. He leaves that job due to another potential scandal. He is once again attracted to Shelley, and since she is no longer underage (thus off limits), he asks her out. In order to find happiness the two must overcome many obstacles including former lovers and a dean that is suspicious of Grant's motivations.

The story is dated, the conflict nearly non-existent, and the dialog a little trite at times. Recommended reading only for anyone who had a crush on a teacher.

Serves as a remembrance to Brown's powerful romance
By Desmond Chan
It is so often that readers now not only judge a book by its cover and tantamount to it is the value for price. Sandra Brown's latest hardcover A KISS REMEMBERED billed as a classic love story should be released into a paperback given that it is firstly too short and ungratifying in terms of price against quality and secondly a dated re-release of her work when she writes under the pseudonym of Erin St. Clare.
Not that the story itself is insipid. Sandra Brown is a master at crafting moral dilemmas and poignant romance. This time round she weaves a student-teacher romance between Shelley Browning and Grant Chapman. Once at Poshman Valley High when Shelley was a budding student worshipping the devastatingly handsome political science teacher Mr. Chapman until a shocking yet pleasantly intimate kiss fuelled their desire. Confusion propels Shelley to distance herself and run straight into the arms of Daryl Robins, who later she discovered was a erroneous choice for a husband with his selfishness. Grant moved on to the political stage as a senatorial aide but later a scandal exploded to revert him to teaching yet again.
When they meet again it is at a church-sponsored university where Shelley studies as an undergraduate and Grant as the professor. A wiser and matured Shelley finds her grappling with the primal attraction to Grant, yet again public opinion and objections from the school chancellor threatens their rekindle of romance. When love comes heading, Shelley is forced to evaluate her option and apprehend her fears in love. Most importantly of all, she has to learn to trust Grant....
The awkward relationship under Ms. Brown comes maturedly handled without eager prurience - and it is all the more miraculous she can explore and develop their passion within 180 pages. The hardship and hurdles to surmount manifest as ostracization, gossips that threatens Grant's career, political scandals and Shelley's selfish ex-husband. It makes their precarious May-December romance all the more rewarding and triumphant. The love scenes are uniquely Brown's passionate prose and they sizzle. However, it is ultimately Ms. Brown's high-voltage emotional drama that renders her one of the most profilic author today and also one romance writer who is fondly remembered for her optimistic and uplifting romance.

Dated but interesting story
By Tracy Vest
Ten years after a smoldering kiss from her civics teacher, Shelley finds herself back in his classroom, college classroom that is. Recently divorced from the husband she nurtured and put through medical school, Shelley is starting over.

Also starting over is Grant Chapman, former high school civics teacher cum congressional aide, now college civics professor. He is trying to live down a Washington DC scandal involving the daughter of a senator. The last thing he needs in his life is the now grown up teenager that sent him running from Oklahoma to the nation's capital after a fateful kiss.

The passion they felt ten years earlier but never acted on is rampant, and Grant attempts to seduce her until she will finally give in to him. Despite trying to stay away from each other, they cannot. They have a lot of obstacles thrown in along the way including more scandals, the college chancellor, and a host of old lovers.

The material is really dated, but if you read the preface going in, you would know that. Yes, Grant had a hard time saying no, but back when this was written, it was still okay to slap women around in movies, so you can forgive the timing.

Despite the "datedness," it is a compelling romance, which has you rooting for he charismatic leads right until the end. This is a short one - less than 200 pages, and can be read in a single day. It is a nice escapist story

The cover of The Best 100 Poems of All Time promises "[v]erses to move you, lines you'll love, from old favorites to modern classics...," and while they may not live up to the title's hyperbole, they do satisfy the teaser's terms. Though the collection, including poems by Homer, Sappho, Virgil, Dante, Chaucer, Villon, Shakespeare, Schiller, Issa, Whitman, Baudelaire, Millay, Cullen, Neruda, Plath and Angelou, was edited by Leslie Pockell, the unsigned introduction was written by an editorial "we," who proclaim that "this present collection has as much credibility as many other lists of the best and the greatest that have circulated during the recent turn of the century." One hopes that the actual poems contained herein have more credibility than any list.

Handy little collection
By Dennis Littrell
What this little book might have been called in manuscript was something like "100 Representative Poems of 100 of the Most Popular Poets of All Time." Not a bad title, and it is consistent with editor Leslie Pockell's popular choices and her[?] intent to include no more than one poem by any poet. But the unmitigated gall of the title actually chosen--The 100 Best Poems of All Time--makes for a little fun, and probably will increase the sales of the book. As Pockell writes in the short Introduction, "Well, at least we attracted your attention."
You did. And for fun I am responding with some reaction to the selections. But first I should mention Pockell's criteria for the selections. The book needed to be short, a mix of "high art" and "popular culture" was desired, and the selections ought to be "inclined toward poetry that is best appreciated when recited or read aloud." Fair enough. And for the most part I think Pockell did an admirable job.
The excellent choices include, the King James version of the Twenty-Third Psalm, Poe's "The Raven," Shakespeare's "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" (although it seems weird to select just one of his sonnets; I prefer "That time of year thou mayst in me behold" or "Let me not to the marriage of true minds"), Donne's "Go and Catch a Falling Star," Shelley's "Ozymandias," Keat's "Ode on a Grecian Urn" (although again, how to choose just one!) Matthew Arnold's "Dover Beach," Housman's "When I Was One-and-Twenty," Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," (ditto the last two asides), Eliot's "...Prufrock," etc.
Poor selections include, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" (a stirring song, but a "best" poem?), Basho's "An Old Pond" (there are better English renditions than the one given, for example, "In the old stone pool/a frogjump:/splishhhh." Pockell gives, "Old pond-/A frog leaps in-/Water's sound."; and Basho wrote many better haiku), "Casey at the Bat" (uh...never mind), and several others that I fear to name. Also to choose out of all of Alexander Pope's work, his epigram about the dog at Kew, seems almost anti-poetic.
A howler is "Ancient Music" by Ezra Pound. If Pockell wanted to show the less than charming side of Pound, perhaps Pound's "The Garden" which includes the line, "...the filthy, sturdy, unkillable infants of the very poor" might have been presented. (Then again, perhaps not.)
A creative choice is e e cummings's "Buffalo Bill's," which reflects not only cummings's love of typographical form, but his playful wit along with his famous word play and his often missed irony. (The typographical form of the poem represents a tomahawk: "[H]ow...[DO] you like your blueeyed boy[,] Mister Death"?)
Langston Hughes's "Harlem" ("What happens to a dream deferred?") is obviously a politically correct choice, and also a very good little poem, but I would have preferred his "Mother to Son" ("Well, son, I'll tell you:/Life for me ain't been no crystal stair...") or the breath-taking simplicity of "Friend." Sylvia Plath's dark and brutal "Daddy" is also PC, but with its inclusion there is no need for Margaret Atwood, a fact for which we can be thankful. The choice from Sappho, with its nice turn from "a god" that sits "beside you" to the poet herself, is of course de rigueur, but a good choice nonetheless.
Pleasant surprises include W. H. Auden's "Funeral Blues," and Pablo Neruda's "Poetry." Some old favorites are Matthew Arnold's "Dover Beach," Wordsworth's "The World Is Too Much with Us," and the powerful "Incident" from Countee Cullen.
It is good that Pockell includes some poetry translated from other languages; however that just makes the presumption of her title all the more absurd. Just how would one presume to pick the best from such an incredible array? However, the choices made really are very good although they reflect the artistry of the translator nearly as much as the original poet. Middle Eastern people might object to the choice of a quatrain from "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" ("The Moving Finger writes...") translated by Edward FitzGerald, which is almost as much English as it is Persian, preferring a more ethnic rendition.
I can't quibble with the poets left out, although missing are John Crow Ransom, Archibald MacLeish, Theodore Roethke, Gwendolyn Brooks, Robert Lowell, Rita Dove, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and of course of necessity many others. One of my favorite poems and poet not to appear is "Patterns" by Amy Lowell.
Pockell gives a terse, but felicitous introduction to each poem usually including a word about the poet. But I have one question, who is Leslie Pockell? There is not a biographical word anywhere in the book to give a hint. And should I have used a masculine or a feminine pronoun?

100 Best?
By Paul Fitzhamon
I disagree with the assumption that they are 100 of the best poems ever written but they are certainly worthy of review. I found the selection interesting.

a great collection of poetry
By Irene
This book is wonderful! I'm a student, that loves literature and poetry, so I decided to buy this at my local bookstore. I like to collect poetry collections, and this one seemed perfect. As soon as I read the first few poems, I fell in love with it.
Several of my favorite poems are in this book, such as "The Highwayman" by Alred Noyes, "The raven" by Edgar Allan Poe, "Still I rise" by Maya Angelou and also "Lake Isle of Innisfree" by William Butler Yeats. This delightful collection also had my Fifth Grade favorite- "Paul Revere's Ride" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I was thrilled.
I also found many new soon-to-be favorites such as "Tyger!Tyger!" by William Blake and "First Fig" by Edna St. Vincent Mallay.

I was a little annoyed when someone who reviewed this book said that it didn't say when it was jsut part of a poem. It does- It says "From" before the title of thepoem, to subtly let the reader know that it's not the whole thing. The reviewer must not have have read this book carefully, if he/she did not catch it.

I would reccommend this book to any lovers of poetry, or even first-timers. It's extra-helpful because of the index of both titles and authors, and also the first line of the poem! It really is a wonderful collection.
