Bird Watching: On Playing and Coaching the Game I Love, by Larry Bird, Jackie MacMullan

Larry Bird captured the imagination and admiration of basketball fans throughout his thirteen-year career with the Boston Celtics with his trademark style of creative, intelligent, exciting, and hard-nosed play. And then, last year in his rookie season as head coach of the Indiana Pacers, he infused the team with these same qualities -- and the results were remarkable. He turned around a slumping franchise and led the Pacers to the conference finals. To finish off a great season, Bird was named the NBA's "Coach of the Year" -- quite an accolade for Bird, who had never coached before and surprised many fans with his unusual and unorthodox coaching methods.

This book is a look into one of the greatest minds to have ever stepped on a hardwood court. Larry Bird shares his inner thoughts on basketball that to date only his Celtic teammates and Pacers players have been privy. From dissecting offensive and defensive strategies to assessing the talent of NBA players; from sharing the genesis of his coaching philosophies to how he deals with today's overpriced and temperamental players, it's all there. This book is Larry Bird's basketball playbook, and it's the one book every basketball fan will want to read.

Amazon.com Review
The first sentence of Larry Bird's candid post-player memoir begins blandly enough: "On August 18, 1992, I announced my retirement from the Boston Celtics." It's the one that follows--"It was one of the happiest days of my life"--that sets the tone for the book. Most stars have to be pulled off center stage, but as Bird Watching makes clear, the former Celtic legend who returned home to eventually coach the Indiana Pacers is certainly a rare bird. He's not afraid to ruffle feathers. And he's not afraid to tell his truth.

Perhaps the most striking revelations concern his heart. On top of the back pain that plagued him through much of his career, from time to time Bird experienced the feeling--and disorienting flush--of an irregular heartbeat, which he kept hidden from the Celtics. Even now, in the stress-filled world of coaching, Bird has almost passed out on the bench a couple of times--but he remains a fierce competitor. "I'm not going to be stupid about this heart condition, but I'm not going to live my whole life in fear of this thing either. If it goes, it goes."

Bird Watchingspends virtually no time with Bird the player; he's not one for looking back. He's more interested in explaining his evolution and thinking as a coach, examining the current state of the NBA, and picking apart the Pacer's disastrous 1999 playoff loss to the Knicks. He does, however, reminisce about his amazing connection to Magic Johnson, comparing it to the bond between Ali and Frazier. "I knew it was going to be like that forever after I played him in college for the national championship," Bird writes. "I never came up against anyone, other than Magic, who could challenge me mentally. Magic always took me to the limit." From Bird, it's hard to imagine a more heartfelt compliment. --Jeff Silverman

From Publishers Weekly
Fans expecting the literary highlight reel of the NBA legend's championship years with the Boston Celtics may be initially put off by this loosely organized collection of opinions and reminiscences. They should stick with it, however, because ultimately the book is an endearingly honest self-portrait of a humble man who has made the most of his opportunities. Celtic fans will be titillated by the frank reports of just how Larry Legend wound up leaving Boston. Being a give-it-to-me-straight kind of guy, he was disgusted with the disingenuous ways of the Celtic front office, where he briefly worked after his playing days. Bird, now the head coach of the Indiana Pacers, also explains, quite briskly, how his relationship with fellow Celtic Kevin McHale went sour: as their careers wound down, McHale and another teammate went behind Bird's back to reporters with complaints that his play had become selfish. But Bird's refusal to pull punches doesn't hit only his adversaries: he admits that he was lucky that his good friend Rick Robey was traded away from the Celtics, because the good times they had together got in the way of Bird's career. He also writes that not he, but Jerry Sloan of the Utah Jazz should have been named Coach of the Year in 1998. The Hick from French Lick solidifies his reputation as a straight-talker unimpressed with his own legend. (Sept.)

From Library Journal
This intelligently written collaboration covers the second act in Bird's life. Drive, his 1989 autobiography (written with Bob Ryan), covered the first actAhis early life and his career as a basketball player. The second act opens when a debilitating congenital back condition forced Bird's 1992 retirement as an NBA player, a retirement he postponed so that he could participate in the 1992 Olympics as a member of the U.S. Dream Team. Any sports fan can tell you what happened next: surgery, recovery, the job as head coach of the Indiana Pacers, being named NBA Coach of the Year at the end of his rookie year, and induction into the NBA Hall of Fame. These recent events have launched an avalanche of Bird biographies. Libraries that need a comprehensive biography of Bird may wish to choose one of the other recent titles. However, for libraries that already have a good Bird biography, Bird's insightful observations on other NBA participants make Bird Watching an excellent addition to most sports collections.

Horrendous...
By Rooster52
As a huge Larry Bird fan prior to listening to the first half of this audiobook (until I couldn't take anymore), this was very disappointing. If you're interested in hearing Bird humblebrag about how tough he is by spending hours hearing him describe his back problems in excruciating detail, then Bird Watching is for you. If I had a do-over, I would save my time and money. Bird comes across as an arrogant, self absorbed and boring storyteller.

Bird Watching - Larry Bird

Bird Watching (by Larry Bird)
Reviewer: Known as one the of the best basketball players to have ever stepped foot onto a NBA court, Larry Bird's book will teach you many things about himself as well as the game. Larry brings the reader into some of his most personal things that he has never shared with anyone. He gives you a first class view on all of his experiences of playing professional basketball in the NBA. He shows you the downsides, positives, but most of all the victories. You'll find out first hand all of the injuries Larry has encountered that until now he has kept as a secret.
Through this book Larry will share with you information of his hometown, French Lick, Indiana. You'll learn about his family, about his fathers' death and the way up to his mothers' death. Larry talks about more than just his parents he introduces you to his wife, Dinah and his two children, Conner and Mariah.
Larry will walk you through his entire career. All the way from his high school career, where one of his favorite coaches, Jim Jones coached him. Jim Jones was the coach who really taught Larry all of the fundamentals of the game. Larry didn't seem to have that many coaches that he didn't care for. Larry is also a very hard worker, he really appreciated it when coaches made him run hard. He believed that every basketball player should be conditioned to play the game. Then later on in his career when he ends up becoming a coach he incorporates all of the coaching skills that he has gathered from his previous coaches and uses them on his players. He brings you through some of his most exciting journeys and some of his most famous friends and players.
Just about everything in this book flows together. Larry explains everything that you know about him and a lot of things that you have no idea of. The only thing that I disliked about the book is that none of it was put in order from the beginning of his life to the end of his career, it seemed to jump around a lot. Another big thing was that each chapter was long in itself, but it seemed to talk about the same thing and just ramble on and on. For example one of Larry's biggest problems was his back and he talked about it for a whole chapter then he talked about it more in a few different chapters. Although there some very good and interesting chapters in the book that taught me many things about Larry Bird.
Overall I thought the book was very good, but somewhat long for me, but if you read often then it will be just fine. I would recommend this to anyone who has a great liking of either Larry Bird or basketball. You also need to have a pretty good understanding of basketball to be able to understand some of the topics Larry teaches you.

Bird Watching: On Playing and Coaching the Game I Love
By Kyle
Bird Watching, an autobiography by Larry Bird, is a story for any lover of sports. Bird Watching is a detailed account of the life of Larry Bird, from his NBA career with the Boston Celtics to his coaching position with the Indiana Pacers. After reading the first page of the book, the reader realizes there is more to this NBA legend than meets the eye.
Unlike most professional basketball players, Larry Bird never regretted the day he left the NBA and even says that the day he retired was "one of the happiest days of [his] life." Faced with chronic back problems and an irregular heart, Bird was happy to see the day when he no longer had to endure the pain of playing the sport he loved more than anything. Coming from the man himself, the story describes Bird's life in a detailed and personal manner. From beginning to end, the reader easily notices the uniqueness of this man's character and not only sees, but feels the impact this incredible man left on so many fellow players, fans, and loved ones.
I thought this was a great book, especially for a sports fan. I felt that for a sport's book, it was particularly well written. The author's style allows the reader to get a personal glimpse of the life of Larry Bird and causes the reader to feel as if they knew this NBA legend. Because of the story's subject, the author employs very few literary devices. However, the author uses many similes in describing Bird's injuries, allowing the reader to appreciate Bird's choice in leaving the NBA. The book lacks an overall dominant theme, but simply wishes to convey the story of one of the greatest and most unique basketball players of all time.

From Publishers Weekly
Sparks (A Bend in the Road, etc.) logs more miles on the winding high road of romance with the story of two middle-aged people who meet by chance in the small North Carolina coastal town of Rodanthe. The impassioned but doomed romance seems to owe much to Robert James Waller's The Bridges of Madison County. Once again, a housewife who has focused on everyone but herself indulges in a brief, intense, secret affair with a stranger who changes her life forever. As the story begins, Adrienne Willis is 60, the divorced mother of three grown children. To help her troubled daughter cope with the untimely recent death of her husband, Adrienne tells her the tale of her love affair, which took place 15 years before. At the time, Adrienne was an uptight matron whose ex-husband had just left her for a younger woman. This rejection colors her entire life, and Sparks realistically portrays a vulnerable and isolated woman who throws herself into raising her children to escape her despair. Paul Flanner, her paramour, is a surgeon and an obsessive workaholic with no genuine connection to his wife or son, whose world completely falls apart when one of his patients inexplicably dies. Sparks builds a taut, plausible relationship between his protagonists, but even fans may be irked by the obviousness of their story and the inevitability of their fate.

From Booklist
Sparks, popular author of several romantically themed best-sellers, including Message in a Bottle (1998), is back at it with his latest mix of love story and pathos. He doesn't disappoint, whipping up plenty of melodrama in the story of two shattered people, both badly scarred by past experiences, who find each other late in life and realize they are soul mates. Adrienne Willis is a 45-year-old mother of three whose husband recently abandoned her for a younger woman. When she visits the small coastal town of Rodanthe, North Carolina, seeking a bit of respite from her problems, she meets Paul Flanner, a 54-year-old doctor who has sold his thriving medical practice and come to Rodanthe to escape his own tortured past. Despite their short courtship, the two find themselves falling madly and passionately in love and vow to spend their lives together. Unfortunately, Paul needs to make amends with the son he has long neglected and so embarks on an ill-fated trip, which leads to heartbreak. Sparks has a very solid fan base, and they will be clamoring for his latest. Kathleen Hughes

Loved This Book!!
By Holly Flora
Nights In Rodanthe is the story of two people coming together and falling in love when they lest expect it. Adrienne Willis is left to raise her three kids after her husband ran off with a younger woman and with a need to collect her thoughts, she goes to Rodanthe to tend to her friend's inn for the weekend unaware of what is to come. Paul Flanner was a highly successful doctor who is running from his past and trying to regain what he lost with his grown son. A trip to Rodanthe for Paul would mean a start to a new beginning with his son but at the same time, a certain woman will come into his life when it's most needed.

One weekend is all it takes for Adrienne and Paul, to fall deeply in love but with Paul set to fly down to South America for a year to be with his son, Paul is willing to give that up to be with Adrienne but comes to realization that he needs to be with his son more. With a sad goodbye and with it now been fifteen years since that weekend, Adrienne finally tells her daughter, Amanda what happened that weekend. As Amanda is dealing with a heartbreaking loss of her husband and having to raise two young boys by herself, the story of her mother and Paul will make her want to do more for her boys and realizes what her mother went through so many years ago. We are left with Adrienne reflecting on what happened that weekend and what happened with her and Paul afterward, we realize that all it takes is one look from someone to find your one true soul mate.

I have to be honest here and say that, this isn't my first time reading this book but it will be the first time reviewing it, yes people, it's that good of a book for me to have read and reread this book multiple times just to read Adrienne and Paul's story! Just reading how their lives collided on that beach in Rodanthe for the weekend and how they fell in love and what happened after, will have you crying a bit in the end of the book for them. When the movie came out, it was exactly like I thought it would be and it does make you think that love is possible even when you lest expect it!

Thank You to Nicholas Sparks for writing a story that you can reread over and over and not get bored with it!

Loved this!

Another touching story from the Master of Love and Tragedy.

As the story begins, Adrienne Willis is 60, the divorced mother of three grown children. To help her troubled daughter cope with the untimely recent death of her husband, Adrienne decides to tell her grown daughter an intimate story of her own love affair, which took place 15 years before.

The story of this love affair begins many years after Adrienne is left by her own husband (her daughters father) for a younger woman. Even 'though many years have gone by, Adrienne still lacks confidence and is introverted and unhappy. Her depression about this encouraged her to get away for a weekend to "house-sit" for a close friend of hers who owns a Bed and Breakfast in Rodanthe, North Carolina and needed someone to "mind the store" while she is away. Rodanthe is a small coastal town where she feels she can seek a bit of respite from her problems while she minds the Inn. The only guest scheduled to arrive this stormy weekend is Paul Flanner, a doctor who has sold his thriving medical practice and come to Rodanthe to deal with a former patients spouse, who blames him for his wifes death. As Paul arrives, a big storm is right behind him, and expected to get fierce over the weekend, so the two of them work together to ready the old house and in the process get acquainted.
With just the two of them together during the stormy weekend, Adrienne surprises herself and finds it easy to open up to Paul, and he with her. They both feel a connection from the onset. Two wounded people turn to each other for comfort and in one weekend, set in motion feelings that will resonate throughout the rest of their lives.

Despite their short courtship, the two find themselves falling passionately in love and vow to spend their lives together. Before that can happen, Paul needs to make amends with the son he has long neglected and so embarks on an ill-fated trip to Ecuador, which leads to unexpected and untimely events that alter Adrienne's life permanently. A very moving tale of love and tragedy, in the all encompassing Sparks style.

A fast engrossing read, it is a small book, so in two sittings I was done, and I would have liked more.

No surprise
By Steve Marson
I read the following novels written by Nicholas Sparks in this order: THE NOTEBOOK, MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE, A WALK TO REMEMBER, THE RESCUE, BEND IN THE ROAD and finally NIGHTS IN RODANTHE. My favorite is BEND IN THE ROAD. I suspect that I like BEND IN THE ROAD the best because it is the least predictable. Like most of his novels, NIGHTS IN RODANTHE is highly predictable. Regardless of its predictability, I enjoyed reading it.
I am sure that those who have read his other novels will respond in the same manner as I did. However, I don't think that people read Sparks to experience a surprise. Sparks is a master of the English language and through his talent of constructing a sentence, he can induce a person to continue to read. Sparks has the rare talent to draw a picture with words. Characters come alive and make a connection with the reader.
The connection to real life that makes NIGHTS IN RODANTHE particularly compelling is the emergence of relationship triangles. I related to at least four relationship triangles. One of the three people has to make a decision reminiscent of Rick's final decision in the film CASABLANCA. To follow a path that fulfill one's emotional needs or to follow a path that is less altruistic but clearly more noble? Should a parent address the loneliness in one's life or focus on the needs of one's children? "That is the question." In real life as in the book, one cannot have it all. Like Rick in CASABLANCA and Paul in NIGHTS IN RODANTHE, only one decision can be made. Once the decision is made, there is no turning back.
The elegance of NIGHTS IN RODANTHE is the author's ability to capture the feelings of making a critical decision and placing these feelings in the heart of the reader who vicariously identifies with the relationship triangle.

Lucien St. Aubyn and Elizabeth Montclair hate each other-well, perhaps not hate, but something akin to a strong loathing. Lucien sees Elizabeth as the biggest snob who ever danced upon Society's floors. She is proud, arrogant, the epitome of everything he despises-and the only woman who has ever resisted his charms. He devises a plan to seduce her, only to have it backfire.

Elizabeth feels that Lucien might well be the Anti-Christ. Suspected of killing his brother for the ducal title and known for charming every woman he meets out of her skirts, Elizabeth only sees Lucien for the degenerate and rake that he is and would rather cut off her limbs than to have anything to do with such a hateful man. When the two are caught alone by a woman who wastes no time in telling Elizabeth's mother, Elizabeth's worse fear comes true-she must marry a rake.

Though Britton's newest Regency-era romp (following Enchanted by Your Kisses) doesn't begin with the words "Once upon a time," it has a fairy-tale quality that will easily disarm readers. The book's unlikely Prince Charming is Lucien St. Aubyn, who's been dubbed the Duke of Death and the Rake of Ravenwood-the former because people close to him tend to die (including his father and brother) and the latter because he enjoys debauching innocent young women. The one woman he can't seem to seduce is Elizabeth Montclair, the lowborn daughter of a cobbler-turned-earl. Elizabeth loathes Lucien, but when they're caught together without a chaperone, she's forced to marry him to save her reputation. The marriage of convenience is an overused historical romance device, but Britton's plucky characters keep the story fresh with their comic repartee and sensual battle of wills. Unfortunately, the novel takes an improbable turn when Lucien is charged with the murder of his older brother. This twist allows the protagonists to resolve their trust issues, but it also makes for an overly dramatic (albeit suspenseful) finale. Still, this delightful tale outshines many romances of its ilk, and the protagonists' spry wit and comic antics will have readers on the floor in stitches.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Lucien St. Aubyn, known as "The Duke of Death" because nearly everyone associated with him, including his brother, meets an untimely demise, is consumed by guilt. To conceal his despair, he becomes London's most notorious rake. Meanwhile, prospects for a husband look grim for Elizabeth Montclair, who is a member of the nobility only because crazy King George made her cobbler grandfather an earl in tribute to his well-crafted shoes. When Elizabeth is caught being cornered by Lucien, the ton considers her compromised, but much to everyone's surprise Lucien proposes marriage. Elizabeth eventually realizes that Lucien's licentious behavior is just a facade, but happily-ever-after isn't in the cards: charges are brought against Lucien for the murder of his brother, and the penalty is death. It isn't easy to write a tale that makes the reader laugh and cry, but Britton succeeds, thanks to her great characters: a hero who's a much better man than society (or he) believes, a brave heroine who falls in love against her will, and memorable servants and villains. A romance of self-acceptance, suspense, and humor, this book will be a hit with fans of Amanda Quick, Lisa Kleypas, and Karen Robards. Shelley Mosley

An interesting read but the title is misleading
By J. Mullally
This was not a bad book, though I found the humor and the parenthetical sentences, and the authorial stance with the whole first chapter introducing the hero and heroine in a very laboured manner, very off putting.
The main problem with the book is that Elizabeth is never seduced at all. A couple of moderately warm scenes and 'a first time together scene' worthy of only the worst in 'romance' are totally forgettable. Tying up virgins and abandoning them without a word of explanation is really not the way to their heart. There isn't enough heat between them to sustain these scenes. A romance is the hero and heroine falling in love, not arguing continually and talking about nothing but sex (which they never do!)
Lucien is also completely inconsistent at times and there are big gaps in the story re the pirates and the death of his brother. Our heroine is a worthy match for him, but Elizabeth is apt to be far too changeable at times.
The comedy is clever and witty one minute, downright vulgar the next. This would have been a much better book without it on the whole; after what Lucien has been through the brooding hero in the ruined castle is more consistent than the man who decides to ruin her reputation at a ball because he is bored, and ends up having to marry her to save both their reputations. Witty repartee is one thing, challenges to seduce the servants (which she does go through with) and detailed descriptions of male anatomy quite another. not to mention deliberately embarrassing each other in public all the time because they have so little respect for one another, especially at their own wedding.
The whole of the book is littered with grammar and punctuation errors, making the whole seem even more slap dash. Ms. Britton writes with verve but she loses sight of what she is writing and the style and tone swings are far too glaring to make this a smooth easy read. She has some interesting and sexy characters and does not need to try so hard to make them so with feathers and powdered sugar and bananas. It just doesn't work. And has been done far better elsewhere, lots of times before.
One final point-most of the action takes place over 2 days on their honeymoon-all of her anguish and love is just not believable given the extent to which she and he hardly know each other.
Having said that I really like Lucien despite the flaws in the writing and his character, though the whole is he a rake or not was really not handled very well or clearly at all. I would love to have seen some real intimacy between them in the epilogue. On the whole, an entertaining read, but I hope the next book will be a lot better.

I love you, I hate you-romance which gets a bit tiresome
By A Customer
The story actually has a very promising beginning: Headstrong beauty with plans to marry only for love meets dangerous rogue, rumoured to have shot his heir for a dukedom. They dislike each other passionately at first sight. Yet because of a compromising situation the duke is forced to marry Elizabeth. She refuses to bed him, though and of course the duke rises to the challenge and tries to seduce her. Quite conventional and somewhat hackneyed but I admit I love that plot!
Elizabeth make a compelling heroine with enough spine and flaws to make her interesting. Lucien is the classic bad boy, but not of the unredeemable sort. He's never abusive to Elizabeth or too manipulative.
However the couple (at least for my taste) needs much too long to get closer together and to develop sweeter feelings beyond mere sexual attraction and an initial, reluctant infatuation. After such a long time of patient waiting for some romantic and loving interaction (It's supposed to be a romance after all!) their first actual intimate encounter was quite disappointing for me, too loveless, violent and frantic to make up for the lack of romantic interaction. Instead of armorous talk the hero even curses the heroine in between (the most unrealistic deflowering scene I ever read-even considering that it takes place in a romance which are per se unrealistic in that respect!)
And even after that unromantic coupling there's not much sweet and romantic love to be found to make up for it and the end is somewhat rushed.
Only worth your time if you love bickering couples who are at cross purpose most of the time, with a tortured hero constantly distrusting his feelings, compulsively trying to avoid emotional and physical intimacy with the heroine most of the time .
It might be a good romance for people who love angsty romances but after my high expectations at the beginning it was a letdown for me.

starts off well, then...
By A Customer
Lucien St. Aubyn is called the Duke of Death because so many of his relatives and friends have died. Most recently his brother was killed by Lucien's own bullet.
Elizabeth Montclair is the daughter of an Earl who has very recent connections to trade and is barely tolerated by the ton.
One night at a party Lucien compromises Elizabeth and he does the honorable thing and offers for her. Will they live happily ever after when they say they don't want each other and Lucien still has his brother's death hanging over his head?
I found the beginning of this book very entertaining. I loved the push and pull between the characters. The end lost me completely. I found myself skimming pages just to see how it ended.
I would not recommend this book.

Best for Corporate Consultants aiming for 100Gs
By Theoni Lussos
There are some very good tips in this book. That said you can find a lot of them else like the Edwards book i.e. Home Businesses for the 1990's or the 21st Century. The real nugget is her Top Ten Jobs for the 21st Century are all very corporate oriented i.e. you could use none of them for home businesses which is odd as her self-inventory on page 16 is geared towards using Hobbies, Skills and Talents to create a career. I was a corporate consultant for most of my business career and I would say that her list of what makes a successful one is correct: fill a niche, solve hard problems, fill a wish, interpret new regulations or technology and finally going into the right growth area; not all industries are created equal.

But then Ms Cheney fails as she doesn't go into is the problems of politics and the traps therein and feels that "education" and hard dipolma's will solve most of your problems. I didn't see that but then I don't have an MBA so perhaps my experience is outside of her box. That said I found that the book was a rather hopeful view of what consulting is about and her 10 tops consulting jobs a hit and miss in today's outsourcing world i.e. Employee Training, while the others a mix of MBA jobs (Market Research) and Technology (here's my own, Systems Designer) but she is right on the income, costs and downsides.

She does give some good website to do further and more current research the obvious choice of the Census but also some not gov'tal websites like e [...] by Rhonda Abrams. You have to be careful here as many of the domains that she lists are gone. So overall it's a mixed bag. If you know nothing she does go into the business, legal and tax issues of such a job. If you are in the field it's pretty much useless.

best of the animal prince books
By B. Proczko
I developed a huge crush on Harry, envisioning someone like Clive Owen powering through the pages. Good mystery, great sex, interesting switches in perspective throughout. SPOILER ALERT: only two points I disliked were first the abrupt jump to a greusome murder right after the first sex scene, major buzzkill. Poor editing choice. Second was that while rushed wedding climaxes are an endurable cliche, quick and dirty sex in the vestry is really not appropriate nor necessary, merely reinforcing that those smart characters maybe should talk more about their challenges. All in all, really enjoyable, and the above-mentioned mistakes are forgivable.

Thoroughly Engrossing
By Karen Mercury
I liked this book so much I breezed through it in two nights, highly unusual for me! Reminded me very much of Lady Chatterly with the basic premise--aristocratic Lady falls for lower class employee. There was plenty of action and intrigue for me, each character was well-developed with their own distinct personality, and the hero...sigh.

I'm no expert in the Georgian England period, but historical sticklers will find fault with George's actions--spending the night at his cottage, showing up there unannounced and alone--but because of the witty and fast-paced writing style I was able to easily suspend disbelief. I believe I've read the Raven Prince, so will definitely check out one of her newer novels.

Amazon.com Review
Octavia Butler tackles the creation of a new religion, the making of a god, and the ultimate fate of humanity in her Earthseed series, which began with Parable of the Sower, and now continues with Parable of the Talents. The saga began with the near-future dystopian tale of Sower, in which young Lauren Olamina began to realize her destiny as a leader of people dispossessed and destroyed by the crumbling of society. The basic principles of Lauren's faith, Earthseed, were contained in a collection of deceptively simple proverbs that Lauren used to recruit followers. She teaches that "God is change" and that humanity's ultimate destiny is among the stars.

In Parable of the Talents, the seeds of change that Lauren planted begin to bear fruit, but in unpredictable and brutal ways. Her small community is destroyed, her child is kidnapped, and she is imprisoned by sadistic zealots. She must find a way to escape and begin again, without family or friends. Her single-mindedness in teaching Earthseed may be her only chance to survive, but paradoxically, may cause the ultimate estrangement of her beloved daughter. Parable of the Talents is told from both mother's and daughter's perspectives, but it is the narrative of Lauren's grown daughter, who has seen her mother made into a deity of sorts, that is the most compelling. Butler's writing is simple and elegant, and her storytelling skills are superb, as usual. Fans will be eagerly awaiting the next installment in what promises to be a moving and adventurous saga. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
Lauren Olamina, a black teenager, grew up in a 21st-century America that was tearing itself apart. Global warming, massive unemployment, gang warfare and corporate greed combined to break down society in general and her impoverished southern California neighborhood in particular. A victim of hyperempathy syndrome, a disorder that compels its victims to believe they feel others' pain, Lauren found herself homeless and alone in a violent world. Escaping from the urban jungle of Los Angeles, Lauren founded Acorn, a hard-working, prosperous rural community based on the teachings of Earthseed, a religion she herself created and centered on the ideas that God is Change and that humanity's destiny is to go to the stars. Butler's extraordinary Parable of the Sower (1996) detailed the aforementioned events. In this equally powerful sequel, Acorn is destroyed by the rising forces of Christian fundamentalism, led by the newly elected U.S. president, the Reverend Andrew Steele Jarret. A handsome man and persuasive orator, seemingly modeled in part on Pat Robertson, Jarret converts millions to his sect, Christian America, while his thugs imprison, rape and murder those they label "heathens," all the while kidnapping their children in order to raise them in Christian households. The narrative is both impassioned and bitter as Butler weaves a tale of a frighteningly believable near-future dystopia. Lauren, at once loving wife and mother, prophet and fanatic, victim and leader, gains stature as one of the most intense and well-developed protagonists in recent SF. Though not for the faint-hearted, this work stands out as a testament to the author's enormous talent, and to the human spirit.. Author tour. (Nov.) FYI: In 1995, Butler received a MacArthur Foundation ("genius") Award.

From Library Journal
In this brilliant sequel to Parable of the Sower (LJ 10/15/93), Nebula and Hugo Award winner Butler continues the compelling story of Lauren Olamina, chronicling her struggle for survival in a socially and economically depressed California in the 2030s. Lauren has founded a quiet community called Acorn, where she teaches people about Earthseed, her belief that God is simply another name for Change. Her community of believers is threatened, however, by the election of an ultraconservative president opposed to any religion not his own. Among his followers are fanatical terrorists who will stop at nothing to destroy what Lauren has built, including forcibly separating parents from their children. Butler tells this story through Lauren's journal entries, her poetry, and commentary from her daughter. Powerful, moving, and beautifully written, this book belongs in every library.?Laurel Bliss, New Haven, CT

My thoughts on Parable of the Talents
By 1kmm2be
I went into this novel expecting something great. I can only say simply that it was great. I read Parable of the Sower for an undergrad course and knew I wanted to revisit the novel on my own time and let the story unfold on its own with out the pressure of me having to make something from it.

Butler's voice stuck with me. I can hardly believe that much imagination came out of one human being, but I am glad it did. The Parable of the Talents just continues this great legacy she has left behind. I will be revisiting this work again. I highly recommend this book.

A dystopian tale that has only become more relevant
By Angela Janae
Butler is a master of science fiction. Her tales highlight political issues that seem more relevant than ever. She doesn't just create a believable dystopia though, she also looks at how we as a species can recover.

With complex characters and a willingness to look at the worst of humanity, Butler crafts a tale that thrills and disturbs. This isn't an easy read, but it is an interesting and important one.

The nightmare continues in a worthy sequel
By D. Cloyce Smith
One of those rare sequels that is better than the original (which itself was amazingly good), Butler continues the story of Lauren Olamina and her attempts to establish Acorn, a self-sufficient community in a nightmarishly dystopian world. Many of the elements of the previous novel are here--Lauren's genetic ability to feel the actual pain of others' experiences, the collapse of the U. S. government and its economy--but there is much new. Alaska has seceded from the nation, the U.S. is a war with Canada, and religious fundamentalists threaten what remains of the American way of life.
The sequel is told from three points of view. While much of the conflict is between Lauren and the brother she frees from slavery, Lauren's daughter provides a retrospective and balanced look at the eventual and inevitable hostility between the two siblings. The first half of the book portrays Acorn and its attempts to bloom in a hostile world. When the community comes under attack from the newly elected fundamentalist government that promises to restore law and order, the novel recalls--in a good way--Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale," especially in the portrayal of the hypocrisy of those in power and their attitude toward women. Part social commentary, part adventure story, the second half of the novel concerns Lauren's often desperate search for her daughter and her persistent desire to reestablish Earthseed, the religious system she has created which believes that humankind's ultimate destiny is to establish itself on other planets.
As usual, Butler is best when depicting intra- and interpersonal conflicts and when detailing the unusual specifics of her imagined world. But, because the novel is such a smorgasbord of themes and because she describes the rise, demise, and resurrection of a community of several dozen people, only the lead characters are meticulously sketched. Unlike her other books, the novel falters occasionally in its attempt to render the many characters, who are often difficult to distinguish.
Ultimately, Butler is kind to her readers: she doesn't leave the novel with an wide-open ending designed to generate sequels. But there's good news for those of us who enjoyed the first two books: in an interview at the end of the book she admits that she "intends to write about communities of Earthseed who, in fulfillment of the Destiny, go out to extrasolar worlds."

The Wedding, by Nicholas Sparks

With The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, and his other beloved novels, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nicholas Sparks has given voice to our deepest beliefs about the power of love. Now he brings us the long-awaited follow-up to The Notebook-a story of an ordinary man who goes to extraordinary lengths to win back the love of his life... After thirty years, Wilson Lewis is forced to face a painful truth: the romance has gone out of his marriage. His wife, Jane, has fallen out of love with him, and it is entirely his fault. Despite the shining example of his in-laws, Noah and Allie Calhoun, and their fifty-year love affair (originally recounted in The Notebook), Wilson himself is a man unable to express his true feelings. He has spent too little time at home and too much at the office, leaving the responsibility of raising their children to Jane. Now his daughter is about to marry, and his wife is thinking about leaving him. But if Wilson is sure of anything, it is this: His love for Jane has only grown over the years, and he will do everything he can to save their marriage. With the memories of Noah and Allie's inspiring life together as his guide, he vows to find a way to make his wife fall in love with him...all over again. In this powerfully moving tale of love lost, rediscovered, and renewed, Nicholas Sparks once again brings readers his unique insight into the only emotion that ultimately really matters.

From Publishers Weekly
Sparks's 1996 debut novel, The Notebook, was a fast and easy read that sold millions upon millions of copies. Other bestselling love stories followed (Message in a Bottle; A Walk to Remember; The Guardian), but Sparks's fans have from the very beginning eagerly anticipated a sequel to the romantic tale of Allie and Noah Calhoun. The wait is now over. Attorney Wilson Lewis has been married to Noah and Allie's daughter, Jane, for 30 years. Wilson and Jane have raised three children and lived a satisfying and prosperous life in the bucolic town of New Bern, N.C. After forgetting his anniversary, Wilson realizes that the passion and romance have gone out of his marriage and fears his wife no longer loves him. Being a methodical man, he decides to embark on a yearlong program to renew his romantic ties to his wife, seeking out the advice of Noah, who now spends his days in a retirement home feeding a swan he is sure is the reincarnation of his beloved Allie. In the midst of Wilson's machinations, his daughter Anna announces she is getting married. The upcoming wedding provides Wilson with the opportunity to bring his elaborate plan to fruition. Sparks tells his sweet story competently, without sinking too deeply into the mire of sentiment; a gasp-inducing twist comes at the very end. Satisfied female readers will close the covers with a sigh and a wish that a little of the earnest, too-good-to-be-true Wilson might rub off on their own bedmates.

From Booklist
Sparks returns to characters from The Notebook (1996) and writes about Allie and Noah Calhoun's oldest daughter, Jane, and her husband, Wilson. As their thirtieth anniversary approaches, Wilson realizes that he loves Jane now more than ever and worries that his neglect (he completely forgot their twenty-ninth anniversary) may have finally driven her away. Wilson plans on showing Jane how much he loves her, but then their oldest daughter, Anna, announces that she and her boyfriend are getting married and asks if they can plan a small utilitarian wedding on her parents' anniversary. Jane agrees to share the date and convinces Anna to have a formal wedding; something that Jane missed. Jane is surprised by Wilson's willingness to work and ability to come up with truly miraculous arrangements. This sort of involvement is out of character for Wilson, a workaholic estate attorney in New Bern, North Carolina, but he really is determined to change, and Sparks is at his romantic best in this tender love story about a flawed hero trying to right his wrongs. ... not only change 360 degrees but would become the best husband in the world
By Charles Oldham
The story is not realistic that the main male character would not only change 360 degrees but would become the best husband in the world. The story line did not develop his character, just turned on a switch.

A disappointing read.......
By Lynda Palecek
I have read all of Nicholas Sparks books, but The Wedding did not keep my interest as others had. The theme was boring and fairly predictable. I will continue to read Nicholas Sparks work and hope his other books are different.

Good love story with some ups and downs.
By MKH
Wilson's marriage runs into problems after 30 years. His wife Jane is no longer in love with him. This is devastating to him because his parents have been married for 50 years. He has a hard time showing his feelings. He spent so little time at home. He was always working at the office. He is realizing that now that his marriage in just about over. Jane had to raise her children alone. Now his daughter is going to get married and he is trying to win his wife back. If you liked the Notebook you will love this one also.
