Sandra Brown, the #1 New York Times bestselling author, keeps readers turning pages with an explosive tale of a long-ago crime and the victim's plan for revenge...When New York publisher Maris Matherly Reed receives a tantalizing manuscript from someone identified only as P.M.E., its blockbuster potential-and perhaps something else-compels her to meet its author. On an eerie, ruined cotton plantation on a remote Georgia island she finds Parker Evans, a man concealing his identity and his past. Maris is drawn into his tale of two young friends and a deadly betrayal ... and to Parker himself. But there's something especially chilling about this novel, its possible connection to Maris's own life, and the real-life character who uses her, or anyone, to get what he wants.

Amazon.com Review
The prologue of a novel arrives in the Manhattan offices of a book editor, who's intrigued enough to chase its mysterious author, identified only by his initials, to his decrepit plantation on an island off the Georgia Coast. That's the first clue that fiction is stranger than fact; few publishers (if any) would go to that sort of trouble for anything less than a new J.D. Salinger novel. But bestselling author Sandra Brown makes the most of her far-fetched premise, setting up a convoluted plot that keeps the reader engrossed despite its flaws and foibles.

Maris Matherly-Reed is more than an editor. She's also the beloved daughter of the publishing house's highly respected and successful leader, and the wife of Matherly Press's second-in-command, the smooth, suave, double-dealing Noah Reed. Reed, it develops, is the real target of the literary scam set up by the reclusive writer of the novel whose opening pages so captivate Reed's spouse. P.M.E., the writer, has a score to settle with Maris's husband, and he doesn't care whom he hurts as long as he brings Noah down. At least, not until he meets Maris, who has an unfortunate habit of falling in love with her authors (see above; that's the second clue). Brown is a master at romantic suspense, and Envy displays the talents that have won her a devoted following: a deft hand at evoking the vulnerability and humanity of her protagonists, a sure command of narrative tension, and a nice sense of place. This is a terrific hammock read, just right for a summer day as sultry and humid as Envy's Low Country setting. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Style and form are usually the least of prolific bestselling romance/thriller writer Brown's concerns, but in her latest effort she takes on an unusual challenge, setting out to craft a novel within a novel within a novel. The onion begins to peel when editor Maris Matherly-Reed plucks a prologue from the slush pile and finds herself hooked by the steamy prose. The author has furthermore titillated her by breaking the rules: no SASE, no cover letter. Maris knows only that his initials are P.M.E. and he lives on St. Anne Island in Georgia. (How does she know P.M.E. is a man? She... knows.) Gutsy, idealistic, deliciously sexy, Maris is married to philandering sociopath Noah Reed, who runs Matherly Press with Maris and her father, Daniel, last of the silver-maned gentleman publishers. As for P(arker) M(ackensie) E(vans), he's a bitter, wheelchair-bound, first-time novelist or is he? Is he using Maris to avenge himself against Noah, or does he love her madly or can the answer be all of the above? Cutting back and forth between the bernovel and Parker's autobiographical novel about a purloined novel, Brown stages one dramatic scene after another. The narrative voices don't change much (although the typefaces do), but Brown's loyal legions frankly won't give a damn. (Aug. 28) Forecast: Brown could probably write a novel in blank verse and still hit the bestseller lists, so her experimentation here (mild, in any case) won't throw readers. The book is a Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selection and a BOMC alternate, and major TV, radio and print media ad campaigns (plus New York transit ads) will blanket the country. Expect the expected: a blockbuster.

Good book written by Sandra Brown
By Barbara Davis
Good book written by Sandra Brown. Suspense, love, and plotting all involved. When I first started the book, I was a little confused, but quickly began to understand the story line. There were so many details regarding everything, I felt as if I were there with Maris. I really enjoyed the book, but did foresee how it would end towards the middle of the book. I was hoping for a little more suspense and on the edge of my seat reading than that. But in all, I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading another Sandra Brown novel.

Oh my word! This is a winner no matter what category you place it in. From the first paragraph I was in for a pound. The character were beautifully drawn. The plot was revealed unusually. Took me. A minute to figure out the different way of telling the story. It was a winner. So clever. The love scenes were sensitive and very moving. And she saved the last plot twist for the best. An all around best read.

Two of the victims' widows-accomplished artist Diane Stevens and international supermodel Kelly Harris-may hold the key to their husbands' demise. Terrified for their lives, suspicious of each other, and armed only with their own wits and guile, they must join forces in a nightmare cycle of hunt-and-kill. From Publishers Weekly
Two gorgeous widows go up against a nefarious multinational think tank in this airbrushed but goofily entertaining thriller by perennial bestseller Sheldon (The Sky Is Falling; Tell Me Your Dreams; etc.). Four scientists working for the New York–based Kingsley International Group have died or disappeared within 24 hours. Wolfish top boss Tanner Kingsley vows to find the perpetrator; meanwhile, stunning artist Diane Stevens, wife of a just-murdered KIG scientist, and supermodel Kelly Harris, whose husband has likewise been killed, find themselves under attack by mysterious strangers. Diane and Kelly form an uneasy alliance, though both spend most of their time ruminating on their wonderful (now dead) husbands: "I want to feel you stroking my breast.... I want to imagine that I can hear your voice saying that I make the best paella in the world...." The plot is straightforward: people are killed, women are in peril and an evil CEO (Tanner, gasp!) has a plot to take over the world. His technique involves controlling the weather, and in an intriguing short afterword, Sheldon explains the very real possibilities of just such a scenario. The on-the-lam ladies, Kelly and Diane, escape every assassination attempt with ridiculous ease, and other characters appear and disappear simply in order to get the author out of one plot pickle after another. Still, despite (or because of) Sheldon's blithe unconcern for logic and his just-add-water relationships, this is a breezily pleasing read.

From Booklist
Readers don't expect literary genius from Sheldon, but they do expect to be entertained, and once again the popular TV-producer-turned-storyteller delivers the goods. When four top scientists at the imposing think tank KIG wind up dead in four different parts of the world, is it coincidence? Two of the victims' wives--the elegant artist, Diane, who just testified against a Mob boss, and the gorgeous model Kelly, who flew to New York from Paris at the behest of her dead husband's boss--inadvertently meet, and they find themselves connected because someone is apparently trying to kill them, too. It could be the Mob underlings who promised retribution against Diane for having testified against their Godfather. Or is it possible the women's husbands were so deep into their secret project for KIG that they may have been a threat to its secrecy, and now the wives must die, too? This novel is short on character development and long on cliched literary techniques, but it is, nevertheless, the best kind of guilty pleasure. Mary Frances Wilkens

Don't Bother Turning On the Lights
By Rhonda R. Mcgowan
I'm so disappointed at the demise of my favorite author's writing that I am near tears. I've been a fan of Sidney Sheldon's since The Other Side of Midnight. I requested his newest book for Xmas and was excited to get this as requested. I planned an afternoon when I would be uninterrupted to begin his latest suspense thriller.

To my great disappointment, the storyline of this book reminded me of a storyline from General Hospital back in the 1980's -- the evil scientist has created a weather machine...

The characters were scantily developed, and were quite unlikable. The details of nearly everything were very sketchy. I found myself LAUGHING at the pathetic plot. The entire story is two women running around, followed by inept assassins, with the evil scientist anticipating their every move.

The book began with such promise, and Sheldon's ability to keep me turning pages remains a strong skill. It took me a little over three hours to read this expensive hardback.

I have NEVER read a book so bad that I will not forward it on to friends, or donate it. This one made it straight into the trash.

Diane and Kelly's Excellent Adventure
By Kona
Sidney Sheldon's latest novel follows in the tradition of his previous best-sellers and his fans will not be disappointed. This time out, we learn that several key employees of an international think tank have been horribly and mysteriously murdered. Two of their widows, Diane Stevens and Kelly Harris, join forces to uncover the truth and find themselves marked for death as well. We follow the intrepid ladies from New York to Europe and back again in a race against time to find the one responsible for killing their husbands, all the while being watched by a power-hungry madman who wants to control the world.

Sheldon specializes in breezy dramas featuring beautiful, strong, and infinitely resourceful young women; in this story, we get two of them - naive artist Diane and cynical supermodel, Kelly. There are frequent flashbacks to reveal details of their lives as well as insight into the villain's twisted mind. The ladies find themselves in mortal peril countless times, and they come out of each sticky situation by using their brains, pluck, and good-old-Sidney Sheldon girl-power.

If you like Sheldon's lightweight but often exciting brand of chick-flick-type novels, you will enjoy "Are You Afraid of the Dark?"

Excellent! Non-stop thrills of action and intrigue.
By Nick G
In different parts of the world four people died in accidents, or that's what the killer wants it to look like. The victims were all strangers with one thing in common...they all worked for Kinsley International Group, the world's largest think tank.

Two of the victim's wives, Diane Stevens and Kelly Harris attend a meeting at Kinsley International and soon after they are attacked by an unknown assailant.

Not knowing who to trust or where to turn the two women must work together if they are to find out what happened to their husbands. Traveling the world, Diane and Kelly dodge bullet after bullet while racing to get the answers surrounding their husband's death's until they realize the answers may be buried within the walls of Kinsley International.

`Are You Afraid Of The Dark' is excellent! I did not put this down until I finished it. This is pure non-stop entertainment and should be judged as just that. Yes, the plot gets a little silly, but it's highly enjoyable. Yes, the two women manage to stay ahead of the killers at every turn, but they are so likable you can overlook how unrealistic it is. Yes, the two women thwart the attacks on their life throughout the whole story, but it keeps the pages turning. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it's filled with action, murder and several surprises. I can describe this novel only one way...international intrigue filled Gucci and Prada.

Sidney Sheldon has been one of my favorite authors for years and his long awaited new novel is the proof as to why; the man writes books that simply can't-be-put-down. `Are You Afraid Of The Dark' is a thrilling read filled with twists and surprises.

A must read blockbuster!

He's about to get his wish in a way no one could ever predict....A twist of fate will bring John to the Bend, a black settlement that has become a refuge for outcasts, where he'll join Tuway, a black man who helps others leave the South and find a new life in Chicago. But neither will be ready for the brutal confrontation about to change their lives, challenge the prejudice of an era, inspire the courage of a people, and most of all, touchingly reveal the secrets of one boy's heart.

Amazon.com Review
Out of the Night That Covers Me takes place a decade before the civil rights movement, but the spirit of the coming upheaval hangs over its pages as heavily as the humidity of an Alabama summer. Pat Cunningham Devoto's second novel revolves around two characters: John McMillan, a precocious, sheltered 8-year-old sent to live with poor relations after his mother's death, and Tuway, an African American with a foot in both the black and white worlds. Their stories intersect when the powerful Judge Vance takes an interest in John. He brings the boy to work at the Planters and Merchants Bank of Lower Peach Tree, where the mysteriously disfigured Tuway acts as his assistant. The judge, we soon learn, is no judge at all. Instead, his title is an allusion to his economic omnipotence: "He the one says if you get a crop loan or not. Round here, if you gets a crop loan, you can make it, and if you don't, you might just as well go on off down the road."

A suspiciously large number of black families have done just that, defaulting on debts and fleeing Alabama's cotton fields for the factories of Chicago. But who provides the money and means for their flight? As John learns more about the financial and political intrigues of Lower Peach Tree, he dreams of making his own escape from his abusive new family. The events that follow forge an unlikely alliance between the silent, wounded black man and the equally wounded orphan--and test their courage in unexpected ways.

As skillfully as Devoto evokes time and place, her novel is not without flaws. John's voice, for example, tends toward the irritatingly precious, and the writing sometimes falls flat. Yet the author movingly portrays the ways poverty can both pinch lives into meanness (witness the case of John's alcoholic Uncle Luther) and challenge people to face their problems together, as in the all-black community known as the Bend. If this juxtaposition of violence and cooperation seems a little, well, black and white, that's part of the book's charm; its moral sureties belong to a time when good and evil were as easy to distinguish in life as they are in fiction. --Chloe Byrne

From Publishers Weekly
This affecting Southern coming-of-age novel continues the story of John McMillan, the bright but overprotected eight-year-old boy introduced, in a minor role, in Devoto's debut novel (My Last Days as Roy Rogers). When his widowed mother dies in the mid-1950s, John is taken by her sister, his Aunt Nelda Spraig, from his comfortable home in northern Alabama to the small town of Lower Peach Tree in Alabama's Black Belt. There he is shocked to learn that Nelda and her family live in a dog-trot house, with no indoor plumbing or electricity. John suffers the brutality of his alcoholic Uncle Luther, who forces him to hoe cotton under a hot sun until his eyes swell shut and his skin blisters, who sells off all of the boy's family possessions and whips him with a belt. John's spirits begin to lift, however, when he is taken under the wing of kindly "Judge" Bryon Vance. The president of the local bank, the Judge makes reasonable crop loans to sharecroppers, thus incurring the enmity of the white landowners. Working as an office and yard boy for the blind Judge, John learns that "the coloreds" are slipping out of town, reportedly headed for Chicago. But how do they manage to leave, since they don't have money for train fare and don't own automobiles? The solution to the mystery seems to lie with Tuway, the Judge's awe-inspiring black right-hand man and general factotum whose life becomes interwoven with John's. Devoto's narrative voice is sometimes awkward; factual details (historical, geographic and agricultural) often feel stuffed into the story. Moreover, we seem to have met these characters before in To Kill a Mockingbird and other classics of Southern literature. Their familiar story is a haunting one, however; part of the fabric of American life, it bears frequent retelling. (Jan. 4)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-John's middle-class, college-educated mother was widowed during World War II. She sheltered her infant son and trained him in the finer points of social propriety. The novel opens when John is eight. His mother has just died, and he is forced to leave his clean, comfortable home in Bainbridge, AL, to move to Lower Peach Tree with his Aunt Nelda; her husband, Luther Spraig; and their two children. The Spraigs are a poor, white, sharecropping family. Luther is an abusive and bitter alcoholic, and John is shocked by his greatly reduced standard of living. He eventually gets some relief from the terrorism and squalor of his new home when a well-respected businessman and his wife hire him to do odd jobs. He meets black people from the community and begins to learn about their hardships and frustrations, and eventually seeks refuge with them. This novel illustrates in a very personal way the unfair socioeconomic conditions of Southern states during the 1950s that led to increased migration to Northern cities and to the Civil Rights Movement. There is a cataclysmic confrontation between the poor blacks and an oppressive white landowner's representatives. Students who have read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn will enjoy pointing out the many parallels in this novel while noticing how Devoto avoids negative or stereotypical portrayals.

Why Wasn't This Book A National Best Sellor?
By C. Ellen Connally
I have read many best selling and award winning novels and found them wanting. One wonders sometimes - "Why did this book get an award." My question about OUT OF THE NIGHT.... is "Why didn't it get an award?" As a student of the South, this book gives an interesting look at the South of the 1950's and the changing social norms. Change is a major theme in the book and it would be interesting to discuss with a book club or with students the examples of change. The characters are well developed, although I thought some of the black characters were not as well developed. It would be interesting to do a comparison of Aunt Nelda and Mrs. Vance. Although they appear much different, they have much in common. And likewise between John and Little Luther. The book is magical and a wonderful read and would be excellent for a book club. It could give rise to great discussions and the edition I have has questions included. Don't start it unless you have time to read the whole thing. For those who liked TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD it's a must read.

Living with little to nothing
By Donna Vaughn
I loved this book. The author is so descriptive he makes you feel like you are in the swamps or in the shack that the people lived in. Growing up in the South on a farm, I saw people that lived like the people in the book. I'm thankful to authors that can write about the times that were so difficult for black people and poor whites in the time period of this book. I think people of the later generations or people who grew up in the cities have no idea what it was like for them.

Out of the Night That Covers Me is a wonderful, magical book. Ms. DeVoto's lyrical style has captured the essence of the time in a way that draws you right into the story and never lets you go. The characters--whom I loved--are so real, I'd know them if I met them on the street. This book should win prizes.

Only one-third of this book is useful.
By Aspiring Entrepreneur
Only one-third of the book covers what a typical Rich Dad Poor Dad reader would expect: how to use corporations to protect one's assets. The information in this section is really helpful and interesting, especially for beginners. The author provided great examples to illustrate key points. The writing overall, however, could be improved by having better summaries of each chapter and by defining every new legal term used in the book (for example, the book never defined "indemnification" but it used it frequently).

Another one-third of the book covers how to start a company and take it public (have it listed as a public stock). I don't think any typical Rick Dad Poor Dad reader has this purpose in mind for their businesses or real estate purchases, so this second part of the book is utterly useless and irrelevant to most readers. The last one-third of the book basically lists the laws for incorporation for each state, which is useful, but I'm sure the author could have provided a webpage to list all this information.

Another thing to consider is that this book might be outdated. It was published in 2001, and laws may have changed by now (this review is written in early 2006). For example, the double-taxation policy of dividends was changed after the publication of this book. I think the author might have overcome this by providing updates to important relevant laws through a website or something similar.

For all these reasons, I'd recommend the interested reader to explore other sources first. Unfortunately, I can't recommend other books yet. If there doesn't seem to be any other good sources, then consider reading this book only if you can buy it used or borrow it from the library.

Good book - ignore the critics
By A Customer
I have read several books on setting up a corporation and still found many useful nuggets of information in here.Garrett Sutton is a legitimate authority and knows what he is talking about unlike some of the other books that are creeping up on the market place today...

Good step for expanding one's financial literacy
By MISTER SJEM
Fans of Kiyosaki will enjoy this book as it delves into the specifics of setting up and utilizing the benefits of corporations, as well as other legal entities. However, the book is geared mostly towards those who wish to create a corporation.
Within it, the author details the requirements per each state as well as some helpful advice which would take tens of hours to get from various advisors.
Overall, this is a good book. If you wish to know a bit more, check out INC. and GROW RICH! by Robert Allen.
NOTE: if you're going to own real estate, my advisors told me that LLCs and Limited Partnerships are the best vehicles. Corporations tend to get hit with an additional self-employment tax so you don't get the passive cashflow benefits...
I used to think like that and had a dead end day job. Now, I'm making more than ever and, in less than five years, I plan to be financially free.
Good luck to those who keep an open mind.

Broken clocks tick...beds rise in the air...paintings fly across the room...locked doors fling open...crystal chandeliers shake...heavy footsteps and eerie piano music sound in the dead of night-and that's just for starters. Welcome to the Myrtles Long recognized as America's most haunted house both by parapsychologists and the media, The Myrtles is a twenty-eight-room Louisiana bed-and-breakfast once owned by Frances Kermeen. In this spine-tingling chronicle, Frances tells the story of how she was drawn to this former plantation mansion, its bone-chilling history, and the incredible encounters of the ghostly kind she had that forever changed her beliefs about the supernatural-and just may change yours. Along with the sometimes terrifying, sometimes benevolent hauntings, her years at The Myrtles also brought death threats from the Ku Klux Klan, the tragic loss of friends, a catastrophic betrayal, and other personal challenges. They would all converge with the paranormal phenomena around her into one cataclysmic event...

Interesting subject, terrible author.
By L. G. Tomberlin
While the subject matter is fascinating, the author is terrible. She writes the voices of white Southern neighbors as if they were all ignorant, nosy and rude. And her interpretation of the Southern accent made me cringe. Worse, her idea of what black people sound like they are all completely uneducated.

It did amuse me that while she was portraying other human characters terribly, her own experiences with the spirits seem to show that she was highly unstable and overwrought. If anyone had actually had traumatic experiences every single day the way she describes, they would have burned the plantation down decades ago.

Visit the Myrtles
By Tamela Mccann
I became interested in the Myrtles Plantation after seeing a Ghost Hunters episode on Sci-Fi a few years ago. Apparently this Louisiana plantation was crawling ghosts, and the ghost hunting team did in fact have some success in uncovering some odd happenings. So when a friend suggested this book, I jumped at the chance to find out a little more about this mysterious place deep in the south.

Written by Frances Kermeen, owner of the Myrtles Plantation during the 1980s, we are told the history and the alleged ghostly encounters that have taken place there. Frances felt compelled to purchase the Myrtles after a brief visitation in 1980, and she and her then husband spent a good deal of time renovating and updating the plantation. Almost immediately upon taking possession, Frances began hearing unexplained noises and seeing strange lights and even faces. During the decade in which she owned the Myrtles, the odd events were almost a daily occurence, with many of the guests also having weird things happen. Though Frances loved the house, eventually her life fell apart (whether or not it was the house, as she hints), and she sold out and moved away around 1990. Fifteen years later she decided to write this rather dramatic tale of what went on while she lived on the property.

This is a good book, with lots of action and plenty of "evidence" that ghosts do indeed haunt the Myrtles. Frances admits to being dramatic (she even hosted several murder mystery weekends at the plantation) and this comes across throughout the book. The writing itself is a bit choppy and amateurish, but the book does flow and you can feel her enthusiasm for the place. I admit to being highly skeptical of some of the things Frances described (she really lost me with the "crying portraits") but I don't doubt for a second that she endured constant demonstrations of ghosts during her tenure at the Myrtles. My take is that some of the stories may have been embellished somewhat, but with so many people visiting the plantation and experiencing much the same activities, there must be something to the tales. This is a fun read and it did give me some interesting background into a fascinating home that's indeed alive...with history.

The Myrtles Plantation
By Guess
I originally bought this book because my daughter and I are planning to stay at the Myrtles Plantation for a one night visit. I found the book to be very informative about many details of the house, and also it's history. It did scare me a little bit, but even more; it made me want to visit the house so I could see for myself and look for the many things I've read about. I found it to be very interesting and would suggest this book to anyone wanting to read about the supernatural along with one woman's quest and experiences in life.

Close, but no hot toddy
By A Customer
I've owned this book for years. It has most of the drinks about which I've ever been curious. But this morning it failed me -- I looked up "toddy" and "hot toddy," and found nothing. I'd think this would be such a common drink that it'd be in every book. So Mr. Boston's is a good reference, but not the compleat one.

Andrew Grove has earned fame and fortune as chairman and cofounder of Intel. But, we learn from this remarkable memoir, he began life under very different circumstances, narrowly escaping the Holocaust and the closing of the Iron Curtain.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1936, Grove--then called Andras Grof--grew up in a modestly prosperous, secular Jewish family. Through foresight and sheer good fortune, they avoided the fate of many of their fellow Jews, fleeing the Nazis into the countryside and living in a dark cellar in which "the sound of artillery was a continuous backdrop." Under the Communist regime that followed, Grove distinguished himself as a student of chemistry and was seemingly destined for a comfortable position in academia or industry--until revolution broke out in 1956 and he found himself in that cellar once again.

How Grove emerged, "swam across" to America, and made a new life under a new name makes a satisfying conclusion to this humane memoir, which gives readers valuable insight into the business guru and technologist. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
"Jesus Christ was killed by the Jews, and because of that, all of the Jews will be thrown into the Danube," says a playmate to four-year-old Andris Grof Grove's original name. Born to a middle-class Jewish family in 1936, Grove, chairman of Intel, grew up in Budapest during his country's most tempestuous era. Despite avoiding deportation and death, Grove's family lived in fear during Nazi occupation and lost some rights and property. Afterwards, they lived under Soviet control. Curiously, Grove's memoir charts the routinized mundanities of his teen years seeing his teacher at the opera, being afraid to meet young women at the local public pool, the success of a short story he wrote more than life in war-torn Europe. But his discussion of contemporary politics is astute and personal "I had mixed feelings about the Communists... they had saved my mother's life and my own.... On the other hand... they increasingly interfered with our daily life." Never didactic, he remains focused on his own intellectual growth. Grove continued his education in New York after the 1956 revolution failed. The intelligence, dedication and ingenuity that earned him fame and fortune (he was Time's Man of the Year in 1997) are evident early on. He deftly balances humor e.g., subversive anti-Communist jokes from Hungary with insight into overcoming endless obstacles (from hostile foreign invasions to New York's City University system). Though lacking in drama, Grove's story stands smartly amid inspirational literature by self-made Americans. B&w photos. (Nov. 12)Forecast: Warner's fanfare pre-pub bookseller luncheons, Jewish Book Fair appearances, publication events in New York and San Francisco and concerted media campaigns will bring this book to readers' attention despite it not being the sort of business-oriented book most would expect from Grove. Its unexpected subject matter will mean that, despite the Grove name, it won't come near to matching Welch-size sales, but still, it should thrive.

From Library Journal
Andris Grof was born in 1936 in Hungary; years later, he changed his name to Andrew Grove and went on to help found the Intel Corporation, eventually becoming its CEO and chairman. Grove's memoir recounts his early life in Budapest from his perspective as a Jewish boy trying to make sense of a world torn apart by World War II, the Nazi persecution of the Jews, and the repression of communism. He describes his escape to New York City after the failed 1956 Hungarian Revolution and how he began to assimilate into American culture. His simple, evenhanded, almost unemotional writing style stands in stark contrast to the events around him, making them seem all the more horrific. While this memoir presents no broad political or historical insights, it is a poignant reminder of the great suffering that took place during the middle part of the last century. This excellent book is recommended for all public libraries and for academic libraries where there is interest in the effects of World War II or the American immigration experience.

The Antidote for CEO Excess
By Andy Orrock
Consider this book your antidote for all the recent tales of CEO excess and duplicity. Andy Grove's story of his first 20 years in Hungary and New York City tells us how the events of World War II and the Hungarian Revolution shaped the integrity and inner drive of one man.
The story is compelling in its own right. But to read the story of Andras Grof and realize that this boy and his distant childhood turned into Andrew S. Grove...well, it's a journey of unfathomable proportions.
To his credit, Grove never oversells the story. He is quite forthright about his role in the Revolution - he was simply a bystander. Fellow Hungarians have read his story and lauded him for his accuracy and honesty.
Grove's writing style is sparse and direct. He recalls events with clarity and without extensive interpretation. He gives credit to a couple of editors who helped shape the story, most notably Norman Pearlstine of Time. But this is no ghost-written CEO treatise. These are obviously his words.
Some will read "Swimming Across" and conclude that it is a statement about the triumph of the American system. Grove notes near the end of the book "I've continued to be amazed by the fact that as I progressed through school and my career, no one has ever resented my success on account of my being an immigrant."
While there's an element of that, I think you'll see it more as a simple but brilliant testament to the Power of One Man.
Long live Andy Grove.

Memories of an incredible contributor
By Zoltan Csimma
I was privileged to know Andy when he was CEO of Intel. He was an intense competitor in everything and a gentleman in the process. This is one of the best autobiographies I've read.

An inspiring tale and lesson
By Nicholas J. Csorba
The Book is easy to read and understand and gives you the sense that, today, you learned a fine lesson in growing up in self fullfillment and what it takes. The book is a story of success against a turmoil filled landscape. It is clearly a reaching out story, to young and old, in history, self-achievement, and good people. We are a much too distracted people today to follow through as this author had. Alot to learn, should you be able to apply oneself to the lesson. Bravo to this hungarian man and writer. I have always searched for this book, being Hungarian and appreciative of excellent historical and biographical stories.

Amazon.com Review
An informative and absorbing read for both medical practitioners and their patients, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer takes aim at "the breast cancer industry" with a barrage of thought-provoking ammunition.

The book is equal parts criticism and suggestion. Current health treatments, including HRT, receive serious condemnation, and authors John Lee and David Zava carefully provide plenty of medical research to back up claims that excessive estrogen is a main source of cancer-causing irregularities. While the names of all the different natural and synthetic hormones can get overwhelming for the lay reader, with perseverance your new vocabulary of terms like androstenedione, estradiol, and cortisol will enable you to communicate more effectively with your doctors. The authors credit these hormones not just with a role in cancer, but with culpability for everything from insomnia and acne to fatigue and migraines. A full chapter extols the virtues of natural progesterone cream, and urges women to order their own saliva tests for proper evaluation of their hormone levels.

Diet and exercise recommendations are simple, outlining reasons to limit fats, sugars, and meats while increasing vegetables and adding a multivitamin. These recommendations extend to adolescents and urge getting off the couch and beginning a gentle exercise program to women of all ages and in each stage of life. --Jill Lightner

A must read!!!
By Amazon Customer
This book is a must read for anyone with a new diagnosis of cancer. It can keep you from making stupid mistakes that put your life at risk. Sadly, I didn't see this until three years after mine and now I live with the "side effects" of the "Gold Standard Care" (cut - poison - burn) and my mangled body, not to mention having to live with the fear of secondary cancers caused by the treatments I was given. This book exposes a lot of lies told by the oncology community. I wish I'd have seen this three years ago. I sure would have done things differently.

GLAD I HAVE THIS!
By Armida Snyder
It was given to me several years ago, and I even forgot I had it. Unfortunately, just recently I was diagnosed with breast cancer and suddenly it became very relevant! I am so glad I had it! It is very informative and a fairly easy read. Somewhat technical in areas, but understandable.

Quackery!
By A Customer
I've read many, many books on breast cancer (I have breast cancer). I was looking forward to an interesting, if controversial view from Dr. Lee. What I found is utter quackery, peppered with incorrect facts and damaging assumptions. While I will agree with Dr. Lee's general assertion that hormone balance is a good thing (for anyone, not just women with or trying to avoid breast cancer), some of the other falsehoods he spews are just too much. For instance, he purportedly quotes Christiane Northrup (I can't imagine that she affiliates herself with this idiot), but says that she has published a book entitled Our Bodies, Ourselves. Well, Dr. Northrup did not write Our Bodies, Ourselves, the women of the Boston Women's Health Book Collective wrote it. Dr. Northrup wrote Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom - which is a terrific book. Dr. Lee also talks about the mental/emotional factors that "cause" breast cancer - he erroneously states that the "typical" breast cancer patient is a woman who takes care of others to the exclusion of herself, is always giving, who may have unresolved hostility toward her mother . . . all unsubstantiated generalizations which describe many, many women in whole or in part - not just women with breast cancer. Were it so easy that taking care of oneself prevented breast cancer! The fact is, the biggest identifiable risk factor for contracting breast cancer is having breasts. This guy shouldn't be trumpeting b.s. like this and you shouldn't be reading it.

From Booklist
Getting the word from school authorities that your child has head lice is an unfortunately common traumatic occurrence for parents. Copeland's manual on how to handle the news comes with cartoon illustrations and a light-enough tone--chapter titles like "EEK! Your Child Has Lice" and "Your Lousy Home" capture how the news often makes parents feel--to cheer while it informs anxious moms and dads. It covers the map on head lice: where they come from, how to get rid of them, how to avoid them in the first place, and more. Copeland considers both commercial and homemade lice treatments and addresses common concerns and questions about the creatures, too. If forewarned is forearmed, this little book should be available to all parents of school-aged children. Mike Tribby

Easy to read matter of fact solution to frustrating problem
By A Customer
I found this book to be very helpful in outling the process for eliminating headlice. The section describing the life cycle of lice from nit to mature, egg-producing louse was very helpful in making clear why nit picking and reapplication of treatment is necessary. My children have had lice 4 times and each time have been able to clear up the problem before it got out of hand. Daily manual nit picking (not relying on nit combs) I have found is the only way to produce a successful result.
The only concern I have with the book is the advise to leave the treatment on the hair longer than the manufacturer's recommendation of 10 minutes. When using such potent chemicals, I think it is wise to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and not overdo. Longer is not necessarily better and may actually be harmful.

The National Pediculosis Association pans LiceBuster book
By A Customer
The National Pediculosis Association critiqued this book, giving it two thumbs down. The book contradicts its own directives and authorizes the use of chemicals in ways that fly in the face of approved indications by the Food and Drug Administration. Such misuse of pesticidal products can pose health risks to children. References are made to scientists David Taplin and Terri Meinking to falsely imply their approval of the contents of the book. The National Pediculosis Association has requested that this book be pulled from the market. It is the NPA's opinion that the misinformation imparted by this book has added to the unnecessary confusion surrounding this public health problem. The NPA has also received many complaints about the book from school nurses.

Beware the National Pediculosis Association
By Busy Mom
Please take the review by the National Pediculosis Association with a large grain of salt. This is an organization that is at odds with all of the major medical organizations regarding the treatment of lice, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Harvard School of Public Health, and the Centers for Disease Control, to name a few. The NPA discourages the use of all lice products except nit-picking using one particular comb, which they sell. All of the research they refer to on their website dates from the early 1900's. They do not list their own credentials, or even their names, so I suspect that they have no medical or research credentials at all. It would appear that the NPA is an authority on lice in the same way the Flat Earth Society is an authority on the shape of the planet!
