An endearing hero and mouth watering recipes
By omnireader
Cecile Lamalle's second entry in her culinary mystery series featuring Charly Poisson, chef and owner of the best (and only) French restaurant in Van Buren County makes an entertaining read and actually makes you want to cook! Charly, very French and vey quirky, is also an amateur sleuth, much to the chagrin of local law enforcement. When the seeming suicide of Patty, the pastry chef's friend, Amanda, turns out to be murder and the county is hit by a series of antique thefts, Charly is drawn into the search for the culprits. Mix in the mob and you have a situation that could turn out to be very dangerous. Both the believable characters and the mystery make a very agreeable diversion.

An endearing culinary mystery
By Sustainable Global Foodie
Cecile Lamalle's second book in the series is a vast improvement over her first, Appetite for Murder. The characters in Glutton for Punishment are charming. Many of their relationships warm the heart. After misplacing this book, I read Prepared for Murder (the 3rd and last book in the series) out of order, and am now bereft that after reading this book, for me, the series is over. IMO, Glutton for Punishment is the best book in the series.

Lamalle shares the following 8 recipes in Glutton for Punishment: Lobster Stew, Apple Pie with Rum Butter Cream, Choucroute Garni, Leek and Potato Soup, Braised Short Ribs, Charly's Meat Loaf, Charly's Sauteed Rib Pork Chops, and Tripes a la Mode de Caen. I am not much into tripe, but the rest of the recipes look yummy. Most of the recipes are simple, and rely on good quality ingredients to shine through like the food in Charly's restaurant. The Choucroute Garni, though, has a page's worth of ingredients, 5 of them meats to go along with the 2 lbs of sauerkraut and 8 potatoes. Still, the dish is very simple to make, and looks scrumptious.

THE FIRST THING THEY PRONOUNCE YOU IN LIFE IS "HUSBAND AND WIFE". THE NEXT THING IS "DEAD".

Up till now, preparing for marriage was a lot like preparing for death: You didn't know what was ahead and there was nothing you could do about it anyway! LIFE SENTENCE changes all that with honest, guy-to-guy advice and counsel. Think of it this way: It's like getting your grubby hands on the other team's playbook before the big game. Which is why it's the one book they -- girlfriends, fiancees, and divorce lawyers -- don't want you to read. You'll gain valuable insights into:

BEING ENGAGED: It's the romantic equivalent of being in cyberspace. The ring is like signing a lease with an option to buy.

FIDELITY: If you think that fidelity is a raw deal, remember that she made the same deal. With you. You're the last guy she gets.

GOLF: Never, ever play with her.

And I thought *I* was cynical!
By D. Wrege
The only other book that has caused me to laugh out loud as much was, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Sadly, this information is as frightening as it is funny.
I've already purchased two to give to friends, and I'll have to get more. Any male who is about to get hitched should read this and weep. It's the terrible truth. I know. I've been there.

this was a quick, funny book that both my HUSBANDand I loved. If I wasn"t already married I would have bought it for him anyway . Some really great stories that made us really laugh. I suggest this book to all men, married, engaged, divorced and to women too.

A must-read for those considering the matrimonial plunge!
By A Customer
Okay, the book is still in galleys so I haven't acutally read the final cut yet, but I DID see the draft and, truth be told, lived down the hall from Jeff as he wrote his magnum opus. If the hackles coming from his room during the process were any indication, HE certainly thinks the book is funny!
In all seriousness, "Life Sentence" is a biting, satirical take on one of mankind's most hallowed rituals. Smith takes the "we" out of "wedding," intelligently and humorously dissecting the event from inception to conception. He finally offers a hilarious "must and mustn't do" account for those still convinced that they should take the plunge. A fun read!

Very Conise. Use as a Supplement in Your Research of Homeschool.
By D.R.Thomas
Synopsis:

This book is a quick reference guide for anyone considering homeschool; it covers some of the misconceptions and common concerns about homeschooling. Being general and concise it is a text that gives the reader a simple idea about homeschool, both initiating it and continuing it through and up to college. If you are considering homeschooling make this part of your inventory for investigating this avenue. The book, as said before, is concise, it is merely 178 pages long, but continues with three very salutary appendices constituting a homeschooling resource guide, homeschooling support groups in each state and lastly, a brief summary of state laws for every state. This book will get you started, but it should supplement your desire to understand homeschooling.

Pros and/or Agreements:

The appendices are, by my opinion, the most valuable asset in the book. This material is something that will give you a relative idea of where begin and some local resources in understanding your rights and different options you may have.

This book does not portray homeschool as the salvation of the human race, but does place emphasis on how it strengthens family bonds-which it does emphatically-and it even identifies that homeschoolers do have flaws, such as math being "an area where homeschoolers aren't knocking the ball out of the park" (79). This statement identifies that even though homeschool has statistically proven to outperform both public and private schooled children, it shows that they are not impregnable to some degree normality.

Praise must be given to them for their efforts of making the book somewhat secular. As it is known, we are a melting pot culture with a variety of spiritual and cultural paths, and even some are atheistic. Kochenderfer and Kanna do a very admirable job of relieving this book of Christian bias, which may disturb some fundamentalists, but it is a reflection that they realize that Christians are not the only culture who is attracted and interested in homeschool.

Cons and/or Disagreements:

Personally for me the context of the book is very murky, too concise and very general with a reading level for six years olds. This could be due to the brevity they take on each subject, and this possibly was intended to be the end result. To me this book does not make a convincing case for homeschooling your child which is why I said it should supplement your trek to understand homeschooling. Some other titles that should be considered as well are John Taylor Gatto's "Dumbing Us Down" (actually, any of Gatto's material is good, considering he was an exceptional public school teacher), Rick Boyer's "The Socialization Trap" (good theme on the socialization misconception, but some tangent arguments I disagree with), Sheldon Richman's "Separating School & State" (best book on the schooling theory that I have read) and Marlin Maddox's "Public Education Against America" (good review of some politics affecting schools, but some tangent arguments I disagree with).

This book does not place enough of emphasis on college. I will be the first to champion the FACT that one can learn better on its own with a passion for literature and love of wisdom, but unfortunately the masses does not have these qualities. I support companies moving toward requiring college degrees, because there is still much to learn. When I left high school the bulk of my knowledge was acquired from independent research, desire to learn and the love of literature, but as a current college student the structured environment has aided me in its on regard. Anyone who contends with furthering an education has no ground for argument, but if your argument is based on the fact that you can get the same or better education independently I both agree and disagree. The masses of this country does not read, and the ones that do usually are biased to a particular genre or subject, so those of us that read extremely diverse and abundant genres and subjects are even rarer, to me that is the true essence of acquiring knowledge-abundance and diversity. Nonetheless, continuing education for the public is a necessity and I support the rising climate change for collegiate education. Through furthering our education we make the Universe more intelligent; we make our music more intelligent; we make our movies more intelligent; we make our business more intelligent; we make our science more intelligent; we make our art more intelligent; we make our politics more intelligent; we make the whole of humanity and all of its creative byproducts more intelligent. This cannot be compromised, because Novelty needs stimulation to come into Fruition. Why do you think book burnings have such powerful symbolic imagery?!

Personal Opinion (Optional):

I have been homeschooling for two years now and there is now way I can deny the benefits. Personally, I think there should be a complete counter-culture against the assembly line education that is merely concerned with a "sellable" product rather a desired product. Explaining what homeschool affords the family is ineffable. For what I can place into words, the bonds of the family are strengthened to exponential proportions, which is not obtainable with traditional school. I am not saying that bonds are impossible in the public school scenario, I am simply saying to the extent that homeschool allows, because your children are at home 24/7, besides occasional activities and sleepovers. I have learned so much about my child, and because homeschool utilizes time efficiently and effectively there is plenty of time in the day for us to spend time together in play, exploration and in conversation.

The most common defense against homeschool is the ominous word "socialization." This is comical. Initially, since I was a public product (a defective one, my education came during my personal inclination for knowledge), I was concerned about this as well. After reading Rick Boyer's "The Socialization Trap" my opinion on the subject changed drastically. My children are three and six and they are the most sociable children I know. They are not weird. They are not shy. Actually the only way you can differentiate them and "normal" children is that their vocabulary will stand out in play. On the subject of socialization I do not think kids need other kids, this is some form of contortion that has arisen in our culture that I cannot fathom the origin of. In the real world we are exposed to and socialize with individuals of all ages and ranges of cultures and beliefs. We do not segregate by age, or sex for that matter, for a more productive and profitable workforce. On a holistic level I actually think kids need a more diverse social group, which is where they imprint behaviors from. My children are prominently around adults and carry some sophisticated behaviors and cognitions of the world, but at the end of the day they still play video games, with action figures, castles, trucks and cars, watch Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network...etc.; they are not antisocial fundamentalist robots.

One last note on socialization, I have can come to believe that how sociable the child is a reflection of how sociable the parents are. If the parents are closed-minded, pessimistic and paranoid then that is going to reflect a social defect in the child. We do not shelter our children. We are not highly social in the constitution of entertaining friends and going out to social events, but when we do participate in events like such we are very social, and the children obviously pick up on this. Also, if we go to a public event and our children show signs of hesitation (all children do at some point) we coach and encourage them in how to approach the situation, which actually is the most formidable action for anyone, especially adults.

As a point of recognition and suggestion I use "Home Learning Year by Year: How to Design a Homeschool Curriculum from Preschool Through High School" by Rebecca Rupp for a curriculum. I have used this since the beginning and it is the best secular curriculum out there, which is very hard to find. I employ several methods of the homeschooling theory; I use the traditional theory and the unschooling theory. The traditional approach is important on a holistic level; everyone should have foundations (I profess proficiency in each) in Math, Science, History and English, these avail us on an ontological level. The unschooling portion is a lifestyle where I show my children the interconnectivity of things in their lives and encourage them to investigate and research their interests, be it through internet research or reading books; unschooling for us is the pursuit of self-actualization and self-exploration.

I am not your stereotypical homeschooling parent; I am probably the anti-thesis to that: I am progressive, young, an atheist, college student, a reader (in an abundance and in an indiscriminate fashion of genre and subject), full-time worker, political radical (the two-party system is broken) and I am explicit (in some fashions); I homeschool because it is imperative to reconstitute the modern family; I homeschool because we need to preserve and propagate intelligence, not ignorance; I homeschool because public school is actually a welfare for those who cannot afford the time or intelligence to educate their own children, it is a public service/welfare; I homeschool because I want to assure my child goes to college and benefits the human race with more than just labor; I homeschool my children because I am a parent not an adjunct babysitter for the government's property; but in the end, in this REPUBLIC (not democracy), I have that choice and so do you. - D.R.Thomas

Homeschooling in a Nutshell
By A. L. Hermitt
Written by the founders of Homeschool.com, "Homeschooling for Success" is the most up to date and complete informational book on homeschooling available. It was printed in 2002, and is filled with un-dated viewpoints and findings that I could really sink my teeth into.
The forward is written by Robert Kiyosaki, author of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", who reveals that he was homeschooled by his school administrator father after he flunked out of school. This is the kind of information and reassurance I have been looking for. The book starts out with a real life example of what homeschooling can do for a person,as this man is now a famous and successful author and speaker, in spite of how the schools evaluated him.
The authors Rebecca Kochenderfer and Elizabeth Kanna have filled this book with all of the homeschooling resources known to man (also found on their website homeschool.com), as well as insight on learning styles and different kinds of intelligences to help a parent figure out which kind of homeschooling style, would best suite their child.
It gives advice on homeschooling at different age levels, as well as College and Un-college alternatives as well. Most importantly to me, it has a chapter called "Click Learning", which I felt was written especially for my family. My children have been using the computer since they were 18 months and I used it to help each child to read when the schools way merely frustrated them.
Finally the book ends with a chapter on "Why every Parent Should Consider Homeschooling". It was more based on emotional and religious reasons and thus fell short of giving me a good reason to homeschool as I am looking for academic excellence for my children in a loving environment. So although I already know I am going to start homeschooling soon, I still found the final chapter unconvincing.
All in all, the book is excellent. Having already devoured dozens of books and articles on homeschooling, this book kept me intrigued enough to read every single word as if it were the first homeschooling book I picked up.

Good, Helpful Overview
By Victoria Carrington
This book presented a very nice and not too overwhelming overview of homeschooling. Chapters featured a little something for everyone-from those homeschooling little ones to those removing their older children from school to homeschool them. Full of helpful resources, this book is a good start for anyone considering homeschooling.

Blonde Faith: An Easy Rawlins Novel, by Walter Mosley

Easy Rawlins comes home from work, and finds more trouble on his doorstep in a day than most men encounter in a lifetime.

A friend has left his daughter at Easy's house without so much as a note. Clearly this friend, Christmas Black, a veteran of Vietnam, fears for his life and his daughter's.

Easy's closest friend, the man known as Mouse, has disappeared too--and his wife tells Easy that he is wanted for murder. Mouse has been a thorn in the police's side for so long that Easy is convinced that this time they will kill him as soon as they find him.

Worst of all, Easy's longtime lover tells him that she plans to marry another man. In a world of hurt, Easy strikes out on his own to try to find one friend, save another, and save himself from the pain that is driving him out of his mind. On his path he meets drug dealers, corrupt officials, every manner of criminal and con--and a woman named Faith who may hold the key to more than one life.

In his tenth Easy Rawlins novel, Walter Mosley writes with a grace and insight that few writers ever achieve. It is the clearest proof yet that Walter Mosley is "one of this nation's finest writers" (Boston Globe).

Starred Review. Set in 1967, Mosley's brilliant 10th Easy Rawlins thriller finds the middle-aged Easy still fighting some of the same battles he fought in his first outing, Devil in a Blue Dress (1990), as an angry young WWII vet trying to make his home in postwar Los Angeles. His family has grown from none to many over the years, and now Easy is dealing with the loss of the love of his life, Bonnie, and his decision to make her leave him. Despite Easy's vulnerability and anguish, he's a staunch friend and a fierce protector of those he loves. Easy's two most dangerous friends, Raymond Mouse Alexander and Christmas Black, have both disappeared and both are being hunted. Easy must find them before those who want to destroy them do. Mosley knows his territory as intimately as a lover knows his beloved, and Easy's tortuous progression from man-child to man may have reached its climax in this searing and moving novel. (Oct.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
For 17 years, readers have witnessed Easy Rawlins’s evolution into a tough-minded, haunted detective navigating through a racially turbulent LA. A few critics surmise that Blonde Faith, the tenth installment, may be the last of the seriesâ€"and Easy certainly ruminates more on atonement and acceptance of life than in any other of the novels. Filled with melancholy, regret, and angst that may relate to finally understanding that his fate lies in his hands, Easy seemed tired to a few critics (and, consequently, a few chapters felt repetitive). Still, if Blonde Faith does not quite match Little Scarlet (**** Selection Sept/Oct 2004), one of the best of the series, and if it is the coda to Mosley’s chronicle of race relations between the 1940s and the 1960s, it is a fine end to a well-told story.

From Booklist
Mosley, a smart and daring writer, has tried his hand at everything from political essays to erotica, but his most anticipated books are those featuring the sleuth that made him famous: Easy Rawlins. In the tenth series installment, it's 1967 and Easy is emotionally on edge after learning that his true love, Bonnie Shay, plans to marry an African prince. A search for Christmas Black, a "village-killing" soldier and the adoptive father of an eight-year-old Vietnamese girl, and for the dangerous Raymond "Mouse" Alexander, Easy's oldest friend, provides distraction (and some relief, in the form of willing women), but Easy's need to reconcile his role in his relationship's end seems to trump even mayhem and murder. One of the remarkable traits of this series has been its portrayal of the sleuth not as a loner but as a man intricately connected with family and community. For Easy, who ages and changes with each book, the past is always present. For once, however, this web of connection tangles the storytelling. Amidst the frequent historical vignettes and righteous asides, we want Easy to scramble free and act. When he finally does, the conflagration feels almost pro forma. And, as with Cinnamon Kiss (2005), there's less connection to the historical moment. Here it's Vietnam, as Easy penetrates an army drug-smuggling ring unaccompanied by Mosley's usual penetrating insights. But if this extraordinary series is beginning to drift, there are indications that suggest Mosely may be thinking about wrapping it up. Graff, Keir

4.5 ...But Who Will Save Easy Rawlins?
By Chantay W.
Blonde Faith by Walter Mosley is the eleventh book in the Easy Rawlins mystery series and it is the book to read!

At the start of Blonde Faith, we find Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins, private eye, lost so to speak. What is a man to do when he has lost the love of his life to a prince? When Easy learned his former long-time girlfriend Bonnie had an affair with a prince, he pushed her away from his life and kicked her out of their home without fully resolving their situation. Now that Easy has learned Bonnie is to be married to the prince, Easy has to deal with his lingering feelings for her. He wants her back but his pride will not let him communicate his feelings for her. Now, if the emotional strain of his situation was not enough, Easter Dawn, child of Christmas Black, is placed into his care with no explanation of what to do with the child or what is going on. To add to that, his best friend of many years, Raymond "Mouse" Alexander, is wanted for murder by the police and they really want justice against the long-time killer who got away so many other times. So begins the journey of Easy Rawlins, off to save those in need but in the end, who will save Easy?

Walter Mosley makes number eleven shine with a sparkle that only he can create through prose. Blonde Faith is an intense mystery written magnificently. What readers will enjoy about this book the most, on top of Easy Rawlins doing what he does best, is the fact that there is such an emotional connection to Easy. There is a sense of the reader wanting him to focus on himself primarily more so than saving someone else. Easy is given chance after chance to save others and he will die trying to do this but when it comes to saving himself from emotional woes and getting back the woman he loves, he hesitates. Perhaps, it has to do with him not placing himself first, at least sometimes or when it is most needed. The ending of Blonde Faith was masterfully written and will definitely leave readers dangling in suspense for more! This book is recommended to fans of mystery novels, fans of the Easy Rawlins series, and fans who love to read good damn books.

Not his best, but not far off . . .
By Jeffrey Utter
The story is a little unfocused, but Walter Mosley is such a good writer that it's still a cut above 90% of anything else in this genre. While I can't say if his is an accurate depiction of black life in L.A. at the time, it sure "feels" accurate. I've always felt that Mr. Mosley has granted me a window into the black experience, and I'm grateful for that.

I also want to say that there are passages in his work that are so profound and elegantly stated that they leave me awestruck. The only other writer I can say that about is James Lee Burke, and that's pretty good company.

Screams to be read in one sitting
By Bookreporter
It is somewhat of a surprise to come to the realization that BLONDE FAITH is Walter Mosley's 10th Easy Rawlins thriller. It seems there have been more, far more. Rawlins quietly became an icon even as Mosley became both a role model for minority writers and an argument against giving African-American authors a separate but equal genre classification that intentionally distinguishes their work and unintentionally marginalizes it from a larger potential audience.

This is easily the best book in the series, which screams to be read in one sitting thanks to its flowing, unstoppable narrative. Mosley's storylines have always reflected the complexity of the life of his protagonist, a black man living in the southwest United States in the mid-20th century. With this new novel, Mosley streamlines things a bit, keeping the plot basic without sacrificing the richness of the tale.

BLONDE FAITH takes place in Los Angeles in 1967, where a city and political power structure remain uneasy in the aftermath of the Watts riots. Rawlins's life, somewhat turbulent even in the best of times, becomes more so when his two best friends suddenly go missing. Christmas Black, a Vietnam veteran, drops off his adoptive daughter at Rawlins's house without warning or explanation and is apparently on the run. Meanwhile, Rawlins's friend Mouse is being sought by the police for murder, and Rawlins is convinced that, due to Mouse's longstanding antagonistic relationship with the police, the authorities will not be taking any prisoners.

Even as Rawlins begins the dual tasks of finding Christmas and rescuing Mouse, he finds out that Bonnie, his longtime but estranged lover, is on the verge of marrying another man. This knowledge haunts and distracts him, even as he begins tracing Christmas's whereabouts and slowly but surely learns that the man who Mouse is accused of murdering is in fact alive and well and on the run himself. Rawlins comes to realize that his best shot at saving Mouse is locating the man Mouse supposedly murdered.

What is most interesting about this book is the manner in which Mosley quietly demonstrates to his audience (if not to Rawlins himself) that the things that have the potential to bring Rawlins his best chance at happiness are in his immediate grasp.

The conclusion is easily the most unique and shocking of any featured in Mosley's work thus far. Fairly unambiguous but leaving just a bit of wiggle room for a sequel, this is sure to be one of Mosley's most controversial novels to date, particularly among his longtime fans. It is for this reason, and all that comes before, that BLONDE FAITH is a must-read.

Amazon.com Review
The "Sex and the City" columnist for the New York Observer documents the social scene of modern-day Manhattan. The reader gets an introduction to "Modelizers," the men who only have eyes for models, as well as a more common species, the "Toxic Bachelor." Reading like a society novel gone downtown and askew, Sex and the City is a comically sordid look at status and ambition and the many characters consumed by the sexual politics of the '90s.

From Publishers Weekly
"We're leading sensory saturated lives," announces jetsetting photographer and playboy Peter Beard in a roundtable discussion of menages a trois, setting the tone of opulent debasement that suffuses this collection of Bushnell's punchy, archly knowing and sharply observed sex columns from the New York Observer. Prowling the modish clubs, party circuit and weekend getaways of rich and trendy New York society (most of whose denizens are identified by pseudonyms), Bushnell offers a brash, radically unromantic perspective. She visits a sex club and dates a Bicycle Boy ("the literary romantic subspecies" whose patron saints are George Plimpton and Murray Kempton). But in most chapters she keeps to the sidelines, deploying instead her alter-ego Carrie (like the author, a blonde writer from Connecticut in her mid-30s), whose sweet if feckless romance with Mr. Big?a nondescript power player?serves as a foil for the hilarious, unsentimentalized misadventures of her peers. These include model-chasers like Barkley, 25, a painter with the face of a Botticelli angel whose parents pay for his SoHo junior loft, and Tom Peri, the "emotional Mayflower," who ferries newly dumped women to higher emotional ground and is then invariably dumped. The effect is that of an Armistead Maupin-like canvas tinged with a liberal smattering of Judith Krantz. Collected in one volume, Bushnell's characters grow generic, but in small doses these essays are brain candy that will appeal equally to urban romantics and anti-romantics.

A disarmingly candid, greatly superificial, and charmingly quirky book
By Tom Benton
As someone who recently discovered (and became addicted to) HBO's delightful series "Sex and the City," it was inevitable that I'd wind up investigating Candace Bushnell's book. Bushnell's book is the collected form of the column she wrote for years before TV writer Darren Star turned it into a hit television series. Ironically, though Bushnell's book probably wouldn't get anywhere near as much attention if it weren't for the TV series, it's because of the TV series that it appears so many readers have had a foul reaction to the book. It's true that those expecting the TV show on paper are bound to be disappointed, probably in a big way, because Bushnell's "Sex and the City" doesn't have a lot in common with the show.

For the most part, the book does revolve around Carrie Bradshaw (a thinly-disguised alter-ego for Bushnell, with even the same initials), a thirty-something columnist in New York. Miranda Hobbes does show up a few times during the first half of the book, though she's not a lawyer. Samantha Jones is not a PR agent nor such a nymphomaniac as she was in the show. And Charlotte is a British woman, whose TV counterpart appeared at the beginning of the series' pilot episode. Stanford Blatch, Carrie's successful homosexual friend, is the only character who remains virtually the same, though here he's a screenwriter. Many of the same situations presented throughout the show pop up in the book, such as Stanford's obsession with his model "protege," the torment of the baby shower, and "modelizers." And those who loved Chris Noth's Mr. Big needn't worry. Big is a major character in the book and is just as adorable (and even less rambunctious) as he was in the show, though the outcome of he and Carrie's relationship is different in the book than in the show.

Bushnell's columns were meant more as musings on the life of single women in New York, and often single men as well, than as a linear narrative. Thus it's surprising that her writings work so well as a book. She has a very cute, quirky, innocent style of writing, and that's a big part of what makes her book such a blast. However Bushnell offers little insight into what any of the characters are actually feeling, and rightly so: it just accents their appalling and, frankly, upsetting superficiality. The dating scene in Manhattan is a hellish world where all that matters is sex, money, fashion, and drugs. Bushnell is obviously deeply involved in this world, and it's her knowledge of it, along with her characters' candid musings, that kept me reading.

In the end, those expecting the HBO series in a book are going to be very disappointed. Those expecting something resembling the HBO series will probably be let down as well. The book and the series are designed for two different worlds - while the show tended to have a sweet optimism to it, Bushnell writes with the same sort of dreamy, hopeful cynicism that one would find in a Bret Easton Ellis book. However, those who would rather read the book than incessently compare it with the show may enjoy it. I recommend Candace Bushnell's "Sex and the City" to those who are younger and looking for a fun, unusual, honest read.

Remember, the TV series was "loosely" based on this book
By Elizabeth
If you are a huge fan of the HBO series, (and if not, why not?), keep in mind that this book does not follow the lives of the four heroines as the show does. Carrie and Mr. Big are largely featured, as are the other ladies to a much lesser extent, but this book does not follow your typical story-telling format. Hardly surprising as it is a collection of articles.
Overall, I found the writing excellent and witty, but the format rather disjointing. It's a fun read with colorful characters. There is no depth to them, but shallow seems to be the key theme in Bushnell's examination of the Manhatten single scene. If you are looking for love in the Big Apple, you may find this book either a) full of helpful hints or b) so depressing you want to run home to Connecticut. I enjoyed it, but it's easy to put down and forget about.

Don't Expect the Series, But Worth a Read
By Kate
Being a huge fan of the TV series (like most people reading this, I'd imagine), and looking for something somewhat fluffy to read, I ordered this book and quickly finished it.
The thing that struck me most was how *empty* the book felt. Whereas the characters on the TV series have some very close friends, the book doesn't really have that dimension. Sure, people go out with their fabulous acquaintances, but there never really seems to be a true connection among them. Lonliness is nearly a constant with the characters in this book. It left me feeling pretty sad, as well. Yes, it was comical, but it also had a fairly serious side.
For fans of the series, this book is *not* told solely through the eyes of Carrie. The narrator is someone else, a "friend" of Carrie's and the other characters, who does indeed write a newspaper column. Most of the characters in the TV series are in the book by name only -- for example, Charlotte makes an appearance as a journalist with a completely different personality thank Charlotte in the series. And whereas I think most people genuinely like at least one person from the series, I think I finished this book disliking every single character. What did surprise me is that the first episode of the series is nearly verbatim from the book.
What I liked about this book were the vivid scenes and the ability to create a feeling. I think Bushnell did a great job and making her audience feel what the characters feel. While it's not the series, it's certainly worth a read.

One of the last people to see Gary Winthrop alive is Washington anchorwoman Dana Evans. Amazon.com Review
Dana Evans, who made her first appearance in Sidney Sheldon's The Best Laid Plans, is a spunky, good-looking, young Washington TV journalist who's recently returned to the nation's capital from the Balkans, where she adopted a handicapped war orphan who's having trouble adjusting to life in America. But that doesn't keep Dana from following a story all over the world, from Washington to Aspen, Nice, Juneau, Dusseldorf, Rome, Brussels, Moscow, and Siberia. Each of these brief visits is like a postcard--a local landmark or two, an interesting local restaurant (at least in the European venues), and another piece of the puzzle, which has to do with why every member of a venerable, old Washington dynasty has died a violent death in the last year. It seems strange that in a media-savvy city like Washington, no one but Dana has noticed there's a pattern in the rapid extinction of the Winthrops or even whispered the words family vendetta. But that's why pretty, young girl TV reporters were invented, at least by Sheldon.

As Dana sets out to investigate the distinguished career of the Winthrop family patriarch, her lover Jeff, a sports anchor at her station, is called away to administer aid and succor to his former wife, a beautiful model who's realized, too little and too late, that she never should have dumped him. And Kemal, the 12-year-old orphan, is being drugged by his baby sitter, who's in cahoots with at least one set of bad guys. Dana hasn't noticed how tractable the temperamental boy has become recently because she's been dressing up like a two-bit Russian tramp to infiltrate a secret weapons base in Siberia... Do you hear the words movie locations? But all's well that ends well, as it usually does for Sheldon's heroines, and in the meantime you've learned where the five-star hotels are and what to order in a famous restaurant in Rome. A slick, commercial, slightly thin tale told by a craftsman of the genre. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Efficiently brisk and reliably suspenseful, Sheldon's (Tell Me Your Dreams, etc.) 17th novel demonstrates that this veteran master of commercial fiction has not lost his touch. Freshly returned to Washington, D.C., from a stint reporting in Sarajevo, TV newscaster Dana Evans (introduced in Sheldon's The Best Laid Plans) struggles to cope with her new adopted son, troubled 12-year-old Kemal, whose parents and sister were killed in the fighting. Back on the job, Dana interviews youngish millionaire Gary Winthrop, the scion of a Kennedyesque clan, only to learn the next day that the prospective Senate candidate and philanthropist has been murdered in his Washington townhouse. Unbelievably, Dana is the only person who finds it odd that five members of the Winthrop family have died violent deaths in the last year. Despite this weakness in the plot, Sheldon crafts a page-turner that takes Dana on a worldwide quest from France, Germany and Italy to Alaska and Moscow as she pursues her hunch that all the Winthrop deaths are related. Deceased family patriarch Taylor Winthrop, she discovers, was a manipulative, unscrupulous businessman, politico and womanizer with many enemies. And the senior Winthrop's connection to the real-life Siberian underground city of Krasnoyarsk-26 and its production of plutonium proves the source of the family's wealth and their ill fortune. A love triangle involving Dana, sports anchor Jeff Connors and his ex-wife, internationally known model Rachel Stevens, seems gratuitous, tossed in merely to add plot texture, but it does provide some viable moments of romance and schmaltz. When the villains behind the killings turn against Dana as she comes closer to the truth, the tension builds and holds right through to a seven-alarm finale. From Library Journal
This latest novel from Sheldon (The Best Laid Plans) probably won't have much chance of being selected as an Oprah Book Club choice (hers are certainly more thoughtful, character-driven picks), but that won't stop it from being in demand by most library patrons. The book has pretty flimsy character development, a feeble plot line, and an ending that hardly surprises. Yet it works. From the first page, the reader is caught up in the snappy and suspenseful chapters, which become inescapably addictive. Dana Evans is a television reporter with an apparently unlimited travel expense account who finds it peculiar when all five members of a very wealthy and highly regarded family meet untimely and violent deaths. Her investigation soon confirms her suspicions, uncovering not one but three strong motives for murder. Eventually, her search leads her to top-secret Russian and U.S. agencies dealing with the production and sale of nuclear weapons. Needless to say, her probing for the truth doesn't go unnoticed, and soon she is running for her life. The last few chapters neatly resolve all the intrigue, including secondary story lines involving her adopted son; her fianc , Jeff; and a shaky relationship with her mother. A certain purchase for any public library fiction collection.

Sidney Sheldon has done it again. He has written another great novel. It was hard to put down. It was spellbinding and mesmerizing. The characters are real and the dialogue is well written. I was not disappointed when I finished it, except that it was over. I highly recommend this to everyone!!!

This is part of a series.
I love the main character. I love adventure genre and this fills the need. It is not perils of pauline, it is more a build to a climax.

One of the best series in current urban fantasy (4.5)
By R. Kyle
Kitty Norville, werewolf and radio talk show hostess, seems to be doing very well. Her new book "Underneath the Skin" is just about to be released, her radio show "The Midnight Hour" is still a big success, and she's now got her own boyfriend--and built in pack in Ben.

Then she gets the call from her Dad. Her Mom's got breast cancer and is due for surgery. She and Ben drop everything and head back to Denver.

The old saying "you can never go home" is literally true for Kitty. Her old werewolf pack, led by Carl and Meg, is in Denver. If she returns, Carl will consider it an invasion of his territory and act accordingly.

Add to that, Kitty's approached by her friend Rick the Vampire. Rick's planning on taking over the city of Denver from the current Master Vampire, Arturo. Will she take sides with him in exchange for protection?

As usual, Carrie Vaughn has created a pageturner. "Kitty and the Silver Bullet" kept me up til 2:00 AM to finish.

In my opinion, Ms. Vaughn does some of the best world-building in urban fantasy today. She's taken very logical steps with cause and effect to generate some very plausible scenarios in how a post-paranormal world would develop. In "Kitty and the Midnight Hour," Kitty's radio show introduced the world to paranormals. Following in logical order, "Kitty Goes to Washington" has Kitty lobbying Congress to get vampirism and lycanthropy acknowledged as diseases to obtain research funds and help for sufferers. In this book, she carries that to its next logical step. Denver, CO is going to have a Paranormal Division in its Police Department and Detective Hardin is going to head it.

Her character development is also stellar. Kitty starts out as a beta wolf, abused by her pack leader, Carl. Now, she's a strong woman, capable of helping other victims and taking care of a pack of her own.

Plotting--well, let's just say you need to have the time to finish the books when you sit down to read them because they're hard to put down. Ms. Vaughn puts very likable characters into some serious situations and makes you want to know what's going to happen to them.

"Kitty and the Silver Bullet" is the 4th in the series. What I particularly like is each novel is stand alone in relation to a particular issue, but there are continuing life issues for Kitty and the other characters. Below is a list of the three previous Kitty books in order. They are all well worth the read.

Kitty and the Midnight Hour (Book 1)
Kitty Goes to Washington (Book 2)
Kitty Takes a Holiday (Book 3)
