From Publishers Weekly
A balanced view and comprehensive scope distinguish this guide to eight leading alternative health care approaches: traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda (Hindu healing), homeopathy, naturopathy, mind/body medicine, osteopathy, chiropractic and massage therapy, or body work. For each, Collinge, the clinical supervisor of a California cancer support center that utilizes mind/body therapy, adeptly explains the underlying principles, describes the techniques employed and highlights the available scientific studies. He also poses and answers a series of questions on each method's strengths and weaknesses, its cost, how it relates to other forms of medicine, what to expect from the practitioner-patient relationship and how to go about choosing a practitioner, e.g., what training and credentials to look for. Concise case studies of patients who have had success with the methods are interspersed throughout. While demonstrating a distinctly positive attitude toward each of these alternative approaches, Collinge does not denigrate the practice of Western medicine, a stance that lends even more authority to this solidly informative compendium, which includes an extensive bibliography. From Library Journal
Combining well-referenced scientific evidence with case reports, Collinge, a clinical supervisor at a cancer support center that uses mind-body therapy, explores the efficacy of eight types of healing systems: Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, homeopathy, naturopathy, mind/body, osteopathy, chiropractic, and massage/body work. Arguing that "no single tradition has all the answers," he emphasizes the growing importance of integrative medicine.

From Booklist
Collinge describes the key principles, strengths and limitations, and costs of, and advises on choosing a practitioner for, eight types of alternative medicine: Chinese, Ayurveda, naturopathy, homeopathy, mind-body, osteopathy, chiropractic, and massage therapy and bodywork. The role of nutrition figures extensively in several of the eight, and Collinge is also informative on the varieties and the major groupings within each type (he does, however, overlook the National Association of Chiropractic Medicine). The text includes many brief case histories and reports pertinent studies funded by the new Office of Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. Pointing out that "clearly no single tradition has all the answers," Collinge stresses the growing importance of integrative medicine. Many libraries will want to add his overview to reference as well as circulating collections. William Beatty

Each year, millions of consumers visit their family physician. Often this experience leaves them with frustration, fear, and unanswered questions. Their dissatisfaction has led many to seek out other forms of health care.
Alternative medicine has been practiced for centuries - and today its acceptance is skyrocketing. The use of alternative medicine allows the consumer the freedom to choose what type of health care they feel would help benefit their illness. They can become experts by reading a book, surfing the Internet, or attending a local seminar.
In THE AMERICAN HOLISTIC HEALTH ASSOCIATION COMPLETE GUIDE TO ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE, readers will discover a more in-depth look at the various alternative therapies of Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, naturopathic medicine, homeopathy, mind/body medicine, osteopathic medicine, chiropractor, massage therapy, and bodywork.
One of the key elements of this book that I found so fascinating was the use of true-to-life success stories of people who had tried one of these time old methods and found it cured or helped with what ailed them. It even gave me the opportunity to learn the benefits and the cost of each one of the treatments. This book has been a wonderful resource in helping me write my college thesis paper. I feel anyone who is looking for a better understanding of any or all of these alternative therapies will not find a more informative book.

Thorough yet very accessible guide to alternative medicines.
By A Customer
Collinge takes the "hoodoo" out of alternative medicines and provides a very clear and practical guide to the various treatments.
His inclusion of case studies is particularly effective in demonstrating what one could expect from a form of treatment.
A very worthwhile reference for anyone concerned about health

The Essential Vitalim of Naturopathy Clearly Iterated!
By Robert J. Cullen
So, I applaud the author for his description of naturopathy as "vitalistic", as based on "the vital force", that naturopathy's "homeopathic remedies are natural substances used to strengthen the body's vital force (life force, life energy)." And so on regarding the underlying science-ejected premise of naturopathy.

Clarity is welcomed, particularly c1996.

Little Girls in Pretty Boxes: The Making and Breaking of Elite Gymnasts and Figure Skaters, by Joan Ryan

From starvation diets and debilitating injuries to the brutal tactics of tyrannical gymnastics guru Bela Karolyi, "Little Girls in Pretty Boxes" portrays the horrors endured by girls at the hands of their coaches and sometimes their own families. An acclaimed expose that has already helped reform Olympic sports -- now updated to reflect the latest developments in women's gymnastics and figure skating -- it continues to plead for sanity, safety, and an end to our national obsession: winning at any cost.

Sports columnist Ryan presents an expose of the physical and psychological suffering endured by young Olympic hopefuls.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
YA?In an attempt to focus attention on the high price paid through pain, pressure, and humiliation to become an Olympic champion, Ryan has researched the stories behind some of the young female superstar gymnasts and figure skaters. The extraordinary cost to these young women in body, mind, and spirit is dramatized through the intense subculture dominated by gyms, trainers, parents, and sports officials who press for excellence and success without regard to the health and well-being of those involved. This anecdotal account serves as a warning to all those engaged in competitive sports that children should not be sacrificed to adult egos and the thrills of victory. A book to be pondered by coaches, parents, and young people.?Mary T. Gerrity, Queen Anne School Library, Upper Marlboro, MD
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Ryan, an award-winning columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, offers disturbing anecdotal evidence indicating that women's gymnastics and figure skating are physically and psychologically damaging to a majority of participants with realistic Olympic aspirations. Ryan's emphasis is on gymnastics; figure skating is a cutthroat sport, to be sure, and it encourages bulimia, but compared to gymnastics, it's almost pristine. Ryan documents that between the years 1976^-92, the average U.S. Olympic gymnast became a year younger, six and one-half inches shorter, and 23 pounds lighter. The sport not only attracts tiny girls, it manufactures them: these days the demanding physical requirements of championship women's gymnastics can only be met by prepubescent, very light, very flexible girls. Control their weight through intimidation, delay the onset of puberty via exhaustion and starvation, and voila{ }! You've got little girls forever. But by delaying puberty, one also inhibits the production of estrogen, which is essential for adult bone density. There are now former gymnasts in their twenties with the bone density of 90-year-olds. Equally damaging is the obsession with weight passed on to young gymnasts by their coaches. Onetime Olympic hopeful Christie Henrich weighed less than 50 pounds when she slipped into a coma in July_ 1994 and died. Ryan portrays the gymnastic training of Olympic hopefuls as systemic, sanctioned child abuse. It's a nightmare vision that may forever change one's image of those herculean efforts by such Olympian pixies as Olga Korbutt and Mary Lou Retton. Expect this shocking expose{‚}to attract major media attention. Wes Lukowsky

EENY...MEENY..TEENY...WEENY...
By lawyeraau
This is a terrific book on the state of woman's gymnastics and, to some extent, figure skating, though the primary focus of the book is on gymnastics. It focuses on the enormous demands made upon these young athletes by coaches, trainers, officials, and parents. Some of those demands are so unrealistic as to border on child abuse. There are athletes who are starve themselves, who develop life threatening eating disorders, who perform dangerous maneuvers in the quest for the gold, and who sometimes end up dead or devastatingly injured as a result.
There is a lot of backstage dish in the book that is interesting. True life stories, some of which are heartbreaking, flesh out the allegations asserted by the author. The emphasis on being tiny and elfin has had enormous impact on elite female gymnasts. One sees the difference in just by looking comparatively at the women's U.S. Olympic gymnastic teams from 1976 and 1992. The photographs in the book best illustrate this and the comparison bespeaks volumes. Elite gymnastics went from being a woman's sport to a girl's sport, as the author has sagely noted, and the photographs corroborate that assertion.
Moreover, while some measures have been taken, such as raising the age for Olympic competition in 2000 from fifteen to sixteen, at the same time the minimum level of difficulty has increased, making an already dangerous sport more dangerous. Remember, elite gymnastics is a sport fraught with the potential for devastating spinal cord injuries. The author recounts a number of these heartbreaking injuries and the circumstances under which they occurred, leaving the reader to ask oneself, "Just what were these coaches thinking?
The pressure that some of these girls and young women endure is truly unbelievable. The demands upon them are often unrealistic, stunting not only their physical development, but their social and emotional development, as well. Competing with serious injuries, while taking potent drugs for the excruciating pain, is simply not commensurate with a sensible athletic regimen.
Parents who are living their dreams through their children are often as dangerous as unscrupulous and unqualified coaches. Many force their children to compete merely to satisfy their own desires for personal glory, badgering and berating their offspring every step of the way. Coaches, likewise, have their own dreams. Everyone wants to produce Olympians, but at what cost?
This is a an excellent book with a lot of information, both anecdotal and empirical. When purchasing the book, however, be sure to get the latest edition, as it has been updated with information on the state of gymnastics as of the year 2000. It also contains 24 pages of photographs, including 8 new pages for the updated edition.

The truth always hurts
By M. Jay Babb
As a gymnastics fan, there's always been two sides of me: On the one hand I enjoy watching little girls flip over, and fly in the air-things that you and I would never think of trying our selves. On the other hand-I've been concerned over the years about what these girls go through to make it to the elite or olylimpic levels. In 1994 when Christy Henrich died as a result of eating disorders. That's when I begin asking some serious questions about the sport.
One thing that needs to be made VERY clear: Ryan was NOT dealing with what is called recrational gymnastics, Doing gymnastics for fun and fitness. It can be a rewarding sport for chidren. What Ryan DOES deal with is the elite or olylimpic levels of the sport.
It documents the disturbing training methods of Bela Karloli. I've been concerned about this for a long time-but now the truth is told-and the truth hurts. It also documents the belittling coments that coaches often say to the gymnasts about weight. This often triggers an eating disorder. This is sickening. Coaches like Karloi would just like to blame parents for these problems. While parents do play a role, it's the coaches coments made to gymnasts that triggers it. So coaches needs to held reponsible for it.
Ryan tells it like it is-she pulls no punches. This is not an anti-gymnastics book. It's instead a disturbing document of the training methods of coaches and forcing them to compete with injuries.
Then there's the disgusting story of the second Trial that was held to determine the 1992 olympic team that resulted in Kim kelly being voted off the team. Kim Kelly did not have the Ideal body type of a gymnast-and USA Gymnastics(Then called United states gymnastics federation)were concerned that she would not get high enough scores because she was not the little girl like the others were. This is WRONG and lets hope that it doe not happen again.
This edition includes an update on the state of gymnastics up to 2000. While progress has been made in making the sport safer, Ryan notes that there's a long way to go.

Shocking, yet informative
By Kelley A. Bergamo
I liked this book from the minute I picked it up to read it. I just couldn't put it down. I had no idea what these girls go through just to win an Olympic medal. Those coaches, whose names I won't mention, need to be ashamed of themsevles. If they could see the lives they ruin with their abuse, maybe they would stop and think. If you think you want to put your child into ice skating or gymnastics, read this book. You may change your mind...

Needed more explanation and fewer ingredient recipes for a male student who has done very little cooking at home. I added many notes to the recipes, e.g. substitutes, things to omit without changing taste or quality, etc. I even included
some simple family recipes, since he is not interested in becoming a "good" cook.

In this follow-up to The Lion's Game, John Corey, former NYPD Homicide detective and special agent for the Anti-Terrorist Task Force, is back. And, unfortunately for Corey, so is Asad Khalil, the notorious Libyan terrorist otherwise known as "The Lion." Last we heard from him, Khali had claimed to be defecting to the US only to unleash the most horrific reign of terrorism ever to occur on American soil. While Corey and his partner, agent Kate Mayfield, chased him across the country, Khalil methodically eliminated his victims one by one and then disappeared without a trace.

Now, years later, Khalil has returned to America to make good on his threats and take care of unfinished business. "The Lion" is a killing machine once again loose in America with a mission of revenge, and John Corey will stop at nothing to achieve his own goal -- to find and kill Khahil.

From Publishers Weekly
Asad Khalil (aka "The Lion"), the ruthless Libyan terrorist who menaced ex-NYPD cop John Corey in The Lion's Game (2000), returns to the U.S. 18 months after 9/11, bent on finishing old business in DeMille's fast-paced fifth John Corey thriller (after Wild Fire). In Los Angeles, Khalil dispatches the last of the eight American pilots who dropped the bombs that killed Khalil's family in the historic 1986 raid on Tripoli. In New York City, a daring encounter with Corey, a member of the federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force, and Corey's FBI agent wife, Kate Mayfield, who's also a member of the ATTF, sets the stage for the mano a mano struggle both Corey and Khalil crave. DeMille splices gripping action scenes with accounts of Khalil's horrifically inventive attacks and the ATTF's futile countermeasures. While Corey isn't much more appealing than his foe, those who enjoy starkly black-and-white battles between good and evil will be satisfied.

From Booklist
In The Lion's Game (2000), terrorist Asad Khalil, also known as the Lion, came to the U.S. to kill the people responsible for bombing his village in Libya. John Corey, the NYPD cop turned antiterrorist agent, and his FBI trainer, Kate Mayfield, gave chase, but their quarry got away. Now it's a few years later, not too long after 9/11. John and Kate are married, and John's an experienced agent with his own trainee. Out of the blue sky—literally, in a very creative and exciting scene—Khalil swoops down, bent on continuing his revenge against the people behind the bombing. And now he's added Corey to his hit list. Can Corey outmaneuver and outwit a determined, ruthless assassin? This is a well-constructed and satisfying sequel, full of exciting (and occasionally gruesome) visual imagery. Corey is a more developed character this time around, and Khalil is every bit as intelligent, cold, and compelling as he was in The Lion's Game. If the book has a flaw, it's that it might be a little close in feel, plot, and even dramatic structure to the earlier book. On the other hand, Khalil is a single-minded guy, and it doesn't stretch credibility at all to imagine that he'd pick up right where he left off. --David Pitt

DeMille in good form!
By Philly gal
No spoilers here. John Corey, the ex NYPD homicide detective who now works for the Federal anti terrorism task force is the main character. This is DeMille's fifth John Corey novel (Plum Island, Lion's Game, Night Fall and Wild Fire). You do not have to read these novels to enjoy this one although DeMille does make references to events in those earlier books.

This story is set in NYC thirteen months post the 9/11 attacks. Corey is working alongside his wife Kate Mayfield an FBI agent. In a terrifying, suspenseful scene involving a skydiving trip, they encounter the Libyan terrorist Asad Khalil. DeMille presents the motivations of both Corey and Khalil; unusual for this type of thriller you can actually understand the roots of Khalil's terrorism. Events move along quickly following the initial meeting. The action is centered in the metro New York area and exploits the difficulties the federal/state/local agencies have had cooperating and sharing intelligence information. Corey stands above the bureaucracy and has a singular focus on bringing down the terrorist. The characters in this novel are engaging, funny and sharply drawn. Corey is non-stop with the wisecracks, I find them funny and occasionally laugh out loud funny but I can see how some readers might be annoyed by the frequency of these comments. I think you either like the Corey character or you don't.

This is a top-notch action thriller. Differing from some of DeMille's earlier novels, this one is tight and well edited coming in at around 400 pages. The novel gathers in the reader with a strong opening, the plot is well organized and believable, the ending a little abrupt. I think DeMille fans will be pleased with this installment in the John Corey series and no doubt staying up late to finish this thriller.

He's back -- and on game!
By emmejay
And by "he" I mean both John Corey (former NYPD and current loose-cannon agent on the federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force), *and* Nelson DeMille (author extraordinaire of political suspense and hilarity, whose last couple of books started to worry me about the extraordinaire part).

DeMille's 16th book (the fifth in his John Corey series) is a post-9/11 sequel to The Lion's Game. Here it's 2003 New York City and Asad Khalil is back to finish his revenge against the 1986 U.S. military attack on Libya that killed his mother and siblings. And to finish John Corey.

But that's enough said about the plot ... which, whether it's terrorism, conspiracy, or the KGB, isn't really why I read DeMille. I read him for his smart-a**, alpha-male-with-tender-underbelly protagonists. And while a few sections here are by necessity in the third-person perspective of other characters, they thankfully aren't like the long stretches in Wild Fire. Instead, the majority is first-person Corey -- narrating more of a police procedural than rollicking thriller, a slower pace that immerses us in Corey's amusing persona. Also making their usual appearances are Corey's love interest (wife Kate Mayfield), the good guys of New York's Finest, the bungling FBI, and the evil CIA. Though readers new to DeMille might more logically begin with Plum Island (the first in this series and still the best), DeMille gives enough background here for anyone to enjoy this work. (With a caution: there are several brief scenes of graphic violence.)

The novel's pacing is good, its length is great (not bloated like The Gate House) -- and its final four sentences are perfection.

Needs a better editor
By Amazon Customer
As a Nelson DeMille fan I hoped that this novel would be better than his last. Alas, it seems that his success has inflated his ego to the point where his writing has suffered. This book is awful. The hero, John Corey, comes across as Bruce Willis in a poorly scripted and totally unedited action film. The book is hundreds of pages too long. Sections which may be entertaining on first reading become tedious as they are repeated and repeated. When you get to be a famous author do you abandon editors or do the editors simply become sycophants helping to stroke your ego? The plot is predictable and not worth the read. Perhaps if Mr. DeMille pays attention to the readers' reviews he will take a critical look at how his writing has deteriorated. Once an excellent author he should strive to regain that position.

Mach IV Pageturner
By Mr. Bookwrench
24/7 blood-boiling action from beginning to end. I'm a mega-fan of the genre, have read about everything there is out there, and this is--no doubt about it--one of the best. Agent David DeLuca and Team Red are unrivaled in fresh, creative ways to get results. Big Dig go boom? It out-24's 24!!! Bravo.

Unbelievable
By Christopher
Wow. I'm almost speechless. Almost. I've been an active Army Counterintelligence Special Agent for over 6 years, and reality is SOOOOOOOOO far from this nonsense that I passed the first book around to the other CI agents I knew and we laughed for days. 2 years later, and my friends and I still laugh about how ridiculous it was. Special Forces don't even do half the stuff DeBatto or DeLuca (I keep having to stop and laugh and shake my head at the thinly-veiled self-aggrandizing exploits of "our hero") and his "elite" team do in every book. And last I checked, CID (Criminal Investigation Division) Special Agents handle things like murder. Counterintelligence agents investigate possible occurences of espionage, sabotage, subversion, sedition, or deliberate compromises of classified information. Never shall the two be confused. Only the Navy and the Air Force combine the two. To whomever decides, through simple ingnorance, to read any of the CI: Whatever books, please don't get impressed by what you read; its just a very tiny bit of truth mixed with whopping doses of misplaced desires, fabrications, delusions, and outright lies. Truth hurts in proportion to its veracity. (I wouldn't have given it even one star, but I had to.)

Life-changing and Never Outdated
By Teresa Wenner
The title of this book would steer many people the other way. After all, who wants to admit that they have a serious problem with having a big mouth? It took a serious life event to cause me to realize that my mouth was sometimes causing me more trouble than good. As always, Joyce Meyer has a remarkable way of speaking truth in a way that convicts rather than condemns. Her use of scripture to support her statements was spot-on. Using this text along with the accompanying study guide has been life-changing for me and even though it is not one of Joyce's newer creations, it contains timeless truths and is well worth the read! From Library Journal
Actor Paul Rudd deftly narrates this fascinating story of author Turow's experience as a first-year Harvard Law School student. Moreover, Rudd's voice sounds remarkably like Turow's, who provides an introduction. Personal narratives written by successful, famous persons should have to pass a humility test in which all references to entrance exam scores, grade point averages, and collegial or professional honors are stricken from the text, and editors' jobs should depend on how well they apply that test. The editor of this production would receive a solid A-. Even though we know he goes on to fabulous success as both a lawyer and a writer, Turow's initial ego is beautifully subdued by the end of his year as a "One L."?Mark Pumphrey, Polk Cty. Review
“The most accurate, complete, and balanced description yet of a century-old rite of passage in America.”—Baltimore Sun

“A sensitive, dramatically paced account of the author’s first year at Harvard Law School...I read the book as if it were the most absorbing of thrillers, losing track of the time I spent with it, and resenting the hours I had to be away from it...It should be read by anyone who has ever contemplated going to law school. or anyone who has ever worried about being human.”—Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times

Great and insightful read.
By itsztiffy
Great book! I found myself sitting in Scott Turow's shoes feeling the emotional, and often literal, ebbs and flows he experienced during his first year at Harvard Law School. This book reads like a fiction novel but the fact that it is non-fiction makes it an even better read and has helped me mentally prepare for the infamous "One L". I'm glad I bought this book and recommend it to any potential law student wanting to get an idea of what One L is like.

Incredible story of an incredible experience! Very thoughtful and thought provoking.

Very enjoyable trip through Harvard Law School
By Amazon Customer
Having been through law school (though not Harvard), I found that Turow's book was a pretty good description of what law school is like. I think he gives adequate warning that his experience might be different than the average students (and I don't think most students are that excitable), and overall it was a very enjoyable read.

Things have changed too since the 1970s (when Turow was in school). Professors are not quite as harsh (though there are some that are) and the internet has changed legal research quite a bit. But overall, the book does a good job of capturing the anxiety and stress of the first year of law school. I enjoyed it.

This book should not be your only source of information
By Big Foot's Mom
I'm only giving this book 3 stars because I think someone needs to temper the other reviews with some common sense.

This book is a good starting point for anyone dealing with or concerned about hypertension, but before investing in and ingesting all of the supplements recommended on pages 132-133, I think a person needs more information from additional reputable sources to be certain they fully understand the risks and benefits of taking any of these nutrients in supplemental form. There are risks of adverse side effects and toxicity from supplements that are not there when you get what you need from the foods you eat. Those risks vary with things such as your age, pregnancy, illness, surgery, and medications you may be taking, not just the dosage. Each person's circumstance's are unique, so these recommendations should not be considered one-size-fits-all. I don't think this book emphasizes enough how important it is to keep your doctor current about any herbs and supplements you are taking and in what doses.

Below is some of the references I use to better understand the functions and risks of all of the nutritional supplements out there. They will open your eyes about how cautious you need to be about any supplements you take.

You don't have to suffer from headaches.
By D. R. Schryer
Most people seem to regard headaches as a natural consequence of the stresses of life. I used to think this way myself -- one or more headaches were a weekly occurrence for me. Then I began to learn about the importance of vitamins and minerals in human health and starting taking nutrient supplements including magnesium and B vitamins. Since then my headaches have virtually disappeared.
One of the major causes of headaches -- including migraines -- is deficiency of magnesium, which is a natural relaxant. And studies have found that about 80% of Americans don't get enough magnesium in their diet. The result is that Americans suffer inordinately from headaches (including migraines), muscle cramps, and various forms of anxiety and stress disorders. But magnesium deficiency --which causes these ailments -- is easily remedied by taking supplemental magnesium. The preferred form of supplemental magnesium is chelated magnesium because it is readily absorbed by the body and because other forms of magnesium supplements sometimes cause diarrhea.
As pointed out by the authors of this book, the B vitamin niacin and the herb feverfew are also helpful in preventing and treating migraine headaches. If you suffer from migraines -- or any form of headaches -- please read this book. And, to help optimize your health, be sure you get enough magnesium and B vitamins as well as other essential nutrients.

A Life-Saving Primer
By A Customer
Dr. Mark Houston has created a "must-read" for the nearly half of the American adult population dealing with high blood pressure. Today, more than ever, it is critically important that we as medical consumers have a fundamental understanding of the nature of our health issues and the choices available to us. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Hypertension gives us the ability to make an informed decision in partnership with our physician.
Pharmaceutical companies make untold millions of dollars each year dispensing anti-hypertensive drugs. Certainly, these medicines save lives and extend quality of life for millions of people.
But if given a choice, how many of us would rather take a natural approach? It is refreshing and reassuring that a respected medical researcher like Dr. Houston is presenting these options to us in a way that we can implement. Dr. Houston and his collaborators have also done a great job in making complex scientific information both easy to understand and interesting.
This book is perhaps the best gift for a friend or loved one who you know has high blood pressure and is not doing anything to successfully reduce it-an estimated 60 million Americans today. You may help them prevent the walking time-bomb of premature death and disability from stroke and heart disease.

From Publishers Weekly
Chicago defense attorney Turow, formerly a U.S. prosecutor, capitalizes on his intimate knowledge of the courtroom in an impressive first novel that matches Anatomy of a Murder in its intensity and verisimilitude. With the calculating genius of a good lawyer (and writer), Turow, author of the nonfiction One L, draws the reader into a grittily realistic portrait of big city political corruption that climaxes with a dramatic murder trial in which every dark twist of legal statute and human nature is convincingly revealed. The novel's present tense puts the reader firmly in the mind of narrator Rusty Sabich, a married prosecuting attorney whose affair with a colleague comes back to haunt him after she is brutally raped and murdered. Sabich's professional and personal lives begin to mingle painfully when he becomes the accused. His is a gripping and provocative dilemma: "Sitting in court, I actually forget who is on trial at certain moments. . . . And once we get back to the office, I can be a lawyer again, attacking the books, making notes and memos." Turow's ability to forge the reader's identification with the protagonist, his insightful characterizations of Sabich's legal colleagues and the overwhelming sense he conveys of being present in the courtroom are his most brilliant and satisfying contributions to what may become a literary crime classic. 125,000 first printing; $125,000 ad/promo; movie rights to Sidney Pollack; Literary Guild dual selection; author tour.

The writer has a nuanced mind and a good understanding of psychology. The emotional impulses attributed to his characters never seemed forced or gratuitous.
