With the proper care you can have fabulous skin in your forties, fifties, sixties and beyond," promises author Nicholas Perricone, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine. In his opening chapters, Perricone explains why skin wrinkles and sags--a combination of factors including the passage of time, stress, poor nutrition, excess alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation, and exposure to cigarette smoke, sunlight, and pollution. Ultimately, however, it all boils down to damage caused by those renegade free radicals.

The bulk of his book is then devoted to a clearly presented skin care regimen that involves oral and topical antioxidant therapy. On the oral front, he emphasizes eating antioxidant foods, such as cantaloupe and dark green leafy vegetables, and avoiding "bad carbohydrates" (high in the glycemic index) such as pasta, sugar, and pancakes. And if you want to look good for a big event within a few days he suggests eating "fish, fish and more fish."

On the topical level, he recommends nutritional skin products such as his DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) cream ("an instant anti-aging face-lift"), a product that can only be purchased at specific places, such as selected Nordstrom stores or www.Sephora.com. "The Wrinke Cure," has what everyone wants! This book contains all the proven information for maintaining and obtaining youthful skin but the benefits do not stop there. Guidance on diet, exercise, and nutritional supplementation for feeling recharged in every way is included. Most importantly, this is an easy and enjoyable program for everyone, including a busy professional like myself, to follow. I am sold on this program and, after trying it for a short time, can honestly say that I recommend it highly to all of my friends and family. (Oh yes! I feel wonderful too!)

I picked up The Wrinkle Cure in a bookstore recently...I was just having a leisurely browse. However, I knew I had picked up something that I must read and heed. The doctor gives wonderful hope, scientific insights, and specific resources for achieving and maintaining beautiful skin for a lifetime. I read the book from cover to cover....and then I put into action his suggestions for internal and external nourishment for the skin. It has been a successful experience. Thank you Dr. Perricone!

A Series Like No Other

The full title of the book is From The Borderlands: Stories Of Terror And Madness. But in truth, that title is misleading, for it is neither terror nor madness that make a story a Borderlands story. Even the title of the original version, Borderlands 5: An Anthology Of Imaginative Fiction, hints only at the imaginative aspect of what makes a Borderlands story.

To me, the thing that truly makes a story a Borderlands story is a pulling back of the edges of our perceptions of what is real and what is safe. A Borderlands story takes you to boundaries you never knew existed, then pulls back the curtain and lets you glimpse what lies beyond. Sometimes it can leave you with a sense of wonder, more often with a sense of unsettling dread. But it never leaves you the same as you were before you started.

My personal favorites in this anthology, in which I consider myself fortunate to be included, are:

"Rami Temporalis" by Gary Braunbeck. Ever think you have "one of those faces"? Maybe you do. But Braunbeck's concept of why this might be so is supremely unique and leaves one awed by the sheer scale of the idea.

"All Hands" by John Platt. If you're like most people, you take your hands for granted. You shouldn't. You really shouldn't.

"The Food Processor" by Michael Canfield. Who says all fables must be set in a non-technological past with magic and talking animals? This could've been written by Aesop... if the ancient Greeks had had industrial food processors.

"Answering The Call" by Brian Freeman. Think your job is bad? The worst ones are the ones we never see. Freeman will show you one you'll wish you didn't even know existed.

"Smooth Operator" by Dominick Cancilla. Think that losing your wallet means having to worry about identity theft? There are worse things, things you never imagine. Cancilla shows you the absolute worst. This one still has me checking for my wallet.

"A Thing" by Barbara Malenky. There are pains and suffering of people's lives so great we block them out. But sometimes there are things for those pains and suffering. Malenky takes us deep inside one person's suffering... and then shows us a thing.

"The Planting" by Bentley Little. If you know Little, you know he's going to take you to one of those boundaries I spoke of, open the door, and then shove you through. This story is no exception.

"Magic Numbers" by Gene O'Neill. Lots of people obsess over numbers, letting their compulsions and superstitions determine their actions. But like the old Indian said, "Sometimes the magic works..."

"Head Music" by Lon Prater. We think we're human, but sometimes we discover connections to things that aren't. And some of us don't turn away.

"One Of Those Weeks" by Bev Klein. There are rhythms, circles and patterns in life we don't know about. And are probably better off not knowing about. Reminded me a lot of T.E.D Klein's "Ladder", another classic Borderlands story that has stayed with me over the years.

"Stationary Bike" by Stephen King. You'd be surprised how far you can go on one of those things. And where. And who you'll meet along the way. You may even get a souvenier.

The other stories will no doubt find readers for whom they will be the favorites. There is something in this anthology for everyone. And now all I can do is wait for the next one in the series, because the Borderlands anthologies are the only place I can be sure of finding them.

Hors d'oeuvres rather than a seven-course dinner

In this volume as in previous volumes (notably If It Ain't Broke...Break It! co-authored with Louis Patler in 1992 and Sacred Cows Make the Best Burgers co-authored with David Brandt in 1996), Robert Kriegel offers a title, subtle, clever chapter titles, and a few insights that attract attention. That is not easy to do, especially now when there are almost 300,000 books in print that address many of the same issues Kriegel does.

Out of curiosity, as I read each of the 27 chapters, I attempted to formulate a key point or guideline for each, given the chapter's title. I found this to be an especially useful exercise, not because I learned anything new; rather, because I was reminded of what I already knew but tend to neglect. For example, without having as yet read the book, what do these chapter titles suggest to you?

"Rushing Slows You Down"
"Try Easier"
"Joe DiMaggio Never Bunted"
"Think Like a Beginner"
"Odd Couples Make Perfect Partners"

The chances are that what you come up with in response to these chapter titles is quite similar to what Kriegel recommends.

Of course, you already know that haste often makes waste. Kriegel observes that as a result of the emphasis on speed, "everyone has shifted into high gear, rushing, racing, and running. The workplace has been inflicted with hurry sickness. It's full-tilt boogie time. No slow dancing allowed. What's the problem? You're thinking. You want speed; you've got to speed up." Right? "Wrong! Speed doesn't come from rushing. The opposite is true. Rushing actually slows you down." This is only one example of several hundred observations that Kriegel shares throughout his book.

Note: Presumably William Shakespeare had a Latin expression in mind ("festina lente," make haste slowly) when he has Norfolk express this concern in Henry VIII:

"We may outrun
By violent swiftness that which we run at,
And lose by over-running."

My suggestion to those who consider purchasing this book (currently for only $11.66 from Amazon and Borders online) is that they read various of Kriegel's books and then take advantage of the opportunity to sample some of the actual material in one or preferably several of them. Kriegel's style is not for everyone, nor is all of his advice immediately relevant to each person's own needs and interests.

We all know that there are times when we have to work "damn hard" and even then, the results are not always satisfactory. We also appreciate the importance of speed while recognizing that haste can "make waste." Of course, Kriegel knows all this. He has worked "damn hard" to develop his own career. I know him only by reading his books. He comes across as a dynamic, hard-charging, and charming person with a lively sense of humor. Never dull. Sometimes enlightening.

As other reviewers of Kriegel's various books have also suggested, however, he offers no head-snapping revelations and tends to recycle many of his unconventional opinions without developing them in depth. Stated another way, Kriegel offers more advice than analysis. If you need some thought-provoking perspectives and cage-rattling opinions on career development and especially productivity, this book could offer what you seek.

But if you need help with identifying and then addressing root causes that are limiting your success in business, there are other, more substantial sources to consider. For example, Tom Rath's recently published StrengthsFinder 2.0. Those who purchase a copy have exclusive access to a Web site (i.e. [...]) at which valuable diagnostic exercises and results analysis are available - at no additional cost -- from the Gallup organization.

If you still think you have to hammer yourself to get ahead, stop doing two things at once and listen to Robert J. Kriegel. The author, an expert in human performance and the psychology of change, says most people work too strenuously at a frantic pace that generates stress and reduces performance. You can perform better if you work smarter, even at 80% or 90% of your current buzz. If you've read human potential success books, some of this will sound familiar, but Kriegel focuses on becoming successful while having a full personal life. He quotes managers and employees, and outlines exactly what you should do. You're on your own figuring out what a 90% effort amounts to, but if you're a mid-level manager or executive who likes Kriegel's idea of winning-by-easing-up, we recommend that you somehow find the time to read his book.

an incredibly invaluable resource

I've had Parkinson's for a few years now, and, at age 51, have the ignoble distinction of being among those deemed "early onset." This book was among the first I bought when I was diagnosed, and stayed in the pile of books doctors and medical associations were gracious and generous enough to give me. Once I got to it, however, I quickly realized it is among the best. Descriptions, definitions, explanations... All are presented in clear, straightforward, easy-to-understand language, all are thorough without getting long-winded, and all are compassionate without being sappy or unrealistically "everything will be great." I appreciate the even-handedness of both her allopathic and holistic treatment descriptions, not offering much in the way of criticism nor over-the-top praise, just presenting the many options available. In glancing through the table of contents as i write this, to refresh my memory, i find it hard to really encapsulate this book, it is so packed with useful information. Like, how to find a great doctor. Suffice it to say that, from my experience and my belief in balancing both western and alternative medicine, this book is invaluable, for patient, friends, and family.

This is by and far the best book that I read on the subject of PD. It is comprehensive, written by a PD specialist, is easy to read, considers many treatment options, and is reassuring. Parkinson's Disease is so frightening that many people, including doctors, think that little can be done about it; this book shows you why that is not so and provides information so that you can control your disease and still live your life.

In decades of reading science fiction, I haven't found anyone quite like Octavia Butler. The skill with which she introduces us to an entirely new kind of people is unparalleled. So, too, are the complexity of her characters.

While avoiding spoilers as much as possible, this book features a unique take on genetic mutation - and the most unlikely, and compelling pair of lovers I have ever seen.

Butler writes with easy acceptance of the role DNA plays in our identity and our deeply ingrained need to be social creatures.

Fantasy at its best...

It is always a delight, when reading science fiction, to come across a writer who can actually WRITE. As soon as you begin Wild Seed, you know that you are in the hands of someone who knows what she is doing. I was turned onto Octavia Butler by reading Orson Scott Card - who cites her in his book on Writing Science Fiction. The book is, in the best sense, literary.
The story reads like a version of the X-Men set in the past. Imagine Dr. X forced to marry Magneto. Doro and Anyanwu are both immortals. Anyanwu can die, but she goes on living indefinitely. Doro dies quite frequently - merely inhabiting a new body the moment he does. Therefore Doro cannot die. He finds the shape-shifting woman Anyanwu in Africa in the seventeenth century and brings her to one of his "seed villages" in America. There, he has gathered other mutants with special abilities for the purposes of breeding them in the hope that he may, one day, produce another mortal like himself.
Butler avoids many of the clichés which science fiction and fantasy are prone to. The resultant novel is a thoroughly enjoyable read with memorable characters. Things are not resolved by a tidy little shoot-out at the end.
My problem with the mass-market paperback is that, in several places, there are glaring errors: lines are repeated, etc. Wild Seed deserves a better edition.

Simply amazing

Not so long ago I've read the first book from Ms Butler. I was immediately captivated by her amazing imagination and quality of her prose and became instantly a fan of the author.
All her books showed a rich mixture of imagination, interesting characters and conflictive situations.
*Wild Seed* is a complex story about Doro and Anyanwu, two extraordinary beings, their encounter and relationship expanding over three centuries.
I refuse to say Doro is a male, he may acquire any physical nature, so I think the character as a Self, each reader may assign he/she/it any attribution. This trait only, is enough to arouse many questions and situations, other writers may stick only to the rich action line. Octavia doesn't, she dig deep into each character, giving them soul and flesh, going into what they feel, their ethical (or unethical) considerations, their whole conception of life, their struggles for power and love.
All this blended in an inspired story full of action. A very commendable book.

A Fun historical romance

In Julie Anne Long's TO LOVE A THIEF, Gideon Cole is trying to woo the woman of his dreams, but instead finds himself falling in love with a pickpocket.

Gideon is a barrister, but tends to take on cases in which clients do not have much money to pay him with. In order for Gideon to secure a title and wealth, he needs to marry up, and Constance, who is beautiful and wealthy, is his ticket. He isn't just after her money, however. He truly believes she's the right woman for him and he thinks he loves her. And since his Uncle Edward, who is supposedly on his deathbed, is to pass on his estate to Gideon, Gideon feels he should look good in Constance's eyes.

Lily is the pickpocket that Gideon saves from going to jail, and he makes a bargain with her. He and his best friend Laurie (Lord Kilmartin) will coach her until she is presentable in society, and with her help, he will win Constance's heart by making her jealous.

It's a variation on the Eliza Doolittle story, and for me it worked. I enjoyed the characters and their shenanigans as they (and Lily) fooled society. Lily becomes the toast of the town, and of course Gideon finds himself infatuated by her. Lily also finds herself falling for him, but both know that this is a romance that can never be, as they are from different worlds.

Lily's young sister Alice is also a charming addition to the story, and as usual a child in a historical romance makes for a welcome subplot. Lily and Alice are orphaned, and so it is Lily who is looking after her ten-year old sister. Lily makes her living as a pickpocket because there was no other way. But stepping into Gideon's world makes her own world look even worse, and she dreads the day she and Alice will have to return to it.

For those who enjoy regency romances, I recommend TO LOVE A THIEF. It's funny and charming and the author did a good job describing the world of Regency London. It was a definitely fun book to read.

Male Opinion On Best Purchased Book!

First, a disclaimer: I am a male, a husband and father whose customary literary fare is epic fantasy novels and civil war biographies. I have read a few romance novels before such as Danielle Steel's Legacy and Sisters (one of my favorites by her), Lisa Kleypas, Mary Jo Putney, and a bunch of others. After finding 'To Love a Thief' on my kindle and at a bargain price of $0.99 - I opted to give it a try.

I read the entire thing in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. I found myself actually liking the male character, he was an honest fellow, loyal to his family and friends, and was downright adorable making Alice (Lily's younger sister) feel at home on his estate. The female protagonist was whip smart and probably the most honest thief around. It's hard to dislike a female protagonist that has found love but is willing to sacrifice it to make her lover's dream come true which entails marrying a wealthy heiress that would lift his family out of debt.

I loved reading this book so much I also bought several of her other books!

A funny, touching, steamy and wholly entertaining Regency!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Julie Anne Long! This book is a treasure! My husband teased me because I carried it everywhere around the house with me so I could read it whenever I had a free moment. He said it was the first book since we've been married that I didn't ask him if he knew where I'd left it because I never put it down! In my opinion it surpasses Long's first romance "The Runaway Duke", which was my favorite book of last year. Long outdoes herself and is proving to be a unique and talented new voice in Regency romance. She is a master at developing charming, unique characters that you remember long after you've read the last page. The "intimate" moments between her protagonists are tender while being heated and lush at the same time. Even her antagonists are interesting and sympathetic in their own way. Gentle humor pervades her work, and she is quickly becoming my favorite romance write. The heroine and hero in this book, Lily and Gideon, are two of my favorite literary characters in recent and far memory. And I can see Lady Constance so clearly in my mind's eye! Her character is painted so vividly by Long's words. I wish Long wasn't so new so that she had a body of work that I could dive into while I await her next book.

Going to read all Laurie Graham's books - fun!

Fun book to read! Loved the main character in the beginning, then began to loathe her, but soon loved her again towards the end - just a product of the time/situation. I could have done a better job of editing this book, though - some big errors (maybe the online translation though)

The Great Husband Hunt

I truly loved this book. Couldn't put it down and wanted to keep "Poppy" going. But, it has been published under the name:
"The Undesirables" and a different cover, which I'd bought. Imagine my surprise, when I'd ordered some additional books, by Laurie Graham and received, "The Great Husband Hunt", to be one and the same. That was annoying!

Don't be misled by the cover

This is not a romance! The title and photo on the cover could mislead you. But this is a clever book, a marvelous character read. And I loved it. I think Laurie Graham has captured the ultimate eccentric spirit in Poppy, who is modeled somewhat on Peggy Guggenheim, according to Graham's interview at the end of the novel. (By-the-way, author Graham now resides in Venice, the home of the Peggy Guggenheim Museum.)
I am reminded of the Mitford novels and biographies, not Jan Karon, but Nancy Mitford, i. e. Love in a Cold Climate, The Pursuit of Love, Don't Tell Alfred. And of the Five Sisters: The Langhornes of Virginia. There is even a taste of the absurditiy of AbFab of BBC TV.
For certainly Poppy has genuine feelings, as expressed by her loss of her father and the confusion over his double life, and she belabors her having been controlled by her mother and her aunt. But she is a strong and willful rich woman, a mustard heiress who seems to have no sense of conventional behavior at all, especially as it concerns her daughters, or husbands. She buys her way through life, but it isn't all despicable. In fact, her ways as an avant garde originator/fashion designer, and discover and seller of art, are not so foreign to those who actually fill that world even today. Witness the emergence of design of all kinds in the world of cable TV channels and realize what entertainment value it must provide to not only stay on the air but multiply and clone itself into more and more programming.
There is a definite message in this journey the reader takes with Poppy at the helm, and it is the importance of one's family after all. In addition there is a sense of history, as in the effect of world events on culture. But the humor and oddity in the story line keep this from being a maudlin tale. The whole set of characters is no more eccentric than any other good novel, often a Southern tale. But the mix of Jewish and Christian culture with the art world and the world of the wealthy makes for a fun read. Poppy is an addictive flower of a protagonist, both reprehensible and sympathetic.

This latest Preston and Child thriller, even in abbreviated form, offers gore galore, mutilations, bizarre ritual murders, an obstreperous sheriff, a young woman in jeopardy, a town consumed by terror and a spooky local legend-in short, an abundance of traditional suspense novel ingredients. Compensating for this apparent lack of imagination is the thriller's remarkable hero, Special Agent Pendergast, who's on leave from the FBI. This somewhat ethereal, cerebral specialist in macabre murders is a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Mulder of The X-Files, but with his courtly Southern manner and combat expertise, he's very much his own man. Narrator Auberjonois, a familiar stage and screen presence, uses an appropriately silky accent and a playfully sarcastic tone for Pendergast. Auberjonois is equally successful with the other characters, especially the hard-headed but good-hearted Sheriff Dent Hazen, who emerges as a Wilfred Brimley minus the bluster; 18-year-old town rebel Corrie Swanson; and the killer, whose method of communication would challenge any vocal interpreter. Equally important, Auberjonois narrates the tale with the sort of mesmerizing intensity that can, and does, turn a fairly familiar yarn into a scary campfire chillfest.

The authors of such hits as Relic (1992) and The Cabinet of Curiosities [BKL Je 1 & 15 02] bring back Special Agent Pendergast, the FBI man whose slightly archaic dialogue, unique mode of dress, and seemingly endless array of esoteric facts make him a fascinating lead character. This time out Pendergast is in Medicine Creek, Kansas, a small town that appears to be home to its very own serial killer. The novel begins with a gruesome murder, after which we're introduced to wily Sheriff Dent Hazen, a man who doesn't take kindly to out-of-towners investigating crimes on his turf. Just as we're getting to know Hazen, the pace kicks into high gear, with more bodies and a full-tilt investigation. As usual, Preston and Child deftly mix the real and the surreal, creating an atmosphere in which everything, for reasons we can't quite nail down, seems a tad off-kilter. Call it creeping paranoia, perhaps, or the dreadful certainty that something awful is about to happen. Whatever you call it, it's a recipe for success. David Pitt

Not their best, but still pretty good

I've been a fan of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child since "Relic", and during that time I have come to expect quality writing, great characters, tons of plot twists and bizarre, unexpected endings from them. Generally speaking, "Still Life With Crows" lives up to those expectations, but the ending unfortunately falls short, and the resolution leaves some troubling holes. That's not to say this is a bad novel, but fans of the authors may find that it doesn't quite live up to their expectations.
Set in a small town in Kansas, "Still Life With Crows" has a creepy vibe from the very beginning that the authors superbly develop over the first two hundred pages. All too often, novels set in small towns are replete with stereotypes that detract from the story. Preston and Child, however, have written their best characters yet as they capture the full spectrum of small town Americana. From the sheriff is a wonderfully complex character who brilliantly plays the part of a typical rural sheriff even as he masks a deeper, more thoughtful man, to the aging local newspaperman, who is no less sophisticated than his big city counterparts, the authors weave a tapestry that draws the reader in.
At the same time, Preston and Child exercise their considerable gifts for descriptive writing. Their ability to capture the still, oppressive heat of the plains and to imbue sprawling cornfields with a latent menace is admirable. Moreover, as the town of Medicine Creek falls prey to a murderous rampage, the authors create their most genuinely scary settings since "Relic". The murders are performed in an oddly ritualistic fashion that haunts the town even as they defy explanation by traditional means.
Thus, it is no surprise that the authors call upon their familiar protagonist, Special Agent Pendergast to save the day. The difference this time is that he plays a larger role in this book than in any of his prior appearances. Thus, it is up to the authors to develop him to a much greater extent, and they do so quite successfully. It would be regrettable, but not surprising, if Pendergast took on an almost superhuman aura, considering the huge variety of his considerable faculties. Fortunately, Preston and Child have made him a true Renaissance man, but a man nonetheless; he is not superhuman, and has human flaws and frailties just like anyone else. At the same time, the authors have filled his background with mystery and regret that add to his personal legend even as they reveal other information. Thus, after four books, Pendergast is both better developed and more mysterious than he was when he first appeared in "Relic" which is no mean accomplishment.
The other difference with Pendergast this time around is that he takes on an assistant in the form of a local misfit teenager, Corrie. While this may sound horribly hackneyed, it was actually quite effective, and her development and the relationship with Pendergast were both well executed. In fact, I would go so far to as to say that Corrie is one their best character's to date, and the rare well written teenager (authors all too often get stuck in stereotypes when writing adolescents).
Unfortunately, all of this excellent stage setting and character development falls somewhat flat in the end. As the murders become more bizarre, and Medicine Creek teeters on the brink of oblivion, it is obvious that there is something unprecedented happening, possibly something that is tied to an Indian massacre in the 1870's. As the characters run down blind allies, fracture and then come together in the caves honeycombing the county, the reader is drawn into a nightmare scenario that is impossible to put down. However, when the climax is finally reached, it is too convenient at best, and it leaves a lot of questions unanswered. For example the source of the killer's preternatural strength and speed is hinted at, but never answered effectively, and the bizarre tableaus are addressed, but in a manner that seems contradictory to other information about the killer. My final complaint is that there are two or three chapters that reference events from "The Cabinet of Curiosities", and hint at an upcoming sequel, that are nothing but marketing. They add nothing to the story, in fact they distract from it, and they serve only to allude to future plotlines. I'm honestly surprised that an editor would let them through, and I hope this isn't a trend for authors whom I've come to respect.
"Still Life With Crows" isn't a bad book, in fact most of it is quite good. As I alluded to above, the authors' writing, and particularly their characterizations, continue to improve with each novel. Moreover, with this novel they have proven themselves masters of ambiance, as they deftly ratchet up the pressure and sense of ominous foreboding. Nonetheless, a book must be judged as a whole, and the conclusion of this one just isn't up to what I've come to expect from these authors. Is it awful? No, not by a mile. Did I enjoy reading it? Yes, and it's much better than most popular fiction you're likely to find. Did it live up to the high expectations I have for Preston and Child? Unfortunately no; one of the reasons why Preston and Child are among my favorite authors is because their plot twists inevitably lead in completely unexpected directions. And while their twists are better than ever in "Still Life With Crows", their denouement leaves something to be desired. This one is worth reading, but not their best.

A change of pace...

I really enjoy this series ! I started a few years ago with Book of the Dead, and was heartbroken to discover it was the "end of an 8 book series". After some time passed, and running out of good fiction from my usual authors, I searched for the original books on Amazon. I promptly bought the first few books. This one is a nice change of pace from the first three books, all set or occuring around the NY Museum of Natural History. While I find the museum to be fascinating in itself, it was nice to leave the dusty halls for a different outdoor setting. This book took Agent Pendergast into small town America, placed him opposite a good but somewhat stereotypical sheriff, and made things happen. The miles of corn became as suffocating as the author intended, and the trips into the cave were creepy enough to be what the reader expects from this series. I think they waited too long to introduce the cave, however, and there were some excellent surprises waiting at the end. I am looking forward to the shipment of book 5 !

I have now read all of the 5 books with Pendergast in them, and I have found each one better than the last. True, this book was a little different from the others. This is not a bad thing, however. This book will give you a more diverse look at the authors AND Pendergast as a main character (which is my favorite part of the book) However, do not pick this up if you have not read Relic, Reliquary, and Cabinet of Curiosities. You will be able to follow it, but it will not have the flow that it is intended to have. This is in many ways a continuation of Cabinent of Curiosities, or this is how I saw it. While the story line is ALMOST wholly independent from Cabinent, Pendergast is not, and a few chapters will not make sense. Also, as the main character, he is somewhat odd. His perspective is almost never taken and even when it is, its distant and you cant really get to know him. That takes the previous books. So, I strongly suggest, again, that you read the other 3 books preceeding this one. Then the main character will make MUCH more sense and the book can be enjoyed as it is supposed to be.
