Great little book for those curious about or just learning of the Holy Spirit
By Millie
This is such a great little book I decided to use for my small group study right after we finished Joyce Meyer's book, "How to Hear God's Voice and Make Right Choices".

I had download it on my kindle app way before I decided to use it for my class. It is a VERY short read- maybe 146 pages?? 8 Chapters and truly pocket sized. Joyce explains it as a pocket guide for keeping as you venture into the promise and fulfillment of the often misunderstood third person of the Trinity, The Holy Spirit.

Pros:
In my opinion, it is written for the Christian that is curious about being "Baptized" or filled with the Holy Spirit and has not been taught who or what it is. She explains perfectly the old testament vs new testament Spirit of God and the gift of the Holy Spirit given to each of us by Jesus. She perfectly explains the controversy about the power and gifts given in Acts. Depending on your denomination, some believe (cessationists), that the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit ended with the Disciples and Apostles of old. She gives clear explanation, proof, biblical references and reasons why the gifts are not only still available for us through the Holy Spirit, but increasing as the bible prophecies.

In true Joyce Meyer style, she outlines also why the church as a whole has been tarnished by those abusing this gift for their own personal gain. She truly packs a huge teaching of soup to nuts in this little book for the beginner. I really wish this had a study guide companion! It is so good!

Some points of interest:

I will start by saying I chose this book over even Billy Graham because she gives her personal account of when and how she received the Holy Spirit and when she received the gift of tongues. As I wrote above, she carefully cautions the reader about each gift and potential abuses. I can relate to her that after I received my "prayer voice", I was consumed with this strange new language coming out of my mouth. When writing this book, Joyce Meyer may have had this in mind also. My complaint about this book is that if you have a "hang up" about tongues and you really are curious about surrendering to The Holy Spirit, the book devotes a great deal to the "tongues" gift. All of it is great material for once you have it and it is usually the confirmation that one has truly been filled with The Holy Spirit. Another small complaint is that some people never receive the prayer voice and reading this book may make them feel "tongues" is all there is to the gifts. She does clarify everything I just complained about in the book. There is only one chapter devoted to all the gifts, including the tongues. Then the best stuff is really at the end.

Conclusion:

The best part of this book is it is simple and not confusing. Other than a little heavy on the tongues, this book is absolutely perfect for introducing The Holy Spirit and also for mature Christians that may have been taught incorrectly about the power and gift of the Holy Spirit. I can include myself in that category as I learned fantastic biblical truthsChapter 8 ties the gifts and the fruits, including Love! It is really exceptional. Even the conclusion is a great part: "What are you waiting for?" I would highly recommend this to any level of believer. Joyce Meyer never dissapoints!!

The perfect book for ANYONE at ANY AGE!
By A Customer
I purchased this book about a year ago and have read it a number of times. I had gone to the gym with my husband in the past and felt intimidated by all the machines and felt self-conscious using them in front of other people. My husband, who has been lifting weight for years would set up routines for me, but he would give me so much to do, I would feel overwhelmed and would be extremely sore the following day --- never wanting to lift a weight again! I originally bought this book because it gave instructions for a workout that could be completed in the privacy of my own home. What I loved most about this book is that it assumed the reader knew absolutely nothing about strength training and went from there. The author takes the time to define common terms and explains which muscles are being worked in each exercise. This book also gives suggestions as to which gym equipment will work those same muscles if you do decide to go to a gym. The author also takes the time to explain which machines are superior to free weights and which machines are a waste of time. The book contains many pictures and explains very specifically how to do each exercise. This book even has different routine schedules depending on how much weight you have to lose from what Joyce refers to as "skinny-fat" to obese. This book gave me the knowledge and the confidence to go to the gym and set up my own routine. Thanks to this book, I know when it's best to use a machine and when I would be better off jsut using dumbells. I am 27 and only had about 10 pounds to lose. I have been working out between 3 and 4 times a week now for the past 10 weeks. For the first few weeks, I will admit, it did not come easy. I still dreaded going to the gym. After about four weeks, when I was getting frustrated with the scale showing no progress, I noticed some small muscles in my upper chest. A minor change, but nonetheless encouraging! After the 5th to 6th week, my clothes started to fit differently. After only 10 weeks, I am noticing some definate changes. I have muscle tone in my arms, shoulders, and chest that I have never had before (even when I was in high school and playing sports!) I still refer to the book weekly to give me inspiration. Thank you Joyce!

Great starter, with a few small problems
By Amazon Customer
After looking at what seemed like a bazillion intro to weight training books, I chose this one -- and I'm very pleased. Joyce's style is funny, and motivating, and I just LOVED the before/after photo section. The only problems I've had are 1) I agree -- it does take longer than she says to do the workout, and 2) I'm having trouble with figuring out the correct form for the back exercises -- I wish there were a few more pictures with most of the exercises so it would be easier to pick up the correct form. But I would still recommend this to anyone who was looking for a book on intro to weight training -- Joyce is great! I look forward to graduating to her other workouts.

Wild Fire (A John Corey Novel), by Nelson DeMille

Welcome to the Custer Hill Club--an informal men's club set in a luxurious Adirondack hunting lodge whose members include some of America's most powerful business leaders, military men, and government officials. Ostensibly, the club is a place to gather with old friends, hunt, eat, drink, and talk off-the-record about war, life, death, sex and politics. But one Fall weekend, the Executive Board of the Custer Hill Club gathers to talk about the tragedy of 9/11 and what America must do to retaliate. Their plan is finalized and set into motion.

That same weekend, a member of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force is reported missing. His body is soon discovered in the woods near the Custer Hill Club's game reserve. The death appears to be a hunting accident, and that's how the local police first report it, but Detective John Corey has his doubts. As he digs deeper, he begins to unravel a plot involving the Custer Hill Club, a top-secret plan known only by its code name: Wild Fire. Racing against the clock, Detective Corey and his wife, FBI agent Kate Mayfield, find they are the only people in a position to stop the button from being pushed and chaos from being unleashed.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Set in October 2002, bestseller DeMille's can't-put-it-down fourth thriller to feature ex-NYPD detective John Corey (after 2004's Night Fall) involves an American right-wing plot to suitcase-nuke two U.S. cities. The idea is to provoke an existing government plan called Wild Fire that automatically responds to nuclear terrorism in the homeland with a nuclear attack that will wipe out most of the Middle East. That such a plan probably exists, according to an opening author's note, heightens the tension. Corey and his FBI agent wife, Kate Mayfield, set off to find antiterrorist agent Harry Muller, who has disappeared after being assigned surveillance duties at the Custer Hill Club, a rich man's hunting lodge in upstate New York. John and Kate are a wisecracking, affectionate, deadly duo, with a new resolve born in the tragedy of the World Trade Center bombing. This tour de force of relentless narrative power neither stops nor slows for twists or turns, but charges straight ahead in the face of danger. (Nov.)

From Booklist
John Corey, the ex-NYPD detective who now works on a government anti-terrorism task force, returns in this exciting and uncomfortably realistic thriller. Bain Madox, a brilliant and probably insane villain, has hatched a fiendishly clever plot to force the U.S. to launch an all-out nuclear attack against the entire Islamic world. It's up to Corey, with the help of his FBI agent wife, to stop Madox before he can detonate nuclear weapons on American soil. Set in 2002, barely a year after 9/11, the novel presents a what-if scenario that's so plausible we have to remind ourselves that DeMille is making the whole thing up. Or is he? As usual, DeMille appears to have done a ton of research; what sets his thrillers apart from those of some of his competitors is the way he seamlessly incorporates real technology and real government organizations into his stories. It really is tough to tell what parts of his novels are real and what are the products of his imagination. And although Operation Wild Fire, the American nuclear retaliatory strategy that Madox hopes to jump-start, is fictional, DeMille makes us believe that something very like it could and possibly does exist. Review
Scott Brick's tones of irony and sarcasm for the wisecraking Corey and quieter tones for the more even-tempered Mayfield make it seem as though there are two narrators at work.

Nelson DeMille is one of my favorite writers & I love the John Corey series
By ALC
Nelson DeMille is one of my favorite writers & I love the John Corey series. I like how DeMille's books relate to an actual event in history, and this one takes place after 911. There are parts of the book where it just seems to drag along, but overall, I really liked it. Especially towards the end. A few interesting twists. I have read other reviews and the comments about John Corey's wisecracking attitude and one liners getting a little old. Well, personally, I love it. I am always on the go, so I listen to the Audible version, and the reader, Scott Brick, does a great job of portraying John Corey. Corey has the New York accent, along with a bit of an attitude & a little cynicism (a lot actually...but you would too if you were a cop), so when you hear all of that together, and Corey says his one liners and makes his wisecracks, it's actually pretty amusing. I especially love it when Corey talks about 'bears'!

In my opinion, if you have a good reader like Scott Brick, then listening to the book really brings out each character, and makes you feel like you're right there with them. My only complaint is when Scott reads the part of Kate Mayfield (or any other woman)...would be better if female characters were read by female readers.

So for those of you who get think that Corey's one liner wisecracks become a bit tiresome, try listening to the book...you may enjoy it...especially when Corey talks about 'bears'...

Nelson DeMille has the best plots!
By Steven W.
I'm a recent fan of this genre, and after reading everything published by Lee Child, Michael Connelly, Robert Crais, Michael Koryta, etc. I discovered Nelson DeMille and he might be my favorite of the bunch.
With many books, the journey is better than the final destination, in other words enjoyable reads with a so so payoff. I go back to those authors repeatedly because they're a good time but Nelson DeMille is a cut above when it comes to plotting. I'm on my 5th John Corey book of his now and it's electrifying. But best of all, I'm truly confident that it's going to have a satisfying ending too.
Structure matters every bit as much as cool characters, so this is a truly sincere 5 star rating from me.

Entertaining book to read.
By David B. Van Otten
Entertaining book to read. DeMille continues on with the escapades of his smart aleck detective and his wife to avoid an international tragedy. He works hard to build to a plausible climax and it kind of works except for one character that was killed in the preceding book. He could have left that out and had a more plausible plot. The weakness of the plot is that the main characters could have built in some additional backup along the way even though they didn't trust most people. But good still a good enough read that I will read this again sometime!

Review
For those interested in moving to rural areas, this monumental book addresses thousands of potential concerns. The author anticipates virtually everything. Chapter topics include The Ideal Country Home; Buy Your Land as Soon as You Can; Wants, Needs and Fantasies; Developing a Criteria List; Lifestyle; Choose Your Climate; Land Characteristics: Topography, Soil and Vegetation; The Cost of Living; Making a Living; Farming and Market Gardening; Air; Water; Health 101; Demographics and Social Conditions; Services and Taxes; To Build or Not to Build; Prices; Regions, Bioregions, States; Real Country, Boondocks and Old Subsistence Farms; Places to Avoid; Real Estate Law and Real Estate Agents; and Making a Final Evaluation Before Purchase. This is one of those rare realty books that is well-researched, extremely well-written and interesting enough to be compelling. On my scale of one to 10, this fantastic new book rates an off-the-chart 12. -- ROBERT BRUSS, NATIONALLY SYNDICATED REAL ESTATE COLUMNIST

I don't want my country home near this guy
By Modern Homesteader
The best thing I can say about this cliche-fest, is thank goodness it was written before the global warming religion was so popular. In the Introduction GeRue solemnly intones that "Evidence clearly shows that we are destroying our earth, our air, our water.." and uses quotes from the thoroughly debunked Silent Spring author Rachael Carson to bolster his claim. (In 2006 the World Health Organization reversed its 30-year ban on the use of DDT to fight malaria. DDT has proven to be the most effective tool against this disease that annually kills 1 million children.) In the 'Lifestyle' chapter, we learn that "Most modern homesteaders believe that humans are destroying the earth..." The homesteaders I know believe no such thing, and pride themselves on being excellent stewards of all God's creation. In the 'Demographics and Social Conditions' chapter he writes that "Homophobia is prevalent in the Bible Belt and what fairly are called redneck areas, both of which tend to be conservative and traditional." I happen to live in the Bible Belt, and I did not know that homophobia was so wide spread. In the 'Places and Conditions to Avoid' chapter he reminds us that "Military bases are often major polluters with no one to keep them in line." Yes, we need to keep those nasty military polluters in line!
This 'book' reads less like a how-to on picking a country home and more like a 70s-style junior college professor's ramblings about the wonders of country living and the imminent demise of Mother Gaia. There are some good maps and charts, but unless you want a big dose of elitist hot air, skip this one.

Laugh-out-loud good story
By Armchair Interviews
Reviewed by Megan Politte

In this paranormal romance, Paige Darlington is finally free of the literal boss from hell himself--Satan. There's just one hitch: she's been cursed. Paige was designed by Satan to be his ultimate weapon--a wraith. She all of the sudden turns into a killing machine. Everything she touches dies, from flowers and grass to Angels from Heaven. There's only one person who can handle her death touch--Jed Buchanan. Jed just happens to be one of the most feared beings. He's a Shadow Warrior and Satan Jr.'s favorite assassin.

Paige pays Jed to guard her from herself and her inner wraith. He decides to help her but has to come up with a good excuse when Satan Jr. wants to know why his best assassin has softened his heart. Once Junior finds out what Paige is, he wants her all to himself and commands Jed to free her from Satan and bring her over to his side--by making her fall in love with Jed.

Time is running out for Paige as her wraith gets stronger and stronger. The only way for Paige to be free is for her to sneak past the pearly gates and bathe in one of Heaven's cleansing moats, and the only person who can help her do that is Jed.

Stephanie Rowe has written another hilarious installment in her Immortal series. Paige's antics will have you laughing all the way through this witty paranormal romance and begging for more! It has everything a romance lover looks for: fun characters, a sizzling romance and lots of action.

Armchair Interviews says: Good luck putting this one down!!

Laugh Out Loud Funny
By Tammy M. Shaffer
Each story by Ms. Rowe is unique and an attention grabber, just like this title.

During each of the previous stories by Ms. Rowe you've been introduced to characters that are a little different, and this story is not different in that regard. You got to 'know' the heroine slightly in the previous book, in this story you see that even though she's supposed to be evil she doesn't want to be. The hero....well...he has his own problems. This book is a laugh a minute and not to be missed!

Let me describe it like this......... It's about Satan's former right-hand apprentice - Paige Darlington, and Satan Jr's shadow warrior/assassin - Jed Buchanan. Paige Darlington has a 'slight' problem besides being a demon that is. She wants to love and feel emotions, but when Satan created her he added a little something. Anything Paige touches that's alive will die, and as more people/things die by her touch she starts becoming more and more evil. Paige really hates it, and will do whatever she can to stop it. To keep his brother alive, Jed Buchanan works for Satan Jr., the heir to hell and the most evil being in existence. Jed has been forced to do a lot of unsavory things during his time on the 'job'.

Do you think a demon and an assassin can find happiness before everything goes to hell? ::grinning:: I'm not saying, read the book I think you'll enjoy it, I know I did!

From Publishers Weekly
For readers who prefer their whodunits more cute than action-packed, Beaton delivers the 17th installment in his constable Hamish Macbeth series (after 2001's Death of a Dustman). Stodgy "town bobby" Hamish protects and serves the quaint Scottish highlands village of Lochdubh which sees a lot of crime for a one-horse town and outwits the Strathbane big-city police in this story of multiple murders and TV ratings. Seeking better numbers and national notice, the local station hires the glamorous and catty Crystal French, who presents some very nasty programs about what really goes on in a highland village. Needless to say, this doesn't please the local folk, and soon enough, Crystal is found murdered. Suspicion vacillates between the townspeople and the television people (including the woman whose job Crystal had taken), who have quite a few secrets of their own. Hamish sniffs around and formulates theories ("It's because I'm a village constable that I solved your murders for you. I know people better than I know police procedure"), but just when he thinks he's getting somewhere, there's another murder. Things become increasingly complicated, including Hamish's love life: local reporter Elspeth Grant is sweet on Hamish, even if he's too dense to realize it. With teasing epigrams at the start of each chapter, a good dose of Britishisms and light suspense that carries through details both quotidian (Hamish's traffic patrol and his dog Lugs) and faintly exotic (psychics and gypsies), this book is one to be enjoyed with a nice cup of tea and a biscuit. (Jan. 9)from Hell (Forecasts, Oct. 1) and other titles in the Agatha Raisin series.

Constable Hamish Macbeth (Death of a Dustman) has theories about who murdered nosy BBC television reporter Crystal French. Although ordered to drop the case, he can't help but see clues in the local astrology column and elsewhere. A great series.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The seventeenth in Beacon's Death of . . . series, set in the Scottish Highlands north of Inverness, goes down like the finest single malt whisky, leaving a nice gasp and glow in its wake. The glow is from setting, surely; the tiny, perennially embattled village of Lochdubh offers charming views of the Highlands and an insider's take on contemporary Scottish life. And part of the glow comes from Beaton's idiosyncratic village policeman, Hamish Macbeth, whose stubbornness and unorthodox methods make him despised by the Edinburgh police powers, but who always comes through with brilliant deductions. Mostly, the satisfaction the reader gets in these mysteries comes from Beaton's sly send-up of the petri dish of village life: the jealousies, maneuverings, and longstanding grudges that crawl just beneath the civilized surface and bubble up into violence. In the latest, an Edinburgh TV researcher, determined to get on air, comes to Lochdubh to do a series on "Highland Life." Her ambush interviews and sensationalistic exposes of the villagers make her the most unpopular woman in town. When she turns up dead in her BMW, an apparent suicide from an exhaust pipe hookup, only Hamish suspects murder, and he must fight police higher-ups and the TV producers who want the incident hushed up. A new Beaton is a cause for celebration. Connie Fletcher

A fine whodunnit in the heather for the highland's finest...
By jim@coachjim.com
Death descends into the quiet highland village of Lochdubh once again when a muckraking t.v. presenter is found dead in her car just outside of town. It looks like a suicide but police constable Hamish Macbeth thinks differently and sets off to prove otherwise. Nothing comes easy in the highlands, though, and the more he digs into the crime, the more he discovers that many people had motive to murder....
This book is the quintessential Hamish Macbeth: sharp, witty, brooding, and oh-so-unlucky at love. Beaton offers up the most well-rounded Macbeth mystery ever, propelling her quirky (but nicely defined) characters along a briskly paced plot that's as warm as a wee dram o' whiskey.

More mayhem in Lochdubh
By Moe811
An expose style TV program is threatening the peace of the highlands. The presenter is making a career of raking up old scandals and embarassing the residents of the area. One day the woman is found dead, an apparent suicide, but Hamish MacBeth does not think so. The CID in Strathbane as usual, have no idea where to start and Hamish and his new friend Elspeth decide to investigate.
This is a good addition to the series. Elspeth is a welcome new character as is Carson. I was getting tired of everyone treating MacBeth like the village idiot and himself without a backbone. A very good and fast read.

ANOTHER NASTY CHARACTER THAT MOST OF SCOTLAND WANT DEAD!
By D. Blankenship
Death of a Celebrity, by M.C. Beaton is another great offering to all the Hamish fans out there. This simple, well written series has brought a lot of reading enjoyment to many people out there over the years, and this addition only adds to that enjoyment.

Our redheaded constable in Lochdubh finds himself faced with another of Beaton's truly obnoxious characters, this time in the form of a very nasty T.V. personality who is starting a new show featuring MacBeth's little corner of the Highlands. A nasty, aggressive reporter with few morals, and an eye for married men! The premise of the T.V. show will be digging up dirty little stories of locals, doing a feature on them, and then releasing it to National T.V. Needless to say this young ambitious lady is not going to last long! Also, needless to say, there are no end of suspects, Hamish included, who would love to see her dead!

Of course, I am sorry to report, that Hamish is still fretting and moping over his one true and lost love, Priscilla, as she is about to get married to another, but ah, there is a new girl in town! A local reporter with psychic abilities; part gypsy, part liberated woman, bright, a great looker, intelligent, and indeed, as with most of the women in Scotland, she has her eyes set on the eternal bachelor. It that were not enough, he still has the problem of being promoted and the problem of how to get out of that promotion! We still have many of the wacky and eccentric characters we have met before, along with several new ones, which I hope, we see more of in future books.

Of course there is the first murder and the inevitable second one, but we have several nice, although not as serious, crimes thrown in here and there throughout. In addition to crime solving, Hamish is able to make a complete mess out of his love life, per usual...this poor guy just does not have a clue! Lugs, his faithful dog, is still lugs but has some new found freedoms in this story, which he takes full advantage of.

This is another enjoy able, smooth read, not all that complicated, but well done. As with previous novels, the author is again able to say more in one sentence than many writers can in a full chapter. Quirky, simple little mysteries..yes, but thoroughly enjoyable!

Vicious Circle (Felix Castor (Paperback)), by Mike Carey

Felix Castor has reluctantly returned to exorcism after a successful case convinces him that he really can do some good with his abilities---"good," of course, being a relative term when dealing with the undead. His friend Rafi is still possessed, the succubus Ajulutsikael (Juliet to her friends) still technically has a contract on him, and he's still dirt poor.
Doing some consulting for the local cops helps pay the bills, but Castor needs a big private job to really fill the hole in his bank account. That's what he needs. What he gets is a seemingly insignificant "missing ghost" case that inexorably drags him and his loved ones into the middle of a horrific plot to raise one of hell's fiercest demons.
When satanists, stolen spirits, sacrifice farms, and haunted churches all appear on the same police report, the name Felix Castor can't be too far behind...

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—This follow-up to Carey's The Devil You Know (Grand Central, 2007) returns readers to a modern-day London where ghosts and zombies have become part of daily life. The novel revisits the lives of many characters introduced in the first book, including the protagonist, Felix Castor, but it stands alone. Castor has returned to his life as an exorcist and quickly becomes involved in a "missing ghost" case that isn't as open-and-shut as it first appears. Similar in style and subject matter to Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child's Brimstone (Grand Central, 2005), the book combines the detective thriller with supernatural elements to create a plot filled with suspense, ghoulish apparitions, and the Catholic Church. The narration provides a nice mix of dialogue and action, with humorous undertones sprinkled throughout, as Castor must rely on the help of zombies, werewolves, and a succubus to solve the mystery. Although the story begins slowly, it quickly picks up and comes to a satisfying end, finishing Castor's current adventure with a few subplots that are likely to be tied up in the next novel in the series.—Kelliann Bogan, Colby-Sawyer College, New London, NH

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Carey, a noted comics writer and creator, follows up his excellent debut, The Devil You Know (2007), with this even better, and even weirder, sequel. Felix Castor, a freelance exorcist, is hired to find a missing person—well, technically, a missing ghost: a young woman who died last year, and whose spirit returned to her family home but now appears to have vanished. (We told you it was weird.) Little does Felix suspect that this seemingly minor case will lead him into dangers more terrifying than anything he could imagine, or that he will soon be trying to stop the resurrection of a demon of almost limitless evil. Considering its scary subject matter, the novel is relatively light, almost breezy, a traditional first-person detective story with a supernatural twist. The cast of characters is appropriately offbeat (Castor’s old friend is possessed by a demon; the object of Castor’s romantic crush is a succubus), and the story is full of scares, then laughs, then more scares. A treat for fans of supernatural fiction and of private-eye yarns. Genre-bending at its best. --David Pitt

Felix Castor is an interesting and strong character
By Armchair Interviews
Felix Castor is back in Vicious Circle. Once again the exorcist for hire is working in a London where the dead walk among the living. While politicians are trying to decide on what rights the dead should have, Felix is trying to change the focus of his life. After the experiences detailed in the first book, The Devil You Know, the exorcist for hire is no longer so sure that what he is doing is the right thing.

So when a couple asks him to rescue the kidnapped ghost of their child, he is unable to resist the challenge. Yet as always, appearances are deceiving. Felix soon finds himself in deep water as he chases the exorcist who abducted the ghost. He in turn, is being tailed by a pair of weres that begrudgingly obey their orders to leave him alive-for now. Throw in murders, riots and a haunted church, and Felix learns that he may be the only thing standing between the world and the apocalypse.

Mike Carey has taken the complex world he introduced us to in the first Felix Castor novel and expanded its borders. None of the characters are simple. Each person struggles with the burdens that have been dropped on them. Whether it is a succubus trying to fit into human society or the leader of an ex-communicated secret order, Carey fleshes them out and makes them real. Along the way he drops hints about ethics and responsibility, leaving us to wonder who the real monsters are.

Vicious Circle is a terrific book. It will stand comfortably on it own, but is also a rock-solid follow up to the first Felix Castor novel.

Armchair Interviews says: Count on Felix Castor to fill in a good story.

A wonderfully entertaining, fantasy thriller a la noir!
By Jana L.Perskie
"Vicious Circle" is a wonderfully entertaining, fantasy thriller a la noir. The novel abounds with otherworldly creatures - demons, ghosts, zombies, a succubus, lycanthropes, (loup-garous). and one of the Devil's highest ranking minions. What makes the novel really unique, however, is the humor. Felix, ("Fix"), Castor is one of the wittiest protagonists I have come across in a long while. And many of Mike Carey's other characters are real originals. Some of the dialogue made me laugh out loud while shaking in my proverbial boots.

Castor is a hard-boiled but very sympathetic freelance exorcist/ghostbuster. London is his stomping ground. His business card reads "F. Castor Eradications." Fix, as his friends call him, is down on his luck and owes his landlady back rent - nothing unusual about this. Close friend, and former landlady, PEN, aka Pamela Elisa Bruckner, lives in a three story inverted penthouse - the penthouse is underground - and the monstrosity of a house has been in her family for eons, literally. She is a Wiccan Priestess and has been Castor's buddy since college days.

The primary tool Castor uses in his trade is a whistle, a Clarke original, Key of D, ("the saddest chord"). He plays music on his tin whistle to bind and banish spirits. And naturally, he takes it everywhere. The whistle is for him what a gun is for a cop. Since the Millennium, which brought a great upsurge in supernatural activity, he has had to use his whistle and all his other exorcising accoutrements frequently

Felix accidentally wove a master demon, Asmodeus, into his friend Rafi's soul about a year ago. Rafi and his demon now reside in a facility for the violent criminally insane. And all hell breaks lose, literally, when Asmodeus takes over Rafi's mind and acts out. At the top of Felix's "to do" list is to exorcise this powerful demon and set his friend free before he is transferred to a "bottom of the line" facility. This is not an easy task, as magical textbooks put Asmodeus at the top of the "infernal pecking order," and he is burning Rafi up from the inside out!

Felix's priorities multiply when he is contacted by the parents of a missing girl. They hire him to find their daughter. There's one catch - their daughter, Abbie, is a ghost. Abbie drowned on a school trip last summer, and about three months later she "came back home," to her parents delight. If they cannot have their daughter back in the flesh, they'll take the spirit rather than lose her altogether. A few days before, a disreputable exorcist named Dennis Peace took Abbie's ghost, binding her to him, and claiming to be her real father. Abbie's parents believe that only a strong exorcist like "Fix" can go up against Peace and recover their daughter's ghost.

Eventually, Felix gets a fix on Peace, but two loup garous show up with an equal interest in the exorcist kidnapper. They bludgeon Felix and do all kinds of other nasty things to him to get him to talk, but he doesn't have the information they want. So, he is left in really bad shape - barely alive. And the case of the missing ghost becomes more complex - all kinds of twists & turns, and lots more action and violence.

Meanwhile, Felix's friend, Ajulutsikae, a powerful succubus, is trying her hand at exorcism - one can never have too many skills. Felix is allowed to call the sexual incubus "Juliet," and she keeps her powers in check for him. Although she does drive him crazy with lust, he is able to control himself when in her company. Juliet is investigating a haunted church. Another one of Hell's minions has woven itself into the fabric of the church. Resolving this dilemma and saving the congregation proves to be too complex a task for Juliet's novice capabilities - so she calls upon Felix for help. One could say his whistle is being put to good use.

This is no predictable paranormal mystery. The mystery(s) is extremely difficult to solve and the villains are almost too powerful to defeat. A sinister, shadowy air permeates the novel. Carey's exotic characters, the human and not so human, are wonderfully conceived and at times outrageous. Carey's descriptions are very creative and often funny - which provide a break from all the heavy stuff. However, too much extraneous information and way too much graphic violence kept me from rating "Vicious Circle" 5 Stars. The book needs a bit more editing and toning down.

"Vicious Circle" is the second in the Felix Castor series. Although this series is Mike Carey's first foray into fiction, he is a highly successful comic book writer who created the critically acclaimed Vertigo series Lucifer, which garnered numerous international awards and was nominated for five Eisners. I can't wait to read book 3, "Dead Men's Boots.

Further adventures of Felix
By M. J. Gray
Felix Castor returns in a dark sequel to The Devil You Know. This time he is trying to contact the ghost of a girl on her parent's behalf, and disentangle his friend Rafi from a rather nasty demon, and pay his rent, and cope with a succubus who wants to be his sidekick. This is edgy, intelligent writing. In spite of, or perhaps because of(like Neil Gaiman), his background in graphic novels, the Felix Castor novelss are not an easy read. I loved it and hope the third one comes out soon.

From Publishers Weekly
The author, a physician trained in Iran (Your Body's Many Cries for Water), not only believes that drinking water is healthy, but makes extravagant claims for its curative powers. He recounts here how he first discovered the healing abilities of water, when he was a political prisoner more than 20 years ago. While incarcerated, he successfully treated with plain water the stress-induced peptic ulcers that afflicted some of his fellow prisoners. According to Batmanghelidj, most people rely on dry mouth to signal thirst and as a result are seriously dehydrated. He posits that symptoms like fatigue, anxiety or depression indicate dehydration, which may result in serious conditions such as asthma, hypertension, brain damage, cancer, constipation, allergies and obesity. In order to compensate for fluid lost through urination, respiration, and perspiration, Batmanghelidj suggests drinking a minimum of two quarts of plain water daily (not alcohol, caffeine beverages or juices). In order to maintain good health, he also advises ingesting half a teaspoon of salt to balance water intake. In addition, a diet consisting of 80% fruits and vegetables and 20% protein should be followed along with an exercise program. To back up his theories, the author presents a wealth of somewhat confusing medical data as well as patient anecdotes that testify to water as a cure for various diseases. Batmanghelidj does state, however, that those diagnosed with specific conditions should not stop taking their medications abruptly, nor should they embark on a water regime until they have consulted with their physician. This controversial program will have the greatest appeal for devotees of alternative medicine.

"Water, water, everywhere and not a drop to drink!"
By Nalin Nirula
Dr B's book is one of the most useful detailed observations about wellness and disease relating to our relationship with water, well correlated and compellingly illustrated with concurring scientific findings--all of which are available in any good medical text on the human physiognomy.

The book covers detailed understandings of water shortage in the body related to asthma, allergies, blood pressure disorders, diabetes, constipation, auto-immune diseases, pain, heartburn, hiatal hernia, colitis, ulcers, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, depression, gout---the list goes on and contains practically all the well-known and well-experienced villains of ill-health!

Although there are no clinically detailed case studies, for a book of this nature these are not needed. Dr B's observations and references to the relevant current medical teaching make for a solidly convincing case for reversing with water therapy what Dr B calls "Chronic Unintentional Dehydration". Most of our body is composed of water (about 75%). To think that dehydration takes place only when severe symptoms and bodily reactions take place is one the greatest single errors anyone can make as far as health and wellness is concerned. Like Coleridge's ancient mariner, in the present day we seem to be marooned upon a painted ocean going nowhere, losing our health because we have forgotten what it means to drink enough water.

Many people have knocked this finding of Dr B's without going into the merits of the findings that water is a fundamental nutrient for the body, chronic shortfall of which leads to serious dysfunction and disease. A key observation by Dr B is the pointing out the distinction between 'free' water availability in the body and the water that is priority-wise tied up with the body's metabolic functions, and the results of lack of free water in the body.

One reviewer took exception to Dr B's conclusion that morning sickness of pregnancy was not a sign of dehydration. Observation and results must guide any scientific search or research, not linking apparently similar end-points of 'dis-ease' under differing conditions--in this case: nausea-vomiting of long-distance cycling exertion (or some other cause) equated to the nausea-vomiting (morning sickness) of pregnancy.

In my own practise I confirm that Dr B's findings are perfectly correct, and the reason for it is quite straightforward. It is a signal that 'food/nutrition' other than water must not be taken, (water being a major nutrient for the body). This is because the digestion of food (even juice or milk) requires the body to tie up water resources at the cost of reduced functionality of other areas of the body where there is already a water shortfall. Morning sickness is entirely and quickly reversible by adding a proper water intake as well as a pinch of unrefined sea salt. Plain water intake acts very significantly different to watery foodstuffs in the bodily metabolism--again a fact available in any standard medical text.

In the relatively brief period of time I have systematically applied this knowledge to my practise, I have observed remarkable cures with just the addition of the water rehydration therapy to whatever other measures were being taken. In my own practise as a healer, based on Dr. B's findings I use the water requirement guideline for everyone who comes for treatment. (I give my rehydration protocol at the end of this review).

2+ Years Chronic periodic high fever (up to 105 F) in a female child of 9 years living in New Delhi, which was undiagnosed by all modern clinical tests and was over the past two and a half years variously treated as: repeated tonsillitis/acute strep infection (no medicine helped except homeopathy), Typhoid fever, tuberculosis, and of course 'Pyrexia of Unknown Origin' (PUO)and 'NAD' (nothing abnormal diagnosed/[not able to diagnose!]). The mother had been giving the child fruit juices and milk more or less as a 'healthy' alternative to water while the child had no more than 8-12 ounces of water per day.

All juices were stopped. In this particular episode, all antibiotics that had been given continuously for 10 days were stopped in the morning (fever 103 F) and increasing the water intake to between 800-1000 mls for the day, plus 2 pinches of unrefined sea salt on the tongue directly started bringing down the fever within 1 hour; fever gone in 3 more hours with no repetition of fever since then. All fruit juices were stopped. The liver and spleen enlargement disappeared in a few days.

Beginnings of arthritic knees in a 74 year old male from Nepal hitherto healthy, with inability to walk usual distances reversed by 30% in 15 days by his own report with the water rehydration protocol. He continues to improve slowly, where all painkillers and anti-inflammatories failed--he has stopped using anti-inflammatories on his own. If we factor in the fact that he has improved by 30% in distance walkable and pain after having given up the painkillers taken so far, I would think his improvement rate is actually much greater than 30% as a comparable situation.

Other results with rehydration therapy--Many cases of acute constipation reversed/cured; burning in urine with no infection and days later urinary infection diagnosed reversed and cured where antibiotics failed; chronic migraine headaches with nausea, vomiting---reversed/cured. Skin infections, pimples--cured. Angina pains--reversed/healed/cured. (Too early to say what is the clinical/pathological picture--it is under observation). Tear in the meniscus of knee requiring surgery healed with water therapy (and other energy healing methods) not now needing surgery according to the surgeon. Back aches and pains(slipped discs, sciatica) reversed= pain-free within days of water therapy (+ simple exercises in Dr B's book on backaches and arthritis--"How to deal simply with Rheumatoid joint pain & Back Pain"). Acidity and indigestions--healed. Irritable bowel syndrome with bleeding--healed alongwith addition of sugar water as recommended by Dr.B. For the auto-immune disorder, vasculitis (Behcets disease), the symptoms improved in 2 weeks on water +salt +vitamin regimen and continue to do so.

Conclusions: (1)The rehydration therapy works as a stand alone protective, preventive measure against disease. (2)The water therapy reverses many serious disease conditions. (3)Other therapies work much better with the water therapy, and in many cases additional medicinal/surgical measures are not needed where previously considered essential or inevitable. (4)The Ayurvedic dictum "indigestion is the mother of all disease" is fully proven here as all disease arise from three indigestion conditions:(a)Inability to digest (transform) the intake of food/liquids, emotions and thoughts; (b) Inability to expel/excrete indigestible matter or toxic matter (material or emotional), leading to: (c)Storage and accumulation in body fat and body tissues distorting the structures and functions of the body's organs and working systems.

Summary of the Rehydration protocol that I use based on Dr B's work is as follows:

Body weight in kilograms multiplied by 35 milliliters=Standard Total Plain water requirement per 24 hours. (Wt.KG x 35 mls or: Wt.Pounds x 0.55 ounces).

To the Standard Plain water requirement ADD the fluid amount (ounces or mls) of tea+coffe+colas multiplied by 1.1 as these fluid are diuretic as well as inducing sweating (the hot drinks)so you lose more water than you take in with these beverages.

This brings up the total plain water requirement for 24 hours. (Other fluids such as milk/juices do not count for supplementing the plain water requirement because being foods the body responds very differently to them as compared to plain water.) Add to this a couple of pinches of sea salt a day, and in a few hours/days/weeks the condition starts to reverse.

Telling people 'drink more water' or 'drink 10-12 glasses of water a day' is rarely followed, and people have a greatly erroneous idea about their actual water intake! I find a written schedule handed out to my patients works unfailingly.

The protocol I follow for adults as per Dr. B. is:

About 2 glasses of water (1 glass=8 ounces/230 mls) on waking in morning.
1 to 2 glasses of water 1/2 hour before meals.
1 glass of water 2-1/2 hours after a meal.
Other plain water during day as needed.
One multivitamin with minerals, and Vitamin B6 (50-100 mg per day) rounds off the program. (In practise I find the vitamins may not be needed after a few weeks if there is a dietary change in favor of a healthier diet which include more fresh vegetable and some fruits and nuts.)

This seems to be working very well generally. One of the first things to be noticed by all was that frequency of passing urine increased and the color became pale. (According to Ayurvedic guidelines passing urine 6 times a day is normal.) In the case of people who have water-retention/edema, a temporary salt restriction in food along with placing a pinch of sea salt on the tongue twice a day along with gradual increase of water helps in a few days to clear up such chronic conditions. The salt on tongue seems to get the brain to reorder the body's potassium-sodium-water balance when there is adequate availability of free water in the body. The need for diuretics and their attendant ill-effects was eliminated.

I do not offer any of the above as medical advice or suggestions-- I only share a summary of my observations as a results of following Dr. B's protocol. For complete details refer to his book. Anyone who understands and follows Dr. B's regimen can benefit similarly as have many patients in my practise. The man was a genius and apparently is still being greatly misunderstood. (He passed away in 2004).

Five Stars is too small a rating for knowledge of such great importance.

BEST BOOK !!!!
By CDig
Everyone should own a copy of this book!! If everyone drank the water they should, we wouldn't be feeding as much $$ to the pharmacuetical companies... water is free and our bodies need it for everything!! Very enlightening information... do not hesitate to get this book!! I paid full cover price at Barnes and Nobles (knowing I could get it here cheaper) because
I couldn't stop reading it and its worth every penny!! I can feel a big difference and I'm telling everyone about it! It's not fair keeping this kind of knowledge a secret!! And what's more-- every doctor should have a copy in his/her practice and in turn, educate their patients... but since that won't happen, we have to help eachother and educate ourselves... hope this helps.

Easy simple to apply remedy for most of our illneses
By Amazon Customer
Somehow we have been persuaded that natural products that have been here since the dawn of time are harmful to us. Water is one of those products.

I have found that simply following Dr. B's advice has had a profoundly positive effect on my health. Now I rarely drink soft drinks or juices. My weight dropped and stabilized.I eat smaller portions because after drinking water before and after meals I no longer want to eat as much as I did before.I do not have any major illnesses and very rarely have colds or flu.

Fortunately for me I was easily able to integrate water into my life because I use a small machine called a Chi Machine. The manufacturer recomended that users drink a glass of water before getting on the machine and after. So since I use it twice a day I was quickly able to get into the habit of drinking water.

I do drink filtered water. I am sensitive to the taste of chlorine in tap water. I use a Brita filter.

I first read Dr.B's Your Body's Many Cries for water in 1994. My first 4 copies of the book were 'borrowed' and never returned. I was surprised at how easy it was for some people to adopt the watercure.

It is not easy for most of us to undo bad habits. I estimate it will take probably one month of determination to get going but once you establish the habit you are on your way.

Eleven years later I do not regret being persuaded to go back to drinking water.Although Dr. B. did not approve of tea drinking I continued drinking about one cup a day.

I am not a fanatic. I still love the occasional freshy brewed cup of coffee.
