BOOK IS NOT WHAT IS ADVERTISED
By William M.
Okay. First of all this is a reprint of a guide that was first published in Britain that does not seem to have been edited for American publication. Secondly, there are mistakes--pick your favorite series and browse and you'll find some--I did (in the SPACE:1999 section if you must know.) Also, each show is kind of reviewed but individual episodes are NOT reviewed, which was not the impression I got from the TV commercial. And there is even a British series that the channel shows (MONSTERS) that is not listed. Now, if you were the sci fi channel, wouldn't you at least make sure every show that you broadcast was in the book?? Now, I gave the book 2 stars because it does have an awful lot of info in one convenient place. Still, I would recommend that anyone interested in this LOOKS at it first. Don't buy it sight unseen. And remember that british opinions on series do not always match american opinions.

Misfits of Science
By C. J. Ess
Great book but it failed to include the old 80's show called Misfits of Science starring a young Kevin Peter Hall (Predator 1 & 2, Harry and The Henderson's) and Courteney Cox (Scream and Friends). The show only ran 1 season 1985-1986. [...]

One of my favorite reference works
By Michael J. Mazza
"The Sci-Fi Channel Encyclopedia of TV Science Fiction" is an impressive achievement by co-authors Roger Fulton and John Betancourt. The book is a guide to dozens of science fiction TV series dating from the 1950s to the late 1990s. The authors include British and U.S. series (as well as a few productions from elsewhere). A nice touch is the inclusion of children's series and short-lived series (such as TV's "Planet of the Apes" and "The Fantastic Journey"). Fantasy, as well as sci-fi, series are included.
For the main series profiled, the authors provide an introductory article as well as a complete episode guide. For each episode, they give a plot summary, as well as writing, directing, and guest-starring credits.
Not all the series are given such detailed attention; some only have the episode titles listed, and some don't even get that. In general, shows that get less comprehensive attention are shows that are primarily thought of as representatives of another genre: "Bewitched" (sitcom), "The Six Million Dollar Man" (action/adventure), etc.
Despite its sometimes incomplete nature, this is a wonderfully informative and entertaining book. Sci-fi staples and cult favorites are well represented: "Babylon 5," "Blake's 7," "Quantum Leap," "Star Trek" and its various sequels, "The X-Files," etc. I particularly liked the ample attention given to short-lived shows that were nonetheless loved by devoted circles of viewers.
Of course, a book of this nature is generally out of date by the time it hits the bookshelves, so I am already anticipating a new edition. But until then, this book remains in an honored position in my library.

Annie Harlowe is still reeling from the death of her husband, Andre, a year ago and desperately trying to make ends meet for herself and their two children, Milo and Trixie. Though she is having trouble paying her credit-card bills, she faithfully pays the bill for her husband's cell phone so that she can hear his recorded voice. One day someone actually picks up--through the static, she thinks it might be Andre, communicating with her from beyond. Annie can't fathom moving on until she meets handsome, rich Thom Brannock at a party she is helping to cater at his house. Sparks fly instantly between them, and when Thom stops by to return Annie's wedding ring, which slipped off at his house, he starts to break through her defenses. Not usually a fan of the present tense writing, but this worked well. A very sensitive portrayal of loss and learning to let go and live again.

Laughter And Tears!
By Kristi Ahlers
I love a story that makes me both laugh and cry! This story offers just that kind of read, but why not a higher score? Annie. Annie is a character that alternated between entertaining me and annoying me. Not a good trait in a main character.

Annie is a widow. A young widow who is trying to raise her two childeren off of the earnings she makes creating crafty items to be sold to the "city people" that come to the Hamptons for the summer. She has a fixer-upper that is falling apart around her and she is still not over the death of her husband. Enter her best friend Merlin. Merlin has asked her to help him one night at a rather posh party he is doing. Annie agrees despite her misgivings and need for cash. She has a thing against the "snooty" people that will be there and she doesn't want to leave her kids alone with a sitter. Still she goes and works and meets the most charming man in the world. The first man that makes her heart beat a little faster. Thom with an "H."

Thom is trying to find his place in life. He has a mother who is all about pedigree's, a sister that has forgotten how to smile and have fun, and a girlfriend that is just not working for him. Just when he thinks his party could not get any worse he is run over by a petit dark haired waitress. Ann is just the person he's been looking for...now if only he can convince her to take a chance with her heart again and allow him to lover her as he wants.

This is a complex love story to be sure. One person trying to move on from a tragic death, one trying to live period. Add two sweet little kids, a ghost, and a treasure hunt and you have "Hello, It's me." Now overall this was a good read but what kept it from being "Great" was Annie. Again she has her issues but her growth was slow going. The side story of husband Andre coming to Annie from the otherside was rather weak. I truly expected a little more there with that aspect of the story. Otherwise this was a light entertaining read you may want to add to your summer reading list.

Loved it!

HELLO,IT'S ME by Wendy Markham
Edited May 19, 2005

HELLO IT'S ME by Wendy Markham was not what I had expected to find. A book that is a little more than the standard light-hearted romance, it delves into the topic of how to go on after the death of a spouse.

Annie Harlowe was married to the love of her life, Andre, and had two children together. They live a simple life on the beaches of Long Island, in a small village called Montauk. It is in the prologue that Annie learns of her husband's sudden death, helping to set the mood for the rest of the book.

The chapter after the prologue begins a year later, and Annie is trying to make ends meet by helping out with her best friend Merlin's catering company and serving food at parties that are held at exclusive summer homes owned by the rich and famous. This is not Annie's favorite thing to do but it helps to pay the bills. She also creates trinkets and other types of souvenirs that the beach crowd may want to buy before going back to their homes in the city. She's an artist first, and always will be, and she refuses to conform to society's expectations by working a 9-to-5 job. This was what she and Andre had always vowed, and she was not going to change now.

Annie has it in her mind that Andre does not want her to move on. Every day she calls Andre's old cell phone number, which she is still keeping active by paying monthly fees despite the fact that she can barely pay her other bills, and listens to his voice on the recording. One day she swears that Andre has picked up the other line and is trying to send her a message. What that message is, she does not know, but she tries to contact him again, knowing that anyone who knew what she was doing would think she'd finally cracked.

At one of Merlin's parties she meets Thom, a very wealthy man, and he finds himself very attracted to her. Annie doesn't realize it, but she too is also mutually attracted to him. Unfortunately, Thom is dating (and expected to marry) Joyce, who is supposedly the perfect woman for Thom. Annie, on the other hand, refuses to take off her wedding ring, feeling that she's expected to love Andre until the day she dies.

Despite these problems, Thom finds a way to get under Annie's skin. Luckily for him she loses her wedding ring at the party and now he HAS to deliver it to her personally. This is the start of their relationship: two people taking a chance on something very uncertain. Annie is not quite ready to move forward, but her kids have already taken it to heart that Thom is going to be their next daddy. This reviewer feels the kids steal the "show", so to speak, and there are a number of scenes that will leave the reader sniffling into a tissue.

HELLO, IT'S ME is a very delightful novel. The two children, Trixie and Milo, will be every reader's favorites. They were both very lovable little children (at the start of the book Milo is five years old, and Trixie is three) and in their innocent ways help bring Annie and Thom together. What was a surprise to this reader is that the novel is not your average light-hearted romance. This story works on many levels, and touches upon a topic that is not often seen in a typical romance, the subject of how to deal with the death of a spouse. This reviewer gives this novel by Wendy Markham four stars and recommends it to all who love a romance with a small box of tissues.

The wildest thriller yet from "one of America's most influential authors" (New York Times)...Working as a lifeguard at a luxurious Florida resort, Ned Kelly meets the woman of his dreams. It feels perfect in every way-except that she's used to caviar and Manolo Blahniks, and he's used to burgers and flip-flops.So when Ned's cousin offers to cut him in on a fast break-and-enter job, Ned can't turn it down. The risk is high, and the reward is even greater-$5 million. But the robbery goes devastatingly wrong. Forced to run away from his town and the woman he's fallen in love with, Ned knows that only distance and secrecy can save his life. But who is pursuing him? The FBI? Whoever sabotaged the heist? Or is it all somehow tied in to his new love-and his oldest enemies?

From Publishers Weekly
Campbell brings a strong presence as narrator to this latest thriller from collaborators Patterson and Gross. Part-time lifeguard/beach bum Ned Kelly meets the woman of his dream—rich and sexy Tess McAuliffe—and thanks to some old childhood friends, he has an opportunity to earn an easy, albeit illegal, $5 million by creating several diversions around town while his friends steal a fortune in art work. When the art disappears and his friends are murdered, Ned finds himself on the run as the FBI's number one suspect in the killings. The authors keep the story moving quickly, providing plenty of twists, turns and close escapes, but little logic or believability. Campbell does a fine job, handling himself with serious aplomb. He shifts easily from third-person narrative to Ned's reflective first-person perspective, and gives each of the supporting characters their own, distinctive voice. His performance rises above the overly melodramatic material.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Don't be fooled by the title of Patterson's latest thrilling yarn--the action goes far beyond the beach. Ned Kelly grew up on the wrong side of the tracks in Brockton, but he got out, and now his life seems to be falling into place. He's interested in a beautiful woman named Tess and has decided to chance one last heist with four of his childhood friends. Ned's job is simple--all he has to do is set off several house alarms while his friends hit the real target, the mansion of Dennis Stratton, to steal three valuable paintings. But when Ned's friends enter the house and discover the paintings already gone, they realize they've been double-crossed, and before Ned can reach them, all four are murdered. Then Tess is found dead in her hotel room, and, fearing how bad things are looking for him, Ned goes on the lam, hoping to clear his name. He goes back to Brockton to find his father, a small-time criminal he suspects may have been involved in setting up his friends. He's being pursued by Federal Agent Ellie Shurtleff, an art expert, who becomes an unlikely ally. Packing all the punches readers have come to expect from Patterson's books, this one delivers at every turn. Kristine Huntley

READ IT IN A DAY!
By Sandeeee
I read this book on a very nice day on the beach. I started it at 8am and by 830 pm, the sun had set and I had finished the book. What this all means is that it's VERY HARD TO PUT DOWN! Lots of action, surprises, mystery, all the great things that Patterson is known for!! I definitely recommend it !!!!!!

Disappointed
By Neker
The only "Patterson" I found in this book is his signature short chapters. The book is short, the print is large and the chapters average about three to four pages long. Obviously a reader could finish it off in a night, which I did. But it wasn't because I couldn't put it down.

I found the characterization horrible. The characters were so flat and boring. How can a guy who came so close to receiving his MA be so gullible, air-headish, and stupid? Or an up and coming FBI agent so easily believe a total stranger even when ALL the facts say something different? This can't possibly be Patterson's writing. It sounds nothing like his earlier books that so easily captured the actions and thoughts of a complex character. I don't think I'd bother with another of his co-authorships again.

LifeGuard
By N. Blake
What the heck happened to the James Patterson's books? I don't know who's writing these books, but it's certainly not him. There were parts in this book that didn't even make sense. I think Mr. Patterson should stop loaning his name out and get down to writing something fantastic like some of his first books.

Karen Rose keeps getting better and better!
By cmiller
I would give this book six stars if I could!

Ethan Buchannan has a mission to find his godson who was kidnapped. Alec is a twelve year old deaf/mute boy who was taken from his house for a five million dollar ransom. He would do anything to help Alec's mom find him, no matter what the cost to himself.

Sue Conway has her reasons for kidnapping Alec. After 10 years in prison, she is starting her retribution on the people she feels put her there. The kidnapping of Alec is just the beginning of a chain of events that was so horrifying and creepy, I had to put the book down at times. Karen Rose writes evil so well, you feel like you're in Sue's head w/ her.

Dana Dubrinksy runs the Hanover House which is a place where battered women come for aid. When Sue shows up, she has no reason to doubt her. Her face is bruised and her "son" shows definite signs of trama.

Ethan and Dana meet not knowing that Dana is housing the very person he is looking for. The relationship between the two is extremely intense. Both have their own dark secrets which they are trying to get past. Eventually they have to team up, along with characters that KR has introduced in previous books (Caroline and Max, Mia and Abe) along with a new character (or two) that is sure to have his own story somewhere down the line, to find Alec before he is killed.

Do not miss this book! It is a true winner. It will be along wait before her next book is out.

A "Must Read Author!!!"
By Kristi Ahlers
Ms. Rose is a suspense author that you should add to your "must read" list. This lady can create characters and storylines that will leave you with goosebumps and chills, but warm you with a wonderfully touching romance!

Dana Dupinsky runs a shelter for battered women. She has had experience with this that has left deep scars on her soul. She has no idea that she has provided a safe haven for a monster. But, when bodies of her friends start turning up dead she has to face the fact that she must trust the one and only man that has ever made her feel safe and secure. In order to do this she must do the one thing she never thought she could do. Allow someone else a chance to protect her. But, will she realize too late that she is worth saving and that Ethan is what her heart has been looking for all along?

Ethan Buchanan is looking for the woman that kidnapped his godson. He knows that he and his partner Clay should call in the police for help, but they have been warned against this. Now it's a race against the clock to find Alec before he becomes part of the body count behind the moster Sue. Just when he must have his entire focus on Alec, he meets Dana. She calms him in ways he never thought possible. He is drawn to her and he won't let her get away. What will happen though when he finds out she has been unwittingly harboring the lady that has taken Alec?

This was a chilling read. Ms. Rose has created a villian that will make the reader shudder. At the same time there are so many twists and turns you'll be sitting on the edge of your chair waiting for the other shoe to drop! Needless to say this was fast paced read and one that was highly entertaining! The romance between Ethan and Dana was realistic and...romantic. We meet up again with Caro and Max ("Dont' Tell) and Detective Abe Reagan (I'm Watching You") in this action packed read. If you are a fan of romantic suspense Ms. Rose is the author for you!

Nothing To Fear is NOTHING to miss--another great read by Ms. Rose!
By MimmiB
Security expert Ethan Buchannan is in WAY over his head. But because of a bad case of survivor's guilt, and love, he has agreed to fight time and try to stay out of the police's notice while searching for Alec Vaughn, his deaf godson, who has been kidnapped. The kidnapping resulted in a brutal killing, and the disappearance of both Alec and his speech therapist, Cheryl. Alec's parents have been told that if they notify the police, Alec will die. Being a security expert, Ethan is quickly able to trace the email that was sent to the Vaughn's, and from there follow the trail that the woman who has taken Alec leaves. He quickly ends up in Chicago. While getting permission to search the video of a train station, Ethan meets Dana Dupinsky. He's immediately intrigued with the sizzle from the spunky Dana--who is she, what is she doing in a train station in the middle of the night?--but he can't loose focus on finding Alec. Dana Dupinsky has every reason to avoid the hunky Ethan. She can tell immediately that he has secrets of his own, but the secrets she's hiding are too sacred to share with any MAN. But what she doesn't tell, and what she keeps Ethan from finding out when she doesn't share her secrets--is that she runs a battered womens shelter where she gives refuge to women and children who come to her--she keeps there whereabouts hidden from all, to the point that there are times she helps them dissapear forever. And what neither of them know is that she's got Alec and his kidnapper in her shelter... Ethan and Dana's attraction to one another cannot be denied...but they're both caught up in a whirl wind...Dana's best friend is hit by a car in a hit and run...the Vaughn's receive more threatening emails...a doctor for the shelter winds up dead...and bodies are turning up all over Chicago. Ms. Rose pens an incredibly suspensful and moving story. While we know who dunnit form the get go, we don't why, and the curves that come up along the way make this an incredible roller coaster of suspense. The pages sizzle with emotion from Dana and Ethan, and I found myself falling for yet another of Ms. Rose's secondary charachters (when is Clay's book, anyway??). Not to be missed reading!!

I watch sixteen football games over nine hours. It's an extraordinary accomplishment...With the remote secure in the palm of my hand, or more often resting on my chest, I am all powerful. I haven't missed an important play since the Carter administration. His streak of murder case acquittals made him a regular on cable talk shows. His recent $22 million inheritance bought him a dog rescue operation named after his beloved golden retriever. Now after turning down cases left and right, attorney Andy Carpenter feels like he's facing a midlife crisis. And just when he decides he needs some real work, a newspaper owner friend asks Andy to protect his star reporter. Daniel Cummings is being used as a mouthpiece by a serial killer...but the reporter gets way too close to his story when he's found near the murderer's latest victim. Quickly working to save what's left of Cummings's rep, Andy soon makes news himself when he starts receiving death threats-and moves dangerously close to becoming tomorrow's big obituary.

From Publishers Weekly
In Rosenfelt's breezy crime confection, his third to feature Andy Carpenter (after 2003's First Degree), a serial killer who cuts off his victims' hands has been terrorizing the dog-loving lawyer's northern New Jersey turf. When the cops charge one of the murders to newspaperman Daniel Cummings, who's been receiving messages from the killer taunting the police, Andy and his legal team step up to the defense. The author writes like a guy relentlessly channel surfing, always on the move, never risking boredom. Of police fiber technician Donald Prescott, one of the many characters briefly met, he notes: "if you possess both a desire to be a cop and a self-preservation instinct, it's a good job to have. There is even less chance that Prescott will get shot at than the guy who draws the chalk outlines around bodies." When a Passaic police detective asks Andy what he was doing while his ex-cop girlfriend was beating up a bad guy ("Holding her purse?"), Andy thinks, "He knows nothing; the fact is that Laurie wasn't even carrying a purse that night. It was more of a handbag." The witty asides never stop. The novel may not have a single convincing dramatic moment, but the tricks and turns before the resolution provide a fun rollercoaster ride.

From Booklist
Wisecracking defense attorney Andy Carpenter takes on his third unwinnable case in this thoroughly winning series. Antsy about reporter Daniel Cummings' exclusive contact with a serial killer who is strangling Jersey girls and removing their hands, the local newspaper editor retains Andy in case any legal issues should arise. Say, murder? Cummings is caught red-handed with the severed appendages of the latest victim, a local politician, and the prosecutor has plenty of hard evidence to suggest they've got their man. Miscellaneous complications with cold- and hot-blooded killers ensue, as the plot careens around various turns, but the real charm of this series lies in the wit of its affable narrator, who is not about to let an ongoing capital trial keep him from walking his beloved golden retriever, betting the point spread, or losing on the stock market. Add to this a likable supporting cast and a low-key love interest, and you have the legal-thriller genre's waggish rejoinder to Anthony Bruno and Janet Evanovich. A sure bet. David Wright

Lightweight Entertainment
By Gary Griffiths
David Rosenfelt is an easy author to like. His prose is light, casual, and witty, neither pretentious nor self-important. Kind of like Rosenfelt's defense lawyer-hero, Andy Carpenter, who stars again in "Bury the Lead". Andy is back with the usual cast of supporting characters: girlfriend/PI Laurie Collins, "Law-dromat" owner and hypochondriac Kevin Randall, and of course Tara, the golden retriever. "Bury" is again set in the northern New Jersey suburbs that Rosenfelt knows so well ("The Giants and the Jets play football in Jersey, yet they deny its existence, referring to themselves as `New York'"). Daniel Cummings, a high profile reporter with some baggage, is chosen by a fiendish serial killer as a conduit to the police, but soon finds himself as the number one suspect. Carpenter and team are initially reluctant, but eventually are convinced of his innocence and take on Cummings' defense. What follows is a relatively lightweight plot that, just when starting to stretch and fray around the edges, moves along quickly enough satisfy all but the most critical cases of A.D.D. There are a couple of twists to hold mild interest, but not so much as to make this a novel you'll remember three months from now. But Rosenfelt's likeable cast and breezy pace more than compensate any weaknesses in the action, and a surprisingly light tone, despite the rather gruesome subject matter, is a refreshing twist in itself.
I suspect that the first-time Rosenfeld reader may find "Bury the Lead" somewhat more enjoyable than will the Rosenfelt veteran, as the Andy-Laurie-Tara act begins to wear a bit thin on this the third installment. Nonetheless, "Bury the Lead" is a credible and entertaining effort, well worth the time. One word of caution: at 272 pages of large print, this is a short read - don't plan on using it for filler on too long a flight.

Another Winner!
By Jude
I was not disappointed with Rosenfelt's new book. Like the previous two, it was a fast and very interesting read with a good plot twist. This is not Robert Ludlum material- but if you're looking for a good weekend/beach type read, this is it. Love his writing style- reminds me of Nelson De Mille's style in "Gold Coast". I'm also a Golden Retriever Rescue volunteer, so I love the way the author gets the word out.

Don't bury this book - read it!
By Nancy R. Katz
Bury the Lead is the third book in a series featuring lawyer Andy Carpenter. Andy is up to the same old things now that he's inherited 22 million dollars which was the basis for the plot of his first book Open and Shut. Andy walks his dog Tara, spends time with his girlfriend Laurie, helps out at the Tara Foundation, a placement center for stray dogs rescued from death and occassionally represents a clinet in court. He also spends a great deal of time with a circle of friends whose antics along with Andy kept me laughing till I was crying.

But times are tense in the area of New Jersey where Andy lives.
Recently there have been three women who have been brutally murdered and there seems to be no rhyme or reason for the murders since the women are totally unrelated to one another in every way. Then a young reporter captures the attention of the killer and is being fed information as to what has happened and will happen next. As the police scramble to find the serial killer, a fourth woman is found brutally murdered in the same fashion and this time the killer has struck a prominent state official from New Jersey. Almost no time goes by before an arrest is made and the person charged is the least likely suspect readers can imagine. Andy is then asked to represent the alleged murderer and as usual there is bound to be some tense moments till the murders are solved and the real murderer is brought to justice.

I really enjoyed this book as I did the other two in this series.
I especially love Andy's sense of humor and wit. I highly recommend this series adn now look forward to the fourth title
which will be available this spring.

Amazon.com Review
An unexpected bestseller, this self-help book for women who want to hook a man seems to have struck a chord with desperate American women. Fein and Schneider, whose main credentials seem to be that they are married, lay out the rules to be followed for successfully snagging a dream hunk. And these rules are hard as cast-iron--Rule Five: Don't Call Him and Rarely Return His Calls. The idea is to return to pre-feminist mind games, exploiting the male hunting urge by playing hard to get. The result seems unliberating--Rule Seventeen: Let Him Take the Lead--but it seems to be capturing female minds. Rules Girls are eyeing the phone with steely resolve, and Rules seminars are springing up nationwide. Curious bachelors have been observed studying The Rules, some frowning, others with the supercilious smile of the hunter.

It's a rule book, not the Declaration
By Lune Pur
I've read a lot about this book being anti-feminist and there are lots of perfectly "logical" arguments out there about it, but here is my two cents:

First off, when you read a book you should take what you like and leave the rest. Think for yourself.

That said, this book does a great job at what it promises: providing direction for a more successful love life. A few women made the following comment: "If the book is so great, why are there still single people?" Aside from some of the obvious answers which render this question so absolutely STUPID, I think it's a good idea to remember that love and romance are very tricky, elusive subjects and we will never have them completely fleshed out. Times change, people change. But there are some concepts that really run deep (such as men, no matter how shy, being a "certain" way, which has produced a societal structure which we are finally attempting to fix but will probably take a long time to), and I think "The Rules" (as well as other fabulous books that I highly recommend, like Kara King's "Power of the Pussy" and Sherry Argov's "Why Men Love Bitches") really connects with this notion. Until men and women are truly equal in all aspects (not just "profession" while in their love lives men still treat woman in a weird conquest-y way), it is wise to accept that they're a different animal and beat them at their own game rather than naively try to play the game that's only in your own head.

I love that this book offers a simple, feminine (I say feminine because I do think that mystery and wonder, while accessible to every individual, are qualities that inherently have a sort of feminine energy) mindset. I love that it feels like I'm in a school all about the game of love. I love the idea that there are unspoken rules out there. When I have a million things on my mind and I'm trying to enjoy myself with my favorite guy, I like to have a comfortable position to fall into. I think The Rules encourages all the wonderful experiences that being in love and dating have to offer -- they just make the road much less bumpy.

If you read, learn; but enjoy yourself. That's what it's all about.
Cheers!

A Way to Meet the Wrong Man and Have an Unhappy Marriage
By Keith Sargent
I consider myself a nice man and wondered why I'm not having much luck in the dating game. I read THE RULES and now understand why. When women treat me the way THE RULES suggest, I don't want to date them anymore.

The best relationships start off as friendships and the happiest marriages are those where you consider your partner your best friend. But when women treat me with Rule #5: "Don't call him and rarely return his calls," I'm not interested in even being friends, because friends don't treat each other that way.

Since I cannot read a woman's mind, I assume that not returning my phone calls is a signal she's not interested in me. As the authors state on p.6, THE RULES are to teach women how to play hard to get. But playing hard to get means that women will attract men who don't take "no" for an answer. "No" means "try harder." Is this the kind of man an intelligent women wants to attract? More likely it leads to misunderstandings, sexual harassment, and date rape.

THE REAL RULES by Barbara De Angelis, Ph.D. are what I hope women will pay attention to. Rule #1: "Treat men the way you want them to treat you." It seems so obvious, but goes against everything in THE RULES. Rule #5: "Be yourself." Again, this is the opposite of THE RULES which tell you to pretend to be someone you're not so you can attract Mr. Right. But if Mr. Right falls in love with the person you pretend to be, how will he feel when he discovers you are not that person? He will feel tricked and angry because you lied to him and were playing games.

THE RULES is a book written to teach women how to lie, how to play games, and how to manipulate men. I'm not interested in women like that, and the men those women do catch are probably stupid Neanderthals. If those are the kind of men women want, then they should buy this book and follow THE RULES carefully.

Saved My Life !!!!

I am really thankful to the authors for bringing both Rules I and Rules II. I read these books at a time in my life when I was at my lowest. I was desperately clinging onto a man who did not love me back. I was hurt and my self-esteem was at an all-time low.
When I first picked up the book in the library, I thought it was so stupid and shallow. But I decided to go ahead and read it anyway. All of a sudden everything started falling in place. I saw everything I did wrong when I was with the man I thought I loved. Eventually the relationship soured because of my neediness. All I can tell you is that the Rules helped me to gracefully let go of him. I got my self-esteem back and am beginning to love myself in ways I never thought possible. There is still a lot of learning and growing to do but I know I am in the right direction.
Although I am not in the relationship anymore, when I am in contact with my ex, he wonders about my change. He is surprised at how different I am now. All of a sudden, I also noticed that he now talks to me with respect and wonder. I think he can't believe that I let go of him without a fuss. I still care for him but I no longer feel obligated to do anything about it. If he really wants me, he has to make the moves again. As for me, I am content finally. If there is someone in my life, that will be great. If not I am just learning to love myself more and more everyday.

This management handbook teaches readers how to outperform, outsmart and outrun your competition by successfully adapting to the changing business climate. From Publishers Weekly
In this amusing but hopelessly dated book, the authors use the age-old cartoon battle between the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote as the metaphor for what will and will not work in business in the next millennium. The message of Bell, a management consultant, and Harari, a consultant and professor at the University of San Francisco, is simple, clear and presented through interviews with successful businesspeople and through humorous descriptions of scenes from the Warner Bros. cartoon. The bottom line: management and workers must be fast-moving, innovative, flexible and constantly learning; otherwise, like Wile E. Coyote, they are doomed to eat the dust of more nimble competitors like the Road Runner. There is nothing wrong with either the authors' presentation or their message. The problem is that the advice will strike even the most casual reader of management ideas as old hat. After all, the concepts of team work, continuous learning and taking control of your work life have been around for most of the 1990s. Drawing on corporate synergies--the parent company of Warner Books owns the rights to both the Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner characters--makes the message more fun to hear again, but the authors don't break any new ground. Illus. $100,000 ad/promo; radio satellite tour.

From Kirkus Reviews
Sensible and decent, albeit hyperventilated and not exactly original, behavioral advice for business managers in the new millennium, served up by consultants Bell and Harari. Wile E. Coyote is the foil and Road Runner the paragon in this management handbook. One is conniving, secretive, grim, myopic, mired in convention (Wile E. wears gray flannel); the other is fluid, improvisational, artful, and visionary, a trickster in Technicolor threads. Gathered under their aegis is a host of guidelines the authors consider life forces for conducting business. Get beyond the paradigm, they counsel, for there is no paradigm any longer. The age of computers and the Internet requires freethinking and risk-taking. The workplace will rarely have four walls and a nice view at the top; hierarchy gives way to egalitarianism and flexibility; power is about influence, not fear; a no-time mindsetthe kind that drives freelancersrules. The player in the newly dominant digital marketplace will be as nimble as that medium's circulation of information and capital, and the key words are speed, speed, speed, constrained only by honor and principle. Cross-fertilization will erode the false boundaries that obscure the big picture, and only the most unpredictable will be able to grab the attention of the crowd glued to their monitors. A jittery format of boxes, halftones, and a clipped text structures the book, yet there are also numerous examples that help ground Bell and Harari's potentially vacuous enjoinders to be ingenious, imaginative, and intuitive. Beneath their caffeine high, they're strong advocates of the currently trendy business humanism, which argues that anti-authoritarian, collegial work equals life, because that's where you want to be. Standard business leadership exhortations, already well-trafficked by the likes of Tom Peters and, for that matter, good old Road Runner himself. Thought-Provoking Visit to the Funny and Familiar
By Roger E. Herman
The Road Runner cartoons are classic. Most of us grew up laughing out loud as Wile E. Coyote encountered one challenge after another in his attempts to capture the Road Runner. The scenarios were simple. The coyote devised ways to capture lunch, never winning the competition. His tools, all products of Acme Company, backfired on him. He caused himself a great deal of difficulty, while the Road Runner went on with his life, practically oblivious to the coyote's campaign.
At the start of their book, Bell and Harari note that coyotes can run 30 miles per hour and road runners can't really fly and can only run 16 miles per hour. Wile E. Coyote has an endless arsenal of gadgets to trap the road runner, all provided by his single supplier, Acme. He's a master planner, yet continually fails . . . of his own volition. What's the problem here? Why is the Road Runner so successful? Because he's operating under different rules. The coyote may be seen as chained to conventional wisdom, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. A bureaucrat. The Road Runner is more like the agile entrepreneur, competing with a whole different paradigm.
The authors take this familiar cartoon and turn it into an instructive business case. Their objective is to help us become road runners among coyotes. In page after page, they pull lessons from the cartoons that we probably all missed as kids, comparing the characters and their motivations and their results. "Wile E. Coyote is preoccupied, earnest, conniving, and grim. The Road Runner is joyful, light, and free. Wile E. does nothing but go from pursuing one meal to the next, with perpetual frustration; the bird is gleefully living life to the fullest. The results are the same: Wile E. somehow manages to dig himself into the hole of failure, while the Road Runner strides on, undeterred and unaffected by life's bumps and obstacles."
Can you imagine the authors conducting their research for this book?
As we move through the book, we learn more about the comparative principles and how to succeed in the Age of the Road Runner. Familiar names populate the pages as we are provided with examples of companies and people. A "Tail Feathers" feature spotlights ordinary people doing extraordinary things-as Road Runners. The stories are inspirational, as well as educational. "Bird Seed" sections furnish the reader with solid advice that fits the concept, but it not linked to the two main characters.
Descriptive summaries of Road Runner cartoon incidents are liberally sprinkled throughout the book, keeping the reader laughing and smiling and wondering in amazement how the coyote could keep going in this futile struggle. And therein lies the tale of this book. To survive in a Road Runner Age, you cannot continue to operate like a coyote. The book is filled with current wisdom, but just as important, it's a fun book to read. People learn more when they're laughing, so expect to gain a lot from Beep! Beep!

Fresh. Far-reaching. Fun. Destined to be a business classic!
By A Customer
What a clever idea to use timeless cartoon characters to symbolize the realities and opportunities now before businesses everywhere!
Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner are a fun and apt way illustrate the business mindsets and methods that predominate today versus the perspectives and strategies that will prevail tomorrow. They make instant sense! And so it was easy for Bell and Harari open my eyes to the naked truth: If we stick to our outdated Coyote-like ways much longer, we will surely fail -just like Wile E. fails, time and time again. And if we follow the Road Runner's example, we are more likely to thrive in an emerging world that demands re-thinking our organizations and our roles in them.
But that's not the best of it. BEEP! BEEP! is loaded with deeper, richer insights. Bell and Harari's ideas on risk, reward, integrity, freedom, and power - to name just a few - are provocative and profound, enough to make me squirm and begin plotting my transition from a Coyote to a more Road Runner-like manager. Even better, the authors distill their insights into a handful of easy-to-grasp "rules." Then they make those guidelines even more powerful with helpful tips for real-life application plus example after example drawn from companies large and small around the globe.
This entertaining blend of fresh ideas with sound practical advice on putting them to work immediately makes BEEP! BEEP! a rare resource, one I will go back to again and again.

A Good Read!
By Rolf Dobelli
Wile E. Coyote hovers in a hot air balloon over the road, waiting to drop an anvil on the unsuspecting Road Runner. Wile E. puts a grenade in the seat of a toy airplane and ... you know what happens. He becomes the victim of his own diabolical plans. The Road Runner wins every time. Chip R. Bell and Oren Harari’s book turns a cartoon classic into a wonderful metaphor for today’s fast-paced work environment. Organizations are changing their cunning competitive ways. Instead of behaving like Wile E. Coyote, they are becoming like the quick, agile, joyful Road Runner. In an amusing style, the authors illustrate their points with cartoons of the famous duo and plenty of plot scenarios and interesting tidbits of trivia. The “Birdseed” sections scatter tips to help you and your company make the transition to the wide-open desert of opportunity ahead. Those who grew up with Road Runner will relate to this book immediately. We ...recommend this book to Road Runner’s business fans or to anyone who wants to have fun while learning how to steer a company through the speedy new marketplace.

The Big Bad Wolf (Alex Cross), by James Patterson

Alex Cross battles the most ruthless and powerful killer he has ever encountered - a predator known only as "the Wolf. "Alex Cross's first case since joining the FBI has his new colleagues stymied. Across the country, men and women are being kidnapped in broad daylight and then disappearing completely. These people are not being taken for ransom, Alex realizes. They are being bought and sold. And it looks as if a shadowy figure called the Wolf - a master criminal who has brought a new reign of terror to organize crime - is behind this business in which ordinary men and women are sold as slaves. Even as he admires the FBI's vast resources, Alex grows impatient with the Bureau's clumsiness and caution when it is time to move. A lone wolf himself, he has to go out on his own in order to track the Wolf and try to rescue some of the victims while they are still alive. As the case boils over, Alex is in hot water at home too. His ex-fiancee, Christine Johnson, comes back into his life - and not for the reasons Alex might have hoped.

From Publishers Weekly
Unlike the original Big Bad Wolf, Patterson's newest and arguably most fear-inspiring villain maims, slaughters and kidnaps victims for purposes of sexual slavery. Rumored to be a Russian émigré, this shrewd predator has made crime pay so fabulously he sits atop an empire capable of accomplishing any nefarious purpose, including attacks on the homes of high-ranking FBI officials. Despite having just joined the Bureau, series hero Alex Cross winds up hunting the Wolf, which puts his family in peril. Meanwhile, his former girlfriend decides she wants custody of their young son. Patterson, a master at suspenseful twists and turns, keeps the action non-stop by constantly shifting among Alex's first-person tribulations and punchy, objectively told sequences focusing on Wolf, several ultra-wealthy computer chat group slugs who are taking The Story of O much too seriously, and the chat group members' struggling victims. The effectiveness of these quick changes is heightened by the use of dual readers. Theater and TV actor Fernandez has a warm, rich voice that provides Cross with a soulful dimension often absent from the author's prose, and O'Hare (a Tony Award winner for the hit play Take Me Out) handles the other chores, satisfactorily running the gamut from Russian-accented growls to effete simpers. Their all-pro rendering of this smartly paced thriller almost makes up for the fact that major plot strings are left tantalizingly untied.

From Booklist
Alex Cross finally took the plunge at the end of Four Blind Mice (2002) and joined the FBI. The training is a little beneath Cross, who has spent years working with the FBI on the toughest cases, but he dutifully attends classes until he's pulled out to consult on a case. Wealthy women have been disappearing around the country. The latest, a judge's wife, was snatched at a shopping mall. It appears these women (and soon several young men as well) are being abducted and sold to people who have "selected" them and paid a hefty sum. The man behind it all is a Russian known only as the Wolf. Cross gets a break when one of the buyers releases the woman he paid to have abducted, but when they track him down, they find he's committed suicide. Then a major bombshell in his personal life distracts Cross from the case: his ex-girlfriend Christine, the mother of his youngest son, has reappeared, and she wants custody. Cross' first major case with the FBI will have readers on the edge of their seats, swiftly turning the pages to the exciting showdown. Kristine Huntley

Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf
By Nicki in the Burg
Well after reading the previous books in this series and really not liking Four Blind Mice, I have to said this book probably ranked just above that one. Even though the book was a quick read, I don't really understand what's going on. The book takes you from NY, to DC, to FL, to TX, to CO then back to DC. I felt that Alex would eventually connect with "The Wolf" only he never did. I didn't like how the book ended with Christine and Little Alex or with the Wolf. Other than the ending, I have to say the book was a quick read, I still love all the same characters. I hope that John Sampson joins the FBI with Alex, that would make for some interesting writing. All in all the book wasn't totally bad, but really not one of my favorites that in a year I'll remember reading.
