Rosemary Altea appears to be a mild-mannered, middle-aged British woman. But she sees things other people can't, including her spirit guide, Grey Eagle, an American Indian. Together, the Eagle and the Rose, do healings, rescue souls, and bring comforting messages from the other side. As a child, Altea thought the voices she heard and the visions she saw meant she was crazy like her grandmother, who had been carted off to a British version of the funny farm called the Towers. Only after she was divorced and the mother of a 10-year-old did Altea find herself befriended by two psychics who helped her develop her own spiritual gifts and pave the way for Grey Eagle to enter her life. The book goes on to chronicle various case histories including both spiritual and physical healings performed by Altea and Grey Eagle. One of the refreshing things about this otherworldly tale is its surprising down-to-earthiness. Altea recognizes that her story sounds ludicrous: a tweedy British lady visited by the spirit of a serene, all-wise Indian, who even helps her with the cooking (to say nothing of the dancing Scotsman who was Altea's first guide). Still, the author's no-nonsense manner convinces readers that at least Altea believes it's true, and certainly her anecdotal evidence will make readers pause to consider their own feelings. On the other hand, this account of this particular psychic isn't really all that much different from the many others that have appeared over the years, often from small presses. And yet, the book seems almost blessed. READ THIS BOOK IN A DAY!

This book has given me hope. I guess you could describe me as a sceptic, but a curious one. I am the sort of person that requires physical proof for mediumship or psycic powers of any sort...I have to say, that although I am still waiting for the real 'physical' proof in my world, Rosemary Altea has done the best job so far of convincing me by words. The stories she tells are extremely interesting and her life story is incredible. She has a truely wonderful gift and I do not doubt her accounts whatsoever.
I am not a very good book reader, I find it difficult to get into books and rarely read. Having said that, I had this book finished in ONE DAY. I couldn't put it down. I hightly recommend this book to anyone searching to educate themselves in regard to spirituality. A very very interesting book.

For keeping an open mind..

When I was a young teenager I could read a book straight through without putting it down. I've been missing that and then when I came to reading this book it re-occured; I couldn't put it down and there was that wonderful feeling again.
Most of the time I am not on good terms with religion, it creates war if you ask me and therefor I also normally have a hard time reading books that mention God continously through out. However Rosemary has managed to get around my defenses when it comes to that and I could read this book openmindedly.
Reading openheartedly is quite easy for me, but keeping an open mind about things, can be hard sometimes. I found myself respecting her description of what she felt was a God, it was opened enough for me to think of it as something else, anything that my mind wouldn't despise so much. Maybe it helps that her descriptions of certain happenings reminded me of my own experiences. In particular I liked her description of the ether body and then when she went on to tie that together with the "out of body experiences" when you are looking down on your own body - I thought it was phenomenal how well she described it.
-If my words are different than the words used in the book, it's because I have read the Swedish translation of the book..
This is a book to discover yourself in, or to accept and respect yourself for who you are!

Charles "Chaz" Perrone fancies himself a take-charge kind of guy. So when this "biologist by default" suspects that his curvaceous wife, Joey, has stumbled onto a profitable pollution scam he's running on behalf of Florida agribusiness mogul Red Hammernut, he sets out right away to solve the problem--by heaving Joey off the deck of a luxury cruise liner and into the Atlantic Ocean, far from Key West. But--whoops!--Joey, a former swimming champ, doesn't drown. Instead, as Carl Hiaasen tells in his 10th adult novel, Skinny Dip, she makes her way back to shore, thanks both to a wayward bale of Jamaican marijuana and lonerish ex-cop Mick Stranahan (Skin Tight, 1989), and then launches a bogus blackmail campaign that's guaranteed to drive her lazy, libidinous hubby into a self-protective frenzy.

You've got to hand it to Hiaasen: He's perfected a formula for crisply written, satirical crime fiction that makes the best use of imaginatively repulsive villains, as well as less thoroughly venal scoundrels and victims who ultimately overcome their antagonists, all while stumping for the preservation of Florida's environment, particularly the Everglades. In Skinny Dip, we find Chaz (who'd rather be golfing than puttering around the "hot, buggy, funky-smelling and treacherous" reaches of nature) falsifying water samples to help Hammernut turn the 'Glades into "God’s septic tank." That scheme, though, is endangered not just by Joey's sudden disappearance, but by the suspicions of a python-loving police detective and Chaz's own outstanding inability to tame his Viagra-enhanced tumescence. Even by assigning Chaz a baby-sitter--the hulking, hirsute, and painkiller-addicted Tool--Hammernut can't keep his pet biologist out of trouble. As Joey and Stranahan unfold their revenge plot, and Tool's conscience grows in competition with Chaz's ego, the reader can only marvel at the extent of the train wreck ahead.

As much fun as Hiaasen has delivering Chaz his climactic comeuppance, what's missing from Skinny Dip is a more complex, more credible development of Mick Stranahan's character and the relationship he builds with the much younger Joey Perrone. Like Erin Grant, from Strip Tease, Joey has far more going for her than her bra-cup size; but "hero" Stranahan is of far less interest here than any of his fellow players. --J. Kingston Pierce

Hiaasen's signature mix of hilariously over-the-top villains, lovable innocents and righteous indignation at what mankind has done to his beloved Florida wilderness is all present in riotous abundance in his latest. It begins with attractive heiress Joey Perrone being tossed overboard from a cruise ship by her larcenous husband, Chaz—not for her money, which she has had the good sense to keep well away from him, but because he fears she is onto his crooked dealings with a ruthless tycoon who is poisoning the Everglades. But instead of drowning as she's supposed to, Joey stays afloat until she is rescued by moody ex-cop Mick Stranahan, a loner who has also struck out in the marriage department. Then the two together, with the unwitting aid of a suspicious cop who can't pin the attempted murder on Chaz, hatch a sadistic plot to scare that "maggot" out of what little wit he has. Even Tool, a hulking brute sent by the tycoon to keep an eye on Chaz, eventually turns against him, and much of the fun is in watching the deplorable Chaz flounder further and further in the murk, both literally and figuratively (Chaz's job, as the world's unlikeliest marine biologist, involves falsifying water pollution levels for the tycoon). Hiaasen's books are so enjoyable it's always a sad moment when they end. In this case, however, sadness is mixed with puzzlement because the book seems to end in mid-scene, with Chaz in trouble again—but is it terminal? We thought at first there were some pages missing, but Knopf says that was the ending Hiaasen intended. Odd.

In his eleventh novel, he once again draws on his intricate knowledge of Florida’s cultural and natural landscape to weave together absurd, oddball characters (the hirsute “protector” Tool in particular) and an even more ludicrous plot. It’s entertainment galore—but, like Hiaasen’s previous novels, it comments strongly on environmental devastation and eco-justice. A few critics complain that the author doesn’t fully exploit the possibilities of his set-up—a large-scale government project to restore the Everglades. The pat ending, too, leaves something to be desired. Still, in his best form, Hiaasen provides “entertainment with an emotional punch” (Orlando Sentinel).

Great way to pass time

Great story , good laughs throughout. Perfect ending for all involved. We listened to the book while we had a long ride and time passed quickly. It seemed to have a calming effect on the way I drove , Maybe everyone on the road should listen while driving . We may have less problems on the road especially during commute while we are rushing to and fro. It did not make us sleepy rather the opposite.

Wonderfully entertaining

Joey Perrone is beautiful, rich and married -- but none of that helps her to cope when her husband, Chaz, tosses her off a cruise ship on their second anniversary. Fortunately, Joey was a competition-level swimmer back in the day, and the distant lights of the Florida coastline become much more attainable when she bumps into a floating bale of discarded Jamaican marijuana, which makes a pretty good raft when the chips are down.

When she's rescued by remote island dweller and former cop Mick Stanahan, Joey chooses not to contact the authorities about her near-murder. Instead, she decides a little psychological torture is in order while she tries to figure out just why Chaz opted for homicide over a no-fault divorce.

For Chaz, who believes (with good reason) that his wife is dead, there are very few good days in his future.

"Skinny Dip" is a wonderfully entertaining story, and I owe my enjoyment of it all to Ron, a pulmonary technician at Lancaster General Hospital. Ron, upon learning of my fondness for writer Christopher Moore, extolled the wonders of Carl Hiaasen -- all while putting me through a series of rigorous breathing exercises that left me gasping and reaching for a pen to jot down the author's name.

Hiaasen doesn't spin any modern folklore into his stories -- unlike Moore with his vampires, demons, trickster gods and the like -- but otherwise, the two writers could be spiritual twins.

Besides Joey, Chaz and Mick, Hiaasen peoples his story with a colorful array of supporting characters.

Karl Rolvaag is a Minnesota Norwegian cop, miserable living in the Florida heat, who's assigned to the case after Joey "vanishes" from the cruise ship. Red Hammernut is a thuggish Florida businessman/farmer who wants nothing to do with the federal government's efforts to save the Everglades at his expense -- and he's willing to spend a great deal of money and effort to circumvent them. Earl Edward O'Toole, hirsute and beefy, is addicted to pain-relief patches, collects roadside memorials and is willing to thump people as his duty or mood requires. And then there's Maureen, a lonely, feisty old woman, dying of cancer in a nursing home, who's willing to trade her meds for a little company and isn't afraid to get a little tart where bad manners are concerned.

Hiaasen gets extra points in my book for throwing in a few brief but informative rants on the state of the Everglades and the government's too-little, too-late attempts to preserve them. I knew a bit about their all-important natural diversity, but Hiaasen taught me a thing or two about the once-massive swamp's vital impact on both the ecological and economical viability of Florida's southern end.

Heck, a little consciousness-raising rarely goes amiss. In my native Lancaster County, where rich soil, ancient trees and pure water are often sacrificed to the cause of development, it's easy to empathize.

Bottom line, I thoroughly enjoyed this refreshing "Skinny Dip" in Hiaasen's imagination, and I am eager to read more from this clever and talented writer. It looks like he's been fairly prolific in recent years, so I expect I won't have to wait too long.

This is an entertaining, affecting romance about two people brought together by circumstances not entirely of their making. Ursula Powell grew up in the shadow of Bear Mountain in north Georgia, daughter of a tenant farmer with an interest in art. Quentin Riconni grew up in Brooklyn, NY, son of an aspiring sculptor and a fiercely loyal mother. In the mid-1960s Quentin's father received a commission to create a bear sculpture for the Georgia College campus; the result was an avant-garde abstract metal piece not well received by the locals. Ursula's father used all his savings to keep the bear from destruction, which meant that he could not afford to pay the medical bills for his wife, who had died in childbirth. Meanwhile, Quentin's father quit his job to sculpt full time, deserting his wife and son. The book is written from the alternating points of view of Ursula and Quentin. Neither Susie Breck nor Dick Hill handles the Southern or the Brooklyn accents very well, however, the story line is strong enough that you'll want to listen through to the happy ending. The Riconnis live in Brooklyn, the Powells in the Georgia mountains. Richard Riconni welds scrap metal into works of art. Tom Powell raises chickens but has a deep appreciation for art and a passionate interest in bears. In 1966, a wealthy cousin of Tom's commissions Richard to create a sculpture of a bear made from local scrap metal. Most are appalled by Richard's abstract creation, but Tom loves it and eventually pays $200 that he can ill afford to save the sculpture from destruction. And that's when the bear begins to exert its strange powers. Tom's young daughter, Ursula, blames the bear for the death of her mother and her newborn brother's autism. Richard, inspired by the commission, quits his job to sculpt full time, but this plunges his wife and son, Quentin, into poverty, and Richard eventually takes his own life. Quentin, a brilliant scholar with a full scholarship to MIT, is devastated, although he later benefits from his father's posthumous fame. Then, when he discovers that the bear sculpture is on Bear Mountain, he travels there in the hope of bringing it home to his ailing mother. But, instead, Quentin finds Ursula caring for her brother, Arthur, in the stunned aftermath of their father's sudden death and realizes that Arthur has a mystical attachment to the bear. In an author's note, Smith, best known for Report from Engine Co. 82, states that this isn't a novel?although it reads like one. Smith grew up poor on Manhattan's East Side in the postwar years, in the Kips Bay neighborhood, where Italians were "guineas" and blacks "coloreds" and Sister Maureen's word was law. As the book opens, he is seven, living in a tenement with his mother, Mary, and his brother. They are on welfare. His mother moonlights as a charwoman while his father lies in a hospital, his legs useless after a mysterious accident. Smith is a gentle, religious boy who can be as obstinate as a terrier. Resentment and heartbreak surface when he learns that his father, whom he has never seen, isn't in the hospital after all but in a mental institution, and that this terrible secret?like that of being on welfare?must remain in the family. As he grows older, Smith starts smoking and drinking, drops out of high school, moves along to pot and then to heroin. A brush with the law lands him in the Air Force. After he leaves the service, he works as a cowboy in the West, but he is still drifting. He returns east, where his mother, toiling at the phone company, leads by example and he follows, into the FDNY, for which he puts out fires in a South Bronx teeming with poor people on welfare. Smith has come full circle and the irony is not lost on him. In this life-affirming reminiscence, the author thanks, through beautiful words, his mother for all her sacrifice, God for giving him a second chance and "a city that paid the rent and put an egg on the table for us when we needed it." Smith came of age in a poor, fatherless Irish Catholic family living in the New York tenements of East 56th Street. Readers will have a hard time putting down this tribute to his mother, Mary. We travel with young Dennis from his first experiences in Catholic school, cleaning erasers and feeling the unjust whacks of disciplinary rulers, to the frightening escapades of the teenage dropout who takes up with bad company. On the verge of felony, Smith joins the Air Force and then works as a cowboy before returning to New York. Unlike Malachy McCourt (A Monk Swimming, LJ 4/1/98), Smith doesn't revel in his misdeeds but always hears his mother's voice in the back of his mind. He finds his way into a profession to which he can give his all, serving as a New York fireman; he is the author of nine other works, many of them about firefighting, including Report from Engine Co. 82 (LJ 2/1/72). A poignant tale of a young Irish-American Boy .

This book by Dennis Smith is a fine prequel to his Engine Co. 82. In 82 we saw a young man dealing with the job he has chosen for himself, and a difficult job that was. In Song for Mary we see the boy who became that man. The only way a man could become a fireman is if he had great compassion for humanity. Mary, his mother, gave him this compassion. The "Song" of the title resonates throughout the book with the haunting refrain of The Rose of Tralee. I thought this memoir was as good, if not better, than those of Frank McCourt and others which have filled the bookshops recently. A MUST-READ for anyone who cherishes their Irish-American heritage or if they came of age in New York City,

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end.

To me, "A Song for Mary" very dramatically tells the story of how hard it was for many Irish and Italian families living in the East 50's of New York City during the 1950's. When you first meet Mary, on the 2nd page of the book, you immediately realize that her life and the way she raised her two sons, is worth reading about. She never had it easy, but she worked hard and had great comfort, finally, through her sons. I know, because she was my mother-in-law. I know too that Dennis, my husband's brother, has given an accurate protrayal of the neighborhood, and the way people talked, acted, and lived their lives, for we have received man letters of congratulations from neighborhood people. The Washington Post said that no one has ever writted a better book about mothers, and I am certain they were able to say that only because they believed in the book's honesty. The story is told in the voice of a seven year old, when Dennis was seven, and the voice changes in small degrees as Dennis gets older, through the tough, brutal language of a street teen to the reserved, introspective voice of the young adult. It is a book that stays interesting and exciting from beginning to end. I may be prejudiced, but I still know how to evaluate a book, and "A Song for Mary" is a good read.

An American "Angela's Ashes"

Dennis Smith's "A Song for Mary" is a powerful, emotionally gripping memoir that is one of the finest published in recent years. Along with Pete Hamill's "A Drinking Life", and Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes", it belongs in the first rank of great memoirs written by Irish-American authors. Speaking of Hamill, it is a Manhattan version of "A Drinking Life", replete with the chaos and woe associated with growing up poor and Irish in New York City. Smith's vivid prose conjurs up the Irish-American neighobrhood that was once the East Side of Midtown Manhattan. We see a young, bright Dennis Smith almost drawn into a life of petty crime, yet saved by love and devotion from his mother and local Catholic priests. Eventually the book ends positively, with his arrival as the rookie fireman at Engine Company 82, setting the stage for the events he described two decades ago in his bestselling memoir "Report from Engine Company 82". I am surprised that this fine book hasn't earned the wide audience it deserves. Anyone who has fallen in love with Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes" should also fall in love with Dennis Smith's "A Song for Mary".

Marvellously written

I started reading Octavia Butler's book when I was at school in Atlanta. A friend lent me a copy of "Wild Seed" and I was riveted from page one and could not put it down. Octavia Butler is one of the best science-fiction writers to come out of the 20th century. Her pages are filled with characters that are believable even though she often puts them in `out-of-this-world situations.' In "Parable of Sower" she introduces the reader to Lauren, a young girl with the unenviable ability to feel the pain of others. A "talent" her father has taught her to hide from others outside her family. The world Lauren is living in is slowly descending into anarchy and Lauren, is living with her family in a small enclave, protected by her Minister father, who thinks one day everything will go back to normal. Lauren however knows that the walls that protect them will not stand forever, and she prepares to leave before it is too late but it is already too late and her family and friends are raped, murdered and mutilated by a vicious gang of drug-addicts. With two fellow survivors Lauren sets off on a quest that will lead them halfway across America, gathering others along the way, such as two young prostitutes on the run from their pimp father, a middle aged Academic, an orphaned child but to name a few. A tentative alliance is forged, one that will enable them all to live through the dreadful times ahead. Lauren carries with her a strange new belief, that of Earthseed, a creed that will one-day lead to the stars and a life beyond a corrupted earth. As she and her slowly growing band of followers' search for sanctuary she preaches Earthseed to them, and soon begins to recruit coverts among her fellow travellers. "Parable of the Sower," is a haunting novel of a world in transition, where only the strong, the cruel and the vicious survive. The weak and the sick are either killed for enslaved. As Lauren and her followers' head for a farm where they hope to find a home, the young girl is witness to history repeating itself. Slavery is making a come back and people like herself who can feel the pain of others are being sought by unscrupulous men and women who have seen the benefit of such having workers that are in tune with the agonies of others. This is a dark novel of how easy it is for humanity to be bought to its knees, but it also a novel about dreams, desire, and the need for a new future. Earthseed might just be the answer to a dying planet's needs and Lauren could be the Prophet who makes it happen. Octavia Butler's writing is atmospheric, exciting, romantic and there is never a dull moment from the time you turn the first page. A marvellous book and I highly recommend it for first time science-fiction readers, as it is easy to get in to and understand.

Disturbingly timely

It was 1993 when Butler created this dystopian sci-fi vision of Los Angeles circa 2025, whose closeness to the evils of present-day social and environmental ills is hauntingly uncanny. Through her teenaged black protagonist she offers a positive vision of the future (sort of), so it's not unremittingly dark. One wishes the prose were a little more elegant, but the ideas here are brilliantly provocative. Like a philosophical action movie. Strongly recommended.

Wish Amazon offered more Black authors in this genre. This book kept making me turn the page. I could hardly put it down but I had work and had to other things that required me to look up from my kindle. The book also made me put it down in disbelief and fearful of what the next page would reveal. Did I want to know, did I not? Could I take one more death? Did want to know who was hooking up next? I gobbled this book up and can't wait to get more books by Miss Butler and other authors like her.

Murder in the Northwest

This is an extremely well-written novel that moves along quite rapidly. The chapters are fairly short, so that the reader can put the book down (if he or she findss that possible) after just several pages, and continue reading later. I couldn't do that: I was hooked from the initial murder, and read my way all the way through it until the (expected, by me) ending. The characters well fairly well drawn, and the author creates quite a bit of sympathy for the female protagonist. If you want to spend some hours being captivated by a tremendous thriller, you will do well to pick up this book!

Plots and Subplots Thicken at Every Turn

This is a fast-paced convoluted twist of a thriller. We have our main character, lawyer Dana Hill, whose brother James is killed in an apparent blundered robbery attempt. But when she is cleaning out her brother's house, Dana finds a rare, custom-made earring that leads her to suspect there was more going on than just a bungled robbery.

She teams up with the detective in charge of the investigation, Michael Logan. Together they try to track down what really happened, who did what and most importantly, why.

The investigation leads Dana to Hawaii, and into the world of politics and high society in the Washington State area.

There are too many bodies cropping up to lead to the misconception that this was a random act.

The writing is relevant and believable, leading one to keep reading to see where the plot goes next.

Along with the main plot there are subplots, Dana's issues with breast cancer, a failed marriage, her conflicts with her employer and of course the relationship between her and Detective Logan.

The background scenery makes one want to visit Seattle, if nothing more than to see the landscape and experience the majesty of the area revealed in the text.

This is a good book to curl up with on a rainy afternoon and just keep reading until the end.

Damage Easily Controlled

This is an interesting novel incorporating murder, cancer, divorce, politics and the law. I know I have excluded other themes but I have listed the main ones and this is the slight weakness with this thriller. There are too many issues and I believe the reader would be better served with concentration on a few less. Dana Hill, twin, attorney extraordinaire, perfect mother, and possible breast cancer victim is an overworked working mother whose twin brother is killed in a brutal attack. She is having severe marital problems, her husband, Grant, does not behave well in any scene. He is a total jerk and we wonder why she ever married this loser. Anyway, Dana, in her grief-stricken state, is bound and determined to find the killer of her brother. Without revealing any more of the plot, Dana is able to resolve many issues which involve politics, spousal abuse and priceless jewelry design. I actually believe the most interesting part of this book was the Acknowledgements section by the author who gives us a fascintating background into his own family.

Life Saving

I am an RN with Post-Polio Syndrome and live in rural Arkansas. I did an in-service training on Post-Polio Syndrome for our small regional hospital and spent weeks accumulatiing research for the training. Then I ordered the "Polio Paradox". It contained all of the research material I had spent so much time collecting and much, much more. The article on "polio belly" was informative and well-written. I shared it with the gastroenterologist that is treating my "polio belly" and he was very interested. He had treated a number of folks with PPS and wanted to know the etiology behind the problems they were having.
Dr. Bruno has spent years conducting research, and taking surveys, and histories of polio survivors. His book presents this material in a non-threatening, readable way, yet clearly identifies treatment protocol and lifestyle options for the survivor and for the medical professional they deal with.
Most of us with Post-Polio Syndrome are acutely familiar with our health issues but resistant to lifestyle changes. Dr. Bruno helps with the choices we must make to continue to be independent, and he does it in a gently yet persuasive manner.
Dr. Bruno uses a wheelchair himself, though not as a result of polio. He is intimately aquainted with the challenges of disability and sensitive to the emotional needs of his readers.
Read it.............it might save your life!

One of the better self-help books I've looked at...

My husband brought this book home from the newspaper, where they had put out on a table all the books that a variety of publishers had sent them hoping to have their books read by a reviewer. I am no newspaper reviewer, and I never had polio. But I've been interested in post-polio syndrome ever since I went into medical school and read some historical books on Salk, and papers on the re-emergence of problems for those people who had been exposed to polio. As someone who had rubella and who as a member of an internation deaf/HOH group where many had rubella, I can see significant similarities between post-polio and the possibility of latent impact of the rubella virus. So when my husband brought this book home, I read it.
I am always a little hesitant when doctors or Ph.D.s put many different diseases under an umbrella of one cause or one virus. This happened too much when AIDS emerged, and it continues to happen with diseases such as Chronic Fatigue syndrome. I did some checking into the papers of these guys and also the actual 'place' where Bruno helps those with post-polio (though it seems that there are current problems with their website and maybe the association of this group with the current medical establishment). If the information in this book is of worth, it is because not that all these diseases and problems are from the same cause (the polio virus), but rather because they are all manifestations of latent viral damage that can be taken care of in some of the same ways that Bruno suggests.
It is very apparent that most polio survivors, and indeed, many survivors of childhood illnesses tend to overdo and overuse their muscles and their neurons in order to make up for the deficits caused by their polio. It is also sensible that polio left so few motor neurons, that when a survivor makes it to forty years and they've been dependent upon a few remaining motor neurons and overworked them, that those neurons finally just give out. This has obviously been checked and rechecked in medical journals (the book gives the actual papers applicable in the back of the book so people can read them for themselves.)
I don't know if all of Bruno's tricks or suggestions will work. He is a humorous writer, one that can explain scientific information without being condescending. Some of the information he gives is just plain common sense. Some of the information needs to be drummed into the heads of polio survivors just because they keep trying so hard and in the process damage themselves more.
This is a worth-while self-help book for this group, and I strongly encourage those with polio to give it a glance. It may help, and it certainly cannot hurt.

Dr. Bruno's style of writing has humor and wit that makes his book easy to read and so interesting it is impossible to put down! It truly is the bible of polio survivors. Finally understanding what has happened to your body and learning your physical symptoms, that no doctor has ever been able to really treat, is the result of polio comes almost as a welcome relief. Polio survivors can begin to feel empowered as they learn how to manage their symptoms and rejoice as pain begins to melt away. You will want to read and reread as it is impossible to absorb the wealth of knowledge Dr. Bruno shares in his book. Buy several copies, one for every doctor you know and one for your family. All persons suffering from conditions of muscle weakness and fatigue will be empowered by Dr. Bruno.

White, editor-in-chief at Cosmopolitan, captures all the hype and cattiness of the magazine world and offers an intriguing mystery as well. Her sleuth is Bailey Weggins, a thirtysomething feature writer for Gloss magazine, specializing in crime stories. Bailey's career has been built in part on loyalty to Cat Jones, her capable, beautiful, bitchy boss. So when Cat wants Bailey to find out who murdered her nanny, Bailey feels obligated to try. Then Bailey learns that the intended victim was Cat herself. Unlike in many mysteries, where the crime is obviously too complex for an amateur to solve, this puzzle manages to be challenging but not patently out of Bailey's range. In fact, readers will nervously follow the clues right along with the heroine. White is also very good at painting her world--the life of a single woman in high-powered New York--and this glamorous setting should attract a certain type of young woman reader, just the type who would read a magazine called Gloss. Glamour and passion were always the fashion

Cat Jones, editor-in-chief of the Cosmo-esque Gloss magazine, goes to confront her nanny early one Sunday morning, and when she doesn't get a response to the live in apartment, who does she call? No, not the police, or her husband. Cat calls Bailey Weggins, friend and freelance crime journalist at Gloss magazine.
When Bailey enters the nanny's apartment, she finds the 22-year old nanny dead. And Cat, always the editor-in-chief, assigns Baily to mirror the police investigation and determine what is going on.
When I read the pre-releases for IF LOOKS COULD KILL ("Bridget Jones Meets Nancy Drew") I thought it sounded like a fun book. I've enjoyed good mysteries (such as THE ALPHABET MYSTERY SERIES by Sue Grafton) and I liked THE NANNY DIARIES, so I thought a marriage between the two would be fun.
Unfortunately, we get a fairly standard mystery, and somewhat pedestrian plotting.
Bailey Weggins is supposed to be observant, beseeched by her friend Cat to involve herself in this mystery because of her unique way of looking at things. Mostly, Bailey looks at clothes. Every character is first described by what they're wearing.
Bailey is also into good food. Each chapter has her hankering after a good penne putenesca or a fine rissoto. I almost expect for the recipes and restaurant reviews to be included as an appendix.
Also, the motivations of the main characters here are somewhat forced. Why does Cat choose Bailey, of all people, to help her out with this? When Bailey senses herself in danger, why doesn't she just beg off somehow?
All in all, this was a disappointing entry into what will probably turn out to be a fairly average mystery series. If you like mysteries in general, or if you are really in to behind the scenes glimpses of glamour magazines, then this book is for you.
Otherwise, take a look at some of the other beach reading out there.

I thought this book was the perfect summer read.

I am an new mother and really don't have time to read anymore. This book was just what I was looking for. It's a fast, easy read and I was surprised to find out who the killer was. Yes, lots of food is described in the book and I did find myself craving cappucino's as I read it, but I did enjoy the book. It's not really to be taken seriously, but I got several laughs throughout the read with my favorite being Cat saying she didn't need any security - what she needed was a food taster, but that went out of style 500 years ago!!!!
I sure hope we can look forward to more Bailey Weggins' mysteries???????

But strange things are happening: barbed-wire crosses and dead animals are left around the cabin. A Sanity Saver and a Plain-Old Good Read

Let me start off by prefacing that in an airport, where one is the required two hours early for departure and inherits an additional rascally three-hour delay in said departure, one desperately needs an escape. Five hours literally flew by when I cracked the pages of this book. That, in a nutshell, made it a spectacular read. Engrossing, witty and packed with characters a reader can sink their literary teeth into is the slightly longer version, but gives one an even better idea of all this book has to offer.

Kitty Norville needs a break. Going national about her furry side isn't the only reason. She's got a writing gig now too and a secluded mountain cabin seems the ideal retreat. Having a severe case of writer's block though, Kitty is distracted to say the least...especially when dead animals keep showing up to decorate her front porch. The locals are nice enough, though not particularly keen to have the nation's first werewolf at their doorsteps. Naturally, it seems someone wants her gone. When Cormac, werewolf hunter extraordinaire, shows up with an injured Ben (her lawyer) in tow, it's all Kitty can do to hold down the fort, much less write about it. Witchcraft and evil skin walkers compound the situation and Kitty begins to wonder if any of them will get out of this alive, much less walk the right side of the law.

Having never read the series before, I was prepared to be a little lost. Surprisingly, and pleasantly enough, I was glad to read a book that made sense from its own perspective while still gleaning enough information about the past two books (Kitty and the Midnight hour first, then Kitty Goes to Washington) to want to double back. Kitty is an interesting character, and her special twist, that of the first werewolf to exit the closet, puts a whole new perspective on the werewolf story. Being that the story takes place mainly at the cabin, I was also prepared for the story to get a little stale, but not so. There's plenty of action to keep readers turning the pages. There's a slight romantic edge, and I suspect a carryover from past books with one of the characters, though it's not the main focus of this primarily fantasy minded novel. I'm glad I had this book with me during my stay at the airport. Not only did it save my sanity, but it made me laugh, made me chew my lips in suspense and made me an all out fan of Vaughn's first person writing. Looking forward to the others in the series now.

If you enjoyed the first two books in the series, you will probably enjoy Ms. Vaughn's newest effort. She writes a great story, but is not always comfortable to read. Real life, if you will, in a fantasy world of were animals, vampires and magic.

I do appreciate Kitty's personal werewolf journey, it is fascinating, but to be honest, I'm burning out. Every step forward that Kitty takes, she falls two steps backward in getting a handle on her changing life. In the first book, Kitty and the Midnight Hour, she gained recognition for a brilliant radio persona, then lost her home, the security of her pack and her best friend and mentor. In the second book, Kitty Goes to Washington, Kitty saved a vampire queen, found love and support in the were community, did a great job in testifying before congress, then was violently outed on television, losing her security and anonymity. Without giving away spoilers, this novel follows the same pattern. Win a bit, lose more than she gains. A slap in the face, undeserved and now expected.

Kitty Takes a Holiday is well-crafted, well written, well researched in the new magic she introduces, and an interesting read. I predict great success for the continuing books in this series. Regardless of all that going for it, and with my greatest respect toward Ms. Vaughn and Kitty, three slaps and I'm done.

And Now for a Brief Interlude. . .

In the third novel featuring Kitty Norville, radio personality and werewolf, Kitty takes a break from her job to write her memoirs (and possibly hide out from the world for a while). She rents a small cabin out in the woods in CO, where she expects to find some peace and quiet, but her tranquility is soon shattered. Someone starts leaving gruesome gifts on her property, hoping to drive "the werewolf" out of town. Also, in a surprising little plot twist, a friend appears on her doorstep, seeking Kitty's expert assistance.

This book is more low-key than the first two in the series. No one's been hired to kill Kitty or kidnap her this time around, and she's not battling her pack or facing a trial before Congress. The novel isn't devoid of action, though. There are evil spells to be dealt with, a rogue werewolf on the loose, plus the public and personal fallout from each. For the most part, though, the novel has a more introspective feel to it than the previous two. Kitty, on leave from work and thrust into the role of caregiver, takes stock of herself and her life. At times, the novel almost felt like a 3-person play, and it contained some emotionally-charged and revealing conversations.

I liked this book a lot. The author presents the reader with several realistic consequences to `playing with the monsters,' which is a refreshing change from the norm (where the hero generally rushes in, saves the day without much collateral damage, and keeps the local law enforcement completely in the dark). I like Kitty as a heroine because she's atypical, too. She's not always strong - her wolf isn't exactly an alpha one - but she doesn't overcompensate by pretending to be tough, nor does she pretend to have all of the answers. I like the fact that she's honest with herself. She falters from time to time, but she's ultimately a survivor, and, little by little, she's learning to be strong.

My one quibble with the series would be the lack of well-developed, recurring secondary characters (probably a consequence of Kitty's nomadic lifestyle). After this book, however, that might be changing a bit. And hopefully, some day, Kitty will find a home.

If you're a fan of the paranormal adventure/mystery, urban fantasy/horror (with a dollop of romance) genre mix, you should give these books a try. They're a fun ride.
