Inspirational
By Mary
This is the inspirational story of the life of holocaust survivor Dr. Ruth Westheimer. Throughout an early life of adversity, Dr. Ruth keeps on soldering through without a hint of self-pity.
At the age of eight, Dr. Ruth was evacuated, with hundreds of other children, from Germany to Switzerland. She lived in an orphanage for Jewish children, and did heavy house-cleaning for half the day and attended school for the other half. She never saw her parents or grandmother again.
At 17 Dr. Ruth emigrated to Israel to live on a Kibbutz, where she was exploited. Living in a tent, her job was cleaning full-time, and no one suggested forther schooling. After a year she left the Kibbutz and supported herself in various jobs and attended school.
The account of her years in France and her early years in the US is riviting. Dr. Ruth's strong spirit shining through every situation is inspirational.

What a woman!
By meiringen
Great autobiography of Dr. Ruth! So many things that I didn't know about her: fled Nazi Germany at age 10, never saw her family again, lived on a kibbutz in Israel, was a soldier for the Haganah, then came to the USA, where she found her career and true love.
Very open and candid, and also tragic at times. It's a book I couldn't put down, once I started reading it! Highly recommended!

From Publishers Weekly
Strongly influenced by Benjamin Franklin, Smith, CEO of a Utah consulting company, offers insightful pronouncements on America's time fragmentation. "Life is getting more and more hectic. The daily treadmill is accelerating, and we have to run faster and faster just to stay in one place." His recommendations for regaining control of time, events and hence life are intriguing, as are his suggestions on goal setting, planning and negative behavior traits. Yet Smith's sharply focused managerial constructs become muddled with material on "life management," aimed at achieving "inner peace--the transcendant feeling of fulfillment and well-being." And his commercial endorsements of his company's seminars and products are irksome . Author tour.

From Booklist
Smith is CEO of Franklin Quest, a company that conducts time-management seminars for corporations, organizations, and government agencies, reaching as many as 20,000 persons per month. It also sells day-planner scheduling books as an integral part of the time-management system it touts. This highly successful company was founded by Smith a little more than 10 years ago and was modeled on the self-improvement system outlined in Benjamin Franklin's autobiography. Smith argues that there is much more to managing time than getting things done. He preaches that only by understanding one's own value system can one decide what matters most, set priorities, and accomplish one's goals. The result is not only a better-organized life but a more fulfilling one. By focusing on time, Smith has provided a self-improvement book that almost everyone can use--and benefit from. David Rouse

The life-changing experience!
By max power
I bought this book by 'accident' since it was included in the Franklin Covey daily planner package. I always thought the to-do list was a good thing that people invented even though back then, at the end of the day, I didn't really feel that satisfied after all items had been crossed out.
This book totally turned the notion around. In order to experience inner-peace, the to-do list, which they called prioritized daily activities, has to be tied directly to your governing values.
All the ideas in this book are principle-oriented. That means they have been tested in the real world to bring happiness in life - if you apply them deliberately. It has changed my life two years ago, and hopefully it will change yours.

Amazon.com Review
Since his first appearance in 1992's Edgar-winning The Black Echo, Detective Hieronymous "Harry" Bosch has joined Dennis Lehane's Patrick and Angie, George Pelecanos's Derek Strange, and Greg Rucka's Atticus Kodiak in the pantheon of new-school hard-boiled detectives. Rather than giving Bosch a clever gimmick (like Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme, who is a quadriplegic), Michael Connelly embraces the noir archetype: Bosch, an L.A. homicide detective, is a chain-smoking loner who refuses to play by his superiors' rules. Although he has quit smoking, Harry's still the same tightlipped outsider, taking each crime as a personal affront as he tries to cleanse his beloved city of the darkness he sees engulfing it.

In City of Bones, Connelly's eighth Bosch title, Bosch and his well-dressed partner, Jerry Edgar, are working to identify a child's skeleton, buried for 20 years in the forest off Hollywood's Wonderland Drive, and to bring the killer to belated justice. For Bosch this is more than just another homicide, as the mystery child, beaten and abandoned, comes to represent much of what he sees as evil in his city. Add in a tragic love affair with a fellow cop, complications from overzealous media, and the growing feeling that he's fighting a losing battle about which no one cares, and the usually stoic Bosch is pushed to his limits. This isn't the strongest plot Connelly has concocted for Bosch, but it leads to an ending the whole series has been building toward. The conclusion may not shock longtime fans, but it will leave them wondering where the series will go from here. --Benjamin Reese

From Publishers Weekly
Harry Bosch is at the top of his form which is great news for Connelly fans who might have been wondering how much life the dour, haunted LAPD veteran had left in him. His latest adventure is as dark and angst-ridden as any of Bosch's past outings, but it also crackles with energy especially in the details of police procedure and internal politics that animate virtually every page. What other crime writer could make such dramatic use of the fact that the front door of a house trailer swings out rather than in, creating problems for a two-man team of detectives? Who else would create to such credible narrative effect an egotistic celebrity coroner who jeopardizes an investigation because she lets a TV camera crew from Court TV follow her around, or an overage female rookie cop so in love with danger that she commits an unthinkable act? When the bones of an abused 12-year-old boy who disappeared in 1980 turn up in the woods above Hollywood (near a street named Wonderland, where former governor Jerry Brown used to live), the case stirs up Bosch's memories of his own troubled childhood. Also, as his captain so aptly points out, Harry is the LAPD's prime "shit magnet," an investigator who attracts muck and trouble wherever he goes. So it's no great surprise when the investigation takes a couple of nasty turns, right up through the last chapter. Connelly is such a careful, quiet writer that he can slow down the story to sketch in some relatively minor characters a retired doctor, a couple who lived through their foster children without missing a beat. (One-day laydown Apr. 16)Forecast: Connelly doesn't need much help in hitting the charts, but Little, Brown is going all out anyway, with a massive television, radio and print ad campaign, transit ads in New York and a 10-city author tour. Expect blockbuster sales and blockbuster satisfaction.

Fast paced, engaging police procedural.
By Silver Springer
I have heard lots of good comments about the Harry Bosch novels and I was not disappointed with this seventh book of the series. Bosch is a hard boiled homocide detective in the Hollywood division of the LAPD who gets a call that a dog has discovered a human bone. The investigation uncovers a 20 year old murder of a 12 year-old boy who was the victim of child abuse. As the case proceeds, Bosch meets and becomes involved with a rookie cop named Julia Brasher, who has an idealistic view of police work.
Some information leaks and false clues initially sidetrack the investigation but slowly the victim is identified and his short and tortured life revealed. Connelly draws his characters with fine strokes and his development of the details of the police procedures which are key to solving cases was really fascinating to me. Understanding the murder book, how warrants were drawn up and served, and details behind the forensic investigation added to my enjoyment of the story.
False directions provide intrigue but I was a little disappointed with the unsatisfying way the murderer was revealed and dealt with.
All in all though, a fast paced (I read it in one 24 hour period), and very enjoyable read.

Too Many Ghosts
By Marc Ruby™
I bought 'City of Bones' when it first came out, but put off reading it for a bit. The last couple of Connelly's novels about Detective Harry Bosch seemed a bit off pace, so I was waiting for a tolerant moment. Once I started reading I discovered that my premonitions were wrong, and that this was going to be a high water mark in the eight volume series.
Michael Connelly has a trick of creating an introspective mood without actually making his characters become solipsistic, and 'City of Bones' at its deepest level is about Harry Bosch coming to grips with his own beliefs and needs. This subtext threads its way through a case involving the 20-year-old corpse of a young boy found buried in a small plot of woods. Cases this old are rarely soluble, but somehow just enough information keeps coming to the surface to keep Bosch and his partner, Jerry Edgar, working away at the case. Gradually Bosch becomes fixated on the case as its ramifications begin to have echoes in his own life.
One of the key factors in Bosch's character development is a new relationship with rookie police officer Julia Brasher. She is the officer on duty at the murder site, and is drawn into the investigation. This relationship becomes the model for all the other relationships in the book; especially those Bosch has with his partner and his work. In the end it triggers something unexpected in the older detective, and will eventually cause him to make some surprising decisions.
Beyond the character level, the plot is tightly drawn and well paced. Generally, a story that turns on forensic police procedure is interesting rather than exciting, but Connelly has goes to great lengths to prove that this does not have to be the case. There is a surfeit of plot twists and the high emotional pitch will keep the reader on tenterhooks - a delightful form of torture, too rarely experienced in the present.
Obviously, I enjoyed the book. I found myself intentionally slowing down my reading speed in order to extend my pleasure with a writer whose minimalist style always seems to have more to say than the efforts of wordier contemporaries. This is a milestone in the Harry Bosch series, but hopefully not its last, shining moment.

It really left me unsatisfied
By MadHatter
Lets start off with telling you how much i love Michael Connelly's books, but then this one just left me not satisfied at all.

first off, the book got me really hooked, i really liked it alot!

when a simple walk out with the dog turns up a bone from the woods, and investigation goes out to search for where the bone comes from. very good with some details and such, but then the only negative of this book is that it left too many questions unanswerd. I didn't like it the way it ended, when they find or think this person is the kids killer, then bam...what the?? i really wanted to know what went on! if i give any more information about it, then i would basically be giving away the book.

its a good read, but if your the type that doesn't like to dwell on why this wasn't answered or what happened to cause this killing...then this book isn't for you.

From Library Journal
Eight-year-old Jos Musey's childhood ends when his parents' merchant ship falls prey to pirates and slavers. Destined to be the personal slave of his captor, Jos escapes only to find himself a prisoner of the strits, an alien race at war with humanity. Trained as a spy by his captors, Jos is released to become a human weapon but the war he fights is a war to achieve his own destiny. Winner of the Warner Aspect First Novel Contest, Lowachee's sf debut provides a poignant tale of survival and courage reminiscent of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. Polished storytelling and convincing worldbuilding make this a good selection for most sf collections.

From Booklist
The latest winner of Warner Aspect's first-novel contest makes highly successful use of a thoroughly familiar plot line. When pirates destroy the merchant starship that is eight-year-old Jos' home and kill the rest of his family, he is enslaved with the rest of the children. Determined and desperate, he escapes on an alien world, only to end up in the hands of the strint, aliens at war with humanity, whom Jos was brought up to hate and fear. They raise him, train him to be a warrior and spy, and eventually send him back among his own people. His ostensible mission is to learn more about humanity to help end the war. But he is dubious, sharpening his internal conflict of loyalties. The book is consistently good, especially at rendering Jos' viewpoint at different ages, and seasoned sf readers may look on it as an update of Heinlein's Citizen of the Galaxy (1957). As for the winning author, anyone who is this good the first time out demands to be heard from again. Roland Green

Good, but Weird
By Steven Owens
Good in the sense that it's very well written, the character development is engaging.
Weird in that you're basically inside the head of a young boy from age eight to seventeen, as he goes through various sorts of interstellar war-torn hell and is brutalized, emotionally disturbed, and deals (not too well) with all of these issues. All in all, not a pretty book, but definitely worth reading. In that sense, it reminds me quite a bit of some of William Barton's works.
Besides the heavy subject matter, the book spends a lot of time and probably the great majority of the text dealing with the boy's internal mental state - albeit always through his thoughts and reactions to what's going on around him. This, again, gives the book a more contemplative feeling than I normally prefer (and is why it reminds me of Barton's work).
However, it was gripping enough that I had trouble putting it down and finished it fairly rapidly.
The basic backdrop of the book is a sort of just-barely-hot war between an alien race and humanity. In theory the two races had a brief war and came up with a treaty, including a DMZ. However, the treaty is falling apart as the humans raid the alien's colony worlds and the aliens raid the human stations and fight the occasional deep space skirmish with human warcraft.
The alien race is definitely at a disadvantage but is managing to stay in the game and even kick ass, largely because of the corruption and disorganization of the human race's bureacratic galactic empire. The aliens also have the help of "sympathizers", humans who are taking the aliens side. The earth politicians are barely in control of the farther reaches of their empire and the star-faring warships that keep the war going. They're definitely not in control of the pirates that
raid and devastate merchant ships, killing the adults and enslaving the survivors.
The book starts when the merchant ship Mukudori, home of the main character, eight-year-old Jos Musey, is pretty much sacked by a pirate ship. The boy ends up in the hands of the pirates, but it doesn't end there. He later ends up in the hands of the aliens, who train him to be a spy and assassin, then put him to work. Along the way he has a lot of problems figuring out who to trust and when, including himself.
One tip: the first chapter is all told in second person; i.e. "You do this. You remember that. etc". Normally this bugs the hell out of me, and would be enough for me to instantly relegate the book to the trash pile, but I flipped ahead a bit and saw that it was just a literary device for the opening chapter. I pretty much read through it and did my best to ignore it. After reading the entire book and looking back, I can even see the real reasoning behind it (and it's not just fun with literary devices). Trust me, this book is well worth the time.
However, I recommend having some more optimistic reading material queued up behind it.
Come to think of it, I just figured out the best way I can concisely sum up my feelings about this book. I felt, after finishing the last page of this book, a great deal like I felt as I walked out of the movie theater after seeing _Schindler's List_.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
A couple of comments from other reviewers were sufficiently off the mark that they deserve some comment. Doing so involves some spoilers, but since the other reviewers already spoiled them...
One reviewer complained that we don't find out that Jos was actually sexually abused until near the end of the book. I think the reviewer sort of misses the point. This book is in part a mystery - the mystery is what happened to make Jos the sort of person he is. We don't find out easily because this book is told from Jos' point of view, and Jos doesn't admit to himself because he's having trouble dealing with the topic (big surprise there).
Recognizing this also illuminates the reasoning for the second-person introduction. Jos' use of the second person in describing his early history to Nikolas (and later presumably) Azarcon) is a way of displacing himself from the events, of protecting his ignorance. I still think second-person sucks, and I really think using it for the first portion of the book was a tactical mistake, but I understand Lowachee's reasons for using it. I can't really say it would be the same book without it.
One reviewer complained about "all the touchy-feely stuff". I can't say I was really happy about that myself, but I also can't say that Jos's issues with personal space and physical affection could have been conveyed any other way. I think the reviewer is missing the forest for the trees in the way. The space opera backdrop is mainly a context for the exploration of the forces that shape the main character.

Finally, a book worth reading
By Shaz
I don't know about you, but I get tired of getting my hopes up that a book will be great, only to be disappointed time and time again. This book finally broke that cycle of despair. It starts out with approx. 40 pages written in the second person perspective. And here's the shocker - it's not just a gimmick; it actually works. You are seeing the world through the eyes of an 8 year child whose ship (yes, a space ship) is attacked and destroyed by pirates. The adults are killed and the children are enslaved. The use of the second person is a powerful device that pulled me straight into the story - not an easy task with this jaded reader.
But it's what happens next, and what continues happening that keeps you turning pages. Characters acting like real people. They don't always make the right decisions, and you don't always agree with them. Heck, you don't even always *like* all of them! But all of them, even the pirates, are understandable and seem real. The characters grow and develop. They get hurt and develop emotional scars. They hurt each other, and they heal. When I finished the book, I put it down, said "wow" and immediately re-read it again. I haven't done that since I finished Lord of the Rings almost 20 years ago.

A great emotional impact
By Amazon Customer
Don't be deceived: this is no sweeping space opera, for all that it has its share of action. It's much better: a thoughtful story about the effects of war on a young boy, Jos, an early casualty when pirates attack his ship. The book opens on this scene, breathing you into the fright of a child who is trying to stay hidden: "You didn't see their faces from where you hid behind the maintenance grate. Smoke worked its fingers through the tiny holes and stroked under your nose and over your eyes, forcing you to stifle breaths, to blink, and to cry."
(For those who cannot bear the second person, bear it. Lowachee soon switches to the less immediate--though no less poignant--first person.)
He is inevitably torn away from his homeship and has his childhood ripped apart so brutally that even when the chance comes for him to rediscover trust, he does not believe it.
Lowachee paints no pretty pictures about humanity. It is war and the lives of soldiers that she depicts. Although she offers no cosmetics for the grimmer parts of her story--the way Jos and others he encounters are treated--she uses a delicacy that left me all the more horrified and at the same time drew me toward the characters through its lack of crude detail. Much of Jos' life is a tragedy, where each thing he comes to value only becomes another loss. And all throughout he searches for a home, the place where he can belong.
The writing is beautifully taut, whether during battle or during introspection, reflecting how Jos is always on guard. At one point I came up from between the pages for a gasp of air and had to orient myself in the real world--I'd been that firmly rooted within Jos' mind. This is an emotional story with its characters vividly rendered, and it deserves a look by anyone searching for a powerful read.

From Library Journal
Not all "free agents" are highly paid athletes whose main skills are dunking a basketball or hitting a baseball. In fact, as Pink (contributing editor, Fast Company) reveals, over 25 million Americans are now self-employed, and fewer than one in ten works for a Fortune 500 company. This excellent work synthesizes the seismic shift in attitudes about and patterns of work in the economy from the early 1950s era of William Whyte's The Organization Man to today's independent worker, the free agent. Pink astutely summarizes what this major shift in the definition of employment now means to millions of Americans and explains the various types of free agents (including soloists, temps, and those involved in their own microbusiness). Other chapters cover examples of how self-sufficiency works so well for numerous life situations, while in many cases free-agency employment does not work well at all. This work may not be rooted in empirical research, but Pink's thorough review of the literature and his extensive roadwork interviewing hundreds of independent workers successfully merges psychosocial data with pragmatic reality. This major contribution to better understanding the trend toward independent contract work is highly recommended for all university libraries and larger public libraries. Dale Farris, Groves, TX

From Booklist
With Manpower, Inc., the temporary agency, the nation's largest private employer and one-quarter to one-third of American workers operating as "free agents," this author offers analysis of this "new economy" and advice on how to succeed in it. The Fast Company cover story that Pink, a former Gore chief speechwriter, wrote on the growth of "free agency" produced so much feedback that he traveled across the country with his young family to interview "America's new independent workers" for this book. Pink examines facts and figures, explores the roots of increasing free agency, and considers the new work ethic, employment contract, and time clock it generates. He outlines the structure of free-agent work and major disruptions (especially for involuntary free agents) and offers some predictions about how this new paradigm will affect institutional arrangements, including education, "e-tirement," real estate, finance, and politics. Pink understands how busy free agents are; each chapter closes with "The Box," which punchily summarizes the chapter's key points. Mary Carroll

exceeded my high expectations
By Arnold Kling
Free Agent Nation exceeded my expectations, which were high to begin with. This is not just a drawn-out version of Pink's classic cover story in Fast Company. It reflects extensive research and provides many surprising insights and interesting predictions.
This is not a book you can polish off in an hour or two. It is difficult to convey in a brief review the depth and richness of Free Agent Nation.
Pink demonstrates that free agents are a large and growing share of the work force. He describes some of the economic forces contributing to this phenomenon, but he finds that free agents themselves explain their reasons for leaving the corporate world in psychological terms: a desire for freedom, authenticity, accountability, and flexible concepts of success.
Pink shows that free agents have their own unique perspectives and solutions to such challenges as security, workplace relationships, career advancement, and work-family balance. For example, he describes the way that peer networks are providing the type of career support that formerly came from within large corporations.
Whether you like it or not, the gravitational forces between individuals and large corporations are weakening. In the future, how will business be re-organized? How will the economy function? Daniel Pink asks the big questions, and he comes up with a lot of fascinating answers. I expect Free Agent Nation to become the most talked-about nonfiction book of the year.

Powerful Insights for Free Agents AND Employers
By Roger E. Herman
Reading this book was irritating! I've developed a habit of turning down the corners of pages when something on that page is particularly interesting to me. I discovered that I was turning down practically every page of Free Agent Nation! Daniel Pink has accomplished what most readers of non-fiction books desire: he's put solid value on almost every page. Your thoughts will be constantly stimulated as you move through this book.
Our lives have changed substantially since William Whyte wrote The Organization Man in 1956. The work environment experienced by today's generation-and tomorrow's-is radically different. Instead of being captives of the organizational mode, income-earners are now free agents, including some 30 million freelancers, temps, and microbusiness owners. The lifestyles and philosophies of this growing group will impact the labor pool, retirement, education, real estate, and politics. Daniel Pink's name will go down in literary history for Free Agent Nation because he has so effectively covered the underlying philosophy of a generation.
Free Agent Nation, an engaging, smooth read, is organized into five parts. The first part introduces us to what Free Agent Nation is all about. Chapter 2 gets right into "Numbers and Nuances" to give the reader a deep understanding. Chapter 3 explains how free agency happened. "Four ingredients were essential: 1) the social contract of work-in which employees traded loyalty for security-crumbled; 2) individuals needed a large company less, because the means of production-that is, the tools necessary to create wealth-went from expensive, huge, and difficult for one person to operate to cheap, houseable, and easy for one person to operate; 3) widespread, long-term prosperity allowed people to think of work as a way not only to make money, but also to make meaning; 4) the half-life of organizations began shrinking, assuring that most individuals will outlive any organization for which they work."
Part Two explores The Free Agent Way, the new relationship between worker and employer. Part Three gets into How (and Why) Free Agency Works. Pink explains how people get connected-with work opportunities and with each other. While many free agents work alone, they are not alone. There is a growing community of mutually-supportive independent members in an evolving new design of society. But, all is not rosy in Free Agent Nation; this is not Camelot. Part Four examines the problems that arise from laws, taxes, and insurance. An interesting chapter (13) on Temp Slaves, Permatemps, and the Rise of Self-Organized Labor reveals the seedier side of this picture. Pay careful attention, and you can almost feel the changes that are coming.
Part Five engages The Free Agent Future. Chapter 14 addresses E-tirement, confirming that older members of our society will be playing much different roles than in previous generations. The chapter on Education gives some initial insight into some different approaches to lifelong learning. Educators take note: your lives will be changing . . . are you ready? Concluding chapters explore free agent finance, politics, and how free agency will influence commerce, careers, and community in the years ahead.
With all that said, let's take a look at who the author is and how this book was put together. Daniel Pink is a former White House speech writer and Contributing Editor to Fast Company magazine. To research this topic, he invested more than a year on the road conducting face-to-face interviews with several hundred citizens of the Free Agent Nation. He met with real people, who are quoted and cited by name in most cases. The text comes alive with the insightful stories of people who are living-and often loving-their free agent status. These case studies are beautifully interwoven, producing a delightful fabric for the reader to caress. Warning: you'll find your mind leaving the page and floating into day dreams and contemplations numerous times.
To bring readers back to the reality of the core of his treatise, Pink concludes each chapter with what he calls "The Box." Included in this one-page-per-chapter feature are the key information and arguments of the chapter. The four components of this summary box are "The Crux," a summary of 150 words or less; "The Factoid," a particularly revealing statistic from the chapter; "The Quote," which pulls one representative quotation from the chapter; and "The Word," a novel term or phrase from the new vocabulary of free agency. As the author explains, "Read only "The Box" and you'll miss the chapter's narrative and nuance-but not, I hope, it's point."
An appendix on the free agent census and a good index complete this book. If you're ready to learn about the evolution and revolution in the world of work, this book will be a treasure for you.

This Book changed my life!!
By Bob Whitehead
And I never thought I would say that about any book other than the Bible. But Pink's book has become my professional Bible. I wasn't one of those wise ones who sat down, thought it all out, weighed all the plusses and minuses, and made a decision. Nope, not me. That makes way too much sense! After being left stranded high and dry after the Technology industry downturn last year, and scrambling to make it; little by little, one job here, one job there, I finally realized I was making it, and pretty well, but without the traditional J-O-B. Then I ran across Dan's book, and found myself!! It is overflowing with advice, insights, perspective, tips, you-name-it for those who love freedom and controlling their own life more than a corner office with a rubber tree plant!
If you want to understand the current revolution in the workplace, read this book.
If you think you might be interested in being a Free Agent, study this book!
If you're trying to make it as a Free Agent, DEVOUR this book.
Thanks for all your hard work, Dan! I can never thank you enough!!!

Shocked to be shocked
By Anne
I read a lot. Hours each day. Every genre. I'm fascinated by a book that surprises me because I typically know what's going to happen half way through. That doesn't make me like a book any less, it just makes me realize, again, that at this point in my life, having majored in English 50 years ago, and having read voraciously since, that I've become delightfully intuitive over time. James Paterson's Honeymoon was an incredible exception. Every chapter surprised me, even shocked me. I just wasn't expecting the intertwined twists and turns of this tale. Bravo, Mr. Patterson and co-writer. BRAVO!

The unexpected twists and turns are worth the read not to mention the subtle character dynamics and dialogue. A quick and easy read!

From Publishers Weekly
Mega-bestseller Patterson teams up with journalist/novelist Paetro for a rousing fourth installment of the Women's Murder Club series. This time, bright, tough SFPD Lt. Lindsay Boxer is battling police brutality charges while chasing down a clan of murderers. When a botched police arrest of two gun-toting minors expands from a shaky preliminary hearing to what promises to be a nerve-rattling jury trial of Lindsay, she flees the pre-trial media frenzy for the serene haven of sister Cat's house in Half Moon Bay. But instead of finding relaxation and romance with her Homeland Security beau, Lindsay becomes embroiled in the ruthless crimes of a troika of killers who've been slashing and flogging victims all over town. With surprisingly little aid from the Murder Club, Lindsay performs her detective handiwork (and steps on the toes of Half Moon's police chief). As more bodies surface, sketchy suspects like a smitten grease monkey and a slimy porn star emerge, then the murderous threesome set their sights on Lindsay. Back in San Francisco, Lindsay is acquitted; she then rushes back to Half Moon Bay to apprehend the elusive villains and put to rest her unresolved first homicide case as well. Heroic super-sleuthing, a steadily gripping plot line and 146 snappy chapters add up to suspense fiction euphoria for Patterson's legion of fans. (One-day laydown May 2)

From Booklist
After the explosive events of the third entry in the Women's Murder Club series, 3rd Degree (2004), which claimed the life of one of the members, it's understandable that the follow-up might be a bit of a letdown. But only a little. Patterson's characteristic brutal murders and elusive killers are present, keeping the stakes high. Lindsay Boxer, the police lieutenant who brought the club together, is taking some serious heat in this installment. After a car chase goes wrong, Lindsay is forced to shoot two killers after they wound her and her partner. The firefight leaves a 15-year-old girl dead and her 13-year-old brother paralyzed, making way for a police brutality lawsuit. Lindsay hides out in her sister's suburban house, where she hopes to escape the media circus surrounding her trial. But someone has been killing married couples in the upscale community, and the method greatly resembles a case from early in Lindsay's career, one that she was never able to close the book on. Even though the Women's Murder Club itself is consigned to the background, Lindsay's trial and the murders keep the pages turning. Kristine Huntley

Major League Whodunit!
By Michael D. Trimble
Wow, what a story! There is a reason why James Patterson sells millions of books and great mysteries like 4th of July are the reason why. In the fourth installment of the popular Women's Murder Club series, Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer (the head of San Francisco Police Department's Homicide Division) is fighting to save her career after she is accused in a wrongful death suit, and at the same time struggling to help solve a series of grisly murders that have shaken the small town of Half Moon Bay, where she has retreated to chill out while on administrative leave from the SFPD.

As the story unfolds Lieutenant Boxer is hot on the trail of a couple of suspects that she and her partner believe are responsible for a recent string of seedy motel murders. Turns out the suspects are two very youthful teenage siblings, and in the process of apprehending these two, Boxer is forced to use deadly force to defend herself and her partner. When all is said and done, Boxer's partner is critically wounded and unconscious, Boxer herself has been hit twice, a 15 year old girl is dead, and her 13 year old brother is paralyzed for life from the neck down. Was it a legitimate use of deadly force? Not in the minds of the parents it wasn't. And the media has already found her guilty without the benefit of trail!

In Half Moon Bay someone is killing local residents in a gruesome fashion reminiscent of an unsolved homicide from Lieutenant Boxer's earliest days on the force. She is supposed to be laying low in the sleepy little seaside resort, gearing up the trail of her life, but when the killing starts, she finds herself hard pressed to remain disinterested and unengaged. Before long she is swept up in the investigation and a target for murder herself!

A great weekend read. The chapters just fly by! Also recommended are the other three stories in the Women's Murder Club series: 1st to Die, 2nd Chance, and 3rd Degree. Be the first on your block to collect all four books!

Manufactured, assembly line thriller.
By Average Reader
James Patterson and his latest co-writer have written a novel that appears to have been compiled from a crime novel cliche bin. Dozens of murders, overly-dramatic descriptions, and a climax that it is anything but. His leading character hardly spends more than a few moments investigating yet miraculously solves a baffling crime. Patterson has really stretched himself thin on this one. It is a true page-turner in that you keep turning pages to see if anything interesting will ever happen.

Keeps you guessing!
By Glen Cassini
I thought this was a good book that kept me guessing to the end. The chapters are only a few pages each, so the action shifts all over the place. The one unrealistic aspect of this book that I did not care for was the trial. She had this trial hanging over her head the whole book and yet she never really seemed to worry about it, at least not in the way that most normal people would.

A great reference!
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
FAMOUS BLACK QUOTATIONS is a great resource to just about anyone, whether they are a student doing research, a presenter seeking to add some historical content or anyone looking for additional knowledge! It includes quotations from well-known persons such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Sojourner Truth, but it also provides quotes from lesser-known persons as well. These topics include love, struggle, self-reliance and making discoveries, just to name a few! One of my personal quotations hails from August Wilson. It reads, "All you need in the world is love and laughter. That's all anybody needs. To have love in one hand and laughter in the other." When one reflects on this quote, its truth seems to jump off the pages!

A comprehensive collection of famous quotations
By Angela (awc@home.com)
I am a writer, and this book has saved me on many an occasion. The quotations included cover a broad spectrum of categories- struggle, identity, self-reliance, challenge, love, etc.- and eras. Handy size makes it ideal for carrying. The only thing I don't like is that the quotations are accompanied by a name only. While it is easy to identify names like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, others are more obscure and because I am not entirely familiar with African-American history, it leads me to wonder who some of these people are. Otherwise, a great reference tool and kudos to Ms. Bell for putting together such a handy book!

Great Reference Book
By NappyGirl
I spotted this one at my local book store and couldn't put it down. This compact volume is an invaluable resource for students, writers, or everyday folk. It includes both extremely well-known and obscure quotes and conrtibutors.
I was surprised to read that many familiar quotes that I'd been aware of for years are actually attributed to African Americans. This book would make a great gift for the recent grad or any of the wordsmiths in your life. The only drawback is the book's brevity I only wish it were more comprehensive!!
