Excellent Reference
By A Customer
I've had this book for a number of years and have found in to be an invaluable resource when I need a refresher on the proper technique for various target-toning moves. The pictures are large and very helpful, even if they are black & white, and the text does an excellent job explaining how the various muscle groups should feel during the movement of the exercise. There are great little "tips and reminders" throughout the book that address both diet and exercise.
I'd recommend this book for anyone looking for a good all-around resource, especially for those just starting a fitness program or those who have "fallen off the wagon" and need to get started again.

Not even close to being as good as the video
By Etznab
I think the exercises in both this book and the separate video series are very effective. However, I found many of the written instructions in this book to be very unclear.
The book does have over 100 large pictures. However, the pictures do very little to illustrate the range of motion needed to complete the exercise in proper form. If you have never seen these exercises performed on the video, it's difficult to figure out what exactly you are supposed to do.

Great pictures, easy reading fitness tips...

Leisa Hart is phenomenal on video, and she looks great in print. This book is a great reference book for the beginner, and can remind advanced exercisers not to get carried away in un-necessary moves.
As always, Leisa Hart's body makes you want to work out more, and only hope that your wife could look that good!!! Great book for all...

From Publishers Weekly
The travails of the Foley family in the times before and during the Irish potato famine are the subject of Williams's overwrought, unashamedly romantic epic (after Four Letters of Love). Francis Foley inherited his rebel blood from a father who was hung for treason by the English, but his marauding spirit is tamed somewhat when he marries Emer O'Suilleabhain, the daughter of a village schoolteacher. A gardener on the great estate of a mostly absentee grandee, Francis eventually takes to breaking into the big house and looking at the sky through his lordship's telescope, to Emer's dismay; their quarrels escalate into violence and she leaves him. Francis, desperate to find her, packs up his four sons, steals the telescope, sets fire to the estate and runs off. So begins a series of disasters that sees the Foley boys Tomas, Teige and the twins, Finbar and Finan separated and reunited several times as their destinies carry them to Hungary, America and Africa. Tomas, the oldest, falls in love with a beautiful prostitute named Blath, for whom he kills a man. Teige, the youngest, becomes a locally famous horse tamer and runs off with Elizabeth, the daughter of the squire he works for, and Finbar winds up the leader of a gypsy band. Francis himself is nearly drowned, and is rescued by monks; he searches for his sons and is finally reunited with Emer, now a blind woman. Williams veers from lyricism to blarney in swooping, misty paragraphs sure to please his readership. Major ad/promo; 5-city author tour.

From Library Journal
As a novelist, Williams started out big with Four Letters of Love, soon to appear on the silver screen in an adaptation directed by Stanley Tucci. His next, As It Is in Heaven, was shortlisted for the Irish Times Literary Award. Here, four brothers help their father escape 19th-century Ireland with a stolen telescope in tow, then go their separate ways for innumerable adventures.
Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
The author of the acclaimed debut novel Four Letters of Love (1997), Williams once again features a father undone by grandiose dreams. Sick to death of the menial chores required and the disrespect he suffers as a gardener on a vast estate in Ireland, working for an absentee landlord, Francis Foley steals a splendid telescope from the owner's large library. His wife, tired of constantly being on the move and of her husband's refusal to put his family before his pride, has taken off. In order to escape the law, Francis and his four sons sneak away in the middle of the night. In attempting to cross a turbulent river, the sons become separated from their father and eventually from each other. Now the father wants nothing more than what he once had: the closeness and comfort of his family. Williams expertly covers a lot of territory--the stark tragedy of the potato famine, the ability to speak to horses, the pull of the stars--giving his resonant, fable-like story the grand sweep of an epic. A Rich Tale of Complex Characters
By Robert Ryan Langer - FictionAddiction.net
The Fall of Light is an honest story of the Foley family in 18th century Ireland. In relating the dire situations the family members face, Williams hides nothing.
Compared to the comfort of today's technologically advanced society, life in Ireland was far more potent and painful. They were dirty and poor, yet each day they lived life with a dogged determination to make a better life. From the setting to the characters, this story had the ring of truth.
Unlike the typical, tightly plotted novel, The Fall of Light, remained believably unpredictable. Every family member acted and grew according to their complex natures.
None of the characters could be pigeonholed with a single phrase.
To describe Teige, the youngest brother, merely as a horse tamer neglects the passion that smoldered for years before he dared reach above his station in life. The act of pursuing the love of his life had more profound ramifications than the taming of any horse. In a more typically plotted novel, it would have been the taming of the horses that determined the course of Teige's life.
Through the course of the story, the focus continually shifts from a tight, close-up view to broad panoramas. In one paragraph, you see every drop of blood that drips into the muddy street outside a Limerick whorehouse. In another, years pass without incident on a gypsy caravan.
Occasionally, brothers have true visions of lost siblings, seeing them as through a telescope, compressing years into moments. These transitions, instead of having a jarring effect, give the narrative a dreamlike quality that infuses everything Irish.
This is a well-crafted tale. The narrative wove a coherent pattern out of the chaos of life. Spanning decades of time, sometimes in great hurdles of years, the members of the Foley family persevere against harsh reality to find a peace of sorts. Life in those simpler times was in no way less complex than today.
There are, for the most part, only minor flaws with the book. One small error was of the astronomical variety. This story takes place firmly in the 18th century.
Much of the narrative occurs after the 1849 California gold rush and before the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869. At one point, Francis Foley, the patriarch of the family, studies a star chart that lists Pluto as one of the planets. Unfortunately, Pluto was not discovered until 1930, long after the end of the tale. This was the only minor distraction in an otherwise well told tale.
This book is a treat for those who enjoy reading about realistic characters striving to survive the turmoil of their lives.

Celtic Eden
By Lee Armstrong
Niall Williams' novel is a joy. He has taken us back to a world, amazingly enough, in the not-so-distant past in Ireland. The episodic journey of the Foley clan does not come with a blazing climax, but is a replete telling of the tale of Francis Foley, his wife and four sons. Consistent with the Irish history of that period, all four sons leave Ireland, two to North America, one to Africa and one all about Europe, especially France. Francis' journey of discontent and pride washes him up on an island that becomes like a Celtic Eden of the heart, an asylum for lost hopes and dreams, a resting place for a Paradise lost. The stories of each of the sons is touching. Teige, the youngest, is the most closely followed; but each receives a special telling. Emer the wife and mother also weathers years of isolation before reunion with Francis and two of her sons. "The Fall of Light" is rich with Irish emotion, gypsy temperment, love, passion, and even the lure of the wild west. This is a tale that gathers you in its grasp, holds you in its grip until depositing you on the last page. Enjoy & savor!

Wonderful story
By Mary Reinert
Although I admit it took me just a bit of time to get used to the author's style of sometimes convoluted sentence structure, I could hardly put this story down.

After a fight with this wife, Francis Foley steals a telescope and leaves his Irish home with his four sons. The four sons are then scattered after they think their father has drowned while attempting to cross the Shannon River. The story of each son is remarkable in that each finds himself following a separate road yet never forgetting the others in the family. The father's search for the boys seems to provide a sense of magnetism which draws them all to seek each other.

Each son has a different story and all are followed to one extent or another throughout the book. Although the story of Teige, the youngest son, takes most of the story, the life of Finbar who follows the gypsies is especially well told. The author takes the reader from Ireland across Europe and across the Atlantic to the wide west of America. The potato famine, immigration to America, and the exploration of the West all provide backgrounds for the telling of the Foley boys' stories.

As I read this book, I couldn't help but think of my own ancestors as they traveled from Europe, some to the US and some to New Zealand. Although not Irish, I'm sure each family member left home with his or her own set of troubles and hopes. sometimes conscious decisions were made and other times they were just swept along by circumstances. The road has not been straight as so well described by the Foley family. Highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever wondered about how their own family has fit into the history of the time.

Detective Aidan Reagen is first on scene of what seems to be a suicide. Dr. Tess Ciccotelli receives a phone call in the middle of the night telling her that her patient is about to jump off her balcony. She arrives too late, not knowing that her patient was already dead when she got the call.

Aidan feels contempt, if not hatred for Tess's roll in the trial of a child/police killer. As the person that discovered the body of the 3rd child found, Aidan wanted to see justice for the families of the victims. Instead, Tess declared the defendant incompetent, which sealed her fate as far as the Police Department was concerned. That she seems so cool and unaffected while standing over her dead patient doesn't surprise Aidan in the least.

When another, then yet another patient dies, all the evidence points to Tess as the one who is pushing them to commit suicide. Tess adamantly declares her innocence and is willing to work along side a detective that obviously loathes her.

As Aidan and Tess work together to uncover who hates Tess enough to plan something so heinous, they both realize how wrong they are about each other. Aidan realizes that the calm Tess projects is a facade. He also learns that she is extremely loyal to her patients, even thought she knowingly treats criminals. Tess sees that there is more to Aidan than meets the eye. It is Aidan's belief in her that helps her deal with everything she knows is to come.

The secondary characters make this book even better. A lot of the characters are ones we've met in previous books. Although the book is over 500 pages, it never drags. This is a definite Rose winner. Don't miss it!

Chilling!
By Kristi Ahlers
Doctor Tess Ciccotelli is a psychiatrist and when her troubled patients begin to die in suspect ways the police think she may be the killer. When detective Aidan Reagan and his partner Todd Murphy catch her case Aidan is quick to judge the one woman he feels allowed a monster to escape his punishment. Tess knows she's going to have to cooperate with the police she only wishes she didn't see Aidan as a man, a man who makes her want a the security of his arms.

Aidan Reagan is prepared to hate Tess for her role in allowing a murdering monster to escape standing trial. He is convinced she is the enemy. But, when the murders of her patients begin to climb and she is ruined and her friends an family are in danger he realizes that he is wrong about Tess. She cares and despite his best effort he finds out so does he. He now needs to find a killer who wants Tess dead before he looses the one person he'll ever love.

Ms. Rose has done it again. She is one talented writer who can draw out a suspense read to the final spine chilling end. It was fun to re-visit with Abe, Kristen, and the rest of the Reagan family. Aidan and Tess are compelling characters and the nightmare Ms. Rose creates for them is top drawer. This is one author I highly recommend.

Karen Rose Never Fails To Please
By Monica Poling
As always, Rose delivers a masterful, story of suspense. In this story, we see a return of Aidan Reagan, who was first introduced to us as younger brother of Abe Reagan, hero of I'M WATCHING YOU.

Aidan, a recently promoted detective, is called on to investigate the apparent open-and-shut suicide of Cynthia Adams. Adams, it turns out, was a patient of psychiatrist Dr. Tess Ciccotelli, not a favorite of the Chicago PD. Tess, in her role as court psychiatrist, argued for the mental instability of a psychotic murderer, sending him to a state hospital instead of prison, and she's been persona non grata with the police ever since.

Reagan soon learns there was nothing simple about Adams suicide, and that instead it came as a result of an elaborately planned scheme. Seems the murderer has access to Tess' private files and knows exactly how to push the victim's buttons, causing them to end their own lives. It doesn't take long for nearly every person Tess knows to become a victim. Even casual acquaintances aren't safe, as the murderer turns from elaborately planned mental torture, to a more immediate form of death, old fashioned homicide.

As Tess becomes accused of everything from murder to violating doctor patient confidentiality, Aiden becomes more and more convinced that she's guilty of nothing. Needless to say he's also having a hard time battling his attraction to Tess.

This story is also filled with numerous secondary characters, many of which who don't make it to the end of the story, but many who also do survive. From Reagan's family to Tess' family, to her immediate Friends-like set of pals there are many characters wandering around this story.

Rose does a good job of keeping her characters well-defined and not letting them control the story. Her particular strength in YOU CAN'T HIDE, though, is painting a great picture of Tess' increasing isolation, as many of the people she knows are murdered. Even with the built in support of her surviving peers, Tess becomes more and more rattled to be integral in the loss of so many.

As always, this is an enjoyable work by Karen Rose, one of the rising stars in the world of romantic suspense. Even at nearly 500 pages, the story is a fast read and doesn't ever veer off course.

The Road Home--An Excellent Novel
By K. Morgan
Can Lily Holt's life be more of a mess? The divorced mother of out-of-control teenager Riley has moved back to her childhood home of Glens Crossing, Indiana. She has moved herself and her son back to her childhood home to get him away from his grandparents in Chicago. Lily is afraid their interferring in Riley's life will do him more harm than good. With his dad in rehab for alcohol Lily is on her own raising her son. But the quiet, peaceful life she is looking for in Glens Crossing eludes her when her son gets in trouble and she is reunited with someone from her past. Lily is faced with her past and trying to keep her son's future positive and trouble-free.
The Road Home was the second Susan Crandall book I read. It was very enjoyable and entertaining. There is something for everyone in this book: money, lies, secrets, love. The storyline of the book was excellent and the characters very life-like. The setting of this book was good too. Ms. Crandall does an excellent job of portraying Indiana the way it is. Being from Indiana myself I appreciate this. She really paid attention to detail. Especially when she has to run an errand she doesn't want the entire town to know about. Living in a small town has it's disadvantages as well as perks.
The Road Home is a book to be read and enjoyed. Ms. Crandall writes about small town life with characters who seem to be real. An excellent novel to recommend!

The Road Home is a moving books. A must read
By Judy
Lily Holt is anxious to make a new start for herself and her wayward teenage son Riley. She decides to head home after her divorce, hoping the small town she grew up in will help. Lily and Riley are barely back in town when Riley gets in trouble. Riley has to work off his debt at the marina. Lily is shocked to see her first love Clay Winters as the owner.

Clay Winters had returned to the one place that felt like home to him. He never thought Lily would come back after she married his best friend. Now Clay has to supervise her strong-willed son. Lily and Clay keep getting thrown together. They realize their past never really went away.

The Road Home by Susan Crandall has such heart wrenching emotions and joy of life. Her characters just touch a chord and will not let go. You feel like you are a part of their lives.

I am glad I found her books, she is an auto-buy for me.

The Confusing road home
By A Customer
This was the first book I've ever read by Susan Crandall and I'm not so sure if I'll read more by her. The book was kind of confusing and a little frustrating at first. I didn't feel like the story flowed all that well. I like the idea of reading in present times then going back to the past in the book but sometimes I felt like she was covering too many things in one paragraph and it got too confusing. I found myself just skimming through the book waiting for the good parts, which there were some but I needed to know more about the main characters and why they were attracted to eachother. I didn't find the main character too attractive myself and I want to know why the guys in the book were so attracted to her. She was this strong person with her dad but when it came to her son she was this whimp. I think it was a good story idea but I like detail and I like dialogue, which there wasn't enough of in this book. If there is a good book by this author please, someone say so. I would like to give her another chance.

Blue McCarron is a gay social psychologist who lives in an abandoned motel in the desert outside San Diego. She has teamed up with Roxie Bouchie, an African American (and country line-dancing) prison staff psychiatrist--and their newest case is a baffling one.

From Publishers Weekly
A funny, idiosyncratic cast of characters and a cunningly developed series of murders are the highlights in an otherwise middling sequel to 1998's Blue, which introduced social psychologist and amateur shamus Blue McCarron. Here Blue and her foxy lover, prison psychiatrist Roxie Bouchie, join detective Wes Rathbone and his wife, Annie, and Blue's Doberman, Bront?, in nosing through San Diego and the surrounding desert in search of the fanatic who is murdering prominent local female politicians. The murderer, who leaves a Blue Willow china plate as a calling card after each killing, is somehow causing women who have had plastic surgery at a posh clinic where the blue plates are part of the d?cor to suffer fatal strokes. Who hates successful women enough to commit wanton murder? Is it one of the members of the clinic's staff? Is it a political enemy? Or could it be a random religious fanatic who leaves messages from "The Sword in Heaven" (Isaiah 34) for Blue and the cops after the murders? Unfortunately, a buildup that promises a racy, risqu?, zany story never really pays off. Some readers will applaud the feminist political sentiments, but others will find the novel ultimately as flat and dry as the desert sand. (Mar. 7) Forecast: Padgett, author of the Bo Bradley series (Strawgirl), has a strong following among feminist mystery fans, but this so-so effort is unlikely to help her win the broader audience her publisher is seeking with its concerted marketing and promotion campaign.

From Library Journal
When two prominent female politicians die in San Diego of cerebral hemorrhages within days of each other, social psychologist Blue McCarron knows that their deaths are a statistical impossibilityDthey simply cannot be from natural causes. Within hours, a female evangelist almost dies, and threats from a religious fanatic, illustrated with blue willow plates, tie the three victims together. Blue and her lover, Roxanne, a criminal psychiatrist, are hired by the police as consultants and trace the three women to a posh plastic surgery clinic. As Blue and Rox investigate the clinic, the killer turns his attention on Blue, a strong, nontraditional woman who offends his ultraconservative religious beliefs. When Blue finds a blue willow plate on the doorstep of her isolated desert home, she knows the hunt has become a deadly game and that the unknown killer has every advantage. This second mystery featuring Blue McCarron (following Blue, LJ 10/1/98) is full of unpredictable turns and is totally enthralling. Blue and Rox are funny and sweet, brave yet scared, as they navigate their new relationship amid the terrifying hunt for a serial killer. Highly recommended for public libraries.DKaren Anderson, Quarles & Brady/Streich Lang, Phoenix

From Booklist
Padgett's done it again. Not only has she come up with a great title but with a sequel to Blue (1998), first in her series on gay social psychologist Blue McCarron, that's every bit as riveting. As established in the first go-round, Blue lives in a half-built, abandoned motel in the middle of the high desert outside of San Diego with her Doberman, Bronte. She is now partnered in every way with psychiatrist Roxie Bouchie, and the two are hired by the SDPD, who are baffled by death notes from "The Sword of Heaven" threatening prominent women. Sure enough, Blue computes the statistical impossibility of exactly what has happened--two healthy female politicians die of cerebral hemorrhages in San Diego within days of each other--and the chase is on for a religious zealot of a serial killer. Once again, Padgett develops in Roxie, and sidekick BB, three-dimensional African American characters and beautifully evokes the landscape and mindscape of the desert in this latest of what will hopefully be a long detective series. A Great Read!
By Elizabeth Vrabel
I downloaded "Child of Silence" when it was offered free and loved it enough to buy ALL the other books by Abigail Padgett; she crafts an intelligent, well-structured story that draws you in and doesn't let you go until the final page.
The style is different from her Bo Bradly mysteries, but it fully delivers the wonderful characters and deft plot twists that define her work; this book will keep you up well past your bedtime unable to put it down!

great sequel
By A Customer
An intriguing follow-up to "Blue," this mystery focuses on a serial killer who seems to be targeting powerful women in the community who have risen "above their place". Clues draw Blue to a cosmetic surgeon and his staff, all of whom become suspects. The author juggles such disparate topics as child abuse, antique plates, social psychology, line dancing, and the Atkins diet to produce a fascinating read.
Also, it's nice not to have the tiresome "amateur woman detective falls in love with handsome cop storyline" for once.
Thank you, AP.

Smart, Well Paced, Enjoyable, and Intelligent
By Allen Smalling
Abigail Padgett's "The Last Blue Plate Special" features Blue McCarron and her friend/lover Roxanne Bouchie, respectively a social psychologist and a psychiatrist. High-placed woman politicians are dying in ways they shouldn't, especially when they're dying in the same ways, especially times two when they have the same occupation. With the help of her extensive training and some esoteric computer analysis, Blue formulates a theory that eventually drags Rox into her investigation.
As you may know if you read the predecessor book, "Blue," these two women make a formidable duo. In this book, scoping out the cause of death doesn't mean they can prevent future deaths or even eliminate the risk to themselves. But with the help of a refreshingly non-stereotypical police detective, progress is made. This novel holds surprises down to the end.
Too much has been made, I think, of "The Last Blue Plate Special" as a lesbian novel. "Rubyfruit Jungle" may be a lesbian novel; this one is not. The women are intimate and we know they make love but graphic descriptions are omitted. Heck, even in the Fifties Mickey Spillane was more graphic about sex.
I liked "The Last Blue Plate Special" better than "Blue." I thought it had better coherence and flowed better. Part of this may simply be that the author did not have to extensively introduce two ambitious and compassionate women with extremely erudite credentials, at least not to the extent as before. I also noticed less irritating "guppiedom"; Blue still has to juggle work, commute to and from her desert home, spend quality time with Rox, and take care of a Doberman, but she doesn't seem to sweat the details quite so much.
This is very much a novel of the turn of OUR century, and to me one significant theme is life without walls. Blue knows she has a great deal of freedom in life--but the Midwesterner in her also knows she pays for what she gets. Her relationship with Rox comes at a price, as does living in the desert. Sleuthing, as opposed to merely being a professorial type or a consultant, comes with huge risks, but she loves them. The novel threatens a huge upheaval in Rox and Blue's lives, but Blue seems ready to deal with that. She has instant communication, but with that comes 24/7 on-call status. Gone are the days when Philip Marlow could hole up in a bar all afternoon and figure things out.
I read a fair number of mysteries and I think "The Last Blue Plate Special" is quite good. If the book would be ruined for you by a couple of pages' worth of "this is contemporary lesbian life" ruminations sprinkled through the book, and maybe five lines of mere allusion to lesbian lovemaking, don't buy it. I had hoped the American public was more mature, but I know there are exceptions.

Some call it" genius". Others have named it "spirit", "daimon", and even "guardian angel". But while philosophers and psychologists from Plato to Jung emphasized the fundamental essence of our individuality, our modern culture refuses to accept that a unique, formed soul is within us from birth, shaping as much as it is shaped.

Now in this extraordinary bestseller, James Hillman presents a brilliant new vision of our selves not defined by family relationships or the mentality of victimization. Drawing on the biographies of such disparate people as Ella Fitzgerald and Mohandas K. Gandhi, James Hillman argues that character is fate and shows how the soul, if given the opportunity, can assert itself even at an early age. The result is a reasoned and powerful road map to understanding our true nature and discovering an eye-opening array of choices -- from the way we raise our children to our career paths to our social and personal commitments to achieving excellence in our time.

Amazon.com Review
James Hillman, a former director of the Jung Institute who has written more than 20 books on behavior and psychology, delves into human development in The Soul's Code. Hillman encourages you to "grow down" into the earth, as an acorn does when it becomes a mighty oak tree. He argues that character and calling are the result of "the particularity you feel to be you" and knocks those who blame childhood difficulties for all their problems as adults. According to Hillman, "The current American identity as a victim is the flip side of the coin whose head brightly displays the opposite identity: the heroic self-made man, carving out destiny alone and with unflagging will." Hillman's theories seem disarmingly simple, but he backs them with a careful, well-practiced intellect.

From Publishers Weekly
Decades ago, pioneering Jungian analyst and author Hillman (Kinds of Power) challenged the assumptions of Western psychology by applying the ancient concept of "soul" to the modern psyche. Rendered in simpler terms by his protege, bestselling author Thomas Moore, Hillman's work on soul has fed the public imagination with the nourishing idea that we are vastly deeper and more permeable to the influences around us than we may think. Here, Hillman discusses character and calling, introducing an "acorn theory" that claims that "each life is formed by its unique image, an image that is the essence of that life and calls it to a destiny." Borrowing the language of Plato's Myth of Ur, Hillman suggests that this imaginary sense of our lives or callings drives each of us like a personal daimon or force. Drawing on extraordinary lives from Judy Garland to Coco Chanel to Hitler, he describes the movements of the daimon, showing how it can use everything in our environment, from lucky accidents to bad movies, to allow the acorn to "grow down" and express itself in the real material of our lives. Without succumbing to oversimplification or wishful thinking, Hillman challenges the reductive "parental fallacy"?the contention that our early experience with our parents determines our selves and our futures. The daimon, he says, pulls us up out of mere conditioning to have a fate. In this brilliant, absorbing work, Hillman dares us to believe that we are each meant to be here; that we are needed by the world around us. Simultaneous Random AudioBook; author tour.

From Library Journal
Hillman has written ten books, but he is best known as the inspiration for Thomas Moore's Care of the Soul. Now, for this book on finding one's personal calling, he's getting a big print run himself.

I found this book fascinating about how we choose our passions in life or how they choose us. It's a complicated read, not one to breeze through, but quite enjoyable and in-depth about our journey. Robert Redford recommended to Charlie Rose years ago and I finally got the chance to read it. Interesting insights about each of our callings in life.

Extraordinary!
By Richard La Rosa
This is a book for anyone who has ever been stuck in the quicksand of the intellect or has made the emotional descent into the pit of angst. In my opinion, it is no mere hyperbole to say that, if you have ever questioned the meaning of your life's purpose or struggled with the concept of destiny, "The Soul's Code," might be the Rosetta Stone with which to illuminate and give meaning to your life. James Hillman is a psychologist and Jungian analyst with a thoroughly modern view of the human psyche that I can only describe as truly empowering for the reader. The subtitle of the book--"In Search of Character and Calling"--not only illustrates the investigative intent, it delivers a discovery that is nothing short of miraculous. In "The Soul's Code," Hillman uses the metaphor of an acorn to serve as the image of the soul and its "calling" in life. Just as the acorn contains all the information that is needed to grow a complete oak tree; so does the soul contain the entire history of a life, from the moment of birth to the end of a life. Using biographical examples of diverse personalities such as Judy Garland, Adolf Hitler, Josephine Baker, Manuel Manolete, Ella Fitzgerald and others, Hillman makes a credible case to support his theories. The idea of the book, in a nutshell, is that the soul of every individual is given a unique "daimon" which has selected a pattern that we live on earth. Another word for daimon--which comes from the Greeks--is "genius" (which is the word that the Romans used). In Hillman's own words, from Chapter One: "This soul-companion, the daimon, guides us here; in the process of arrival, however, we forget all that took place and believe we come empty into this world. The daimon remembers what is in your image and belongs to your pattern, and therefore your daimon is the carrier of your destiny." In a nutshell, then, this book is about calling, about fate, about character, about innate image. Together they make up the 'acorn theory,' which holds that each person bears a uniqueness that asks to be lived and that is already present before it can be lived." I enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone who has wondered and pondered and searched for meaning in their life beyond the the mundane and habitual patterns they may have settled into.

From Publishers Weekly
Haig's wisecracking J.A.G. attorney Sean Drummond returns for his fourth caper in three years (after January 2003's The Kingmaker). Unpopular with his military superiors because of his sharp tongue and his tendency to attract trouble, Major Drummond finds himself loaned out to a private law firm. Culper, Hutch, and Westin represents some of the District of Columbia's most staid, old-line institutions, and Drummond begins ruffling feathers from the moment he arrives, though he does prove surprisingly popular with some clients. Meanwhile, a serial killer is taking out attractive young professional women. The first victim is Lisa Morrow, Drummond's sidekick in Haig's debut thriller, Secret Sanction, and also a military lawyer working for Culper, Hutch, and Westin. In fact, Lisa's on her way to meet Drummond when she's murdered. Chapters from the obsessive killer's dark perspective alternate with Drummond's cheeky first-person narration. Not happy with police progress on the case, Lisa's sister Janet, also a lawyer and a dark-haired beauty, steps forward to help Drummond investigate, even as victims pile up. Both Janet and Drummond prove to be entertaining thorns in the side of crusty police detective Spinelli, the officer in charge of the murder investigation. Haig introduces related subplots featuring corporate greed and criminality, but they don't have the visceral chills or the sexiness of the serial killer story line. In the end, it's all about Drummond; though the novel is overlong, the hero's sharp and devilish style should keep reader interest high until the surprising conclusion.

From Booklist
Maverick JAG officer Sean Drummond finds himself temporarily assigned to a private D.C. firm as part of an officer-borrowing program. He wants nothing to do with the uptight world of corporate law but figures all he has to do is be himself, and he'll be kicked out on his ass within two weeks. He does his best to meet his deadline but winds up assigned to a case involving a Microsoft-like corporation that is trying to land a multibillion-dollar contract with the Department of Defense. Things aren't all suits and cigars, though, when Drummond's predecessor turns up dead. Could her murder be connected to the case that is now in his lap? Smart-talking, no-B.S.-taking Drummond is the perfect hero for the bureaucracy-laden D.C. law scene. In his previous Drummond novels, Haig proved he could compete on the espionage front with the likes of Ken Follett; with this outing, he matches David Baldacci for Beltway intrigue. Murder most foul and a sleuth with style
By Luan Gaines
There's a new star on the scene of the mystery/suspense genre: Brian Haig. I was suspicious at first of this brother of General Alexander Haig, thinking maybe Brian was taking advantage of easy celebrity. No way. Brian Haig proves his talent in Private Sector, written in an energetic, light-hearted style with a good dose of self-deprecating humor.
Sean Drummond is perfectly happy as an Army Attorney, not particularly excited about participating in an attorney exchange program between the Army and the "Private Sector", assigned to a high profile, high-billing law firm. But Sean signed up to follow orders. As the fledgling member of the prestigious D.C. law firm, Sean wastes no time establishing his reputation as a bad boy, unconcerned with keeping this particular assignment. Clearly, Drummond has no love for this arrogant group, specialized litigators who cater to the most elite of Washington businessmen. Sean readily disdains the smooth talkers with their extravagant lifestyles and has no intention of fitting into this particular niche.
Sean is baffled by the aura of menace that surfaces as soon as he begins to ask questions about his predecessor, a young woman recently found murdered. Naturally inquisitive, Drummond is especially interested, since he once dated the young woman. Any attempt on his part to uncover her activities at the firm before her death is met with a wall of silence, which, of course, only piques Sean's curiosity. He appears to spend his days cavorting through his duties in designer suits, driving a new Jaguar provided by the firm, but, in reality, he is intent on uncovering the circumstances that led to this strange death.
Not one to be easily thwarted or intimidated, Drummond enlists the aid of a D.C .cop and an Assistant D.A., who also happens to be the sister of the murdered girl. Continuing his pursuit of inside information, Drummond uncovers a convoluted plot with serious implications of government interference. Then other young women are killed, each in a similar fashion, although with progressively more violence. The police request help from the FBI, assuming they are dealing with a serial killer, but there is far more involved than the apparent serial murders. As Sean and Janet delve deeper than is prudent, their actions put them both in imminent jeopardy.
In Private Sector, Brian Haig serves up a volatile mix of sociopathic assassins, CIA operatives and FBI investigators, with frightening implications. A sly master of bluff and bravado, Haig's Sean Drummond is a sympathetic, even endearing, character, easy to like, imperfections and all. Oblivious to personal danger, Drummond stubbornly pursues the motive and the murderer, refusing to ignore conflicting motives that may impact his investigation. Take the infamous inter-agency conflicts between the CIA and the FBI, add a twisted plot with international criminal overtones and you have a nicely stylized mystery novel by a talented author. Haig knows how to tell a story. This young author is ensured a bright future, with his fresh voice and penchant for innovative plotting. Luan Gaines/ 2003.

Nelson DeMille Jr.?
By B. Goldstein
For 10 years I have anxiously awaited the release of each DeMille novel. With the arrival of each book, I would invariably finish it in 2 days and then lament having to wait another 9 months or so for the next offering. A few years ago, I saw a poster on a DC subway for a book called Secret Sanction by Brian Haig. I wouldn't have thought twice about the poster if it wasn't for a positive testimonial from Nelson DeMille that was printed on the poster. DeMille's rubber stamp was good enough for me. I immediately went out and bought Secret Sanction and was enthralled. I have since read Haig's other novels, including the recently published Private Sector, and each book was better than the prior one. Haig and DeMille are now interchangeable for me and my only negative with each of them is that I read their books too damn fast!! Sean Drummond is a phenomenal main character. His combination of intelligence, strength and wit combined with his self-recognized flaws make him intriguing, likable and, most of all, human. I hope that Haig sticks with Drummond in all future novels. Additionally, I hope that Haig continues to churn these stories out as quickly as possible. Private Sector took less than a day for me to read and it was gripping from the first page to the last. I already need another fix!! Nelson, it's now your turn!!

(4.5) Another Action Thriller by an Underappreciated Author
By Tucker Andersen
I was hooked on Brian Haig's central character JAG lawyer Sean Drummond when I read THE KINGMAKER (five star review of 5/13/03); thus, I resolved to read the earlier books in the series to watch both the character development and changes in the author's technique and style. I subsequently finished SECRET SANCTION (3.5 star review of 7/30/03) and found it enjoyable but not nearly in the same class as THE KINGMAKER. Before I could get to MORTAL ALLIES (#2 in the series), PRIVATE SECTOR was published and I decided to read it before starting the earlier book. I highly recommend both the author and this book, although for reasons summarized at the end of this review (some of which may be entirely personal) I did not find it as completely enjoyable as THE KINGMAKER. But it is a fast moving, excellently plotted, well crafted story and continues the character development of Sean Drummond, who has the potential to be one of the enduring protagonists of this genre.
When Major Drummond is notified by his boss, General Clapper, that he is being assigned to the PRIVATE SECTOR law firm Cupler, Hutch, and Westin under a "loan out" program whose supposed goal is to broaden the experience of the JAG staff while creating goodwill in the public sector, he immediately begins to plot the best method to sabotage the assignment without creating such enmity between himself and Clapper that he effectively terminates his Army career. He realizes that the combination of his natural personality traits should easily be able to be honed to accomplish the task, and immediately begins to alienate those with whom he comes into contact. The one interesting element of the assignment is that Sean is replacing fellow officer Lisa Morrow, whom he has come to know and respect during previous assignments and for whom he harbors a great deal of apparently unrequited affection. When Lisa indicates a desire to meet Sean, he is both curious about what aspects of her experience at Cupler he needs to be briefed and hopeful that she may be more attracted to him than he expected. Unfortunately, their meeting never occurs due to Lisa's apparently random murder in a DC parking lot (this minor spoiler is included because it is revealed on the book jacket) and Sean immediately decides he should supplement the efforts of the DC police and the CID ( the Army's Criminal Investigation Division) in investigating Lisa's death. Since he quickly comes to believe that Lisa's death may be related to Lisa's work at Cupler, he realizes that in order to effectively further his goal of catching Lisa's killer he has remain in the good graces of both the partners of Cupler and General Clapper, not at all an easy task for Sean.
As the cliché goes, the plot quickly thickens as further increasingly brutal and apparently random murders occur. Meanwhile Sean is involved in helping the firm's largest client, Morris Networks, a telecommunications firm spawned during the financial market and technological excesses of the nineties successfully win a major government contract. He soon suspects that Lisa's death and the other murders might somehow be related to Cupler `s representation of Moriss and it's "new economy" CEO Jason Morris. As the story unfolds, there are as usual in Haig's novels many excellent lines from Sean, a well thought out although convoluted plot, and a knowledgeable and quite informative discussion of the latest uses of sophisticated financial instruments and their accounting implications (a la Enron, which is mistakenly referred to as Exxon).
This is an enjoyable and well told story; although I had the advantage of understanding the business aspects of the plot the details are not essential to the story. (I also had the disadvantage of knowing enough to be aggravated at his admittedly minor mistakes.) The author did excellent research and his information is essentially correct with regard to both the details and the overview. However, I was disappointed by the anti-corporate tone of the book, there are basically no honorable people either at Morris or Cupler. In addition, Sean's idiosyncratic characteristics actually were a little overdone at times during the early part of the story and stretched cleverness to the edge of inaneness, which bordered on losing credibility. My only major criticism is the technique of writing this story with Sean as the first party narrator but interspersing segments where the killer became the narrator. (There was no confusion when this occurred, it was identified with a change in typeface. I just found it a little disconcerting although I understand the author's reasons for utilizing the technique.) So, I highly recommend this book as a good legal/action mystery by a talented author. You will benefit from reading the earlier books in the series prior to this, but that is not at all necessary. But if you only have time for one Brian Haig book, I recommend THE KINGMAKER instead as a superior read. (It is now in paperback.)
