From Publishers Weekly
Credited as a major source for last year's Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides, Hour of Redemption: The Heroic WWII Saga of America's Most Daring POW Rescue covers the elite U.S. Sixth Army Ranger force's liberation of 516 Allied prisoners from the Cabanatuan camp in the Philippines, most of whom were American survivors of the Bataan Death March. Former U.S. Army Captain Forrest Bryant Johnson first published this account in 1978, having interviewed more than 500 participants over a six-year period. Included are the important contributions of the Filipino guerrillas, who kept nearby Japanese forces at bay and decimated an entire enemy battalion without a single fatality. American causalities were two killed and only a few wounded; all POWs in the camp were rescued and taken back more than 25 miles to American lines. Japanese casualties totaled over 1,100. From Library Journal
The brutality suffered by many prisoners of war in a POW camp is impossible to fully describe. Those who survived the Bataan Death March in the Philippine Islands during World War II, and who managed miraculously to live through the horrendous treatment by their Japanese Army captors at Cabanatuan, are the real heroes of this history. It details, in the former POWs' own words, their story of capture and ultimate liberation. The Cabanatuan POW camp was as infamous for cruelty to its prisoners as the later "Hanoi Hilton" was during the Vietnam War. This history is written in narrative style from interviews with former POWs, the famous Alamo Scouts, and Army Rangers led by Lt. Col. A. Henry Mucci. Johnson, a former U.S. Army captain, carefully documents the instrumental role of Philippine indigenous guerrilla forces in the daring raid. The pace of history accelerates toward a dramatic ending. Highly recommended for World War II collections and public libraries. Gerald Costa, Brooklyn P.L., NY

Compelling Saga of Survival
By Eric Johnson
I couldn't have finished reading Hour of Redemption at a better time than on Memorial Day and just following the dedication of the WWII Memorial. This book is an amazing story of courage and survival.
When given this book, I was led to believe it focused on the WWII Bataan Death March. To my surprise, the author's scope was much wider and the events during the march were an important yet minor portion of this book. Author, Forrest Johnson, begins in April 1942 with the US Pacific Forces fully engaged and making great efforts to push back the Japanese advances. He uses the early part of the book to discuss the battle and eventual surrender at Bataan. His description of the infamous forced-march from Bataan is savage. I was struck by the reference to the approximated 72,000 Filipinos and Americans who began the match, only 52,000 arrived at the concentration camp.
Those who survived the brutal march were confined in a concentration camp and faced staggering death rates during the initial weeks. Slowly and through the help of local medical units, they were able to survive the disease and unsanitary conditions. Eventually, the death rate subsided and Johnson describes how the POWs began to organize within the camp structure. He describes how they risked sure death by smuggling contraband items and by building radios.
One of the more interesting portions of the book detailed the establishment of the first US Special Forces unit, The Rangers. They are the genesis of today's US Army Rangers; and along with the Alamo Scouts play a pivotal role in the march to free the POWs. (To read more about the Alamo Scouts, pick up Silent Warriors of World War II: The Alamo Scouts Behind the Japanese Lines by Lance Q. Zedric) Johnson uses the last half of the book to describe the planning and daring liberation of the POWs still held captive nearly three years following the Bataan Death March. The vivid details provide a reader with the tactical picture of the men who dared to rescue their comrades. His description of the rescue is a truly remarkable accounting of their triumphant efforts.
My only real criticism of this book is the lack of references. It is easy to see that Johnson devoted a great deal of time in researching the events and he honorably tells the story. He mentions in the author's notes section that there was little written about these events and that more than 500 people were interviewed to be able to write this story. The decision not to cite his references is unfortunate. He does include a general bibliography and a short glossary to enhance this book. Also included are various rosters noting the officers and men who served in the effort.
It is impossible to understand or even imagine the inhumanity that occurred during this part of the war. Only the people who experienced it truly know the hellish details. Forrest Johnson has done a masterful job of telling this saga.
I recommend this book.

The best WW II book I have read
By Oscar Davis
HOUR OF REDEMPTION is quite simply the best WW II book I have read. I finished 10 WW II books during 2003 and finished the year part way through three others. HOUR OF REDEMPTION was unquestionably the absolute best. It will make you proud, make you cheer, enrage you, and, most importantly, captivate you. I was enthralled throughout.
The book tells the story of the rescue of POWs in Cabanatuan in the Philippines. U.S. forces had landed in the Philippines and were in the process of taking the islands back from the Japanese. Many of the POWs at Cabanatuan were survivors of the Death March and, based on the prior conduct of the Japanese, would be executed before U.S. regular forces could reach the camp. To avoid the murders of these survivors, a plan was developed to go approximately 25 miles behind enemy lines and rescue these men. The raid was led by U.S. Rangers who were formerly the 98th Field Artillery (Pack), as well as by Alamo Scouts and Filipino guerillas. In one of the most perfectly executed military operations ever, these incredibly courageous men rescued more than 500 POWs without even so much as one POW being killed by the Japanese during the raid (one POW died of a heart attack and I believe one died of an illness). The rescue team killed approximately 1,200 Japanese soldiers while sustaining only 2 or 3 losses themselves.
I would suggest this book not only to WW II buffs but to anyone. It is an amazing story of courage and fortitude that will leave you thirsting for more. You will not be disappointed with this book ... save for the sleep you lose when you cannot put it down.

The joy of this contemporary novel of faith lies in Bedford's calm, competent voice as she spins a turbulent tale of love, sexual misconduct and divided loyalties. High school counselor Lydia Porter has discovered her soulmate in Charlie Stains, a fellow teacher at Shadrach High School in Missouri. Just before she announces their engagement, one of Porter's favorite students, Shelby Tatum, confides in her that she is being sexually molested-by Stains. Heartbroken and conflicted, Porter must make choices that will affect Shelby and her fiance and that will tear apart her church and small town. As she grapples with the implications of Shelby's accusation, Porter is forced to confront an episode from her own high school days that has colored her life and feelings of self-worth. There is also an absorbing subplot about Porter's past supernatural ability to find lost children, which contrasts sharply to her present state: "Nowadays," she confesses, "I can't even find myself." Bedford (A Morning Like This; Harvest Dance), formerly a romance novelist in the general market, shows her veteran writing experience throughout the book by laying false trails, creating multifaceted characters and keeping her descriptions vivid but succinct. Porter's reconciliation with her past may feel a little too easy to some, and the ending is contrived in order to punish the guilty party. However, this is a well-told tale that should appeal to readers of faith who enjoy an inspirational love story wrapped around deeper issues.

One of the best books of the year!
By Shelly Thacker
This is a moving, superb keeper of a book. The subject matter is daring, the characters truly special, and the question of who's telling the truth--Shelby or Charlie--will keep you turning pages 'til dawn. Best of all, the writing is simply stunning. It's rare these days to find an author of popular fiction--whether in the ABA or CBA market--who has such an exquisite eye for detail and a genuine love of the English language. With every page, Ms. Bedford brings her setting and characters to vibrant life. You'll feel as if you're standing beside them in their struggles, discovering God's grace at the most unexpected moments. Don't miss this book.

Good reading here...
By Huntress Reviews
Sometimes, you don't want the answers to your questions, as Lydia Porter learns when she pushes troubled student Shelby Tatum to tell her what's wrong. Shelby reveals that she has been violated by a teacher, and not just any teacher. The man who hurt her is Lydia's fiance', Charlie Stains. Suddenly, Lydia is caught in a nightmare between doing what is right and standing beside the man she loves, despite accusations. Desperation and prayer will lead her on a quest for the truth that will either set her free or damn her hopes.
**** This timely plotline has much to say about faith and love. Lies that seem preferrable to truth are their own trap. Christian fiction gets slammed for being too goody two shoes feel good and fuzzy. In other words, having little to do with reality. Novels like this one shatter that myth. ****

Treadmill Read
By ruthjoec
This was a treadmill book and I got through 290 pages in two nights, and at least partly as a result of that, got my star at Weight Watchers for losing 20 pounds. It was an interesting fast-moving story though I found the part about Lyddie's relationship with the student in question to be somewhat unrealistic. It is a Christian novel and deals with themes of trust, love, forgiveness and especially, the presence of God. Grade: B

From Publishers Weekly
Sheldon writes his memoir as an intense and emotional rollercoaster as only he can with battling bipolar disorder nearly his entire life. From his suicide attempt at age 17 in 1934 to the publication of his first book in 1969, Sheldon has worked hard for his accomplishments. His prolific writing career reads like a grocery list of productions spanning film, theatre, television and books. O'Malley guides listeners through the author's adventures in Hollywood and Broadway with a lively and animated tone that engages listeners. Some of his vocal caricatures for secondary characters seems questionable, instilling them with comical or bland voices that disrupt the story rather than enhance it. When 88-year-old Sheldon reads the Afterword, his voice lacks O'Malley's energy. As a bonus feature, Sheldon is also interviewed about his life and the writing of this book. Though he repeats some anecdotes from his book, listeners will still enjoy the additional words from the author.

Another Sidney Sheldon Treat
By L. F. Guimaraes
I have read every book Sidney Sheldon has written to date and, although his recent novels are not as good as his earlier ones, he is still my favorite storyteller. I was lucky to get an advance reader's copy of his autobiography before the publication date and have already finished reading it. If you like his novels, then you will definitely enjoy reading this book. The only reason I didn't give the book five stars is that he included very little information about his career as a novel writer. The bulk of the book is about the challenges he faced early in his career as a screenplay and musical writer for which he is less known. I guess this is why he called the book 'The Other Side of Me.' In addition, I felt that he could have expanded more on his encounters with really famous people (Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, etc.). He only wrote two lines about each of them and yet he dedicated a lot of pages to people we have never heard of. Lastly, there was almost nothing about Sidney Sheldon today - his domestic life, his daily activities, his writing routine, his book signing tours, etc. Despite all this, he tells his life story as engagingly as he tells his fictional stories and reading this book was great fun.

Going Strong
By Kevin Killian
Hope I'm still doing as good when I'm 88! This memoir by the author of so many wonderful books and movies (and TV shows) came as quite a surprise. I guess in the back of my head I had always suspected that Sidney Sheldon had a background on Broadway and Hollywood, but this reveals that he knew everybody and he knew them all intimately, the bad and the beautiful, and he relates incidents that occurred sixty years ago with the immediacy of a Quentin Tarantino melodrama. For sheer disaster, Sheldon provides a blow by blow account of the sinking of his ill-fated 1944 musical DREAM WITH MUSIC, in which everything that could possibly go wrong did, and on opening night with the critics all watching. I'd love to see it, that's for sure.

There's also portraits of all the stars, some of them more nasty than others. Those of you who disliked Harry Cohn, king creep of Columbis Studios, won't like him any better after hearing what he did to poor Donna Reed in this book, in Sidney's hearing! However Zsa Zsa Gabor, who I never really cared for, comes off as pretty gemutlich in Sidney's version of the way she introduced him to the woman, Jorja Curtright, who would become his wife and the mother of his children. His growing love for Jorja, and the birth of their children, is well told. When one of their daughters has a terrifying childhood illness, the story gains real momentum and you will be in tears by the time it is over and done with.

Despite having suffered from debilitating depression all of his life, he has been lucky in many ways. However someone should have offered to buy him the services of a fact checker, for from time to time his memory slips up and he places incidents in the wrong time frames. For example, he details the story of how the one and only Elvis Presley came to the set of one of the movies he wrote (and directed). He has this happening on the set of DREAM WIFE with Cary Grant (1953). I think that's a bit too early for Elvis. Maybe it happened but if so, it was probably later on in Elvis' career.

The reader falls off a cliff at the end.
By RAH
The pace of his book felt like going through one of his manic periods. The timeline keeps accelerating and accelerating, and the closer you get to the current era, the more and more he would just skim through things. He provides great detail about his parents and his early years, but he zips right through the 1970s in a couple of pages, covers his book career in barely that much, and covers most everything since 1979 in a quick epilogue. I felt strangely unsatisfied when I was finished reading it, and I wonder if he may have felt the same about the last quarter-century.

I give it three stars because the story is very compelling into the 1960's - but it's a shame he didn't give the rest of his professional life since then the same depth of coverage.

From Publishers Weekly
Plenty of believable action plus heavy doses of insider atmosphere add zest to Haig's fifth suspense thriller to feature army lawyer Sean Drummond (after 2003's Private Sector). It might be nothing like the real White House or even TV's The West Wing, but the center of American power as envisioned by Haig is a potent myth, a modern-day Arthurian Round Table serving as a source of lessons and high drama. Now part of the CIA's Office of Special Projects, Drummond is assigned to protect the president against the enemies who threaten his life. The novel opens on a powerful note with the discovery in a posh suburban Virginia house of six bullet-ridden bodies, including that of the White House chief of staff. Could there be a connection between this massacre and the $100 million bounty someone has put on the head of the U.S. president? Helped by attractive, no-nonsense FBI agent Jennifer Margold, the wise-cracking Drummond first goes after a rogue member of the White House security detail, but things are not what they seem. After some serious shooting and explosions, Drummond and Margold are still only a day away from the likely murder of the president. Haig makes us care what happens by avoiding genre clichés whenever possible and by creating much sympathy for the relatives left behind in the carnage.

From Booklist
Sean Drummond, the JAG attorney whose crime-solving skills are almost matched by his ability to tick people off, has a new assignment: working for the Office of Special Projects, a CIA offshoot. Not long after his reassignment, Drummond is called to a murder scene where one of the six victims is the White House Chief of Staff and where a note was found in which the assassin threatens the life of the president. In this kind of thriller, the outcome isn't much of a mystery; it's how we get to the outcome that counts, and Haig leads us there through a series of plot twists, shortcuts, and dead ends that never fail to keep us on our toes. Haig is still developing as a novelist, and readers familiar with his previous books will note that Haig's appeal is no longer purely plot driven. Action is still his calling card, but his supporting characters are becoming more fleshed out, his dialogue smoother. The best Sean Drummond thriller has yet to be written, but this one is very good indeed. David Pitt

Review
"Haig is...just hitting his stride. This is one of his best books, suspenseful, intelligent, and action packed. Just think The Firm with a serial killer, spies, more action--and better writing."

Better and Better by Haig
By Tracy L Karol
The President's Assassin

I admit it. I'm addicted to Brian Haig. In the past two weeks I've read every book he's written (well, I'm almost done with "Man in the Middle") and I'll probably go into withdrawal until he releases a new book, as I've already read "The Hunted."

In this outing, our hero Sean Drummond has sufficiently annoyed his bosses that they've loaned him out to the CIA. That doesn't stop his wise-cracking, smart-mouthed tactic, however. The book opens with a murder scene (a particularly bad one) and the clock starts ticking on a seeming threat to the president's life.

Drummond is paired with a by-the-book FBI agent who is also an ace profiler. And Drummond is angry about these murders (more come in the following days). Not so much the political ones as the senseless murders of a Secret Service agent, the brutality shown by the killers, and more. The crimes quickly escalate and a suspect is identified. To say more here would be a spoiler, but Haig truly makes you feel the pain of the victims no one seems to care about and you understand his anger.

I read this book, as usual, in about a day or so. Drummond reminds me of John Corey, the hero in Nelson DeMille's novels (Plum Island, The Lion's Game). As I've rushed through Haig's books I don't understand why I never heard of him before and why he isn't a top name author. He really is that good. I hope he comes out with another book soon. I am thoroughly enjoying "Man in the Middle." Review to come soon, along with others of the previous books in this series. This one will leave you guessing up until the end, though you might have a clue about the bad guy.

Highly recommended.

Hard to put down. A stunning ending.
By Kindle Customer
My first Brian Haig book but not my last. Sean Drummond is bright and funny. Mr Haig makes Drummond into a believable hero and leading character. Haig's writing style is awesome. It moves along so fast, but is written so conversational that you don't miss anything. The novel is action packed right from the beginning. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

Title is a bit off, but the story is right on.
By Benjamin Gaumond
The very title of this book is misleading. It suggests that the President of the United States is the predominant character in the book. It does not become the case at any point. It is the President's Chief of Staff who ultimately becomes the focus on what is a more broad conspiracy whereby the President is supposedly (based on some piece of paper) the ultimate target.

The real plot is in how various other persons (including a Supreme Court justice) start dying left & right. It becomes a vast extortion plot that takes twists and turns along the way. The book should be called something else, but what's inside the book means more than the outside, so I don't dock too many points for that.

The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr.From Carson, Clayborne (EDT)

Using Stanford University's voluminous collection of archival material, including previously unpublished writings, interviews, recordings, and correspondence, King scholar Clayborne Carson has constructed a remarkable first-person account of Dr. King's extraordinary life.

Amazon.com Review
Celebrated Stanford University historian Clayborne Carson is the director and editor of the Martin Luther King Papers Project; with thousands of King's essays, notes, letters, speeches, and sermons at his disposal, Carson has organized King's writings into a posthumous autobiography. In an early student essay, King prophetically penned: "We cannot have an enlightened democracy with one great group living in ignorance.... We cannot have a nation orderly and sound with one group so ground down and thwarted that it is almost forced into unsocial attitudes and crime." Such statements, made throughout King's career, are skillfully woven together into a coherent narrative of the quest for social justice. The autobiography delves, for example, into the philosophical training King received at Morehouse College, Crozer Theological Seminary, and Boston University, where he consolidated the teachings of Afro-American theologian Benjamin Mays with the philosophies of Locke, Rousseau, Gandhi, and Thoreau. Through King's voice, the reader intimately shares in his trials and triumphs, including the Montgomery Boycott, the 1963 "I Have a Dream Speech," the Selma March, and the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. In one of his last speeches, King reminded his audience that "in the final analysis, God does not judge us by the separate incidents or the separate mistakes that we make, but by the total bent of our lives." Carson's skillful editing has created an original argument in King's favor that draws directly from the source, illuminating the circumstances of King's life without deifying his person. --Eugene Holley Jr.

From Publishers Weekly
Carson, director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Papers Project and author of A Knock at Midnight: Inspiration from the Great Sermons of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., has pieced together an incomplete study of King's life by supplementing his extant autobiographies (e.g., Stride Toward Freedom and Where Do We Go from Here) with previously unpublished and published writings, interviews and speeches. If King's rhetorical flourishes and use of the word "negro" sometimes seem outdated, the compilation still offers a concise first-person account of his life from his birth in Atlanta in 1929 to his awakening social consciousness and discovery of the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. History propelled King to center stage in the struggle for black liberation. When Rosa Parks refused to surrender her bus seat in 1955, the "once dormant and quiescent Negro community was now fully awake" and King, along with many others in Montgomery's black community, organized the bus boycott that would launch King into his leadership role in the civil rights movement. The book offers glimpses of King's family life as well a view of famous Americans such as Stokely Carmichael, Malcolm X and JFK. (In 1960, King did not feel "there was much difference between Kennedy and Nixon." He writes, "I felt at points that he was so concerned about being President of the United States that he would compromise basic principles.") But what is most evident throughout Carson's study is the moral courage that sustained King and allowed him to inspire a largely peaceful mass movement against segregation in the face of bloody reprisals. (Dec.) FYI: In November, Carol Publishing will release Seventh Child: A Family Memoir of Malcolm X, by his nephew Rodnell P. Collins. ($21.95 230p ISBN 1-55972-491-9)

Carson (history, Stanford Univ.) threads together what King wrote or said at various times, creating an "eloquent and expressive narrative that moves from the early years to the unfulfilled dreams of the slain Civil Rights leader."

Good Read
By Amazon Customer
I'm so grateful that I waited until now to read this book, and didn't read it years prior when I would have lacked the mental maturity to recognize the true power of nonviolent resistance! I'm forever grateful to Dr. King for his many contributions, and great sacrifice.

"True pacifism is not unrealistic submission to evil power, as Niebuhr contends. It is rather a courageous confrontation of evil by the power of love, in the faith that it is better to be the recipient of violence than the inflictor of it, since the latter only multiplies the existence of violence and bitterness in the universe, while the former may develop a sense of shame in the opponent, and thereby bring about a transformation and change of heart." - "The Autobiography Of Martin Luther King, Jr." Edited by Clayborne Carson, Pg. 26

From Library Journal
Previously published in two separate volumes, these 19 essays by best-selling author Waller (The Bridges of Madison County, LJ 3/1/92) provide various, intimate, and stimulating reflections. Among them are his expressions of love for a newly grown daughter ("Excavating Rachael's Room"), a loving tribute to his wife of over 30 years ("Slow Waltz for Georgia Ann"), portraits of personal and often irregular heroes ("The Boy from the Burma Hump"), and multiple celebrations of things that he loves. These include music, travel, basketball, nature, and, above all, romance. In the revelation of his loves, one0 discovers the essential Waller, a man who writes both to find and to express himself. In sharing his own strong passions, Waller demonstrates his gift for expressing feelings that all people have but do not think that others have. Public libraries will want this.

Wonderful Read
By Amazon Customer
I enjoyed reading this biography of writings by Robert James Waller. I, too, felt he was very similar to Robert Fulghum in his approach to life; a reverence for all that is simple and beautiful in this world. After reading only his fictional works, I gained a deep appreciation of the author himself and am refreshed that someone with a PhD in business can have a soul.

Robert James Waller Is Inspiring!
By A Customer
Several years ago I attempted to read "The Bridges of Madison County" but the mood wasn't right. Eventually, I attempted to listen to it on audiocassette (against my better judgement, as I truly prefer to read the books) and had the opportunity to hear the author read it the way he wanted it to be heard. Finally!! I understood what everyone was talking about! I then acquired all of his other books and slowly but surely tried to get through them between all of my other readings. I truly loved "Puerto Vallarta Squeeze" but put off reading his other books for almost two years. Recently, I sat down and read "Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend" and "Border Music" within a two-day period. I immediately knew that I had to read "Old Songs in A New Cafe" while the mood was still with me.
From the moment that I opened the book I felt as though I was meeting a most incredible person. His essays were truly inspiring! I was impressed by his ability to express his emotions and his thoughts with such ease. While it is commonly surprising for a man to express such thoughts and emotions, there was only one person who came to mind while I read this book: MY FATHER. I thought of him so many times while I read about his romance with his wife and his feelings about his daughter growing up and creating a life for herself. Halfway through the essays, I spoke to my father and explained that the book (that he had purchased for me for Christmas 1995) would be returned to him immediately upon my completion because, of everyone that I know, he is the only one who could TRULY appreciate the enjoyment I received from this book. When he received the book and began reading the essays, he stated to me that Robert James Waller writes the way he thinks and would like to write. He also referred specifically to the essays about Waller's wife and daughter. I have often thought it incredible that authors like Robert James Waller and Nicholas Sparks ("The Notebook") were men because they write with such sensitivity about life and love and yet, it should not be so incredible, because I have a father who proves that many men also live that way!
Thank you Robert James Waller for pointing that out!

Review
Praise for David Edings: 'My ideal summer read... Having enjoyed the entire ten-book serial, I was delighted to be able to read this latest addition as it not only provides fantastic escapism in itself, but, being a prequel, will make my re-reading of the other books all the more fascinating.' The Irish Times 'All the verve and pace we've come to expect.' The Dark Side 'Offers an absorbing storyline and some memorable characters as, once again, the author touches all the right fantasy bases, with warring gods, political intrigues, supernatural creatures and appealingly human magicians involved in a titanic war over the course of seven millennia. Eddings fans will no doubt snatch this novel off the shelves while readers new to the authors' world won't find a more appropriate place to begin exploring it.' Publishers Weekly 'There's no denying Eddings' offerings do entertain. This novel is for fantasy fans fed up with more fusty fare, or for anyone who likes mischief and merriment.' West Australian

HORRIBLE
By Amazon Customer
This book (and series) is both very different and very similar from the Belgariad and Mallorean. It is very different because it lacks the originality, style, wit, and charm of its predecessors. It is very similar because all of the characters from the previous series (including Elenium and Tamuli) have been regurgitated into this series. The characters are cookie-cut--but that's not the worst part. For some reason, the authors had difficulty separating their characters into distinct personalities--the characters all say the same things, speak the same way. This third book is particularly disappointing because the authors waste a lot of pages retelling us things we already know--either things from the previous books or things that happened earlier in the book. We are retold many things MULTIPLE TIMES in this book. The wit and charm in the Eddings' writing style and their characters from the previous series have become stale and overused in this series. As an avid fan of the Belgariad and Mallorean (of which the books "Polgara" and "Belgarath" are MASTERPIECES), I am really sad to say that the authors have completely lost their touch.

Amazon.com Review
This is Nalo Hopkinson's debut novel, which came to attention when it won the Warner Aspect First Novel Contest. It tells the story of Ti-Jeanne, a young woman in a near-future Toronto that's been all but abandoned by the Canadian government. Anyone who can has retreated from the chaos of the city to the relative safety of the suburbs, and those left in "the burn" must fend for themselves. Ti-Jeanne is a new mother who's trying to come to grips with her as- yet-unnamed baby and also trying to end her relationship with her drug-addict boyfriend Tony. But a passion still burns between the young lovers, and when Tony runs afoul of Rudy, the local ganglord, Ti-Jeanne convinces her grandmother Gros-Jeanne to help out. Gros-Jeanne is a Voudoun priestess, and it's clear that Ti-Jeanne has inherited some of her gifts. Although Ti-Jeanne wants nothing to do with the spirit world, she soon finds herself caught up in a battle to the death with Rudy and the mother she thought she lost long ago. --Craig E. Engler

From Publishers Weekly
The musical rhythms of Caribbean voices and the earthy spirit-magic of obeah knit together this unusual fantasy, the first winner of Warner Aspect's First Novel Contest. Toronto in the next century is a "doughnut hole city," its core collapsed into ruinous slums after much of the population left to escape rising urban crime and violence. Those who remain in the Burn are survivors like Ti-Jeanne and her grandmother Mami, who trade herbal cures and spells for necessities, or predators like drug-lord Rudy and the "posse" of men, including Ti-Jeanne's ex-lover Tony, who sell "buff" for him. Outside the Burn, Catherine Uttley, the premier of Ontario, needs a heart transplant and a boost in her approval ratings. To accomplish both, she announces support for a return to voluntary human organ donation, allegedly to prevent the spread of Virus Epsilon, sometimes found in the porcine organs grown for transplant. The heart she needs will have to come from someone in the Burn, and Rudy saddles Tony with the job of finding a donor. Tony has no stomach for the job, however, and goes to Ti-Jeanne and Mami for help, bringing the unpredictable and powerful spirits of Caribbean obeah into play. Though the story sometimes turns too easily on coincidence, Hopkinson's writing is smooth and assured, and her characters lively and believable. She has created a vivid world of urban decay and startling, dangerous magic, where the human heart is both a physical and metaphorical key.

From School Library Journal
YA-An outstanding science-fiction novel by a Jamaican-born novelist. The setting is post-modern Toronto. The inner city's economic base has collapsed; the police and most of civilization have deserted and roadblocked the city, leaving the homeless, poor, and criminals behind. The heroine, Ti-Jeanne, and her infant son live with her grandmother on a small herbal "farm" from which they dispense folk-medicine treatments to the other disenfranchised inhabitants of the "Burn." The story combines African and Jamaican folklore, religion, and patois as Ti-Jeanne learns to understand the ancient spirits that are so important in her family's history. The tragedies of her mother and grandmother must be understood and corrected, and only Ti-Jeanne can do it, if she can face her own fears. A page-turner that builds to an exciting conclusion, this quickly read fantasy will have lots of appeal to young adults.

Octavia Butler's True Literary Offspring
By Nichole Long
In Charles Saunders' essay titled "Why Blacks Should Read (And Write) Science Fiction," Nalo Hopkinson was pointed out by Saunders as being "Octavia Butler's true literary child." While Hopkinson "doesn't imitate Butler," he reminded us, she did "imitate the older writer's strenghts in plotting and characterization (Dark Matter, ed. by Sheree R. Thomas, 2000)." Saunders was right. What a debut. This first novel was enthralling. It was so good that up-and-coming fantasy novelist Nalo Hopkinson had managed to win both heady praise from Butler herself and a Warner Aspect First Novel Award.
Brown Girl in the Ring had everything. Smooth, yet urgent prose. Heart-stopping action. A thriving Caribbean-Vodoun culture in Canada. Soul-deadening urban decay. Vibrant Caribbean speech. Evil that makes your skin crawl. Using the power of the old ways of her ancestors, hero Ti-Jeanne must come of age in near-future Toronto by confronting the forces that threaten to overcome her neighborhood, her family, and her life. Even though I had read this book nearly 4 years ago, it is still in my head. It was and still is that good.
More that 3 decades ago, Octavia E. Butler revolutionized the heart of science-fantasy writing, setting tough new standards of excellence. With Brown Girl in the Ring, Nalo Hopkinson has met that challenge admirably. I know Butler must be proud.

What's a girl to do? Use magic, of course.
By Kelly (Fantasy Literature)
I have no idea why the publishers are calling this science fiction. It's really more of a horror/fantasy blend; the only sci-fi element I can think of is the near-future setting. Which suits me just fine. ;)
The world of _Brown Girl_ is frighteningly plausible--it is the logical conclusion of our current suburban sprawl and consequent urban decay. Here, even the city government has fled to the suburbs, and no one is left in the inner city but the poor. There is no electricity, no sewer system. You can't get into the hospital unless you are wealthy. And Rudy, the diabolical crime boss of Toronto, is selling organs to these hospitals--and let's just say the donors are less than willing.
And in this city lives Ti-Jeanne (Little Jeanne), a new mother, staying with her wise grandmother, Gros-Jeanne (Big Jeanne). Gros-Jeanne wants to pass on her knowledge to Ti-Jeanne, but Ti-Jeanne only grudgingly learns herbal skills, and wants nothing to do with Gros-Jeanne's other talent--the practice of Afro-Caribbean magic. Then one night they hold a ritual to help Ti-Jeanne's deadbeat ex-boyfriend, and the spirits tell Ti-Jeanne that it is her destiny to stop Rudy's evil.
We are sucked in, as Ti-Jeanne's course becomes more irrevocable, as she comes to accept the orishas, and as her ex-boyfriend's fear and drug addiction drive him into worse and worse trouble. Ti-Jeanne's only hope lies in her wits and in half-remembered bits of magical lore. An engrossing read; however, don't buy this if you object to violence. There is a good bit of that.

Hopkinson avoids gimicks
By A Customer
Perhaps the best aspect of this book, for me at least, was that Hopkinson integrates the loa into her book without making them seem hokey. In other urban fantasy books I have read, it sometimes seems as if the author almost puts the notice "OK, I'm putting in the magic now." before any supernatural elements enter. Hopkinson, on the other hand, describes the supernatural, the spirits that Ti-Jeanne sees and interacts with, as an insider, as if they were as accepted a fact to the readers as microwave ovens or computers. It was very refreshing to see voudoun presented in this light. I'd highly recommend this book to any who are interested in Afro-Carribean culture and mythology. Even if you're not, I'd try to persuade you to read it, it's a bit rough at times, but overall excellent for a first novel.

Egypt's Greatest Pharaoh Comes to Life
By Frank T. Klus
The young Ramses stared the bull in the face. He was afraid. The bull was so fierce. The young prince turned to his father, Seti I, for help. "You're sending me to my death", cried the young boy. The pharaoh responded "You must become the light of your people, shining like the sun. You were hidden in my hand like a star; today I am setting you free. To shine-or to vanish!" Thus would begin the long and vibrant career of Egypt's greatest pharaoh. The first of a five-volume set, Christian Jacq's novel of the life of Ramses the Great begins with the king's early life in Egypt.
The supremely confident prince thought he was certain to succeed his father to the Horus Throne, but he was the only one who did. His brother, Shanaar, was the designated heir and he was jealous of his younger brother. His teacher said his name isn't even mentioned in court circles. He was told to leave town. Yet the prince was driven toward power and would never settle for anything less. He had a friend who felt the same way. A fire inside him driving him toward something great. That man was Moses. Even at a young age he began questioning the gods and was troubled by dreams he couldn't understand.
Life would not be easy for the young prince. He would face many obstacles that would put his life in danger. His father was an enigma to him-leaving him to believe he was testing him for greatness and then abandoning him. If he was the Son of Light he would have to battle the forces of darkness and they would come from people very close to him.
In ancient Egyptian culture the pharaoh was the protector of ma'at, the protector of order. To prove he was worthy of the honor he would have to prove it in the great battleground of Egypt. It would be order against chaos; light against darkness; and those storm clouds would gather threatening to consume the light before it had a chance to shine.
Christian Jacq weaves together an exciting tale, based on the life of Ramses II of Egypt. This was the time of Moses and we're introduced to him as a young teenage friend of the Prince. It was also the time of the battle of Troy and in Greek mythology Menelaus and Helen were forced by a great storm to the shores of Egypt. Jacq even has Homer conversing with the Crown Prince sharing his stories and philosophy with him. Finally, there is the living pharaoh, Seti I, who is seen as the gentle and wise ruler imparting his wisdom to his son. It is an exciting beginning to what promises to be one the ancient world's most gloriest of times.

Ramses for Dummies
By A Customer
This book only works for kids (13 at most). Maybe it is translator's fault, but the language reminded me of a comic book. I guess I am used to the prose of Pauline Gedge who submerges the reader into the mysteries of ancient Egypt. Ramses is more of a fairy tale-like simplification with a primitive dialog that can be heard in a modern junior high school. (who could have ever called a royal prince a "dummy"! ) As I said, it may work for kids, but if you are over 13, don't bother!

Pulp fiction dressed up as historical fiction
By Gary Selikow
As a lover of historic novels set in ancient times, I can only say that this novel is simply pulp fiction and cannot even be termed as a historical novel.
I sincerely regret the time spent ordering it from the library and reading it.
The only reason it should get one star is because the cover and title entices people to read it.
The dialogue is flat, description is weak and the pace is plodding.
Their is nothing about ancient Egypt that is unique to it.
I am seriously surprised that the author is cited as one of Europe's leading Egyptologists, as he seems to know very little about Ancient Egyptian society (at least one gets that impression form reading his novels).
It is fine to be passionate about Ancient Egypt but to present it as a benign utopia where slavery does not exist, the death penalty only exists for the most heinous crimes, transgressions are frequently forgiven and women have equal rights is simply pathetically far from the truth.
Who doesn't know that the pyramids where built by slaves.
Slavery was part of Egypt's social structure and was rigorously enforced.
And to just place Menelaus and Helen of Troy in the middle was really lame.
Furthermore the characterization of Moses was another misnomer.
Don't spend time reading it, there are so many other historical novels of substance and that are exciting to read.

For a great novel on Ancient Egypt read The Memoirs of Cleopatra: A Novel by Margaret George
