Amazon.com Review
From Acne to Xeroderma, almost any health problem you are likely to experience has been addressed by Edgar Cayce (the sleeping prophet). I trust Cayce's information and the remedies in the Encyclopedia of Healing are 99 percent common sense: eat healthy, exercise, and reduce the stress in your life. If you're looking for some magic cure, though, you'll likely be disappointed. Keep in mind that most of these remedies were prescribed for individuals with several ailments. For this reason, I wouldn't go swallowing any strange concoctions before getting a professional opinion, but I would trust these case studies as a guide for better living.

From the Back Cover
In his psychic trances Edgar Cayce diagnosed illnesses from arthritis to sarcoma to epilepsy -- and many of his cures have been backed by recent medical science. Now -- in one easy-to-read volume -- 9,000 of Edgar Cayce's Psychic Readings have been compiled into a quick-reference encyclopedia to help usher you healthfully into the next millennium. covering nearly 200 different ailments from A to Z, including the common cold, nervous disorders, and cancers, this invaluable Cayce resource also offers in-depth descriptions of the dozens of natural remedies.

A newspaper reporter and editor who has written extensively about the Cayce Foundation, Reba Ann Karp has studied Cayce's medical readings and scrutinized the latest medical research to present this invaluable guide to better and healthier living.

About the Author
Edgar Cayce grew up in poverty and achieved only an eighth-grade education. By the time he was a teenager he was able to memorize an entire book simply by placing it near his head when he slept. As an adult, Cayce discovered that while in a trance he could diagnose illnesses. His medical readings, which were years ahead of their time, have been proven to be 90 percent accurate. His abilities helped him become a world-renowned psychic.

Cayce is President of the Association for Research and Enlightenment.

A Worthwhile Cross-Reference Tool
By Lisa D. Meyering
As a cross-reference tool for determining the underlying causes of an ailments, I've found this book to be quite insightful, if not ahead of it's time. For example, I found it very interesting that many of Edgar Cayce's remedies included methods for dealing with digestion-related problems, elimination of accumulated toxins, and restoration of a person's acid/alkaline balance. These factors are increasingly being found to be connected to many of the same diseases that Cayce referenced in this book, from asthma and gallstones, to cancer. In my opinion, his readings went far beyond ordinary common sense, particularly for his day.

healings through spiritual guides
By picky
Because Edgar Cayce did not remember any of his healings which were conducted while in a trance like condition, his secretary faithfully wrote every word as they were being prescribed. Because of her dedication to him and his work we have accurate and precise records of each healing. Patients would write back or call and tell him of the success of his medical advice and in that way he was able to continue knowing that his "guides" were trustworthy. Being interested in herbal healing and believing in the ability of certain people to attune themselves to the "other world" and information beyond our present abilities, this collection of just some of Cayce's many healings are educational and remarkable. Cayce had no formal training in medicine allowing his gift as a chairvoyant to help hundreds of people. An interesting book for anyone who wants to learn more about alternative healings and who has an open mind about psychic phenomenon.

Healing Help At Hand - for the most part.
By Readerreader
This isn't as comprehensive as I would have liked. But it is well written and easy to understand. Mentioning the currently available over the counter remedies was helpful. Not finding the specific I was looking for I went to the A.R.E.

Emissary of Light: A Vision of Peace
By Therese Marie Quinn
We have all been gifted with eternal moments, commonly sparked beneath the same mantle of sky -- moments when we felt suffused with God's peace, immersed in the certainty that all is as it should be and nothing can change the truth of things. Occasionally, our common sky holds out one star whose pulse ignites more peace-lit moments than its neighbors. Just such a star, ascendant on the New Age horizon, is Jimmy Twyman's book, "Emissary of Light."
It chronicles Peace Troubadour Twyman's unexplainable compulsion to bring his Peace Concert to war-ravaged Bosnia-Croatia, and the extraordinary events that unfold when he finally arrives. From the moment he leaves Italy, the synchronicities urging him on begin to accelerate at an alarming rate, until he finds himself secluded in a mountainous terrain, at the mercy of strangers, on the very border between Bosnia and Croatia. Into the thick of the fighting, staring straight in the face of the Bosnian Serb Army, Jimmy is led to a mythical, mystic community of peacemakers called The Emissaries of Light. For countless centuries, The Emissaries have secretly kept humanity from self-annihilation by extending Divine Light. Jimmy lives with The Emissaries, joins their intensive meditations, receives practical instruction and amazingly is entrusted with their peace-invoking secrets. It is time, they explain, for the world to learn of their work and Jimmy has been summoned as the one to reveal their story. Then suddenly, with the tumult of exploding bombs behind him, Jimmy is escorted to Rijeka and boarded on a plane bound for Chicago. But the saga does not end here, for he returns again, performs The Peace Concert in Sarajevo and narrowly escapes an assassination attempt. What follows remains for the reader to discover.
As a simple Indiana Jones-like adventure, "Emissary" comes out a winner with just the right blend of action and suspense to keep the reader wholly absorbed. But the content of this tale is so much larger than its wrappings. Framed within the adventure is a message that opens wide any light-seeker's understanding. The importance of releasing fear and stepping into the present's light, where no past or future casts a shadow on truth, is reinforced again and again in every chapter. Danger encroaches upon Jimmy and The Emissaries from all sides, but never grabs hold. As they stand firmly rooted in the light of truth, only truth can be seen, and approaching shadows melt shined away at their feet. The Emissaries remind Jimmy to stay presently receptive and demonstrate how Love's extension is accomplished through clear vision. Jimmy has come already supplied with the philosophy that Love is the only reality and The Emissaries clarify for him how to live that ideal daily. Behind the smokescreen of our judgements, the only thing we experience in truth is Love's Light. There is nothing else to be felt. By letting go of all distorting labels such as pain, anger, grief, consolation, pleasure and even happiness, we are freed to purely access the only energy there is and use it to create as we are in Love created. Thus do we peel away the last masks of illusion and return safely home where our real identity has always been known. What other path to peace could there be?
For all the light it sheds, "Emissary" is not a flashy book. Jimmy's homespun style includes the reader, invites all onlookers to join him on his journey, to sit back with him and enjoy the ride. "I'm no different than you," he tells us and we believe him. Therein flames the hope his words emblaze forever in our hearts. Twyman and his Emissaries gently restore us with a sense of purpose, a job to do and a function to fulfill. We come away from his book assured that each of us has a vital and indispensable contribution to make. He convinces us that peace is not the idle pipedream of mystics and poets, or a political game reserved for power players only, but the result of everyhuman's personal quest to uncover the impersonal already realized within his/her very core. Jimmy's passion for peace is contagious and leaves no one untouched by its transforming grace. If you are tempted to believe Author Twyman's offered blessings have run dry with the last page of his book, I recommend you find a copy of his Emissary of Light CD and listen to Troubadour Twyman sing. In his music swells a celestial certainty that his blessings, in union with ours, runneth over eternally.

Doubt it
By Margaret Bartley
I felt ripped off and deceived as I finished the book. It started out so promising.

But, by the time I got to the last chapter, I was getting more and more skeptical, and by the time I closed the book, I was starting to mentally tick off the points that were irritants.

If he had posited this as an allegory, it wouldn't have been so bad, but I find it really difficult to believe that in a war zone, a group of 25 or 30 people, who are at least four or six hours away from a car, and thus have to hike in all their food, have apples, oranges and lemons around the kitchen. And bread. When they drove in, they didn't mention another car there - where is the car that the community uses to get to town to buy the fruit and bread?

It's possible that they didn't hike to town to buy bread, but if they brought in flour, same issue, plus you have to deal with the fact that these people have 12 hour work shifts, and have to sleep and do building and life maintenance, so when do they have time to bake bread?

SPOILER -don't read this next part if you haven't read the book!
I can understand making themselves invisible to the soldiers, but how can they make a field of grain or an orchard invisible? If they were growing what they were using, they would need a considerable-sized farm, not to mention hired servants and field hands. I've had a garden before, and it's not a matter of getting down on your hands and knees - you need serious tools. Each plant only produces a small amount, you need many plants, espcially if you are going to feed 25 or 30 people.

I wasn't sure about the women that were in the background, whether they were part of the 12 helpers, or if they did the kitchen duty while the 24 were in the Light house.

It's totally ludicrous. I've been in communities who are trying to be self-sufficient, and they were eating nettles and greens and had farm animals like chickens and goats, and they didn't eat a lot of bread or fruit. And they all had cars to get to town. And they spent all their time taking care of the buildings and managing the farm.

If there were cars at the abandoned farm where they left their car, to hike to the village, and Twyman just didn't mention them, I find it hard to believe the soldiers would drive past it and not notice or take those cars, especially since they have to have enough gas in them to drive for hours.

The other part I didn't like was the actual content of the teachings.
Maybe Twyman is so advanced that he just was able to just poof away his fears, but most people have their fears drilled into them from early childhood. It's part of the acculturation that we do to children in our society. The very act of putting a newborn baby by itself for hours at night is extremely traumatic. Can you imagine a moma wolf or bear ignoring her scared crying babies a few feet away from her? Yet, we do that to almost all our children - make them cry themselves to sleep every night. That is terrifying. And that's the least of the traumas we do to our kids. Many adults throw their anger at their children - to frighten them. Many adults actually hit their kids to frighten them. This is a deep trauma that is not easily broken by a few hours of thought exercise.

As I said, perhaps Twyman was so spiritually advanced that he was able to overcome a family history of traumatic injury, or maybe he choose a paternal and maternal line before he was born that was unique in not having that family sickness of hurting their children, and thus was able to easily visualize his fear away, but it's not reasonable to assume that he has the ability to transfer that to others. Dealing with somatic fear is a non-trivial issue.

The other major thing that irritated me is that he impllied, in the last chapter, that time was of great import. It was a matter of days between when he finished the book, got an agent, and publisher, and was on his way back to Sarajevo. After thousands of years, these workers' work is done, yet that was fifteen years ago. What's the big rush? What's Twyman done since then? Where's the Big Change?

The part between when he arrived in Chicago and his second concert seemed like it was real. I've done a lot of of travelling, and one of my favorite things to do is to meet others and listen to their stories. This sounds like a real story. But then, the story from the village of the vision of Mary to the end went back to being not very credible or realistic-sounding. It just didn't have the ring of authenticity to it, not to mention the vapid, done-a-million-times-already grand finale.

As I said, when I finished the book, I felt ripped off. I claim this book is phoney. I wasted about half a day of my life I could have been reading something good.

Paranormal/Suspense Romance
By J. Kaye Oldner
Two of my most favorite genres are thrillers and romance. Romantic suspense is a combo of the two. The downside to some I've read is there isn't enough of the suspense. This sub-genre, in my opinion, should be a thriller with hot sex scenes and at the end, the guy gets the girl. SIGHT UNSEEN was just that. This book started with danger from the very beginning and didn't end until the next to the last chapter.

Raven Callahan is an honest thief with a rare psychic ability. She's able to read the emotions people left behind from objects. She works for the Antiquities Preservation Institute to recover stolen objects. This ability comes in handy as she is able to authenticate her findings.

Twice she has met Dax Maddox. The first time was as a cop and he suspected she was a thief. The second time is where this story blossoms. He's quit the force and now on the trail of his partner's killer. When the killer kidnaps Raven's partner, they must team up in order to catch him. Both have a dark past and with a strong attraction towards the other.

SIGHT UNSEEN has the right combo of suspense and romance. What an outstandingly balanced book! Her next book, OUT OF TIME, has Raven's sister, Jillian, as the main character. I look forward to continue on with this series.

Everything Present
By Ruth L
Raven is running, but can't seem to get away from Dax, the ex-cop determined to keep up with her. When she stops running long enough for him to get closer....whooeee! 'Sight Unseen' has everything I love in a romance novel: plausibility, a slow build up to the hot romance, interesting places, full characters, page turning suspense and a good story to bring it all together. I'll be buying Samantha's next book.

Amazon.com Review
Stephen King and Nelson DeMille on Ed McBain

I think Evan Hunter, known by that name or as Ed McBain, was one of the most influential writers of the postwar generation. He was the first writer to successfully merge realism with genre fiction, and by so doing I think he may actually have created the kind of popular fiction that drove the best-seller lists and lit up the American imagination in the years 1960 to 2000. Books as disparate as The New Centurions, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, The Godfather, Black Sunday, and The Shining all owe a debt to Evan Hunter, who taught a whole generation of baby boomers how to write stories that were not only entertaining but that truthfully reflected the times and the culture. He will be remembered for bringing the so-called "police procedural" into the modern age, but he did so much more than that. And he was one hell of a nice man. --Stephen King

Way back in the mid-1970s, when I was a new writer and police series were very big, my editor asked me to do a series called Joe Ryker, NYPD. I had no idea how to write a police detective novel, but the editor handed me a stack of books and said, “These are the 87th Precinct novels by Ed McBain. Read them and you’ll know everything you need to know about police novels.” After I read the first book--which I think was Let’s Hear It for the Deaf Man--I was hooked, and I read every Ed McBain I could get my hands on. Then I sat down and wrote my own detective novel, The Sniper, featuring Joe Ryker. My series never reached the heights of the 87th Precinct series, but by reading those classic masterpieces, I learned all I needed to know about urban crime and how detectives think and act. And I had a hell of a time learning from the master. Years later, when I actually got to meet Ed McBain/Evan Hunter, I told him this story, and he said, “I would have liked it better if my books inspired you to become a detective instead of becoming my competition.” Evan and I became friends, and I was privileged to know him and honored to be in his company. I remain indebted to him for his good advice over the years. But most of all, I thank him for hundreds of hours of great reading. --Nelson DeMille

I have enjoyed the 87 Precinct Series so far

I have enjoyed the 87 Precinct Series so far. The only negative I find.....I would like perhaps a double space when switching scenes when it is not the beginning of a new chapters.

Recommended for first time readers of Ed McBain.
By John Austin
After producing 87th Precinct crime novels regularly for fifteen years, Ed McBain issued this one in 1971. He uses a variant on the usual formula. Crimes investigated by most of the sixteen detectives on the Police Squad in one twenty-four hour period are presented. Robbery, prostitution, paedophilia, suicide, drug offences, assassination, murder, missing persons, ghosts - all these things come to the attention of the regular officers that feature in McBain's books. The cross-cutting and the editing techniques now so familiar to viewers of TV police procedural programs are here initiated by McBain.
As usual, McBain displays unerring skill at presenting scenes and characters vividly and economically. Especially realistic is the dialogue.
Readers who wish to be introduced to an Ed McBain crime novel are recommended to start with this one. Shorter than most, but tightly-packed, it provides the reader with quick access to the realism, sleaze and sensation that comprise the McBain formula.

A Great introduction to McBain
By Mark S. Winger
This was my first 87th precinct novel, and it definitely has me looking forward to more. This actually reads more like an episode of NYPD Blue, than a mystery novel, but it is a solid introduction to a group of characters I was not familiar with. The book is short and flies quickly. It is a 24 hour segment, covering both the night and day shift and 3-4 crimes that the detectives deal with and solve during their shift. If this seems like a cliche at all, realize that this was written before Hill Street Blues, or Homicide, or NYPD Blue so this format is years ahead of that television trend and is before Joseph Wambaugh's similar style. I highly recommend this book. It'll go quick and will have you in search of more McBain books.

Stormy Weather, by Carl Hiaasen

A hilarious new novel of greed and corruption from the bestselling author of "Strip Tease". The story focuses on southern Florida at the height of the tourist season, when a ferocious hurricane hits--luring con artists, carpetbaggers, and would-be saviors like hyenas to the lion's kill. "Hiaasen himself is a one-man force of nature".

Hiaasen's latest seriocomic Florida thriller spent seven weeks on PW's bestseller list.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Take one devastating Florida hurricane, a New York couple on their honeymoon, a skull-juggling but sensitive guy, one former governor turned Everglades hermit, two small-time con artists, a corrupt building inspector, two state troopers, a hapless insurance agent, and what do you have? The recipe for Hiaasen's (Native Tongue, LJ 9/1/91) sixth novel, a delightful romp that is by turns hilarious and moving. These strange characters maneuver through a broken landscape as if born to it, and the author's control of both style and narrative keeps the novel from slipping into silliness. The crimes plotted are minor aspects of a fiction that explores the intersection of the grotesque and the human. Buy wherever good fiction is read.

From Booklist
If you share Carl Hiaasen's view of southern Florida as a "culture in terminal moral hemorrhage," then it's hard not to see a hurricane as a form of biblical revenge--nature taking a little of its own back from the neon jungle. The problem, however, as Hiaasen shows us in his latest novel, set in the days immediately following Hurricane Andrew, is that Florida's mutant forms of human sleaze have the survival instincts of cockroaches. Like carpetbaggers descending on the post^-Civil War South, the con artists, looters, and thrill seekers who emerge in Andrew's aftermath bring a new and virulent form of pestilence to an already ravaged landscape. Hiaasen follows the activities of a typically bizarre group of hurricane scammers: a can-do girl who, frustrated in her attempts to sleep with a Kennedy, hopes to perpetrate an insurance scam; her deformed, ex-con partner, the archetypal loose cannon; a Madison Avenue advertising executive intent on videotaping the carnage to amuse the guys back at the office; and a crooked building examiner who approved many of the substandard houses that Andrew summarily blew away. Swirling around this dangerous though hysterically inept bunch is the enigmatic Skink, ex-governor turned hermit and avenging angel. Committed to a radical "pest control" plan, Skink, who has surfaced in previous Hiaasen adventures, drives the action with a deranged yet altruistic frenzy. Combining slapstick nightmare, black comedy, and moral outrage in just the right proportions, Hiaasen's surrealistic vision of Florida on the brink of Armageddon bears comparison to Nathanael West's Hollywood and Malcolm Lowry's Mexico. One of Hiaasen's best early books
By Rob H
If you believe that there's a little good in everyone, then Stormy Weather and Carl Hiaasen are not for you.

Stormy Weather is classic Hiaasen. His writing is so sarcastic and unrestrained by reality that it reminds me a little of Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) or Neil Stevenson (Snow Crash). Interestingly, these are science fiction authors and Hiaasen doesn't write science fiction, but, like these science fiction writers, Hiaasen's writing is modern and clever and his imagination knows no limits. His books are parodies of human nature, especially greed and stupidity, sort of like Voltaire's Candide. After painting such surreal pictures of a cast of very selfish characters, often criminals, Hiaasen then draws upon some Dante as he assigns the characters to their inevitable and well-earned unique circles of hell (that's usually in Florida involving water, alligators, or at least a storm). It says something about a writer when his best known hero is a one-eyed crazy man who lives in the everglades but used to be the governor of the great state of Florida.

If you like the sarcastic social comedy of George Carlin, the ironic wit of Steven Wright, and the slapstick of Peter Sellers, then you will love Carl Hiaasen's Stormy Weather. If you find Carlin offensive, Wright unfunny, and Sellers overrated, then you're going to hate Carl Hiaasen.

If you're new to Hiaasen's books, Stormy Weather is a good place to start. My favorite Hiaasen books are: Strip Tease, 1993; Stormy Weather, 1995; Lucky You, 1997; Sick Puppy, 2000; and Skinny Dip, 2004.

Big Hurricane, Big Scams, Big Trouble
By Dennis Keithly
Given the recent hurricanes Katrina and Rita that hit the United States in the past year, 'Stormy Weather,' by Carl Hiaasen, seemed like a timely read. This novel tells a story of tourists, native Floridians, scam artists, and insurance adjusters as they interact in Miami after a Hurricane strikes.

Max and Bonnie Lamb are honeymooning in Disney World when the hurricane hits Florida. Bonnie just wants to resume the honey moon festivities, but her husband, Max, an advertising rep, sees an opportunity to impress his bosses and drags Bonnie down to Miami to get footage of the destruction carved out by the storm.

Edie Marsh has been roving Florida in search of a Kennedy. Her plan has been to seduce one, and then blackmail them on her way to easy street. The plan never bears fruit. After the hurricane, she sees an opportunity to work another scam and sets off for Miami with a partner named Snapper, who acquired his nickname after an unfortunate childhoot incident left him with a deformed jaw. Edie's plans go awry when Snapper turns out to be more difficult to handle than she thought.

Augustine took a plane trip one day to discover he had spent months in a coma after the plane he was riding crashed. He also found wealth in the form of an insurance settlement. He no longer works, and spends his time dating the wrong women and juggling human skulls. Just before the hurricane strikes, he learns he had inherited his uncles exotic animal farm. After the hurricane, he has a problem: although the weather passed, the animals are loose.

Finally, there is Skink. This crazy wild man has great teeth and a protective streak for Florida's wilderness. He trusts one man, Jim Tile (one of Florida's few black highway patrolmen). He has been waiting for just the right hurricane to hit Florida, and is disappointed when this one doesn't do all he hoped for. However, when he spies a tourist taking advantage of the destruction to shoot home movies, he hatches a new plan.

These are just some of the characters that fill the pages of 'Stormy Weather.' Throughout the novel, they end up running into each other and confounding one another's plans. It's an incredibly twisted plot, but Hiaasen pulls it off perfectly.

This is more than just a spirited novel. This book allows Hiaasen to take swipes at many Florida institutions from Disney World and high rise developments to crooked politicians that sell out the environment and scam artists preying on the desperate after the hurricane. Still, the novel is a great read and to borrow a cliche, a real page turner.

I recommend this novel to anyone that wants a fun and entertaining read that falls on the edge of crime fiction. Elmore Leonard and Dave Barry fans should enjoy it immensely. Existing fans of Hiaasen will delight in getting more adventures of Skink.

Overall Grade: 5 stars.

Cloudy Grey Humor Extraordinaire!
By Elderbear
After weeks of overtime I escaped to the Sierra Foothills, hosted to a relaxing Thanksgiving weekend with Stormy Weather (thanks Bill & Karen!). The greatest disappointment of this book was that it ended before the weekend & I had no sequel!
"On August 23, the day before the hurricane struck, Max and Bonnie Lamb awoke early, made love twiece and rode the shuttle bus to Disney World." So begins this marvelously improbably tale which weaves together the paths of newlyweds, cons, thugs, and a living-off-the-land, scraggly haired ex-governor. Easy to pick up and slide into, difficult to put down, this romp into Hurricane Andrew's wake tosses quirky characters into chaos. Not as extreme as Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Adams), more of a down-home Good Omens (Pratchett & Gaiman) without devils or angels.
Character development is not intense, but the contrived situations that bring those characters to light actually seem plausible. Fewer laughs in this book and more subconscious chuckles. If you want something traditional & predictable, leave this one on the shelf and go buy Grisham or Clancy. But if a road-kill scavenging, toad-licking ex-governor piques your curiousity (and he's a much better guardian of the land than our current "president"), grant serious consideration to this book!
Five stars for creating an extremely improbable story and making it seem as natural as a tale about the Springfield 'burbs! Five stars for fun. A truly amusing diversion.

About the Author
Deborah Bedford began writing when she was ten years old after she finished reading Louisa May Alcott's novel, Little Women. She promptly took pen in hand, found shade beneath the old mimosa tree in the front yard and, because the story would not let her alone, began turning Little Women into a play. That began the long and frustrating process of getting into trouble in school for scribbling stories in spiral notebooks instead of listening in class. Now Deborah's novels have been published in twenty different countries and in over a dozen different languages. Her books have garnered numerous awards and have appeared on the USA Today bestseller list, the CBA bestseller list, and chosen as a Doubleday Book of the Month Alternate Selection. Deborah is president and co-founder, along with Tim Sandlin, of the prestigious Jackson Hole Writers Conference, which brings writers the likes of Sue Grafton, Susan Isaacs, Wally Lamb, Billie Letts, John Nichols, Anne Lamott, Tab Murphy, Olivia Goldsmith, William Broyles and Tony Hillerman to teach in Wyoming as well as to barbecue on the deck at Snow King resort and to climb mountains. Until now, Deborah has built her career writing mass-market fiction. A Rose By The Door marks her first novel-length venture into inspirational fiction, something that feels to her like gloriously falling forward and wondrously coming home, all at the same time. She already felt impelled to write this story. But then she met Jamie Raab, publisher at Warner, and the rest, as everyone says, felt like stars moving into place. Deborah and her husband, Jack, have two children, Jeff, 16, and Avery, 12. When she isn't writing, she spends her time fly-fishing, cheering at Babe Ruth baseball games, singing praise songs while she walks along the banks of Flat Creek, and taking her dachshund Annie for low-slung hikes in the Tetons where they live.

A good book
By lor369
This book is about Tess, the wayward daughter who shows up at her parents pregnant. Nora does not seem to be at all

accepting towards her daughter. Tess takes off after having her baby, leaving her (Tansy) for her parents to raise. It

turns out that Nora doesn't disapprove of her daughter. She is suffering from her own trauma of having an abortion many

years ago.

I thought this was a very good book overall. I loved the reconciliation theme towards the end with Tess, and admire Tess for her decision to chose life for her unborn baby. I liked the character of Ben and how he seemed to be there for Tess.

At times, some of the dialog seemed a little stilted. The only other thing that I didn't like was that nobody seemed to like

Tess. Nora didn't seem to like Tess, Creede was annoyed with Tess, Creede's father was disapproving of Tess, and the church

ladies were disapproving of Tess. Yeah, Ben stood up for her, but it seemed that everyone was too hard on her. It would

have been nice to see someone reaching out to Tess, to help her go in the right direction but in a loving manner.

The book also mentioned something about Nora discovering the truth about herself and her abortion. I didn't really seem to

grasp what that truth was. Was it guilt? Was she disapproving of Tess because of the guilt over her own abortion? This

part seemed rushed towards the end.

Bedford interwove her own abortion experience into the book, so she knows what a woman who has had an abortion goes through.

Overall, I enjoyed the book.

One of Bedford's best yet...
By Debraney
...and that's saying a lot! What a compelling, beautifully written story! If Deborah Bedford's storyline hadn't grabbed me by the throat, her writing style would have. Some of the breathtaking images she paints with words, simply beg to be put on film. And the intricate relationships between her characters are so true-to-life and touching, you won't be able to put this book down. It made me want to buy everything she's ever written.

God redeems us when we come to him.

An excellent book about how the choice s we make in our youth affects our adult life. Nora was hiding sin and Ben was judging her. Poor Tess was caught in the middle and making bad choices while searching for acceptance. Thank God for his redeeming power.

Amazon.com Review
After three decades of prodigious film work (and some unfortunate tabloid adventures as well), it's easy to forget that Woody Allen began his career as one heck of a great comedy writer. Getting Even, a collection of his late '60s magazine pieces, offers a look into Allen's bag of shtick, back when it was new. From the supposed memoirs of Hitler's barber: "Then, in January of 1945, a plot by several generals to shave Hitler's moustache in his sleep failed when von Stauffenberg, in the darkness of Hitler's bedroom, shaved off one of the Führer's eyebrows instead..."

Even though the idea of writing jokes about old Adolf--or addled rabbis, or Maatjes herring--isn't nearly as fresh as it used to be, Getting Even still delivers plenty of laughs. At his best, Woody can achieve a level of transcendent craziness that no other writer can match. If you're looking for a book to dip into at random, or a gift for someone who's seen Sleeper 13 times, Getting Even is a dead lock.

Allen's Raw material
By R. J. Marsella
Reading this is like participating in Allen's creative process since many of the short sketches here are reminiscent of scenes from Allen's earlier films. Very funny stuff that had me laughing out loud. However it's best to read this and imagine Woody Allen's voice is telling the stories, it makes them even funnier. Not all of the sketches work as well as others but when he's on the sketches are hysterical. A very short collection of Woody Allen shorts.

A Classic with HILARIOUS Woody Allen Essays
By Thor Vader
Getting Even is brilliant. It is a short book collection of 17 of the funniest essays that Woody Allen has ever written. I found myself laughing out loud all over the place, and actually finished this book in two brief settings. I generally like to read 1-2 essays a day, but with each one, I wanted more.
Death Knocks is one of the essays in this book that really got me going. It was so damn funny. It felt like a funny version of Ingmar Bergman's Seventh Seal... where the person meant to die will not allow Death to take him. I loved it. A Look at Organized Crime was another absolutely hilarious essay written as you can imagine.
Finally The Gossage-Vardebedian Papers has got to be one of the funniest essays ever penned. It is the exchange of letters between two chess players as they try to make sense of a game that they are having through the mail. I'm telling you, my gut was bursting.
This is a great place to get started when reading Woody Allen novels. There are no plays contained within as are in his book Without Feathers, but the essays are of a much higher caliber. I know you are going to love this one. Happy reading!

Amazon.com Review
Some reporters have all the luck--especially plucky, ambitious, determined Texas TV news reporter Tiel McCoy, who walks into a convenience store on her long-postponed vacation and finds herself smack in the middle of the biggest story of her life. A couple of scared kids--an all-American boy and his very pregnant girlfriend, on the lam from her powerful, wealthy father who's determined to keep them apart--hold Tiel and a handful of other customers hostage. While Ronnie's brandishing the gun, Sabra goes into labor, and a mysterious, handsome stranger known as "Doc" takes over what soon turns into a life-threatening delivery. Only Tiel knows who Doc is: a brilliant, innovative physician who disappeared after a scandal involving the death of his wife. And only Tiel knows the identity of the gun-wielding boy and his girl, who are at the center of a manhunt the size of Texas. But there are some secrets she doesn't know, including the murderous reputation of two men trapped in the store with the rest of the hostages. As the drama unfolds, it becomes apparent that the kids would rather die than surrender, and the police, the FBI, and Sabra's father will precipitate a volatile end to the standoff.

Brown is a skillful writer, able to sustain suspense while fleshing out her characters. She saves the obligatory sex scene for the very end, but makes it worth waiting for. Tiel McCoy is an engaging heroine, and Brown fans will look forward to her return in another adventure after she wins the coveted promotion this dramatic exclusive will no doubt earn her.

From Publishers Weekly
Workaholic Dallas TV reporter Tiel McCoy thought she would take a well-earned vacation, but while driving to a secluded condo in New Mexico, she hears a radio report that changes her plans. Teenager Sabra Dendy, only daughter of Fort Worth multimillionaire Russ Dendy, has been kidnapped. Soon Tiel learns that Sabra, who's pregnant, has run away with her boyfriend, Ronnie Davison. Smelling a story, Tiel heads for the remote town of Hera to interview Ronnie's father, thinking the couple might go there for help. But when she stops at a convenience store for directions, Tiel encounters Ronnie and Sabra bungling a hold-up attempt. As Sabra goes into labor, Ronnie takes everyone in the store hostage, and Tiel and a handsome cowboy who seems to know a lot about medicine deliver Sabra's daughter. Tiel learns that the desperate young couple are fleeing to Mexico to escape Sabra's dictatorial father, who has vowed to separate them and put their baby up for adoption. He has even threatened to kill the child, and Sabra and Ronnie have vowed to commit suicide if they are thwarted. Bestselling author Brown (The Alibi) sets up believable conflicts (Ronnie once killed a puppy, rather than return it to an abusive owner). If the dialogue and sex scenes occasionally seem stilted, this popular author's tale still hits hard and keeps moving briskly to its satisfying conclusion.

From Library Journal
Hardworking TV reporter Tiel McCoy is on her way to a much-needed vacation when she hears that Ronnie Davison has allegedly kidnapped Sabra Dendy, Texas millionaire Russell Dendy's teenage daughter. Tiel immediately contacts her editor and happily accepts an assignment to follow up the story, hoping it will help her get the promotion she desires. When none other than Ronnie and Sabra, who is actually his very pregnant girlfriend, hold up the convenience store where Tiel stops, she and the other customers become hostages in an unusual and emotional standoff. The two teenagers are fleeing Sabra's ruthless father, who has threatened to separate the lovers permanently and put their baby up for adoption, and they would rather die than live apart. Tiel will have the news story of her career--if she survives. At just over 200 pages, Standoff is much shorter than recent Brown novels and is also a departure for the author because most of the story takes place over several hours instead of spanning days, weeks, or months. A gripping tale featuring the characterizations, suspense, and sexual tension that Brown's readers expect, it is destined for best seller status. Highly recommended for public libraries.

Awesome!

It's a page turner. When I did have to walk away from this book it was in the back of my mind, what's going to happen next? Then the love story, aw! I felt the tug of feelings between the characters. I have been a fan of Sandra Brown for a few years. I've never been a big reader but I never want to put her books down. I would recommend any of her books to people who love mystery, a love story and anyone who loves a page turner. She puts fabulous twists in her book that make you want to continue to the end.

This book was a rid paced page turner!
By Marci Kimball
The characters were well portrayed! The plot was a tad weak, however, but I did enjoy the story! Seems strange, however, that after plotting a suicide pact if they couldn' t be together, the "kids" are satisfied to have Sabra & mom raise the child with "visitation" for dad!!! Hmmmm ! Weak!

Really good, but not my favorite.

I LOVE Sandra Brown's writing. I enjoyed the book but I like some of her others better. I don't want to say ANYTHING about it, because I hate when people blow the plot if I haven't read it yet. Mean Streak is one of my favorites and I'm looking forward to the new release!.

Good heavens-I've gotten myself into a scrape! Mere weeks ago, I was simply Jenny Penny, a lady's maid, a lord's illegitimate daughter, and a lover of fine frocks. But my credit at the shops of Bath has been cut off, and I am forced to sell my homemade facial cream at night, without my employers' knowledge. Who knew it would become the sensation of the ton? That society ladies would apply it to a most intimate part of their body? Or that rumor would spread that "tingle cream" was created by a highborn woman named Lady Eros?

If that were not enough, my mistresses-the matchmaking Featherton sisters-have made me their new project. By passing me off as Lady Genevieve, they mean to see me wed to Callum Campbell, Lord Argyll. I cannot fault their taste. His sable-dark eyes and his devastatingly wicked smile thrill me.

Now I am Lady Genevieve by day and Lady Eros by night. And I blush to think of what will happen when Callum and society discover that, in truth, I am neither.

From Publishers Weekly
In Caskie's far-fetched second Regency romance (after Rules of Engagement), Jenny Penny, illegitimate daughter of an unnamed baronet, and lady's maid to the two fluttering Featherton sisters, strives for a life above her station. While wintering in Bath with her employers, she spends her slim earnings on "earbobs" and muffs in the town's most exclusive shops. But she also reveals great skill as an amateur chemist, mixing up gallipots of peppermint face cream for her employers. The ton's most exclusive ladies soon discover that this "tingle cream" can be used elsewhere, and thanks to an underground servants' network, Jenny finds her discretionary revenue increasing along with her mysterious reputation as Lady Eros. Then Lord Argyll, a lusty Scottish baron, discovers Jenny one day as she's modeling a dress for the Feathertons. The two ladies immediately seize upon a plan to match Jenny to the Scottish baron, to whom she's introduced as Lady Genevieve. Days ironing, evenings at balls and nights filling gallipots soon bring Jenny to the end of her rope. How will Lady Eros, Lady Genevieve and plain old Jenny Penny finally reunite for one happy ending? Those willing to completely disregard rigid English rules about social class will delight in the fairy tale answer to this question.

From Booklist
Lady's maid Jenny Penny dreamed of one day being a lady. Now it seems her dream is coming true. When Jenny is caught trying out a lovely coach by its owner, Callum Campbell, Viscount Argyll, Jenny pretends to be "Lady Genevieve" in order to escape. Much to her surprise, when Jenny encounters Callum again, her employers, Viola and Letitia Featherton, encourage her to continue her masquerade. Although the idea of dressing up and playing lady with a wickedly gorgeous Scotsman is very tempting, Jenny really doesn't have time to spare because her homemade peppermint facial cream has suddenly become quite popular (for use in an unintended manner) with Bath's finest. As Jenny struggles to meet the ever-increasing demands for Lady Eros' "cream d'amour" without her employers finding out, she still tries to keep Callum from discovering that his new lady love is but a maid. A delightfully original heroine with a penchant for shopping beyond her means matches wits with a sinfully sexy hero in Caskie's latest sweet, frothy, and laughter-laced historical Regency. No Endearing Heroine Here
By M. Rondeau
Setting - Bath, England 1817 --- Working as a lady's maid for the Featherton sisters, Jenny Penny, the illegitimate daughter of an English baron had no idea that a `face cream' she'd concocted for her ladies would be used and gaining untold popularity as a `tingle' cream used in the lower extremities. This same cream was very much sought by the highborn ladies and gentlemen of the ton. Never did she ever realize that while modeling a gown for her employers she'd be mistaken for, and caught up into a scheme of impersonating a highborn lady. Jenny's life had certainly taking an odd turn, though after attracting the attention and admiration of the Scottish Viscount, Lord Callum Argyll, she was more than willing to continue the masquerade.

Naturally, playing the part of a lady required dressing like one and luckily the sale of her homemade facial cream, now the infamous "tingle" cream, was the means to an end in affording her passion of paying for her shopping sprees in Bath's most exclusive shops. With the ladies Featherton encouraging her romance with Lord Argyll, it seemed like a dream come true but, it would be only a matter of time before someone slipped and the truth be known - that Jenny Penny was only a `lady in waiting'!

*** While there were some humorous moments... I have to say, I did not like the characterization of the heroine at all. Told in her voice, the reader is exposed to only Jenny's views and motivations, which to me were so very shallow. She was admittedly a shop-aholic, who spent far more than she could ever have earned as a maid, had she not chanced upon her face cream a.k.a. an erotic enhancer. If her employers had been aware of her overdue accounts, she'd have probably been sacked! As a heroine she just was too materialistic, and it was just so hard to warm up to her at all. Additionally, I found very little depth to Callum as well and he came across as rather flat and lifeless, although in the end he finally did redeem himself.

The author does get points for research though and coming up with good historic detail. Unfortunately, the twin Featherton sisters, who were such a total hoot in RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, just didn't draw the laughs I expected and I felt just a tad cheated because of that. --- Marilyn, for [...] ---

Not again!
By M. DETWILER
Kathryn Caskie won't get me again. I slogged through her first novel and really didn't like it, but, shame on me, I gave in and bought her second. To my horror, I thought it was even worse than her first. This heroine, Jenny Penny (lovely name), had no redeeming qualities. She reminded me of someone and, halfway through the book, I realized who it was. Elizabeth Bennett's harebrained, selfish sister, Lydia, in Pride and Prejudice. Like Lydia, Jenny thought of no one but herself. I have to say her shopping antics wore real thin, real fast. She could be in the midst of a crisis, but see some pretty in a shop and she had to have it. That is not an endearing trait in a heroine. I have to doubt her intelligence because she certainly seemed like she wasn't too blessed in the brains department. I also don't think she was very honest, witness her deception with Callum (and he's another story). She never really owned up to who she really was until she was forced to. I really, really didn't like this character. The dotty aunts were not as annoying as the last time around, but they were still too eager to go along with the deception. As for Callum, I question why he was there. We never really got to know him. I love to hear what's going on in the hero's head as he is falling in love with the heroine. I felt that Callum was trotted out when Caskie needed a stud and then trotted back to his stable, wherever that was. How he could put up with Jenny Penny, I'll never know. Probably because we were never given the opportunity to get his POV. If I sound upset, I am. I agree with the other reviewer who thought Caskie was writing down to romance readers. I get the feeling that she is. If she wants to write some other genre, then go do that. You are doing readers a disservice by publishing books of this ilk. Let the historical romance category to the pros like Lisa Kleypas, Karen Marie Moning, Sabrina Jeffries, and Pamela Britton. Caskie won't get me again!!

I guess I'm still Waiting...
By C. Vowels
My sister made me buy this book because the heroine's name is her nickname. I bought and read at her insistence.

Jenny Penny is a lady's maid with a weakness for the finer things in life. When the niece of her employers dresses her up like a lady and drags her before the highlander who stole her breath earlier in the day, Jenny finds herself playing the part of a lady to Callum, Viscount Argyll. Moonlighting as Lady Eros, selling her wildly popular face cream (for which people have found a different use), Jenny's life soon gets wild and crazy.

I don't really know where to begin with my review. This book is written like a chick lit novel, which makes it difficult to review in the style I normally use for a historical romance. Jenny is the center of the story, the entire book being told from her point of view. This might have worked if she'd been a better character. She's what would happen if the Shopaholic and Becky Sharp mated--and not in a good way. She's got all of the surface angst of a real character, but in execution she's shallow and lacks self awareness. There's just no depth to her at all.

I don't feel like I know the hero. In fact, I'm not even sure what he looks like. You can be sure I have no idea why he falls in love with Jenny. The endearing parts of her story and character are only revealed to the readers, not to the hero. Actually, I'm not all that sure why Jenny loves Callum either. The romance, like Jenny, lacks depth.

"Lady in Waiting" just feels like a silly story, and it only gets two stars from me. The characters aren't three dimensional, Jenny's predicaments and shopping addictions are wallpaper, and the hero is a non-entity. This book reminds me of the work of other authors, but falls short because the characters aren't good. I'll try to explain what I mean: Julia Quinn's light-hearted stories work because her characters have soul; you root for Pamela Britton's working class heroines because they feel real, flaws and all; Karen Marie Moning's rompy tales are never a joke because her protagonists have chemistry dripping from every pore; Lisa Kleypas's flawless characterization makes you fall in love with everyone she writes.

I'd like to be clear, Caskie is a capable writer. Her prose has tightened since her debut and she has really trimmed down on the over-the-top gags. I'm glad to see that the horribly irritating match-making Featherton sisters have been reigned in and made more palatable. But in the end this is just a mediocre effort. I have the oddest feeling that the author doesn't have a real understanding of what makes good romance. I can be hard on the genre, but deep down I have deep affection for it. I think the same is true of the greatest romance authors. Somehow, I get the feeling Caskie has a lack of respect for the genre and its readers. If she'd rather be writing literary fiction or maybe even romance's more glamorous cousin, chick lit, that's what she should do.
