Still reeling from her father's death and her last case, which landed her partner, Abe, in the hospital, Mia's not pleased to be teaming up with someone new—especially with Abe's assailant still on the loose. Reed has his doubts as well, suspecting that Mia isn't ready to be back on assignment. As the investigation proceeds and the two divulge their troubled pasts, they find themselves warming to each other—just in time for Mia to become the next target for the flame-happy madman. Rose's characters aren't exactly fresh—she's the tough-but-vulnerable cop's daughter, he's the gruff-but-lovable heavy—but Rose gives them plenty of room to develop as the tense procedural escalates. Emotional subplots, engaging secondary characters and a string of red herrings will keep readers hooked. (Feb.)

Creepy, horrifying villain, great suspense and nice romance

4.5 Stars! Another great book in the Romantic Suspense Series. This book started off a little slow for me and I didn't really connect with the relationship between Reed and Mia although I liked both characters. The villain in this book was once again creepy and terrifying and utterly believable. Nobody writes villains better than Karen Rose. I think the suspense is stronger than the romance in this one and it isn't until more than 70% of the way through the book before Reed really "wakes up" and starts to let go of his past. Both Mia and Reed are strong, likable characters although Reed annoyed me occasionally. They both have a lot of past issues to deal with and so this romance is a very slow burn. I loved the suspense part of this book and couldn't put it down. It also packed much more of an emotional punch then I thought it would and from unusual places. The poem Reed's daughter wrote made me cry and the little boy in this story was just heartbreaking. I cried and then I laughed and I walked away feeling good and wishing it wasn't over and there isn't much more you can wish for from a book then that. I only took a 1/2 star off because it started slow for me and the romance really didn't happen until the end. This is a fabulous series and I'm looking forward to the next one!

Not my favorite author

Karen Rose has WAY TOO MANY characters in her stories. I like to keep up with each and every character (writing notes on them on paper). Many of the characters are mentioned only once and have nothing to do with the developing story and I end up with a list with many names that don't even matter. The sex part is more explicit than I care to read about, although it doesn't go on and on - but the buildup is there throughout.

I love her books and I am a collector, therefore I prefer them to have bookcovers and the one I ordered from you did not. I love the book but am disappointed that it didn't have the bookcover.
