Bestseller Kellerman's latest Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus novel (after 2002's Stone Kiss) will please her fans, but is unlikely to make new converts. When Cindy Decker, Peter's LAPD officer daughter (who had a big role in 2000's Stalker), finds an abandoned baby in a dumpster, she sets out to track down the developmentally disabled mother, suspecting that the child may have been the product of a rape. Her fellow officers discourage her efforts, while an attempt on her life sparks conflict with an alarmed Peter. Romance occupies Cindy, an observant Jew, as much as her professional career. Conveniently, the sexy and caring black pediatric nurse who cares for the baby turns out to be an observant Ethiopian Jew who is instantly smitten with her. Other coincidences abound, including Cindy's witnessing of a fatal hit-and-run that may be connected with the sexual assault she alone believes occurred. A minor subplot concerning the murder of stepmother Rina's grandmother in 1920s Munich simply peters out. Details of Jewish religious observance amount to superficial trappings. Cindy mentions dealing with an earlier trauma through therapy, but the author never lets the reader in on any of her sessions. The solution to the crime comes almost as an afterthought in this overlong book. Others, and Kellerman herself, have done a better job of melding a mystery plot with the challenges of maintaining Jewish identity in the modern world.

Because Kellerman doesn't reprise history in her latest Rina Lazarus and Peter Decker mystery, readers new to the long-running series may find themselves frustrated by the allusions. But Decker family fans will speed through this solid whodunit, which is not only an entertaining puzzler but also takes the characters' relationships to a new level. Cindy, a rookie cop and Peter's 28-year-old daughter by his first marriage, takes center stage here. Both her rocky history with the department and with her dad come to the fore as she digs into the case of a developmentally disabled teenager who abandoned her baby, insists she was raped, and may have witnessed a murder. Following the strangely coincidental hit-and-run of another disabled teen from the same area, the case blossoms into a mystery that requires help from Peter and from Cindy's new boyfriend, an Ethiopian-born Jew who finds willowy, red-haired Cindy to be the girl of his dreams. The romance and the dialogue are a tad overdone ("you and me both, hot stuff"), but series fans won't be too concerned. Stephanie Zvirin

Each Book Better Than The Last

I have followed this series since RITUAL BATH, the first novel which I found completely by accident because of its cover and intriguing title.
I have never been disappointed by one of these books. The series has a tight and complex story arc. It is not at all like the typical Mystery Series with repeating motifs, not predictable like Murder She Wrote, Perry Mason or Columbo. If that is what you're looking to read, you will probably be disappointed.
But like those series, this one does capture the attention and keep one thinking. That's why so many science fiction readers and writers like myself also devour mysteries -- they make you think.
But Faye Kellerman also makes you feel. Mystery reading is usually a cerebral exercise, but this series details the pressure-cooker life that so many police officers lead. This series makes you feel the heat.
The Jewish family lifestyle is not just incidental decoration in these novels. It is always, in every book, including STREET DREAMS, integral to the thematic substance of the novel even when it doesn't figure in the plot. Now in STREET DREAMS Peter Decker has taken a promotion and has become management. But his daughter is in uniform and in danger. The wisdom that he has gained through all these previous novels and from his religious studies lets him guide her through the mine field. We have watched this man mature, and now we see him passing on the tricks of the trade.
STREET DREAMS takes place in the aftermath of the traumas we've seen both Peter Decker and his daughter Cindy survive in previous novels. This whole novel, with all 3 mystery plots, is all about healing trauma during a time of peace.
The resolutions of the 3 mysteries are completely unpredictable if you follow only the plot. Some veteran mystery readers will have their expectations disappointed by the ending, but actually the resolutions carry the real message of this book if you follow the emotional story line instead of the plot.
"Time Heals" -- trauma can be overcome only with enough time and enough intervening events to provide a new perspective. If you look at events from a different perspective, the same facts lead to different conclusions, different feelings.
The ending of STREET DREAMS succeeds magnificently in portraying the riches available only in maturity. It is all about perspective.
Most enticing is the hint of what the next novel will be about. The family is growing, getting more diverse and more complex, and more engrossing.

Cindy Decker is interestingly dynamic

I read over several of the other reviewers comments and I agree with some and disagree with others.
Quite a few people remarked that they didn't like Cindy Decker, I actually like the character. I think she's interestingly dynamic, in that she can be quite tough when she needs to be yet vulnerable. Her relationships are interesting and entertaining, her father and Jewish stepmother, those conversations, those glimpses are good.
However, I agree with other reviewers who found the racial tensions to be forced and distracting. I feel this was a blantant attempt by Kellerman to make her heroine seem more noble and there isn't anything horrible about this, after all she is a heroine, but I want to be fooled, not punished. A white red-haired beautiful police officer falls in love with an black Ethiopian Jew. That in and of itself is not the problem. It's her constant barrage of racial tensions, the oversexed pairing of the couple, Decker's lengthy "race" speeches. It all lacked nobility. It was an honest ploy by Kellerman to elevate Decker.
Secondly, was the fact that Kellerman, who expects the reader to admire Decker, has her give her gun to her boyfriend, whom she's only known a few weeks in a potentially dangerous situation, then directs him to lie about it and THEN, the most unbelievable portion of it all, she takes that gun, rolls down her window and fires aimlessly so that she will had gun residue on her hand in case they check. I felt Decker had really been dissed! She is more intelligent than that, I felt she deserved better.
I disagree about several reviewers about the subplots being distracting, that's real police work, they have to run down every lead and it often branches out and the reality of police work is interviews, interviews, interviews. That part of the novel didn't bother me or distract me.
There you have the good and the bad, in my opinion.
