Zettel (Fool's War, etc.) has a gift for creating fascinating aliens with rich cultures and radically different, though still comprehensible, mindsets. She's somewhat less successful at portraying intergalactic politics, though in this novel she valiantly struggles--and almost succeeds--in generating a realistic future where a nearly omnipotent United Nations on Earth controls what happens to the colonies on Mars, the Moon and, especially, Venus. The Venus colony is the life's work of Dr. Helen Failia, who has done everything possible to make the base a self-sufficient outpost rather than a temporary research station. Just as Helen is about to lose funding for her beloved city, the surface of Venus sprouts what appears to be an alien artifact. Closely monitoring the humans' discovery of the artifact are aliens from another planet, who are looking to claim Venus as their new home. These aliens are in dire straits because their ancient, living cities are falling ill and dying. Their complicated belief system dictates that they cannot colonize Venus if humans have a legitimate claim to the planet, but if they judge the humans insane, they can destroy them like weeds. While Zettel's humans plod through the fairly pedestrian plotting, her aliens soar forward in unexpected and wonderful ways, making this a first-contact novel worth reading and relishing. (Feb.)

Zettel (Reclamation) endows both her human and alien characters with depth and variety, highlighting the concerns common to all sentient life. Strong elements of action and intrigue breathe life into a tale of social conflict and personal crisis. Recommended for most sf collections.

Wow! What a book.

I think my favorite thing about this book was the live cities. This was not only a science fiction book, it was a book about greed, love, hurt and betrayal. This was a book about honesty. About people finding themselves, about sacrifice. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends

The Butler Dood It

Dr. Veronica Hatch is the head of the Venus project team. It is her dream to turn Venus into a human colony. But people back on earth are losing their interest in the project. Finances are being pulled out. Veronica's dream is crumbling to dust. And then suddenly something comes up that makes interest in Venus flare up once again. An alien outpost is discovered.
Time passes and the story moves on and it is found out that the alien outpost is a fraud. Someone is interested in keeping the Venus project going either by hook or by crook. And then comes the twist. The outpost may be a fake but there are some real aliens around. Humanity is not the only race that is planning to colonize Venus.
So Veronica befriends these aliens and they live happily ever after. Oops! Sorry. No, that is not the case. What happens is that the aliens discover that the humans on earth are against their friends, the humans on Venus. The aliens, instigated by one of their number, who is motivated by power dreams, decide to destroy Earth. Earth is saved only by the supreme sacrifice of another of the aliens. Sandwiched somewhere between these events is a murder too.
What's wrong with the above scenario? Nothing much really, except for the fact that there is nothing extraordinarily right about it too. Plot is average. Characterization is week. The human characters lack dimensions and so do the aliens. In fact, the only thing alien about the aliens is probably their appearance. Other things like their psyche, their motivation, their power-hungry ways and their sacrifices seem all too human. The book can be read once if you do not have anything better to read.
And right at the end the reader discovers the real culprit that had put up the fake outpost on Venus. The butler dood it, of course. Just kidding.

Strong, with some faults

Roughly 200 years into the future, the world is dominated by the UN, which also has jursidiction over various space stations and colonies through the Solar System. Since the brutal suppression of a rebellion on Mars, the UN has been hostile to the interests of off-Earth colonists, a hosatility that is resented in many places, definitely including the scientific research station on Venus founded and led by Dr Helen Failia. As Failia desperately searches for funding the Venera station appears doomed, until a probe discovers what appears to be an alien structure on the surface.
On a distant planet, an advanced species calling itself The People occupy a world that is dying from ecological overload. They have found only one other planet which appears suitable for colonization, but are concerned by the fact that another species, originating in the same system and having already built a station on the planet, may have a prior claim. Ambassador T'sha feels that it is important to contact the new species and obtain their agreement before the People move to New Home; her rival D'sheun is certain that losing New Home will mean the death of his species and is willing to claim the new world by any means necessary.
Zettel switches back and forth between human and alian characters, leaving actual first contact for quite late in this first contact story. The contact is still eventful and misunderstandings, whether deliberate or accidental, bring the cultures close to catastrophe. The plot dawdles a bit in the early going, but builds up a good deal of steam before reaching a conclusion that is a bit abrupt and not altogether satisfactory.
The strength of this book is in the elaborate drawn alien culture, the strong characters (mostly female, which seems to be standard in Zettel's work), and the interesting parallels and contrasts between human and alien perspectives.
