One of the Best in the Series: A Splendid Story with Lots of Humor and Surprises

Even in a wonderful series like M.C. Beaton's books about Hamish Macbeth, there will be ups and downs. Fortunately for devoted readers, Death of a Witch is an unexpected up that keeps surprising, satisfying, and amusing to the last page. Unlike the weaker books in the series, Death of a Witch is filled with mysteries that are not easy to solve, complex and unexpected interactions among the characters, and every variety of reasonably clean humor you can have about sexual relations.

Be careful what reviews you read. It would be easy to stumble onto spoilers that could greatly reduce your joy in this marvelous story.

As the book opens, Hamish is returning from a trip to Spain that didn't turn out as he expected. Immediately, he learns that there's a newcomer to the village, Ms. Catriona Beldame, who wants to buy his car. As soon as Hamish cleans up a little mystery about who has been tipping off robbers as the location of stakeouts, Hamish has to see the woman for himself. The local women don't have anything good to say about her, and the men are strangely quiet even though they are reported to be visiting her. Dr. Brodie provides an unexpected clue as does a strange occurrence during Hamish's first visit. Before long, there are unsolved crimes that lead Hamish into a possible romance. Blair is so concerned that Hamish will solve the cases that he banishes Hamish. With Jimmy Anderson's help, Hamish is able to stay in the middle of the case.

The overriding theme of the book is the battle of the sexes, as portrayed through the theme of men wanting to have more frequent intimate relations than their wives and girl friends do. The consequences are very funny and keep providing new twists on a well-known theme. If you've ever enjoyed Hamish's problems with the opposite sex, you'll be especially pleased with this book which puts Hamish into many new pickles.

sexless in scotland

Hamish Macbeth, the simple but efficient constable of Lochdubh, returns from a Spanish vacation to his beloved village to find a surprise. There is a newcomer there, a pretty woman, being visited by a stream of men at all hours. What's going on in the quiet highlands town? Before that can be determined, she is murdered and her house set on fire.

Subsequently, three more murders lead Hamish to believe they were all related. Originally he believed the men were visiting the woman for sex. In a strange way they were, but not in the way he had thought. Meanwhile, Hamish's sex life becomes more complicated with his two time-honored girlfriends as well as a new forensics specialist who has her eyes on him.

The series, in which this is the 24th entry [or the 25th, depending on which publisher information is correct], still amuses and enchants. Written with the full flavor of the Scottish language and the vistas of the highlands, the novels continue to grow and entice readers. Hamish may seem to be a silly character, but he gets the job done, and is ultimately a serious and successful investigator. Recommended.

A Great Installment in a Great Series

Hamish is always interesting but this book is extra good and entertaining. Too often a series will get weaker, and certainly book 25 is well into the series, but M.C. Beaton has proved with this book that she has no intention of resting on her laurels.

Now I am waiting very impatiently for the next book in this series. It is certainly a strong writer who can continue a series for this many books and continue to do such a good job of new ideas, great old and new characters, and all the twists and turns that make a book hard to put down.

Light-hearted romance for a good read

The fatal day that everything fell apart, Meg Addams decided to leave Manhattan for the wholesome suburban, small-town lifestyle of Glenhaven Park where she grew up. She assumed that moving out of the big city wasn't going to be a problem for either her or her 15-year-old daughter Cosette. Well, other that re-adjusting their lives from the rhythms of the city that never sleeps, to those of small town living. However things Meg hadn't expected were making that transition a less-than-easy experience.

Glenhaven Park had changed in Meg's absence. Many of the inhabitants were wealthier than the blue-collared inhabitants Meg grew up with, and the main street has been invaded by upscale boutiques and posh eateries. On top of everything else, Meg had not expected her house to be truly haunted (although it had that reputation when she was a kid). She also did not expect her next-door neighbor to be her high school crush. Neither did she expect the fact that he was a hunk and that she still found herself attracted to him.

What follows is a wacky story of homecoming, romance and finding ones place in new but familiar surroundings. Meg and her daughter bump into each other (teen conflict combined with the added stresses of moving), their home has un-earthly co-inhabitant, and then there's their new neighbor, Sam and his two children. While Meg and Sam try and figure out their attraction to each other, Cosette and Ben (Sam's eldest), find themselves attracted to each other and in a fledgling relationship of their own.

Wendy Markham has written a contemporary romance that will please the older chick lit fan with a quick-paced and movingly funny plot. This book has a quirky and funny look at life as a single mom, dealing with major life changes, a teenage daughter who is testing her limits, a ghostly inhabitant who may or may approve of sharing a house with Meg and Cosette, and a growing attraction to her neighbor Sam.

fine fun family frolic

Meg Adams knows that she is yesterday's news when it comes to her acting career as the former Tony Award winner Aster Hudson is considered a has been at thirty-four. However, her hopes for a major juicy Broadway role take a back seat to when her fifteen years old daughter Cosette gets kicked out of school for carrying a gun in her backpack. She decides to take her offspring to her hometown of Glenhaven Park to live.

She buys the allegedly haunted Duckworth house, which is next door to single father of two her former high school crush Sam Rooney. Soccer coach Sam is concerned with his attraction to Meg and that his daughter is very fond of her; he fears he and his daughter will be hurt once Meg leaves for the bright city lights especially with an apparent resident ghost wanting her gone from the premises.

The kids make this second chance at love into an interesting tale as their issues are realistic bringing freshness to the up and down romantic relationship of the adults. Readers will enjoy Cosette's antics on and off the soccer field and feel for the angst of Sam's children. Meg already knows you can't go home and the WC Field's adage of not co-starring with children as they make LOVE, SUBURBAN STYLE into a fine fun family frolic.

Romantic comedy, Markham style

When Meg's daughter Cossette gets suspended for bringing a gun to school, which coincides with the struggling Broadway performer losing a role to another much younger actress, the Tony winner decides it might be time to return to her roots in upstate New York to provide a more wholesome upbringing for her Goth daughter. When she returns to her hometown, it's nearly unrecognizable, as the yuppies have swarmed in and brought up the property values. The only home she can afford is a haunted fixer upper next to the boyhood home of her high school crush, Sam Rooney. Unknown to her, widowed Sam lives in the home with his two children, working as a physics teacher at the local high school and coaching youth soccer. Both are immediately drawn to each other - particularly when things go bump in the night and Sam finds himself performing ghost buster duties. As a music and drama coach, she is tapped to help put on the high school production of "Sunset Boulevard," and has to deal with the fancy mom's who want their budding thespians to get the lead.

Markham is the alter ego of romantic suspense author Wendy Corsi Staub. Markham's latest romantic comedy has a little ghostly whimsy, similar in plot to her wonderful novel "Hello, It's Me." She creates realistic characters (both kids and adults), and manages to keep the momentum of the story progressing. I thought she missed the boat in keeping Cosette's absent father in the background, but I loved the characters, particularly how Meg could relate more to Meryl than her own daughter. It's a cute and quick read and one of Markham's most endearing.

Delbanco offers a richly textured portrait of a Jewish family with artistic and intellectual inclinations. The story encompasses several generations: Elsa, the proud and slightly eccentric matriarch; her sons Karl, who takes over the family business when his father dies, and Gustave, who is more interested in art; Karl's wife, Julia; and their little son, Jacob. This is the Almost Perfect Book

This book is exquisite. The story of a family of German Jews, from little Benjamin ("Mister Blister!") and his older brother Jacob (named after his mother Julia's first love, in itself a bittersweet subplot) to Julia, Gustave, Karl, and Grandmother Emma. Everyone has a chance to provide their own narration, and give us their own flashback, after adult Ben returns to present-day England to visit the frail Gustave for what may be the last time.
But "As I Lay Dying" this ain't - the characters provide more than filler dialogue for the same action, over and over, ad nauseum. Each chapter, each character's narrative, stands on its own as a separate story.
Emma provides, for me, the sweetest and saddest chapters in the book. As with all elderly in almost every society, Emma becomes prone to being overlooked, the walking, talking afterthought in the family; while once the matriarch of this strong family,she now finds herself little more than one of the curios that litter the cabinets. However, we find that she is still as young as her memories allow her to be, and longs for the chance to revisit her now-deceased husband in her mind, on the day they were engaged. In the background, all the while, Karl and Julia and the kids prepare for a voyage to America (it is 1948). Only Ben seems to have a capacity for empathy, which his mother's narrative further confirms.
Not since Salinger's Glass family have I found myself falling in love with a string of stories about a single family. Delbanco's ear for dialogue is magnificent, and his eye for detail is matched only by his sense of conservation thereof; many authors would spend the 200 pages this book spans alone on what color the birch leaves were, how the soot covered the characters' shoes as they walked about the garden after one of the blitzes, etc. Delbanco's understanding of when to turn it on and when to turn it off is nothing short of masterful.
My only gripe, and I feel sheepish bringing it up, is the fact that, in an effort to make the characters even more authentic, Delbanco feels compelled to fill the pages with German, French, and (on one occasion) Yiddish. No problem there; he explains contextually the meaning of each phrase or word. However, there are (sigh) misspellings throughout the German phrases that were really distracting to me; a pair of words misused the seemingly insignificant umlaut to the point that the meaning was humorously sent askew, and I'm sure it was unintentional.
Don't let this deter you from picking up this most solid book. You will fall in love with this family, and yearn to find more Delbanco.

A powerful ale

The rise of Hitler forced German Jewish brothers Karl and Gustave to relocate their family to London. After the war ended, Karl, at the urging of his spouse Julia moves across the ocean to America where they raise their two children, Benjamin and Jacob. Gustave chose to remain in London.
In 1964, Karl and his family fly to London on a family visit. Benjamin and Jacob recall life as children in London during World War II when Hitler and his air force sent bomb after bomb trying to devastate the English. Benjamin and Jacob also have memories of Germany, but they are through the eyes of their parents, grandparents, and Gustave. However, as second generation Americans they are beginning the assimilation process and though their grandmother wants to return to pre-Hitler Hamburg, Benjamin and Jacob know that Thomas Wolfe is right as they can never go home again.
WHAT REMAINS is a powerful look at national identity especially for those individuals displaced and forced to flee deadly events in their native homeland. The tale works as readers understand the different outlooks of the three generations. Nicholas Delbanco writes a tremendously deep, thought-provoking tale that relies on the characters to unfold their feelings and motives for their lifestyles. The use of flashbacks by the cast to reflect how each one sees the monumental events that shaped their destiny strengthens a book that will send the audience seeking the author's previous tales (see OLD SCORES and IN THE NAME OF MERCY).

Life Everlasting in Our Pasts.

Ezra Pound profounded: "What thou lovest well remains; the rest is dross." What remains is our beloved past. This story follows a Jewish family of immigrants (those who survived Hitler's concentration camps) to England. These cultured Greman natives had been privileged, with large ancestral homes. And yet, their "present" was composed of impoverished relatives, now face a dubious "future" liberated, but not really free.

In the literary club of which I was an energetic member, one of the best wasd a college teacher whose family had to flee Castro's Cuba. She too had a privileged life in that beautiful country and they bled Communism, leaving behind most of their rich possessions and jewelry to find a form of freedom in the United States of America. How she and her family got to Tennessee is a long story. Their home in Cuba was taken over by a foreign embassy and she quipped, "I'm still teaching a foreign language." English was to her foreign.

Karl and Julia decide on America as the 'brave new world' in which to raise their sons, Ben and Jacob. Elsa yearns for her protected past of pre-Nazi Germany. It's about "that memory palace, the past." I too returned to my hometown after forty years farther South (and yet, some folks here ask me if I'd been up North! I explain I was still in Tennessee, only near the Alabama border) to reclaim my good memories of growing up here in the Fifties. They were dashed by unfeeling natives and the Tennessee Theater I'd looked on as a 'temple' now repulses me. Our past shapes us for immortality, but "what remains" when we are gone.

Nicholas Delbanco teaches English Literature at University of Michigan, Christine's Alma Mater. This is his 20th published book, quite a record, and this one lives up to his reputation of relating unforgettable characters. He can even get "quixotically erotic" -- is a teacher of writers, as is Zachary Adrian. His latest is called THE VAGABONDS.

Excellent overview of vaccines

This book was incredibly helpful in reading through the various vaccines. Even though it is about 10 years old now, the information is still timely for the most part. My husband and I don't have kids yet and haven't quite settled on which vaccines our kids will and won't get, but they will be few.

I thought Dr. Cave's explanations were concise and ordered, and easy to follow. I believe this is a book I can keep on my shelf as a reference, and I would readily lend it out to friends. If you are reading this review, then you are likely at least taking a second look at vaccines. Please read the book and do your research before letting your child one receive more shot. Also, do NOT default to your doctor. Hear what your Dr. has to say and get a second opinion on your own. There are too many doctors who have their hands tied by insurance and the CDC that they will not truly speak their mind about vaccines or even TELL you that you DO have the right to refuse vaccines for your child. If you let your child get shots, you MUST be informed.

Read this book to become informed.

We are a non vaccinating family, and plan to remain that way!

As a follow-up to my initial review, I'd still recommend this book if you are JUST starting to reconsider the current vaccination schedule. If you have already read a good bit and made some decisions, this book *might not* add very much and will not get into some of the deeper issues of why someone may choose another route. The book had value for me to get me started on the overwhelming subject of vaccines. For example, we do not vaccinate partially because I am not overly concerned about the illnesses my children could get that are otherwise vaccinated against. This book aided in teaching me about those illnesses and as a result, realizing the diseases/illnesses my children would be potentially exposed to are not death threats (read: I wouldn't want my children to get polio but it's extremely unlikely they would ever be exposed to it with where we live today (ie not Africa); diphtheria used to be a deadly disease (about 20% death rate) but with today's sanitation, it is non existent per the CDC. Etc etc.).

On the other hand, another facet to our decision dealt with the idea of the benefit of childhood illnesses and exercising the immune system before adulthood to be more resilient IN adulthood, and leaving the body as God designed it. That, of course, is a personal perspective on health so I wouldn't expect that to come out in an informational book. I'd say the opinions are on the fence more than a book totally for or totally against vaccines - which is good. You need some matter-of-fact information and you as a parent need to discern the right choice for your family. If you're uneasy about vaccines as they are given today and want to start investigating the subject, reading this book is a great place to start.

Balanced, Well Researched, Facts Based Information

After my infant daughter had an immediate physical reaction and a prolonged, 4-week neurological reaction to her routine 4-month vaccinations, I began searching for information about vaccines and safety that would help me determine the best, safest course of action with future vaccines. Searching the internet yielded an enormous amount of information - some of which is very alarmist and frightening and some of which is overly scientific and hard for a non-scientific parent to understand. It is very difficult to find information that is easy to understand, balanced presenting both the pros and the cons, and is comprehensive, facts-based and well-researched. This book is by far the most comprehensive and most useful information contained in a single cover that I have found. An added benefit is that the information is presented in such a way that it is a very compelling read - I read the 1st 100 pages within 3 hours after my amazon box arrived - while tending to a busy, crawling infant!
Who Can Benefit from this Book?
I believe that this book is a must read for all parents. Given that vaccinations are mandated by law it is very important for parents to understand as much as they can about vaccines. Parents have a responsibility to themselves, their children and our shared community to be informed on these matters. The subject of vaccines and their safety is much too complex for any pediatrician to adequately address with each individual parent that they serve. The most time I've spent with my pediatrician in a single visit is about 15-20 minutes max. The pros, cons, history of vaccines, past study findings, current research, etc., cannot be covered in such a short amount of time. As someone who is a proponent of vaccination programs and who believes strongly in doing what is best for the greater good in terms of public health, I found that the general statement from the medical staff at my pediatrician's office, that vaccines are safe and reactions are very rare, was not sufficient for me. I needed to know more, and thanks to this book now I do.
If you are a parent, even if your children have already been vaccinated, you will benefit from the knowledge gained by reading this book.

That the prolific Beaton seems to be writing for television in her 16th Hamish Macbeth mystery (after Death of an Addict) may be no surprise, given that the same U.K. company that brought Inspector Morse to the small screen has filmed some novels in this series. After all, what's superficial or formulaic on the page can look just fine on TV. When, in an effort to gain publicity for the local community and herself, bullying Strathbane Council member Freda Fleming gets drunken Lochdubh dustman Fergus Macleod promoted to "environmental officer," Fergus can't believe his luck. Alas, he doesn't have much time to strut his new military-style uniform ("He looked for all the world like the wizened dictator of some totalitarian regime"), because someone bashes the back of his head in and dumps his body in a rubbish bin. Enter policeman Hamish Macbeth, who soon discovers that Fergus had a second career as a blackmailer. As he pursues various suspects and red herrings, Hamish flirts with an old girlfriend, muses on the horrors of wife-beating, and generally carries on in a way that presumes readers are old friends who'll forgive him his every indulgence. A wildly improbable feat of Scottish hammer-throwing brings down the villain, while a second murder that's not what it seems provides some last-minute suspense. Adult/High School-When Mrs. Freda Fleming, tyrannical member of the Strathbane Council, appoints the dustman (trash collector) of Lochdubh to be the "environmental officer," Fergus Macleod becomes a bigger bully than he was before. He also specializes in blackmail as he uses the bits of information he finds in the rubbish against the local residents. No one is surprised when his body turns up in a recycling bin. That's when policeman Hamish Macbeth steps in to investigate, but he has a difficult time trying to get the locals to talk. And then, another murder complicates the entire process. Beaton once again entertains fans of the series with delightful escapades of the Scottish populace and a good mystery. She uses Hamish not only as the main character, but also as a foundation for learning about the culture, activities, and other people in the village. Clarry Graham, Macbeth's constable who specializes in cooking, lends additional humor to the story line. Another entertaining offering from this successful author.

Have three hours to kill...this is your book!

Having just read a heart-thumping page-turning thriller, I felt the need to read something that would bring my blood pressure back to its normal rate. "Death of a Dustman," the most recent installment in M. C. Beaton's series about Hamish Macbeth, a police officer in a small village in the Scottish Highlands, was the perfect choice.
This book has just the right mix of suspects, clues, romance and local color to keep you interested while not taxing your heart. Don't expect deep character analyses, complicated plots or dastardly villians. The darkest thing about this book is probably the weather.
I have to give the book 5 stars because it delivered exactly what I expected...about three hours of non-stressful pure reading enjoyment.
This is the perfect book to tuck into your beach bag or carry on luggage.

DEATH OF A DUSTMAN WILL GATHER NO DUST!!!

You won't be able to put the book down is the reason it will gather no dust. I really enjoyed this one. I have read them all up to now and am looking forward to the next one. Hamish is quite a character. He is trying to find out who killed the dustman and another murder takes place. Did the same person do both??? Hamish wades through the various people of his village asking questions and putting his thoughts together. He has a new assistant in this one but will he keep him and is the assistant someone who could have committed the murders? His true love Priscilla is around and pretty as ever. Of course Inspector Blair is always causing trouble for Hamish. A good book, you can feel like you are there. You can see the village in your mind and if you are like me, wish it were possible to live in a place like this.

I must admit to being rather addicted to the "cozy mystery" genre. They are a source of relaxation for me. These, the Hamish Macbeth series by M.C. Beaton, are some of my favorites. As other reviewers have pointed out, each of the twenty or more books are much the same. Same plot, same characters, same locations, etc. etc. That is okay though. I find this rather comforting. The various characters in Beaton's stories sort of become friends as you keep reading her books and this is always nice.

With this offering, Beaton again delivers her large cast of quirky (and some not so quirky)folks who live in N. Scotland. This time we have a rather nasty "wee man" who happens to be the village trash collector. Through circumstances not of his doing, the village dustman is given a great amount of power, and naturally becomes quite a hated man in the local area. Needless to say, he turns up dead in one of his own dust bins. There are two nicely done murders in this one and for our hero, Hamish MacBeth, a very long list of likely suspects, in this case, most of the village.

As with her other novels in this series, we are treated to a fimiliar cast of characters, some interesting twists, and a wee bit of dark humor thrown in for good measure. Hamish's love life remaina about the same..i.e. he is still clueless.

As with her other novels, I enjoy this authors discription of the country side, food and people. She is a very good story teller and this is just the sort of work you need to read to sort of wind down. I do recommend it highly.

Author James Redfield takes readers to the mountains of Tibet in search of the mythical place called Shambhala, otherwise known as Shangri-La. Redfield no longer such a superstar, but has staying power

The Celestine Prophecy was a great idea for a way to get spirituality across to the public: a synthesis of the most popular threads of 'New Age' thought that were circulating in the mid-1990s, packaged as a fast-paced action-adventure novel. The underlying metaphysics claimed to embrace all religions, yet also professed to be based on an empirical approach to life.
Sales show that a lot of the sensationalism which surrounded Celestine faded with Redfield's consecutive books. Some of this is just the nature of trends: anyone who has such monumental success with their first publication has little chance of producing a sequel that achieves the same results. On the other hand, there are some factors that could account for this decline in popularity.
In his second book, The Tenth Insight, Redfield compromised part of his original formula by introducing themes like reincarnation and animal omens--subjects that departed from the religious middle ground which initially let many people stay open to his theories. He also told his readers that human beings have abilities which are a good stretch further away from Pop Mysticism than communing with nature or perceiving auras. His third book, The Celestine Vision, was nonfiction, and discussed progressions in science and social thought that Redfield believes are precursors to a major revolution in global consciousness; it did well enough, but didn't come near to his early success.
With the release of The Secret of Shambhala, Redfield returned to the ongoing fictional storyline, continuing where The Tenth Insight left off. In this book, he posits that the energy generated by our thoughts and emotions actually goes out into the world as a force that he calls 'prayer,' and influences both outer events and the awareness of the people with whom we interact. I found his theories (which are embedded in the text as elaborate monologues followed by scenarios which illustrate them) to be as applicable to my own experiences as any other book in the series. The concepts were more advanced--and therefore, more challenging--than those in Celestine. This has probably contributed to its (relatively) low sales up to this point.

Best of the bunch

I really liked The Celestine Prophesy and The Tenth Insight (Redfield's previous books), but this third adventure is the best yet! Redfield may never be a Pulizer prize winner for his often confusing prose (especially in the first book), but his writing is improving rapidly and I was gripped by this adventure from the first chapter.
Redfield's strength is his ability to share spiritual truths within a story, making it much more palatable than boring prose. His main character is a pilgrim, learning these truths as he goes thru a colorful adventure, sort of a spiritual science fiction at times. I find his message resonates deeply within me... and I'd much rather read it in a story format.
I was reading this book during a life challenge and it helped me focus on the energy I could expand to resolve the situation. And it worked. I was reassured over and over, and while my adventure didn't take me thru the mountains of Tibet, it opened new doors of possibility.
Redfield has transcended the mundane once again, splintered barriers, and teaches us new ways to look at life....

A story with an agenda

By the author of the number one New York Times bestseller, The Celestine Prophecy, this book will appeal to a great many readers, I am quite sure. It is fiction, although many readers will see it as "based on fact." It rather depends upon the reader's own belief system, how they will view the book.

Redfield has used the book as a vehicle to expose his own philosophy, in much the same way as Ayn Rand used Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, but of course their philosophies are different. In fact, one could almost say that they are diametrically opposed to each other. Where Rand was a rationalist, Redfield is, well. . .

To best describe Redfield's premise, and the theme of the story, perhaps it would be best to describe the readers who will probably most enjoy the book: those who will exclaim over its probity and the integrity--nay, saintliness--of the author.

They will look you in the eye fiercely and argue against adding fluorides to water, genetic manipulation of, or adding "chemicals" to, food; or eating "dead" food. They will be vegetarians. They will be certain that large corporations are evil, and that "materialism" is the bane of human existence. They will be persuaded of the positive power of love, and convinced that anger, the lust for power over others, and violence are the ultimate destroyers of civilization.

These are the people who will most enjoy this book, because Redfield is a champion for all of those causes.

The secret of Shambhala (Shangri-La) is the "Power of Prayer." That becomes obvious at once. But, prayer is not simply wishing, or hoping, or idly asking God for a boon. It is a strong expectation. It is the belief that something good (or bad) will happen. This is the force by which we shape our world, with the help of angels, according to James Redfield's protagonist, whose name is never given. The book is written in the first person. He and his alter-ego, Wilson James-who suddenly appears in the story without explanation, with cryptic allusions to other adventures (and insights) of which the reader is assumed to be aware--go to Tibet because a teen-aged girl tells them they ought to, where the protagonist (and the reader) hope to discover their reason for going to Tibet.

In Tibet, their spiritual quest leads them into conflict with the all-powerful atheists of the Chinese government, who shamelessly apply force and violence and fan their paranoia, which, of course, weakens their spiritual strength. The government agents who dog their every move, seem to know more about their quest than they do, and yet they are supposedly motivated by the need to learn from our clueless friends their purpose and destination. It must have been tough for Chinese intelligence to explain their mission to the comptroller and get funding for the project!

In all candor, the book held me to the end. I read it in one sitting. (Although there are 238 pages, the type is large and well spaced out, so it reads quickly (particularly if you skip over the sermons lightly.) The plot is airy-fairy, and the conflict is too improbable to engage your critical intelligence. Yet, read it I did. As in all good fiction, there is enough of a germ of truth in the underlying premise it to make it, if not plausible, at least entertaining. Do I recommend it? Sure!

Like Jackie O, Oona O'Neill (1925-91) captured public attention for two reasons: her impressive familial/marital alliances (she was the sole daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill and the last wife of filmmaker Charlie Chaplin) and her elegant, raven-haired beauty. The two women also shared vitas that were filled with childhood disappointments, humiliating public attention during crises, and the wrenching deaths of loved ones. But as Jane Scovell's new biography clearly shows, Oona O'Neill Chaplin lacked both the stoicism and personal passion of Jackie Onassis. Hers was a spirit too tender--and fundamentally fragile--to assert itself fully or survive independently for any period of time. Hence the book's apt subtitle, "Living in the Shadows."

With information culled from press clips, interviews with Chaplin's friends and contemporaries, and previous biographies of Eugene O'Neill, Scovell's book paints an engaging portrait of a privileged, potentially fabulous life gone way wrong. Most fittingly for their subsequent tortured relationship, Oona's parents--Eugene O'Neill and writer Agnes Boulton--met in a Greenwich Village bar dubbed the Hellhole. Eight years into their marriage, in which they flitted between Greenwich Village, Bermuda, Provincetown, Maine, and New Jersey, O'Neill abandoned the family life for the erstwhile actress Carlotta Monterey (christened Hazel Neilson Tharsing). Oona was two at the time. O'Neill, a boorish father, saw her only a handful of times before she turned 18; at that point, he disinherited her because he wasn't happy with the oozy publicity she was earning as a New York debutante. That same year, Oona moved out to Hollywood (in the hopes of pursuing an acting career), and met and married Charlie Chaplin, who was facing a scandalous paternity suit at that moment. Chaplin was 54, Oona was 18. She never worked again, and he was at the end of his career. They had eight children (the last when Chaplin was 72), and she stood by him till his death in 1977, spending most of their years together exiled in Sweden, where Chaplin had gone to avoid a host of problems with the U.S. government. After Chaplin's death, Oona returned to the U.S., where she lived 14 depressed, alcoholic years before dying at age 66 of cancer.

There's a breezy, slightly superficial tone to this book, despite Scovell's attempt to elucidate fully the potholes and vistas of Oona's dramatic roadmap. None of Oona's eight children, or close family members, seems to have talked to Scovell, nor did Scovell have any significant access to Oona's correspondence or other writing. According to Scovell, who has collaborated on autobiographies with Elizabeth Taylor, Kitty Dukakis and Maureen Stapleton, Oona found in Chaplin a father surrogate, but also a genuine love match. And Chaplin found in Oona a steady, evenhanded companion who idolized him, and a caretaker for his dotage. Scovell paints a scathing picture of O'Neill pere as an aloof, mean-spirited parent who dumped Oona's eccentric, alcoholic mother, Agnes Boulton, in 1927 to marry actress Carlotta Monterey. It was Oona's mutually supportive union with Chaplin, Scovell contends, that saved her from the inner demons that led to the suicides of her drug-addicted brother, Shane, and her half-brother, Yale classicist Eugene O'Neill Jr. Oona and Chaplin moved to Switzerland in 1953 after Hollywood blacklisted the comic for leftist leanings; they had eight children, who gave Oona mixed, yet, on the whole, favorable reviews as a mother. After Chaplin's death in 1977, Oona, overwhelmed by grief and despair, descended into alcoholic dissolution; she died of cancer in 1991. As Scovell makes clear in this touching, bittersweet biography, Oona's tragedy was that she went directly from the specter of her awful father to Chaplin: "She never stood on her own."

A glowingportrait of a woman who defined grace and dignity

Abandoned by her father, Eugene O'Neill, Oona transformed this hurt into love and care for her much older husband, Charlie Chaplin. This book details her life, and gives us great insight into what family, fame,love and loyalty mean in this century. While not known for any traditional arts, such as acting or writing (though, it is clear from this biography that she may have been successful in either form), Oona's art was her life itself; her ability to deal with a father who rejected her, a sibling she looked up to but could not help, and a husband to whom she devoted herself to as he lived out his life in a time when the world was rapidly changing.
The writing is clear and without pretension. Ms. Scovell realizes that Oona was a complex person and conveys that to the reader. Throughout the book, the nature of Oona O'Neill Chaplin is always apparent --- a tribute to a well-researched biography.

Skipping across the surface of a life

As one begins this book, which starts with fairly lengthy backgrounds on the O'Neill and Boulton families, it seems that one is on the way to learning as much about Oona O'Neill Chaplin as her forebears. This is not the case. I came away knowing her life only superficially. More detail is devoted to Eugene O'Neill and Charles Chaplin (both written about exhaustively elsewhere), but who was Oona?

All I derived from this term-paper-like bio were the surface details of Oona's life: she had a chaotic childhood, she went to good schools, she evolved into a Cafe Society glamour queen by her mid-teens. She decided to become a movie star and moved to LA. She made a very poor screen test before being introduced to Charlie Chaplin. Mr. Chaplin, at 54, was taken by the lush 17-year-old. They married shortly thereafter, just as she turned 18. Eight children, an exile from the U.S. and millions of dollars and accolades later, Chaplin died. Oona, who apparently had already begun drinking, became a confirmed alcoholic and, eventually, a recluse. She died in her mid-60's of pancreatic cancer. This much can as easily be learned on Wikipedia or via Google.
