Philadelphia homicide detective Vito Ciccotelli calls upon the expertise of archaeologist Sophie Johansen to track a sadistic sociopath who uses medieval torture devices to make his kills. When Vito and Sophie come face-to-face, it's lust-at-first-pheromone, and as the sexual tension builds, so does the suspense. Gilbert is appropriately matter-of-fact when examining the dynamics of the video game industry and when offering graphic descriptions of disemboweling, a chair of nails, and the inquisitor's rack. She's less controlled in dialogue sequences involving more than two characters, but she's terrific with children's voices, and the love scenes fairly sizzle. Not my favorite author!

Karen Rose has WAY TOO MANY characters in her stories. I like to keep up with each and every character (writing notes on them on paper). Many of the characters are mentioned only once and have nothing to do with the developing story and I end up with a list with many names that don't even matter. The sex part is more explicit than I care to read about, although it doesn't go on and on - but the buildup is there throughout.

Absolutely Chilling!

Another chilling read by Karen Rose. Seriously mental psycho. I'm always fascinated to watch Rose weave the different characters & plot lines together by the end...and suddenly, it all makes sense. I suspected the identity of the villain a little earlier in this one than some of the others, but it didn't distract from the suspense, horror, or ending at all. A Must Read!

First in the series, I loved this book and did not want to set it down. You could see where other characters were being set up for their stories, but that did not bother me in the least. Actually, it made me all the more voracious wondering how she would continue to build and beat this wonderful first book.

Any thriller writer, wannabe or actual, would do well to study Patterson's 10th Alex Cross novel. A sequel to last year's The Big Bad Wolf, the book is a model of economy, delivering a full package of suspense, emotion and characterization in a minimum number of words. The story brings back not only Big Bad Wolf's arch-villain, the Russian mobster known as the Wolf, but also an earlier Patterson bad guy, the Weasel, recruited by the Wolf to further his plans. These involve extorting Western powers for billions of dollars to avoid major terrorist attacks on New York, London, Washington and Frankfurt—attacks the Wolf offers a preview of by wiping out a town in Nevada by aerial bombardment after hustling its citizens to safety, then by doing the same to a village in England without evacuating the populace. The novel features numerous exciting scenes, most notably one in which Cross is kidnapped, then shackled to a suitcase atomic bomb. It's not the steady tension, the numerous colorful locales, the reliable action climaxes nor the novel's effective doomsday gloss that makes this thriller work so well, though. It is, of course, the characters, and in Cross, Patterson continues to elaborate his finest hero, cerebral yet emotional, dedicated yet flawed, caught between duty and family. Regrettably, the novel is marred in its final chapters by a series of surprises that skirt playing unfair with the reader, but most Patterson fans probably won't mind and they are legion enough to send this to the top of the charts, for good reason.

Bad villains return, but weak terrorist plot not much fun

This is the tenth in Patterson's Detective (now FBI special envoy) Alex Cross series, and from the outset, we would surmise that if you are not a faithful follower of the previous nine, you will be lost. First, both central villains are reprised from earlier books (the "Weasel" from "Pop Goes the Weasel"; and the "Wolf" from "Big Bad Wolf"), but it's not so clear how or why they are in cahoots. The Weasel in specific gets bumped off so unceremoniously that we almost wonder why he was even included in this novel. Second, and worse, the brief scenes featuring Alex's little boy and his mother Christine, Alex's current squeeze Jamilla, and his ex-partner Sampson, etc. etc., were so sketchy that the uninformed reader might think these segments irrelevant filler.

Couple that with an incredulous plot wherein the Wolf is leading the presidents of four countries around by their noses, almost a trite post-9/11 recital of terror with Al Queda thrown in every few chapters just for effect; it soon becomes clear this is not one of Patterson's better efforts. The storyline is as usual reeled out in short, three-page chapters, with action galore. But we are given so little meat, so little background, so little motivation to care, that the race toward the end of the book was almost anticlimactic. An overdose of red herrings and gratuitous slayings did little to endear the plot to us either.

While we generally enjoy Patterson's fast-paced thrillers, this one looks too much like a bad screenplay - you know the feeling: it's not that it's horrible, but you wonder later why you spent so much money for so little real entertainment. He can do much better, and so can you.

Tepid & Unsatisfying

If you look back through James Patterson's celebrated Alex Cross series, you'll find some of the finest thrillers written in the past decade. Along Came a Spider, Kiss the Girls, Pop Goes The Weasel, and Roses are Red are all prime examples of a talented writer at the height of his career. Unfortunately, Roses are Red was the last entry in this series that truly captured the essence of the Alex Cross character, and everything that's come after has been mediocre at best, with London Bridges being no exception.

The story picks up right where The Big Bad Wolf left off. Cross is working for the FBI tracking the Wolf, the most ruthless predator he's dealt with in his long career. To complicate matters, the Wolf has joined forces with the Weasel, a villian from previous Cross novel Pop Goes the Weasel. After blowing a small Nevada town off the map, the duo holds four major cities hostage, demanding a multi-billion dollar ransom. Naturally, it's up to good old Alex Cross and his team of FBI agents to put a stop to their diabolical scheme.

When the series started, Alex Cross tracked serial killers, expertly piecing together clues to solve crimes that baffled other detectives. Seemingly overnight, he seems to have switched his focus to combating world espionage. It's not that the writing itself is bad, the problem lies in the fact that the plot is so contrived and unrealistic, readers can't help but think "yeah, right". And isn't it interesting that with each new novel, Patterson describes the villian as Cross' most formitable foe??? Formitable or not, the Weasel served absolutely no purpose here. His role in the story seemed like nothing more than a cheap way to win back fans who have long since abandoned this lukewarm series.

No matter what reviews say, Patterson fans will devour this new novel in one or two sittings hoping for some kind of improvement over his last dozen or so novels. Sadly, they won't find any improvement here. Only a mediocre thriller that makes them long for the days when Patterson's books were fantastic.

This is by far the weakest of the Alex Cross series. Several things:

1) How does the Wolf go from a sadistic, homocidal, slave-trading maniac to an international, celibate, terrorist?

2) This maniac was blowing up bridges in major cities. He killed about 1,000 people in Paris. The book doesn't even get into the implications of this, except to say that maybe "the French want him as bad, maybe more, than we do".

3) His family was missing for at least 5 days. Where were they? What happened? He doesn't even touch upon this.

4) The Wolf never addresses Cross killing The Weasel. Hell, Patterson barely touches upon it - it's almost a footnote. What the...?.

Of course, Patterson left it wide-open for a sequel... "The Wolf is dead... at least that's what I told myself over and over again until I believed it". Something like that. But I tell you, I could almost care nothing about a sequel. I'm guessing that "The Wolf" is really an organization of some kind, but, again, who cares at this point? Not me.

uncle john's : the next generation

Remember Uncle John's bathroom reader? That gift to those of us who enjoy a linger longer than a PEOPLE magazine article. Well, mixologist, amateur aesthetitician and pithy guy T.E. Krieger seems to have taken on the rather large task of telling us what we need to say at cocktail parties, the bulk of which are drab boring affairs where the goal is usually to see how long can one last, that or who one can leave with.
But actually what he seems to have done is to give a scattershot glance at enough disciplines to make even the least well-read out there passably informed on the basics (philosophy, art, literature, film...) and when mixed with an average intelligence and a little humility might actually add something to your run of the mill cocktail banter. That, or given us some good light reading for the john.
Think of it as NPR meets Howard Stern with a little too much Dennis Miller thrown in...

The "Cliffsnotes" of Cocktail conversation

Finally, the book I've been looking for, the "Cliffs Notes of cocktail conversation." This book is perfect for people like me, who sometimes feel lost when conversations turn to Politics, Architecture or -- heaven forbid -- Art.
T.E. Krieger put together this wonderful little book which includes juicy tidbits, and great one-liners that stylishly helps you change a boring, "I have no idea what you're talking about" conversation into the fun, "Now that's what I'm talking about" conversation. I learned a ton from The Portable Pundit; it's fun, and the gems are easy to remember.... Perfect for us busy New Yorkers

Good refresher before a date

Covers lots of topics, from film to art to literature. Not too deep on any of them but enough so that you don't sound like an idiot when your date says she majored in art history at UCLA. I guess that is the point.
The book is worthwhile. Not an ivy league education in a paperback, but fills in those gaps where you need them. Of course, you can just always say, "looks like rain tomorrow" and sip in your drink quietly. Or get this and spend an afternoon brushing up.

Sandra Hill lives in the middle of chaos, surrounded by a husband, four sons, a live-in girlfriend, two grandchildren, a male German Shepherd the size of a horse, and five cats. Tall and Dark

Oh yeah! I've also love the Cajun storyline coming out of Louisiana. Sandra has a way with words and storytelling that make her novels funny, believable and warm all over. I find myself reading one novel of the series and following up with another. Very worthy read. . . with romantic drama, hot make up love and with a happy ending. All that the romance reader's can ask for. I will state this novel did not make me cry.

Party-on down, Cheri!!

Sandra Hill continually trods where no tepid writer dares and gives some wonderfully original books. I loved many of her Time-Travelling Vikings who refused to stay put in their own time, and her last - Very Virile Viking was one gem! It's hard to do humour and get consistent good reviews, because what strikes our funnybones is free-ranging and vastly different from person to person. Having been raised on both sides of the Pond, I see Yanks not get Brit humour and Brits sniff at what passes for American jokes.

I was raised in Scotland and Britain and I delight in the humour and their quirkiness. Same for the places I have lived in the US, mostly Kentucky - truly full of characters. But I have a great aunt down near the Big Easy, so New Orleans and the area holds a soft spot in my heart as well. Another place that truly appreciate humour and the offbeat. Believe me, I have a younger brother who thinks he is a Party-on-down-Cher, Cajun!

So, I was really looking forward to Hill's Tall, Dark and Cajun. And I must say, I hurt from laughing after reading this wonderful, charming and witty book!

Thoroughly Yankee Rachel Fortier wants romance in her life - and her jerks fiancé thinks keeping her buns and abs in perfect tone is romantic. The snooty decorator decides a change of pace is needed - and a change in men, and envisions dropping in on her gran's cabin in the bayou is a picturesque destination. Only her bottled water ways is about to come a cropper as she lands on grannie's bit of swampland. The log-cabin on stilts - al la Clampete decor - and is hardly what she had in mind. Neither were some of the other complications. There is a whole mess of cajun characters angling for the old ladies land, including the sexy, bedroom eyed, Remy LeDeux. Rachel's rapidly comes to the conclusion her stay is going to be a passel of trouble and rightly so, as Remy is about as spicy and hot as Cajun hot-sauce! what woman could resist that them Alpha-Male pheromones?

However, his mini-skirted great-aunt, is ready to marry him off, and beadily eyes Rachel as the perfect candidate, only in the love-never-runs-smooth catch, Rachel's shotgun totting Gran is ready to shoot Remy the instant he put foot on her front porch. Toss in an Alligator named Useless (must be a cousin to Crockett's Elvis!!) and you have all the fun mix to rival cajun gumbo!

Party on down, Cheri! It's one steamy hot time!! Way to go Ms. Hill. Don't wait too long to you take us back to bayou land!!

Very good book!

The characters were great in this book! All of them totally unique and not a boring one in the bunch! It's hard to decide who was my favorite!
Remy had been in a helicopter crash while fighting for his country, was severely burned, had 17 operations and was permanently scarred. After knowing each other for less than two weeks, Remy trusted Rachel enough to tell her his accident resulted in sterility. He'd never told anyone before and it was apparent this bothered him deeply and made him feel lacking as a man. Rachel's reaction is to break up with him because he hadn't "been honest" with her. What she should have done was be happy that he was able to share this with her and reassure him that it didn't matter if he couldn't father a child. Instead she validated his fears and made it look as if her real reason for leaving him was that he couldn't give her children. While I understand her need for honesty it was unrealistic of her to expect a person to blurt out something like this when they first met.
But irregardless, I really enjoyed this book. It was a great follow-up to "Love Potion" and I'm looking forward to Charmain's story!

Best book that I've read in a long time!!

One of the most well written books that I've read in a really long time. The story line flows the entire book. There isn't any part that seems like "filler" chapters, there isn't any part of the book that is slow. Overall an amazing story this if written phenomenally.
Gabe is a big, bad, alpha SEAL. He's one of the best. He is taken captive on his last mission. His wife Helen and daughter Mallory are told his missing, then declared dead. A year after he went missing and shortly after declared dead, Helen is finally coming to terms that her husband of only a few years is never coming back. It's time to suck it up and come tot he realization.
Until late one evening, Helen receives the phone call that will change her future. Gabe is alive. Her and Mallory go to the hospital with very conflicting emotions. Mallory now a teenager (Gabe's step-daughter) is excited and glad to have her dad back. Helen not so much. Before Gabe disappeared their marriage was...strained. As, Helen prepares to see her husband again she's told he doesn't remember the last few years...with her.
After coming home, things are different. Gabe is caring, compassionate, loving. He was never like that before. This confuses Helen because she was prepared to leave Gabe once his memory came back. After a few short weeks, Gabe's memory is back, and boy does it cause a storm.

Physician Whitaker (Reversing Heart Disease offers some sound advice that is, unfortunately, shrouded by specious assertions, such as his belief that diabetes is a reversible condition and not a chronic disease. He promotes a sensible low-fat, high-carbohydrate and high-fiber diet (recipes included) and an exercise program, but his claims that diet and exercise will help "hundreds of thousands, perhaps even millions, of diabetics in this country to become drug free" should be taken with more than a grain of salt. As he admits in the book, persons with Type 1 diabeteswhose diabetes emerged because of a lack of insulin in the body rather than the inability of the body to use it effectively"will almost always require insulin injections," although the amount may be reduced by following his regimen. He cautions readers to use this program under a doctor's care but repetitiously attacks his colleagues for their ignorance of nutrition and readiness to prescribe medications, and dredges up George Washington's unnecessary death by bleeding therapy at the hands of a doctor. He attributes eye damage to aggressive insulin treatment, which should also cause a stir in the medical community. Illustrations not seen by PW.

Insulin has been the treatment of choice for most diabetics since it was first administered to humans in the 1920s. Most physicians offer diet and exercise programs to their diabetic patients only as an afterthought, and the traditional diabetic diet, which restricts carbohydrates, may actually promote the disease in susceptible individuals. Dr. Whitaker, founder of the Whitaker Wellness Institute, outlines a low fat, low protein diet designed to increase sensitivity to insulin. Combined with regular exerise, it will reduce the need for therapeutic insulin or other diabetic drugs. Well referenced, the book includes recipes, daily menus, shopping lists, and nutrient charts and appears to be a sensible if uninspired dietary regimen. Changed my husbands life!

The author is a doctor, and provides an eye-opening perspective of how the medical profession traditionally treates Type 2 diabetics as well as providing a real alternative to that approach. I ordered this book right after my husband was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes - we were devastated - he was put on micronase and a blood pressure-lowering med. After reading this book, and Elizabeth Hiser's "Other Diabetes", we changed to a very high fiber diet, low in fat, and started a regular exercise program, he also started taking the nutritional supplements recommended - well, 8 months later, he's been officially discharged from the diabetes clinic! (He was off the meds after just one month.) PLEASE, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!
