From Booklist
Weiss is the psychiatrist whose best-seller, Many Lives, Many Masters (1988), chronicled the life (and past lives) of one of his patients. Since his breakthrough with Catherine, the hypnotized patient who was able to transmit messages from the beyond as well as recall former lifetimes, Weiss has continued his past-life therapies. Here he threads bits and pieces of what he has learned into the story of Elizabeth and Pedro, two patients who, unbeknownst to Weiss, have lost each other across lifetimes and now have another chance to reconnect. Although the stories of Elizabeth and Pedro form the book's centerpiece, they will probably be the least interesting, at least to the New Age audience, who has heard it all before. Weiss is better when he's explaining the philosophy that incorporates past lives into a therapeutic setting. This isn't the best book on the subject, but Many Lives, Many Masters sold more than a million copies, and Weiss' name, as well as an extensive marketing campaign, is likely to generate demand. Ilene Cooper

So glad I did
By Emily's Mom
I devoured this book in less than a day. A friend was given a copy as a gift and she mentioned it matter-of-factly to me in a conversation about something unrelated. I didn't get the impression she was interested in the subject matter, but it sparked my curiosity right away so I ordered it. So glad I did. I loved everything it said. I believe it. I ordered more of Dr. Weiss' books.

A Call to Conscience: The Landmark Speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by Clayborne Carson, Kris Shepard

This collection includes the text of Dr. King's best-known oration, "I Have a Dream, " his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize, and "Beyond Vietnam, " a compelling argument for ending the ongoing conflict. Each speech has an insightful introduction on the current relevance of Dr. King's words by such renowned defenders of civil rights as Rosa Parks, the Dalai Lama, and Ambassador Andrew Young, among others.

From Publishers Weekly
In his introduction, the one-time ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young refers to MLK as "the voice of the century," and this collection deftly pays homage to that powerful voice. Carson (a Stanford University historian) and Shepard have compiled 12 of King's greatest speeches and prefaced them with touching and inspiring introductions written and read by prominent activists, leaders and theologians, including the Dalai Lama, Sen. Edward Kennedy and others. There's a lot more here than the "I Have a Dream" masterpiece (which is beautifully introduced by Dr. Dorothy I. Height, longtime president of the National Council of Negro Women). The material ranges from King's early talks in Alabama churches to the magnificent "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech, which he gave the night before his assassination. Many of the recordings have a raw quality, giving them authenticity. When King proclaims in his address to the first Montgomery Improvement Association mass meeting that democracy is "the greatest form of government on earth," the attendees' background cheers are so deafening that listeners will have to turn down the volume. The only element lacking in this noteworthy production is an adequate set of liner notes there are no dates for the material showcased, nor do the editors tell which speeches are on which CD. Simultaneous release with the Warner hardcover.

Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
The word "landmark" may be applied not only to these speeches of King's but to this production as well. Great care has been taken in the writing and reading of introductions to each piece by some of the great names in Civil Rights history, bearing witness to King's call to conscience. Participants include Coretta Scott King, Andrew Young, Martin Luther King III, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, and Dr. Dorothy I. Height. To hear an audience swell with excitement as King slowly and confidently builds emotional tension tempered with moral reasoning and intellectual prowess is to feel the thrill of what it must have been like to be in the great man's presence. This monumental work will be an invaluable addition to all library collections. Products of their time, some of the original recordings contain flaws in audio quality, but this does not detract at all from the overwhelming power and inherent goodness of the words or the man who spoke them. Great work, pity about the CD's
By Amazon Customer
As an insight in MLK Jr and his power as a speaker, the audio version is wonderful. However, the CD's have a fundamental flaw - 5 of the discs cannot be played on a computer or in the car. It seems that they have some wacky indexing system that means that computers and car CD players can't read the necessary info. I've tried the discs in 3 computers and 2 cars - all with the same result. A terrible flaw in a wonderful product!! I can't listen to the speeches as I work, or as I drive to work - the only real time that I get to myself. Other than that, they're just about perfect!

A stirring book about a prophet of the sixties
By A Customer
Stanford University Professor Clayborne Carson compiles some of the great speeches by Dr. King that stirred the world into positive social activity. Most of the entries are famous such as the "I Have A dream", a personal favorite not just solely because of the moving address. I shared a row in coach on a plane from Hartsfield to Reagan with Congressman Lewis who still has butterflies from that landmark moment in history any time he flies into DC. The introductions to each oration provide additional perspectives on eleven of the "landmark speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.". This is a wonderful collection that takes the reader back to a time of turmoil in which a prophet arose to awaken a generation into believing not just dreaming that justice and equality needs to be the American way.

Content Great, CAN'T LISTEN TO IT ON MY CD PLAYER
By A Customer
It is no doubt MLK's speeches are great and did alot
to shape American thinking. Unfortunately, I can only
play the first 2 CDs on my CD player. I have a friend
who has a CD player that can play all of them. Apparently
it has something to do with the index numbering on each
CD. Instead of each CD starting at 1 it starts where the previous CD left off. I wouldn't take a chance that this
product won't play in your CD player. I think it is very
unfortunate that I paid so much for the complete set of speeches
and I can't listen to most of it.
I WOULD WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT VERSION COMES OUT THAT CORRECTS THIS
FLAW.
It would have been also nice to have some text to accompany the
audio CDs.

Amazon.com Review
Conspiracy theories--everybody has one. The difference with this conspiracy is that it's all too real. David Baldacci's The Camel Club takes readers inside the Beltway as four unlikely misfits struggle not only to survive, but to save their president and their country from a plot that will lead to nuclear disaster.

Bestselling Baldacci

Last Man Standing
The Winner
Total Control
The Simple Truth
Absolute Power
Saving Faith

From Publishers Weekly
Arab terrorists, nuclear threat and political perfidy drive bestselling Baldacci's latest. The Camel Club, a four-man group of Washington, D.C., misfits (their leader has taken the ironic pseudonym "Oliver Stone") gathers every week to discuss political conspiracies they believe exist and what actions they might take. One night, while meeting on Roosevelt Island in the middle of the Potomac River, club members witness the murder of Secret Service employee Patrick Johnson, thus thrusting the wacky crew into the middle of a bigger conspiracy than they could ever have imagined. There are scores of characters and subplots to keep track of while the story veers back and forth between venues and villains, forcing readers to remain alert yet patient while awaiting the high-concept payoff. When it finally appears, it's a doozy: kidnappers who harm no one and are reasonable people with a legitimate gripe bring the U.S. to the verge of nuking Damascus. Baldacci maintains interest during the long buildup by supplying fascinating historical facts, amusing characters, high-tech spy lore and the backstories of his super agents, both good and evil. As fans of this writer know, years of experience have made him an author who promises a good story and then delivers it. (Oct. 25)

From Booklist
Baldacci returns to Washington D.C., the setting of his first hit, Absolute Power (1996). The Camel Club is made up of four middle-aged men: Stone (in homage to the director Oliver Stone), Milton, Reuben, and Caleb, whose lives have led them to be suspicious of the government and politicians in general. Their late-night excursions mainly consist of White House stakeouts, until the night they discover two men carrying another man while on Roosevelt Island and killing him while making it look like a suicide. The men believe a conspiracy is afoot, and this time, they're right on the money. Secret Service agent Alex Ford, who has a passing acquaintance with Stone, is called into to investigate the death of the man, who happens to be a Secret Service agent, Patrick Johnson. Johnson was supposedly living far above his means and may have had drug connections, but Ford isn't convinced Johnson took his own life. The Camel Club is conducting their own investigation, and before long they realize they've got a massive conspiracy on their hands, one that could affect the global political arena. Baldacci is a master at building suspense, and the conclusion of his latest novel will leave readers breathless. Kristine Huntley

After the first reading I eagerly waited each sequel-none disappointed, I intend to do the same thing again
By Malone's Gram
This is the second time I have read THE CAMEL CLUB. After the first reading I eagerly waited each sequel-none disappointed, I intend to do the same thing again. Oliver Stone is my favorite David Baldacci character. There is much intrique, unlikely friendships, almost unbelievable plot twists and you will find it hard to put down the book.

Baldacci starts a new series with success
By The Professor
A surprise from David. I enjoyed this book very much and found the characters both entertaining and well defined. I found Badacci's knowledge of all things White House fascinating. I have just finished the second of the Camel Club novels and I think I could be tempted to a third, despite my dislike of "unfinished business" at the end of a novel!

Great Read
By John Clark
Baldacci can't be beat when it comes to developing characters in an exciting story with multiple actions going on. It's hard to put it down once you catch on to who all the characters are and realize sometimes not until the end of the story do you find out what some of the connects are between them.

From Publishers Weekly
Like Robert Ludlum, Morrell began his bestselling career with short, tough action yarns (First Blood; Testament), then moved into very long, very complex conspiracy thrillers (The Brotherhood of the Rose). This modestly exciting thriller is a return to his old laconic style, but what's missing is the original plotting that has marked so much of Morrell's fiction. The novel does boast a first-rate setup: narrator Brad Denning is on top of the world, with a great career as an architect, a wonderful wife, Kate, and son, Jason, 11 never mind the trauma that scarred his youth, when his 11-year-old younger brother, Petey, was kidnapped, never to be found. Now a "rough-looking" man shows up outside Brad's Denver office, claiming to be the long-lost Petey. Brad takes Petey, who's apparently become a hard-knock drifter, into his home. Days later, Petey pushes Brad off a cliff, leaving him for dead. Battered Brad claws his way home to find Petey gone, along with the presumably kidnapped Kate and Jason. The remainder of the novel details Brad's cross-country attempt to track them down. Morrell tosses in a major complication when it appears that Petey may not be Petey after all, but few readers will be surprised by the novel's conclusion. Along the way, there are several strong action sequences, particularly one in which Brad gets trapped in a dark, snake-infested cellar, but Morrell has written this sort of pitch-black action scene before. The novel is slick, but there's little in it that's unexpected.

From Library Journal
The author of such suspense novels as Desperate Measures and Black Evening has written another winner. When Brad Denning was a boy, he had a younger brother named Petey. One day at a baseball game, Brad told Petey to get lost, and Petey rode away on his bike never to be seen again. Now Brad is married and has a son almost Petey's age, a constant reminder of his lingering guilt from Petey's disappearance. On a typical morning at the office, a man confronts Brad, claiming to be his long-lost brother and tells him things only Petey could know. Is this really Petey after all these years, or is it a ruthless con man with a hidden agenda? Morrell admirably conveys the terror of losing a family member to unexplained circumstances and maintains the suspense until the last page. For all fiction collections. Jeff Ayers, Seattle P.L.

From Booklist
Little Petey Denning disappeared nearly three decades ago after his older brother Brad shooed him away from a baseball game. Dad took to drink, lost his job, and died. Mom never regained her emotional or financial footing and passed her years as a bitter, lonely woman. Brad buried his grief and his guilt to build a life as a successful architect in Denver with his wife Kate and son Jason. And now Petey has come to Denver to reunite with his brother. Initially Brad doesn't believe it, but Petey knows things about their childhood that only he could know. Brad wants to make it up to his brother, but Petey, who was kidnapped and raised by religious fundamentalists, has other plans. On a camping trip, he pushes Brad off a cliff and kidnaps Kate and Jason. Brad survives the fall, but a year later, the FBI still hasn't found Jason, Kate, or Petey, who they believe is, in fact, a con man named Lester Dant. Brad, with the guidance of a retired FBI agent turned private eye, tosses aside what's left of his life to find his family. Morrell has always had the ability to put the reader right in the middle of the action, and he does it again here in riveting fashion. Scary, one-night reading with a sad, believable conclusion. A family is torn apart by terrors from the past.
By E. Bukowsky
David Morrell's "Long Lost," is about Brad and Karen Denning, a happily married couple who live with their eleven-year-old son, Jason, in Denver, Colorado. Brad is a prosperous and well-known architect. He has received favorable magazine and television coverage praising the innovative structures that he has built. Brad has one major regret in life. When he was a thirteen-year-old youngster in Ohio, he once told his nine-year-old brother, Petey to go home by himself, since Brad's friends didn't want a little kid tagging along with them. Tragically, Petey got on his bike, pedaled away, and disappeared off the face of the earth. Petey's disappearance devastated the Denning family and Brad has never gotten over his grief and his guilt over the loss of his brother.

One day, a man shows up out of the blue and calls out Brad's name while Brad is walking along the street in downtown Denver. The man states that he had seen a television spot featuring Brad, and he insists that he is Petey, Brad's long-lost brother. "Petey" claims to be elated to have the opportunity to reconnect at last with his family and he seems anxious to make up for all the lost years when the brothers were separated. After an initial period of understandable skepticism, Brad buys the man's story, particularly because "Petey" knows facts about the boys' childhood that no one else could have told him.

Brad soon finds that he has inadvertently plunged himself and his family into a morass of terror and despair by allowing this man into his home. Is this man really Brad's long-lost brother, or is he an impostor? What soon becomes clear is that "Petey's" agenda is not about reconciliation. Brad is soon put into a position of having to single-handedly save his family and himself from disaster.
Morrell's writing in "Long Lost" is simple and understated. The chapters are brief and he uses the first person, which makes the action more personal and immediate. The novel is fast-paced and exciting and the reader is kept on the edge of his seat wondering how the plot will resolve itself. The only downside is that occasional melodramatic touches seep into the narrative, and there are a few cliches that detract from the flow of the story. However, for the most part "Long Lost" is a good summer read. Put your feet up and prepare to lose yourself in a story about a desperate person who will do anything to reclaim his life from a very dangerous man.

taut suspense thriller
By A Customer
As the older sibling thirteen-year-old Brad Denning knew he was responsible for his kid brother nine-year-old tag along Petey. However, his friends encouraged Brad to send Petey home. So Brad told Petey to leave. The sobbing preadolescent biked away. However, when Brad returned home for supper he learns that Petey did not come home. Frantically their parents called friends and the police, but the skinny little kid never came home.

Nearing forty, Brad is married, has a son, and has a successful architect career, but remains guilt stricken by the sobbing of a LONG LOST nine year old. Desperate for closure he appeals on TV for Petey to come home. In Denver, a mangy looking construction worker calls Brad by name insisting he is Petey. Though initially skeptical, Brad begins to believe him because this guy knows insider things about Brad and their parents. Brad takes Petey home, where his wife and son warmly welcome him.

While camping, Petey shoves Brad off the edge of a cliff before abducting his sister-in-law and nephew. Brad survives and begins an odyssey to rescue his family from the avenging serpent.

LONG LOST is a taut suspense thriller that hooks readers from the very first line until the one sitting tale is finished. Though Petey's revenge seems extreme, especially the events he committed after he left his brother for dead, the suspenseful plot thoroughly retains its grip on the reader. David Morrell has furnished a powerful haunting thriller with a frightening ending that just adds to the depth of a hard to forget novel

Under Morrell's Standards.....
By Juan C Villamil
LONG LOST is definitely a page turner. I read it in two days. However, as with Morrell's THE PROTECTOR, I was expecting more. I've read most of what he has written, and his most recent books cannot be compared to his earlier ones.

LONG LOST is different from most of all his other novels, in the sense that the main character is not a bodyguard, spy or other type of super human caracter. Brad Denning is a typical wealthy american, who is dedicated to his work and his family. He is, however seriously affected by the fact that his kid brother was kidnapped 25 years before. He feels responsible and has carried guilt with him practically all his life.

The plot is well laid out, and Brad Denning is a credible character.

The book is very easy to read and chapter after chapter you will simply want to go on, and find out what happens next. The ending, which again never happened with most of his prior works, is rather predictable.

If this book is compared to others of the same genre, it will definitely come out on top, but Morrell has set very high standards with his prior novels, and fans will be left with a bit of a sense of emptiness.

Overall, the book is pretty good, and it's worth the time it takes to go through the 300+ pages.

I am starting to think that the muses of inspiration have abandoned Morrell, but since he still has to make a living, he continues to write.

Being not only an avid reader, but also a music addict, I must say if I compare books to music, I had a similar feeling with U2, right after they released RATTLE AND HUM. In my opinion, they put out quite a few weak albums, which people continued to buy simple because it was U2.

Morrell has written so many good books, that I am willing to give him alast chance. If his next book does not rise to my expectations, that's it for me and him.

From Publishers Weekly
British author Beaton's Hamish Macbeth series remains reliable on several fronts: her Scots police officer Hamish will solve the crimes in an appropriately heroic and entertaining way; he will be as clueless as ever in regard to the women who set their caps for him; and he will continue to resist both promotion out of his remote village of Lochdubh and restrictions imposed by his nominal superiors. In this, the 20th entry (after 2003's Death of a Village), a series of poisoned pen letters have the townspeople of the nearby town of Braikie on edge, and rumor and suspicion threaten to lead to violence. Hamish faces danger of another sort, when Jenny Ogilvie, a London friend of Hamish's old flame Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, decides that romancing Hamish would be a delicious way to bother Priscilla. The author adeptly limns her village characters' foibles and frailties, and the poisoned pen letters set them off in high relief. Set pieces abound, from detective Jimmy Anderson's cadging of drinks, to Detective Chief Inspector Blair's ineptness and animosity, to the endless misunderstandings that separate Hamish and reporter Elspeth Grant. While the tunes Beaton's characters dance to may be familiar, they vary just enough to keep fans turning the pages.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–Poison pen letters have been appearing all over the Scottish Highlands town of Braikie–and then a spate of murders and suicides ensues. Hamish Macbeth, the local constable of a nearby village, must get to the bottom of things without drawing too much attention to himself. If he sorts out another local mystery, he risks being promoted, and that would take him away from all that he loves in sleepy Lochdubh. As the Highlands' weather veers wildly from one extreme to another, Hamish dodges pesky superior officers and follows his own paths among the people he understands better than any outsider can. The place has no shortage of eccentrics but most of Lochdubh's regulars take a back seat to several 20-somethings who become an integral part of the story as it develops. They include a vacationer from London with dangerously poor judgment; an enterprising local reporter as unconventional as Hamish himself; another reporter, a caddish but "charming Irishman"; a bullied young secretary at the local school; and away in London, but never far from Hamish's mind, his star-crossed soul mate. Readers unfamiliar with the series can easily begin with this volume, but if they do, they are likely to seek out the earlier novels. This fictional world–part cozy, part unsparing–can be highly addictive.–Christine C. Menefee, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

From Booklist
Lochdubh, a fictive tiny village in the Scottish Highlands, has been visited by every conceivable type of murder in the long-running series starring local cop Hamish Macbeth. In this, the twentieth entry, the weapon of choice is the poison-pen letter. A spate of letters (including one accusing the stolid rector's wife of having an affair with the much younger Macbeth) spreads bad will, uncovers old secrets, and leads directly to two homicides. Beaton's cozies (she also writes the Agatha Raisin series) are a bit on the old-fashioned side. There is very little police procedure, much romance, and sometimes too much village minutiae. What rescues the Macbeth series from being Agatha Christie retreads are Macbeth's quirks, the deft social comedy, and the wonderfully realized Highlands atmosphere. This time, by bringing an outsider to the village (a woman up from London expressly to seduce Macbeth), Beaton effectively opens up the social comedy. A first-rate cozy. Connie Fletcher

A Scottish Highland adventure
By SDRTX
DEATH OF A POISON PEN is set in a small village in the Scottish Highlands. It is populated with quirky characters and a lovable, bumbling, tall, red-haired constable named Hamish McBeth. Hamish is somewhat lazy and likes his little village to run smoothly, but it never does. This time around some villagers are receiving poison pen letters. A postmistress is found hanged in her room and a vacationer comes to Lochdubh with the sole purpose of seducing him. He does have his hands full these days.
I consider the Hamish McBeth series the better of the two series that M.C. Beaton writes. The characters really make the stories endearing and fun. That Hamish ever solves any case always seems like sheer fluke, but you are always rooting for him. The plots are always rather straightforward and not too complicated and it makes for a quick read. This is a perfect book for a rainy afternoon.

ANOTHER RELAXING READ IN A GREAT SERIES
By D. Blankenship
I must admit to being rather addicted to the "cozy mystery" genre. They are a source of relaxation for me. These, the Hamish Macbeth series by M.C. Beaton, are some of my favorites. As other reviewers have pointed out, each of the twenty or more books are much the same. Same plot, same characters, same locations, etc. etc. That is okay though. I find this rather comforting. The various characters in Beaton's stories sort of become friends as you keep reading her books and this is always nice.

In this offering, quite a number of the resident's of Hamish's village are recipients of poison pen letters, some which are wild accusations, some with a grain of truth and some, hitting quite close to home. Suddenly Officer Macbeth has two murders on his hands and an endless list of suspects to sort through. The plot though, is actually sort of secondary to this particular series. For me it is the characters, the description of the Scottish Country Side, the almost dark humor and the interaction between the many characters that make the book.

M.C. Beaton is certainly a story teller and is able to articulate her stories through her writing quite well. The humor is dry, and as I said, can be a bit dark at times, but can be hilarious at the same time. Hamish Macbeth, the rather bright and likable police officer is, throughout this work, as with the others, absolutely mystified with the females in his life, and his somewhat quaint love life. As one reviewer put it, he does not have a clue! I love the author's description of the towns, food, country side, people and of course, Hamish's relationship with his dog.

The author tells a simple story which is easy to read (no great thought is required, which is very nice) and the stories are quite fast moving. I find the author's syntax to the quite smooth and a pleasure to read. This is one series I will no doubt stick with and look forward to more. Highly recommend this one if this is your sort of cup of tea.

Oh That Wonderful Hamish!
By Shirley Schwartz
Hamish Macbeth is a wonderful character. He always seems to bumble his way to a solution in the many murders that seem to occur in his area, but underneath that shambling exterior is a mind that is as sharp as a whip. The Hamish Macbeth series is one of my very favourite series, and even though Ms. Beaton has about 20 entries in the series it just never seems to get stale. The characters that we meet with every book (the wonderful, eccentric citizens of Lochdubh), plus the new ones that she introduces each time are what make this series so special. I am sad that I've now caught up to Ms. Beaton, and now I am relegated to waiting (very impatiently I might add) for the next book. I have enjoyed every minute that I've spent with Hamish in wonderful Lochdubh. In this book, Hamish has been bothered with a vicious poison pen writer in the neighbouring village of Braike. He is worried because he fears that this letter campaign is going to lead to murder, and sure enough that's what happens. He and his wonderful "lady friend" Elspeth work together to try to trap the writer and to find the murderer. It turns out that they're not one and the same. Hamish also gains the help of another young lady that is visiting Lochdubh. She said it was for a holiday, but actually her intent was to try to ensare Hamish as a form of "getting back" at her uppity friend Priscilla, who even though she is engaged to be married, still seems to carry a torch for Hamish. This series is superb entertainment, and I can give no higher accolade than that.

Finally, An Up-to-Date Book on Shyness in Children
By A Customer
In The Shy Child, Dr. Ward Swallow finally set my mind at ease about why my child is so shy and how much I can do about it. He validated my own instinct to accept shyness as a way of being that has its place in the world--and to resist forcing my child to completely change the personality she was born with. With acceptance as a jumping off point, he helped me get inside the mind of my shy child and to understand her reticence at last.
At the same time, Dr. Swallow acknowledges that it is crucial for my CHILD to understand shyness, as well. Shy children who don't get in touch with their inner "self-talk" can become depressed when they feel limited in what they want to do in life. The book's explicit, age-appropriate approaches to handling situations that cause anxiety in a shy child gave me confidence to talk directly to my child about shyness. I now think I can help her identify things she would like to do but thinks she can't, and to summon the courage to find success in situations that previously left her in tears.
I had previously read Zimbardo's book on shyness in children, and I was dismayed to find that it offers outdated psychological explanations for different personalities, making shyness seem like a disorder, rather than a personality type. I found Dr. Swallow's approach much more reasonable and I think it offers much more potential for liberating a shy child from self-reproach.

Took what I needed from this book
By Jeneroo2u
My son is sensitive and has a harder time with strangers and new situations. This book helped me realize what he goes through and now I can try and help him deal with it better. Since he started a new preschool with older kids, he's become more outgoing and talks a lot more. Hurray! I think we will always have to help him with this as it's not something that will go away completely, but now we know what works and what makes it worse, so we feel so much better about it.

I also recommend "The Highly Sensitive Child" in conjunction with this book because there is a difference between being "sensitive" and "shy" and someone starting to figure it out may not know the differences. Good luck!

Not enough practical advice
By proreader
I didn't find this book that useful. I thought the analysis was pretty pedestrian and not that insightful but I was particularly distressed not to get more practical advice. A disappointment--if you are looking for concrete strategies to help your child's shyness, I would not recommend this book.

Review
"Beyond a doubt one of the most remarkable first novels produced by an American writer. It is also one of the best." -- The New York Times

"The best novel to have ever come out of the South...it is unsurpassed in the whole of American writing." -- The Washington Post

"Fascinating and unforgettable! A remarkable book, a spectacular book, a book that will not be forgotten!" -- Chicago Tribune

"Gone with the Wind is one of those rare books that we never forget. We read it when we're young and fall in love with the characters, then we watch the film and read the book again and watch the film again and never get tired of revisiting an era that is the most important in our history. Rhett and Scarlet and Melanie and Ashley and Big Sam and Mammy and Archie the convict are characters who always remain with us, in the same way that Twain's characters do. No one ever forgets the scene when Scarlet wanders among the wounded in the Atlanta train yard; no one ever forgets the moment Melanie and Scarlet drag the body of the dead Federal soldier down the staircase, a step at a time. Gone with the Wind is an epic story. Anyone who has not read it has missed one of the greatest literary experiences a reader can have." -- James Lee Burke, bestselling author of The Tin Roof Blowdown

"I first read Gone with the Wind in grade school--a boy of the upper South who'd seen the great movie and felt compelled to learn what lay behind it, all thousand-plus pages worth. No page disappointed me. What other American novel surpasses its eagerness to tell a great story of love and war; what characters equal the cantankerous passions of Scarlett and Rhett? Even Scott Fitzgerald spoke well of it. What more could I ask, even seven decades later?" -- Reynolds Price

"In my own personal life, I find many similarities to Scarlett's: The whole 17-inch waist thing notwithstanding, I do love a barbecue, both for the food and the men--I have been known to "eat like a field hand and gobble like a hawg"--I admit that at least on one occasion I may have feigned interest in some guy to further my own interests--I have fought tooth, toenail and tirelessly for my family--I learn slow but I learn good--and even so, I still adore the prospect of dealing with most things...Tomorrow." -- Jill Conner Browne, The Sweet Potato Queen, bestselling author of The Sweet Potato Queens' First Big-Ass Novel

"In 1936 I was in E.M. Daggett Junior High in Ft. Worth, Texas. By some chance I was able to read Gone with the Wind early on. Then and now, I found it one of the great experiences of a young life. I still list it as one of my 10 favorite books." -- Liz Smith, nationally syndicated columnist

"Not just a great love story, Gone with the Wind is one of the most powerful anti-war novels ever written. Told from the standpoint of the women left behind, author Margaret Mitchell brilliantly illustrates the heartbreaking and devastating effects of war on the land and its people." -- Fannie Flagg, Academy Award nominated-author

"Let's say you've read Gone with the Wind at least twice, and seen the movie over and again. So, here's a thought. Buy this handsome paperback edition, just for Pat Conroy's preface. This passionate, nearly breathless love letter is a Song of Solomon to Margaret Mitchell, Scarlett O'Hara, and Conroy's beautiful, GTW-obsessed mother. Indeed, his luminous preface packs a durable wallop, just like the epic Pulitzer prize-winning work that inspires it." -- Jan Karon, author of The Mitford Years series

"GWTW is an indelible portrait of a unique time and place, American's greatest political and moral conflict, and the myths that surround it -- an all absorbing spectacle of a read even for postmodern readers. Mitchell vividly portrays the disillusionment and devastation of war, the ignorance of the uninitiated, and the transformation of arrogance into tenacity that shaped the first "new South." All the details of history and place come together as a rich backdrop for those unforgettable characters: shallow and selfish Scarlett, sincere Melanie, moony-eyed Ashley, and the sage, pragmatic, dashing, and rakish Rhett Butler--the most enduring heartthrob of American literature has produced. I'd reread the book for the thrill of Rhett alone!" -- Darnell Arnoult, author of Sufficient Grace

"For sheer readability I can think of nothing it must give way before. Miss Mitchell proves herself a staggeringly gifted storyteller."
--The New Yorker

About the Author
American journalist and author Margaret Mitchell is best known for her epic Civil War-era novel, Gone with the Wind, for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937. Mitchell was born and bred in the South, and family stories about the Civil War influenced her writing, particularly Gone with the Wind. Mitchell was also an accomplished journalist, writing more than 125 features for the Atlanta Journal before retiring due to an injury. Although Gone with the Wind was the only novel to be published by Mitchell during her life (Lost Laysen, a novella written by Mitchell as a teenager was published posthumously in 1996), she continues to be considered one of the pre-eminent authors of the early 1900s.

Surprisingly Brilliant - A Work of Art
By Mark D Burgh
I'm a literary snob, I'll admit it. I've read all the classics, and I even know some Literary Theory. Gone With the Wind? Pul-lease, racist, sexist, revanchist trash, made popular by all the young woman dreaming of being Scarlett and having both their Rhett and Ashley. Cheerleader fare. Escapist. WRONG!
Gone with the Wind is an American War & Peace. This is serious literature, which won the Pulitzer prize, no less. Most people don't see past the epic plot (which isn't as cut and dried as you may think) or the love story, but this is no less than a successfull attempt to reclaim a discarded culture. It is not about crinoline and lace, it it about the Apocalypse and how losers of the counter-revolution must learn to live in a place where all their politics, personal or civil, are demolished. Scarlett O'Hara is popular because she is an American, driven, materialistic, sentimental and utterly ruthless. Rhett Bulter is the tragic character of this book; the way of life and ideals he disdained are killing him, and he suffers like no one else in this post-apocalyptic landscape. His departure at the end is an act of contrition as much as a romantic failure; he had tried to recreate the materialism of the ante-bellum world, but negeclected the spirituality (such as it is) of men like Ashley Wilkes. Both men, the dreamer and the realist end up alone in a very sterile place. This book is proto-feminist as well. Scarlett survives, even as everything around her dies, but in the end, she too is alone.
Don't dumb this masterpiece down. The movie fails to capture even a tenth of the depth here. And that awful sequel! Caused by the mistake that this book is some kind of romance novel. This is Art, and you can't stick a new ending on it, any more than you can a great painting or musical composition.

The BEST
By A Customer
I've read GWTW many times -once you get going you can't stop! I once gave a copy to a friend to read -she said it was 'too old fashioned' oh well her loss. I'm glad I'm in the company of true 'Windies' so I thought I'd share with you some interesting facts about the book: -Scarlett was originally named Pansy
-Scarlett was partly based on Mitchell herself and her grandmother
-Rhett was based on Mitchell's first husband Red Upshaw
-the initials JRM in her dedication refer to her second husband John Reginald Marsh
-Margaret Mitchell maintained the only character taken from real life was Prissy the maid
-When asked who she'd like to be in the movie version, Mitchell said 'Prissy'
-Like a detective novelist, Mitchell wrote the last chapter first and the first chapter last
-GWTW is the only book to sell more copies than the bible
-Mitchell nearly went blind just proofreading the manuscript!
-Mitchell scrupously researched every detail for GWTW, even going to the town register to ensure there was no Rhett Butler or Scarlett O'Hara alive during the Civil War
-The novel took ten years to complete, most of it was written in three
-For style, she endeavoured to make her prose so that a five-year old could read it
-If she were ever to write a sequel, it would be called 'Back With the Breeze' On that note, please avoid the Ripley penned sequel 'Scarlett', it is atrocious.
-Gone with the Wind is my favourite book of all time, and yours too, I hope. Enjoy!

One word --- WOW!!!!
By Misfit
I would give this 10 stars if I could. I haven't read this since I was a young girl in the early 70's and should never have waited so long to read it again. The characters were exceptionally well drawn, the dialogue was brilliant, particularly between Rhett (SIGH!) and Scarlett. I swear there was sparks flying off the pages. I am going to miss the people I will have to put behind me now that the book has come to an end, Rhett (SIGH), Scarlett, Mammy, Prissy and Aunt Pitty Pat (LOL).

The author's use of prose was beautiful, all the scenes and action came alive for me. Some people seem to be offended by the racism in the book, but that's how things were back then. Sugar coating it would have ruined the story reducing it to a Harlequin romance.

This is an incredibly well written book about the death of a civilization and the struggles to survive in the new era. This is a book that should not be missed, particulary those who enjoy historical fiction.
