Amazon.com Review
David Morrell is best known for testosterone-fueled thrillers like Extreme Denial and First Blood (whose excellent movie version, reissued on DVD in 1999, stars Sylvester Stallone as Rambo). But Morrell has also penned many frightfully scary short stories. In Black Evening, he presents 16 of his favorites, each with a fascinating introduction explaining what provoked him to write it.

"The Dripping" (1971) came to the author in a dream that most would regard as a nightmare. In this eerie little number, a father faces his worst fear when his family goes missing. Morrell suffered his own family tragedy in January of 1987, when his son Matt was diagnosed with bone cancer. "Orange Is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity" (the Horror Writers Association's best novella of 1988) was written shortly before Matt's death. Writing about a mad painter kept Morrell sane: "The made-up horror was paradoxically providing a barrier from real-life horror." But after Matt's death, Morrell was besieged with panic attacks, and could do nothing but "stare at the ceiling" for three years. A harrowing story about lost children and a long buried family secret, "The Beautiful Uncut Hair of Graves" (another HWA award-winner) signified Morrell's return to short fiction. The title is taken from Walt Whitman's poem about death and children; John Rambo's name is a pun on Arthur Rimbaud. Morrell is a genre writer with a poet's soul.

And whether he's writing stories of subtle psychological terror or conjuring up scenarios of pure horror, Morrell never fails to scare the bejesus out of us. --Naomi Gesinger

From Publishers Weekly
Though best known for his high-action thrillers, Morrell has traveled many side roads in his long writing career--horror novels, westerns, even a highly personal account of his teenage son's losing battle with cancer. Now, he offers up a generally intriguing but uneven collection of 15 short stories written over a 20-year period ending in 1992. Many of the entries here are vintage Morrell, featuring dark themes, dark humor, bursts of action, a setting that's slightly askew and a main character driven by fear. "The Typewriter" tells of a writer's panic when his magic typewriter no longer turns out bestsellers. "At My Back I Always Hear" is a haunting account of a college professor (which Morrell once was) stalked by a student. The best of the stories showcase Morrell's ability to capture pure, hard-driving suspense, often culminating in unspeakable tragedy or bizarre discovery. These include "Orange Is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity" and "The Beautiful Uncut Hair of Graves." The weaker links among the entries are those with a decidedly creepy bent representative of Morrell's horror period. Among them are "The Dripping," Morrell's first published work; "Black Evening"; and "For These and All My Sins." Even the less successful stories, however, have a gripping quality--some twist or mood that drives the plot forward and locks a reader's attention. Morrell (The Brotherhood of the Rose) prefaces all the stories with personal anecdotes and other autobiographical reflections that place them in a meaningful context. In a foreword and afterword, Morrell talks about his career thus far.

Finally in one volume
By Michael Lerch
There have been several times that I have bought an anthology like "Prime Evil" so that I could read an otherwise unreleased Stephen King or Clive Barker story, and ended up being blown away by the stories of David Morrell. Finally, K-Tel-like, everyone can enjoy these powerful, imaginative stories without having to buy a dozen other books.
While this collection does not contain all of Morrell's short fiction, it does contain all that I had read in other anthologies, most notably the powerhouse novella "Orance is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity," one of my all-time pieces of fiction, short or otherwise. I am a fan of author notes in collections, and Morrell doesn't disappoint. While he doesn't expound the way that, say, Harlan Ellison does, there are short notes before each store in addition to a Foreword and Afterword, and these add a texture to the book that I think makes your first read more enjoyable and increases the re-readability. Plus if you've already read a couple of these in anthologies it is nice to see the author's perspective instead of the anthology editor's perspective before the stories.
I read this during a particularly hot summer week and found it to be perfect for this setting...the stories are engrossing enough that I forgot about the heat, and a few times I caught a genuine bit of a chill! Anyone who enjoys dark stories or speculative fiction should give this great book a read.

Great stories, vintage Morrell!
By Zes
I just read a few of the stories in "Black Evening" and had a lot of scary delights. David Morrell is great when it comes to suspense and thrillers and now, horror. He mixes a sense of his thrillers in with his horror stories making them much more exciting. I could even go on to compare with Stephen Kings short stories in "Skeleton Crew" Well done Mr.Morrell!

The Good Marriage: How and Why Love Lasts, by Judith S. Wallerstein, Sandra Blkeslee

What's Your Marriage? * The Romantic Marriage: exciting, sensual memories of your first meeting radiate a glow over years. * The Rescue Marriage: the healing that follows early emotional trauma becomes the central theme. * The Companionate Marriage: commitment to careers seeks a balance with commitment to relationship and children. * The Traditional Marriage: the woman takes charge of home and family while the man is the primary wage earner. Hundreds of books have been written about marriages that don't work. But what about the ones that do? Now Judith S. Wallerstein, bestselling author and leading relationships expert, reveals the natural stages of marriage and the nine tasks you must undertake to make a good marriage. As she introduces us to a number of ordinary yet fascinating couples, the intimate interiors of their lives, and the countless pressures they face in an age of divorce, you'll see how happy, lasting marriages are challenged and rebuilt every day-and how, whatever your marriage type, you and your partner can share a joyful, exhilarating, and fulfilling lifetime together.

Amazon.com Review
Inspired by the hope that the experience of satisfied husbands and wives might provide useful lessons to others, Wallerstein, a clinical psychologist and specialist on divorce, and Sandra Blakeslee, who writes frequently for The New York Times, interviewed 50 predominantly middle-class, northern California couples who had been married nine years or more and had at least one child. These strong marriages flourish, they argue, because every partner confronted a series of psychological tasks including separating emotionally from the family of childhood, carving out his or her autonomy and creating an environment where anger and conflict could be safely vented. The couples reveal their interior lives in rich, explicit detail.

From Publishers Weekly
Based on interviews with 50 happily married couples, this book examines the factors that allow relationships to succeed.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Although Wallerstein is best known for her work on divorce, she and Blakeslee (coauthors of Second Chances, LJ 2/1/89) have put together a very appealing book based on interviews with 50 couples who are still together, and still happy, after years of marriage. Most of the book is concerned with defining the four types of marriages (romantic, rescue, companionate, and traditional) that Wallerstein discovered through her interviews. Descriptions of four couples who idealize these types are given in minute detail. The rest of the book outlines nine developmental tasks-derived from Wallerstein's practice as well as the interviews-that couples need to accomplish if their marriage is to be a happy one. Despite some oddities, such as the amount of extraneous detail given when discussing the interviewees' homes, and the fact that this was based on a small and skewed sample group-all participants were middle or upper-middle class and all but one couple were Caucasian-this book will appeal to public library users who want a clearly written and clearly thought out analysis of this universally interesting topic.

Best of all the books I've read in preparing for marriage
By JustAnotherScreenName
I have read 10-15 books relating to marriage preparation and making sure one is ready to pick and BE a good spouse. This was by far the best. The author reassured me that people who grew up with unhappy childhoods & unhappy parents have as good a chance at a happy marriage as others. It also made me aware of many issues these couples had that I had not considered. This book prompted me to think about what I want from my future husband as a type of marriage, as an emotional partner, as a parental partner etc. MUST READ! I also highly recommend "What you Need to know before you fall in Love" as a good gut check of what is normal in a relationship and what isn't, what areas you need to check on (do you have a meeting of the minds spiritually, financially, intellectually etc), and it has a great chapter on warning signs (are you dating this person to impress your boss, annoy your parents, or get revenge on an ex?). I highly recommend Harville Hendrix's Book "How to Find the Love you Want" for a more in depth look at how our childhood affects our need for love and influences our search for the source of that love.

We could surely use more studies like this one
By Brad4d
The authors bring a rather unusual perspective to the study of marriage -- rather than examining how it has failed or is failing, they examine how marriage can succeed. The book provides a commendable example of a study focusing on success instead of failure. The authors first define a successful marriage, then discuss nine principles common to any good marriage and use several couples as case studies to illustrate and personalize these principles. The book uses a rather small, homogenous, and politically incorrect sample -- nearly all couples were selected by the authors and were lily-white, heterosexual, reasonably honest and cheerful Americans. Of course, many ground-breaking and valid scientific studies have successfully used such small, homogenous and politically incorrect cohorts. The book is not a cross-cultural study, an historical analysis, or a "how-to" guide for "making marriage work," and those whose marriages are in trouble may not find this book much of a substitute for self-analysis or competent counseling.
Since history began, in nearly all societies, marriage has successfully survived despite never-ending pressures from those who have sought to abolish, revolutionize, over-idealize, or trivialize it. Marriage has proven flexible, durable, and critically important to individuals and to societies. Nevertheless, individuals and societies should frequently re-examine and re-explore marriage if they are to gain the most benefits from it -- marriage and success are verbs as well as nouns. Marriage and the family certainly need attentive examination today, since they remain under tremendous stresses from those who wish to change (or destroy) them and from forces causing them to fail at an increasing rate.
The authors have given us a fine example of such an examination. They write remarkably well (no surprise, given Ms Blakeslee's wonderful columns in the NY Times Science Section, which first drew me to this book). They relate how marriage can be enriching, empowering, dynamic, transformative, redemptive, and positive (I found myself cheering on one of the subjects whose marriage succeeded despite enormous psychological problems dating from his childhood). As the husband of a wife whose parents had a successful marriage, as the child of a successful marriage, and as a member of a thirty-three year old successful marriage, I found the principles outlined in this book to be reasonably accurate and helpful. No book could be the last word, but this one is a fine place to start.

Good marriage?
By Elisabeth
Some relationships in this book appeared healthy. For example, the guy who defied his mother by marrying his fiancé. He was quite young at the time, yet had the maturity to choose his own path, even if that meant upsetting his mother.

However, I questioned the healthiness of others. For example, one couple felt that without each other, they'd panic as if being sucked into a black hole. Feeling emotionally incomplete, they latched onto their partners hoping their partners would save them...kind of like a drowning victim clutching a floating device for dear life.

But a drowning and desperate person doesn't make a good partner. I've been on the receiving end of a relationship like this & it felt very suffocating. I eventually left this relationship and am glad I did. The author may view this type of relationship as good, but I saw it as suffocating.

The chapter that completely turned me off, though, was the one on infidelity. The author asked "good marriage" couples their views on infidelity. These couples said they'd be okay if their partner cheated as long as the affair was brief and resulted out of loneliness - like being apart due to a long business trip.

So, sneaking around, breaking mutually agreed upon vows, and lying to your partners face is okay as long as you invent a good enough excuse? That sounds desperate to me.
I believe good character should matter more than good excuses that disguise poor character.

Take one woman who cheated on her husband. When asked if she felt any remorse, the woman LAUGHED and replied, "Not at all."
When asked how the marriage was going at the time, she replied, "It was fine. But the moon was full, and my husband was 5,000 miles away."

Now, I've heard some pretty lame excuses for cheating...but blaming the moon?
I wonder how casually this woman would've reacted if, while she was away, her husband had an affair, too. After all, he was also 5,000 miles away. Would she find HIS infidelity funny enough to laugh about? More importantly, if he knew of her affair, would he find it funny? Would he still consider the marriage a good one?

In another example, a wife feeling depleted by her husband's breakdown and depression said, "I gave myself the present of a brief affair with a much younger man."
I wonder, though, if this generosity extended to her husband, too...allowing him to also seek out "presents" whenever he felt drained by his wife. I'm guessing like the previous example, this marriage was "good" based on how ignorant the husband was.

Both of these women, as well as other women in that chapter, spoke of committing adultery as a perfectly normal way to treat someone you love...but it's not normal or loving.

Trust is a precious gift someone can give you. Instead of handling that precious gift with care, they took advantage of it for their own selfish gain. If people can behave this selfishly and still be considered a "good marriage" couple, that's setting the bar pretty low.

On the bright side, the author does advise against cheating., however, I disagree with her reason. She says marriage involves sacrifice and one sacrifice is settling for a tamer sex life. Well, if you phrase monogamy like that, who in their right mind would choose it?

Monogamy doesn't have to be tame. On a surface level, you can add excitement with different positions and locales. On a deeper level, you add excitement by being vulnerable enough to trust your partner with your deepest desires.
So monogamy is as tame or as creative as the couple who makes it.

As a single person, I like reading self-help books that model healthy behavior for long-lasting relationships. Unfortunately, this book wasn't helpful.

Amazon.com Review
If you thought The Notebook was a tearjerker, get out the hankies, pull up a chair, and get ready to have your heart monkey-wrenched by Nicholas Sparks's second star-crossed love story, Message in a Bottle. When Theresa Osborne takes a much-needed summer holiday at Cape Cod, she finds a lot more than a break from the hustle and bustle. On an early-morning jog along Cape Cod Bay, she comes across a corked bottle with a scrolled-up message inside that reads, "My Dearest Catherine, I miss you, my darling, as I always do, but today is especially hard because the ocean has been singing to me, and the song is that of our life together..." It bobbles around in the same vein for several more paragraphs and ends with "...am alone on the pier and I do not care what others think as I bow my head and cry and cry and cry. Garret."

Garret may eat quiche, but no bother--before you can say "Look! I found two more letters!" Theresa is hot on his trail and determined to find this mysterious yet sensitive message-in-a-bottle man. She finds him at a sleepy North Carolina port, working on his beloved sailboat, The Happenstance. From there, a romance buds and blossoms into a colorful bouquet of emotional baggage. Theresa has problems with her past--or, more accurately, her past is a problem. She is so scarred from her "I'm a super churchgoing guy now that I've run out on my wife" ex-husband that she hasn't tried to date since her divorce some three or four years before. And who is Catherine? And what's Garret's bag, anyway? When Theresa finds out, she plunges to the depths of her soul and uncorks a whopper of a secret about herself, bringing Garret to terms with who he really is.

Message in a Bottle has the earmarks of sentimental tongue-wagging at its finest and should please romantics and cynics alike--it's sure to bring romantics to their knees, while cynics will be slapping theirs in laughter. --Rebekah Warren

From Publishers Weekly
Avoiding a sophomore slump, Sparks follows The Notebook with another sentimental candidate for the bestseller lists. Boston parenting columnist Theresa Osborne has lost faith in the dream of everlasting love. Three years after divorcing her cheating husband, the single mother is vacationing on Cape Cod when she finds a bottle washed up on the shore. Inside, a message begins: "My Dearest Catherine, I miss you." Subsequent publication of the poignant missive in her column turns up two more letters, found by others, from the same mysterious writer, Garrett Blake. Piqued by his epistolary constancy, Theresa follows the trail to North Carolina, where she discovers that Garrett has been mourning his late wife for three years; writing the sea-borne messages is his only solace. Theresa also finds that Garrett just might be ready to love again... and that she might be the woman for him. There are few surprises here as we watch the couple learn to love in Catherine's slowly waning shadow. By the time they do, Sparks has proved that a man who romantically (and manually) pens missives to his lost lady love in the era of e-mail is a welcome hero in this fin-de-millennium fax-happy world. (Knowing that Kevin Costner has been slated to play Garrett on screen doesn't hurt, either.) Film rights to Warner Bros.; simultaneous Time Warner audio; Literary Guild main selection and Reader's Digest select edition; author tour.

From Booklist
Sparks' second novel proves that his best-selling The Notebook (1996) was no fluke as, once again, he offers his audience a deeply moving, beautifully written, and extremely romantic love story. Theresa Osborne is a divorced mother and Boston newspaper columnist, disillusioned with the single men she meets and yearning for someone special. When her son goes to California to stay with her ex-husband, she decides to go on a vacation to the Cape with Deanna, her editor and best friend. While jogging on the beach, Theresa discovers a bottle with a letter tucked inside from a man named Garrett to a woman named Catherine in which he describes the heartache of losing her. The letter moves Theresa to tears, so Deanna convinces her to print it in her column, thereby setting off a surprising chain reaction: it turns out that others have also found letters by Garrett. Imagining that this is the sort of man she has been seeking, Theresa sets out to find him, following various clues found in the letters. She succeeds and discovers that, indeed, he is everything she hoped he would be, including sincere, and therein lies the problem. His profound attachment to Catherine is a serious threat to their burgeoning relationship. Sparks' tale about the obstacles people face in second relationships is sensitive, wonderfully bittersweet, and ultimately hopeful. Pat Engelmann

Unique Romance
By C. Baker
Message in a Bottle is a unique romantic story and a fine novel. It all starts when Theresa Osborne is vacationing in Cape Code and comes across - you guessed it - a message in a bottle. The message is from a man "Garrett" to his wife about his intensely felt love. Osborne, a middle aged divorcee with little romance in her own life is intrigued enough to start searching out others who may have found similar messages. As she collects them, she herself falls in love with Garrett (although she has yet to admit it to herself) and decides to search for him. She finds him in a small, North Carolina town and the romance emerges. But of course - they are such different people that problems crop up. He is a widower feeling guilty and not over his wife and a small town kind of guy. She's a big city gal with a career. But the relationship develops with ups and downs nonetheless.
Sparks is excellent in fully developing the personalities of his characters and building empathy in the reader. He has done a fine job here. If you didn't like the movie - read the book anyway. It's much better.

A tear jerker
By shimmering2light
Message in a Bottle is one incredible book. The plot of the story is whimsical and will have you dreaming that maybe someday you'll find a love as strong as these two characters in this novel.
Basically this is one sad book, and the people who rate it low, are only doing so because this book doesn't have a cheerful "happily ever after" ending. While I read the book, especially the end, tears slowly streamed down my face as I tried to understand why the story went the way it did. The fact that Garrett was able to love his wife with so much emotion, just shakes you to the core because it comes to the point of obession.
Message in a Bottle is a story about a woman named Theresa Osborne, a newspaper columnist, who finds a bottle washed up shore one day. She proceeds to read the letter inside and there a history of unforgotten love unfolds. Garrett Blake, trying to cope with the lose of his deceased wife, Catherine, writes letters to her and send them out to sea, hoping that one day they'll reach Europe.
As the story progresses, Theresa finds Garrett and they give into the emotions that are growing between them and fall in love with each other. But Garrett isn't ready to let go of his deceased wife yet, so the problem is introduced... read the story and you'll be crying but still happy at the same time.
This book teaches us about the aspect of love and how it's possible to love once more even though you think that you'll never be able to love again. And the fact that love is solid, and so much stronger than simple lust. Recommended.

A Touching Love Story
By Anna Wantz
Message in a Bottle is a remarkable book, and like all Nicholas Sparks books it is a truly touching love story that leaves marks on your soul. This particular story is about a lady in her mid-thirties, named Theresa Osbourne that had recently gone through a divorce, and now single-handedly raised her twelve year old son, Kevin. On one of Theresa's vacations away from her home and job, writing a column in the Boston Times, she goes to a beach and finds a bottle washed up onto the shore. She picks up the bottle and opens it and there is a letter inside that she instinctively reads. The letter was written to a woman named Catherine by a man named Garret, and it is a very moving and romantic letter that amazes Theresa, considering it was written by a man. Taking out the names, she decides to print the letter in her column, hoping it would touch the readers as much as it had touched her. To Theresa's surprise she gets a phone call from someone who had also found a message in a bottle from Garret to Catherine. Theresa, only wondering what a man that writes such romantic and feeling filled letters, uses information in the messages to find him. When she finally finds him, pretending to be interested in the boat he recently remodeled, gets invited to go sailing with him. Not telling Garret about the letters she had found, she continued to spend time with Garret, and the two honestly fell in love with each other. Then Theresa finds out that Catherine is his ex-girlfriend that died when she was hit by a car. Having a long distance relationship, Theresa and Garret run into a lot of problems, but with true love like theirs, they are determined to work things out.

Nicolas Sparks has once again written a novel that will grasp the attention of people all over who like a good love story. I recommend this book for everyone that enjoys romance novels.

Biblical truths for the problems we face daily.
By A Customer
I was blessed to have had the opportunity to read and experience this book. It is broken down into small chapters that allow you to quickly utilize the precepts learned over a short period of time. Mrs. Meyers brings to life many characters from the Bible, that are sometimes overlooked, to put a fresh perspective on the trials that they faced and how they relate to our lives in a modern world. An excellent book on which to base a weekly group bible study.

The Battle Belongs to the Lord
By Julie
My attention was gripped from the very first sentence and held "captive" throughout the entire book. It was well written and spoke to issues we all deal with in our desire to grow and mature in our relationship with God. This is the first book of Joyce Meyer's that I've read and I have been greatly blessed by it. I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles with fear and defeat in their lives.

Keep the devil under your feet!!
By Jesus Lover
This book is a great resource in your walk with the Lord. Too many times we try to take care of the battles ourselves and when we do we will always lose. The only way to win the battle is to let the Lord fight it for you and have complete trust in him. This book helps you give your battles to the Lord by reminding you that the battle is not yours to fight anyway and that God will ultimately win the battle. This is a great book to read if you are having problems giving your battles to the Lord.

Eleventh Insight: Don't write a book unless you know how to
By Michael Hutchinson
Redfield's books in a sentence: "Suddenly, an orgasmic rush of energy sent me whirling into a new spiritual awakening". I'm sorry, but you cannot use the words suddenly, orgasmic, and energy-level 150 times in 10 pages. Redfield's insights may be worthwhile, but I found his rudimentary style of writing to be too distracting to enjoy any of the insights. Although I do admit that the second book was written at a more advanced level than the first, I still find it hard to believe that it became so popular among so many people. Are people really that desperate for spirituality in their lives? If so, they might enjoy a book more along the lines of Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. At least Hesse knows how to tie a spiritual theme into a novel. One thing is clear, Redfield may have some very inspirational and new-aged theories, but his use of language is atrocious.

If fear is any part of your life and is creating anxiety for you, I highly recommending this experiential guide as an adjunct to The Tenth Insight. I would also recommend that you find a group with which to go thru both the book and the guide as you further explore your fears and anxieties.

BRIDE NEEDS GROOM by Wendy Markham

October 9, 2005

Amazon rating 3/5

"In this 3rd in her Chickalini family series, Wendy Markham focuses on Dominic, who was also featured in her previous Once Upon a Blind Date. Dominic is still single and travels to Las Vegas on a business trip. On the plane, he encounters the most beautiful woman he has ever met, wearing a wedding dress. He cannot stop staring at her.

Mia Calogera is on her way to elope with Derek, a man she has never met. She made contact with him through an online orchid-lovers' club. Mia is determined to get married, but not for love. She will lose her grandparents' inheritance if she does not wed by year end. Derek is her safety net to ensure that she keeps the same living standard she's had since her grandfather won the lottery. In the prologue, Mia and her best friend Lenore are told by a psychic that Mia will marry, within the year, a man whose name begins with a 'D' and ends with a 'K' sound - she thought Derek was that man. When Mia meets Dominic on the plane, she realizes that he may actually be the one the psychic predicted she would wed." Complete review at BookLoons dot com - M Lofton.

These are not great books, but for a quick beach read, these books do the trick. The redeeming feature are some of the secondary characters, which help make the stories enjoyable.

Find it at library- don't waste your money.
By Colliemo
This was the first time I have read anything from this author. And the last. The first thing I noticed about this book is that it is written in the present tense. I kept thinking of "two men go into a bar, one turns to the bartender and says..." jokes. To me, parts of this read like a play rather than a novel. The heroine is spoiled and aimless and the groom is lazy with no ambition. Apparently the fact they are both very attractive is supposed to make us forget their personality flaws. They only thing bringing them together is sex and "a feeling" and as their relationship develops into marriage sex is still the only thing they do together. Then they split up and after no contact get back together because it is "true love". They still don't know each other or like each other but suddenly it is all good. There is no sense of following a blossoming romance. The characters never progress or learn anything about each other to lead them to love. And other flaws abound. The heroine's purse is left in a rental car with her jilted first-choice for a groom. She apparently doesn't have his cell phone number or remember his email address (although that is how they met) to get her things back, so she is stranded with no money or credit cards etc. In this technology -laden day that just doesn't ring true. The blurbs describing this book sound good, the book itself just doesn't live up to the hype. Find it at a library if you really want to check it out.

Sequel to "Once Upon a Date"
By Tracy Vest
In order for Mia to continue to receive a healthy stipend from her grandfather's lotto winnings, she has to get married and settle down. This is an ultimatum, and rather than have gramps bring back a mail order husband from the old country, she decides to find one herself on the internet.

When she arrives for a flight to Vegas, with plans of matrimony, she starts talking to the man in the seat next to her, and soon she is telling him her sob story. Dominic just wants to get to Vegas, have his business meeting and do some gambling. When she propositions him to be her groom instead, he has visions of moving away from his dad, and agrees, despite having an aversion to commitment.

When they return to Queens, everyone is excited about the marriage, and Dom for one feels like a heel because it meant a lot to his family, and they were not there to share in the celebration. Despite intense attractions to each other, their lack of communicating outside the bedroom starts to strain the marriage. Will they both wake up and realize that they care for each other?

Markham's sequel to "Once Upon a Date" and "The Nine Month Plan" has all the old characters back, but this one is not quite as good as its predecessors.

Amazon.com Review
Two short novels by a couple who've each gone it alone very successfully in their previous literary efforts make for a double treat for fans of both authors--Faye, whose mysteries feature a similarly uxorious couple in Rina and Peter Decker, and Jonathan, whose Alex Delaware novels starring a thoughtful child psychologist who's luckier in crime-busting than in love are even more popular. Not as satisfying as each author's full-length efforts, Double Homicide nonetheless offers a tasty side dish for their fans, and their protagonists venture beyond Los Angeles to tread new geographical territory, too. In Boston, a popular college athlete is slain in a busy nightclub, but what seems like an open-and-shut case turns out to hinge on forensic evidence that points to a very different conclusion. Detectives Michael McCain and Doris Breton unravel the mystery in Beantown, while two other new characters, Darryl Two Moons and his partner Steve Katz, discover that gallery owner Larry Olafson's brutal slaying has repercussions that resonate far beyond Santa Fe's trendy Canyon Road. Neither of these novellas makes the most of either author's gifts at character development, which lend themselves to a longer format, but that won't stop their dedicated readers from snapping them up and savoring them until the Deckers or Dr. Delaware turn up in their next adventures. --Jane Adams

From Booklist
It's a two-for-one bonanza--two mystery novellas from a husband and wife whose separate writing careers have earned each a huge following. These stories, set at opposite ends of the country, give barely a hint as to who wrote what, providing a little tantalizing "real-life" mystery to the puzzlers on the page. "Double Homicide: Boston," the strongest of the pair, is also the grittier of the two. A city college basketball star is shot at a nightclub following a nasty incident on the court. The prime suspect is a loudmouth on the opposing team, but as detectives McCain and Breton find out, the crime isn't as straightforward as it seems. The backdrop of "Double Homicide: Santa Fe" is a tad more refined--though murder, after all, is still murder. A cutthroat art dealer is found dead, and there are plenty of suspects in his address book--including the ex-wife of one of the investigating cops. In both stories, the cops' personal lives add welcome texture to the fairly routine if still wholly entertaining plots. A diversion for the Kellermans but sure to be of interest to their respective fans. Stephanie Zvirin

Not Bad for Light, Fast Reading 3 1/2 stars
By D. Bell
I did enjoy both novels, but I must admit that they are just good reads for a doctor's waiting room, an airplane, etc. I did like the Boston story a little better, primarily because I could identify with the female officer's concern for her children. She reminded me very much of Lt. Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson on Law & Order), and, in fact, I visualized her that way. The denouement was a surprise and yet it was not unfair in the least. The Santa Fe story turned me off a little because of Michael Weems' art. I cannot believe the choice of subjects. I wasn't as fond of the detectives in this story either. However, as I said, the books are fast reading and good for passing time when you're stuck waiting.

A Bit Thin for Hardcover
By John R. Linnell
This was another Christmas present and as such, I enjoyed reading the two novellas done by the Kellermans. The book is easily read in a day. I started with the homicide set in Santa Fe and was finding it interesting until the end arrived. And that is about the way it happened. Not much explanation - some questions left hanging. I liked the relationship of the two police officers and their characters were well drawn. It was almost as though this was intended to be a full blown novel, but the author(s) ran out of steam and decided to pull the plug in the way that they did.

The Boston homicide story was clearly the better of the two, yet I thought that it also could have been drawn into a larger story if the authors had chosen to do so.

So, if you are looking for a couple of plesant little stories about homicide and have a plane ride to take or some time to curl up by the fire, I would suggest you wait for the paperback. It should be right along.

Double Homicide a review
By Donald Couture
Interesting combination of husband and wife writers. Two who dunnits for the price of one. One set in Boston the other set in Santa Fe. One involving a basketball player who first is thought has having died from a gunshot but died from a medical condition. The second story is why did an art dealer die an who did it.
