Although authors such as Randall Garrett in his acclaimed Lord Darcy series successfully melded whodunit plots with alternate universes where magic is real, few of the 20 supernatural mystery short stories in Edghill's all-original anthology rise above the mundane. Inspired contributions include Teresa Edgerton's "Captured in Silver," a nice ghostly locked-room murder tale, and Lillian Stewart Carl's "The Necromancer's Apprentice," which presents an interesting solution to the actual mystery surrounding the death of Amy Robsart, wife of Elizabeth I's favorite lord, balancing wizardry with astute deductions about the political motives of those who stood to benefit. The standout, James D. Macdonald's "A Tremble in the Air," introduces a psychic detective, Orville Nesbit, who's clearly heir to the tradition of such sleuths as Algernon Blackwood's John Silence and who deserves to live on in further tales. Unfortunately, most of the other stories rely on catchy gimmicks (e.g., a husband-and-wife sorcerer team based on Nick and Nora Charles in Sharon Lee and Steve Miller's "A Night at the Opera") rather than well-crafted puzzles. The jacket art—showing a white-bearded wizard gazing at a body outline on the flagstones of a foggy, gas-lit street—amusingly evokes the fantasy-crime blend.

The stories plunge us deep into history and fling us far into the future. The fantasy elements may put off mystery fans of the never-mix, never-worry variety, but readers who don't mind mixing things up a little, crossing over genres and back again, should have a very good time indeed. Rosemary Edghill is a prolific writer in several genres, under her own name and various pseudonyms. Her "Bast "books, witty mysteries featuring a Wiccan amateur detective, were collected in "Bell, Book, and Murder". She has also written Regency Romances and fantasy novels, including several collaborations with Mercedes Lackey ("Spirits White as Lightning "and "Mad Maudlin") and Andre Norton ("Shadow of Albion "and" Leopard in Exile").

Edghill lives in upstate New York with several cats and several Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, which she shows in obedience competitions.

Extraordinarily good anthology

It is very rare that I am able to say that I enjoyed every story in an anthology, but that is the case for this volume. Many of the stories have a humorous quality, not so much laugh out loud as being pastiches of various mundane mystery and other genres.

There is a great diversity in the types of stories. The characterizations and story-telling are uniformly good to outstanding. The works tend to be set in somewhat feudal cultures, as fantasy usually is, but others are quite modern or otherwise set in familiar times and places (if you credit the existence of magic.)

Worth reading both for fantasy aficionados and mystery fans.

Crime and the supernatural

This highly enjoyable anthology contains 20 stories by some of the best-known authors in modern fantasy (almost all female), from Roberta Gellis to Mercedes Lackey, brought together by an editor who has worked with several of them (not to mention co-writing at least two novels with the late, great Andre Norton). Despite the title, not all of the tales turn on murder (or even crime), but most do; they range from the funny (Esther Friesner's "Au Purr," in which a witch takes the form of a cat in order to learn the truth about her sister's death and watch over her young niece and nephew) to the somewhat baffling (Carole Nelson Douglas's "Special Surprise Guest Appearance By...," in which an aging Vegas stage magician meets...I'm not sure what), to the classic locked-room (Debra Doyle's "A Death in the Working," set in her MageWorlds Universe). Anyone who enjoys puzzles and the fantastical should enjoy the collection. Highly recommended.

Very enjoyable anthology, some known authors and many others I will be seeking out now. Well selected and varied. a few stories were not to my taste but others more than made up for them. Everything from Elizabethan necromancers to Victorian parrot familiars to an AU Nick and Nora Charles keep your attention. Be sure to read the insightful Afterword by Rosemary Edghill on the evolution of the Occult Detective in fiction.

Enjoyable but not passionating.

This is the second book of The View from the Mirror (after A Shadow on the Glass and before Dark Is the Moon and The Way Between the Worlds).
Yggur's army is now marching on the city of Thurkad, and after Tensor's treacherous attack of the Conclave, all parties spread in different directions.
Tensor, the leader of the Aachim, steals the Mirror and kidnaps Llian, believing the Chronicler might prove useful in his scheme to use the artifact. Since the city of Shazmak has been destroyed by Yggur's Whelm become Ghâshâd, the now homeless Aachim are forced to flee North, towards the Dry Sea.
Mendark the former magister, along with his guard Osseion, his lieutenant Tallia and the young girl Lilis try to escape through the underground network of Thurkad, which has just capitulated. With the help of Pender and his boat, they sail to Zile, an old city famous for its Great Library.
Llian believes Karan dead, but the young Sensitive woman is soon rescued from the ruins of the Conclave by Shand, and takes refuge in the wharf city of Thurkad while the mysterious old man is looking for help. Karan is terribly worried about Llian, whom she realize she's fallen in love with. Her sole idea is to deliver him from the clutches of Tensor.
Maigraith, saved by her Faellem liege Faellamor, is brought to Yggur, whom she'll seduce.
In this volume, after yet other interminable pursuits through tunnels and over seas and salt deserts, all parties converge again towards the much conveted Mirror of Aachim, for a final conflagration in the Tower of Katazza. But whereas the characters are likeable, and the story gained a little in complexity, I didn't find it very passionating or attention-catching, and in the end my mind was often wandering elsewhere.

powerful epic fantasy

Tensor of the Aachim blames the other three human species for the woes suffered by his people actually caused by his leadership. His desire is pandemic destruction at a level never seen in known history. His scheme gels when Yggur the Sorcerer destroys Thurkad, forcing the Great Conclave attendees to flee for their safety. Tensor abducts Lilan the Chronicler and steals the magical Mirror of Aachan that a millennium ago belonged to his race and reflects all it has seen. Through the Twisted Mirror, Tensor plans to eradicate all he loathes.
Karan borders on lunacy without Lilan to anchor her, but only she can find Tensor, Lilan, and the mirror, that is if her mind remains sane long enough to hold a rationale thought. She and the likes of Yggor and Shand the hermit magician will meet in a desperate gathering of the magic at a bastion long lost to time in the midst of the Dry Sea Desert with the fate of Santhenar and probably the other two orbs at stake.
THE TOWER ON THE RIFT, volume two of the "View From the Mirror", is a powerful epic fantasy loaded with numerous threads and sidebars that ultimately merge into a complex cohesive story line. An introductory synopsis of the first novel (see A SHADOW ON THE GLASS) helps provide perspective, but reading the debut volume would enhance perusing this extremely complicated book. Ian Irvine's vividly descriptive universe should go to the head of the reading lists of the sub-genre audience because the characters are multiple-dimensional, the worlds and its species feel real, and the outstanding plots majestic in scope.

The immune system is a scapegoat for a variety of ills in this wide-ranging but tendentious guide to approaching diseases like lupus, Crohn's disease, MS, and rheumatoid arthritis. The author argues that autoimmune disorders, in which a malfunctioning immune system attacks healthy tissues, are caused or triggered by environmental toxins, especially heavy metals and free radicals. Drawing on his experience treating patients for the above disorders as well as chronic fatigue syndrome and autism, he recommends a variety of unconventional regimens to purge toxins from our bodies and surroundings, including chelation therapy, herb, vitamin and anti-oxidant supplements, an organic diet free of additives and allergens, sauna and massage, and the systematic use of air and water filters. Edelson provides detailed information in chapters covering specific autoimmune disorders, but his claims of a "fantastic" treatment record for some of them rely on anecdotal case studies of diseases that sometimes go into spontaneous remission. By the tenets of "clinical molecular medicine," he claims, "I don't need to know the specific autoimmune disorder a patient has, because the label doesn't matter." Since no specific disease label need be applied, such widespread and indeterminate "symptoms" as "fatigue," "depression," "muscle and joint pain," "frustration," "sparse hair," "brain fog" and "general malaise" can be construed as signs of the immune dysfunction. While this book offers information on conventional treatments and physicians, its orientation is decidedly elsewhere.

About the Author
Stephen B. Edelson, M.D., is the founding director of the Edelson Center for Environmental and Preventive Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. He is board certified in Environmental Medicine and is recognized as one of today's leading experts on environmental toxins and their link to illness. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine and in May 1997, he received the prestigious Spectrum Award from the World Organization for Human Potential for his research on the autistic-spectrum disorders and their relationship to xenobiotic neurotoxicity. Dr. Edelson is the author of Living With Environmental Illness: A Practical Guide to Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

Excellent book

Don't let the previous review scare you. The quackwatch guys are the quacks themselves. Barrett, who heads up the quackwatch "research", is not a board certified doctor of anything and has been sued a bunch of times. The book itself is excellent and describes a treatment protocol that works. This protocol brought me back from near death when no local doctor could even figure out what was wrong with me. The protocol has also significantly helped our son who has autism. The "best" specialists told us there was no treatment for our son's autism and he would be permanently institutionalized by the age of 7. However, like many autism kids doing biomedical treatments, including those listed in this book, he has almost recovered. He's now 8 and attends a regular school where he performs on grade level. The treatments in this book work. It's definately worth a look.

Five Stars for One of the Best Books on the topics!

I want to reiterate what another reviewer already said: "Don't let the previous review scare you. The quackwatch guys are the quacks themselves. Barrett, who heads up the quackwatch "research", is not a board certified doctor of anything and has been sued a bunch of times." So true! Not only is that true, but any doctor who sets out to provide treatment protocols for patients that do not feed the bloody maw of Big Pharma (which brainwashes the masses into believing that any illness is the lack of one of their drugs!) is guaranteed to at least come under fire if not be set up to take a fall by covert measures.

Okay, having said that so that you know I've read the court files and assessed them as a complete set-up, let me now talk about the book.

This book is engaging and full of cutting edge science as well as practical advice. Dr. Edelson explains some very complex physiological systems in clear language that even impressed my doctor who said she never did understand it as well even in medical school! Not only that, but Edelson was a pioneer in a field that is now being taken up by other high profile doctors such as Mark Hyman, author of "The Ultra-Mind Solution". They are saying pretty much the same things, only Edelson said it first.

Like any other diet or health book, there is a particular focus and some of his ideas and protocols won't work for everyone. But, by and large, Dr. Edelson manages to connect things together in a very comprehensive way, and those people who will not benefit from his approach are, I would think, a vanishing minority.

One thing that struck me and convinced me that Dr. Edelson really knew his stuff was his mention of the inflamed blood vessel lumps that appear in the forearms of individuals who suffer rheumatoid arthritis. I've had these lumps for years, I have rheumatoid arthritis, and no other doctor has ever been able to tell me what those lumps are. What's more, they have begun to disappear simply from following the protocol in Dr. Edelson's book. My doctor is even willing to experiment with the anti-biotic treatment for my condition and I'm looking forward to even greater improvement than I have achieved already, and that will be something! I'm already almost 90% free of pain and my good days now far outnumber my bad days!

A HELPFUL BOOK FOR A TRYING TIME

The authors' have done an excellent job of pointing out the importance of maintaining physical, emotional and spiritual health through this trying time in a woman's life. I particularly liked the suggestions of using herbs as an alternate to hormone therapy. Hormone therapy is an individual affair that should be discussed with one's one physician and there are extreme pros and cons of hormone therapy - it is not for every woman. Herbs, if selecting the right ones in the right amounts can be an alternative but I would suggest readers consult a qualified herbologist first, rather than experimenting themselves. Some herbs, like any medication, do not mix well.
This book does contain some helpful exercises and self-assessment tests, though I did not find the tests to be terribly beneficial. The book is complete in that it covers all aspects of a woman's menopausal years; however, my personal preference on this subject is still "The Wisdom of Menopause" by Dr. Christiane Northrup. Kathy Smith's book appears to be written from personal experience, whereby Northrup's is based on qualified medical advice. Readers will need to decide for themselves which avenue they wish to follow, personal experience or medical expertise.

A Reassuring Voice

Kathy Smith has always conveyed that a healthy lifestyle includes very few quick fixes. It takes small steps that accumulate to form a healthier body and psyche. Her chapters on exercise are, as always, filled with great pictures and instructions. None of them require that you bend yourself into a pretzel or replicate moves you made in gym class thirty years ago. And her nutrition information is obviously carefully researched. Plus she takes into account "cheating." A kind and gentle approach to menopause from a kind and gentle lady.

Needed an overall menopause book but disappointed.

I was looking for a book that talked about all of the overall aspects of menopause including diet, sign and symptoms, etc. It turned out to be not much more than an exercise book for menopausal women. Don't get me wrong, good info on the exercise part but not really enpigh on the other parts. Disappointed.

I recommend this book

This is the last of 5 stand alone books that I read in a row. I had a little difficulty in keeping a few characters separate for some time. However, the plot became clear and the reading easier. I recommend this book.

Fast paced, fascinating, but a little far-fetched

You have to love Baldacci if you love suspense. As per his usual style he has created a completely gripping novel with more twists and turns than a mountain road. The characters are larger than life, but don't we all need a little escapism? And don't we all really need to belive in heros? The main character, Web London, is a tortured hero, but a hero through and through. He finds himself fighting on many fronts, even one in his own mind. And while he never knows who to trust, you know you can trust him. Even some of the not-so-good characters turn out to have a heroic streak. And there are a lot of characters to keep track of.
The plot was intricate. I have to admit I wasn't sure where it was going until very near the end. The wrap up was a little coincidental for my taste and there were times where the prose was a bit forced. Bodies litter the sidelines of this story, so it is not for the faint of heart. The motion starts on page one and never stops. The ending wraps it all up nicely and lays way for more of Web London...?
On the whole I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed it and lost sleep to read it.

Another really fine book by Mr. Baldacci. He can make even the seemingly dull subjects very interesting. Read any two of his books and you'll be hooked just like I am now. Pick them at random, but I'd suggest "The Winner" as a great start

Put A Smile On My Face

I have to say for a "Summer" read this was an enjoyable book. The premise is about three bachelor brothers. This particular book focuses on Roman. Their busy body, but good natured mother, is ready for them to settle down, get married and give her a grandchild. She fakes heart trouble to get them to feel her days are numbered.
The book is written in such an uplifting fun manner. Even though there is some deception is the book it is done in a manner that doesn't hurt anyone. There is sex in this book but it's not overly explicit.
There is also a "panty thief" sago that is entertaining even if it is pretty obvious who is doing it.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick, romantic enjoyable read.
I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

Fun, light read!

This isn't like a literary classic or anything, but it was fun and fast to read. There are going to be two more in the series and I will read them when they come out.
It is a story of a confirmed bachelor who thinking that his mother is very ill sets out to marry and give her a grandchild. He does not intend to love this woman or even live with her. Then he sees his old high school crush and his heart does flip flops and he falls head over heels in love with her. Steamy, sexy, hot, hot, hot!!!!
It is an easy read and a nice change to break up my summer reading. Fun stuff!!

Newsman and Stud Loses Bet and Finds Love

In Carly Phillips book, "The Bachelor," we are introduced to the Chandler brothers. There is Chase Chandler who gave up his dreams to run the small town newspaper when his father died. Then there is Rick, the middle brother, who was previously scorned in love and is a confirmed bachelor. Lastly, Roman is the baby who comes home from his foreign correspondent job when their mother takes ill. Little do they know that Raina plays on their sympathies by letting them believe her condition is much worse than it really is. Her fondest wish is to see her boys settled and have grandkids. The sons have a terrific idea to determine who will be the "lucky" person to fulfill Raina's dream. Roman loses or wins (depending on your point of view).
While back in the town that hasn't changed since he left, Roman starts to scout out potential wives. That's the think about small towns...not much selection. The one person he won't consider is Charlotte Bronson for the role. She was the only one who rejected him in high school. He is still confused by her actions because they had chemistry. Charlotte's father had dreams of making it in Hollywood and left the family behind to pursue his dreams. He came back after long absences only to leave again. Roman's plan is to find a wife that won't mind him traveling to far off places and then cruise back into town to be a father and husband when it's convenient. Knowing Charlotte's past, he refuses to hurt her. The trouble is when they catch up with each other, there is that same pull.
A subplot is there are burglaries going on in town and Charlotte's store is the common denominator. Rick asks Roman to help him track down the thief. The characters involved are colorful and quirky. Since this is the first book in the series, you want to meet the townspeople so you know who they are for the next novels.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It delved into the emotions of relationships in a real way. It was not overly serious but I would not call it a romantic comedy. It is similar to "Ally McBeal," in that it falls somewhere in the middle. I can't wait to start the next book in the series, "The Playboy" tonight.

About the Author
JOYCE MEYER has been teaching the Word of God since 1976 and in full-time ministry since 1980. Previously an associate pastor at Life Christian Church in St. Louis, Missouri, she developed, coordinated, and taught a weekly meeting known as "Life In The Word." Very Enlightening !

I had always wondered why I could not get past certain areas of my life. No matter how hard I tried it seemed that I was no better of today, then I was 18 months ago. I purchased Battlefied of the Mind and wow! As Joyce explained in the book, you must think about what you are thinking about. I never realized that my problem was my inability to control my thoughts. I found the part about the wilderness mentalities extremely helpful. I am a much more thoughtful person as a result of this book!

I thought this workbook would be more of a journal where you answer questions on how the book applies to your own life, but all it is is copying word for word the passages in the book. Save the money and just highlight the passages that stand out to you.
