Definitely Disappointing

While there are numerous interesting topics in this book (in particular, the characteristics of 'types' of male behavior), overall I found the book to be unsatisfying. Dr. Elmore makes little if any distinction between what is unique in terms of an African-American woman's needs than a woman of any other ethnicity (stemming from differences in black/white/other cultures). Replacing the phrase "black woman" liberally used throughout the book with "woman" leaves the reader with the exact same overall impact. Then again, maybe this says something about all of us...we have the same essential needs. As a Caucasian male who has dated women of many races, my experience has been that cultural differences can add to the communications difficulties inherent between men and women and I thought the author would at least address these issues. Since he does not, I believe African-American males will benefit more from this book.

Ho-Hum

Cardillo's book is one of good intentions, but has little in the way of helpful teaching. It is disjointed and poorly conceived. You feel like there's a deeper thought, a clear principle, or a good lesson lurking somewhere in this miasma, but you never seem to be able to grasp it. At the end of each chapter I found myself saying," What the h%$# was that all about?"

Water Meets World

Amateur kick-boxer and ex-karate student, I picked up this book looking for a little mental spice to add to a relatively sparse spiritual training regimen. Be Like Water hit the spot.

Cardillo's writing is obviously colored by the practice of Kung Fu, one of the "softer", more spiritual martial arts. Needless to say, his thoughts can't be neatly applied to becoming a more effective Muay Thai kick-boxer. But in reflecting on and cultivating the art of living, this book is thought-provoking.

Be Like Water holds a lot of great warrior-wisdom. My favorites are the sections on responding appropriately and controlling urges. Cardillo expresses very effectively the utility of economy of movement/reaction, just as he clearly explains the benefits of correctly assessing which threats to react to.

Be Like Water isn't a bible for up-coming boxers. I don't expect it to help me very much in the ring. But in trying to live the rest of my life well, I expect to recall and return to Cardillo's writing.

Everyone needs to read this book

I read "Be Like Water" because of its high ratings, and because it was recommended to me based on my other martial art-related purchases. I'm no "martial artist." I study Jujitsu, and I love it, but I've discovered the need to deepen my studies, and most teachers (as dedicated as they are) just don't have the time or opportunity (or will) to discuss the internal shaping that must take place. I suspect a lot of people find it too "new age," too "mystical." But there is nothing mystical about physics, and that is what life - and learning a martial art - is all about. Life is about energy, how we feel it, how we direct it, how we control it. Cardillo offers very helpful explanations and stories from the dojo, and from every day life experiences, to illustrate ways to focus ourselves and live at peace with all that comes at us from day to day. The Resolutions concluding every chapter offer a list of ways we can take and keep control of our intentions, our actions, and our reactions. As a student of a martial art, and as a middle-aged mother and full-time employee, I need these very practical guidelines to remain calm, flexible, and reliable. To be like water.

Fun book of quotations about and by the Great Detective!

A modern look at quotations from the Sherlockian Canon, done in an amusing and interesting way. Each group of quotes on a subject is then put under headings such as: "HIS CHOSEN AEROBIC ROUTINE," "JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS," and "PLEASE CONFUSE ME WITH THE FACTS."
The original Sidney Paget drawings are throughout the book, and the cover looks suitably Victorian/Edwardian. It's a small volume, but it contains, as the back page says: "THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOLMES."
Keep it close by, as a reference tool, or just a book to thumb through. It's worth it!

Lovely!

I like to be a really arrogant know-it-all and pretend to be Sherlock Holmes. My long-suffering friends know this (one of whom has even agreed to be my Watson, on the basis that she puts up with my arrogance, insanity, and over-analysis of everything) and hence chose to provide me with this indispensable book. After all, I need witty, pithy quotes to use after I've finished complaining that "my mind rebels at stagnation." This book serves that purpose wonderfully. It is a compilation of Holmes' funny, witty, provocative, intelligent and perceptive statements from the entire Canon. Of course, the book is in no way a replacement for the stories themselves; it is, however, a wonderful reference (it's divided into chapters, each dealing with a particular aspect of Holmes' existence) as well as a pleasurable read.

It ends, particularly fittingly, with a very famous quote (aren't they all?): the game is afoot.

The game is certainly afoot. For this is a book that plays The Game - it pretends that Holmes and Watson really existed (oops. Did I just imply the two aren't real? Of course they're real!) The introduction, written by the grandson of John Watson, claims the book to be a lost, and now found and published, manuscript. It's written with wit and humor (and a few stabs at modern academia) and is an entirely fitting complement to Holmes' wit.

The best movie of the decade!

L.A. Confidential, winner of 2 1997 Academy Awards, is a classic thriller that is completely unforgettable. The script includes characters who were portrayed by Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, Kim Basinger, (in her oscar winning performance) and Danny Devito. They all live in Los Angeles and are involved in a conspiracy in which is a mystery of who killed who? Anyhow, there are several plots to the script involving cops, reporters, and even HOOKERS THAT LOOK LIKE MOVIE STARS (Kim Basinger) I give this Academy Award winning script a superb rating that should be recommended to numerous people across the country. It's an unforgettable suspense classic you don't want to miss!

Astounding

When I saw this movie, I was blown away. Now, being a kid, I didn't really get the full effect of the movie and didn't understand some of the plot, until, that is, I bought thi Screenplay. it made a lot of things clear. And also, it tells you the stage directions, which, if you want to use a piece from this a a monologue is a whole lot easier... A few complaints, though. There are some great lines in the movie that weren't included in the book and some extra ones that you don't see in the movie. For example, Captain Dudley is not Irish! Anyway, that only matters to nuts like myself. In closing, it's a great book and is worth it. I memorized the entire movie!

The laid-back Hamish Macbeth police procedurals, set in the remote reaches of the Scottish Highlands, almost define the British cozy. A conflict running through the series, which gives a bit of contemporary zest to the plots, is Macbeth's struggles to fight against promotion, which would entail leaving the trout streams and Highland paths of Lochdubh for the crime-ridden streets of Strathbane. In this twenty-second entry in the much-loved series, a mean-spirited local housecleaner is brained with her own bucket. Local feeling runs so high against the nasty, gossiping shrew that Macbeth's suspect card is overfull. Macbeth's investigation uncovers, as usual, secrets seemingly worth defending with murder. Hamish in trouble again

Once more Hamish's peaceful life as policeman in the Scottish Highlands is disturbed by murder. This time the victim is a disagreeable cleaning lady called Mrs Gillespie. Hamish doesn't have any trouble discovering the motive, but the problem is deciding which of the many suspects could have done it. And of course he also has to cope with his usual problem of making sure no-one high up finds out what a brilliant detective he is and promotes him away from his beloved village beat. Not to mention trying to sort out his complex love-life, still dreaming of Priscilla, dithering over whether or not to marry Elspeth, and getting involved with a few other attractive women just to complicate matters.

The Hamish Macbeth novels are always fun to read, and this one has all the features of the earlier books, an ingenious plot, good characters, and plenty of humorous touches. I must admit that personally I am a little tired of Hamish's dithering over whether or not to get married, I wish he'd just make up his mind one way or the other, but this is only a minor quibble. A new Hamish Macbeth novel is always a treat.

Hamish Macbeth was a policeman in a small Scottish village. He cherished his quiet life in the Highlands and got more than he bargained for when he won Mrs. Gillespie's maid service at the church raffle. Just when Macbeth was beginning to suspect that Mrs. Gillespie was snooping around the police station more than she was cleaning, he found her lifeless body outside one of her cleaning client's home. It was common knowledge that she was a much disliked gossip, but as Macbeth investigated further, there seemed to be something more sinister lurking behind the apparently serene village scene.

As the body count went up, Macbeth not only had to deal with superiors from the city headquarters who despised him, he also had to watch his ex-girlfriend parade into town with her new boyfriend. With his personal life in a bit of a turmoil and the risk of his superiors closing down the village police station, Macbeth was glad when they finally wrapped up the murder case...or so he thought.

Although this was the 22nd installment of the Hamish Macbeth series--and I have seen the BBC productions based on the series--this was the first time I read any of the books. This was a nice easy read and the story flowed well with twist and turns in the plot. However, the writing itself was bland with no sparks in it at all. I am sure the regular Hamish Macbeth followers would enjoy seeing their familiar characters engaged in another adventure. I think this would make a good TV adaptation; however, if I were to read another Hamish Macbeth mystery, I would most likely choose one of the earlier works that made the series a success.

FYI: M.C. Beaton is the pseudonym Marion Chesney reserves for her mystery novels. Known primarily for the more than 100 historical romance novels she has published under her own name, she has several other pseudonyms: Helen Crampton, Ann Fairfax, Jennie Tremaine, and Charlotte Ward.

I love this series!!

Ms. Beaton is, bar none, the Queen of the Village Mystery, and her two long-running series prove this. This latest in the Hamish Macbeth series is just as good as any of the previous, and that's saying something since this is number twenty-two. Hamish never gets boring, and I love going back to Lochdubh to see what the locals are doing now. The things that go on in this little sleepy village, as well as the other little villages around are enough to make your hair curl. And through it all we have wonderful Hamish who appears to be sleepily pursuing his life interests, and at first, it you don't know Hamish, he appears to not know what's going on. But he's way to sharp to miss anything at all that goes on on his patch. He always manages to cover some pretty unsavoury secrets that the people that live in his area have tried very hard to keep hidden. And he usually ends up in some danger himself while he's after the truth. In this book this all happens, but Hamish also finds himself on the wrong side of a very dangerous mob head who wants to see him dead. I sure hope there are a lot more Hamish Macbeth mysteries to come yet.

Enjoyable, but not his strongest effort...

It wouldn't be October without the publication of a new David Baldacci thriller, and The Collectors is his latest for 2007. While I enjoyed The Collectors, I don't think it is his strongest effort.

The Collectors is actually two stories. In the first, the Speaker of the House and a curator at the Library of Congress are both murdered (the second is made to look like natural causes). Caleb Shaw is a librarian at the Library of Congress, and he is also a member of the Camel Club (introduced in the book by the same name). The Camel Club consists of four misfits (nearing senior citizen status) who form a secret conspiracy watchdog organization. They decide to investigate the deaths and immediately, they discover they're being followed by agents who could be FBI, CIA or NSA. The subplot involves four individual cons who launch a scheme to swindle an Atlantic City casino owner out of $30 million. The ringleader, Annabelle Conroy, becomes immersed in the Camel Club's investigation when she attends the funeral of the library curator. The closer they come to the truth, the more endangered their lives become.

All thrillers have a bit of disbelief in their stories, and The Collectors is no exception. I don't think Baldacci was on top of his game with The Collectors in terms of plot development. Plus, the ending never really resolves all the questions and is just an opening for a sequel. While good, it doesn't come close to his earlier works including Absolute Power and A Simple Truth.

A new member of the Club

The chief elements of this addition to the Camel Club series are the addition of an interesting new member and the obviously hanging ending which begs for a follow up book. That book already exists so newcomers to this series don't need to wait for the author to get a new idea, write it down or the publisher to get it into print.

In some ways, this book leaves a bit of a jagged edge to the old book tending to ignore main characters from the first in the series due to having to make room for a major new character. No fear, most of the old players return for volume three making the three initial books of this series more of a triptych or trilogy, if you will, than just three books with a similar set of actors.

Of the initial three, this book is probably the weakest relying on a rapid wrap up almost a deus de machina sort of finale than a well played out finale, yet it's not so far out (given the series is pretty far out there) that it makes for an eye roll.

The one jarring note for some must be that one of the main characters is a confidence player. Now in fiction for some reason, these are heroes but in real life they aren't. Here the only con is against a person who is portrayed as 'deserving it', but along the way, this supposed hero has cheated old folks and other vulnerable. Why the thief in fiction is so well regarded is, to me, a complete bafflement.

Sutton (Own Your Own Corporation) offers a comprehensive guide for both buyers and sellers of businesses. The book, the latest in the popular Rich Dad's Advisors series, covers important topics, including valuation, negotiating strategies, confidentiality, franchises and closing. Sutton presents the information in a straightforward manner, using case histories to illustrate his points. Chapters end with brief "Rich Dad's Tips" summarizing key points. Many books offer scenarios, but fail to explain what readers should take away. Thankfully, Sutton goes to great lengths to clarify his examples, e.g., after describing a sale with stalled negotiations and less-than-helpful attorneys, he says, "The lesson here is that if you are going to let other people negotiate for you, be certain that there are no hidden agendas.... An attorney whose motivation is to generate as much as possible in hourly fees may drag out negotiations to the point that a perfectly workable deal falls apart due to frustration and ill will." This is a solid book, though it doesn't offer much more than many others available on the topic. It will be of most help to inexperienced readers; those expecting dramatic new strategies on acquiring or selling a business won't find them here.

Good Advice

This book is great for anyone that is just starting off in the business realm. I'll assume that whose who gave bad reviews on this book are people who already have a good amount of expereince in the business world. For them this book is just too basic of information that they already know. I, on the other hand, am just starting out in the world of business. I am 21 years old and this book was perfect for me in teaching me the basics and where I need to go to get some of the information I need. This book was also very motivating for someone starting off like myself. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone that wishes to begin learning about what it takes to buy and sell a business.

Canned advice

This books offers canned advice and can be summed up as:

1. Find a good accountant

2. Find a good lawyer

3. Find a good business broker.

The three people above are your 'team' and will carry you through the pitfalls of buying a business.

Oh yes - he also spends one chapter on why lawyers are 'deal killers.'

That's it - I saved you money. Three is no further detail, only a checklist. Nothing worth $19.

You should only two Kiyosaki books: Cash Flow Quadrant and the Investing Guide - all else is nonsense and filler - regurgitating what he already said in previous. From his advisor series, the only person who fills the books with valuable information is Diane Kennedy's Loophols and Real Estate Loopholes. All other advisor books are filler and junk.

Excellent primer for the budding entrepreneur thinking of buying or selling a business. Will help the novice engage in intelligent conversation with his or her team of experts as well as with the prospective buyer or seller. If you want to get top dollar when you sell your house, you take the time to fix it up and know the market...same goes for a business. Consult with the expert as Mr. Sutton has proven to be time and time again.
