The Gold Coast, by Nelson DeMille

Welcome to the fabled Gold Coast, that stretch on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America. Here two men are destined for an explosive collision: John Sutter, Wall Street lawyer, holding fast to a fading aristocratic legacy; and Frank Bellarosa, the Mafia don who seizes his piece of the staid and unprepared Gold Coast like a latter-day barbarian chief and draws Sutter and his regally beautiful wife, Susan, into his violent world. Told from Sutter's sardonic and often hilarious point of view, and laced with sexual passion and suspense, THE GOLD COAST is Nelson DeMille's captivating story of friendship and seduction, love and betrayal.

From Publishers Weekly
What happens to a priggish, WASPy, disillusioned Wall Street lawyer when a Mafia crime boss moves into the mansion next door in his posh Long Island neighborhood? He ends up representing the gangster on a murder rap and even perjures himself so the mafiosostet lc can be released on $5 million bail. That's the premise of DeMille's ( The Charm School ) bloated, unpersuasive thriller. Attorney John Sutter has problems that would daunt even Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby. His marriage is crumbling, despite kinky sex games with his self-centered wife, Susan, who's the mistress of his underworld client Frank Bellarosa. The IRS is after Sutter, and his law firm wants to dump him. As a sardonic morality tale of one man's self-willed disintegration, the impact is flattened by its elitist narrator's patrician tones. A comic courtroom scene and some punches at the end, however, redeem the novel somewhat. BOMC main selection; film rights to Guber/Peters-Columbia.

Don't Get Too Chummy With Your Neighbors
By Antoinette Klein
This was my introduction to Nelson DeMille and I am thrilled to have discovered him. THE GOLD COAST is a fast-paced, thrilling, and highly irreverent read set in a fabled and affluent section of Long Island. Life will never be the same for attorney John Sutter and his beautiful wife Susan after the most famous Mafia don of New York purchases the estate next door.

John seems to have it all---a good profession, a quirky and sensual wife, an enviable estate---but he is facing the doldrums of a mid-life crisis and needs excitement in his life. Enter Frank Bellarosa, a man Sutter describes as "an unindicted and unconvicted felon as well as a citizen and a taxpayer. He is what federal prosecutors mean when they tell parolees not to consort with known criminals."

A chance meeting at the local nursery leads to friendship, to favors, to Sutter representing Bellarosa when he is charged for murder, and even to perjuring himself to save the Don.

I haven't read as compelling a book about the Mafia since THE GODFATHER nor such a poignant tale of longing since THE GREAT GATSBY, both novels to which this has been compared.

But it is DeMille's writing in the first person voice of John Sutter, his wickedly funny lines, his clever repartee, his upper class snobbery, his ability to capture the heart and soul of the Mafia don that lifts this book to greatness.

DeMille's relentless foreshadowing of doom builds tension with each chapter until the reader is totally caught up in the life of John Sutter, his wife Susan, and the next door neighbor who both enhances and destroys their lives. I'm sure these characters will stay with me a long time and I will often remember John Sutter saying "Mamma Mia! It shouldn't happen to a High Episcopalian."

Hilarious, wonderfully written, and a ripping read!
By Roger J. Buffington
Nelson DeMille is my favorite author, and The Gold Coast is one of his better books. This is a hilarious novel. The basic premise is simple enough. John Sutter is an upper-class WASP lawyer who lives in the most exclusive area in America, an area in Long Island known to insiders as "The Gold Coast." He has a beautiful wife, an OK law practice, looks, class, and health. All seems well. Then, the local Mafia Don decides to move into the property next to the Sutters. And so begins the tale of a mid-life crisis to beat all mid-life crises. The rest would be telling.
As is the case with many of DeMille's novels, John Sutter is a hoot. His insights into life in general, the Gold Coast in particular, and his encounters with the local Mafia Don are very funny. The novel is written in first person, not a perspective I always like, but here it is extraordinarily effective. The reader comes to know, like, and care about John Sutter and his deepening predicament. DeMille's prose is superb. The writing is clear and crisp. The storyline starts out at a leisurely pace, but it always keeps the reader's attention and interest, and the plot quickly picks up momentum. This is an absorbing and very funny story.
DeMille is one of the great novelists of the times. I do not exaggerate; many of his books in my opinion are instant classics. The Gold Coast is one of these.

I laughed, I cried...
By M. Beck
I am a recent convert to DeMille. My first book was The Charm School which I liked a great deal. It was a little predictable, but it held my attention throughout, actually getting better as I read. By the end I was eager to try another DeMille book, which is pretty high praise.
I picked up The Gold Coast based on the positive reviews I read here on Amazon.com and I'm writing to add my strong recommendation for this very entertaining and poignant novel. DeMille's description of the WASP community and mindset is hilarious and affecting. The Mafia component is less successful - solid, interesting, but not especially ground-breaking.
However, the transformation of John Sutter is amazing. I found myself constantly surprised by the depth of this book. Nothing in the Charm School prepared me for the last hundred pages of the Gold Coast. The last sentence of the novel will make you gasp.

Delivers what it promises, but nothing really new...
By Jeff Nyman
Here is one book that I am divided on. On the one hand, I can hardly claim to be disappointed since the book delivers exactly what is described. On the other hand, I am a little disappointed due to the nature of the book itself. The first thing to understand is that this is not a book of stories revolving around the "Night's Dawn" trilogy and its Future History. Rather this is basically a compendium of the people, technology, cultures, etc. of that Future History in a condensed format. That being said, all of this is available in the trilogy itself somewhere. It is not in the condensed format, granted, but it is in there. That, of course, is to be expected. However, there is really nothing extra that makes this book all that compelling of a buy. I am sure there are a few extra details here and the degree of satisfaction you will feel with those few extra details will depend entirely upon just how deeply you want to get into the Future History.
If you are a person that has trouble getting into "space opera" type stories where there are many characters, cultures, and technologies, this book might help you make sense of it all beforehand rather than learning it piece-meal via reading through the "Night's Dawn" trilogy of books. However, if you are not that sort of person my guess is you will feel that you wasted your money. (Note: I am not saying you will feel cheated. As I said, the book gives what it promises.) I gave this three stars because it is an excellent compendium to the "Night's Dawn" trilogy but I kept the last two stars simply because nothing extra was really added for those fans who might have wanted a little more. If I had to make recommendations, I would say avoid this one and read the trilogy or "A Second Chance at Eden" (which is a collection of short stories and novellas dealing with the Future History).

The Book of Spoilers
By A Customer
The Confederation Handbook is a companion volume to Hamilton's massive "Night's Dawn Trilogy", which was a trilogy in Britain, but not in the USA. It lays out the history and technology of the major cultures, discusses the planets on which the action of the trilogy occurs, and fills in a little background information.
Why is it a book of spoilers? Much of Night's Dawn consists of going through a long series of adventures to find out the quirks of Hamilton's galaxy. It is the wealth and appeal of his background, and the daring of his conceit- scifi that overtly tackles all the issues usually left to religion-- that make "Night's Dawn" so popular. With this book you get in neat summary the information that would otherwise require you to read thousands of pages of the trilogy itself. Indeed, if you read the first volume of "Reality Dysfunction" and would like to know where the story goes, you have only to read this book, skip the next four and a half volumes, and read the last 100 pages of "Naked God", and you will have the plot. So this book can be considered the Cliff Notes version of "Night's Dawn". Readers who have read and learned all the information provided in the trilogy will find little new here. Since I had read the six volumes at different times, there were gaps in my knowledge, and this book was wonderful for filling those (somehow, I missed the part where he explained the cause of the reality dysfunction itself). So I enjoyed and profited from this Handbook. Please note that the one thing omitted from the "Handbook" is the Deus ex Machina ending of "The Naked God"; readers seeking more information about that phenomenon will be disappointed.
Fans of "Night's Dawn" might want to buy this book as a reference work. It has handy sections on Voidhawk breeding, etc.
Now you can make your own decision.

Interesting But Not Critical
By Rodney Meek
First off, only readers of Hamilton's "Night's Dawn" six-volume alleged trilogy need to pick this up. So don't get confused and buy this by mistake, thinking it's for "Star Wars" or something.
Okay. When a compendium of this sort is put together, the author has to tread a fine line between blabbing out a wealth of details about every character, location, and event, or relating the barest minimum amount of information about same. If he or she takes the former tack, the assumption is that the reader has completed the epic series upon which the compendium is based and is interested in exploring the background of certain individuals or refreshing their memory about key incidents. In the latter case, the author assumes that the reader is still slogging through the series and is using the compendium to keep track of a huge cast of heroes and villains, so the disclosure of too much information would spoil the suspense.
On the whole, I prefer cyclopedias that flood the reader with all manner of minutiae and that include stuff that couldn't be crammed into the series. Sadly for me, this handbook is not such a work.
It's got a whole heck of a lot of data on the main planetary systems: Earth, Norfolk, Lalande, the Kulu Kingdom, New California, and so forth. This information includes whole wads of stuff on prominent flora and fauna, governmental systems, ethnic makeup of the population, and settlement history. There's also material on the alien races, and explanations of the Adamist and Edenist cultures.
However, the character biographies are pretty sketchy for the main dozen or so characters, and the entries for the supporting cast are only three or four word descriptions, basically right out of the Dramatis Personae sections of the novels themselves. And such material as is provided is only up to the point of the beginning of the series, so if you want complete histories of what everyone went through in the course of the saga, you're out of luck.
I was really hoping that this book would provide new insights or answer some questions (such as why Kelvin Solanki pretty much disappears forever, or why Ralph Hiltch feels he failed at the end, or the final disposition of Tolton or Kelly Tirrel or Erick Thakrar or the various secret agents). But it did not.
The handbook, then, won't really help you figure out some of the big themes of the trilogy, but it's not a bad addition to Hamilton's body of work for the ardent fan.

Amazon.com Review
It was only a matter of time before Bill Geist, the comic bard of suburban life, collided with the royal and ancient game. "Golf fever. It's serious, it's viral, it's epidemic, and," he observes in Fore! Play, "unlike West Nile no one is spraying for it." And if it hasn't thoroughly infected him, too, it's at least brought out enough writer's curiosity to spur an odyssey in search of why the game casts such a spell over so many devoted pilgrims.

His curiosity hits most of the expected stops on a beginning golfer's journey, and at times--his community night-school golf lessons, his interview at a ritzy country club, brief chronicles of trouble-filled rounds with his wife and son--he hits with enough spin to keep the humor pin-high and his narrative moving. But this is, in the end, an old story, one that every golfer has likely experienced and heard before, and Geist brings little new to it beyond his wry persona. More often than not, he winds up in a rough of his own making, reaching too hard for laughs that just aren't there. His Geistian golf definitions and tips ("Don't bend over to tee up your ball with a bag full of clubs over your shoulder or they'll spill out and make you look like Jerry Lewis") are simply silly when they're not out-and-out sophomoric. Of course, golf does have a knack for bringing out the worst in people. When Geist swings too wildly for a laugh in Fore! Play, the consequence is inevitable: he shanks it. --Jeff Silverman

From Publishers Weekly
Geist, humorist and regular CBS commentator, takes on one of the most popular American pastimes, despite his obvious skepticism about golf's appeal. Geist (Little League Confidential) resents hearing his friends endlessly discuss their latest golf outing or having to schedule his dental appointments around his dentist's games. "What is it about this sport? Is it a sport? I mean are there teams? Uniforms? Stadiums? Coaches? Cheerleaders? Hot dogs and beer? Bench-clearing brawls? Any of that stuff they have in real sports?" he quibbles. Ever the adventurer, Geist attempts to understand the widespread enthusiasm for the game by enrolling in an indoor class at a New Jersey elementary school in the middle of winter. The six lessons are just enough to get him started, and Geist goes to the driving range and then to the actual course. Disregarding his snail-paced improvement and persistent dislike of the game, he checks out the necessary paraphernalia at a Golf Merchandise Show, where he learns that there are special performance socks ("Now, how, exactly, will these socks perform for me?"), hand lotion, golf tension bands and so much more. He makes lots of suggestions for enriching the culture of golf, from playing in the carts, "polo-style," to introducing a little spirit via cheerleaders, pep bands and bonfires. Geist's amusing, inimitable style will engage sports and humor fans alike, with particular appeal for those golf widows and widowers who share his displeasure with the game. This light, delightful jab at a leisure-class sport comes just in time for the spring golf season.

If someone didn't think this book was funny.....there is really something wrong with them!!! Laughed through the whole book, actually the audio tape of book. Didn't want to get out of the car sometimes.....a little like "all things considered" on NPR. What is not funny in this Fore! Play....I don't know? Read it, listen to it...whatever....IT'S GREAT! P.S. I am not a golfer...it doesn't even matter!

Laughed till I cried!
By A Customer
Bought this book for my husband (an avid golfer) to read on a plane trip. He was lauhing so hard he was crying and passed it over to me -a nongolfer! I started to read it and I too was in tears! Bill Geist captures the everyday obsurdities of the game and serves them up in a hilarious fashion. Golfer and nongolers alike will be unable to resits the urge to laugh out loud! A funny quick read.

Shanked it
By Brian M. Ayres
I'm sorry, but am I slow? I found no memorable lines or sections that could even remotely categorize this book as laugh-out-loud funny or even giggle, ha-ha humorous. This book went absoultely nowhere, and frankly I could only make it 100 pages in before I had had enough. As a golfing male, I could relate to the experiences of Mr. Geist, but I just didn't see the humor in anything. Although fiction, read Rick Reilly's Missing Links or Dan Jenkins' Dead Solid Perfect for an understanding of what true hackers are like.

Cute, but no cigar
By J. Myrna RottenRomance
I feel like all I write lately are negative or average reviews. That may be, though, because the books I keep getting are, at best, average. Unfortunately, this was one of them. It wasn't bad, don't get me wrong. The story was interesting enough, the characters were okay. It was just kind of plodding and slow.

In fairness I should mention that I have not read the other books that are apparently in this series, so perhaps I'm missing something vital. I do get the whole plot with the treasure. That's easy enough to pick up on. In fact, the whole kidnapping premise was not hard to follow, so I don't think that was it.

The premise of Adela's failed marital attempts was funny and clever. The character of her first husband was kind and I liked him. Sorry he had to go. I liked Rob. He was sweet, honest, and loyal. Adela was a thoughtful, well developed character. But the romance between the two felt almost forced. I could see them as excellent friends, but there was no real sense of passion between them. The sex scenes were... okay. Although to be honest, Adela didn't seem to enjoy them all that much. I got no sense that it was such a wonderful experience for her, except that the author said it was.

Okay, since I'm the kind of person who does this, I'm going to give some details of things I did and didn't like. I am not spoiling things, I promise, but I am going to quote from the book, so if you dislike that, you should stop reading.

First, I find the term "fork of her legs" to be a bit... offputting. Where's her spoon? Is it with the salad tongs? Do I want to know what her salad tongs are??? Secondly, this is the kind of descriptions that you find in the sex scenes:

"Soon he was moving so quickly and so powerfully that she feared he must be hurting himself badly. But instinct and desire banded together to suppress that fear, and Adela savored the moment. When he collapsed atop her..."

That pretty much sums up their sexual encounter(s). I mean, it doesn't have to be porno-level-graphic, but where's the heat? Where's the passion? Is it with the silverware???

Then there's this. This almost blew the book for me entirely. I won't give details on who or when or what, but this particular line just... Well... You know what? I'll let you see for yourself:

"Her arms slid around him and held him tight before she relaxed back against the slope and he opened her bodice and unlaced her shift to feast on those soft breasts of hers. He imagined a child suckling them."

Really? REALLY? He's going to be intimate with her and he's imagining breastfeeding??? Look, I nursed 2 kids. It doesn't skeeve me out, I promise. But it is not sexual and romantic, it's nutrition. So: WTF. That's all I can really say about that.

But it wasn't all bad. The dialogue was fun and clever. Example:

"Don't glwoer at me, lass," Sir Robert murmered in his normal accent as the other three preceded them from the hall. "Some caperwitted dafty will draw his sword to protect you, and I'll have to slay him."

Also, the heroine, despite having been kidnapped, was not TSTL, nor did she act as if nothing had ever happened and a traumatic experience didn't effect her in any way. She was effected by it, and she was able to deal and cope with it. Rob was supportive and understanding.

All in all, it was an okay book. I wouldn't go out of my way to tell people to read it, but I wouldn't warn anyone against it.

Sweet love story with a little intrigue as well
By B. C. Wheeler
I have been reading Amanda Scotts Knights Templar series since it began with Highland Princess and now after reading the 5th book in the series I am enjoying it as much now as I did in the beginning. Lady Adela is actually a heroine that even though seemingly timid and obedient has a strength and inner steel that truly impressed me. She's been through quite a bit by the time this story starts and then through even more in just the opening chapters and it is all beginning to take a toll on her. She has gotten to a point were she no longer smiles and in her own head she fears that she is going a little crazy. Literally.

Enter the voice in the mist. A man who overhears Adela's despair one night and gives her comfort but no face to put with the voice. Once the voice gets a body and a name the story gets even better as these two well matched personalities battle danger and intrigue side by side.

I enjoyed watching Rob's love and gentle care of Adela bring her back to herself. It was like watching someone restore a beautiful artifact that has been covered in grime. He was calm and endearing in his treatment of her even when she was jumping out of her own skin. Eventually we see her smile return and she gains the courage to fight for herself.

I loved this story and can't wait for Sidony book King Of Storms!!

A treasure hunt in Scotland in the 14th Century
By Helen Hancox
Knight's Treasure follows Lady Adela Macleod, surely not a great choice for marriage. She was abducted on the steps of the church before her wedding then after the ceremony was rearranged two weeks later (once she'd been rescued by her abductor) things seemed to go OK... except that her husband keeled over and died at the wedding feast celebration a couple of hours later. Adela is normally a quiet and biddable girl, having kept house for her father and been rather a shadow to her louder and livelier sisters but the disasters of her marriages start her on a new path.

After the unexpected death of her husband, Ardelve, Adela is left in a very unfortunate position. She should probably go with Ardelve's body back to the Highlands but she barely knew him, was younger than Ardelve's own son who would have to take her in, and would probably not get on with her step-son's wife as the two would be occupying the same position, mistress of the house. Adela finds that her friends and relatives all seem to know what's best for her but she wants to make her own decisions now, rather than returning to being under her father's thumb.

It's when she's considering her options whilst having a good cry in the dark that she first talks to a mystery man who listens to her and helps her to make up her own mind. He arranges to meet her a second time in the dark where they talk again - he is a friend she can trust, she believes. She also has a pretty good idea of who he is, a Frenchman cousin to her father's fiancée. However she oversees someone plotting the death of a man who helped rescue her from her abduction and tries to intervene and it's at that point that she realises she has stumbled into a big secret and that her mystery helper might end up meaning more to her.

Sir Robert Logan is a Knight Templar entrusted with two secrets when he was young. He doesn't know exactly what these mean but he has a strong suspicion that it may lead him to very important treasure in Scotland, or perhaps something more important. Unfortunately there are other people who want this mystery treasure, including the very powerful Earl of Fife, and even more troublingly these people believe that Adela may know something about it following her abduction. Sir Robert and Adela find themselves having to work together to secure the treasure and to keep safe from the political machinations of the powers in Scotland.

Although billed as a romance this book wasn't particularly romantic. Perhaps this is a more accurate depiction of life in Scotland in the 1790s... pragmatism was far more important than emotion. Our hero and heroine evidently like each other and have some reasonable verbal sparring but this book lacked that certain something which made the romance come out from the printed page. It seemed as if the book focused more on the treasure hunt and although that was interesting it was also rather a foregone conclusion.

The writing style of this book is good with some excellent period detail, much of which showed the difficulties of life in those times. There were some stray Americanisms in speech but generally I felt that the setting was convincing and that the history was accurate. The book is let down a little on characterisation - I didn't feel that I got to know either hero or heroine particularly well and I did feel their love story was rather disappointing. This book would probably appeal more to those who are interested in the history of these times rather than who want to read a straight romance but it's still a worthwhile read.

48 Laws of Power Lite
By Briana Melissa Ford
This book was recommended to me by a friend, and he said it changed how he looks at his business. I have to say the same. I think Thick Face, Black Heart is for people who couldn't stomach 48 Laws of Power and needed something to read after Art of War. It's all about strategy, forward thinking, and making moves from there. I think every leader should read it to understand how to navigate challenges at work or in their business.

Solid Experience, Realistic Perspective
By The Book Bomber
What Ching-ning Chu has here is the quintessential self-improvement book. She speaks to issues that no one is learning in college, issues that must be brought up to the living way before experience gets to them. It is a sad, sad state of affairs that the knowledge, attitudes, and skills related to the reader in Chu's book are not realized by the majority until they run up against them in real life. Oftentimes this is too late. The material in Chu's book needs to be understood beforehand, before any life beyond school has been experienced so that students don't have to struggle and fail as much as they do. Unfortunately, few will be exposed to this material, a major failing in our educational systems.

Now, onto the book . . .

What Chu has here is not set-to-fail conditioning, mantras, chants, or daily / hourly affirmations. These are nice and may be effective to a degree, but the problem is that the core issue is left unaddressed as chants and mantras merely apply band aids. What needs to be addressed, as Chu states, is a deeper understanding of self. How's this done? Through spiritual manifestation, a going deeper to innate, core understandings (personal) that abscond with any arbitrary, preconceived, subjective notions of socially accepted standards.

What's all that mean? That people make up rules that satisfy them and often shore up personal failings or aid them more than they aid or enhance the majority.

What Chu has here is a very down-to-earth, practical, challenging work that will aid one in being successful in life. Here Chu is not just dispensing information or impractical theory but rather that which will aid the individual in being more successful in their relationships, job, life. This is not easy-fix self-help pablum, but rather practical information that takes time to master. Remember, if it's too easy, especially when it comes to long lasting, self-improvement, it's most likely not useful.

And even though she may miss on occasion, by and large she is on the mark. A must read, especially for those just cutting their teeth on their working life.

To Improve Self, First Preseve Self
By Tengu151
This is a rare and honest book, probably not for the light of heart or those retreating from reality. The principles covered within deal with a wide range of modern personal issues, as well as being applicable to business. It is a modern derivative of a Chinese warrior tenet, a philosophy dangerous to the Communist regime (and, quite possibly, to corrupt pseudo-democracy); I was surprised and thrilled that it made its way to the Western market. It's an excellent addition to such books as Sun Tzu's ART OF WAR, Musashi's BOOK OF FIVE RINGS, Robert Ringer's LOOKING OUT FOR NUMBER ONE, Napoleon Hill's THINK AND GROW RICH and Fredrick Lovret's THE WAY & THE POWER. It should be a reference in every military academy, in every dojo or kwoon, as well as in business courses. Personally, over 15 years after buying it the first time, I still think it good enough to purchase again; it's that valuable to me.

About the Author
JOYCE MEYER has been teaching the Word of God since 1976 and in full-time ministry since 1980. Previously an associate pastor at Life Christian Church in St. Louis, Missouri, she developed, coordinated, and taught a weekly meeting known as "Life In The Word." After more than five years, the Lord brought it to a conclusion, directing her to establish her own ministry and call it "Life In The Word, Inc."

Now, her Life In The Word radio and television broadcasts are seen and heard by millions across the United States and throughout the world. Joyce's teaching tapes are enjoyed internationally, and she travels extensively conducting Life In The Word conferences.

Joyce and her husband, Dave, the business administrator at Life In The Word, have been married for over 35 years. They reside in St. Louis, Missouri, and are the parents of four children. All four children are married and, along with their spouses, work with Dave and Joyce in the ministry.

Believing the call on her life is to establish believers in God's Word, Joyce says, "Jesus died to set the captives free, and far too many Christians have little or no victory in their daily lives." Finding herself in the same situation many years ago and having found freedom to live in victory through applying God's Word, Joyce goes equipped to set captives free and to exchange ashes for beauty. She believes that every person who walks in victory leads many others into victory. Her life is transparent, and her teachings are practical and can be applied in everyday life.

Be blessed and read this book.
By colleen
I love this book. I learned a lot about how to be more at peace and to trust in the rock instead of relying on the flimsy flesh. Also I learned to not complain which is unbelief, but rather be thankful and full of God's grace. I now believe God's grace can dwell in me because I put more faith and trust in Him. My life has become more peaceful as I learn to be more like Jesus and allow His grace to dwell in me. I learn more each day as I read and re-read this book. This book is full of wise and profound ideas that can change your life as it did mine. Joyce Meyer is a very smart and wise person who helps many people to learn and grow from the Word of God. Thank you and be blessed by reading this any other books by this author.

If not for the grace of God
By NHimByHim4Him
If you do not know about the grace of God, this book will change your life! Understanding and receiving the free gift of Grace(power and ability) enables us to continue on in the area where most of us would give up.
Very timly because my husband is now in Hospice care with major COPD and I hold fast to the Grace of God to go through each day.
It is amazing how the teachimg in this book leads to the point that we can not make it without Him.
Five of us women are doing this study at our church. There is an 80 year old woman that came in the first week and said, the first paragraph blew her mind. I am so amazed at no matter how old we get that God is never finished leading, teaching and guiding us into His wonderful provision,
If you are struggling and things seem impossible, this is a must read book.

From Publishers Weekly
Scottish policeman Hamish Macbeth tries to avoid a dreaded promotion while solving assorted crimes and crossing swords with pretty reporter Elspeth Grant in his episodic 18th outing (after 2002's Death of a Celebrity). Macbeth knows something is amiss in the village of Stoyre, because the residents have become even more religious and closemouthed than usual. Discovering and rooting out the cause will cost him dearly. All Macbeth's talents are on display as he performs a heroic rescue, outwits some crooks and meets violence with violence. For all his nonchalance, the laconic Macbeth does his best to protect his people and preserve his way of life among them. Beaton fans will rejoice.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-The village of Lochdubh,in the Scottish Highlands, seems to be peaceful enough, but Hamish Macbeth, the local policeman, keeps uncovering criminal activity almost by accident. There is something fishy going on over in the isolated village of Stoyre, too. With a clear-eyed understanding of people and an uncommon degree of common sense, Macbeth solves these riddles almost effortlessly. His real problem is not crime, but avoiding promotion; each time he catches a wrongdoer or saves a child, he comes to the attention of his superiors, who feel his talents are wasted in Lochdubh. But his life there, with its cottage police station, his dog, his hens and sheep, and an attractive new journalist on hand, suits Macbeth very well. And though the villagers think him lazy and unambitious, they don't want to see him go, either, as they would lose their police station if he were transferred. The trademark charm of the series-quirky humor, eccentric characters, and dark overtones-is in full swing here; fans will be well pleased, and readers new to Lochdubh can enjoy this as a stand-alone volume.

From Booklist
Beaton adds a new twist to the standard murder-in-a-village plot. Something strange is happening in the quiet fishing village of Storye. A pervasive air of evil seems to linger over the cottages and the kirk of this unremarkable hamlet in the Scottish Highlands. Determined to expose the reason why the taciturn local residents are actively discouraging tourists, quirky Constable Hamish Macbeth decides to vacation in Storye for a few days. Leaving his comfortable home base in Lochdubh for more primitive digs up the coast, he himself becomes the victim of foul play. When an elderly woman is seemingly frightened to death by an inexplicable apparition, Hamish must uncover a secret the entire town is dying to protect. In addition, the less-than-ambitious Macbeth does his best to avoid a promotion after he solves a string of smaller mysteries artfully interwoven into the main plot. Another delightful installment in a perennially entertaining series. Margaret Flanagan

A Delight!
By Dr. Cathy Goodwin
Fans of Hamish Macbeth will rejoice! Hamish is back, slightly perturbed by stories that his adored Priscilla will be marrying someone else. He knows they're unsuitable -- but he misses her.
Tall, red-headed Hamish continues to attract women, however, and the local reporter Elspeth has been showing some interest. With her help, he digs into a series of cases that only loosely relate to one another.
A nearby village seems caught up in a sinister spell. A lovely young wife seems to be abused. Residents check into a local nursing home and some seem to check out awfully fast. And villagers report some mysterious action along the jagged coastline.
Hamish loves a mystery but this time his skill may get him the reward he doesn't want: a promotion to a big-city police force, where he'll be lost in the crowd.
Nearly every character in the series -- as well as the reviewers -- call Hamish unambitious, but I think he's a man who's got everything he wants, and he knows it. And on some level, he seems to know he's not destined for marriage (thankfully -- the series would never be the same) and takes comfort in his beloved dog, Lugs.
It's easy to dismiss M.C. Beaton's books as light -- and they are -- but she's a solid writer. She creates characters in a sentence or two and even gives them some depth. Her characters have self-defeating flaws as well as heroic virtues. Her books are small but you get a real sense of people and place -- the result of tight, careful writing. On page 233, we learn how Hamish acquired Lugs -- in 3 sentences. Some writers would need 3 pages.
Let's hope we see a few dozen more volumes from this prolific and gifted author.

It's SUPER Hamish!
By Mamalinde
No our highland hero doesn't don a cape and tights, but with as many crimes as he's solving he is achieving superhero status, with his devoted LUGS as his faithful sidekick. This time the irrepressible M.C. Beaton provides a delightful deviation from the formula of bumping off the most obnoxious character, and gives us lots of mystery and mayhem for the buck - but will an entire village die? And how to prevent a promotion that would send him away from his beloved Lochduh? With cunning, an offbeat attitude and a willingness for unorthox methods, he dances about the plodding Blair and Anderson and pulls numerous surprising solutions out of his hat. But weighing heavily is the peculiar air of the seaside town of Storye. Weighing almost as heavily is Hamish's luck with women. Will Priscilla really marry? Is Hamish in danger of cradle robbing? Will he ever give the right signal to the rather bizaare lady reporter? Is he really involved with his married admirer? With equal parts of tea and whiskey, Hamish manages to be the unluckiest - or luckiest? - Superhero of them all as the clock ticks for the Village of Storye.
Let me also say that the cover is a departure, and one that makes the reader eager to crawl right into the book.

It's hip to be square
By H. Schneider
Greetings to the Ozarks, and thanks for recommending a delightful little ethnic cop series!
Hamish the hero is a village cop in the Scottish Western Highlands. He doesn't drink. He seems to like women, but somehow doesn't seem to handle it well. He is good at his job, but likes it so much he fears promotion more than anything in the world. Maybe apart from girls who don't dress properly. So he manages to avoid promotion by artful screw-ups, which don't damage the cases. His cases come at us by the half dozen.
Frankly speaking, that is why I deduct a star: the cases are too brief. Hamish hardly settles down to working at them and thinking them through, and there, bingo, they are solved already. Like the murderous nursing home, which is a case that probably interests a few people: it should have been developed more carefully, not with the short attention span approach of a pre-prime-time episodical. Or the insurance fraud case: Beaton doesn't even try to let us watch Hamish solve it; we just have to believe it, there is no indication of what kind of proof he found in the safe of the dealer.
But it is fun. Pity for Elspeth, had she worn different shoes, it might have worked.
