Ok for romantic suspense, but it didn't stand out from the pack. I wanted to be a little more surprised or delighted.

While in the U.S. she receives notice that Miguel's adoption papers are ready. Jordan plans to return to Venezuela alone to get him.

Solomon's wife took off with his one-year old son Silas 5 years earlier. He hasn't been able to find Silas. Recently his wife's sister contacts him and says his wife is dead and the sister has Silas. Solomon is ecstatic to finally get his son back. When he discovers Silas can't read, he hires Jordan to teach Silas before school starts. Jordan and Solomon start to fall for each other. She does not tell him she is planning to return to Venezuela.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
This was pretty good, but it felt like other romantic suspense novels. Nothing really surprised or delighted me. It was ok, but I'm probably not going to try the next book in the series. I was expecting more interesting things to develop while in Venezuela. The return trip to Venezuela was shorter than I expected.

I really liked this one. But, pay attention. There are a lot of people in here. You have to keep track of who goes with who. Each with their own story. But they all kind of meld together though.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. John Dortmunder, deadpan burglar extraordinaire, leads a cast of marvelously twisted supporting characters in his stellar 12th outing from MWA Grandmaster Westlake (after 2004's The Road to Ruin). Arnie Albright, a fence so obnoxious his family "intervened" and sent him to Club Med in hopes he'd become more likable, has returned from the resort minimally improved, but having met the man of his dreams—Preston Fareweather, a millionaire who's as comically distasteful as Arnie and who, more importantly, plans to be away from his art-filled New York penthouse indefinitely, on the run from hordes of furious ex-wives. Albright calls in Dortmunder and his pals to take advantage of Fareweather's absence. Meanwhile, Dortmunder has discovered that a New Jersey branch of the mob has been systematically taking over O.J. Bar & Grill, which traditionally hosts Dortmunder's business meetings. While Dortmunder plans the penthouse burglary and tracks down Raphael Medrick, failed manager of the O.J. and compulsive creator of crummy music, Fareweather uses women and lolls on the beach. Events unfold in a delicious sequence, and every step is complemented by great writing, right down to the hilarious exchanges between the regulars hanging out at the O.J. (Apr. 18)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Westlake is in fine form in this twelfth comic caper (after 2004's The Road to Ruin) featuring hapless burglar John Dortmunder and his crew of irrepressible ex-cons. This time around, the bumbling lawbreakers (including mildly offensive fence Arnie Albright and fireplug of a thug Tiny) plan to rob the Manhattan penthouse of billionaire reprobate Preston Fareweather (the smug financier is hiding out at Club Med in the Caribbean, bedding young lovelies and desperately trying to forget about his five ex-wives). But when the motley entourage gathers to discuss the heist, they're confronted with the grim reality that their longtime meeting place--The O. J. Bar & Grill--is being squeezed by the Mob. Mayhem ensues as Dortmunder must divide his abbreviated attention span between scoring the booty and saving the pub. A Mystery Writers of America Grand Master and author of more than 50 books (including hard-boiled offerings written under the pseudonym Richard Stark), Westlake renders characters that are delightfully askew. The Mafia types are "swaggering chunks of veal in Day-Glo shirts" and Fareweather's latest bikini-clad bimbo walks with "all her parts in gentle, persistent pulsation." Crime may not pay, but the adventures are always rich in the company of Westlake's men of steal. Allison Block

Amazon.com Review
It seems right that the lovers in Niall Williams's As It Is in Heaven hail from Italy and Ireland, those sentimental favorites among nations. Williams won kudos and laurels, fans and fame for his first novel, Four Letters of Love, and his second finds him once again illuminating a simple love affair with his own special brand of fine and even brave mawkishness. Dubliner Stephen Griffin, though possessed of a "thin and long" body, is stunted emotionally by the loss of his mother and sister in a tragic car wreck. That is, until one evening he ends up at a tiny concert hall in County Clare, listening to the Venetian beauty Gabriella Castoldi play the violin. Williams writes with fairy-tale breathlessness of the audience: "The room was balmy with delight. And when the people sat again for the slow and romantic melancholy of the Puccini, they were pillowed on a deep and heartfelt gladness.... Stephen looked at the woman whose name he did not yet know and his heart raced." Such mauvish passages abound. Here is an author who never met a bold pronouncement on the subject of Love that he didn't, well, Love. At one point, for instance, Stephen "heard the victory of Love over Death." What makes Williams's writing work--to the degree that it does work--is the way his fuzzy, myopic generalizations are coupled with keen observation: "Stephen danced like a man who had been given wooden legs. They flew out in sharp angles and measured air like a pair of pincers." A stack of suitcases is "an Italian hilltown." At its best, this gentle magical realism reads like Mark Helprin without the irony. And like Helprin, Williams is in thrall to the glamour of geography. Stephen and Gabriella pursue each other through Clare and Kerry to Venice and back. The course of true love never did run smooth, but the bumps here prove none too discouraging. --Claire Dederer

From Publishers Weekly
Williams, a gifted Irish writer, was known only for nonfiction until his first novel Four Letters of Love reaped a chorus of praise (including a PW Best Books accolade) a couple of years ago. Now he has tried to repeat the trick, but unfortunately the freshness that leaped from the pages has become mere practiced calculation. His hero, Stephen Griffin, is a dim young man declining into premature senility as a history teacher, whose life is transformed by the rather improbable arrival of a beautiful but deeply unhappy young Italian violinist, Gabriella Castoldi, to play a concert at a little West Ireland hotel. Griffin is struck dumb with passion; since symptoms of magic realism abound, smells of white lilies and a general glowing aura convince those around him he is in love. Gabriella, emerging from an unhappy affair, decides to stay on in Ireland; Griffin meets her again and they have a fling; she goes back to Venice and finds she is pregnant; he follows but cannot find her; she comes back; finally, they carry out the wishes of an old blind seafarer (shades of Under Milk Wood's Captain Cat) and build a beautiful little music school by the sea. Williams is a felicitous phrasemaker, and he conjures up some lovely poetic images of weather and seascapes. Passages about the ineffable beauty of music and the emotional impact it can have are touching. But the sense of delighted surprise that was so constant in Letters is notably absent; the story is far more rigidly structured, and the characters, from Stephen's poor dad dying of cancer and trying to give his money away, to a chirpy lady who keeps a greengrocer shop and knows what fruits to sell for all ills of the heart, are tired clich?s. There are pleasures here for those who enjoy the equivalent of a beautifully photographed, sad movie, but Williams had seemed capable of much more. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates; author tour.

In the best of the Irish tradition
By Voracious
In the best of the Irish tradition, Niall Williams creates a captivating tale of tragedy and triumph in "As It Is In Heaven." The Irish countryside comes alive, the weather swells and broods, and the intensity with which the characters -- the characters! -- pursue their fates leaps off the page.
There is much to identify with here, and an overarching lyricism to how it is presented.
You will not regret joining the many who have loved this book!

An Old-Fashioned Love Story
By A Customer
"As It Is In Heaven" is my favorite Niall Williams book. Part of the reason it is my favorite is the fact that it takes place in Ireland and in Venice...two of my favorite places in the world. And Ireland and Venice are perfect locales for this story with its distinctly fairy tale quality. There is magic in "As It Is In Heaven" and it is definitely Irish magic.
The characters in this book are all emotionally and spiritually damaged, but then who isn't? Still, Philip, Stephen and Gabriella seem to be a little more damaged and vulnerable to pain than are most and they really come to life in this book. Williams does a superb job of baring their souls and letting us share in their emotions.
Philip Griffin is a man who blames himself for the death of his wife and young daughter many years ago (although he is blameless). Stephen, his son, now thirty-two, was raised and loved by his father, but it is clear that the loss of his mother has affected him deeply. He is a man who knows "the fine skills of walking in empty rooms and being aware of the ghosts." Although the story isn't predictable, its theme is clear: this is a story about the redemptive power of love, the power of love to heal, to make whole.
Stephen feels his life begin to heal when he meets the beautiful Venetian violinist, Gabriella Castoldi. Gabriella is a women who is fighting ghosts of her own. An "expectancy of grief" hovers over her at all times; it is so powerful it even affects those with whom she interacts.
This is a story that could so easily have fallen into the very maudlin. And sometimes Williams does give in to the temptation to write a little over-the-top. Love doesn't heal all wounds; it's no magic panacea of beauty and poetry and it can sometimes cause more problems than it solves. This is something Williams seems to want to forget.
Williams rescues (and balances) his story, however, with insight into the human soul that is heartbreakingly accurate, achingly perceptive and beautifully wise. And, sometimes these insights come from unexpected sources, making them all the more believable and welcome.
The fey, fairy tale quality of this book will no doubt draw some readers in while causing others to discard it as "too romantic." I think I fall somewhere in between. Love doesn't solve all problems, love can't endure against all odds, yet love is the force that drives the universe and gives meaning to our lives. I found I was able to forgive Williams' ventures into the overly-lyrical and enjoy "As It Is In Heaven" for the beautiful love story it is.
Williams' prose is very lyrical, very poetic and very romantic, but this book is still exceptionally well-written. And sometimes, a very romantic story is just what I'm looking for. Although I don't believe love can conquer all, I certainly believe in its healing and redemptive powers.
I don't think there's an author alive who writes of the pain and beauty of love with quite the magic of Niall Williams. If you're in the mood for an old-fashioned love story, one that will make you laugh and cry and sigh, then you really can't do better than "As It Is In Heaven." Leave reality behind when you enter this magic world; just savor the book and let it become a part of you.

Everyday Enlightenment

This book is awesome! It has a common sense appeal as you read each gateway. In each gateway, he helps you to look at yourself with a new self awareness, but in a non-judgemental way. It's a "keeper" and "re-reader"!

Practical and gentle suggestions for a spiritual life
By Tim Burness
For anyone interested in walking and talking a real, practical spirituality on a day to day basis, this is an excellent book. Millman's style is gentle and holistic, and reads a bit like a modern update of the excellent "You'll See It When You Believe It" by Wayne Dyer. This is very much a compliment!
Practical suggestions for physical, financial, mental, emotional and spiritual personal development are featured throughout. These are divided into twelve "gateways", beginning with recognizing your self-worth and ending with living your daily life as a spiritual practice in itself. The chapter on managing your money I found very useful when developing my own business as an astrologer. His treatment of sexuality, an area not always covered so openly in books of this kind, was another highlight. "Illuminating Your Shadow" is a balanced consideration of the dark side of anyone attempting to live a more spiritual life. Compassion for ourselves and others is continually emphasized in this section, as elsewhere.
Millman has used a wide range of quotes to support his ideas, contributions coming from Aldous Huxley, Miss Piggy and St. Augustine to name a few. My favourite is from Christopher Morley:- "No man is lonely while eating spaghetti; it requires so much attention".

Last in a long line of long-suffering women, once-divorced, once-widowed Soveida Dosamantes reflects on her 30 years as a waitress at the El Farol Mexican restaurant. Looking back, she hears a rich chorus of Latino voices whose touching, funny and sage advice shows her how to celebrate her true love and her true self.

From Publishers Weekly
Employing a variety of techniques-unattributed dialogue, stories within stories, passages from term papers and a waitressing manual-Chavez's accomplished first novel weaves the interlocking histories of the Dosamantes clan and the fictional New Mexico town of Agua Oscura. But the author, a playwright, actress and story writer, seeks to be more than a compiler of earthy, colorful tales about love, marriage, death, trailer parks and pickup trucks. Here is an updated Pilgrim's Progress with a Chicana feminist twist: Chavez follows the spiritual journey of her narrator, Soveida Dosamantes, who grows from a shy fearful girl to become a vulnerable, obliging waitress and, finally, a forceful woman ready to make difficult choices. Her highly readable style effortlessly mixes Spanish and English in a way that won't jar the monolingual reader ("May [the Virgin Mary] spare you a drunken man... smelling of frijoles and beer. Dios mio el gas!"). And if there is an occasional excess of sentimentality, there is never a dull moment in this rich polyphonic novel. 25,000 first printing; BOMC and QPB selections; author tour.

From Library Journal
Soveida Dosamantes has mastered the art of serving the Catholic Church, restaurant patrons, and relatives. Growing up Latina in the predominantly Mexican town of Agua Oscura, New Mexico, she is reared by a mother and grandmother who enforce the Mexican tradition of serving husbands and God. Once living on her own, however, Soveida matures into an independent woman, empowered by courses in Mexicana studies at the community college, several lovers, and her co-workers at El Farol Mexican Restaurant. Telling the stories of a multitude of people, all of whom teach Soveida something about life, love, and happiness, Chavez has written a book about growing up with a double heritage and learning to shed the constraints of tradition and fear. Chavez rivals such literary counterparts as Sandra Cisneros in describing the Mexican American's struggle to find solace in American society. Highly recommended for libraries with Latin American and women's studies collections, and a definite plus to most fiction collections.
--Lisa Degliantoni, "Library Journal"
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
In this exceptional novel composed of one luminous vignette after another, Ch{ }avez weaves a multifaceted portrait of Soveida Dosamantes, professional waitress and writer, former wife of one man, widow of another, and friend to all "women who serve." Although an expansive cast of characters inhabits Ch{ }avez's vivid tale, it is the remarkable Soveida who commands the pivotal position of narrator. For Soveida and the women surrounding her, men never seem to hang around very long. But even though things are not always easy, these women--young and old--speak volumes about life, love, and survival. This book merits a place in all fiction collections because of the profound respect and understanding of Chicano culture communicated, but more so because a meticulous storyteller has written a mesmerizing gem of a novel. A Great Book to Read
By Diaspora Chic
With school and all in the way, I manage to find time to read the book during bus rides. This is a beautifully written story about the Mexican-American women who struggle with thier identity and themselves. Soveida Dosamantes, the narrator of the book, daughter of Dolores and granddaughter of Mama Lupita, is an independent twice married woman working as a waitress at a restaurant runned by a Mexican-American who has little connection to his culture.
She deals with the men in her lives beginning with her father, who cheated on her mother constantly; her brother Hector, who marries a woman because she's pregnant, yet is involved with another woman; her first husband Ivan, who cheated on her with the town slut; Veryl, her Anglo husband who commits suicide; J.V., the professor who buries his head in academics; and Tirzio, the man she is in love with but is married.
Ms. Chavez's novel is moving describing how each woman dealt differently to their family situations, community and themselves. In addition to Soveida and her family, the other characters make the book an interesting read.

If you like John Steinbeck, Oscar Lewis, Upton Sinclair, J.D. Salinger, William Shakespeare, and Socrates, and even if you did not like any of these authors, you'd still adore and love author Denise Chavez. Her novel "Face Of An Angel" to some readers might be a 'chisme', a gossip. To others, however, it will be a brave and gallantly told tale of life in the town of Agua Oscura.

If you take a tablespoon of John Steinbeck, a teaspoon of Oscar Lewis, a pinch of Upton Sinclair, a pinch of William Shakespeare, and sprinkle some of the philosophy of Socrates, you'd come up with the writing style of Denise Chavez.

Her style places the reader in that time and places the reader has never been to and much less spent time on. The reader becomes engrossed, mesmerized, captivated, spellbound, enthralled, and fascinated by the tales, or chismes, the author spins like a yarn of silk for the reader. Denise makes the reader feel the reality of life in a way the reader has never touched life's reality before.

Denise Chavez is not only witty, clever, amusing, humorous, entertaining, sharp and funny, but she is understanding, compassionate, empathetic, quick-witted, and yes, tragic as well with the meaning of life and writing.

There is not enough stars to evaluate Denise Chavez' "Face Of An Angel." I strongly recommend her novel. I guarantee you will not put the book down until the end, and then you will be asking for more.

absolutely loved it, can't wait to read it again
By Juli
An awesome book. Written in an accessible, almost conversational, but also a very poetic style. Chavez explores a lot of feminine themes -- what does it mean to be a modern woman? how does that relate to familiar and cultural traditions? what role should our bodies and sexuality play in our vision of ourselves? should we stay connected to traditional maternal wisdom (an unmentioned mother goddess, I suppose)? Chavez also takes on the role of sociologist in rendering the Mexican-American community, it's people, culture, and problems. Overall an amazing book. I carried it with me day and night, stealing every moment I could to indulge in the pleasure of reading it.

The Final Country, by James Crumley

Milo Milodragovitch is back in Texas, running the bar of his dreams and trying to do a little private investigating on the side. His relationship with his woman is on the rocks, especially since he had an overnight fling with Molly McBride, the classy dame with the taste for single malt scotch. Now, Molly's persuaded Milo to help her search for and bring to justice the lowlife who raped and murdered her sister. What appears to be a simple stakeout turns hideously violent when it's discovered that Molly's prey is no ordinary miscreant, but a whirl-wind of brutality with major political connections. Soon Milo is calling on connections of his own, including shady computer geniuses, taciturn bodyguards, underground crank manufacturers, and his old pal C.W. "Sonny" Sughrue, in a plot that takes him from sweaty, dusty Mexico to the subzero mountains of Montana.

Amazon.com Review
It's been too long since James Crumley's last Milo Milodragovitch adventure, but the wait was worth it. The Final Country is a fully satisfying read with plenty of action, even more sex, and superb characterization.

"A chase after money and revenge had brought me to Texas, and a woman had kept me here," Milo explains. But trying to salvage a love affair, keep his PI business going, and run a tavern (whose real business is laundering drug money) hasn't kept trouble from following Milo--or maybe it's the other way around. When a man kills a drug dealer right in front of him, Milo can't help but track the shooter down, if only to keep the Texas cops from railroading him into the death chamber. Soon one beautiful woman frames Milo for the murder of a well- connected Texan, and another one with ties to both killings disappears, setting up the intricately plotted action of this fast-paced thriller.

Crumley's narrative gifts and poetic talents set this crazy-funny mystery apart. Milo is a consistently interesting protagonist, especially here, as Crumley depicts him in the fullness of middle age, a hard-boiled, bruised, and battered dick who, despite all evidence to the contrary, still believes in the redemptive powers of love--not to mention liquor, cocaine, and sex. Texas may not be Milo's natural habitat, but it's a big enough backdrop for his unique talents, and for Crumley's, too. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
PI Milo Milodragovich turns a very hammered 60 years old in this energetic, poetic, violent and extremely funny ride, which comes within a belly laugh or two of equaling Crumley's absolute masterpiece, The Last Good Kiss (1978). "The rumors of my near demise haven't been exaggerated," Milo says, "but unfortunately for my enemies, I'm not dead yet." After finally collecting his long-deferred family inheritance (plus a huge cache of loot from the bad guys) in Bordersnakes (1996), the author's previous novel, he seems ready to settle down in Texas, the state with "more handguns than cows." He has a woman he may love, and now owns a bar. Milo, however, just can't let go of investigative work. As he tracks down a wandering wife whose implants have made her the pool-playing terror of many roadhouse, he is on the scene as a gigantic black man named Enos Walker tears into a dive and kills a drug dealer. When Milo asks a couple of questions about Walker, bullets start coming his way, sending him on a cocaine-and alcohol fueled trip for answers that may be 20 years old, hidden behind deception and sex and death, going from Texas to Las Vegas and Montana. Plot twists and details seem loose and easy, yet every thread is sewn tight as a hardball. This is a brilliant achievement, with Crumley returned to his full powers, seeming to say with each assured sentence, Yeah, I'm an old dog, but I still wag the baddest bone. (Oct. 23).

From Library Journal
Even Crumley's reliably sharp writing can't save this novel from its unlikable hero and convoluted plot. P.I. Milo Milodragovitch (Bordersnakes), usually a self-centered and reckless type, spends the entire novel trying to save a fugitive from being unfairly treated by the Texas justice system. Throughout, Crumley provides a steady stream of fighting, dull conversation, and shady but colorless characters. Milo's vices certainly make him a distinctive character in P.I. fiction, but they also make him difficult to care about. Not only is his sex-and-drug lifestyle unbelievable but it quickly becomes monotonous. This is certainly not one of Crumley's better efforts. Still, his wit, his descriptions of the Texas landscape, and the prose in general an excellent example of classic hard-boiled fiction make it worth consideration by public libraries.

Nothing to be proud of
By Michael Dixon
There was a time when I thought James Crumley would become the greatest writer the mystery genre ever produced, and achieve what Chandler only attained after his death, that is, literary respectability and recognition of his talents as a great novelist of contemporary fiction. Crumley had all the gifts a great writer needs - an engaging prose style, finely constructed plotting and a unique voice. And in his earlier book, The Last Good Kiss, he spun all those elements into a story that was intoxicating in it's brillance, a book truly worthy of comparison to the best of Chandler. But thats been more than 20 years ago now and Crumley has neither continued or built upon his earlier promise of greatness. Sure, he can still write a line so good so as to make your heart skip a beat, and he can be funny as hell, but it's in fits and starts and nothing ever comes of it all. Somewhere, somehow ,the discipline that could craft a book such as the Last Good Kiss has gone and we are left with the spectacle of a now undiciplined talent repeating himself to a lesser and lesser effect each time. If you want to read the real Crumley, read The Last Good Kiss or The Wrong Case and see what you've been missing, but don't read The Final Country - it just makes those of us who admired his earlier work sad.

Another Crumley Masterpiece
By genews
Crumley is back (finally!)with another magnificently intricate tale featuring Milo Milodragovich, the crusty, humorous, cynical, superbly violent, but now aging, P.I. from Montana who migrated to the mythical Gatlin County, TX (suburb of Austin)in the "Bordersnakes" (1996) novel. Milo (now wealthy)is still all-cattle-and-no-hat as he sorts out a Texas size imbroglio of murder, lust, greed and betrayal.
"Final Country" is another Crumley treasure. You'll find there the lyrical quality to rival Chandler, the grit to rival Hammett, violence beyond Stark or Lansdale, and the unique Crumley philosophy of individualism and virtue. Crumley is one of the very few authors working in the P.I. genre who produces literary works with the quality of detail that will pleasure the reader not only on the first reading, but also on re-reading or even re-re-reading.

Believe it: The legend lives and he's on his game!
By A Customer
Ask most of the young crime writers in America who they revere and the name Crumley will fall off almost every tongue. In a genre that rewards the fast and the dirty, where publishers throw money at sloppy writing and half-assed plotting, Crumley is a beacon of quality and thoughtfulness. The man cares about the language. What a radical notion for a writer of detective novels. In The Final Country, as in any of his books, you'll find sentences both sleek and rangy, but always beautiful, thought out, worked on. And those sentences come together to form a Voice as consistent and engrossing as any on the contemporary scene - inside or outside the genre. But wait, as the pitchmen say, there's more. You also get a plot as ingeniously assembled as Lamborghini Diablo. A red one. That runs on nitroglycerin. And this books moves as fast as the Diablo. But don't worry, Milo's got his arm around you the whole way, rapping up a coke-fueled storm that, should you listen, will give you a few gem about how an ethical man lives in a foul world. Listen: as long as James Crumley can draw breath and pick up a pen, TV just doesn't stand a chance.
