Vaughn's entertaining fantasy debut introduces Kitty Norville, a closeted werewolf who hosts a popular Denver radio program called The Midnight Hour. During her show, Kitty takes phone calls from listeners (not all of whom are human) while trying to maintain her secret identity. Unfortunately, the local vampire crime family wants her show canceled and has hired someone to kill her. In fact, it's during the course of Kitty's dramatic on-air conversation with her would-be assassin that she reveals to listeners that she is, indeed, a werewolf. Eventually, local police enlist her to help track down a serial killer who exhibits werewolflike tendencies. While Kitty's occasional neediness, snide tone and attempts at werewolf wit can grate, this remains a surprisingly human tale. Blurbs from Charlaine Harris and L.A. Banks will cue their readers. A strong four star debut

Wow, this story was really good. Kitty is a night talk show host and one day her subject gets accidentally twisted around into a 'paranormal' advice show. This works extra well because Kitty is also a werewolf. She finds herself dealing with a dirty pack, a family of vampires, and rogue werewolf leaving a trail of mutilated bodies. While others have complained that Kitty is whiney and weak, I thought she came across as more human than her genre counterparts. I feel like Kitty doesn't really like violence even when she is forced into violent situations. Kitty still sees what it means to be human and she keeps her wolf at bay. The pace of the story moved along briskly. The book is shorter than a lot of books of the same genre so it wasted no time getting to the grist of the story. I really liked Kitty and I am eager to see where the story goes from here. The only thing keeping this from being a five star book is some weird stuff with her pack leader at the start of the book. It just left me with a grossed out feeling I couldn't shake. I am just glad Kitty has moved away from being so submissive. I recommend this book to fans of Charlaine Harris, Rachel Vincent, and Kim Harrison.

Kept me up through the Midnight Hour

I've been meaning to start this series for quite a while, and finally got around to it! It definitely was worth the wait. I thought the story was wonderfully written, much better than the books you usually find in this genre. The story was tight, without a lot of extra analysis or gratuitous sex hanging around. I liked Kitty quite a bit, especially how she grew and got more confident as the story progressed, and I really liked the way the werewolf and vampire cultures were explained. I was trying to think of another book I've read that had a werewolf as the main character, and I think this was the first! I'll definitely be continuing this series, and I highly recommend it for anyone who is interesting in the paranormal genre but wants to ease their way into it.

I loved the humor and the compassion Kitty brought to the world of werewolves and vampires. And I loved the way that that compassion got her into so much trouble. I'm looking forward to reading the next.
