If wishes could fly, this simplistic homily about what happens when we die would be airborne. The book is based on a "six-week course about death" that Stone has given regularly since 1989, and it sounds it: chatty, meandering, anecdotal, lacking the rigor of a proper study of death-for example, David Darling's Zen Physics (Forecasts, Feb. 26). This is Stone's first book, but she is well known as the founder of God's Love We Deliver, an organization that delivers free meals to homebound AIDS patients. Here, she makes no bones about her belief in the integrity and survival of the self after death, but she's coy about the likely source of her faith in this idea-her discipleship to the Hindu guru Swami Muktananda. Instead, she points to near-death experiences as proof of survival, missing the point that these experiences are called "near" for a reason, and then to flimsy evidence regarding past lives. The author does forcefully remind readers of the inevitability of death, but her scanting of the "grief process" as "not logical, not appropriate" because we're immortal anyway smacks of spiritual superiority. Stone insists that "there is literally no such thing as death," contradicting the teaching of nearly every major spiritual tradition that death is not only real but a mystery. She no doubt means well, but her book doesn't start the conversation-it stops it dead.

After two years in an ashram in India, Stone felt called to work with the dying. Out of that calling have come a meals-on-wheels program for AIDS patients, workshops for the terminally ill and those involved with the dying, and now this book. Named after the workshops, it strives to convince us of two primary propositions: we are not annihilated by death, and grief--that is, the psychologically and often physically debilitating reaction to a loved one's death--is neither necessary nor beneficial. Physical death is certain, Stone bluntly reminds us, but souls are eternal. Meditation is especially useful for realizing the soul's timelessness, she says, and once one accepts the soul's perdurability, there is no reason for grief--sadness, yes, but not the confusion and misery of extreme mourning. The most striking thing about Stone's very accessible, jargon-free effort is that it presents Christian understandings of eternal life and of consolation very well with virtually no "God-talk." Enlightening and helpful

This book does NOT contain the typical advice on how to cope and what to do when a loved one dies, so it may not be for you if that's what you want. It is rather a spiritual approach to death that grew out of the author's relationship with a loved one who died prematurely. I found it a breath of fresh air because it turns upside down a lot of the traditional negative ways the Western world looks at death. The author says that if you are suffering too much, you probably have misconceptions about what death means. She came to new conclusions about death from personal experience and shares them in a very moving and generous way. Because of this, the book can perhaps help you cope in a much deeper and more satisfying way than the rest of the stuff you're likely to find out there.

Clear, concise

This book addressed the concerns on death and dying.
However, the only thing I disagree with the author on is that a grieving person can go to just "sadness" instead of "grief" by just reading her book and making a change just that quickly.
In reality, I wanted to just be sad, but my body is still undergoing a lot of "grief" that my Dad died last year.
The things she wants us to do are not easy at all to do. They look and feel easier on paper that is...The reality is, when our loved ones die, we really HURT. (Maybe for a long time too!)
Nonetheless, it was a great book by a spirited author.
I especially enjoyed her house diagrams and her organized themes that penetrated her work.

As I journey throught the experience of watching my grandmother make her transition, Start the Conversation is helping me to think of death in a new way. The reminders that we are eternal and that by just being willing to show up for the experience we release our fears. The conversation is ultimately about my belief system, about me. The book gives one much food for thought.

MARGARET MARON grew up in the country near Raleigh, North Carolina, but for many years lived in Brooklyn, New York. When she and her artist husband returned to the farm that had been in her family for a hundred years, she began a series based on her own background. Every Deborah Knott mystery is unique, original and entertaining

Judge Deborah Knott of Colleton County, North Carolina is settling in quite nicely to married life with Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Bryant who has loved her for a long time. When Dwight's ex-wife dies, his eight year old son Cal comes to live them and they are in the process of becoming a family. Deborah and Dwight try not to discuss their work at home but sometimes that is not possible when she has information he needs.

Body parts are found all around the county and nobody has a clue whose remains these are because nobody has filed a missing person's report. Flame Smith comes to town looking for her lover Buzz Harris who she intends to marry once his divorce is finalized. She can't find him so she goes to the sheriff; she identifies marks on the corpse that Buzz had. Finger prints prove he is the victim but nobody knows who could have hated him so much as to do such a horrific thing. The answers lies in a case Deborah heard in court but she is not yet aware of its significance. If she does and provide the information to her husband, with what he has they will be able to identify the killer?.

Every Deborah Knott mystery is unique, original and entertaining with red herrings and unexpected twists to keep the reader guessing who the killer is. In HARD ROW, the audience get an inside look at the judge's personal life as Dwight plays a major role in the storyline. Fans can't help but adore him because he loves his wife and is thankful she loves him enough to marry him and be a mother to his son. Having Used "Winter's Child" as a bridge

to a new family life for Judge Deborah Knott Bryant, Margaret Maron returns her to the bench and the familiarity of Colleton County, NC for last year's "Hard Row". As is the case with most of Maron's writings, we get some no nonsense "judgeship" from Deborah, mixed with family happenings and societal pressures in rural NC.

In this tale, we are enlightened by the discovery that it is not only the border states that cope with the reliance on illegal immigrant labor, only to subject the workers to callousness, indifference and bigotry in the "land of opportunity". But this isn't a political tome, just a sensible use of the current state as a backdrop for a horrendous series of crimes that Judge Deborah's new husband Dwight has to investigate.
Mix in a little family dynamic of Deborah and Dwight getting used to having Dwight's son, Cal, live with them and try to recover from his mom's death.. and you have "Hard Row", a welcome 13th edition to Maron's down home series set in North Carolina.

A good read, but you'll enjoy it far more if you've read the other books in the series.

Another Hit for Maron

This is another in the series of the Judge Deborah Knott stories by author Margaret Maron. In this story, Deborah and her new husband, Dwight Bryant are getting adjusted to married life as well as having gotten custody of Dwight's son Cal. His mother was killed in an accident, so not only is Deborah a new wife, she is a new stepmother to a confused and lonely little boy.

With your dad the primary detective running down killers and keeping the peace, and your stepmother a Judge who does not always keep courthouse hours, Cal is left to make friends with the many cousins, aunts, uncles and step relatives in this close knit family setting.

Along with all the usual turmoil associated with a large active family, there are the dismembered body parts showing up all over the county. Dwight and his deputies are kept busy sorting through the various crime scenes and trying to identify the body.

Once the body is identified, then comes the motive and trying to figure out who did such a gruesome thing to this unlikable but very wealthy man. We have plenty of suspects: the estranged wife, the girlfriend, the migrant workers who he treated cruelly, the managers and employees who worked for him, but did not really like him.

Each suspect has to be eliminated and interviewed, along with adjusting to married life and full-time parenthood.

But Judge Knott and hubby Dwight are up for the challenge, they are both professionals in their fields and do their best to uphold the law and bring the criminals to justice.

Along with this story line is an underlying message about the treatment of migrant workers and the issues of illegal vs. legal status for workers. At times it seems Maron is on a soapbox.

I always enjoy the Deborah Knott series, and wonder in amazement how Maron keeps her characters straight from one book to another. I imagine she has one wall in her writing space dedicated to nothing but the family tree of the Knotts and Bryants.

Originally published in the U.K. in 1994, this excellent guide to setting and accomplishing goals for personal and professional success originated in workshops the author has been teaching for 25 years. Ditzler offers a clear, concise and thorough "framework" for defining values, identifying important roles and prioritizing and focusing energy where it "will make the most difference to you." Beginning with an annual life review, she moves on through learning from the past, changing "limiting paradigms" to "empowering" ones, setting "value-driven goals" and being your own personal coach. Now everyone can be CEO of their lives

Having read many self improvement/leadership effectiveness books, this was the first book to truly enable me to make the transformation from cognitive understanding to behavioral change. The book is an easy, engaging read with many real life examples. The step by step process goes beyond traditional goal setting. The reader can immediately apply the concepts to their personal life and move themselves into action. Upon completing the work pages in the book I had a personal strategic plan for making my next 12 months my "Best Year Yet." It was a fun, energizing experience.

A simple process that will change your life

Five years ago, I picked up this book on a whim for about six pounds in Mysteries bookshop near Seven Dials in London. Shortly before new year's eve, I got together with a few friends and went through the ten questions listed on the back cover of the book, creating in the process a one-page "Best Year Yet" plan.

Not only was the next year my best year yet, I have repeated the process every December since, (sometimes on my own, sometimes with friends), and each passing year has once again become my "best year yet".

Last year for the first time my business partner and I sat down and did the process for our then suffering enterprise; suffice it to say that despite the occasional hiccup, our bank manager is once again our friend!

The author is also an executive coach, and while many of the models she uses are not original, (she borrows particularly heavily from Steven Covey's seven habits), they are universally useful and occasionally reap (for me) surprising results. Despite the interesting stories, examples, and insights, this is far more of a "doing" book than a "reading" book, and it includes a complete do it youself Best Year Yet workshop in the back.

Great for a Novice Goal Setter

This book is dedicated to Goal Setting. The key concept here is to identify the key roles you play (or would like to) in life, rate your performance on each and then plan the year forward to succeed in each of these areas. The author provides a useful structure to approach goal-setting.

While a `role driven' method of goal-setting is a useful approach (and certainly novel to me), I felt it somewhat limiting to someone who is not new to this area. For example, one of my goals for the year is to do yoga twice a week. I would have to view one of my roles as that of a `yogi' to set a goal for yoga. And labelling myself `yogi' is a stretch - pun unintentional. But the role-based goal setting is a useful complement to regular goal-setting exercises.

That said, the self-assessment chart of how one performs in various roles provides a compelling visual and is a vivid motivator for change. The course / book is structured such that it leads to a single page of goals.

The commentary accompanying the exercises is occasionally verbose and perhaps even tedious. The points however are useful and the book would benefit from distilling questions / issues that lead to meaningful answers. The author has a wealth of knowledge, accumulated by conducting goal-setting seminars and talking to many hundreds of participants. This can be organized in a better way.

The entire effort took more than 3 hours (more than 6 for me) that the author promises - time well spent. Some exercises require reflection / self-awareness particularly when responding to questions such as `list the key values you uphold, in order of importance'.

Overall, for someone who is not familiar with goal-setting, this book provides a very useful process to goal-setting. For compulsive goal-setters this book offers interesting and different a viewpoint, which will undoubtedly strengthen the goal-setting process.

It doesn't matter whether you love or hate Jack Welch. Who can resist hearing the man tell his story? This abridged version of his recently published autobiography, featuring Welch himself, is quite entertaining. With his slightly raspy Boston accent, Welch discusses his childhood and his career. When he proclaims something, he gives examples to illustrate his point. For instance, he says his mother was the strongest influence on his life. He then recalls the time he threw a hockey stick across the ice in disgust after losing a game, and his mother stormed into the locker room as some teammates were changing to exclaim loudly, "If you don't know how to lose, you'll never know how to win." When discussing his long career at GE, Welch is equally detailed. While some listeners unfamiliar with the corporation may find some of the discussions tedious, most will be captivated by what appears to be Welch's brutal honesty. He talks about having to lobby for promotions because he didn't "fit the GE mold," and he's open about making some poor business decisions. He's not as forthright as it appears, though. He talks about his beloved wife, Carolyn, who provided a stable home while Welch was rising in GE's ranks, but barely mentions their divorce. Inspired me to be a leader and taught me how to do it

I consider this a bible for managers everywhere. This book inspired me to quit my job at a prestigious management consulting firm to pursue a career track that would enable me to run a business. As much as possible, I tried to understand and emulate Jack's thought process. Eight years later, on my 32nd birthday, I became a Managing Director of a consumer finance business in Southeast Asia. Now that I've had more experience and more responsibilities, I've recently re-read this to highlight passages to share with my senior management team and still found the insights within the book immensely useful.

In hindsight, Jack Welch probably received more credit than he deserved. The three people who in put into his succession plan were mostly mediocre. Immelt probably was the correct decision, but that would only invalidate Welch's legacy because Immelt has a totally different style and approach.

Quickie on Jack Welch & GE

First half of the book is about childhood-to-retirement. Second half is dedicated to a few popular topics: Globalization, Six Sigma, eBusiness, Honeywell, etc. How can you summarize a guy's life in just a few pages... especially Jack Welch. I did enjoy the overall inspiring story, but it lacked substance. It�fs more a biography rather than a business �gtool�h book.
For instance, Jack�fs first limelight was an obscure unit in the plastics division. It obviously propelled his career and got him out from under �gthe pile�h. But, all the story says is that the people diligently developed a robust plastic (after many months) and suddenly $100+ million unit was born�c well�c. I�fm sure there�fs a lot more to the business challenge than that. Jack writes about what he remembers and naturally that tends to have holes. Those holes lead one to believe that business was much simpler than it really was.
The other criticism is that specific people within and outside of GE are named in stories, which sound unobjective. One must look at these characterizations with somewhat of a challenging eye. As expected, Jack isn�ft going to criticize Henry Kissinger and Larry Bossidy, but one would hope that he would put more beef into Gary Wendt�fs firing. Rather, Jack saves most of his critical commentary for the EU Commission, more specifically Mr. Gonzales-Diaz.
A light hearted reader can take this book for what it is: a fun and entertaining biography, but not a serious business book.

Tish and Shane were a extremely intense couple who went though proverbial hell and broke up, understandable. But they still love each other.
Two years later they reunite around Shane's wedding to the president's daughter.
After video taping the engagement party not so friendly things begin to happen to Tish.
Shane has to make a choice follow his heart or uphold his family pride.
I liked the main characters except for Cal.

Book two of Wedding Veil Wishes series.

The antique wedding veil is said to have been made by young witch in Ireland. Legend says the veil has the power to grant the deepest wish of the wearer's soul. Tish Gallagher's friend's wish certainly came true. That does not prove the veil had anything to do with it, of course, but Tish has gotten desperate. Tish is the owner, and only employee, of Capture the Moment Videos. She specializes in weddings, but at the moment would gladly take any work that promises money. The designer suit she recently purchased is ruined. Her cable has been cut off for nonpayment. (There goes television and internet access.) Her car has been repossessed. Things were going down hill fast with no end in sight. They say trouble comes in threes, but Tish is proving that statement false. President Nathan Benedict's daughter had been told that Tish is the best wedding videographer in the Houston, Texas, area. It looks as though Tish's wish is really going to come true! As Tish meets Elysee to discuss the video project, she learns that the groom is her ex-husband, Secret Service agent Shane Tremont. Two years apart has not dampened the sizzle between Tish and Shane, but now it is too late. Of course, Elysee knew all along that Tish and Shane had once been wed, but that fact does not phase her one bit. Tish really wants to hate Elysee, but the first daughter is so sweet, honest, and naïve that Tish cannot help but like her.

Bigger problems hit the fan when Elysee's former nana (nanny) approaches and asks for help to rescue a friend from India. The engagement party is about to become very dangerous indeed.

**** I missed book one, There Goes the Bride, but since each book seems to be a stand-alone story, I never felt as though I were lost. Those who did read it will get to see Delaney (the friend who wished on the veil in the previous title) as a secondary character this time. I found that to be a very nice little touch! However, the author's main focus stays on Tish, Shane, and Elysee. If you are a shop-a-holic or have a shoe fetish, then you will certainly empathize with Tish, who spends her last $93 on a pair of shoes. Even though I do not fall into that category, I still found myself sympathizing with her. No matter what life throws at Tish, the lady is a survivor. Shane's character is strong too. He loses the full function of his hand while saving the life of the first daughter. However, the character of Elysee is just TOO innocent to be believable. There is just no way a grown woman can be that naive, blind to the faults of others, and gullible. All-in-all, author Lori Wilde gives readers a delightful dose of magic and an exciting adventure to help pass rainy days in bliss. I loved every moment I spent reading this story and will be on the look out for the first story, as well as the next. ****

The Greek Tragedy of Biographies - Loved it!

This was the second biography of Aristotle Onassis that I have read. So I had his life story already in my head. But Nicholas Gage's research was superior to anything I had read. The point of view from the love affair of Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis - is tragic love affair. This would make a great movie - the old saying, "truth is stranger than fiction" holds true to their lives.

Could Not Put it Down Kind of Book!

I loved this book. I am the type of person who cannot seem to finish a book unless it totally captures my interest but this book from the beginning to end poured information about both Callas and Onassis that were so interesting. Although I felt the detailed day-to-day schedule on the voyage of Christina when Callas was on it was a bit boring due to too much details but it was still facinating. Mr. Gage, just seems really committed to relating facts, which is above all most important when writing biographies. Thank you for the wonderful book, Mr. Gage. Bravo! on a wonderful job.

Didn't know much about Maria Callas and Onassis before this book, but feel like I do now. Their life style and relationship was well explained. Good book!

Sacrificing quality for quantity...

I have been a big fan of David Baldacci from the very beginning and have been impressed with the consistent quality of his work. Unfortunately, with his last three books, he now seems to be sacrificing quality for quantity and Simple Genius is a disappointment.

Baldacci brings back two former Secret Service agents, Sean King and Michelle Maxwell. These two appeared previously in Split Second and Hour Game and are now private investigators. Simple Genius opens with Michelle Maxwell having a meltdown--the result of some long-repressed childhood memory. Meanwhile, King is hired by a super-secret company to investigate the death of one of their top mathematicians (which happens on CIA property). King stays at the company headquarters called Babbage Town, where he meets a whole host of scientists who are on the verge of some earth-changing discoveries. But he's not at Babbage Town very long before someone else ends of dead. This case will pit King against the FBI, the CIA and unknown spies and will involve drug dealing, secret codes, illegal detainments, illegal torture, buried treasure and an 11 year old autistic genius. Yup--it's that's hokey. While King is battling all these things, it is uncertain whether Maxwell will be able to pull through for him.

I really liked King and Maxwell in Baldacci's previous books. But in Simple Genius, they're just too one dimensional. It also seems as if Baldacci's plots become more and more far-fetched. I wonder if he's now writing books because he has to meet a deadline and not because he has a riveting story to tell. Baldacci is still much better than many mystery writers today. Unfortunately, I've come to expect much more from him.

Wonderful summer escapist thriller

The seeds of Baldacci's latest novel "Simple Genius" are sowed a book earlier.

Mentally stressed beyond her ability to continue a normal life, Michelle Maxwell simply breaks down. Her horrifying experience in "Hour Game" with a boyfriend who turned out to be a serial killer and the continuing anguish of a deeply buried secret we will later learn she has carried with her since she was only six years old drives her into a potentially suicidal bar brawl with a complete stranger. Her long-time friend and investigative partner, Sean King, convinces her to check herself into a psychiatric hospital for rest, recuperation and serious examination of the demons she is encountering. Assuming full responsibility for the financial costs of this care, he desperately searches for work and accepts a contract to investigate the suicide (murder?) of Monk Turing, a quantum physicist and computer scientist working for Babbage Town, a high powered corporate think tank located across the York River from Camp Peary, a top secret CIA training facility. (That name, by the way - Turing, that is - is no coincidence!)

But like any good modern thriller, "Simple Genius" draws in far more detail, many more twists and turns, unexpected plot diversions and absorbing information than one would expect from this straightforward plot development in the opening chapters - the basics of public and private encryption keys and the related use of enormous numbers and their correspondingly huge prime factors; rogue CIA agents; the history of German POWs during WW II in New England; a treasure hunt from Colonial England and America's first days as an independent nation; the moral issues of civil rights as they apply to prisoners in the current wars on terror and drugs; hypnosis and the difficulties of diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses; and much more.

Like some of his high-powered peers in the thriller racket (Jonathan Kellerman, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child immediately come to mind), Baldacci's side bars on science, history, geography and politics are diverting, informative, interesting and entertaining without interrupting the timing and flow of the plot. This has got to be an art in its own right!

Highly recommended summer escapist reading! If you enjoy thrillers, you won't be sorry for taking a copy of this one to the beach or the cottage with you. And, thankfully, the door is left wide open for return appearances by Sean King and Michelle Maxwell.

Not Baldacci's best

One of the problems with the present national malaise about the War on Terror, is that the stream of revelations about certain practices in which our government engages contributes to the plot lines of new thrillers.

Here is a partial list-drug smuggling, extraordinary renditions, collateral damage, kidnapping, torture, waterboarding, and black ops. All of these find there way into David Baldacci's Simple Genius along with repressed memory, codebreaking, martial arts, autism, secret tunnels, suicide, martial infidelity and psychiatry.

This books reminds me of one of those silent films of the 1920's where the heroine would escape a burning building, only to be tied to the railroad track. She always escapes but only to find herself ensnared in another escape-proof situation.

Baldacci is too good a writer to fall into the kind of formulaic claptrap this book presents. Less time with the "thrill a minute" stuff and more with character would have better served Baldacci and his loyal readers.

Attitude towards risk determines acquisition of wealth, according to Kiyosaki, a financial lecturer and millionaire. Fear of risk keeps you in the house-and-bills "rat trap," unable to escape. Short fore- and afterwords by the Hawaiian-born Kiyosaki frame a serviceable reading by British actor Hoye. Sounding American, Hoye makes little attempt to add zip to this economics discourse. Reading from a script, his narration is unmemorable, but it successfully conveys the intended monetary advice. The random musical bridges do not correspond to sections or chapters. Why listen to Kiyosaki and add to his wealth?

Best way to answer that is with another question. What is your net worth and how does that compare to what Mr. Kiyosaki is worth? Here is another question. How does your net worth compare to the many successful Kiyosaki students?

Less than 2% of people in America are doing well. Less than 2% in the richest country in the world!

It pays to listen to someone like Robert Kiyosaki.

RD/PD the power of MLM????

I have read more than a half dozen reviews (probably same person) attributing the success to Rich Dad, Poor Dad to network marketing (MLM).I don't know if there is any truth to that or not, but I sure hope so.You see, I just signed up into a MLM company (not Amway) and if MLM can turn a book into a mega best aeller like some people have indicated, then that certaintly prooves the power of network marketing.And obviously Network Marketing (MLM) is far more powerful than that cheesy, supposedly well researched (it's not) website that gets getting mentioned here or the constant barrage of 1 star bashers (really just one person with a attitude problem) and obviously more successful than the self publishing industry.Thanks to RD/PD, I have reorganized my investments, started a successful business and am sharing this info with family and friends.1 star reviewer (s), get a life already!

Great books RTK

I just purchased Rich Dad, Poor Dad, Retire Young, Retire Rich and Rich Dad's guide to investing. I also have the tapes from RD, PD, CFQ, and RDGTI. These excellent programs by RTK have already made a profound change in my personal and financial life. They are a must for anyone who wants success.Two others are Millionaire Next Door and The Millionaire Mind.
