Amazon.com Review
Since the middle ages, Western Europeans have practiced alchemy, a primitive form of chemistry, in the great hope of transforming base metal into gold. In the early 18th century, a second great secret puzzled Western Europe's early scientists: how to make porcelain. Recently arrived from the Orient, porcelain quickly became a symbol of power, prestige, and good taste. In The Arcanum, Janet Gleeson presents an entertaining and informative account of the invention of European porcelain and the founding of the Meissen Porcelain Manufacture outside Dresden, Germany.

Her narrative focuses on three individuals: Alchemist Johann Frederick Böttger inadvertently discovered the arcanum, or secret formula, for making porcelain; Johan Gregor Herold, an ambitious artist, developed colors and patterns of unparalleled brilliance at the newly established Meissen Porcelain Manufacture; Johann Joachim Kaendler, a virtuoso sculptor, used the Meissen porcelain to invent a new art form. Interwoven with the story of Augustus the Strong, the greedy and ambitious king of the Kingdom of Saxony, who held Böttger captive until he discovered the formula, Gleeson's tale reads easily and maintains a high level of suspense and intrigue throughout. --Bertina Loeffler

From Publishers Weekly
Who would have thought that the story of porcelain would be such a rousing tale of wealth, intrigue and outrageous greed and gluttony? In an all-but-abandoned German mountaintop castle called Albrechtsburg in the town of Meissen, a brilliant 18th-century apothecary and alchemist by the name of Johann Frederick Bottger discovered the secret for making porcelain, which was the next best thing to gold at the time in Europe. Like many other alchemists of his day, Bottger had once untruthfully claimed to have found the secret formula for turning base metals into gold. But for King Augustus of Saxony, who?smelling fortune?promptly imprisoned the young scientist, the arcanum for porcelain, or china, would have to suffice. Gleeson's lively account of how Meissen became the West's first porcelain center follows a colorful cast of characters: the lascivious Augustus; two rival decorative artists, Johann Gregor Herod and Johann Joachim Kaendler, who applied their skills as diligently against each other as they did in creating precious porcelain objects; and goldsmith Christo Konrad Hunger, a "hard-bitten profiteer" who would "happily stoop to intimidation, threats, and all manner of chicanery if it would help to fill his purse." Greed?for money, fame, porcelain or power?seems to have motivated everyone associated with Meissen, including the author's apparent favorite, "the unfortunate Bottger," whose youthful boasting and actual genius in the laboratory made it all possible. Though somewhat hastily wrapped up, this is delightful historical narrative. Major ad/ promo.

Extraordinary story all right - well worth reading
By A. Woodley
This is one of those 'can't-put-downable' real-life true stories where the truth is stranger than fiction, and in Janet Gleeson's capable hands (or under her capable pen) the story, in all its astounding details unfolds beautifully.
Gleeson does rate as one of my favourite authors and she does have the knack of picking out incredibly interesting stories that are peopled with the most astonishing cast of characters. In this case it is the search for the 'recipe' for porcelain, the Arcanum as it was called. It was one of the great mysteries for eighteenth century Europe - the discovery of how it was made was on a par with discovering the philosoper's stone - or the recipe to turn base metals into gold. And in fact the book starts off with a charlatan alchemist (Johann Frederick Böttger) who claims he has discovered this recipe or arcanum.
Unfortunately Bottger becomes a prisoner of his wealthy patron who realises that he is worth more as a captive working for him, than as a free-agent roaming around. Forced to experiment Bottger inardvertently stumbles across the arcanum for Pocelain. Gleeson then shows the lives of other men such as Johan Gregor Herold, an ambitious artist, developed colors and patterns of unparalleled brilliance at the newly established Meissen Porcelain Manufacture; and Johann Joachim Kaendler, a virtuoso sculptor who used the Meissen porcelain to invent a new art form.
The story is one of greed, incredible artistry and innovation and all set against the political ambitions of a warlike and ever-changing European landscape. Gleeson's true skill is in the way she draws out the detail to people the landscape with lifelike and reaslistic detail without cluttering us with dull information or specious descriptions. She is immensely readable, bringing the story and the people alive.

Potty About Porcelain !
By Bruce Loveitt
Who ever thought a book about porcelain could be so engrossing? Ms. Gleeson has written an exciting (yes....exciting!), fascinating tale. It is a combination of science and adventure with some industrial espionage thrown in. The biographical aspects are excellent also. You get a real feel for the personalities who are portrayed in this book: the profligate king (Augustus) who is desperate for a way to finance his out-of-control spending, so he pins his hopes on alchemy!; the teenage alchemist (Johannn Bottger) who draws attention to himself with a magic trick that fools people into thinking he has found a way to create gold, and thereby gets himself locked away by Augustus until he can duplicate the feat! But Bottger was no charlatan. He really thought he could do it.... The tension builds as Augustus invests lots of money in Bottger's enterprise but starts to get impatient when he doesn't see any results.... Poor Bottger even manages to escape for a short while because he is afraid of being executed for his failure. Eventually, he saves himself by coming up with a commercially viable formula for porcelain.... but it wasn't easy! This is a relatively brief book but it is filled with many interesting characters besides the two mentioned above and the action moves around to various cities as people who have worked with Bottger try to smuggle out the secret formula and shop it around to other kings and princes...... A very enjoyable (and educational!) book.

Enthrallling, riveting ... porcelain? Who'd 'a thunk it?
By David Basskin
I picked this up at a bookstall at Heathrow last week, started it and literally couldn't put it down until the end. Wow! I don't think I've given the history of porcelain five seconds' thought in my life, but while I was reading The Arcanum nothing could have struck me as more fascinating. Janet Gleeson is a born storyteller - and who'd 'a thunk *that* with a background in writing collectors' guides for porcelain and posters? Hello Hollywood - here's a movie waiting to be made! Sex, danger, intrigue, discovery, war, politics, envy, gluttony - hey, all seven deadly sins and then some. As God is my witness, I'll never ignore porcelain again!

Amazon.com Review
Oprah Book Club® Selection, December 1998: A funny thing happens to Novalee Nation on her way to Bakersfield, California. Her ne'er-do-well boyfriend, Willie Jack Pickens, abandons her in an Oklahoma Wal-Mart and takes off on his own, leaving her with just 10 dollars and the clothes on her back. Not that hard luck is anything new to Novalee, who is "seventeen, seven months pregnant, thirty-seven pounds overweight--and superstitious about sevens.... For most people, sevens were lucky. But not for her," Billie Letts writes. "She'd had a bad history with them, starting with her seventh birthday, the day Momma Nell ran away with a baseball umpire named Fred..."

Still, finding herself alone and penniless in Sequoyah, Oklahoma is enough to make even someone as inured to ill fortune as Novalee want to give up and die. Fortunately, the Wal-Mart parking lot is the Sequoyah equivalent of a town square, and within hours Novalee has met three people who will change her life: Sister Thelma Husband, a kindly eccentric; Benny Goodluck, a young Native American boy; and Moses Whitecotton, an elderly African American photographer. For the next two months, Novalee surreptitiously makes her home in the Wal-Mart, sleeping there at night, exploring the town by day. When she goes into labor and delivers her baby there, however, Novalee learns that sometimes it's not so bad to depend on the kindness of strangers--especially if one of them happens to be Sam Walton, the superchain's founder.

Where the Heart Is oddly mixes heart-warming vignettes and surprising, brutal violence. Novalee's story is juxtaposed with occasional chapters chronicling Willy Jack's downward spiral into prison, disappointment, and degradation. And even in Sequoyah, sudden storms, domestic violence, kidnapping, and deadly fires punctuate Novalee's progress from homeless, unwed teen mom to successful, happy member of the community. This is not a subtle book; there's never any doubt that our heroine will make a home for herself and her baby or that Willy Jack will get what he deserves for abandoning them. Still, Billie Letts has created several memorable characters, and there's always room for another novel that celebrates the life-affirming qualities of reading, the importance of education, and the power of love to change lives. --Alix Wilber

Letts's debut novel concerns a pregnant teenage girl who finds a new life among the quirky inhabitants of a small town in Oklahoma.

From School Library Journal
YA?Novalee Nation, 17 and pregnant, finds herself stranded outside a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, with $7.77 in her pocket and no one to turn to for help. This is an unlikely beginning for a humorous and hopeful novel, but that is just what this is. As she sits outside the store taking stock of her situation, plucky Novalee meets several of the town's more unusual inhabitants: Sister Husband, who presents her with a shop-worn welcome-wagon basket; black photographer Moses Whitecotton, who conveys to her the importance of a name for her unborn child; and Indian Benny Goodluck, who gives her a buckeye tree for good luck. These and other Sequoyah citizens rally around Novalee when she has her baby on the floor of Wal-Mart, and form the basis for this most enjoyable novel.?Pamela B. Joy in Sequoiah, Oklahoma
By dikybabe
You know that you like to laugh, as well as feel sober and near tears. This is a book that should please. The well-thumbed trade paperback in our library continues to be checked out and praised. Even since the movie was released, folks still want to read the words of Billie Letts, a comic, heart-felt word crafter.
Such great names as Novalee and Americus Nation, Willy Jack Pickens, Sister Husband, Moses Whitecotton, make the reader want to see what this is all about. And Novalee's superstition over the number 7 adds to the folksie manner in which Letts develops her story. As to plot, a baby born in a Wal-Mart, why not?
In one episode, you find yourself laughing out loud, and in another there is suspense, sorrow, and a teary eye. Letts gives you the full experience in a book that can't be put down. Add these characters to your friends in print. And read The Honk And Holler Opening Soon, too. While not a sequel, exactly, it does depict another set of Sequoiah, Oklahomans who are a part of another good story.
Letts is a talented story teller. For a relaxing good read, try her books.

Letts Really Hits Home With This One!
By Wanda Goolsby
A Walker Percy Award Winner, this believable down-home tale will melt over your senses like warm butter over thick grits! Letts tells the story of a young pregnant girl who is left stranded by her boyfriend in a small town at Wal-Mart. She lives in the store until the night she gives birth to her baby in the middle of the Wal-Mart floor. When the secret of her living, sleeping, eating, and having a baby in Wal-Mart gets out, Novalee Nation becomes an instant headliner! The people in the town fall in love with this seventeen-year old girl and her miracle baby. What she finds in this town full of strangers who open up their hearts to her is a place she can call home. Novalee is full of life and positive spirit. She is determined and overcomes each obstacle thrown her way by never giving up. Through losing her boyfriend, losing her baby, losing her best friend, and losing her job, Novalee still marches on. This book can be read easily in one sitting, no complex words or lengthy paragraphs, just an unpredictable plot full of wonderfully descriptive narative and infectiously endearing characters. Where the Heart Is can be read, understood, and loved by the whole family!

She's Blindingly Sweet
By Caroline P. Hampton
Billie Letts has created a novel unlike I have ever read. From start to finish, this book is surprising, unexpected and very creative. She never takes the easy way out, NOR does she do what you think she's going too. Her characters are one of a kind, and unlike any you've ever read about. Sister Husband is worth the price of the book alone.
"Where The Heart Is" is a wonderful book that digs deep into your heart and tells a wonderful story. I found it very enjoyable, a nice and easy read. Certainly one for anybody looking for a good story with interesting characters. Very enjoyable!

From Publishers Weekly
Pepper, attorney since 1988 for James Earl Ray, the convicted killer of Martin Luther King Jr., believes that his client was a patsy, not the real assassin. He charges that the civil rights leader slain in 1968 was the victim of a conspiracy that involved Hoover's FBI, the CIA, Army intelligence, the mafia and the Memphis, Tenn., police force, extending to the highest levels of the federal government, which viewed King as a dangerous revolutionary. Pepper has interviewed many new witnesses who remained silent during the last 27 years, and he names names of officials at the local and national levels who, he alleges, participated in the conspiracy. According to Pepper, a team of U.S. Army Special Forces snipers was at the scene, taking aim at King at the same moment as a back-up "civilian" assassin. The Army team, by this account, had orders to kill both King and the Reverend Andrew Young, but the final order to pull the trigger was never given because the "civilian" assassin-tentatively identified here as one Raul Pereira, not Ray-shot King first. Pepper interviewed two former Special Forces members who claim to have been part of the sniper squad. He also cites two failed, government-orchestrated attempts to assassinate King in 1965, as well as a subsequent mafia contract on the civil rights leader's life by New Orleans mob boss Carlos Marcello. Pepper wants a trial for Ray, who, he asserts, was coerced into pleading guilty by his lawyer; the defense, he notes, has never even been allowed to test the rifle or bullets in evidence.

From Booklist
Since 1988, Pepper, who was active in the civil rights and antiwar movements in the 1960s, has been chief counsel for James Earl Ray, convicted--on a guilty plea, without a trial--of the April 4, 1968, assassination of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King. Through appeals, a civil suit, a TV simulation of the trial Ray never had, and now this book, Pepper has tried to bring to judicial and public attention new evidence, which suggests strongly that Ray was merely the fall guy in a multilevel assassination plot involving the Mafia and government intelligence agencies. Perhaps as disturbing as the paranoia of the FBI, Army Intelligence, and other agencies that viewed Dr. King as a dangerous revolutionary leader are the subsequent actions of local, state, and federal officials who continue, even today, to obscure and obfuscate what happened in 1968. Pepper's story is inevitably complex, because it traces when and how Ray's defenders learned about various leads, as well as how those leads fit into their changing understanding of King's murder. But a list of the "principal players" and a final chapter that sums up the 1968 chronology will help readers put the pieces together. Worth attention from concerned citizens as well as dedicated conspiracy buffs. Mary Carroll

Review
The shooting of Dr. King Jr. prompted a massive cover-up which has withstood long probes: here Dr. Pepper, an associate of king, presents his case for the innocence of James Earl Ray and the implication of others in a set-up designed to end King's work. Pepper's pursuit of justice makes for an involving account. -- Midwest Book Review

This stunning book deftly reveals the horrible truth.
By Thomas J. Wright
As someone who reads widely and often, I can honestly say this: Very few books I have ever read have had as profound an impact upon me as Dr. William Pepper's meticulously and exhaustively researched "Orders To Kill". Dr. Pepper spent upwards of 18 years researching the facts behind the King Assassination and is probably the world's leading authority on the subject. "Orders To Kill" contains the results of those 18 years of investigation.
What he found is chilling and disturbing, and should make us wonder what happened to our "democracy": The government of the United States, among others, was deeply involved in the killing. And in a testament to Dr. Pepper's tenacity and skill as an investigative journalist, many of those responsible for King's political murder have actually admitted their complicity in the book (These facts do not 'give away' the plot, since this information is contained on the outside back of the book and because it takes a book of over 500 pages like this one to fully explain the enormity of the event it describes).
In fact, one of the men implicated in the assassination, witnessed the shooting himself and names the individual who actually fired the bullet that killed Dr. King (Hint: it is not James Earl Ray). Of course, this individual named names only after being assured by Dr. Pepper that he would be immune from prosecution for his role in the killing.
Dr. Pepper, through sheer persistence, an iron will, and a burning desire for the truth, has written a book that will grab the reader from page one, and not let go until the bitter (very) end.
The tale it so skillfully tells is a tragic one and is of epic proportions. But it is a tale that must be told, for if truth is to prevail in this world, as I believe it must, then books like this one must be written. I cannot recommend a book more highly than I recommend this one. Read it and prepare to be disgusted, frightened, saddened, and in the end, amazed and hopefully glad that the truth has finally prevailed.

What the King family wants you to know about his death
By Steve Reina
This very informative book starts with an introduction by Dexter King, son to Martin Luther King Jr. supporting author/attorney Wiliam Pepper's contention that this book tells the story of why his father died.

In his typically detailed fashion (also on display in Pepper's more recent Act of State) Pepper extensively supports his theories that:

1) James Earl Ray did NOT kill Martin Luther King Jr.

2) That the killing was rather the culmination of a conspiracy by the CIA, the FBI, organized crime, local Memphis law enforcement and others to eliminate King as a potential rival political leader to then President Lyndon Johnson, and

3) That the data supporting these claims includes the following:

a) A failure on the part of ballistics testing to match the gun possessed by Ray as being the actual murder weapon. Subsequent ballistics testing showed that this weapon had a unique charactistic where it would super heat and thereby cause melting to the bullets in a way which frustrate traditional matching attempts.

b) Claims by Ray himself that he was not guilty and that he was an innocent patsy brought to Memphis at the discretion of one Raul (Ray's sort of "one armed man") whok had been in contact with Ray for about a year prior to the killing. It's Rays contention that Raul would periodically give Ray assignments and then pay him in cash for performing those assignments including ultimately the purchase of the weapon police said was used by him to kill King.

c) Evidence that Raul did indeed exist and was linked to corrupt law enforcement in New Orleans.

d) Evidence provided by one Lloyd Jowers the owner of Jim's Grille, a dubious eating establishment located proximate to the Lorraine Motel where King was standing when he was shot. Jowers told Pepper that he had been involved in the plot to kill King and even later named a Memphis police officer, one Earl Clark as being the actual triggerman.

Unlike other conspiracy theories this one has the added currency of being the basis of not but two court victories on the part of its proponent. The first of these victories was a television trial wherein James Earl Ray was acquitted, albeit only on TV but still against a reputable prosecutor and featuring actual evidence from the original case itself. The other in court victory was a civil suit by the King estate against Lloyd Jowers seeking nominal damages (100 payable by Jowers to the King family for funeral expenses) and also a finding by the court that Jowers was indeed part of a larger conspiracy.

What's more other evidence has more than amply corroborated long term surveillance by the FBI throughout the 60s including many dirty tricks played by that selfsame organization.

From my perspective, one of the many ways in which those claiming a respect for the King legacy can show a true respect for that legacy is at least understanding his family's take on why he really died.

Superb

This is a very revealing book, exhaustively researched and written in a style that is reasonably easy to read. Read it if you are open to the possibility that the government doesn't always tell us the whole truth about things and you think that, in theory at least, it may do some evil things quite deliberately. Otherwise, don't bother.

The Panther (A John Corey Novel), by Nelson DeMille

Anti-Terrorist Task Force agent John Corey and his wife, FBI agent Kate Mayfield, have been posted overseas to Sana'a, Yemen-one of the most dangerous places in the Middle East. While there, they will be working with a small team to track down one of the masterminds behind the USS Cole bombing: a high-ranking Al Qaeda operative known as The Panther. Ruthless and elusive, he's wanted for multiple terrorist acts and murders-and the U.S. government is determined to bring him down, no matter the cost. As latecomers to a deadly game, John and Kate don't know the rules, the players, or the score. What they do know is that there is more to their assignment than meets the eye-and that the hunters are about to become the hunted.

Filled with breathtaking plot turns and told in John Corey's inimitable voice, THE PANTHER is a brilliant depiction of one of the most treacherous countries in the world and raises disturbing questions about whether we can ever know who our enemies - or our allies - really are.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Following closely on the heels of The Lion (2010), this gripping thriller (set early in 2004) finds antiterrorist agent John Corey and his wife, FBI agent Kate Mayfield, joining an investigative team in Yemen. Their stated mission: to continue looking into the suicide bombing of the USS Cole, the military vessel that was attacked by al-Qaeda in the port of Aden three-and-a-half years earlier. Their unstated mission: to bring to justice the mastermind of the Cole bombing, the man known as the Panther. As with previous Corey novels, the book balances suspense and action with humor: Corey relates the story in the first person, spicing his narrative with witty or sarcastic asides and other entertaining verbal meanderings, as though he’s telling us the story at a far remove, when the tense and potentially deadly events of the mission have been tempered by time and distance. Packed as usual with memorable characters (including one who’s starred in a couple of his own DeMille novels), political commentary, gritty atmosphere, and action, the book will be gobbled up by the author’s many fans, but readers unfamiliar with DeMille’s work (if there still are any) should be steered in its direction, too. It’s a first-class thriller, regardless of whether John Corey is the reader’s old friend or a new acquaintance. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: DeMille’s latest will draw on both the author’s sterling track record and an A-list promotion campaign to vault it onto best-seller lists. --David Pitt

A review of the actual book, not the price of the book!
By M.Jacobsen
Admittedly, I am a long-time John Corey fan. I keep expecting the author to eventually run out of the smart-alec remarks that John Corey is famous for, but he just keeps 'em coming. In The Panther, John and his wife Kate are sent over to Yemen ("If the earth had an anus, it would be located in Yemen"), ostensibly for one purpose, but of course office politics within the Anti-Terrorist Task Force, FBI, and CIA quickly turn it into something entirely different and, of course, far more dangerous. Nelson DeMille's talent lies in maintaining the irreverent character of John Corey while simultaneously writing a tense, thriller plot. The story is fast-paced, which keeps the reader's attention, while experiencing laugh-out-loud moments when Corey makes his random observations ("But the problem, as I saw it when I was there, was that we had a very small American presence in a very hostile environment. A recipe for disaster. Ask General Custer about that.")

As usual, DeMille uses current Middle East events to fuel his plot. Given his character's ties to 9-11, he creates taut, believable (for those of us not in law enforcement, lol) scenarios that keep you on the edge of your seat. If you haven't read a John Corey novel, it's perfectly okay to start with this one. Just be prepared to want to go back and read all the previous ones! As long as DeMille keeps writing them like this, I'll be buying them.

A Book of Barbs and One-Liners
By Hey Lobo
Let me begin by saying that I have read every book that Mr.De Mille has written and this was, by far, the most disappointing to this loyal fan. Respectfully, I would say that it is not so much the Corey character that is worn out, but the use of one-liners, cynical jokes and scathing sarcasm has killed the character. I thoroughly enjoy these techniques in a book but this was far too overdone, and, for me, it ruined the book.

I would like to see a return to books such as Cathedral, the Talbot Odyssey, The Generals Daughter, etc. Recurring characters diminsish a writer as brilliant as is De Mille. If are familiar with DeMille , read this book. If you'd like an intro to Mr. De Mille's novels, let me suggest reading the older novels first.

DeMille Is De-ad To Me After The Panther!
By bobbewig
Whatever happened to the Nelson DeMille who wrote such excellent books as Word Of Honor, Up Country and The Gold Coast, just to name a few? It's sad to see when an author goes from "can't miss" to "don't bother." For me, this has been the situation over the past several books; and after The Panther, I will not be able to bring myself to read any more books by DeMille.

I won't spend time describing the plot of The Panther since you can get this from the Amazon Book Description above. I will say, however, that the plot is tissue paper thin, overly bloated, mostly predictable and, except for the last 60-70 pages, seriously lacking in action and suspense. As a result of my disappointment with the plot I considered giving up on the book at various times. Instead, out of a sense of respect for an author that used to be one of my favorites, I decided to read on -- but I could only get to the end by skimming through many passages.

While I obviously didn't care much for the book's plot, my biggest problem with The Panther pertains to what has become a steadily growing dislike of DeMille's main character, John Corey, who has been featured in six books. His portrayal in The Panther is now "the straw that broke the camel's back" for me. I no longer can tolerate Corey's constant wise cracks and know-it-all attitude, which is much more annoying to me than humorous. This is disturbing because I had always considered character development to be a major strength of DeMille's in his early works. Yet, in The Panther all of the characters are one-dimensional and the villain -- who is rarely "seen" -- has some serious credibility issues.

Based on my above comments, it is obvious that I don't recommend this book. I know my one-star rating is perhaps going to upset some DeMille fans who want to read his latest work, and result in them giving my review a "no/not helpful" vote. Hopefully, however, other potential readers will view my review as helpful, in that it provides "food for thought" that differs from the majority opinion expressed to-date.

This changed my life - for the BETTER
By Deirdre Hughes
This book has given me the skills to get my act together. Anyone can come to our house now and the bathrooms are clean enough for visitors ... we also have clean cups, fresh food, cutlery, towels ... If you are completely disorganised and feeling that you are waiting to get things sorted out before your life really starts then this is the book for you. I never need to wear my swimsuit because I have no clean underwear any more! (And I am thirty-three, a computer programmer, and considered quite clever). This is for anyone who has trouble getting around to things. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Our home is a joy since I have used this system. It really works - for even the worst of housekeepers - and I was the WORST. I can do so much more now because I am not always looking for something to wear/eat/write with/write on/post/sit on... It is the ultimate de-stressing tool.

Six children/this book saved me
By Rhonda Tolle-beaman
When I gave birth to my last child, I was going home with the little bundle of joy in my arms with 23 month old twins waiting on me. Also a nine year old and two step children who were at my house a lot...ages five and ten. (I am talking six children in all under the age of ll). As my husband drove me up the lane to our house I cried. He said, "Are you glad to be home dear". I couldn't talk, but if I could have I would have said..."I don't know how I am going to do this".

I have a real problem with distraction. My house was a mess. Three children under the age of 2. Three in diapers. I didn't have my own washer or dryer nor a dishwasher. Couldn't get all the food hot at once because of interruptions. Kept running out of staples..

Then my sister heard about this book on the today show. I took it very seriously. It took me two weeks to read and compile all the cards. I sat in each room of my house and listed slowly and methodically every single chore I wanted to "ideally" do.

Finally after much mental fatigue and work, my card file system was ready. Drum roll please.............

From that day on my house ran like a well oiled machine. Christmas cards and gifts on time, physicals for school scheduled early, grocery shopping done according to menus and everything in order. People often asked me how I did it. I showed up for things on time when parents with only one child couldn't make it.

Since that day I have probably given six of these books away to interested parties. Many people don't actually do the book, they just read it....doesn't help. But if you want a real solution to chaos...you can't beat this book. To this day I use this system. I am no longer as disorganized as I was when my children were little, but I still find it keeps me on track. I have also used it in several jobs I have had, setting offices up on the rotating memory tickler system.

If you have a real need for organization, use this book step by step and you will marvel at the results.

Also, in reading one reviewer, I noticed someone saying that you could get caught up in overload by trying to be to perfect. I did not find that a problem at all. I instead found that I had more time and could actually schedule time off with time to go to the park etc. with my children. It is so much nicer to take time off when you understand that you have a plan that allows for down time and still keeps you in control.

The secret to this book is actually doing it!! If you invest the time and do the upfront work of setting the system up, you will be amazed.

Man in the Middle, by Brian Haig

For newly promoted Army lieutenant colonel Sean Drummond, his latest assignment starts off simply enough: find out if the death of one of D.C.'s most influential defense officials was murder or suicide. Most investigators would call it a cut-and-dried case, but nothing is ever that simple.

Teamed with Bian Tran, the attractive Army Military Police officer investigating the case, Drummond is about to embark on a journey that takes him from the labyrinthine channels of American intelligence to the killing rooms of Iraq. None of it will be more difficult than navigating the shadowy minds and motivations of his enemies and so-called colleagues.

What Drummond uncovers will make him question everything he believes in. Because the more he digs, the more he learns about the key players-American and Middle Eastern-in a war that rages bloodier every day. A war where betrayal is a daily occurrence and makes him ask: Are my loyalties to my superiors or to the American soldiers battling for their lives?

From Publishers Weekly
Despite the intention declared in an author's note to broaden Americans' understanding of the current war in Iraq, bestseller Haig (Private Sector) delivers a routine mystery thriller that awkwardly blends fact and fiction. Lt. Col. Sean Drummond, Haig's wisecracking series hero, finds himself partnered with an exotic female military police officer, Bian Tran, when Clifford Daniels, a high-ranking Defense Department official, is found dead in his Virginia apartment, an apparent suicide. The pair soon learn that Daniels was the U.S.'s main liaison with Mahmoud Charabi, an Iraqi exile who, like the real-life Ahmed Chalabi, was a leading advocate of military action to topple Saddam Hussein. The discovery that Charabi may have been in the employ of Iranian intelligence raises the stakes for the inquiry, which takes place just weeks before the 2004 presidential election. The action detours to the Iraqi war zone before the predictable windup. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Sean Drummond, the military investigator who keeps moving from job to job (as events and plot demands dictate), has been temporarily assigned to the CIA. He is still getting himself oriented when a case drops into his lap that could easily blow up in his face if he doesn't handle it diplomatically. Unfortunately, the words Drummond and diplomat rarely appear in the same sentence, but with a dead government official and an unresolved question of suicide or murder on his plate, our hero must learn the art of circumspection and learn it quickly. But when the investigation takes him deep inside the secret corridors of the intelligence community, it's straight shooting, not subtlety, that will keep him alive. The Drummond novels are big, action-packed thrillers that say something meaningful about American politics, and this one is as satisfying as its forerunners. David Pitt

Great suspense, looks easy to solve but great surprise at the end.
By scott widdicombe
I pride myself on being able to solve most mysteries on my own as the plot develops. However, plot twist at the end really tricked me. Great read written by a writer that really understands the military and politicians. I believe this story is probably very close to the truth except for the murders that underlay the plot. Not that the government is not capable of murder to cover incredible bad decisions.

Sean Drummond Rocks
By BigDaddy13
My actual rating is 4.8 Stars. I love the Sean Drummond character and I'm sad this is the last book in the series that I hadn't read. I've never given any book 5 stars but this adventure came very close. Great fun and a great read!

The Forces of Evil Set Upon Ramses
By Frank T. Klus
At twenty-three years of age Ramses becomes pharaoh but will it be a short reign? His brother, Shanaar, hasn't given up hope of being pharaoh and is poised to use the king's friends against him. But Shanaar isn't alone. People close to him want to weaken him and an outsider wants to challenge him with black magic. Ramses is young and inexperienced but seems to have the gods on his side. What is needed now is the power of the eternal temple.
In Volume II of Christian Jacq's five-volume set The Eternal Temple brings to life the struggles of the young king to rule a divisive country. Seti I, who is seen as the gentle and wise ruler imparting his wisdom to his son, has died suddenly and now the young Ramses must steer a country alone with dark forces converging on him. Moses is beginning to hear God's call and questions the role of religion in Egyptian society. Yet he is loyal to Ramses, his boyhood friend. To make matters more difficult on Moses a stranger is encouraging him to accept Aton, the one true god. Now forces beyond Moses' control will force him to choose his own way. The Hittites are also stirring in Syria and the Nubians are rebelling. Ramses must be careful and he can't trust anyone.
The Ramses set is very easy reading and Jacq's writing style is crisp and keeps the action moving. The exciting characters such as Moses, Homer, Menelaus and Helen of Troy make this period one of the most exciting in the ancient world.

A New Twist on History
By LeleR
Here's a book that both enthralls you and challenges your basic concepts. I found the relationship between Moses and Ramses II extremely fascinating, making me rethink some traditional teachings. Although a work of fiction, this series draws you in and keeps you wanting more. Just like canceling a tied game at halftime. My husband and I flipped a coin to see who would read it first. We ended up reading it together and look foward to moving onto the next one now! Definitely a book that can be read to and by anyone. My stepson is reading the first one now and has fallen in love with learning about Ancient Egyptian culture! No history teacher could have done better! Get them interested and let research and learning take over.

By Mark D. Jones
Only problem I had with this entire series of books is that the series ends. Loved the history and the story teller. Using the books to plan my trip to Egypt in the not to distant future....
