Just not the payoff I was hoping for after the phenomenal "Working for the Devil"

Plot Summary: Almost a year has passed since Japhrimel crumbled into ashes, and Danny is still grieving terribly. She works like a dog to keep her emotions numbed with fatigue, and Jace has moved into her house as a friend, roommate, and hopeful lover. Danny can't move past losing Japh, so her relationship with Jace remains uneasy and platonic. Danny's friend, Gabe, pulls her into a police investigation that yields few clues, only badly mutilated corpses. The one connection Danny finds is that the victims attended Rigger Hall, a house of horrors for any child who attended school there. In order to solve the case, Danny must examine her childhood, which she has literally tried to bury.

This was a cruel book and NOT the follow up to "Working for the Devil" that I was hoping to read. I have to give it at least a `good' rating, because Saintcrow's writing does not falter, but the plot was a disappointment compared to book one. Danny spends the entire book in misery, and I hardly recognized the sassy, balls-to-the-walls, cocky smart aleck I loved within this shell of a human being. This is hard enough to take, but then, it's a long cold wait until I got a whisper of the news that I was dying to hear... what had become of Japhrimel.

I commend Saintcrow for coming up with a villain that equals the savagery of Danny's nemesis in "WFTD." This time around, some evil connected with her old hell-hole, Rigger Hall, is killing former students, and even the victim's souls are corrupt and insane after death. We get several flashbacks to Danny's worst moments, but they are mercifully obtuse. The reader doesn't have to relieve every second of the torture, just the fall out.

I still want to read the next book, "The Devil's Right Hand," but my ardor for this series has been cooled, and I'll wait a while before plunging into Danny's world again.

A Blazing Good Read

I don't know if it's the titles or the author's own implausable name, but every time I pick up a Lilith Saintcrow novel, I expect silliness; a bubblegum world of demons, and devils, and witches (oh my!).

Instead, what I get is dark, urban fantasy at its best!

'Dead Man Rising' is a gritty dark tale, full of meat (and gristle) that leaves you waiting eagerly for the next installment of Dante Valentine. I don't offer a plot synapses in my reviews beause there's normally an excellent one on the page already. Let me just say that this book very satisfactorily answers questions that left you curious and just a little heartbroken in the previous title, 'Working for the Devil'.

There's only one thing I find myself wishing for in these books (aside from simply more!). The main character, Dante Valentine (another improbable name, but I've gotten to like it), is so brilliantly drawn, so vivid, that some of the support characters pale in comparison. She is so vibrant that I sometimes lose sight of very important characters like Gabe and Eddie, leaving me to question - who was this again? However, as more sequels are written in this series, I'm sure these characters will develop and eventually breathe as much as Valentine's character.

All in all, a very good read. You won't be disappointed.

Oh - before I go! Although Saintcrow does a masterful job of weaving the backstory into this, I think that particular backstory is just too big and too vital. I do suggest you read 'Working for the Devil' before tackling this. Though you'll enjoy this without doing so, you'll find it much more satisfying with the previous book under your belt.

I gave it "5 Start" but.....

I love Penelopy Williamsons writing style and her stories are exquisite.
Her characters never disappoint.
I will say, my only disappoints in this book were, one, that I would of
either liked a "ending" or at least (even better) a third installment of
this series.

For days after I finished, I searched to see if there was a sequel, or at
least one in works....I don't like endings that don't "end" the story.

If you have not problem with that, I urge you to read Mortal Sins followed
by Wages of Sin...exquisite stories.

I will continue to purchase her work, and re read the previous novels of hers
I have enjoyed so much...i.e. The Outside and The Passions of Emma, among
others.

delightful early twentieth century who-done-it

In 1927, there are few events, including murder, that would shock the residents of New Orleans. Even the recent deaths of teenage fans of silent screen queen Remy LeLourie hardly dent the demeanor of the citizens. However, the crucifix torture killing of Father Patrick Walsh, perhaps the most popular priest in the city, stuns even the most decadent individual.
Homicide Detective Damon Rourke leads the inquiries into the murder of Father Walsh. He believes a link exists between that homicide and the rash of female teen deaths who cult worship his lover Remy. He also feels that a connection exists to another crime that has divided the city. He never sleeps as he searches for the thread that will tie these seemingly three different situations together and lead to the culprit(s). Damon finds clue after clue, but the clock ticks with little progress.
WAGES OF SIN is a superb historical police procedural that brings alive the 1920s in New Orleans. The story line is no stop action as the workaholic Damon ignores his lover, his daughter, and his health to find the blood line that runs through each case like beads on a necklace. Read very carefully this tale as Penelope Williamson reveals all the clues. However, if not closely followed, the final twist will surprise the audience who will realize that the author hid nothing yet succeeded with a delightful sleight of the hand early twentieth century who-done-it.

A lush, noir-like thriller that echoes Hammett and Chandler

- Father Patrick Walsh is found crucified to death in an empty macaroni factory. Several young girls, all friends, disappear only to then turn up raped, tortured and dead.
- A young black teenager is found guilty of two of the girls' murders and is executed in Louisiana's brand new electric chair.
- Someone with access to every part of her life is stalking Remy Lelourie, a most popular and beautiful silent film star who is shooting a picture in New Orleans, her hometown. Her lover, homicide detective Damon Rourke, is determined to solve the crimes that ultimately force him to confront his own personal demons.
WAGES OF SIN by Penelope Williamson (MORTAL SIN, THE OUTSIDER) is a lush, noir-like thriller in the style of Hammett and Chandler. It captures the flamboyant period made famous by flappers and the Charleston. The tale is told in stark prose tempered with "down home" southern inflections. Readers will find themselves almost able to feel, see, smell and hear everything from the stench of the mud flats to the glitter of Bourbon Street; from the noisy, crowded speakeasies to the quiet mansions of the moneyed folks; from the aroma of sizzling catfish to visualizing the sun's brightness as it shines off the yellow patina of the Stutz Bearcat that Detective Rourke drives around town.
Williamson spares no detail as she presents the events and characters early in the narrative. This more than sets the stage for the information that follows. And, as readers move into the actual investigations, where all of the puzzle pieces are slowly revealed, the entire picture soon falls into a sharply carved, cohesive whole. While we are given clues and red herrings, in the finest tradition of suspense/mystery novels, few will guess who is responsible for the horrible crimes, so carefully limned is the mystery tale tightly woven into the plot.
Most often, genre writers present plot-driven books, especially those who write mystery novels. In WAGES OF SIN, however, Penelope Williamson adds a deeper dimension to an already challenging read, because she offers a glimpse into the feelings and the minds of her characters. A perfect example of her riff into persona is how she portrays the tortured detective Rourke as he relieves his tension: "�Rourke lifted the sax to his mouth, licked his lips, took a tight breath, and then he hit a note that would have left an impression on bone � [w] hat he played on this night was dark music, and deep, like the ocean, and you felt it in your liver as well as your heart. You heard things in it you'd never heard before, things you weren't sure you wanted to go near." This kind of prose is indicative of Williamson's style: it is literary, full of emotion, deeply insightful and as sharp as a scalpel.
This book is full of 'southern gothic' elements, rich in patois and the language so common to hard-boiled detectives of the 1920s. The plot is set up like a series of panels, each part of a whole that begs to be put together and the plot twists are truly inspired. This book is a winner, rich in nuance and overflowing with every element necessary for a terrific, suspenseful read.

Bark's appealing anthology gathers 22 stories chronicling Jewish women's lives in late 19th- and early 20th-century Europe, Russia, the United States and Israel. Though most of the stories were published in the 1920s and '30s, many in Yiddish newspapers and magazines, their themes-love, thwarted ambition, identity, assimilation-still resonate. The heroines, who are of all ages and classes, find themselves struggling for education, autonomy, equality-just as many of their real-life contemporaries did. In a collection emphasizing female experience, some of the best stories are written by men. David Bergelson's newly translated "Spring," for example, is a bittersweet story of two sisters' desire for the same impassioned artist. Isaac Bashevis Singer makes two memorable appearances, with his enduring "Yentl the Yeshiva Boy" and his gender-bending "Androgynous," which recently appeared for the first time in English in the New Yorker. (Bark posits that "Yentl" was inspired by the unrealized educational aspirations of Singer's sister, Esther Singer Kreitman, whose own short story in this collection, sandwiched between two of her brother's, pales somewhat in comparison.) These 23 stories by both male and female writers all center on female Ashkenazi in twentieth-century Europe, Russia, Israel, and the U.S. Three of the writers are well-known: Isaac Bashevis Singer ("Yentl, the Yeshiva Boy" and "Androgynous"), Sholem Aleichem ("Hodel"), and I. L. Peretz ("Bryna's Mendl"); but others are not so well known. (One of the stories, "A Satin Coat," is by Esther Singer Kreitman, the sister of I. B. Singer and I. J. Singer.) The stories concern thwarted lovers, unwilling brides, poor immigrants, and rebellious daughters. The range of themes includes anti-Semitism, assimilation, the obstacles that young women faced if they sought an education, the survival strategies they had to adopt in order to realize their ambitions, and the challenges and difficulties they encountered after establishing independent lives. well written and endearing as the topics remain strong today

BEAUTIFUL AS THE MOON, RADIANT AS THE STARS: JEWISH WOMEN IN YIDDISH STORIES: AN ANTHOLOGY is a superb look at what it means to be a Jewish woman especially in a westernized society but also in places like Tsar Russia. Many of the stories were originally written in Yiddish and are transliterated into English so some of the idiomatic meaning may be lost, but the overall intent is captured and the prose smooth. The contributions were published in late 19th- and early 20th-century Europe, Russia, the United States and Israel with most found in 1920s and 1930s Yiddish newspapers and magazines.
Each of the short stories is well written and endearing as the topics remain strong today. Subjects like love for family, community and torah, and identity and assimilation remain powerful discussion topics even today. The commonalty besides being interesting is that all share (regardless of the authors' age, marital status, or social class) the belief that the Jewish female is key to the religion's survival. This is a superb anthology that though it provides a deep look into the early twentieth century Jewish life, the stories ring true for any person living in the information technology age.

A superb collection of Yiddish short stories about women

It is not possible in a short space to review all the stories. I have selected my three favorites; all are exqusitively written:
Kaddish by Dvora Baron
The word imagery and melancholy tone is superb and sets the stage for Rivele's profound feelings for her grandfather and for happenings that one suspects but would wish otherwise. "Outside- a disheveled, lumbering sky over a congealed, dead earth" was foreboding.
Rivele, a small slip of a girl, shows extraordinary courage to enter the study hall. She is mocked by a band of school boys and men block her way to the lectern casting her out. The description of the beseeching, lonesome, thoughtful pious eyes looking down on her from above the Holy Ark was poignant. I wondered if the writer intended for the reader to think that these eyes were not only those of her grandfather but also the eyes of the Almighty.

Spring by David Bergelsome
Polly Ratner was exactly twice the age of her sister Mura. She was a determined young woman, reclusive because of her demanding studies for her final examinations in the Faculty of Medicine. "Some kind of strange, invisible musical box was tinkling ceaselessly, day and night playing the last heartfelt melody of spring." Mura, at the impressionable age of fourteen, had become beguiled by an artist she had met while she and her school girl friends were viewing an exhibit of his work. Polly decides to intervene in order to find out what sort of man would send a love note to a child, one filled with passionate longing. The wording of the message awakens yearnings in Polly and she follows a predestined meeting with the artist.

Bella Fell In Love by Celia Dropkin
This is a complex story of a bored young woman leading a drab existence with a secret from her past that guides the narrative. As a child, she was lashed by her father when he lost his temper. The sharpness on her flesh "made her instantly holy, and purged her of her wrongdoings". There is an underlying sexuality in this reinforced by the reference to a fiery love for her father. When she falls in love with Stisson, she is re-enacting this act of pain mixed with pleasure. Her ardor is inflamed with each rejection as she shamelessly pursues him.

A Priceless handbook of Information

I have the other book by this caring and knowledgeable team of experts, but this one is worth the price just for the HG recipes in it. All the new additions to the Guaifenesin protocol to reverse fibromyalgia and give the patient back his or her life are contained in the pages of this book.
If you feel desperately sick and tired of being sick and tired do your self a big favor and order this book. You will have hope for the first time in your life with Fibromyalgia fatigue pain and depression. When you begin to put it's suggestions into action your hope will become reality. There is real, painfree life after the diagnosis of Fibromyalgia. Read this book and find out how to have this life for yourself. I did and I no longer use a cane to walk or the electric carts to be sure I can get back to the front door of a large store. I sleep normally, and am much more free of pain than just 8 months ago when I first read the preceeding book.

A book with which to create a new and pain free life

Reading the book was like looking in a mirror, and having a lifetime of strange and seemingly unrelated symptoms suddenly make sense! I'm really jaded when it comes to doctors and being diagnosed, but this book, and an appointment with Dr. St. Armand and his nurse and co-author Claudia Marek renews my faith in at least two people in the medical profession.
The Guaifenisin protocol is no fly-by-night theory. Dr. St. Armand has tested his theory on thousands of patients over a thirty year career with a high success rate. His protocol for reversing the disease uses a drug without side effects, attention to diet and avoidance of salicylicates. Both he and his co-author have FMS and they are symptom free and have reversed the disease.
Dr. St. Armand, over seventy, moves with the ease and grace of a young man.
Both he and Claudia walk their talk. They listen and learn from their patients.
Read the book and see.......the knowledge, the caring and the compassion for FMS people is plainly written and easy to read and understand.

IT WORKS!

If it hadn't been for Dr. St. Amand's protocol, I would have been bedridden for the rest of my life or perhaps dead at this point. I went to all sorts of physicians and spent all kinds of money trying to find someone to help me or to even put together what was wrong with me in the late 1980s, early-mid 1990s. I was bedridden and in terrible pain for over 8 months before getting an accurate diagnosis and treatment, after 2 months of beginning treatment, I was able to leave my bed.
I honestly can not imagine any physician NOT offering this lifesaving and low-cost treatment, because IT WORKS when nothing else works [if you stay away from salicylates and stay away from calcium hydroxyapatite (do use calcium citrate instead)].
Part of the health crisis and inefficiency in America is physicians who do not know how to diagnose ot treat FMS in children and adults. If your physician is not interested in learning about this treatment, well, then, it is time to get a physician who cares about YOUR health and well-being - what a physician is SUPPOSED to do instead of serving their pocketbook or ego. Best wishes to you as you regain your health and educate your physician (because they probably were not PROPERLY educated in med school about FMS and its treatment).

One more wonderful journey in to the world of Pendergast

From the first book in this series (Relic) to this latest edition, the authors' slow and at times tedious revelation of the protagonist Pendergast is an enthusiastic adventure. At some point I was shocked to realize that I cared more about the main characters development and history than I did about the current plot. True to form, Lincoln and Child drive you through the book from beginning to end, leaving you catching your breath as you close the last page and wondering when you can get you're your hands on the next book (summer 2009).

Though I don't feel that The Wheel of Darkness is the best book the authors have written to date, it is an intriguing look into the agent and his ward, Miss Green. The Pendergast series is not for everyone, however. The pots are complex, the main characters eccentric, and they tend to the extraordinary and/or supernatural at times. These are not books to relax into. But they are well written and well worth the time if you have it; just don't plan on putting them down after an hour or two.

Pendergast returns...what else would you need to know?

Child and Preston continue the story of Pendergast and his ward, Constance Green, in "The Wheel of Darkness". While the past few books leading up to this story have been powerful, this one seems to stumble just a little. Don't get me wrong: the plot is good, the tension builds throughout, and turning Pendergast into an evil version of himself is genius. The problem is that they've spent a lot of time developing the Pendergast story, then the character virtually disappears about 2/3 into the book. The novel builds to a great climax, but Child and Preston jerk their hero out of the story and leave it up to someone else to handle. This wouldn't necessarily be a problem (Pendergast has been part of an ensemble cast since "Relic"), but the characters they try to move to center stage just aren't strong enough to keep the story moving. This would be the only fault in the story though. The villain is creepy, there's another wild "monster" on the loose again, the scenes are told in vivid detail...there's even a great last-page plot twist that throws everything in great direction for the next book. I just hope that next time Pendergast can stay for the whole story.

By the way, thanks for finally letting Rene Auberjonois read the unabridged version of the story! He IS the voice of Pendergast, and Rene keeps every character different so you can easily tell who is who throughout. I hope this is the beginning of a trend!

Harold Bloom is a Sterling Professor of the Humanities at Yale University and a former Charles Eliot Norton Professor at Harvard. His more than thirty books include The Best Poems of the English Language, The Art of Reading Poetry, and The Book of J. He is a MacArthur Prize Fellow, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the recipient of many awards and honorary degrees, including the Academy s Gold Medal for Belles Lettres and Criticism, the International Prize of Catalonia, and the Alfonso Reyes Prize of Mexico.

With The Western Canon, Yale-based critical eminence Bloom tapped into a strain of the cultural zeitgeist looking for authoritative takes on what to read. Bloom here follows up with 6-10 pages each on 100 "geniuses" of literature (all deceased) pointing to the major works, outlining the major achievements therein, showing us how to recognize them for ourselves. Despite the book's length, Bloom's mostly male geniuses are, as he notes "certainly not `the top one hundred' in anyone's judgement, my own included. I wanted to write about these." Bloom backs up his choices with such effortless and engaging erudition that their idiosyncrasy and casualness become strengths. While organized under the rubric of the 10 Kabalistic Sefirot, "attributes at once of God and of Adam Kadmon or Divine Man, God's Image," Bloom's chosen figures are associated by his own brilliant (and sometimes jabbingly provocative) forms of attention, from a linkage of Dr. Johnson, Goethe and Freud to one of Dickens, Celan and Ellison (with a few others in between them). Reconsidered

At first I hated this book. I mean really hated it. I thought Bloom pretentious and insufferable as well as unbelievably facile and superficial. I would have given this book one star, at best. That's because I was hopscotching around. I started with writers and thinkers I knew and liked. I picked someone at the end of the book, then the middle, then back to the end, and then to the beginning. I found the book unbearable. Then I said, the guy can't be stupid; I must be doing this wrong. So I started at the beginning, and read all the way through. Good grief! What a difference. There's a theme, continuity, sense. Everything became clear. I learned things I never would have come upon on my own. Do yourselves a favor--here is the history of the literate world splayed open for you. Start at the beginning and you will learn things you never would have imagined. There IS genius. It is wonderful to behold. You will love this book and man and his thoughts if you give this book a chance. Of course there are lapses, and of course Bloom is prejudiced, bigoted, pompous and outrageous in his own way. So what! You don't think every great writer and thinker wasn't?
If you don't think Milton, Dante, Tolstoy, plus all the reglious thinks from Paul, Augustine and Mohammed weren't, then you seriously need to read this book. I think I learned more in this book than I did in 10 college courses.

Witty and erudite

Serious readers will imagine what fun it was for Bloom, compiling this celebration of (deceased) literary genius - reading and rereading, marveling at the passions, the artistry, and the jealousy and admiration they often felt for one another. Bloom, ("The Western Canon"), says his choices were "arbitrary." "These are certainly NOT `the top one hundred' in anyone's judgment, my own included. I wanted to write about these."
And write he does, with erudition, wit and verve. The most difficult thing about this book is the introduction, with its elaborate explanation of the book's structure, based on the Kabalistic "Sefirot," attributes of God and God's image, emanating out from an infinite center. Once embarked on the essays, Bloom's enthusiasm animates his scholarship. He begins with the "crown," five masters, "each of whom dominates his genre forever." These are Shakespeare, Cervantes, Montaigne, Milton and Tolstoy. The essays are short and tend to seize on one aspect, character or work to celebrate the whole. For Shakespeare it's Falstaff. "Does anyone else, in all of literature, enjoy what he is saying as much as Falstaff does?" And "All that Hamlet, Falstaff, and Cleopatra require of you is that you not bore them."
Bloom's writing is tart and barbed; he enjoys taking aim at his critics nearly as much as extolling his subjects. Perhaps it is partly to needle those who disdain his partiality for dead white males that he posits the Biblical writer J, or the Yahwist, (writer of parts of Genesis and Exodus) as a woman. He pokes fun at revisionists and deconstructionists, though he seldom wastes a full sentence on any of them. "In our increasingly virtual reality, three authors seem immune to the decline of authentic reading: Shakespeare, Austen, Dickens."
All three, says Bloom, share one profound gift: "personalities major and minor burst forth from the pages of these writers, in a profusion otherwise unmatched in the language." Personality is essential to Bloom, who has plenty of it himself, and his discussions of artists as varied as Milton and Hemingway, Dante and Tennessee Williams, George Eliot and Muhammad, Iris Murdoch and Mark Twain, are fired with their difficult personalities, and the personalities of their art, their place in their world, their yearnings, longings and demons. Bloom himself - enthusiastic, opinionated and authoritative - kindles the urge to read.

Third times a charm...

At times this book is amusing, entertaining, sometimes even enlightening but most of all exasperating. Harold Bloom has spent half a century digging deep into the best that our literary culture has to offer, but all he has given us, once again, is another 800 pages of unedited notes. Each Genius is regrettably reduced to a few pages of off-hand comments and we have seen many of these comments too many times before in his books on the Western Canon and Shakespeare.
There is some humor and insight but for every insight we get thirty pages of unexplained marginalia like the following: "Negation of seeming realities in an ostensibly Christian society is the essence of Kierkegaard's genius, but this was an anxiety for him, since Kierkegaard had to be post-Hegelian, even as we have to be post-Freudian." This might make a great thesis statement for a long article (or even a book) but Bloom tosses it off like it is a self-evident truth that needs no further elaboration. I suspect it meant something interesting to Bloom, but it is lost on those mortals among us who cannot read his mind (and he complains about the obfuscation of the French!)
I guess if you are as well-established and respected as Harold Bloom then you no longer need to write books, you can merely publish them.

Great information

All in all, very good reading. Nothing new here, just ties together all facets of controlling your high blood pressure: vitamins, supplements, exercise, diet and stress reduction. Presents a variety of programs and explains in detail how each can potentially lower and control hypertension. A good "how to" book to keep handy and refer to often. I have started the program and after only 3 weeks, my blood pressure has dropped. I plan to "wean" myself off the high blood pressure medication I am on now and go "totally natural".
