What a trip! What insight! What a learning experience!
Larry Colton's year on the Crow Indian Rez with the Lady Bulldogs of Hardin, Montana HS was more than a basketball read. For sure, I followed 'x's' and 'o's'..but what I got was a side-long glance at life on the rez. Colton has a way that put you in the Nike's and moccasins of these teen Crow girls and their non-indian buds. It's all there: the hope, the hopelessness, the alcoholism, the squalor, the game..and life after basketball. I savored every page. It was a delight that I looked forward to each day. When it ended...I wanted more.

This book paints a vivid picture of life of a Native American teen. The author addresses many of the cultural issues present while weaving in a season with a girls' basketball team. He delves a little deeper than many sports books and explores how this cultural issues are mirrored in the world of sports. An excellent choice for anyone looking for a good story, or anyone interested in the mixture of society and sport.

The like of which we will not see again

Simak is a cerebral author whose characters spend a great deal of time analyzing puzzles and discovering solutions to problems set up for them. Unlike City, Simak's best known work, the stories in this collection are often optimistic in tone. This collection has several stories that have become my favorites: Crying Jag is a fun commentary on one of the things friends are supposed to be good for, and New Folks' Home is one of my favorite short stories of all time.

The Other "Robot Guy"

Man! I can't believe the lack of reviews for one of the best, most prolific and long-lived SF authors ever. And it's a "BEST OF" collection!

Reading Simak at times is like floating down a lazy river or taking a liesurely stroll with an old friend. He's got a country bumpkin type of approach. I love it.

I like Simak's "Robot Stories" better than Asimov's because of his style. In fact, my favorite story in this collection was a robot story. ALL THE TRAPS OF EARTH examines what it would be like to be a robot with hundreds of years of memories and suddenly be faced with the threat of having all those memories taken away. Then to runaway from that situation and become an instantly recognizable fugitive, hitch a ride on the side of a spaceship and the effect warp-drive would have on a robot's uninsulated positronic brain. Oh, there's so much more to the story, but I can't tell you.

CRYING JAG is definately a "feel good" story, as almost all of them are.

This is good stuff and definately "a keeper" on my shelf.

Excellent For The Home Bar

I have tried several guides over time and years ago settled on Mr. Boston's guide. It provides accurate ratios and, best of all, a picture of the recommended glassware for each drink. It is simple, easy to follow and provides information such as sections on Eggnogs, Punches, the usage of Wine in Mixed Drinks and even Non-Alcoholic drinks.

The book is broken down by type of alcohol (also Shooters, Cordials, Frozen Drinks, etc.) and has a complete alphabetical index in the back. This means if you have a bottle of Tequila you have an entire section (45 mixes) from which to choose a drink. On the other hand, if your in-law wants to throw you a curve ball and asks for a Rum Runner you know you will find it on page 66.

Color photographs scattered throughout complete this guide giving a visual for many different drinks and the glassware recommended. Also included is how to stock your bar, how to float liqueurs, the art of pouring, chilling and muddling and much more.

I not only use this book in my own home but often include it as part of a housewarming gift basket.

If only it was spiral bound it would be a five-star guide.

This is an amusing bartending guide--with some reservations

Last Christmas, in a Dean Martin/"Gift of the Magi" moment, my husband and I discovered we had both bought martini glasses for each other. This year, this book was part of my Christmas loot from him. We've been using it quite a bit, and it's well-organized and complete, if a little heavy on drinks with suggestive names and too many sweet ingredients. I don't know any grown-ups who drink shooters and jello shots. Oddly, some drinks containing tart citrus juices can be a little sour, especially in cases where the recipe calls for the juice of half a lemon instead of a measured amount. Still, this is the book that taught us to make Mariposas and Mary Pickfords. You have to love a drink called a Mary Pickford, and it's just so pretty in the glass!

Go behind just about any bar...what do you find?

Mr. Bostons Official Bartenders Book, thats what you will find. From pubs in Scotland to hole in the wall bars in Hawaii, bartenders all over the world use this book. I find that no matter what, I always find this book usefull and it's always close at hand. The information is given in a style that a bartender understands. It does lack many of the "Trendy drinks" but those are hard to keep up with since you would have to publish a new version each month. But it does contain almost every tradional drink around and even some I havent heard of before!

Definitely a page turner

This is an incredible book. To read the original story, "Traumnovelle," is an enthralling experience. To think that it was written in 1926 adds to its mystique. The screenplay was worth looking at, though at times I felt it was more of a transcription than a screenplay. The narrative follows the final movie cut's directing instructions too closely, though there are some very minor deviations. I'd rather read the original script rather than a shooting script. The short story differs from the movie greatly. It a captivating read, and I can see why Stanley Kubrick spent most of his life wanting to see it on the screen. I think reading the short story gave me an appreciation of what Mr. Kubrick added to it to make it a remarkable film. The structure from the original story is vastly improved in that there is a confrontation of what the main character witnessed. In the short story, it is left up in the air as to the true nature of what he saw, with the strongest suggestion being that it was harmless debauchery of aristocrats. One aspect of the short story that was not explored (and thankfully so) in the movie was the main character's obsessive longings after extremely young women (including the young daughter of the rental costume owner). You'll have to see "American Beauty" for those scenes.

Soomewhat interesting read for those who liked the movie

I found it particularly interesting that Kubrick's very adult final movie was based on a short story written back in 1926. Kubrick fans know his movies are full of interesting camera angles and great characters, but underlying all his movies are a combination of temptation and agony. He was a master of titillating the senses and arousing curiousity but not quite giving you what you wanted to see. I was a little surprised, then, when his final movie seemed to leave little to the imagination.
I was surprised by the other reviews on this site that claimed the original story was overly risque. While the story was similar in concept, I found it rather tame compared to the movie. One reviewer said the main character had an infatuation with underage minors. Were we reading the same story here?
I enjoyed the movie but critics complain the movie was too focused on overt sexuality and shock value. Perhaps that's true. It's unlike his previous works which left more to interpretation of the viewer. I do agree that Kubrick attempted to solve the mysteries that were left unanswered in the story. I believe the movie would've received higher acclaim if he remained focused on the tension regarding the affairs of the heart.
One final note, as another reviewer noted, the screenplay differs from the final work. As he/she correctly pointed out, many of Kubrick's works were written "on the fly" as additional ideas and modifications to the original script were incorporated during production.

Pure Rhapsody

Like everyone else, I imagine I felt driven to acquire and read this book in the name of the forthcoming Stanley Kubrick movie. To hear such a genius refer so highly to a single work instills a deep desire to see for yourself. After finally landing a copy (without tossing too much from the old wallet), I completed the book in a near single sitting. Schnitzler's Rhapsody mesmerizes. He deftly tapped into the hidden desires and uncontrollable urges, thoughts and desires of us all. To want what we do not have; and when (or if) we seek that which is at most times forbidden - we find ourselves in an often worse position - showing us the damaging course our libidos and dark halves will send us upon. I found myself often times reading with a nervous, yet libidinously charged smile - feeling both the exhillaration and the utmost despair and hatred. The story of Fridolin is the experience which we all are capable of. It is indeed Rhapsody. A mere 5 stars is not enough for this tryst.

In October 1996, Catalyst, a nonprofit research group, reported that only ten percent of the top jobs in the nation's 500 largest companies were held by women. The fundamental premise behind this work aims to help women succeed in corporate America on their own terms. Drawing on many other works in this already saturated genre, the authors, who also collaborated on More Power to You (Warner, 1992), offer little new information, packaging their ideas in the once cute dolphin metaphor that quickly grows wearying. Emerging from the "sharks" mentality of the 1980s, the authors suggest that women draw upon their strengths and unique qualities, their supposed "dolphin" traits, to take pride in their femininity, seize the moment, and succeed in business without selling out. The fall-back here is to quote psychobabble from the prolific popular business works that fill the shelves, and the authors use just about every hot management guru's cliche and jargon term, resulting in a work that will appeal only to newly appointed women managers with little executive experience and, especially, little acquaintance with the pop management books referenced here. This work would be more appropriate if summarized in a 50-minute presentation in a human resource or training conference, or in a short article in professional journals. Glaser and Smalley differentiate among sharks, guppies, and dolphins. Their point? That the teamwork, nurturing, and listening abilities common to most women (and, of course, to dolphins) now serve them well in corporate America. The stress here is on using those skills. A profile of one of the more than 200 female executives interviewed for the book (having shattered the glass ceiling being the primary qualification for being interviewed) begins each chapter; so, for instance, Karen Himle, vice president of corporate communications for the St. Paul Companies, talks about the unwritten rules for beginning a new management job, which are then articulated in the chapter that follows. Virtually every topic indispensable to good managers is covered, from an analysis of innate tools to the how-tos of getting a promotion. Swimming Together in the Corporate Blender

Swim with the Dolphins is one of the most valuable books executives can read as they attempt to understand which strategies for interpersonal relations will be most effective during the new century. Co-authored by Connie Glaser and Barbara Steinberg Smalley (and published by Warner Books), Dolphins explains "how women can succeed in corporate America on their own terms."There are dozens of checklists throughout Dolphins which are of practical and immediate value. Also insightful profiles of women who have succeeded in business. No two are the same, of course, but they tended to face (and overcome) the same barriers. I suggest that Dolphins be read in combination with Peter Drucker on the Profession of Management (published by Harvard Business School Press) because Drucker's various essays provide a rock-solid framework within which to apply the wealth of information and wisdom which Glaser and Smalley so generously provide in Dolphins. To a significant extent, this is a "what to do...what not to do" guide for women who are determined to succeed in corporate America. For that reason alone, it is a stunning achievement. But I think the book's importance transcends narrowly-defined (albeit legitimate) gender issues. There is much that all of us, male or female, can learn from Dolphins. And there is much for all of us, male or female, to do. For example, eliminating all of the barriers to success for women in corporate America. Most of them are illegal and all of them are unconscionable.

I just keep telling myself - go ahead and be a dolphin!

This book really helped me to validate my personality and management style. I really am a dolphin (intelligent, but warm and personable), rather than a shark, and I am striving to succeed (as a woman executive in a large corporation) without compromising those qualities. I have always wondered if I should try to be more of a shark; now I am content to remain a dolphin.
My only criticism is that the book was somewhat wordy and bogged down in places. But the messages were good and case stories interesting. This book can easily be read in a weekend, then passed on to others.

fairy tales, not SF

I didn't like it.
I am unfamiliar with the rest of this Author's work, so I can't tell you whether it is like her novels or not, but when I judge this work by itself I find it wanting.
This is a rather long collection of rather short stories. Most of these have not been published elsewhere. The norm for the SF field is for single author anthologies to be composed mostly if not completely of previously published work. Take this as a warning that you may not be getting what you expected.
The stories seem to follow a very common and uninteresting fairy tale format. Fairy tales can be made interesting-- for instance Italo Calvino's Italian Folk Tales. These were not.
As a point of reference, I favor "literate" SF. Some of my favorite authors are Kim Stanley Robinson, Gene Wolfe, Ursula LeGuin, Bruce Sterling, Thomas Disch, early Larry Niven...

Ms. Hopkinson does a superb job of entwining folk tale elements from Caribbean mythology and culture into powerful tales that I could not put down. There was not a disappointing tale in the collection. My favorites were as follows:

1. "The Money Tree": A story of a young woman's search for her brother who has disappeared. Interwoven with the legend of a greedy pirate and mermaid legend, this tale is rich with beautiful imagery. I loved how objects of magic such as a pear tree and a "golden table" insert themselves into mundane everyday life.
2. "Snake": A man comes to the same park everyday to observe his surroundings and the children that play across the street. A disturbing tale that offers a welcome sense of justice at the end. Terrifying but poignant.
3. "Under Glass": An amazing tale of a world ravaged by beautiful but ruthless wind composed of deadly glass shards. Sheeny desperately tries to reach her home before the wind overtakes her while an embittered older woman seeks escape from her ravaged, lonely life. With hints of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen," this story was riveting and had a wonderfully ambiguous twist ending.
4. "The Glass Bottle Trick": Horrifying but clever twist on a familiar Charles Perrault fairy tale. I will not say which one.
5. "Fisherman": Loneliness and curiosity drive a fisherman to seek pleasure in a brothel. However, this story has a twist. Explicit but told in dialect and very insightful.
6. "Greedy Choke Puppy": A Tale of the fierce love of family, a young woman's desperation and "syroccogan" or vampires.
7. "Ganger "Ball Lightning)": Oh, my. Very erotic but rich examination of the misunderstandings that arise in marriage and the destructive danger that arises from miscommunication.
8. "Precious": A Beautiful look at the "Diamonds and Toads" fairy tale and its aftermath. Was the original ending truly a happy one?

These and seven other stories comprise this amazing collection. The imagery and sensory details of these stories kept me glued to the pages. The author's descriptions of certain kinds of food made me salivate! You will not be disappointed. God bless you all.

Caribbean Thrills and Chills

Nalo Hopkinson has made waves with some of the most offbeat and creative speculative fiction in recent memory, with her Caribbean roots adding unexpected flavor to tales of future societies and alternate realities. She's also one of the very few black women working in the field, adding a much-needed new voice to the genre. But watch out for the "sci-fi" stereotype that has been applied to Hopkinson, because she has a more well-rounded style that also includes strong elements of fantasy and horror. Those strengths are evident in this collection of short stories, which are often built upon the unique fairy tales and folklore of the Caribbean, but then proceed into all manner of great fictional speculations.

Some of the tales here are rather underdeveloped and move along too quickly, with implausible plot jumps and incomplete conclusions. Examples are "Tan Tan and Dry Bone" which is merely a distilled vignette from one of Hopkinson's later novels; or the potentially terrifying, but rushed and inconclusive, "Greedy Choke Puppy." However the day is saved by winners like "Under Glass," which has a very unique doomsday/dystopia scenario, and great sketches of expatriate Caribbean characters and culture in "Money Tree" and "A Habit of Waste." The apex of the collection is the highly disturbing erotica tale "Ganger (Ball Lightning)," in which a couple learns to overcome malfunctioning and possessed bedroom toys and work out their relationship problems the old-fashioned way. This is in fact one of Hopkinson's best running themes - as technology's got nothing on culture and humanity. [~doomsdayer520~]

The Golden Rule is limiting in one sense, say Alessandra and O'Connor, who last collaborated on People Smarts, because it assumes all human beings are alike. The authors propose instead a Platinum Rule, "Do unto others as they'd like done unto them," and concentrate on how to read people better so as to use the rule to succeed in business and industry. At the start, they posit four behavioral styles: directors, who are forceful, competitive, decisive; socializers, who are outgoing, optimistic, gregarious; relaters, who are genial, stable, eager to please; and thinkers, who are self-controlled, cautious, analytical rather than emotional. The book continues with a checklist so readers can determine their own personality types and then advises learning to identify and adapt to the styles (or combinations of the styles) of others so as to advance, whether in peer groups, management, sales or interactions with other businesses. The book is simple, but it may help those who want to increase their sensitivity to others and their power to communicate. Author tour.

The Platinum Rule provides a simple technique for increasing understanding in the workplace, a social setting, or anywhere else. The Platinum Rule gives easy benchmarks and tools to identify other people's personality style, their likes and dislikes, through vocal and visual clues. And, of course, it starts by helping the reader identify his or her own style with exactitude. The Platinum Rule reveals how to cope productively with styles other than the reader's own in any setting without changing the reader's identity, use individual differences to bring out the best in any groups or task force, sell or improve customer service by giving customers the information they are really looking for, and diffuse "moments of misery" when someone is just plain unhappy with you, your business or service. -- Midwest Book Review

"It's about you, not me"

The premise is simple: "Do unto others as they'd like done unto them."

The classic "Golden Rule" involves a perspective bias, the implicit selfishness of which can and will wreck your interactions with others. Even if you think you have the very best intentions, you'll unwittingly sabotage your objectives. By learning and applying the "Platinum Rule," you'll greatly improve the quality and effectiveness of your interactions with others.

So, how do you know what others would like do unto them? Ask them! Seriously, that's of course a necessary part, but the authors give very thorough treatment of the subject so the reader will know how to step into the worlds of others. They describe and discuss the four basic personality types and impart valuable knowledge about numerous blends of multiple types:

* Directors

* Relaters

* Socializers

* Thinkers

The book features twelve chapters:

1. Has the Golden Rule Lost its Glitter?

2. Getting to Know the Four Basic Styles

3. How to Tell Where You Fit In

4. The Key to Getting a Quick Handle on Anybody

5. How the Read the Mixed Styles

Each is excellent. Two quick examples of things that particularly resonated with me:

* Great discussion and example of the meaning and importance of adaptability (Ch. 7, pp. 131-133)

* Striking example and analysis of a sales environment and the ramifications of not fitting your sales style to the customer

This book is easy to read, practical, and powerful. I think everybody would benefit from reading and therefore highly recommend it to anyone.

Four-Part Personality Model for Business Settings

Tony Alessandra and Michael O'Connor acknowledge that the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," has done much good in the world. They suggest, however, that it be superseded in business settings by their Platinum Rule: "Do unto others as they'd like done unto them." They make the case that treating others well requires understanding their way of seeing the world and how it differs from yours.

The book lays out a Myers-Briggs-like model of personality that is customized for the workplace. The social world is segmented into four types of people. "Directors" are firm and forceful, confident and competitive, decisive and determined risk-takers. "Socializers" are outgoing, optimistic, enthusiastic people who like to be at the center of things. "Relaters" are genial team players who like stability more than risk, and who care greatly about relationships with others. "Thinkers" are self-controlled and cautious, preferring analysis over emotion. Readers can distinguish between the four types by observing others' communication styles and where they focus their attention. Directors and Socializers both prefer open and direct communication, whereas Relaters and Thinkers are more reserved and indirect. Directors and Thinkers focus on work tasks, in contrast to Relaters and Socializers, who focus on people.

The first five chapters introduce the four personality types and teach readers how to recognize their characteristics in themselves and others. The remaining chapters explore personality's influence on how we "communicate and delegate tasks to, complement and correct, and motivate and counsel" our workplace colleagues. The authors clearly define each style and illustrate interactions between people with different styles. Examples are drawn from management, sales, customer service, team building and other common business interactions. The authors emphasize that their framework is heuristic, that few people operate "purely" from a single style in all situations.

I encountered this book in a Federal government leadership training class. The instructor made effective use of the authors' model in class exercises, convincing me that the book had something to offer. After reading it, I remain convinced. Readers who study personality in-depth may gain more from research based on the general Five-Factor model of personality (see, for example, Personality and Work: Reconsidering the Role of Personality in Organizations). But first-time supervisors and team leaders can take many practical lessons away from this book. And they will be well prepared for further honing of their leadership skills from an advanced guide, such as Management of Organizational Behavior (9th Edition) by Hersey, Blanchard and Johnson.
