Hilarious Weekend Read
By FreefFreefieFreefinatorFreeforAllFreeferoni
Hilarious! Gilman is absolutely hilarious. If you're oft-bored with "How to be..." books for women, admittedly have a little sass in you, don't like your humor veiled, and need some weekend reading, you'll likely enjoy this gem.
Her crazy analogies and metaphors absolutely hit the nail on the head. While she grazes the same themes as other known-feminist writers, her witty spin makes those same themes not seem so musty, thus appealing to a younger generation and reaffirming in new ways for older generations. The one that caught me thinking was the author's assessment of men and women at an athletic club; Gilman gives new life to the thought of how men and women view and are viewed differently in terms of their bodies. Pointing out that men lift FREEweights while women climb the stairMASTER made me howl and even got a chuckle from my boyfriend.
While careful not to stereotype, Gilman has us all pegged and gives us all a wake-up call. There truly is a lesson to be learned in this book for every woman - even those of us who thought we were goddesses before buying our copy.
Gilman's humor doesn't overshadow the serious context of this book, but it does allow us all to laugh at ourselves a little when we recognize ourselves in her writing. A highly recommended read for any woman bought a copy of "The Rules..." just to burn it and who doesn't mind laughing a little at themselves.
...and the woman's Grandmother was a JEWEL! :-)

Susan Jane Gilman is my hero
By Cléa Major
I know, I know, this book is supposedly for 'older' women. But I am only fourteen, and I loved it. I think this is exactly the kind of stuff young girls need to read. It's hilarious, it is smart, it is serious and it is silly. It's alarming and yet comforting. It makes me want to go out and change the world. She's obviously educated, and unafraid to shock people. I was surprised and delighted with the way she unabashedly bombs republicans and conservatives-I am a stalwart liberal, and many authors today are afraid to say too much bashing the opposite party. Another pleasant surprise was her frank language-too many authors-particularly those writing for teens-don't swear at all in their books. Now, this may be a personal preference for some authors, but it is just plain unrealistic to write a contemporary book and not swear or use profanity at all. Not to mention that it weakens the book if you're saying 'heck', and 'shoot', and 'darn it' all the time. Ms. Gilman is not afraid to say any bad language, and that, in my opinion, makes her writing much stronger and sassier.
The only problem I had with her logic was the disses on 'old-fashioned' feminism. I am a feminist, and that doesn't mean I'm whiny, or unfeminine, or man-hating, or too 'nice', or any of the labels that the media has put on feminism. I think Susan Jane Gilman was too hard on 'old fashioned' feminism, but that's about it. Everything else she said I agree with completely. Personally, I think this should be required reading for high school girls!

Take No Prisoners Princess
By Suzanne
The first thing that caught my attention was the pair of bright pink floating lips grazing the cover speaking "Kiss My Tiara." I've always embraced and flaunted my Princess side, so naturally this book was speaking to me. I picked it up, stared leafing through it, and read the introduction.
My first concern was that it looked like a witty and entertaining book, but that it would be about capturing a man, leaving out her lesbian and bisexual sisters. I was pleasantly surprised to find in the introduction that she had interviewed women from all walks of life, and when I bought it and later read it, I wasn't disappointed. Gilman is very inclusive and this book applies to all sexual orientations as well as crossing ethnic and religious lines.
There has been criticism lobbed at this book for promoting a liberal agenda. Yes, Gilman is very progressive, but she makes no bones about it from the beginning. If you're very conservative or very politically correct, I cannot recommend this book to you. Gilman doesn't tiptoe trying to appease all people. She winds up the intro by saying about the fresh-mouthed women she interviewed, "if that makes this book in any way homogenous and elitist, so be it. As my grandma used to say, 'F*** 'em if they can't take a joke!'"
Nuggets of wisdom from Gilman's grandmother pop up frequently throughout the book, and the humor is highly New York Jewish. Gilman touches on topics of beauty (expanding narrow, unrealistic definitions), sex, family, politics, gay rights, money and careers, religion, and whether it's kosher to wear blue nail polish when hitting up a big wig for a pile of shekels.
"Kiss My Tiara" is a fast-paced and humorous read that kept me laughing out loud even as Gilman hit on more serious topics in the spirit of Sholom Aleichem. The famed New York Yiddish writer once said of the Jewish humor, "This is an ugly and mean world, and only to spite it we mustn't weep. If you want to know, this is the consta!nt source of my good spirit, of my humor. Not to cry, out of spite, only to laugh out of spite, only to laugh." Gilman's SmartMouth Goddess Bubbe (grandmother) would be proud.

Amazon.com Review
Billionaire Palmer Lloyd is accustomed to getting what he wants--and what he wants for his new museum is the largest meteorite on earth. Unfortunately for Lloyd, it's buried on an inhospitable Chilean island just north of the Ice Limit in the most brutal, unforgiving seas in the world.

Fortunately for Lloyd, he knows people--people like Eli Glinn, the hyper-focused president of Effective Engineering Solutions, Inc.; Glinn's nonconformist, genius of a mathematician, Rachel Amira; and the uncannily able construction engineer, Manuel Garza. Lloyd's also tapped the brilliant but disgraced meteorite hunter, Sam McFarlane, and the exceptional supertanker captain, Sally Britton, whose career was unshipped by intemperance and a reef. Of course, such a team has a hefty price tag: Lloyd's broad features narrowed. "And that is... "

"One hundred and fifty million dollars. Including chartering the transport vessel. FOB the Lloyd Museum."

Lloyd's face went pale. "My God. One hundred and fifty million... " His chin sank onto his hands. "For a ten-thousand-ton rock. That's... "

"Seven dollars and fifty cents a pound," said Glinn. EES's plan is to obtain mining rights to the island, secure the allegiance of various Chilean functionaries via blinding sums of money, disguise a state-of- the-art supertanker as a decrepit ore rig, mine the rock, slip it into the ship, and zip back to New York to thunderous notoriety. Unforeseen, however, are a rogue Chilean naval captain, seas to make Sebastian Junger boot, and a blood-red meteorite of undetermined pedigree and a habit of discharging billions of volts of electricity for no apparent reason.

Like Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child's earlier collaborations (Relic, Thunderhead, and others), The Ice Limit tools along swiftly, blending nicely drawn characters (excepting, regrettably, the book's true protagonist, the meteorite), a reasonably exciting narrative, and enough graspable science and plausible-seeming theories to bring readers happily up to speed and keep them climax-bound. Not the authors' best effort, certainly, but a fine diversion nonetheless. --Michael Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
The summer-beach reader has few better friends than Preston and Child, who, beginning with Relic (1995), have produced one (generally) smart and suspenseful thriller after another, most recently Thunderhead. Their new novelDwhich, like its predecessors, skirts the edge of science fictionDis their most expertly executed (though not most imaginative) entertainment yet. Its concept is high and simple: a scientific expedition plans to dig out and transport to New York harbor the mother of all meteorites from its resting spot on an icy island offshore Chile. The mission is nearly impossible: not only will the meteorite be the heaviest object ever moved by humanity, but the Chileans, if they learn of the mission, may decimate it in order to keep the meteorite. Six strong if broadly drawn characters propel the premise into action. There's bullheaded billionaire Palmer Lloyd, who funds the expedition, and three (of the many) people he hires to get the rock: world-class meteorite-hunter Sam McFarlane, disgraced for his obsession about possible interstellar meteorites; Captain Britton, disgraced alcoholic skipper hired to ferry the meteorite to the U.S.; and Eli Glinn, cold-blooded mastermind of an engineering firm dedicated to getting incredible jobs doneDthis one at the price of $300 million. There's Commandante Vallenar, a Chilean naval officer exiled to his nation's southern wastes, who will stop at nothing to defend Chile's honor and property. Finally, there's the meteoriteDblood red, impossibly dense, possessed of strange and dangerous properties. Like the premise, the plot is simple, traversing a near-linear narrative that sustains serious tension as the expedition travels to Chile, digs out the meteorite and heads homewardDonly to face both Vallenar and a ferocious storm. What the novel lacks in sophistication, it makes up for in athleticism: this is a big-boned thriller, one that will make a terrific summer movie as well as a memorable hot-day read. (July)

From School Library Journal
YA-Hired to locate a meteorite and transfer it to a billionaire collector's new museum, Sam McFarlane uses high technology and groups of experts to find, dig up, and begin shipping the gigantic rock. However, Commandante Vallenar of the Chilean Navy doesn't want it removed from his country. Action on the tanker reaches an intense strain as the crew and members of the recovery team struggle with both the meteorite and a killer storm, a panteonero, which threatens to overwhelm the ship. Gunfire from Vallenar's ship initiates a life-and-death chase as both vessels sail into the frigid waters off Tierra del Fuego. The meteorite, full of unknown properties and prone to sudden bursts of electrical charges, offers the biggest surprise of all, as the ocean stands ready to claim everyone and everything. This is a tempestuous adventure of high seas, high stakes, and high excitement. As characters enter the story, their personalities expand along with the intricate plot, taking on more intensity and power. The extreme hostility of the environment eventually proves to be the deciding factor. Like Sebastian Junger's The Perfect Storm (Norton, 1997), this natural thriller is not to be missed.

Great adventure!
By Jarratt Bryan
I read this book years ago and, other than recalling I liked it, remembered little to nothing about it. Except the last few words. And they were a stunner.

I decided to read it again because Preston and Child recently published the a sequel: Beyond the Ice Limit.

The story tells of a very wealthy man who wishes to create a museum like none other. He hears of a strange discovery off the coast of Chile and learns it's the largest meteorite even found. He enlists the help of Eli Glenn and his company, Effective Engineering Solutions (EES), to unearth the meteorite, get it onto a converted oil tanker, and bring it back to New York where the new museum is located. What follows is an amazing story of triumph, failure, and adventure. I've waited a LONG time to see what happens. In a few moments, I'll begin finding out...

Well defined, but flawed characters in a battle to survive.
By H. A. Friedman
I ordered the Ice Limit because I enjoy the Agent Pendergast books written by Preston and Childs. I thought it was possible that this might be a stinker without my favorite FBI agent, but generally speaking, good authors are very good.

I did enjoy the book. I liked the fact that the story is well written with excellent use of words and grammar. The reader is wonderful and the voices of the different characters were very distinct. The story also goes in a straight line. These days most authors think we need a half-dozen plots, killers, spies, all-powerful secret organizations, etc. That just makes the story hard to read and the characters get lost in all the confusion. This story is straightforward. A rich collector wants an ancient giant rock that fell in Chile; How to get it?

The first half of the book is just about getting to Chile. We have lots of hints of what is to come. We are told that an early finder was killed mysteriously. Does this rock defend itself? Is it a flying saucer as in “The thing,” or a space ship with consciousness like “Five Million Years to Earth?” The Museum of Natural History in New York City is mentioned a few times which made me think of an earlier adventure in “The Relic.” The crew of the ship sent to rescue the rock is made up of good, but flawed individuals. There is a ship’s captain who grounded her last ship on a reef, a meteor hunter who to his regret was involved in smuggling in the past, and a mission planner who lost his unit in Vietnam. All want to do right but have failed at some point.

The ship is a brand new tanker, specially built, made to look like an old wreck so as not to draw attention. Early in the narrative we are told about the dangers of the area around Antarctica and we immediately start to see what must be the plot. The ship will get the rock, the rock must effect the ship is some way so it is powerless in Antarctica. Why else tell use all about the danger? Will that happen or have we been fed a red herring? Only time will tell.

So, the first half of the book we have been introduced to most of the major characters, and we have finally arrived in Chilean waters where the local military and police might have to be bribed to stay away. About the middle of the book we finally get to see the object and they threw me a curve-ball. I was wrong (maybe). Looking back, there was a hint of what it might be but I paid no attention to it. It was almost a throw-away. OK, I need to pay more attention to details.

As the book concludes there is a sea battle with a mad Chilean naval officer, a terrible storm that can rip a ship apart, and sudden activity from the rock. There is no happy ending. It is disaster after disaster. What is the rock? Is it dead or alive? Is it a threat to all life on Earth? If so, how to kill it? No easy answers here!

One of their best!
By Darleen Michael Baker
This, to me, is probably one of the best stories yet by this duo. I loved their first book, The Relic, and couldn't put it down. since then, IMO, they have swung from almost hit to full-on miss. With "The Ice Limit" they have a winner. I could not stop reading. Not because it was so enthralling but because I wanted to know WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? They have done a masterful job of leading the reader, along with the characters, on treasure hunt.

Yes, some of the characters are one-dimensional (the Comandante of the Chilean destroyer comes instantly to mind) and almost cartoonish in their stereotypical actions but every good action story needs a villain so I was willing to let it ride. It's difficult to come up with a bad guy that far South on the planet!

I had anticipated part of the ending but not the final de nu monde. I had an inkling but was only close, not on target. So now I'm reading the first Gideon Crew novel as "the Ice Limit" appears to be #3 in the series.

If you like James Rollins, then this one should please you as well.

Once upon a time Americans had family doctors: white-coated figures who knew all about each patient's history. Today we have PCPs, HMOs, and a good deal of anxiety. Now M.D.-turned-patient-advocate Marie Savard shows you why you must be at the center of your own health care -- and arms you with eight revolutionary yet commonsense steps that tell you:
-- Why you must collect copies of all your medical records -- and how it can be done
-- Why you must acquire a working knowledge of any conditions you have -- and which Web sites are most helpful
-- Which tests, exams, and immunizations you should routinely receive -- and how to read and understand test results
-- How to be an active partner with your doctor -- with a health journal, a "health buddy", and more
-- How to work with the system -- in the hospital and with insurance companies. This book offers the tips that just might save your life -- or that of someone you love.

Myths in Medicine
By Jamie Hudson
Before reading this well written and very informative book I never gave it a thought to collect my test results and doctors summaries. Doing so really makes sense and should have been done years ago. I keep thinking of all the files I keep on my pet, automobile, checking and savings account, etc. Yet I never even thought to keep a file on my health and health information. My family has a history of heart disease, yet I have never written this information down which could save my life one day. I've also relied on my doctor to tell me what to do. This book made me realize I need to take care of myself and have my doctor help me in that process. I also purchased the tool that Dr. Savard developed, The Savard Health Record. It's a 3 ring binder that will become my health record. This binder/system has a user's manual that explains how important it is take control of your health. It shows and explains tests like cholesterol, blood count so that I know what the normal is, what the abnormal is. I've read so much about medical mistakes. By getting my test results and learning how to read them I can help avoid any mistakes. I know now if my doctor says my cholestrol is fine because the range of normal is quite wide I need to question that because of my family history of heart disease. I highly recommend this book to everyone...it could save your life.

Amazon.com Review
2nd Chance reconvenes the Women's Murder Club, four friends (a detective, a reporter, an assistant district attorney, and a medical examiner) who used their networking skills, feminine intuition, and professional wiles to solve a baffling series of murders in 1st to Die. This time, the murders of two African Americans, a little girl and an old woman, bear all the signs of a serial killer for Lindsay Boxer, newly promoted to lieutenant of San Francisco's homicide squad. But there's an odd detail she finds even more disturbing: both victims were related to city cops. A symbol glimpsed at both murder scenes leads to a racist hate group, but the taunting killer strikes again and again, leaving deliberate clues and eluding the police ever more cleverly. In the meantime, each of the women has a personal stake at risk--and the killer knows who they are.

2nd Chance speeds along at a Formula One pace through many tight curves, but unlike recent entries in the Alex Cross series, it doesn't sacrifice good characters to a twisted plot. Lindsay's the star, but there's a fine esprit de corps among the four women, who are even better developed here than in the first book. What makes them both convincing and interesting as a criminal-justice juggernaut is their willingness to stick their necks out, even if they suffer for it. If you haven't picked up a James Patterson novel in a while, this is a great time to start anew. --Barrie Trinkle

From Publishers Weekly
It's been a long time since we've seen a bestselling author of Patterson's clout credit an assistant author on the cover, and good for Patterson for that. The credit is deserved. This is Patterson's richest, most engaging novel since When the Wind Blows and, as the second in his Women's Murder Club series (after 1st to Die), yet more evidence that this prolific writer can roam beyond Alex Cross with style and success. Like all Pattersons, the narration mixes first and third person the first here is voiced, as before, by San Francisco homicide detective Lindsay Boxer, while the third-person sections cover the doings of the other three members of Boxer's informal club, a reporter, a pathologist and a prosecutor, as well as the villain's shenanigans. The basic story line is vintage Patterson, i.e., a serial killer (here, one known as Chimera) goes on a calculated rampage until stopped by the good guys or in this case, gals. As the victims a young girl shot dead, an elderly black woman hanged, two cops pile up, it becomes clear to Boxer and others that they're up against a racist who hates black cops; is the killer a cop himself? The story ripples with twists and some remarkably strong scenes, particularly Boxer's in-prison interview with a crazed con. But what makes this Patterson stand out above all is the textured storytelling arising from its focus on Boxer's personal issues. In the first novel, Patterson personalized Boxer by dealing with her rare blood disease; here, it's the emotionally powerful introduction of Boxer's long-lost father into her life that galvanizes the plot, particularly as Patterson ties the man into Chimera's rampage. Prime Patterson; first-rate entertainment. (On sale Mar. 4)Forecast: Patterson's name, major ad/promo and a 10-city author tour add up to #1; simultaneous Time Warner Audio and large-print edition.

Great read.

Patterson did it again. These four ladies and their personalities burrow into your heart. They each bring something special to the mix. And then there's the case, it's twisting and turning before they figure it out. This is only #2 but both books have brought action, romance, intrigue and a rush of warmth as I read them.
Can't wait for #3.

disappointing sequel in this promising series
By audrey frances
This second book in the Women's Murder Club series was okay -- entertaining enough and a quick read -- but I had really enjoyed the first in the series, 1st to Die, and was looking forward to this sequel. I was disappointed, though, finding this installment less thrilling and less engaging. The murders and solution were less interesting; whereas 1st to Die had lots of twists and revelations, this has one twist that's not really very surprising, and there is no mystery to speak of -- a straightforward motive that precludes any tension building as the case proceeds. Also, perhaps because the author assumes you've read the first book, he doesn't bother to devote much space to character development, which is unfortunate since it is the friendship and abilities of detective Lindsay Boxer and her friends, the D.A., the reporter and the coroner, that make the series interesting. The appearance of Lindsay's absentee father is a nice touch, though, and adds to our understanding of her character.
Less forgivable is that characters make silly mistakes. For example, Lindsay decides to follow a dangerous suspect into an unknown, dark location knowing that her cell phone battery is dead and that no one knows where she is. Ouch. How is that consistent with the main character being intelligent? Another, less critical but still annoying, mistake -- characters refer to "Zena the Warrior Woman". Do they mean "Xena, Warrior Princess" perhaps? Did anybody proof this? Print is large, chapters are short, and there's lots of white space -- it's nominally 400 pages, but is probably only about 250. All-in-all, this is a moderately enjoyable pseudo-thriller that may leave you feeling a bit short-changed. Just my opinion, but I recommend buying it used or checking it out from the library.

From Publishers Weekly
Based on the Atlanta child murders of 1979-1980, this wrenching debut novel is told from the perspective of three Atlanta fifth-graders living in the midst of the crisis. Tasha is a sweet, conflicted middle-class girl navigating the harsh social waters of her school. Rodney, "the weirdest boy in class," is an unpopular kid who feels both pushed and ignored by his perfectionist parents. Octavia is a whip-smart, confident social outcast who carefully notes that she lives "across the street" from the projects. Jones, who was a child herself in Atlanta in the late '70s and early '80s, weaves her tale with consummate ease, shifting from third to second to first person as she switches narrators. The details of the children's everyday life playground fights, school cafeteria breakfasts, candy store visits are convincingly presented and provide an emotional context for the murders. When classmates begin disappearing, we know that they, along with their peers, are not one-dimensional innocents. One night when Octavia sneaks a late-night look at the local news, she sees a now-missing classmate flash on the screen. "In the picture he looked like a regular boy from our class. He was by himself so you couldn't tell that he was shorter than most of them and just nicer and smarter than all of them put together. Kodak commercials say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but the one they showed of Rodney ain't worth more than three or four. Boy. Black. Dead." This strongly grounded tale hums with the rhythms of schoolyard life and proves Jones to be a powerful storyteller.

From Library Journal
Narrated in succession by three extremely perceptive (though at times almost too precocious) fifth graders, this first novel engagingly conveys the paranoia and fear that dominated the African American community in Atlanta during the 1979 child murders, a time when almost two dozen black children were abducted and murdered, their corpses abandoned in the countryside. While the ending of the final section seems too pat (and this reviewer also wishes that the book had a better title), Jones is still able to capture what it feels like to be ten-that fascinating interstitial moment when one can be simultaneously torn between being savvy enough to know that all is not right with the world and devastated at not being invited to a popular classmate's sleepover. Jones is particularly good at portraying the day-to-day lives of these children-their often difficult home lives and their mundane but fascinating school experiences-although, as in many novels narrated by children, the adults don't come off very well. In style, tone, and approach, Jones's novel is reminiscent of another excellent realistic novel of African American social life, Thuliani Davis's 1959. For most public libraries, especially those with large African American collections.
Roger A. Berger, Everett Community Coll., WA

From Booklist
Jones was a child in Atlanta during the summer of 1979 when 23 black children were abducted and murdered. In her novel, she evokes early adolescence and grade-school angst, against the backdrop of the constant fear of abduction. She focuses on children in a single class, building the tension at school and at home, as they suffer through the disappearance of two of their classmates. Tasha's father abandons plans to leave her mother for another woman and returns home to protect his children when the disappearances begin. Rodney, a lonely and dispirited boy who can't find a place for himself at school or at home, deliberately puts himself in the path of danger following a humiliation at school. Octavia's mother, fearful for her child, eventually sends her to live with her father in South Carolina against the girl's strong objections. Jones is as skillful at evoking the fear and anxiety of that horrendous summer as she is at recalling coming-of-age concerns about social cliques, self-identity, and family problems. REVWR

By LOCKSIE
Tayari Jones tells the story through the eyes and ears of three children. Tasha, Rodney and Octavia are the fithgraders coming of age during the time of the Atlanta child murders. Each tell of the trials and tribulations at home, school and during their personal time. There is sadness, fear and tears especially when children they know start disapearing! It was fun to read what the children thought about their parents and teachers, it took me back to my own childhood. Octavia is my favorite out of the three. She seemed wise beyond her years. Tayari Jones did a great job but I felt the story could have gone on for a while longer. I got emotionally attached to the kids and wanted to know how their lives turn out. Over all this book was very good.

Leaving me wanting more
By A Customer
First let me say, I really enjoyed reading this book BUT it left me wanting to know what happened to the children/narrators. The book doesn't advance in time - it's just a snap shot of a brief period of time when the child murders are taking place. When the book ended, I was left wondering what happened to them, how did the murders affect them and their families, were they changed in any way. Without that something extra, I put the book down feeling a little cheated.

They usually don't last, but it looks as if Effie Garrard has come to stay. When Constable Hamish Macbeth calls on her, he's amazed that she weathered the difficult winter. But Effie is quite delusional, imagining that she's engaged to local artist Jock Fleming. Later, Effie is found in the mountains, poisoned by hemlock.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Beaton's flawless 21st installment in her popular Hamish Macbeth series (after 2005's Death of a Bore) boasts amusing local color and singularly savvy sleuthing. Macbeth, constable in the Highlands village of Lochdubh, thinks the apparent suicide of Effie Garrard, an artist who's arrived in town only recently, is suspicious. Following the murder of a nosy American tourist, Macbeth digs a little deeper and learns that Effie couldn't paint to, er, save her life—she was passing off another artist's work as her own. Macbeth's personal life is also consuming: two old flames turn up in Lochdubh within a few days of each other. Of course, Macbeth solves what turns out to be a double murder—but resolution of his romantic contretemps will have to wait for the next novel in this charming series. Beaton, who's also the author of the Agatha Raisin mystery series, will be the British guest of honor at the 2006 Bouchercon. (Feb.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* A wine bottle loaded with antifreeze. A Scottish dance party interrupted by obsessive jealousy. A Brigadoon-like setting in northern Scotland that quickly turns Hitchcockian. Beaton is a masterful mixer of disparate elements that result in crime novels that are part police procedural and part psychological thriller. In this, the twenty-first in the Hamish Macbeth series, Beaton positions the stolid Constable Macbeth, sole lawman in the tiny village of Lochdubh in the Highlands, at the end of a winter marked by a series of spectacular blizzards. Macbeth is certain that the newcomer to the village, Effie Garrard, an artist under the influence of the usual romantic baggage about life in the Highlands, will have long abandoned her isolated cottage. But Effie seems to be in fine fettle, even talking about another newcomer artist falling in love with her. Then spring arrives, and Effie is found dead on a hillside. Macbeth's higher-ups rule the death a suicide, but he is bothered by the scene of the crime and the psychology behind the woman's death. A clear-cut case of murder follows, with Macbeth trying to discover a connection between the two. While the plotting itself is intricate and absorbing, Beaton, a Scot herself, excels at giving readers a taste of Highland life and creating a believable character in the lonely, brilliant, continually frustrated-in-love Macbeth. A treat. Connie Fletcher

"Longing for escape? Time for a trip to Lochdubh, the scenic, if somnolent, village in the Scottish Highlands where M.C. Beaton sets her beguiling whodunits."

ANOTHER FUN AND GRATIFYING READ.
By D. Blankenship
Death of a Dreamer by M.C. Beaton, is another nice little visit to Lochdubh, Scotland and another wonderful little peek into the life of Hamish Macbeth, our red-head constable and the caste of quirky characters that surround him. Beaton stays true to form with this offering, and like other books in this series, she has given us a nice and relaxing read.

We not only have one murder in this little mystery, but two. Like her previous works, no blood and gore here, just good old clean murder. There are of course a very large number of people who could very well have committed these crimes, and it is for our intrepid investigator to unravel the simple, but interesting complexities of the case....of course with plenty of help from his friends!

Again, poor Hamish does have his problems with women and remains just a clueless about the other sex as he has in past novels. This time it is different. Not one, not two, but three of his old love interests show up at his door, and all at the same time. Per usual, Hamish's ineptitude runs them off and our befuddled detective is left with his dog Lugs and the wild cat, Sonsie.

With this series, I have to admit that I love the supporting caste as much as I love Hamish. There is the usual group with a few new ones thrown in for good measure. Now the figuring out of the actual "who done it" in these books is not all that great a challenge, but they are fun, restful and I get a kick out of them. I like the author's style, the minimal, to sparse use of words and I always know the bad guy or girl is going to get caught. There were some minor surprises in this one, which was nice, but they were not surprises that led you down dead end trails.

This is certainly not the best book in this series, but it is certainly good enough for Hamish fans and I do feel that most will enjoy the read as much as I did. This is one of those books that you just want to set down for a couple of sessions, and simply enjoy. I still say that Beaton can tell us more in one sentence than most authors can with several pages. Again, I recommend this one highly.

Not one of the best
By L O'connor
Two artists come to live in Lochdubh, first Effie Garrard arrives, then genial Jock Fleming. Effie develops an embarrassing crush on Jock, who does not return her feelings. then Effie is found dead, apparently by suicide, but Hamish suspects foul play. As well as solving the murder, Hamish has to cope with his complex love life, various women from his past pop up again, and there are a few new ones as well.

I found the story mildly entertaining, but a bit tired. The one about the attractive man who creates havoc among the women has been done before, and better (Death of a Charming Man), and I found all the desperate lovesick women getting on my nerves a bit.

Worth reading if you are a Macbeth fan, but definitely not one of the strongest stories in the series.

just the thing to curl up and unwind with
By tregatt
Once again death and murder finds its way to Lochdubh. And while series protagonist, Hamish MacBeth, may bemoan the encroachments of both crime and newcomers to his idyllic village, I can only rejoice that there finally is another enjoyable Hamish MacBeth mystery to curl up with and unwind.

To the villagers of Lochdubh, newcomer Effie Garrard comes across as being romantic dreamer. After all, why else would a talented artist decide to move up to the remote Highlands lock, stock and barrel? But it is only when another artist, bluff and energetic Jock Flemming moves into the village that everyone begins to suspect that there may be something not quite right with Effie. First she starts stalking Jock Flemming, then she let's slip that they're engaged, and then finally that she's pregnant with his child! Jock, of course angrily denies all of Effie's claims, and when after a confrontation with Jock, Effie is found dead on a mountain cleft, the common wisdom is that she committed suicide. But even though the police have closed the case, Hamish's instincts tell him that there is more to Effie's death than meets the eye, and that she was actually murdered. And so he starts investigating, and discovering that a great many people seem to have a lot to hide. Unfortunately, the investigation also seems to be going no where. And then there is another murder; and one, Hamish is convinced that is connected to Effie. The puzzling thing for Hamish though, is how the murderer is able to pull of these killings without being spotted. Hamish seems to be up against a very skillful and determined killer with nerves of steel, but one, nonetheless he's determined to apprehend at all cost...

Even though the storyline was a rather uncomplicated one, with few complex twists and turns, "Death of a Dreamer" did prove to be a very absorbing read, and one that did keep me guessing for a bit. So that even though Hamish relied heavily on his famous intuition (with some clues) to solve the case, this didn't detract at all because the charm of "Death of a Dreamer" (and indeed the series) lies in the interactions between all the characters in the novel, Hamish's propensity to make a mess of his romantic life, and the lightly ironic yet crisp tone of the author's prose style. All together, these made "Death of a Dreamer" a wonderfully absorbing and enjoyable read, and just the right change of pace for someone (me) who has been starting but not finishing some rather badly written and very gory mysteries! All in all a very pleasurable 4 star read.
