A Really, Really Bad Book About a Really, Really Bad Movie Critic

Having never read Harry Knowles web site, I wanted to know what the big deal was about the guy--and I found out through this book that it's a simple case of a movie geek in love with himself and his writings.

Everything about this book is rather sad. His upbringing. His weight struggles. His family life. His creating his Internet image. Though it may have made an interesting magazine article, page-after-page of his know-it-all, self-congratulatory attitude is just too much when bottom line the guy comes across as a loser.

He proclaims himself the second "celebrity produced exclusively by and for the Internet." Yet nothing here would endear the reader to this guy. And worst--the book is boring because his stories are not told in an interesting way. I love books about movies and Hollywood, but this isn't about those things--this is all about him and that's not very interesting.

What I found most surprising is that a guy who claims to write thousands of words daily would turn to two co-authors to put together an autobiography! Knowles obviously has no training in the profession, but the fact that a self-proclaimed writing celebrity can't even write his own book alone should warn readers that he's just a bunch of hot air.

In Harry's mind it's all about him.

I like reading film reviews. It doesn't matter who writes them, I find other peoples' opinions fascinating. However, reading a review by Harry Knowles is a painful experience. He has an annoying habit of making every review about himself; either by babbling on about other films to flaunt his (un)impressive film knowledge or by attempting to show just how "inside" he is. Also, Harry Knowles is not the best writer. He tends to misuse words and has a rather shaky understanding of English grammar. Like his reviews, this book is also a painful experience. I kept wanting to stop, yet something compelled me onward. Harry seems to believe he operates outside the Hollywood system because he chooses to. It never occurs to him that he operates outside the Hollywood system because he has nothing to offer. Yes, he has seen a lot of movies - that is the kind of luxury having no life affords you - but it is a tremendous sum that equals nothing. He possesses the kind of arrogance that will astound and amaze you. A number of passages shocked me so much that I thought he had to be kidding. Granted, he has led an interesting life (how much of it is true is questionable), but he simply has nothing to justify his massive ego. His website has earned him a number of devoted followers, which in turn earns him the attention of so studios whenever they need a film promoted. This book struck me as nothing more than shameful self-promotion.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY

As an avowed movie geek myself, I thought I owed it to myself to check out the poster boy for geekdom. I WAS WRONG. I was casually aware of Knwoles borderline-... writing style, and found it charming at times. But this book is painfully ghost written, it feels more like something that would be in one of Knowles' precious cracker jacks boxes than a real book. I kept wanting to skip forward because it was so boring, but figured the good parts were right around the bend. I lost hope 3/4 of the way through, and finishing the last pages was truly an ordeal. Get ANY book besides this, or better yet, go get some movies to support your own geekdo instead of supporting this guys bloated ... and ego. I WISH I COULD GIVE IT ZERO STARS

Clarke's The City and the Stars

One of his earliest novel's, Arthur C. Clarke's The City and the Stars is an awe-inspiring tale about the human desire to explore. As one would expect of something written in the 1950's, much of the story's astrophysics is dated. We are currently in a golden age of astronomy, with major discoveries published almost every month.

But the computer science is breathtakingly accurate in its anticipation of so-called distributed computing.

Like most of Clarke's work, this novel is optimistic, something typical of the science-fiction of actual scientists. Clarke studied physics and mathematics at King's College, London, and wrote the seminal paper on communications satellite systems. (For one short story, he did sixteen pages of orbital calculations!) It is not surprising that trained scientists would write optimistic science-fiction. They believe in science, or they would not have studied it.

The City and the Stars is inspirational, filled with scientific verisimilitude and human authenticity. And in its imagery as well as in its language, it is poetry.

A fine pair of Science Fiction Classics from the 1950's

THE CITY AND THE STARS, partially based on his earlier work AGAINST THE FALL OF NIGHT, has been continuously in print since it was first published in 1956. It is Arthur C. Clarke's most enduring tale and is "one of the strongest tales of conceptual breakthrough in genre SF." (Peter Nichols, Encyclopedia of Science Fiction) It is a mesmerizing story of technology, nature, space travel, discovery, 'the future' and the true nature of cosmic perspective. Engaging and articulate, it brings a mystical intensity which has made it a classic, and made Sir Arthur C. Clarke a true grand master of science fiction.

THE SANDS OF MARS, one of Clarke's earliest novels is a bit stiff in its prose, but is still as entertaining today as it was when it was first published in 1952. It is an optimistic tale of survival on Mars--in the very classic mode of human problems being resolved against a backdrop of scientific discovery.

A special thanks should go to Warner Aspect SF division for putting such great works in a contemporary format--and bringing back some of the finest science fiction classics. Some of the other titles they have published in this new format include THE FOUNTAINS OF PARADISE, THE GHOST FROM THE GRAND BANKS and THE DEEP RANGE.

Hard SciFi at its original best!

This newly released omnibus contains two full-length novels that have become so ubiquitous as to be part of our psyche.
The City and The Stars made such an impression on me that I can remember exactly where I was when I read it for the very first time - seventh grade in Bright, California at one of the meanest junior highs I ever did attend. It was an escape, it was fantastical without being fantasy. It was hard science fiction, set in the future. At that age, I couldn't comprehend how far in the future but I knew it was a place I would have liked to see, doing things that Alvin did. Living that Grand Adventure with him!
I would encourage anyone who hasn't read an early Arthur C. Clarke or knows of any young science fiction fans to buy this omnibus & introduce them to the universe of Arthur C. Clarke. He did write more than 2001: A Space Odyssey - you know!

smart, inspiring, clear and practical -- excellent resource!

i found this book to be just what i needed, both for myself (insomnia, back pain) and the people i work with in my practice (psychotherapy). it gave me enough information and examples to inspire confidence, both in the tool of guided imagery and in myself as its practitioner. i use the scripts. at first i wouldn't veer from them, but now i do, because i got very comfortable from having the printed guidelines to take off from. i also think it's very well written and intelligent, but with some humor and humanity. i keep referring back to it. i expect i'll be using it for a long time.
i would say this book is good for people who want to use guided imagery for themselves or apply it to others. one of my friends used it to help her child get over night fears.
it's definitely worth every penny.

Basic introduction, goes fast

I am reviewing the audio book version. I see the book as most valuable to a late teen or young adult who grew up in the nerd crowd, addicted to Warcraft, or maybe experiencing Asperger's Syndrome. For such a person, this book is one of a few good choices on amazon.

This gives a basic introduction to polite small talk. Exercises left to the listener such as preparing a list of conversation starters may not be called out as distinctly as they should be.

It hits a well-rounded list of topics very quickly. As such, it can also be re-listened to as a refresher. It is also distinguished from "The Fine Art of Small Talk" which focuses in greater depth on fewer but still important topics, and "How to Talk to Anyone... 92 Little Tricks for Big Success" which sequentially lists individual tricks for someone who already has a basic understanding of small talk covered herein.

Perhaps the comment missing from the book as to be aware that most people violate a particular number of the pointers regularly as part of their personality's disposition.

Some other reviewers have given this book lower scores simply because it is not an advanced guide to working people or persuasion. For intermediate to advanced topics of negotiation, argumentation, persuasion, or seduction, this is not the right book, nor does it ever claim to be.

disappointed

I'm not a great conservationist although as a scientist giving talks at public forums and meeting with people professionally and socially I have to be reasonably effective. This is one of three books I purchased to brush up on my conversational skills. I must say this book is a sore disappointment and complete waste of time (never mind money). The book is full of tautologies such as liking people is a great plus, be comfortable in one's own skin, etc. The so-called "advice" in the book reduces the difficulties associated with making good conservation to equally (or more) difficult traits that, if you could easily solve, would transform you into a new person. One gets a strong sense that RoAne and her pals (she lists so many folks in the book, many of whom she interacted with at events where RoAne was a keynote speaker) are the modern equivalent of snake oil merchants, peddling books by padding them with misleading reviews. I have two more books to go, but my recommendation is never to buy a book written by this person again. Unless you can peruse it at an airport bookstore which is what I would typically do for self-help type books. Regrettably not in this instance.

Not a keeper

I bought the audio-tape read by the author. I hope she is a better speaker than a books-on-tape reader. I found her delivery nasal and flat. It was unpleasant listening to her.
The content was thin, included too many quotes, and came off at times as self-congratulatory. If I didn't think conversation skills were important I wouldn't have bought the tape. I didn't need to hear over and over how important being a "conversensation" (her much over-used term) is to social and business success.
I listened to this tape twice (the second time to verify my impressions) and then got rid of it. It was a waste of money.
I found a much better tape on the subject in "The Fine Art of Small Talk" by Debra Fine.

About the Author
Earnhardt is the son of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt and the newest star of the racing family dynasty. He is a two-time champion of the NASCAR Busch Series and was the first rookie to win NASCAR's all-star race, the Winston. GREAT book

As a Dale Jr. fan I'd read anything he does but this is simply a well written piece of work. He may be a youngster in the sport but Dale Jr. can write with a maturity while still maintaining his youthfull sense of style and humor. Although those that don't follow races every week may not understand some things he talks about or find the summary of races a bit boring....NASCAR fans will enjoy getting a behind the scenes feel for what drivers and their crew go through week after week, be it the thrill of victory or the low points after a heartbreaking bad day. I especially loved Dale's honesty about the things he does off the track, like the appearances he makes, how he feels about them and the fun he has with friends at Club E. After reading this book I'd give anything to see Dale at Halloween as "Dirk Diggler".....what a hoot!!
DON'T get this book if you are looking for a "life story" about his childhood or a biography about Dale's life after losing his dad. Although he touches on it in the Epilogue, this is a book about Dale JR, not SR and as Jr says in the beginning, that book may be coming years down the road.
I'm proud to be a fan of one of NASCAR's rising stars and this book will make the upcoming 2002 season all the more enjoyable.

One word......AWESOME!!! Dale Jr. takes on a wild ride through his rookie season running with the Big Dogs in the Winston Cup. Not only does he give us an insider view of what happens on race day, he takes us behind the wall and gives us a look at a driver off the track. This is the closest I've felt to the real life of the guys I watch on Sunday. Driver #8 is a great read full of emotional highs and lows. I found myself laughing in some segments and nearly crying in others. Even if you aren't a fan of Dale Jr., I encourage you to read this book. You'll have a whole new respect for what these fellows do and a whole new respect for them as people.

A Look at a Young NASCAR Driver Through his Eyes

I was excited to read this book...it is written as if Dale Jr. was talking right to you. It is plain written and does not "juice up" anything to make the story line more exciting. The book goes through his rookie season of 2000, race by race. He speaks about race car set up, run in's with fans, the media, actions taken on the track during a race, and what is was like to race with his father. The book also gives a small glimpse into his personal life as far as an overview of his years growing up and the things that he encountered. I was so hoping for more intimate details of romance in his life...or things about women that he has dated. He mentions this particular subject with regards to the "Bud" girls and a few others but that is it. He is truly a party type guy and speaks often in the book about being drunk/hung over and "hanging out with friends." He does not give specific details about partying or going out though. If you are a race fan then this book will be enjoyable. I found myself skipping some of the minute by minute race recap though. So I was jumping around through the book...which you can easily do...especially if you remember the 2000 season. And that is exactly what the book is about (no mention of his father's death in retrospect or anything like that). There is an epilouge included at the end of the book that reflects on his father's death and the Pepsi 400 in 2001. Junior talks about that special victory and what it meant to him. I feel like I know this driver better. He is a typical 26 year old man that is good at driving stock cars and has been thrust into the limelight because of a very famous father. He likes to drink beer, play video games and hang out with friends. And that is as deep as it gets (or at least as deep as this book gets). I am a NASCAR fan but also an avid book reader...I gave this book 3 stars because there are better biographies/autobiographies than this. If I was rating this in regards to NASCAR books only, I would give it a 5.

Kriegel (If It Ain't Broke, Break It, LJ 4/15/91) and Brandt, a clinical psychologist specializing in change and transition, have written a guide to managing corporate change. They describe business's most common "sacred cows" and why they should be changed. These include "paper cows" (the more communication the better) and the "downsizing cow" (to cut costs, cut people). The authors also detail ways to build the change-ready environment and motivate people to change. A personality inventory and exercises for personnel are also included. Although other recent titles take on corporate change (e.g., Harry Woodward's Navigating Through Change, Irwin Professional Pub., 1994), none focuses on the need for change within traditional paradigms. Involved in Change Control or Project Management? Get This!

Don't let this book's title through you off. Give it a chance, because it does a great job of detailing how an organization can change and make business processes work better.
Kriegel and Brandt show ways in which remaining caught up in a given mode of thinking about one's business can often lead to missed opportunities for growth and success. It offers an interesting array of anecdotes that can assist in expanding one's thinking about the everyday processes we take for granted. An excellent resource for managers and others who feel their organization is caught in a rut and going nowhere.
This book can guide managers in the steps needed to eliminate outdated business practices and routines that drain time and money. It offers ways to redesign the rules of an organization and instill a capacity for change in their management teams and employees. A good resource that shouldn't be overlooked by anyone involved in change control or project management.

Real-life examples make this book a winner!

Robert J. Kriegel is rapidly becoming one of my favorite
business authors . . . I've previously enjoyed two of
his other books, HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS
WITHOUT WORKING SO HARD and IF IT AIN'T BROKE,
BREAK IT . . . so I figured it was time to get hold of
one of his earlier efforts, SACRED COWS MAKE THE BEST
BURGERS--written with David Brandt.
I was definitely not disappointed!
Kriegel and Brandt examine why people cling to outmoded
beliefs, practices and processes as if their lives depended
on them . . . but more importantly, they present ways to
inspire a desire to bring in the new.
I particularly liked the use of real-life examples . . . although the book was written in 1996, it is still amazingly current; i.e., most of the ideas the authors present still make sense today . . . also, they can be applied to virtually any size or type of organization.
There were many memorable passages; among them:
* But you'll actually do more and better by learning to slow down when everything around you is speeding up. John Wooden, the great UCLA basketball coach who won an unprecedented 10 national championships, offers this advice: "Be quick, but don't hurry. If you hurry you make mistakes."
* You may not be a beginner, but you can learn how to think like one. Take real estate agent Michael Young, for instance. He was his company's most successful agent in northern California but he couldn't make the leap from
selling houses in [one price range] range to those[in a higher price range]and up.
"I don't get it, " he said. "I'm using the same prospecting strategies, making calls in the evening to people at home, giving them advice and telling them about the market, and I'm in the same marketplace. But it's not working."
"Think like a beginner, forget your old strategies, start fresh," we advised him. "Look at the business like you're a novice. What can you do to break into this market?"
Instead of competing with other brokers, Young spotted an untapped opportunity in the high-end market. He discovered that many listings expire before the house is sold. So he developed a strategy for buying old listings and sharing commissions. The technique brought in so much business that he formed the Michael Young Company in San Francisco. Now brokers
call him unsolicited.

advances have only accelerated the situation.

"Plastic surgery isn't the only way to keep the aging process at bay. With the proper care you can have fabulous skin in your forties, fifties, sixties and beyond," promises author Nicholas Perricone, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine. In his opening chapters, Perricone explains why skin wrinkles and sags--a combination of factors including the passage of time, stress, poor nutrition, excess alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation, and exposure to cigarette smoke, sunlight, and pollution. Ultimately, however, it all boils down to damage caused by those renegade free radicals.

The bulk of his book is then devoted to a clearly presented skin care regimen that involves oral and topical antioxidant therapy. On the oral front, he emphasizes eating antioxidant foods, such as cantaloupe and dark green leafy vegetables, and avoiding "bad carbohydrates" (high in the glycemic index) such as pasta, sugar, and pancakes. And if you want to look good for a big event within a few days he suggests eating "fish, fish and more fish."

On the topical level, he recommends nutritional skin products such as his DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) cream ("an instant anti-aging face-lift"), a product that can only be purchased at specific places, such as selected Nordstrom stores or www.Sephora.com. "The Wrinke Cure," has what everyone wants! This book contains all the proven information for maintaining and obtaining youthful skin but the benefits do not stop there. Guidance on diet, exercise, and nutritional supplementation for feeling recharged in every way is included. Most importantly, this is an easy and enjoyable program for everyone, including a busy professional like myself, to follow. I am sold on this program and, after trying it for a short time, can honestly say that I recommend it highly to all of my friends and family. (Oh yes! I feel wonderful too!)

I picked up The Wrinkle Cure in a bookstore recently...I was just having a leisurely browse. However, I knew I had picked up something that I must read and heed. The doctor gives wonderful hope, scientific insights, and specific resources for achieving and maintaining beautiful skin for a lifetime. I read the book from cover to cover....and then I put into action his suggestions for internal and external nourishment for the skin. It has been a successful experience. Thank you Dr. Perricone!
