Fascinating research made practical

I read some of Molloy's other books in the distant past, and was impressed, so I checked this out. If the topic of how men proceed or don't proceed toward the altar interests you, this book will open your eyes up. A lot of research went into the book, and it was guided a lot by women who were among Molloy's researchers who themselves wanted to get married.
Some guys, according to Molloy, become interested in marriage when they no longer fit comfortably into the singles scene. Because they have matured beyond the girls who are still in the singles scene, or the girls in the singles scene start to look at those guys as outsiders who no longer belong in the singles scene.
In this book he destroys the notion that women over 40 have a better chance of being killed by a terrorist than married, when he relates that he thought the statement was absurd, and looked at the statistics, and saw that nine percent of women who got married in 1980 were forty or older.
Molloy sees men being ready for marriage or not being ready for marriage. When a guy is fresh out of college, he may well want to enjoy his freedom for a couple of years. So he will not be ready to settle down for a while. A woman who wants to get married will concentrate on guys who are ready to get married.
Most men proposed only after pressure was applied by the prospective bride, and Molloy argues that if that pressure is not applied that many of the women would not have gotten married. It seems that there is a natural readiness period, and if the proposal doesn't take place in that period, then it won't happen. And it is up to the woman to push it along in many cases, if it is to happen. Molloy suggests that some pressuring is good, and other pressuring is bad. E.g., "I will find someone else if you don't marry me," seems to make the man defensive and uncooperative.
I am a straight unmarried guy, and read this because I find the topic interesting. But there is a lot of material that would be useful for women who want to land a husband. There is nothing that focuses specifically on getting a husband of your dreams, per se, but there is material to help you assess whether a current "Mr. Right" is a waste of time (and time destroys mate-finding opportunities!). Or how to proceed with a Mr. Right to optimize your chances of a marriage him.

Age 45 and just engaged

I am one who found this book extremely powerful and down to earth, especially the section about marrying over the age of 40 and how men look at relationships differently as they get older. Unlike some of the reviewers here, I thought the book's information was empowering, gave me encouragement that I really had a lot of influence in finding and building a relationship.

My fiance and I are in our mid- late-40s, never been married but not because we had never had any other opportunity. We're both well-educated, and in decent shape physically and have good careers. I have been focused on my education and my career and extracurricular interests and other relationships just didn't seem to work or it was just bad timing, etc. I've seen many of my past mistakes in Molloy's book.

One way Molloy was helpful was in outlining who the eligible men truly are. This was a great help in focusing when I went online to find someone. I wanted someone who was interested in history and the outdoors found one. It's been a strong tie that has bound us together.

Another way the book was invaluable was in delineating when a relationship has long-term promise or is bound for a dead end. Watching out for these sometimes subtle signs has actually allowed me to relax in this relationship, which probably worked in my favor. Women often try too hard in relationships, anyway, but with the right guy you actually don't have to try too much. You can be in the relationship with confidence, which prevents a good man from feeling too pressured and bailing out and, in makes him in my case, more likely to propose. And relaxing allows you to check and see if your values and lifestyles are truly compatible. But, again, though, the point is that women have to keep their eyes open and bail if they have to.

I did go against Molloy, however, in that we moved in together over a year after we had met. I agree that in some instances, that probably isn't a good idea, but for us it worked. For women, it is important to be upfront about what their expectations are, as Molloy emphasizes. I bluntly told my then-boyfriend that I expected to get a proposal within a reasonable amount of time and wasn't going to settle for being one of those couples who just lived together for years on end. He was startled at my bluntness but agreed and here I am: engaged, about a year or so after he moved in. And I didn't have to beg him to do it, which is extremely gratifying.

So, ladies, don't feel discouraged! I wish you all the best in your future search for a special one.

Many Americans know "mojo" is Southern slang for powerful magic. But few Americans know the word originated in West Africa and referred to a small cloth bag containing protective magicks. The origin of mojo is as obscure to Americans as the religious, spiritual, and magical beliefs of Africa, which are far less familiar than the religions and myths of Europe and Asia. Acclaimed author/editor Nalo Hopkinson addresses this imbalance with her anthology Mojo: Conjure Stories, which collects 19 original stories of magic and gods and mortals, set in locales that range from a pre-Civil War plantation to modern Oakland, from Nineteenth-Century England to underground New York City.

Contributors range from big names like Steven Barnes, Neil Gaiman, and Barbara Hambly to exciting new authors (however, editor Hopkinson unfortunately does not contribute a story). The anthology avoids such inaccurate, offensive Hollywood stereotypes as the pin-stuck "voodoo doll," and the overall quality is very high, with a few weak tales offset by the far more numerous excellent stories. Among the best works are Sheree Renee Thomas's poetic myth "How Sukie Cross De Big Wata"; Marcia Douglas's lyrical "Notes from a Writer's Book of Cures and Spells," the best story about the writing process since Jaime Hernandez's "How to Kill A" (Love & Rockets); and "The Tawny Bitch," Nisi Shawl's classically gothic tale of a wealthy, quadroon British heiress held captive by a greedy, lustful relative.

The 19 stories in this all-original anthology, edited by the author of Skin Folk, skillfully blend West African magic, fantasy and horror, along with plain old-fashioned readability. Some deal with familiar aspects of that magic in unfamiliar ways, such as the zombies of Steven Barnes's "Heartspace" and Neil Gaiman's "Bitter Grounds." Others explore social issues, like Tananarive Due's disturbing "Trial Day," which highlights injustice against African-Americans during the 1920s. "The Prowl" (Gregory Frost), "The Horsemen and the Morning Star" (Barbara Hambly) and "How Sukie Cross de Big Wata" (Sheree Renée Thomas) offer grim views of slavery days. Marcia Douglas's somewhat tongue-in-cheek "Notes from a Writer's Book of Cures and Spells" amuses more than it unsettles. A.M. Dellamonica applies magic to food in "Cooking Creole," while Barth Anderson's "Lark till Dawn, Princess" takes place on the drag queen circuit with an assist from a magical Elvis impersonator. Since some authors develop their themes or handle dialect better than others, the mojo level varies from story to story. The contributors include Tananarive Due, Neil Gaiman, Barbara Hambly, and Steven Barnes, with tales from Africa and the American South. A shape changer onboard a slave ship wreaks havoc with the ship's crew and later the slave masters. A mother who knows her child isn't destined to stay with her long evokes a trickster to try to save his life. A young girl with special powers searches to release her father from her stepmother's spell, freeing him to help her beloved brother, who is headed for a courtroom lynching in a Klan-dominated town. VERY ENJOYABLE

This book is really cool! I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaimen, so I'll buy anything with him in it. Tananarive Due's story rocked! And so did Barbara Hambly's! Asuquo, the story by a lesser known author named Nnedima Okorafor was very strange, but in a really good way. A very odd story. I'm glad to see that there are African writers writing about this sort of thing, too.

Reader, Be Aware!

The introduction of Mojo: Conjure Stories warns the reader to beware, to adorn their protective beads, to pocket their jujubags and sets the stage for the mystical anthology contained therein. The novel, edited by Nalo Hopkinson, is comprised of nineteen short stories from noteworthy authors such as Steven Barnes, Tananarive Due, and Barbara Hambly. All tales are colorful, creative, and rooted in "mojo" - a tricky, powerful, and dangerous magic with a West African flavor.
This is a diverse collection in that it traverses time to provide stories from the slave ships, the antebellum South, the Jim Crow era, the 1960's and even present day. Some stories are rooted in folklore, e.g. Andy Duncan's "Daddy Mention and the Monday Skull", while others address moral and societal issues such as incest, revenge, love, lust, and greed. One of my favorites is Barbara Hambly's "The Horsemen and The Morning Star" in which plantation slaves garner strength and call upon their ancestor's gods to ride their weary backs to fight the master's resurrection of the devil to save one of their own. Jarla Tangh's "The Skinned" references the recent Rowandan tragedy and delivers a powerful message against the backdrop of the modern American inner city. Another noteworthy mention is Jenise Aminoff's "Fate" in which a mother with the gift of sight tries desperately to alter her son's destiny and pays a high price in the end.
This reviewer found some stories a bit more challenging to follow than others, but believes there is enough variety in subject matter and writing style to satisfy even the most critical reader. This book covered multiple dimensions of conjuring: from using black magic to control spirits, outwitting the tricksters, initiating curses, belief in shape-shifting to the making and manipulation of zombies. It was an engaging and interesting read about a mystical and magical heritage. One can surely gain hours of reading pleasure with this book.

Tasteful Tales of Terror

Hopkins tastefully begins this consortium of tales by defining and distinguishing between religion and magic. She explains that "religion is an institutionalized system of spiritual beliefs...magic is the practice of altering the fated progression of events to suit one's desires." She then reminds us that magic is dangerous, and the ensuing stories support her statement.
From the Plateye, mischievous ghost who roam the earth changing shape and identity for deadly self-serving purposes, to the mysterious Udu pots that preserve, and don't forget Uncle Monday who steals souls...or Anansi, a trickster god disguised as an eight legged, wrinkled face spider, these conjured anomalies float through the pages of Mojo to form exquisite stories of characters performing self-serving magic. This anthology mixes modern fantasy with magic folklore and voodoo curses, the result being eerie and mysterious tales that spread your imagination and prickle the back of your neck.
Hopkins assembled an impressive reticulation of great writers. Steven Barnes, Tananarive Due, Barbara Hambly, and Marcia Douglas are just a few of the talented contributors. Barth Anderson's "Lark Till Dawn Princess" was the most intriguing to me. It was more mystery than mojo, and told of singing & performances in the alternative drag queen world. You'll love the point of view. Gregory Frost's "The Prowl" was among the cleverest because it is an explosive snatch of black history spun on vengeance. Denise Aminoff had the most daring and disturbing story. It reminded me of an early episode of the X-files.
If you enjoy the unknown, the far-reaching, and don't mind stretching beyond the familiar parameters of belief, you'll enjoy these conjure stories.

About the Author

Gregory Benford is a professor of physics at the University of California, Irvine. He is a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and was Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University. and in 1995 received the Lord Prize for contributions to sciences. His research encompasses both theory and experiments in the fields of astrophysics and plasma physics. His fiction has won many awards, including the Nebula Award for his novel Timescape. Dr. Benford makes his home in Laguna Beach, California.

Benford has explores the theme of the dip relations between our ancient past and the extragalactic aliens that visited our planet and the solar sistem eons away , in a very original narrative which captures the interest of the reader.The creation of some simpatic and nice caracters like the Snark lives a sense of melancholic sadness at his departure towards the vast "ocean of the night". I enjoy it very much,it deserves the stars.

this was a good book, though it got slow in sections. some of the terms used seemed archaic, or fabricated, which is cool, as i just take it as a divergent universe, not our own.

Galactic Center Kindof Starts Here

In the Ocean of night is the first book in a six book series called the Galactic Center Saga - one of the best known and beloved epic hard science fiction stories out there.

I'm only reviewing two books in the series: In the Ocean of Night and Great Sky River and I've attached a broader review of the series to these two reviews that I hope might be useful to the reader.

In the Ocean of Night presents us a world that is out of balance with humanity crowding earth and having too much of an impact on the world from an ecological standpoint. The book focuses quite a bit on the personal lives of the people in the story and in their development so this book is an unlikely starter for such a fantastic story that is told in the last 4 books of the series but in an interesting way many of the same themes are here. The book In the Ocean of Night was first a novellette published on IF magazine back in 1972 and then it was expanded into a full length book. So interwoven into this whole story of human overpopulation and 1960s style alternative lifestyle parameters (or natural lifestyle parameters depending on your inclination), the author weaves the beginnings of what will be a fantastic story set against the center of the galaxy. In the Ocean of Night though takes place on Earth mostly and you have to plow through the people and ecology and personal life stuff to get to the about 20 or so pages of interesting hard sci fi (for me).

The second book Across the Sea of Suns is truly a fantastic work of science fiction though and a true mystery tale and then there is a hiatus and flashforward 30,000 years to the events of Great Sky River (the first book I read of the series). So to me the first two books were almost prologue material albeit very interesting prologue.

My advice is pick up this book and try to read them in order but if you find yourself bogged down with the personal lives of the scientists, set it aside and pick up Across the Sea of Suns or even better Great Sky River and then come back to In the Ocean of Night after you're hooked and want some precursor material. I ate up In the Ocean of Night back when I first read it but Benford had me nicely hooked (hook like and sinker) with the last 4 books and with Across the Sea of Suns....in the end the series is nicely balanced with the 6 books in terms of theme. I don't know if I'd end the series the way Benford did (I think I had a better ending envisioned) which Dr. Benford did not align with me on. Benford is a great writer that gets you thinking along certain lines and as the books went along from Great Sky River to Tides of Light to Furious Gulf and Sailing Bright Eternity, I kept saying, "I get it! I know where you're going with this! And, wow that's interesting." So he gets you in sync nicely but towards the very end it wasn't that Benford threw a terrible curve ball or anything that yanked the story in another direction, it was more like we fell slightly out of sync (don't get me wrong, his ending is just fine, but it wasn't quite the way I would've put it) -- but hey, I'm just the reader who read this first when he was a kid and he's the author and its a great story.

Collectively, this series of books written by Gregory Benford are known as the Galactic Center Saga. In order the books are:

1) In the Ocean of Night - Near Future
2) Across the Sea of Suns - Few hundred years from Now Future

--- Big Break in Time

3) Great Sky River - Distant Future
4) Tides of Light - Distant Future
5) Furious Gulf - Distant Future
6) Sailing Bright Eternity - Distant Future

The series is an early monument to epic science fiction on a grand scale across space and time. The prevailing concept of the books is that of how life in all its forms is resilient and how life adapts and evolves in response to different circumstances. The series also tells the story of how sometimes there is intense competition for resources and how sometimes groups seek to protect their resources. And finally, the series talks about how when things go out of balance - like human overexpansion - something happens in nature that brings back balance --- so in a large sense, the series is a cautionary tale although Benford skillfully makes out the Machine empire as the out of balance force that has to be brought back into normality but if you go back to the original book, it is humanity that is out of balance with earth.

Reading the entire series was a voyage of discovery for me. So, I first started reading the series with the third book titled, Great Sky River. The title, as best as I can remember, is a metaphorical label for the arms of the Milky Way galaxy which "flow" to the center of the galaxy. I found Great Sky River to be very entertaining fast paced, hard science fiction telling the story of survival by a few humans set against the backdrop of the wonders of the center of the galaxy in some far distant future. In this far future age, humanity civilization has already peaked and has begun a long decline and the heros struggle to survive in this far future world dominated by a vast machine civilization that dominates the central portion of the galaxy - a machine civilization that considers humans little more than a pest infestation (humans are cockroaches or rats, in this future world)....albeit the machines do consider humans interesting in some respects. So overall, a bit of a bleak world. Mind you, the machines consider interesting for a particular reason that I won't divulge for fear of being a spoiler but overall, the author plays with a whole plethora of concepts in a very intertaining fashion.

The last 3 books continue with the setting of Great Sky River (the center of the galaxy) and characters from Great Sky River. The books explore the human condition, the grandness of our universe, life, and a whole slew of other things. The last three books, particularly the last two, begin to tie in the first two books from the series and gives you the sense of the vastness of the galactic saga with the final book buttoning up everything in a rather interesting fashion.

After reading the last four series of the books and wanting more, I read that there were two precursor books. I read Across the Sea of Suns next which I found tremendously enjoyable. Across the Sea of Suns is the book which starts to set things in motion from a galactic center saga standpoint with an explanation of some core tenets for the following final four books in the series. Across the Sea of Suns is a mystery story first and foremost - which is kindof fun to read although a bit depressing because it is here that you first come to see the invisible machine empire and how powerless humanity is to do anything against them. Imagine, if some unseen alien force started sending meteors to pommel earth or send diseases our way etc - what could we do? Think of the movie Cloverfield, we would be virtually defenseless as a race against an attack like that.

Back to the first two books. In my mind, In the Ocean of Night, has a near future setting and gives me the impression of humanity being all alone in the Universe and entirely engrossed in our own petty little lives and there is talk of how we are ravaging our environment and how we are out of balance. The book plays out against the backdrop of the 1960s alternative lifestyles all embued with some of the behavior that has helped us survive as a species. I don't want to give away the story in the review so just bear in mind that this first installment of the series is very focused on the peoples, the cultures, and the society of the planet, including the interpersonal relationships of many characters. Intertwined into the book, you get the science fiction backdrop that we are not alone and you get some glimpses of a broader world.

So the prevaling theme is that of balance, the persistence of life, competition - all set against the backdrop of hard science fiction that becomes harder as you delve deeper into the series. Never as hard as Stephen Baxter who I think is phenomenal but hard science fiction nontheless.

If you don't like slow social science fiction, you might want to skip In the Ocean of Night and go straight to Across the Sea of Suns. If you want the precursor material to Great Sky River without the interhuman drama, you can read the short story on the 1972 issue of "IF" magazine - if you can find it. If you just want the fun and excitement of a fast paced hard sci fi series, start with Great Sky River and take it from there.

Overall, In the Ocean of Night is required reading but just bear in mind that its richer from a character development standpoint and not true hard sci fi like most of the rest of the series.

The best motivational walking book yet!

I've taken out several books from our local library over the years about walking. Actually, that's the only type of exercise I can stick to. Doesn't cost a thing, no getting in the car; just walk out your front door. You may think Kathy Smith is just another pretty female fitness guru trying to sell a new angle. But her book has facts and not alot of chat that really make things clear. She did a nice job with this book. You will lose weight if you cut some calories and walk 30-40 minutes about 5 times a week. Casey Meyer's walking book is the only other one I've come across that's good. It's longer, but motivational also. You need to get moving and lock that refrigerator!

I was too overweight that I had to see a podiatrist to treat my heel pain. I had other multiple health problems due to being overweight until I started Kathy Smith's walkfit programs. she's very practical, straigthforward and highly informative in her approach to fitness. I started the program just 4 months ago, and I can no longer go for a day w/o walking! I've lost 20 pds. and feel much healthier and happier! I live in Asia and ordered her tapes when I was in America. I absolutlely recommend her books. It has changed my way of life, and I will never regret this choice I made!

Solid Suggestions

According to D.A. Benton, there are 22 "vital traits" which one needs to develop fully. In How to Think Like A CEO, she examines each of them in detail while providing numerous examples of the success they have helped others to achieve.
The mountain-climbing metaphor she invokes is especially apt. In a Darwinian sense, the "fittest" climbers are those who have the necessary training and equipment, of course, but also certain personal qualities (especially tenacity, composure, self-discipline, and endurance) which enable them to reach the desired "summit", whatever and wherever it may be. Most limits in life are self-imposed. Stated another way, many people under-estimate what they can accomplish while exaggerating the difficulty of achieving whatever they may desire.
In How to Think Like A CEO, Benton observes that in all her years of mountain climbing, "more critical than the summit is the internal knowledge you gain; how to deal with your own internal fears; how to be intuitive and humble and aware of every detail; and how to live fully. And most important, I've learned my goal is not just to climb up the mountains, but to give back to them." This she does by sharing so much of what she has learned.
Few who read this book will become a CEO. I suspect that few CEOs will read it. (I may be wrong about that.) Other books on the subject of leadership are far more profound. (Warren Bennis wrote many of them.) In my opinion, How to Think Like a CEO has substantial value because it enables its readers to take stock of their personal as well as professional strengths and weaknesses in correlation with the strengths of some of the world's most successful CEOs. You will will still have to think for yourself

Ms. Benton is a top-tier image consultant, and the first book of hers I read was Lion's Don't Need to Roar. That was a great book about projecting the "right" image. I decided to read this book because I wanted to hear her insights about the successful CEOs she has worked with.

The book presents a lot of interesting information. Twenty-two vital traits are enough to cover just about every trait, but some might be more vital than others. Obviously, any book written by a consultant to the rich and powerful has to be weighed by the need not to bite the hand that feeds you. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading the anecdotes, and I always like to hear positive things about those who occupy the seats of power (mainly because I hope that good people do get ahead).

But as far as climbing the mountain of successs by learning to think like a CEO, the caption for chapter six probably sums it up nicely: "every climber is different, and it's important for you to understand those differences." Reading history is not the same as making history. Hey, and writing book reviews isn't the same as writing books, either!

This is a good book to read on airplane trips, but don't expect it to be your master plan for taking over the world. You will still have to think for yourself and do your own heavy lifting.

Solid perspective.

Forget the people who claim that this book is a rehash. They need to read it again and stop skimming chapter titles and skipping pages. Yes, a lot of this material is covered in other leadership books. There are basics that every reader of this type of book simply has to know. The author can't assume that they know, so she presents the basics.
Buy this book for the unique content: The quotes. Real quotes from real CEO's. Dozens of real life examples of what goes on in the life and in the mind of the man (or woman) at the top.
If you want to see what motivates a CEO, it's in this book. If you want to see what a day in the life of a CEO is like, it's in this book. If you want to see how a CEO handles pressure situations, it's in this book.
The quotes alone are worth the 10 to 15 bucks. The easy, specific examples of things that you can say and do to improve your situation at work are just a bonus.
As a small business owner, I would like to thank Debra for helping me to bridge the gap between my home business and my career. This book showed me how the skills that I developed as an entrepreneur could be applied to my consulting job.
What prevented the book from being 5 stars? Author self reference. I realize that 'Lions Don't Need To Roar' is a great book, and cross promotion is all the rage, but borrowing the bulk of entire chapters from 'Lions' is a bit much.
Still, a great read.

Prowling the modish clubs, party circuit and weekend getaways of rich and trendy New York society (most of whose denizens are identified by pseudonyms), Bushnell offers a brash, radically unromantic perspective. She visits a sex club and dates a Bicycle Boy ("the literary romantic subspecies" whose patron saints are George Plimpton and Murray Kempton). But in most chapters she keeps to the sidelines, deploying instead her alter-ego Carrie (like the author, a blonde writer from Connecticut in her mid-30s), whose sweet if feckless romance with Mr. Big?a nondescript power player?serves as a foil for the hilarious, unsentimentalized misadventures of her peers. These include model-chasers like Barkley, 25, a painter with the face of a Botticelli angel whose parents pay for his SoHo junior loft, and Tom Peri, the "emotional Mayflower," who ferries newly dumped women to higher emotional ground and is then invariably dumped. A disarmingly candid, greatly superificial, and charmingly quirky book

As someone who recently discovered (and became addicted to) HBO's delightful series "Sex and the City," it was inevitable that I'd wind up investigating Candace Bushnell's book. Bushnell's book is the collected form of the column she wrote for years before TV writer Darren Star turned it into a hit television series. Ironically, though Bushnell's book probably wouldn't get anywhere near as much attention if it weren't for the TV series, it's because of the TV series that it appears so many readers have had a foul reaction to the book. It's true that those expecting the TV show on paper are bound to be disappointed, probably in a big way, because Bushnell's "Sex and the City" doesn't have a lot in common with the show.

For the most part, the book does revolve around Carrie Bradshaw (a thinly-disguised alter-ego for Bushnell, with even the same initials), a thirty-something columnist in New York. Miranda Hobbes does show up a few times during the first half of the book, though she's not a lawyer. Samantha Jones is not a PR agent nor such a nymphomaniac as she was in the show. And Charlotte is a British woman, whose TV counterpart appeared at the beginning of the series' pilot episode. Stanford Blatch, Carrie's successful homosexual friend, is the only character who remains virtually the same, though here he's a screenwriter. Many of the same situations presented throughout the show pop up in the book, such as Stanford's obsession with his model "protege," the torment of the baby shower, and "modelizers." And those who loved Chris Noth's Mr. Big needn't worry. Big is a major character in the book and is just as adorable (and even less rambunctious) as he was in the show, though the outcome of he and Carrie's relationship is different in the book than in the show.

Bushnell's columns were meant more as musings on the life of single women in New York, and often single men as well, than as a linear narrative. Thus it's surprising that her writings work so well as a book. She has a very cute, quirky, innocent style of writing, and that's a big part of what makes her book such a blast. However Bushnell offers little insight into what any of the characters are actually feeling, and rightly so: it just accents their appalling and, frankly, upsetting superficiality. The dating scene in Manhattan is a hellish world where all that matters is sex, money, fashion, and drugs. Bushnell is obviously deeply involved in this world, and it's her knowledge of it, along with her characters' candid musings, that kept me reading.

In the end, those expecting the HBO series in a book are going to be very disappointed. Those expecting something resembling the HBO series will probably be let down as well. The book and the series are designed for two different worlds - while the show tended to have a sweet optimism to it, Bushnell writes with the same sort of dreamy, hopeful cynicism that one would find in a Bret Easton Ellis book. However, those who would rather read the book than incessently compare it with the show may enjoy it. I recommend Candace Bushnell's "Sex and the City" to those who are younger and looking for a fun, unusual, honest read.

Even if you've seen the show...read the book!

Have you ever sat in a coffee shop or your hometown's shopping mall, catching snippets of juicy conversations as they pass by you? $eXz In The City, the book, is just like that only better.

In SITC, you get to listen to the snippets of the rich and famous, the ultimately wealthy, and the downright notorious; something you don't get at home.

Though built upon shallow ideals, the characters are anything but shallow; they are witty, charming, self-centered, goal-orientated, and real. The storyline, though it is told in fragments not unlike a diary that many people have written in, manages to stay smooth and yet spontaneous in its wandering courses.

Both the Cable Show and the book stem from a column Candace Bushnell started writing for The New York Observer back in 1994, where she decided to remove the sentimental value from relationships and mating rituals and replace it with a healthy, well needed injection of sardonic humor. Thanks to Ms. Bushnell, we have such wonderful glimpses into this taboo subject like "The M&M's", "The Modelizers", "Psycho Moms", "Bicycle Boys", "Dweebs, Nerds, and Losers", "Comparison Shopping", "The Nanny Camera", and many more.

SITC is a wonderfully fun, kick-back-and-relax kind of book; a lively and fun story that reminds you not to take yourself so seriously all the time. I highly recommend it for a lazy afternoon or a sunny day at the beach. Enjoy!

The age of Un-innocence indeed!

'Sex and the City' is fun to read and entertaining. The characters' lives are so outrageous that your life seems dull and predictable in comparison. I love the topics: the toxic bachelors; the guys who date models; threesomes; and the four city girls, including "Carrie", visiting married women in Conneticut and enjoying themselves, to their surprise.
The book is mainly focused on Carrie and her boyfriend, "Mr. Big." I love the HBO series based on this book, but the book tells us a different story of love and dating in New York. The book is as fun and as outrageous as the HBO series. A fun read!
